Didn't want to derail someone else's post, so I made my own:
"Someone else" is Chara
During the final boss of Undertale's pacifist route, an amalgamation of almost every soul in the underground under the control of Asriel Dreemurr, you call upon your friends by name in order to save them from the crowd. After your friends, there's the prompt to call "someone else".
Note: I chose to source my grabs for this post from ManlyBadassHero's playthrough because anime is real.
Tumblr media
Note: I've left out headcanony arguments, including anything to do with NarraChara (because don't get me started), in order to focus on stuff we actually see in game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fandom seems to have settled on this "someone else" being Asriel, but it's not. "Someone else" is PlayerName. It's the First Fallen Human.
Note: I'm deliberately using "PlayerName"/"Chara"/"the First Fallen Human" interchangeably. It was expected by the team that on your first playthrough of Undertale, you'd name the fallen child your own name (Toby's Twitter: "Your own name. ... if you can't think of anything else lol" / Temmie's Twitter: "bc u r Chara.") and I think it's helpful to keep that in mind.
Indications against "someone else" being Asriel:
The "whoa, Flowey is Asriel!" reveal has just happened. It showed his name in big text and everything; his name isn't any kind of big reveal. There's no reason to censor it.
You SAVE Asriel shortly after this point. There'd be no purpose in the game calling him one thing and then changing to calling him Asriel.
This is Asriel's immediate reaction when you call this person's name. Supposing you'd just yelled OI ASRIEL GOAT BOY at him, that doesn't really explain this much confusion.
Tumblr media
Indications in favour of "someone else" being Chara:
At this point in the game, "whoa, the character we're controlling isn't PlayerName!" IS still unrevealed. The first-time player doesn't know and Asriel doesn't know (or let himself accept it) yet, either. This gives a concrete reason for concealing the name by calling it "someone else".
Asriel's confusion, continued: his confusion makes much more sense if you just yelled PlayerName in his face. "What are you doing...!?" (You ARE PlayerName, aren't you? What are you, a Pokémon?)
We can easily establish that Frisk knows the First Fallen Human's name: Asriel has been calling them by it.
The First Fallen Human is alluded to elsewhere as coming when you call their name. So, what happens the moment you call this name? Someone answers.
The answer comes in the form of several flashback pictures. The first?
Tumblr media
The rest of the pictures show both Asriel and Chara, but not this one. Your immediate, first answer is Chara alone.
These flashback images insert a lot of (cutscene) time between the player-initiated actions to "SAVE > Someone else" and "SAVE > Asriel Dreemurr". The acts don't happen one directly after another; they're separated by time and consequently could easily be two separate people being acted upon.
Weak argument but satisfying: Toby's writing makes extensive use of subtle callbacks. The Human's "demon that comes when people call its name" line at the end of the murder route at first seems to be out of nowhere—but it becomes foreshadowed, and hence a lot more satisfying, if "someone else" in Pacifist was them.
We're all sick of pronoun discourse by now and this is another weak argument, so please no clowning in my notes or it's blockening time, but: you call "their name" and not "his". Flowey and Asriel are only ever he/him, and Asriel's gender isn't any kind of reveal at this point. By contrast, the First Fallen Child is only ever referred to with they/them, including by Asriel.
I don't think this makes a significant difference in the experience or interpretation of the game. It's a small detail in a climactic scene. But it does surprise me when I see the almost universal assumption that this is Asriel.
For me, it's much more satisfying for Asriel's final moments of character development if Frisk themself, at the instant of Asriel's greatest turmoil, suddenly and loudly asserts themself as their own person. They're not his long-dead sibling. They're not PlayerName. They're not a blank slate, a player substitute, a vehicle. They're a weird flirtatious perpetually-hungry child with their own personality—it's enormously significant to me that this is the only route in which Frisk is able to assert their own name and walk out of the player's control at the end. Frisk doing the unexpected, calling upon Asriel's beloved sibling right in front of his crybaby goat eyes, ripping away the veil of his grief, is a huge blow—but a necessary one. Asriel may fight on for a while longer, but the battle was over at that moment.

In conclusion, hug gote or run is invalid. kthx ♥

Self-Loathing and other wrong doings
Okay! This was requested by an Anon, and it is a modern twist on things with a chubby reader. Arthur's gonna help the reader with those nasty thoughts of hers, and he's gonna make things all better, as he typically does.
I'll have this linked on my modern masterlist once I'm done! and I hope you guys can enjoy this!
You'll have to excuse me, I have to find out where I put my tags list before I can actually tag y'all- just be patient with me if you can! I'll get back into the swing of it!
Tumblr media
(Here's one of my Arthur Images from one of my playthroughs lmao)
Warnings: Smut, so 18+, self hate and similar themes, meaning negative thoughts, chubby reader, and female reader, modern AU. Fuck it I'm making arthur chubby too cause I can. I think that should be all!
let's get started!
You stare yourself down in the mirror, your hands placed against your stomach, looking at the way it pudged out, pushed out further than the rest of your body.
It wasn't flat, like it should have been. Perhaps if it was you'd hate yourself less. You had nice hips, and your upper half wasn't bad, but that stomach. It's what makes you upset. What makes you wonder why your amazing boyfriend was even with you in the first place.
Every time you saw yourself in the mirror you couldn't ever manage to feel anything but distain for yourself. You always felt so massive.
You had no idea how Arthur could stand to look at you.
You'd planned on taking a shower, that's why you were in here in the first place, but you no longer had an interest in doing so. Your mind felt dark, your head heavy. You just felt...wrong. Uncomfortable in your own skin.
