100% true, definitely needs to be said.
A lot of people in fandom spaces HATE when characters grow and change. They get attached to a certain version of a character that appeals to them the most, and if the character grows or changes in anyway, these people will become upset and go as far as to claim things are being retconned or whatever (especially if they change against their headcanons and like I'm sorry but sometimes your headcanons are wrong).
Drifter literally just had a character arc, and an excellent one at that. We know so much about his life. We know where he came from, how he lived at the start of being a Lightbearer, we know what he went through. We know what he lost and how, we know how much it traumatised him. His trauma caused him to close off and isolate, to keep people at bay because if he gets close to them, he will lose them again. He resented the Light and searched for other ways, leading him into schemes and unsavoury company and experimenting with the Darkness back when that was much more frowned upon and more dangerous.
He didn't want connections because he didn't trust them. He didn't trust that they would last and that he wouldn't be hurt again. Everyone who dismisses Drifter's trauma or treats it as just some cool aspect of his character is immediately suspect to me, not gonna lie. Like, yes, unhinged Drifter is interesting as a character and I enjoy that part of his life as well, but I ultimately want him to heal and get better.
It's always been presented that he wanted to do good and to help people and save them, but given his circumstances, he either couldn't or, later, he started distancing from them because he believed that his presence would make it worse. Drifter always cared, deeply. The name chosen for him even as a Dredgen was "Hope." His arc was always moving in the direction of him accepting his helpful nature and coming to terms of working with other people, having a community, and having trusted friends. That's the natural conclusion of his story. He overcomes his trauma.
Which he did! And it took years. And it started with us. Arguably, you can say it also started with Shin and the Gambit setup with the Vanguard, but we, the YW, were the true first catalyst. We didn't have any baggage around him, so we accepted who he was and we trusted him. And we were one of the people who he wouldn't lose. We stayed with him through everything so far. Through us, he realised that there's more to connection with other people than simply losing them.
Drifter's arc from someone who saw no hope for survival and was ready to leave it all behind and try his luck out there all alone to someone who gradually realised that there's strength in the pack and that there are people who care and who will help him and protect him has genuinely been one of the best parts of the Destiny story. Way too many people view Drifter superficially and have never engaged with any of his story.
This is particularly baffling when it comes from people who are allegedly fans of him. Why do you want him to suffer forever? Because, as a fan of the Drifter, I want him to have a character arc and to heal from trauma. I want him to feel safe. I want him to never be hungry again. I want him not to worry about people he cares about dying in his arms.
I feel like a lot of people just want to be able to write edgy angst fanfics. And I want a narrative: I want characters to evolve over time and respond to the changes in their circumstances.
Sorry for going off on your post, you're completely correct and this is one of those pet peeves that I have, specifically about the Drifter and how the fandom treats him and how many times I've seen the fandom rejecting his arc and his healing from trauma. Anti-recovery website, I guess. Idk, the borderline obsession with the Drifter from 5 years ago who was going through immense suffering and isolation out of fear and paranoia is kinda uncomfortable to me in the context of people saying that this Drifter was better.
It was a great start to his character! It made him really interesting and compelling! Knowing where he came from and how he started is what makes the rest of his story stand out and encapsulate the core of the Destiny's theme. He chose to change. He chose to overcome his fears and anxiety and to try. And there's plenty of characters who refused to do this; those stories are also compelling. But the Drifter was never pointed in that direction. From the very start, he was shown to be a man of hope, and care, and need to protect. He just didn't get a chance to fulfil his purpose until much later. And I'm glad he got that chance. I love seeing him enjoying his time with people and helping everyone out. It's what he always wanted.
mildly unpopular drifter opinion that nobody asked for: he hasn't been "defanged" he's grown closer to the guardian + most of the characters we see him interact with in lore, and dropped enough of his act to resign to his usual bullshit without the exaggeration he's shown to use to keep people at bay. I definitely enjoy unhinged drifter but I enjoy character development more. send post

Genuinely sick of furry hate even if it’s a joke. Like ohhh haha furries are so weird and creepy! They all fuck animals! It’s exhausting at this point. No new material and it’s just dumb hateful shit. Why can’t people just leave furries alone like for real who cares

I still consider it a crime that the Gerudo sage of the past had NOTHING to say about Ganondorf in TotK. They could have grown up together. They could have trained against each other. They could have been siblings, friends, lovers, or just classmates. Is she sad or angry at him for attacking Rauru? Did she like him as king before he attacked Rauru? Is she jealous that he gets to rule the Gerudo and not her? How does she feel about the other Gerudo joining him over her? So much missed potential.
This is all true. So much missed potential. The same goes for Riju.
The same goes for all of the Gerudo, especially given that anyone can see the giant geoglyph of Ganondorf in the Gerudo Highlands from the walls of the city. A main theme of the development of the Gerudo in Tears of the Kingdom seems to be the reconsideration of their rule not to allow men into Gerudo Town, which stems from "a long-held belief that men only bring disaster." The revelation that the Eighth Heroine was a man in Rotana's "Heroines' Secret" quest could have been used to make a strong thematic statement in this regard, as could the stories of several other NPCs in and around Gerudo Town. Unfortunately, since no one is allowed to acknowledge or discuss the existence of Ganondorf or the origin of the prohibition against men, all of these narrative threads are left hanging.
I understand that a lot of the writing in Tears of the Kingdom was outsourced, and the contracted writers were almost certainly given the directive not to include anything that might inform or contradict series lore. For most of the NPCs in Hyrule, this is fine. In fact, I'd say it's actually quite lovely to be able to see all sorts of small stories that have nothing to do with magical princesses or ancient kings. For the Gerudo in particular, though, the inability of characters to talk about a major element of their history and culture is extremely awkward and frustrating.

