i have no caption for this other than i hope anyone else who read That report - especially those of you who under 25 - are doing okay and keeping yourself safe today and that it's okay if you need to log off and find a distraction for a while (that's exactly what this piece was to me!)
[IMAGE ID: "salvation exists in the eyes of any transsexual who sees their own divine potential" in white wavy text which a dark pink border. behind the text is a collage of white eyes with pink hearts in the pupils. white starts and heart decorate the image. the background is pink and the border is white. 'Safequeer' mfers when people are queer in a way they don't like:
Tumblr media
[GIF ID: a toy decor skeleton getting absolutely eviscerated in a blue shredder with silver blades. Said skeleton looks like it's thrashing and flailing about as it slowly gets consumed. End ID]

I will delete this in a few hours because I don't like to leave these things up on my blog that is dedicated to queer affirming plushies but to all those who are leaving upset messages in my ask box regarding the vinician puppy design - I did do extensive research beforehand in regards to which mlm flags to use! If you have concerns about the ocean mlm/vinician flag I will ref this post to you which has sources and clears up several misconceptions about the flag. tldr (but I seriously recommend reading it) the creator of the flag is a completely different person than the problematic person who people often claim is the creator, and all pride flags take influence from each other.
it is important to me to spread queer positivity which is why I aim to be as inclusive as possible with my pride puppies. I was requested to make a mlm puppy quite a lot and I initially did not want to use this flag due to the controversy I had seen around it. Because I wanted to be inclusive I looked into it and learned that what I had heard was incorrect and changed my perspective.

I think it may say something about gamer culture that one of the oldest first person shooter franchises¹ only has two canonically queer characters², and both of them are from the same short story released in 2009³, where they are both killed.
¹: Halo
²: Felicia Sanderson and Allison Stark
³: Dirt

saw a post that was like
'i'm so floored by the fact that this mid-20th century author of historical fiction wrote about queerness as though it was natural and important!'
and it's like. the author in question was queer! queer people have been writing work in which queerness was natural and important since much earlier than the 50s—forster wrote maurice in the 1910s! whitman was writing poetry that celebrated queerness in the mid-19th century! i'm sure that if i did any actual research into the history of queer fiction instead of just whipping out the things that spring immediately to mind for me, many more examples would present themselves!
anyway i just think like. that sort of reflexive naive modern chauvinism is a real mistake (especially considering how things have been going in america lately…), and for anyone who is, or wants to be, a serious student of the past, worth scrutinizing and uprooting in oneself. queerness is present and positively depicted in some of the oldest literature we have; and when we encounter matter-of-fact, even celebratory, representations of it from eras we reflexively conceptualize as more conservative than ours, i think we need to be aware that any startlement we feel at that is an artifact of the repressive, erasive, homophobic thinking inculcated in us by our own particular milieu(x), and not in fact a neutral or historically informed reaction?

do secular people who didn't grow up with religion even know how many gay academics studying religion there are
"my academic study of christian apocrypha makes me anathema to all other gay men" have you tried meeting ex-catholics, or current episcopalians. maybe hanging out around seminaries. come on man it's like you're not even trying

queer discourse i hate you. do whatever you forever i literally do not care what labels people use i cannot imagine caring that much about what arbitrary words people use to describe themselves. gender doesn't make sense because it's a social construct so if you want to not be transphobic you have to completely omit enforcing gender entirely when it comes to labels. nobody is forcing you to date people you're not attracted to so if someone who identifies as a lesbian isn't your type you can still exist peacefully with them you ignorant conservative fucks

Now that some of the biggest voices in right wing media is openly attacking asexual people the same way they've been attacking LGBT people, you think all those aphobic queer people are gonna have a rude awakening and realize just how fucking stupid they've been, or are they just gonna keep following in the footsteps of TERFs like they've always done and go "well the fascists are right about this one!"

dear god that would be turbo cringe or whatever, but seeing all those annoying little things in fics over and over again really makes me want to write one in which they're not obligatory funnymoments but rather like, words that have meaning and weight and so on
#shrimp thoughts#like. 1. characters acting all cryptic and condescending when their friend who isn't aware they're queer and in love comes to them for#advice like 'oh figure it out yourself baby :)' that's so obnoxious. this is a romcom not a hero's journey you're TWENTY not a Wise Mentor#2. characters acting condescending and rolling their eyes soooo hard about how their friend hasn't figured/took them so long to figure out#they're queer because it was so obvious! how can you be so dense! or: how can you be IGNORANT of kink matters (that we never told you about#3. characters making retching noises and complaining how disgusting/gross their friends are once they get together. the friends aren't#like frenching or fucking on the dining table but just smiling at each other. free pass at homophobia nonetheless ig#4. characters reacting to any sort of doubts/internal conflict their friend has with 'omg who cares just do the thing! stop overthinking!'#ETC ETC#so many times i've started reading a good fic with an otherwise engaging characterization only for the writer to pull an Easy Fan Favourite#like one of the above and like ggggghhhhhhhhhh#if it was one (1) character in one (1) fandom or even just a type of characters i wouldn't mind AS MUCH but it's everyone whether it makes#sense for them or not. is this guy calm and sensitive? doesn't matter! he's going to do and say the same things a silly chatterbox type#of a character because telling your friends they're gross for being a couple is universal now#OH i almost forgot. everyone's having kinky sex of many different kinds but react like twitter teenagers to any mention of sex in general#'ew! TMI! i don't want to hear about all the insane shit you do in your bedroom! not in front of the children! not while i'm eating!'#'just read better fanfiction' look i'm TRYING i'm TRYING OKAY