You quietly redress yourself and then leave the bathroom, shutting off the light and pulling the door shut as you head into the hallway of your home.
You make a beeline for your bedroom, thankful that your breakdown has come on a day off, rather than when you'd been at work.
Crawling into the bed feels better than standing, you pull the covers up to your chin, and lie on your side, curled into yourself, as the tears begin to fall.
Your head screams obscenities at you, talking poorly about yourself to you.
Calling you names that you'd already heard throughout your entire life.
"Fatass."
"Ugly"
"Lard on legs"
You weren't the ideal girl, not to anyone. Not even to yourself. Maybe Arthur was gonna text you one of these days and tell you how disgusting you were, and finally leave you, like you deserved.
The tears get heavier, falling down your face faster as the thought enters your mind.
Arthur was your everything, he meant the world to you. If he left you, what would become of you? You'd spiral without him. You know you would. Hell you were spiraling now, and he hadn't even said anything to you.
You're in the middle of wiping the tears on your face when your phone rings, vibrating on the mattress beside you. As if he knew you were thinking about him, his name flashes on the screen, Arthur, with a little heart next to it.
You sniffle and hope you won't sound too bad when you answer, and pick up the phone, turning on speaker phone.
"Hey darlin'! I jus' got outta work, I'm headed your way, figured since you were off I'd just swing by and stay the night with ya, so long as you don't mind."
"That's fine, Love." You answer, swallowing at the thought of him joining you. You'd have to pull yourself together.
"You alright? You sound like you've been cryin' Princess..."
"'M fine Art, just...thinkin'."
"Well, I'll be there in....fifteen minutes at the most, and we'll talk about whatever's botherin' you, I can't have ya cryin' on me now."
He chuckles, and it warms your chest, even over the phone he eases your senses, what would you do when he finally opened his eyes and realized what you looked like?
"Okay, I'll see you then Art."
"I love ya Sweetheart."
"I love you too."
He seems hesitant to hang up, but after a moment he does and leaves you in silence once again.
Your tears continue to come, no matter how much you try to get them to stop, they just keep coming.
Before you realize it, you hear the door open and the sound of Arthur's footsteps as he makes his way down the hall to your room.
He stands in the doorway, and looks at you, and when you turn your head to look at him the look on his face only makes your heart pang worse.
"Oh...Darlin' what are you cryin' for? What's goin' on?"
He wastes no time moving to the bed, kicking off his work boots before he climbs in and cradles you into his chest, and you expected it to comfort you, which, it did, however, you didn't expect to start crying harder.
"Hey now..."
He hushes you and you feel his hand come to your hair, gently petting your head, trying to make you feel more comfortable.
"Talk to me Princess...what's goin' on?"
You swallow and look up at him as your tears fall down your face.
"How can you love someone like me Arthur? Someone who looks like me, who...who's disgusting?"
Arthur looks back at you with a facial expression that you can only describe as...offended.
"The hell are you talkin' about woman?"
"How can you love me, when I look like this?"
"Y/N, what on earth do you mean?"
You huff and stand, grabbing his wrist and pulling him out of the bed. You drag him down the hall and into the bathroom. You flip the light switch on and look directly into the mirror.
"Look at me."
You mumble.
"Look at the way I'm shaped, the way my body looks. I'm not skinny, I'm not flat. I'm uneven, lumpy...disgusting. Why are you still here? Why haven't you left me and found someone who deserves you? Why are you still with me, when I'm nothing?"
Arthur's brow furrows and a frown covers his face as he looks in the mirror at your form. He turns and grabs your shoulders, forcing you too look at him.
"Y/N, what the fuck did you just say to me?"
"Why are you still here?"
"Because I wanna be! Cause I love ya damnit! I never wanna hear you talk about yourself like that ever again. Never."
"I'm telling the truth!"
"The hell if you are."
His expression goes soft and he cups your face in his large palm.
"Y/N, you're absolutely beautiful. Gorgeous, a god damn treasure for me to behold everytime I see ya...I don't give a damn about the TV shows and the movies, or the magazines, flat stomachs ain't all that. I couldn't give two shits about whether or not someone has a flat stomach. In fact I PREFER, that you're bigger."
You look to the ground, avoiding his gaze.
"Darlin' look at me, I'm not small neither, ain't fit, I got a gut on me myself, but you're still around, why would I be any different?"
He was right. He's a large man, wide shouldered, barrel chested, and a bit of the stomach that hangs over his belt, but it suited him. Fit him well. He was strong too, as much as he would deny it, he was. His biceps were about the size of your head.
"Because...you look...normal."
You mumble.
"You look good, it fits good, you're big and strong, and I'm...just big. Fat, and flabby."
"No. Don't you dare call yourself fat."
You frown as you look at him, and then he slides his arms around your waist, turns you towards the mirror and stands behind you.
"I want you to see what I see in this mirror."
He pauses.
"I see my beautiful girlfriend, who, even with tears in her eyes manages to blow me away. She's soft, and welcoming, and absolutely adorable, I ain't never once looked at her and thought she was ugly, or unlovable, in fact the first time I laid eyes on her I felt like I was in love."
You swallow, looking at his face in the reflection.
"I see my girlfriend, who's got the sexiest hips I've ever seen anywhere. I see my beautiful woman, who's the sweetest, kindest, and most lovely person I've ever come across."
"I see the person I love, and the person I want to come home to everyday. The woman I'm HOPING, to marry someday, hoping to spend the rest of my life with, if she lets me."
You stay silent and tears seem to only get worse.
"Darlin' I love you. With all my heart."
He states, his voice quiet in your ear.