the concept of the slur replacement project feels a bit like historical revisionism? especially considering how much i see people recommend it as the recommended way of reading homestuck. it's sanitizing down the more unpalatable bits of homestuck to make it seem more friendly and wholesome (which seems incredibly common among homestuck fans in general, especially among those who like to pretend the epilogues never happened, which is a whole other discussion i won't get into rn), and that just feels weird. not to mention the execution of it is very poor in general. the "future arachnids grip" joke is funny actually, and the change they made to make it "later arachnids grip" not only makes it a weaker joke (as it was initially a play on how the concept of gayness isn't really a thing to trolls), but also introduces an inconsistency in the writing, as it only does this change for vriska, drawing more attention to it. there's also a fucking... random bit where iirc for one line they replace a mention of bill cosby with... gnomeo and juliet? i think? which is not only a baffling decision that they don't, but is technically introducing an anachronism because that movie didn't come out until 2011. the writing they used to replace things in general just doesn't feel very homestuck-y, and it always feels clunky and awkward.

My favorite thing in the world is where Wilyss romance fics always end in a pregnancy announcement. And you can tell it's written by someone who has neither experienced romance nor sex nor anything of the sort, because they think the end goal of all those things is a child. It's like a jumpscare every single time like wdym Alyss is pregnant?? And happy about it?? I can't think of a character who would want a baby less in possibly all of fiction. She'd be sobbing about it, not jumping up and down from happiness

okay but when are we going to talk about what's really important: Ruan Lanzhu's moles
how did LJS ever get through a scene without kissing them, I don't even know, they're magnetic
you are right, you are SO RIGHT about the FACE MOLE AGENDA. holy moly, the face moles. I need a moment, ling jiushi needs a moment, we all need a moment.
I mean, it isn't enough he has a cute cheek mole. who doesn't love a cute cheek mole. I am team cheek mole! no, he has to be a drama llama and have the sexy eye moles too. how is this allowed. (there has to be a better word than eye moles, I'm so sorry for that unsexy travesty of a phrase.)
anyway, new headcanon: the real reason ling jiushi was so oblivious about the hardcore zero-subtlety flirting was because he was head empty, only face moles for 38 whole viki length episodes.

also: oscar just kind of lifting him up a bit. swinging him back and forth. lando delighted to be tiny. these r the moments i live for
nonnie be honest do i have to write a sequel to hot in it 😞

My actual most controversial Gale headcanon is that his “practiced tongue” line is an overestimation of his skills. He learns fast, and he’s very enthusiastic, plus he’s got a number of wizard tricks up his sleeve—but his tongue game alone? It takes a while for him to really get the hang of it again.
YES! YES ME TOOOOO I think he's just very full of himself lmao. I do think he learns quickly but I definitely don't think he's the best pussyeater in that party. In a party with Minthara, Lae'zel and Halsin??? Madness.

Not to be a bitch but I'm genuinely tired of seeing people call this game a “banban ripoff” or “youtuberbait” this project was clearly made with care can we start uplifting creators instead of dragging their stuff through the mud because people wanted to stream the game. Sorry

I think most Melusines would find Abyss Heralds/Lectors to be peak conventional beauty and be attracted to them the same way Chlothar Alberich did, and in fact Sigewinne's romantic interest in Wrio is considered unconventional among Melusines the same way some people are confused about certain fetishes. Thoughts?
My friend you are so correct, I can't believe it took this ask for me to see the obvious. If Elynas found Jakob's new Iniquitous Baptist form to be, I quote, "So tall and strong!", then of course his daughters would have similar tastes. We already know they find Riftwolves to be cute dogs, so no doubt Heralds, Lectors and the like are the height of attractiveness to them.
To them humans are a race they want to befriend, but not one they find particularly attractive (the opposite is true in the exact same way). It doesn't mean they're opposed to it - they're lower on the scale of what they find attractive, but not outside of it entirely. Still, Sigewinne's choice is definitely unconventional, that's the best word for it. Just like Wriothesley finding mélusines, in all their off-putting eldritch glory, attractive, is unconventional to other humans.
(That said, there's exactly one party who's overjoyed by this development, and that's Elynas. He could never coexist with humans the way he wished back when he was alive, so for his daughters to not only be able to achieve that, but also truly love humans and be loved in return... What a beautiful thing!)
