The Asian Drama Generational Trauma Challenge List

As @waitmyturtles has been making her way through her OGMMTVC I have been continuing to watch way too many dramas and thinking about the ones I want her to watch when she’s done with that project. And because I know Turtles, it’s always the dramas that feature themes around intergenerational trauma, filial piety, and lots of emotionally fraught interactions between parents and children that ping my “Turtles needs to watch this” radar. As I was mentioning the shows I wanted her to watch, Turtles joked that maybe I should make her a new challenge list that is focused on intergenerational trauma.

And if y’all haven’t learned this about me yet, you should know that I have no chill and absolutely will embark on a whole project because you make a stray comment in my direction. So here we are!

I wanted this list to be inclusive of a broad range of Asian dramas, exploring how it shows up in different Asian countries and through both het and queer lenses, so I consulted quite a few friends. Shoutout to @wen-kexing-apologist, @so-much-yet-to-learn, @bengiyo, @shortpplfedup, @ginnymoonbeam, and @emotionallychargedtowel for helping me refine this list. We landed on the following criteria:

Modern dramas only—not necessarily current but set in a time period recent enough that we don’t have a whole additional set of social mores to layer on top

The drama explores intergenerational trauma, not just intergenerational dynamics (so shows like Reply 1988 that are very much about family but not necessarily trauma are not on the list)

Intergenerational trauma is a primary focus and a major theme of the drama, not a background theme, a surprise reveal, or just part of a character’s backstory to engender sympathy (waves goodbye to most chaebol romcoms)

We are using the word trauma in a broad sense here–a lot of the complex trauma featured in these shows would not meet the formal DSM diagnostic criteria as a Traumatic Event

We did apply a quality filter–the execution of the story needs to be good enough that the intergenerational trauma themes stay intact, even if the drama overall is not a total slam dunk

Note also that this list is not chronological and there is no suggested watch order. I also do not recommend binging all of these dramas one after the other. Some of these shows are heavy and you’ll want to space them out. This is a challenge to complete over time!

I decided to share this on tumblr in case others are similarly weird and wanted to undertake this challenge with us. kinnporsche wasnt just a show for me, it was an experience. it gave me one of my most favourite characters (kinn, if anyone is curious) and helped me make more friends and meet more creators and see their amazing work.

What I loved about the show was how character driven the plot was, even if we all could predict what was gonna happen next. and of course, the actors acted their ass off making this show legit a standard in its genre.

To appreciate these characters and actors who did justice to them, i have made like 22 ( math and I arent on good terms, I made a webweave for everyone leaving jom and tem because i didnt have enough information on them as individuals)

Its my first attempt at webweaves and tbh quite proud of it and hence want to share it with you guys who made KP fandom what it it is for- a joyful, hilarious and creative space - thank you you all

Currently watching

A Boss and a Babe - cute, easy to watch

Bed Friend - cute, easy to watch HA! who am I kidding. Despite the icky trauma I love this one. Let's hope it sticks the landing.

Chains of Heart - I was going to wait to watch this one (like Big Dragon) but I got SO DRAWN IN and now I'm obsessed.

The Eighth Sense - I knew a kbl would be gorgeously made but this one is knocking all other kbls out of the park. It's also stabbing me in the heart. But I love it.

Future - a little cringeworthy, a little slow, but it's light and easy.

The Promise - I have to watch this a week behind since I don't have a subscription hence I miss the analysis and discourse, which is needed because the characters' motivations can be frustrating. Plus colours!

UMG - I wish this could have had a midnight museum level of depth, even a 10 years ticket, but it's slapstick crack. Which doesn't make it bad per se but it's a little too light and throwaway whilst also trying to be sort of a character study. I also wish they had given the aliens a blurred focus because they're much less menacing when you can see it's just prosthetics and make-up.

3 Will Be Free - I started this a while ago but stalled mid-way through ep 3. I'll get back to it soon but I find Joss a bit wooden.

Our Skyy 2 - I might end up having to watch each ep later than everyone else (and thus hiding the tag for the whole series sadly) because Wed and Thurs evenings are the WORST time for me. But SO EXCITED!

Double Savage - I might also have to wait and binge this one later because it might be difficult to squeeze this in with all the above.

Older shows:

The Director who buys me Dinner - the eps are only short, so I could binge it at some point.

HIStory 5: Love in the Future - the ep lengths daunt me, so maybe I'll binge it during my next long break from work?

Big Dragon - not sure when I'll get round to this but it's been on my list since before Christmas.

DAY 15: follow forever + my thanks

So those who have been around for the last few years know I usually post this on the last day of cheercember as a thanks for those who participated and sent in requests as well as just to thank all the lovely mutuals for hanging around and for giving to the fandoms in the way that they do. As you can see it's only Day 15 and that just kind of explains my year skjfslkjf. For those who don't know I was promoted earlier this year and I now have a dual role at my job and slowly as the year went by in order to keep up with things as well as for other reasons that happen within my career I started working 85-90 hours every two weeks. December was no different and by the time I got home I had little energy left to be creative or to sit in front of my laptop. However, that being said I do still plan to finish the requests and even my list (yes I had a list). I will slowly push them out through Janurary.

Now that that's all out of the way, I do really want to thank everyone (followers included) for making this such a fun space as we all need a little escapism in our life. And I also always appreciate your support! I hope you all have a happy new year and that good things find you throughout the year. get up by newjeans should've been a full song. it's a crime that the song is only 36 seconds. the beat is so calming and mesmerising. i feel levitated whenever i listen to it.

dec 11th by giveon is my current on-repeat song. that song helped me to write the latest chapter of somewhere else. i'm really thankful. it's just the perfect song i needed for that chapter.

(i would have followed you) by delaney bailey was initially an inspiration for a different topmew au i had in mind. i don't know if the story will ever be written, but this song was what i had in mind when i thought about that idea.

older by searows is another gem i discovered from one of my all-time favourite artists. he's just amazing. i love his music so much. some honourable mentions include used to be friends, keep the rain, house song and coming clean. searows and novo amor represent everything that i wish to incorporate in my writing; warmth, peacefulness and security.

leave before you love me by marshmellow x jonas brothers is another song in my topmew playlist. the lyrics remind me so much of top. it's messing with my head, how i mess with your heart; i can picture top saying this to mew right after he knows he likes mew, but he can't promise a happy ending for their relationship.