"I love how you look, how you sound, who ya are, everythin' about you makes me happy. I like that you're a bigger girl. I don't want you to be skinny. There's more for me to hold the way you are now, and I ain't gotta be gentle with you, I don't have to worry I'm gonna hurt you."
He leans in and kisses your shoulder, then your neck.
"Ain't never once cared about you bein' skinny, and I don't want you to be. I kiss that stomach o' yours everytime we're intimate. You know that. I love it, and I love you."
"I just...Arthur I...I hate me. I hate the way I look, I hate-"
"Darlin' you're breakin' my heart."
You turn and face him, looking up at him.
His eyes seem tired, almost broken as he looks back at you, sad.
"I love you."
He murmurs, bringing a hand to your chin to tilt your head up.
"I ain't goin' nowhere, even if you think I should, I ain't. I'm stickin' by you. What kinda man would I be if I let the best woman I've ever met slip outta my fingers?"
You simply hug him tightly, feeling his arms wrap around you as your head hits his chest.
"I love you Princess."
"I love you Arthur."
He sighs and rests his chin on your head.
"What started all this anyhow?"
"I wanted to take a shower and...I...you know I saw myself naked."
"Sweetheart, I promise you, seein' you naked is my favorite part of anyday if I'm given the chance to see it."
You can't help but laugh a little, and wipe your eyes.
"You still need a shower?"
You give a nod.
"I'll join you, if you want. I need one myself, covered in oil and grease, and god knows what else."
"Will you please? I think I'll feel better with you there. I won't focus on how I look so much."
"Anythin' for ya Princess." He kisses your forehead, pushing some of your hair out of the way. "Stay here, I'll go back to your room and get you some pj's. You finally got all my stuff put into whatever drawer it is you wanted it in right?"
"Yeah, left side, the top two drawers."
"Alright, I'll grab our clothes and I'll be right back. Why don't you start the shower and grab the towels for us, okay?"
He leaves and heads back to your room, and you feel a bit better, more hopeful. Your chest is lighter, so is your head, and you even smile as you turn the shower on.
He was a wonderful man. He deserved the world, and you'd gladly give it to him, given the chance.
You find two towels easily and place them on the counter before you strip down and get into the shower, pulling the curtain shut.
The water is hot, but not hot enough to burn, and you again smile as the water hits your skin.
You hear the sound of the door opening and Arthur drops off the clothes on the counter. You listen as he shimmies out of his clothes and then you hear the curtain open from the other end.
He comes up behind you, wrapping his arms around your waist, pressing his body to yours, offering a kiss to your bare shoulder.
"See...this ain't so bad."
"It's not bad when you're here."
He chuckles and it rumbles through you, just as it rumbles through him.
"You are beautiful, inside and out."
He whispers, kissing your cheek.
"I'm gonna have you admitting it, I will. I ain't gonna let you sit here and hate yourself. I can't do that."
"Good luck on that Hon."
"I will get you to say it."
He states, this time it's firm, less playful.
"I ain't gonna let you sit here and say all these awful things about yourself anymore."
He kisses your neck again, this time there's a difference in the way his lips feel against your skin.
It's more...possessive, marking.
"Arthur..."
"If ya won't believe my words maybe I can prove it to ya...if you're alright with that..."
You think for a moment, but it doesn't take long for you to decide.
You nod, and twist your head to kiss him on the cheek.
"You sure?"
You nod again.
"Yes Arthur. I'm sure. I want this."
He nods and again kisses your neck, again it's bruising, you know the skin there will be a purple hue.
His hands travel over the skin of your stomach, gentle, loving. His thumbs move back and forth against the skin there, hoping to reassure you.
His hands travel lower, caressing your thighs as he kisses your shoulders, mumbling under his breath about how much he loves you.
His right hand finds it's way towards your heat, he's gentle, two fingers slipping past your folds as he murmurs in your ear.
Your heart speeds as you feel the familiar stretch of his fingers.
"Arthur..."
"You deserve to feel good Princess..."
He kisses your cheek again, fingers curling within you. You feel his hardness against your rear, it's obvious it doesn't take much when he's with you.
The showerhead rains down on the two of you, adding to the sensation.
Arthur's fingers never stop moving, moving gently, slowly. He's in no rush. In fact he's doing his utmost to take all the time in the world with you.
He rocks his hips against you, just barely. Trying to help himself as he helps you.
It's sweet, in a way.
It's a long while before his hand even dares reach for your clit, and when it does, he seems to know exactly what to do, exactly how fast or slow to move, what direction to move.
He's been with you long enough to know.
That too is sweet.
You can't help but mumble his name over and over again as he continues with his way, a smile on his face as he moves his hips against you, his hand in tandem.
It feels like forever passes before you finally come upon your climax, quietly moaning out his name as you lean your head back against his shoulder.
It's slow, but it's just as good as it would have been otherwise.
He never stops kissing you, or telling you how he loves you.
He's more than what you could have asked for,

A Plebian's Review of the Last Voyage of the Demeter
I don't do reviews normally but I have many thoughts I wanted to share after recently watching this movie. In general, I did enjoy this movie and I thought it was a fun watch. As someone who read Dracula and enjoys most modern Dracula stories I would watch it again if it came on. (6/10)
Non-spoilers:
It took some liberties with the source material. Combine the recent Poirot movies with modern vampire lore and that's what you should expect, not something strictly adhering to the novel. Not necessarily a bad thing, but if you're enjoying dracula daily just know this isn't really that.
On that note, Dracula bibliophiles aside, it's a pretty good movie on its own. It's suited for modern audiences and won't confuse them with Stoker's vampire lore (ex. what can and can't kill a vampire, what powers Dracula has).