"The handmaiden is male gazey" did you know lesbians like fucking other women sexy style? Did you know that a large theme in the handmaiden was the male gaze and misogyny and if you can't separate explorations of a harmful idea from endorsements of it you may be hopeless?
guys I knew it I knew that would be a comment inflammatory enough to attract my first hate anon cut the cameras we did it bois :D
#did you know *I'm* a lesbian that is into that shit also? no because reading comprehension website#they're shot like they're doing that for the cameras not for each other so kind of shoots the message on the foot depending on how you look#never said it's endorsement I said it made *me* uncomfortable and bored because I've seen a dozen movies like that and I'm tired#not to mention this is a critical darling of a film#I'm well aware it isn't the movies fault that a bunch of film bros talk about how hot the scenes are but it still irks me#and were the people in charge of the filmaking process women btw? NO much less queer women they were mostly cis men#she had absolutely no qualms about playing a homosexual character#which in Korea actors can be considerably reluctant to do.#<- those two are straight from an interview with the guy the gayness was novelty and shock value#not to mention bestie it was inspired by a book go sing the praises of that while you're at it#that's where the thread of criticism towards the institutions of misogyny were pulled from#In Fingersmith Waters uses her depiction of lesbian love between Maud and Sue to challenge a variety of hetero-patriarchal norms#my god that name's hilarious#you don't need to defend the honor of a queer story that was adapted with a straight audience in mind#and this convinced me to check the book out idk about you but I'd rather see the version actually told by a lesbian 😊#a tag for asks#also ut's queerness is very gender identity related and I think people generally don't appreciate that as much as they do sex stuff

unpopular opinion but a ship being queer coded doesn't make it compelling
#the dynamic between the characters‚ on another hand‚ does!#sometimes ships from certain media are carried by 'queer coding' instead of being relevant because of the actual relationship#that‚ to me‚ means very little#what does it matter if their colours compliment each other or that their names are intended to hint at something if the relationship in#the story fails to portray anything romance-like or their dynamic is just poorly written?#i could go on a tangent here because this is coming from me wanting to rant about a specific genshin ship but i will shut up#i just want to be a hater#i don't even hate the ship itself it's the fans who take scenes out of context and depth from the characters to make the narrative fit#also the constant idea in fandoms that friendships/platonic relationships can't have depth or be the reason someone cares deeply for#somebody else. or even the idea platonic feelings can't be complicated.#i think it's also hard for me to swallow every genshin ship because it's obvious they use queer coding without compromise as a way to#profit with both the staights and the lgbts but whatever#yes i am aware of the censorship but i'm also aware they're a multi-millionaire company that keeps repeating the same 'formula'#for marketing everytime new characters are released... and it works.#genshin will never be as gay as actual gay media from gay creators and i think people have a hard time grasping that#a bit unrelated to my original point but also not really because i do think it influences the way people interact with the story#i'm not trying to say people can't have fun by the way 😂#this all started because i dislike a popular ship and that makes you feel like you're somehow missing a few screws#how come i'm the only right person here 🤣 (joking)

God I truly truly hate the way people decide to engage with art based on the social context around it rather than anything to do with what the art is in itself. Obviously almost everything I like has an audience in mind to some extent (as most everything does under capitalism) but there's something that deeply fucking bugs me about the way people decide whether or not to engage with something based on whether it's "for" them, rather than engaging first and deciding if it's for you as a specific person after the fact.
I understand that art (and especially discussion of art) exists within a social context but why should that context override a person's own sensibilities and experiences? Outside of like, shit that is personally off-limits (for trauma reasons or smth similar) I think people should at least try to keep an open mind about as broad a range of art as possible.
Go watch Eega, The Wicker Man (1973), whatever's the highest rated episode of Bluey on IMDB, Terrifier, Double Indemnity, an uncommentated playthrough of Heaven Will Be Mine, and the 1980s soviet-produced adaptation of Treasure Island.
In that order.
Now.