It had pretty gory moments that you may not be prepared for if slasher movies aren't something you watch. Also, check out doesthedogdie bc there are a lot of potential triggers.
The lighting for this movie was really good imo. There was a strong contrast between day and night which awesome, but you could also still actually see what was going on in the dark. There were a couple times when Dracula was in a shadow and you couldn't really see him but it was for effect as opposed to trying to be "realistic" (looking at you, GOT).
The design for Dracula was cool and they do play into him getting stronger and scarier as he continuously feeds.
The Captain is not the main character (in contrast to the source material's Captain's log). Here, it's Dr Clemens we follow and we get an occasional Caltain's narration from the log.
If you like Until Dawn and other titles from Supermassive Games, you'd probably enjoy it. Dracula's design, the kills, and character choices feel like you're watching a playthrough. Not to mention there are a lot of close-up shots of characters in the same way Supermassive Games does.
Spoilers under the cut:
The Good:
The cinematography was pretty good. I particularly liked shots that followed through the ship to the cargo hold where count bat boi was sleeping.
They also filmed the gory scenes really well, and one scene that stood out was when one person who's become a thrall bashes his head through a door and then slides his nose along the splintered panels as he looks up. Impactful to say the least. They didn't pan away and leave it up to our imaginations but went all in and I applaud it.
Things were recognizable from the novel (names, events, some vampire mythos). I was genuinely surprised that they marked Dracula's coffins with dragons and kept that he slept in dirt, since modern audiences probably wouldn't have known about these things. When we (modern audiences) hear "Dracula" we think it means "vampire" as opposed to "dragon", and we would likely expect Dracula's cargo to be velvet-lined coffins.
The opening scene (finding the ship at Whitby & the wagon train of the coffins) had me immediately invested and excited, and I was already looking forward to this movie (I chose it over Barbie lol).
The Captain's actor was phenomenal. He went all out when he was grieving Toby's death and he really didn't have to but I'm so glad he did. While the character itself wasn't consistent, the actor made it believable. He was strict and kind when he was sane, he was frantic and distraught when he was insane, and his moments of grief and hope were all palpable. Good choice.
"Oh my God it has wings" When I say I LAUGHED SO HARD
Honestly there were a lot of funny moments. Some were genuine to cut the tension and help build characters but being ND and desensitized to horror I don't know if I was supposed to laugh at some of them, like when the cook's dingy knocked against the side of the hull. And when vampire Toby jumped up.
The use of knocking was a cool addition. I enjoyed when they used it like when Toby was in trouble and when Dracula was messing with the two dudes on deck.
One of the key things of Dracula's personality is that yes - he can kill you in 10s - but he won't because he's a sadistic bastard that enjoys drawing it out and playing the wager to see if you'll die of fear before he can bite you. They absolutely captured it. Homie is purposeful in how he terrifies his victims before giving them a gruesome death.
I think the model ship they showed at the end was the original model ship for the Demeter in the 90's Dracula movie (or at least a nod to it), which is how this movie was started apparently. Nice touch.
The Grievances:
Dr Clemens was a mary sue. I'm sorry, there's no way around this. Man has bad main character syndrome. I can accept a black man fighting tooth and nail to graduate Cambridge top of his class and struggle in a world that won't see his abilities because they won't look past his skin color, but on top of that he's an astronomer, a sailer, a strategist, a detective, and everyone immediately falls in love with him? Hell, he cured Toby's [1] grief over losing his lifelong friend (Huck, the dog, who was MUTILATED) and [2] guilt for all the animals dying because it was his responsibility to take care of him, and [3] fear for whatever unknown thing did this, with a headpat and "sometimes shit happens and you can't do anything about it".
He took one look at Anna, Dracula's beef jerky ration, and immediately went "she has an infection, she needs a blood transfusion", then proceeded to give her repeated transfusions over several days and he was totally fine. Up running around and fighting vampires meanwhile in reality he would have been bedridden from lack of blood and possible complications from the procedures.
Also, why is he the only clean person? Everyone's covered in grime and blood and dude looks like he just walked out of a proactive commercial. Even when he's floating in the middle of the ocean for days with an open neck wound he looks like he was just in the shower. Compare it with the Captain's burns and the first thrall's face after banging the through a door and the dissonance just pulls me out of the movie.
Keeping him alive just to sequel bait. Just. Why. Hollywood, it's okay to kill your protagonist. 1912 did it really well. Plus, I personally wasn't invested enough in this character to want to see a sequel following his vendetta with Dracula. We already know about Jonathan and Van Helsing. You can make movies that stand alone. It's okay.
If you want to sequel bait why don't you have him delirious from being lost at sea for several days and end up at the asylum with Dr Seward and Renfield? That would actually be cool and you could still have Dracula show up to taunt him.
Also, in regards to Anna, while I think it was a cool idea to use her for lore dumping and as a surprise for the audience, I was disappointed with her. She had the potential to provide a lot of info and help fight Dracula but instead she had to be the "strong independent woman". I don't hate this trope (think about Ripley in Alien, or any of the women in the original novel) but it wasn't done well here. While it's cool to see her gain confidence and wield a gun against count bat boi I was really hoping she would provide more info like his weaknesses. She says "he ran out of food in my country" but we know this isn't *literally* true because we see people at the beginning. It's the fact her people knew how to keep Dracula away that he ran out of food and he decided to try greener pastures. You could bring up HOW they did that (religious tokens, garlic, silver, etc.).
Also when she does try to give info about Dracula it's still vague and meant to be mysterious. Bruh, you are locked on a boat with this monster and you know your only hope for survival is to flee or work together to get rid of him. Why are you not giving as much info and details as possible? Because that's what the script said bc the writers wanted to make dracula look cool by relying on the characters to say it? Okay.
This movie relies on a lot of telling instead of showing. It's like they don't trust their audience to pay attention or understand what's going on. The only time I legit felt they showed and not told (lol) was when the Captain asked if what happened to the animals could be transmitted to humans and Dr Clemens lied and said no. You could see in the actor's face the inner monologue of telling the truth vs preventing chaos. It was nice and gave more info about the character than him actually yelling his life history at the first mate.
It also suffers from the writers trying to make every scene be memorable. There are too many times characters say things because it sounds cool or would be good in the trailer rather than because it makes sense for the character to say that.
Honestly all the characters fall flat for me (besides the captain who's character is treated like a pinball). They're all archetypes rather than people. The protagonist. The independent woman. The racist drunkard. The child. The religious guy. The guy that makes obscene jokes. The only names I know are Toby, Dr Clemens, and Anna. Bc they get said a lot as opposed to me actually caring about them.
On that note, I am definitely biased because I loved the Captain's log from the novel, but I wish that this was from the Captain's pov, culminating in him tying himself to the wheel and dying from shock or exposure like in the book. Then Whitby.
On that note, I am still upset that they used modern vampire mythos yet again for Dracula. In the book the Captain dies after being taunted for days by Dracula after tying himself to the wheel, only possible because the rosary in his hand protects him. It's a noble but horrific sacrifice made of fear and a duty to not let the evil on the ship reach land. In this movie, however, he reaches the wheel and dies because the rosary has no power over Dracula (it's also how Toby dies).
Oh, also the sun kills vampires. How do we know? Because occasionally some people turn into vampires, but only when it's convenient for the plot (looking at you, Anna). Why don't they use this against Dracula and dump the dirt box they know he's sleeping in during the day? Who knows. But they wasted a lot of potential to play on the audience's expectations (rather than giving into them) by using Dracula during the day. Y'know what's scarier than a vampire picking off your crew at night? A vampire picking off your crew at ANY time when you only expect it at night because SURPRISE sunlight just doesn't let him crawl in lizard fashion.
Are you seriously telling me Dracula sustained himself off of Anna for several weeks, and then decided to slaughter the crew mere days before the boat docked? Yes, he was weak bc of it but I don't think the director knows how blood works (see Dr Clemens's transfusion issue). Also, if that's the case, how did Anna not suffocate in her dirt box for hours on end for weeks? Just fill the other 48 crates with dead people and say Anna was the last caprisun in the box and it would make more sense.
Also, why have their last hurrah be the day before they reach Whitby? It made the movie seem too fast; it felt like it only took a week to get from Transylvania to England. Why not find Anna early on, then disperse the crew member deaths across a couple weeks like in the novel? It would help with the suspense and you could have the Captain tie himself to the wheel then let us experience the time passing after he dies so the audience has a moment to sit with the deaths and feel hopeless. Bc that's what the role of the Demeter is, story-wise. It's supposed to make us afraid of Dracula and feel hopeless in his presence. Not give us hope and make him into our rival we have the possibility to get revenge on. That's what our dear friend Jonathan is for.
Dracula never takes human form. Why do all adaptations refuse to give him his bushy mustache? COWARDS.
Okay, he *sort of* takes human form. But they really just put him in a waistcoat and top hat then expected us to believe that showed he was cunning. You literally said he's both man and beast then only show the beast. One of Dracula's main appeal is that he's clever and his sadistically human traits are the only thing preventing him from immediately ripping you to shreds. And he can pass as human, so he could be anyone. Yet we only see the beast part.
While this movie was fun to watch, it comes off more as a gruesome drama or action movie than a horror. I never really feel any suspense or dread. Compare it to Alien which had the same situation. Alien did such a good job of making you feel scared and claustrophobic when you're surrounded by the vastness of space (in this case, the ocean) and being hunted down by an intelligent monster. I was watching this to see how Dracula killed people rather than seeing how they struggled to survive.
I can believe this movie was in production hell not just because of the writing but some errors. In one scene, the Captain's burn is on the right side of his face but there's a close-up cut and suddenly it's on the left side like someone flipped the screen. And this is just one error out of a couple. No Starbucks cups tho.
It sounds like I don't like this movie because of all of my nit-picking grievances, but I really did like it. I think my issues are just because my expectations were too high going in. I was expecting a loyal expansion of an underappreciated segment of a classic novel, which is really rare these days. And a *suspenseful* horror.
I see why Guillermo del Toro and Stephen King suggested it. It's pretty similar to their stuff, just more fast-paced. So if you like that stuff and Until Dawn I think you'll really enjoy it.

Frank West, sharp dressed man with a guitar.
Tumblr media
Considering Frank's expression, Jonathan is SO LUCKY he didn't get an acoustic to the back of his head, lol!
But what I was actually doing here was going for the Saint achievement: get at least 50 survivors out of the mall.
Tumblr media
And I got it! Eee, I didn't think I could because, my WORD, somebody said that the survivors in Dead Rising are like trying to herd cats and I think that actually herding cats would be easier!
But I made it with 51, whew!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dr. Barnaby dies if you progress the story, so he was unavoidable. Ronald was being a jerk so I abandoned him, lol. And I had to back up to a save point to try to get almost the entire bottom row in time annnnnd I forgot to go back and save Gil the second time. Oops. Sorry, dude. But thankfully you have a little bit of a cushion to still get to 50, whew!
The trick is to use the waypoints to tell them to go to a place with no/few zombies while Frank clears out the most of them, then to move them forward a bit more, continue clearing the way, rinse-repeat until you hopefully get them back to the Security Room in one piece. 🤞😣🤞 If you just point them towards the goal or just call them to you, they'll inevitably run right into an obstacle or a pack of zombies and die while you're trying to help everybody AND keep yourself alive.
Ask me how I know that. 😑😉
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sophie is demonstrating a form of this in the Security Room by being stuck behind the door but just walking, walking, walking to nowhere, lol! I love how Frank's looking at her like, How did I even get you back here alive, Sophie??? 🤔😂
Anyway! In the run right before this one...
Tumblr media
...Isabela was clearly questioning Frank's fashion sense! 😮
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frank: "NOOOOOOOO, HOW COULD YOU, ISABELA?????"
But! If you happen to know your Dead Rising, you'd know Frank is on top of a tank and that means we won Infinity Mode! (And surprisingly, Unbreakable at the same time, woo!)
Tumblr media
Now, I have no plans to try for the 5 and 7 Day Survivor achievements because, frankly, *ba dum tss* 😂 they sound awful. Everybody, even the survivors, are trying to kill Frank, your health continually depletes, there isn't nearly as much food available on the map AND it doesn't respawn but, hardest of all, you can't save, so you have to play the entire game in one go. For 7 Day Survivor, that's 14 hours in real time! 😵‍💫
Back to Frank's awesome fashion sense, though...
Tumblr media
My dad came by while I was doing an earlier playthrough and I didn't realize he was behind me, watching. He finally said, "Don't you think he'd have an easier time killing zombies if you gave him some pants?"
To which I said, "Hey, Frank's a gentleman, he has pants."
Tumblr media
Or at least, boxers, lol!
Tumblr media
Brad seems to be confirming the presence of boxers. HIS EYES ARE UP HERE, BRAD.
Tumblr media
Clearly, Brad and Sara Ryder from Mass Effect: Andromeda have the same priorities, lol! 🤣🤣🤣
Tumblr media
We also tried out this look. Hot, sporty brawler with hat and golf club. Not bad! *nodnods*
But I just think he works it well in dresses, what can I say?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I'd never say no to the wrestler look either. I still say this is weirdly picturesque, lol!
Man, in fountain, with zombies ~Aislynn, 2024
Tumblr media
Don't give me that look, Otis. Just be glad buck naked wasn't an option, lol! 😇🤣
Oh man, I love this game. It's so much fun to play! 😎😎😎

So I've been watching @ohnoitstbskyen's play through of The Mageseeker, and been having a great time. The commentary is entertaining and insightful, as you'd probably expect if you're familiar with his content, and some of his comments got me thinking about a few things myself.
I've been on the fence about Mageseeker, since the whole point of the game seems to be to neatly wrap up the Mage Revolution plot that has been Demacia's ongoing arc for literally years now. I was on the fence about the Mage Revolution plot anyway, since it feels very much like the writers asked "how can we make our Generic Good Guy Fantasy Kingdom more nuanced and edgy", and the answer they came up with is "make them White Mana from Magic: The Gathering".
Still, TBSkyen's analysis in the videos below convinced me that there were interesting stories to tell with that premise, even if some of the writers weren't really handling it with the care it deserved.
youtube
youtube
Not having played the game, the concept of The Mageseeker felt like a hasty attempt by Riot to sweep a poorly thought out plotline under the rug so they could move on to other things. Who would have guessed that a "good" faction herding innocent people (including children) into concentration camps would be controversial?
Having watched a good chunk of the playthrough (and skipped to the end to get the final analysis), I can say that my fears were...somewhat unfounded? The game does mostly wrap up the plots around the Mageseekers and mostly puts a lid on the Mage Rebellion, but admits this is not a "clean" resolution and that the struggle will continue.
The real reason I've come around on The Mageseeker, however, is because I think it moves Demacia into a more narratively interesting place. "Outwardly good faction is secretly xenophobia, dogmatic, and committing a genocide" has honestly been done to death these days. What hasn't been done is "good faction realized 'whoops, we "accidentally" did a genocide', now what?". This is honestly pretty relatable, because if you live in Europe or anywhere Europe colonized, your national history probably includes some genocide.
So let's talk about Javan and Garen.
Jarvan ordered a genocide by knowingly signing an execution order for hundreds, potentially thousands of helpless mages (including children). It doesn't matter that he was "reluctant", it doesn't matter that he had to be talked into it, he willingly gave the order to exterminate an entire ethnic group ("magic" is technically not an ethnicity, but let's not split hairs here). Also his "preferred" alternative to executing them was to keep them locked up forever (which, yes, is still technically genocide), so even if you entirely blame the Mageseekers for the execution order he's still at fault.
Garen remained a loyal soldier even after Jarvan gave the order to commit genocide. He did initially object, but his objections were that his sister and friend might also get executed, not that the order itself was morally wrong. Even afterward, he only went outside of his role as Demacia's dutiful soldier to try and save his sister Lux. Only Lux, not any of the helpless mages she was sheltering, and when she asks him to join her in defending these defenseless people, Garen refuses. You could argue that Garen never actually harmed any mages himself (any mages that weren't trying to kill him first, anyway), but he certainly helped and when given the chance to flip to the oppressed side, he turned it down. At the end of the day, Garen was "just following orders", and we all know how much water that excuse holds.
So you have two "good" characters who very clearly did something monstrous. You also can't have them stop being "good" characters, because Riot sure as hell isn't going to go through all the effort to rebrand them at this point. So what do you do?
To be continued...

there is no perfect version of 999
I originally played 999 as part of the Nonary Games edition on Steam. I really enjoyed it, but I found the Adventure / Novel distinction annoying. In Adventure mode, you can see the art better and almost all text is voiced, but you're going to miss a lot of context. In Novel mode, you get more context, but you're going to be sitting there reading in silence a long while.
The port of VLR handled this better by deciding how the game would display for every line of dialogue in advance.
I tried to watch a playthrough a voice actor did, hoping the narration would help the experience, but they turned on Adventure mode immediately and their cohost kept stumbling on puzzles in a way that was painful to watch. But in the comments I saw someone say that the DS version handles this split better, with one screen being Adventure and the other being Novel.
And checking out the DS version, it is a lot more straightforward to follow in that aspect! No worrying that I'm missing something important, no text covering up the picture, no... voice acting, no... checkpoints, no... auto-advance...
Okay, seems like there are some tradeoffs.
My ideal version of 999 would have:
High-def text for ease of reading
Flowchart unlocked only after you've reached an ending—it would show branch points off of what you've currently seen, but not where that branch point goes until you've gotten there
Auto-advance toggle (holding down a button does not count, that's physical work)
Adventure and Novel either displayed simultaneously or swapped intelligently
FULL voice acting. Narrator too.
The narrator being voiced is important to me because this game has a lot of wordy exposition and frankly, if I wanted to read a novel, I would prefer to read a novel—the ink and paper type. I found it legitimately difficult to stay engaged for the long stretches of time between escape rooms, even though I cared about the plot, because my options were to click a button every time I finished reading a line (oof ouch my hand) or to hope that I processed the text in the time it was on the screen.
But wait, isn't there a good reason in-game that the narrator isn't voiced?
Yes, there is. And I know that reason. But I think I have a solution.
Major spoilers under the cut for the true endings of Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors and Virtue's Last Reward.
The reason the narrator in 999 isn't voiced is because the voice itself would be a spoiler for a major twist. The game is narrated by the child version of Akane Kurashiki, and even if a player didn't work out that it was the same voice actress, it would still be deeply odd, not knowing the twist, that it was being narrated by any child.
But my solution bypasses that entirely: Recast old Akane from VLR with an actual older woman using a naturalistic voice, and use the new actress for both 999's narration and old Akane's VLR dialogue.
Why old Akane? Well, time is already screwy, so why would an older version of her be any stranger than a younger one? An older person sounds like a suitable narrator in a way that a child doesn't, and it would be easy for players to assume the devs just wanted someone who wouldn't be mistaken for a member of the cast—Lotus, the oldest woman, is in her 30s-40s.
Why recast? Because a narrator needs to sound like they aren't putting on a voice, and no shade to Cindy Robinson, this wasn't the direction she was given, but I can tell she doesn't naturally sound like an old lady. And you'd want to give people the closure of hearing the same voice in the next game to cement that it really was Akane.
But what about the reveal? Excellent question. When the reveal happens, the voice acting switches to child Akane and continues for the rest of the game. In my dream version, upon clearing the game you'd unlock spoiler narration and could replay with child Akane the whole time.
A similar thing in reverse could be used to voice Sigma in VLR, though you'd only need to swap his dialogue voice and not his narration (because he still is mentally a young man).

Okay so I had a really weird Deltarune dream last night
So in the dream I was talking to someone about the game because I was planning to write about the game's story for school. They were also a fan and they mentioned to me that a new secret had been found in the game, sort of a Snowgrave-esque alternate path. I decided to check it out on my own via a set of instructions.
So what you had to do is play Ch. 2 with a Dark Candy carried over into your inventory from your Ch. 1 playthrough, I know this isn't possible in the actual game but in the dream a single Dark Candy will carry over if you had any. I don't think it could be done if you simply bought one from Seam in Castle Town but who knows honestly.
So you'd have to keep that Dark Candy in your inventory until the Sweet Cap'n Cakes fight, where you'd have to let Kris be downed. That's where the events of the game diverge, instead of Susie and Ralsei doing the actions upon their own accord they'll have the same conversation but you the player will have to select the S and R-Actions for them from the get-go. Instead of continuing the battle normally, use the battle turn to give Ralsei the Dark Candy. He'll deny it at first, saying he doesn't want it (since Kris is downed is he talking to the Player?) but you only need to command him to eat it a second time for him to accept it. He does so and one of two things will happen. In the dream I performed the same actions twice with no differences in my steps but got these two separate outcomes for reasons I do not know, I was confused even in the dream.
The first outcome has the screen go dark with the other sprites disappearing and Ralsei's sprite moving to the middle of the screen. Sort of reminiscent of Chara's appearance at the end of Undertale's No Mercy route. He'll perform a special eating animation and then his sprite changes, no animation for that I think it just switches abruptly. He turns into this orange guy, sort of knight-ish looking with maybe wings and a tail? Either a classic devil or dragon motif for sure. A name flashes above his head, sadly I cannot remember what it was but I assume that was the name of whoever he turned into. I'm keen to call him Avalon or something like that. He thanks Kris (maybe the Player?) for doing that, his "voice" in this form is much deeper further signifying that he's outright turned into a different person. Maybe this is supposed to be his true form?
The second outcome is practically the same but what happens to Ralsei after he eats the Dark Candy is different. His sprite will start to distort, like different pixels blown up or rotated or something. Not your typical glitch effect, more like Ralsei's body is literally supposed to be shifting like it's made out of goo. He doesn't actually end up changing that much though, he simply ends up in a new outfit. Something similar to what Spamton and Mystery Man wear. He once again thanks Kris/Player, but this time he explicitly thanks them for "freeing" him.
I don't know what happens after either outcome, I stopped playing the game immediately after both tries so I guess the game just shuts down or something. Also, for reasons unknown I was doing all of this on a laptop while sitting in a bathtub and when I finished the bathtub had filled up a bit and some tadpoles were swimming around in the water, both at different stages in development. Dream me assumed that somehow the game did that.

Alright, this is gonna be tough because I desperately want to say so much for the game's sake and my own, but it's just so much.
At least the playthrough as a whole exists to show a lot of those things, and there's no shame in some of the impacts the game had for myself going unsaid :)
LONG POST INCOMING, NO 'READ MORE' BECAUSE IT'S RELEVANT TO THE POST AND NOT AN AFTER-THOUGHT
CLICK 'J' ON YOUR KEYBOARD TO SKIP. (Sorry mobile users)
8:48 - Do you have any idea how good a step forward it felt to smash the repressing bulb?
9:50 - So I'll get ahead of myself because this fight shows a lot of the visuals that play into this: Something being the manifestation of guilt for Mari is so incredibly visualized.
Between the base 'Something' being extremely close to the shadow she cast and including the one visible eye that bore down on Sunny and Basil after the hanging, to the stairs incorporating into the design.
The seaweed and spider are more general anxieties though they do circle back to Mari since she saved Sunny, but those two forms don't feel as directly related as the stairs (heights) and base 'Something' forms and what they represent for his repressed guilt.
Could be wrong ;) Tell me what you saw in the forms of 'Something' if you'd like to expand on them :)
12:39 - Just to prove the point before you get to fully see the truth- Something morphs into the figure of Mari hanging. It doesn't fully demonstrate the "eye" aspect yet, but still I just wanted to say kudos on the way 'Something' is shown visually. Formless for a reason, and that form becomes more defined as you understand what it is, exceptional damn thing.
15:43 - Basil's part in all of this makes me so damn sad. Plenty to say later (obviously), but he harbors so much guilt, wants forgiveness so much, and is so (not shown yet) desperate to believe in Sunny's innocence while knowing but not comprehending the truth. The fact he harbors his own 'Something' due to the guilt of all this is heartbreaking, these kids endured a hell no one should. Losing someone so important to you and harboring the guilt and fault of it when nothing of the sort was intended. A childish fight with raised emotions got out of hand and all this came of it.
Hell.
16:30 - I absolutely adore how the photo album is used for this reveal.
Absolutely incredible execution that's specific to this story and its characters and makes piecing (literally) this together tense and grim.
22:27 - I NEVER SPOKE TO OR INTERACTED WITH THE THING IN THE CENTER OF THIS ROOM AND I'M A NORMAL AMOUNT OF UPSET ABOUT THAT >:( lol
29:41 - Okay.
So this reveal as a whole is so unbelievably well paced and incredibly hard hitting.
All game long there's a weight of having lost Mari. Repeatedly it's told that she killed herself and no one can understand why and everyone (MYSELF THE PLAYER INCLUDED) is looking for meaning in little moments, seeking out hints that maybe she was suffering or depressed or this or that.
And while that has gone on FOR THE ENTIRE GAME there has also been this uneasy weight surrounding Sunny/Omori. Visions of Mari twisted and deformed into phantoms of horror.
For the most part I assumed it was just him coping with having lost his sister and maybe a dialogue on how when she was alive he was in her shadow (in his mind) and now that she's gone he remains there?
That was the best I could figure, more or less. But it continued to seem more and more malicious in design and MUCH more 'heavy' in how it's presented as a shadow behind Omori/Sunny throughout his adventure and life.
The weight and 'overshadowed' looks of the scenes felt more and more foreboding and less like a simpler "I'm living in her shadow" story, but I couldn't figure out what it was.
Then these pictures come out and piece things together.
The final result:
Sunny and Mari fighting. (Context appears to be his growing disdain towards playing. It's stated he loved playing, but it's also shown that he begins to dislike how much Mari is dragged away for classes and the like up to and including playing. So my read was that Sunny was upset that their fleeting time together was dedicated to the recital and broke his violin in an emotional blur and the fight occurred.
Alternatively it was accidentally broken and both of their emotions were running high as it happened)
Mari falling to her death.
Sunny and Basil carrying her upstairs and tending to her.
Sunny breaking down as it sinks in.
The visions having Basil say "It's going to be okay" by the bedside. (I perceive that as a memory of what Basil was saying as he tried to manage his emotions during the event)
Sunny and Basil carrying her back downstairs and to the backyard.
The makeshift noose.
And finally the sight that burned itself into Sunny's eyes of her hanging after it was all said and done.
Just holy shit to it all in how it's revealed and handled.
Stories have twists all the time, and I ain't gonna make some bold claim like "Most unpredictable!" "Best twist!" "What a twist!" or whatever, though that'd be funny.
I just want to say this twist worked BEFORE the reveal as a foreboding sense of unease and curiosity- it lent itself to intentionally vague and easily misconstrued explanations, basically- instead of it outright misleading you beyond the characters that believe the lie repeating the lie, it allowed you to mislead yourself.
It did the twist the right way! And well! YOU trick YOURSELF! The people repeating the lie are being lied to or have motivation to repeat the lie! The GAME isn't lying (as so many twists handle it) the game is giving the world reason to mislead and allowing you to be mislead!
Now am I yelling affirmations for the way things SHOULD ALWAYS BE! YES! BUT THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S NOT AS NORMAL AS IT SHOULD BE! lol
31:40 - All the "You will really miss them"s hurt :(
33:25 - Right out the gate, a spoiler for what isn't here:
I looked up the alternate endings of the neutral route and my heart hurts to know Sunny doesn't stick around and Basil dies :(
34:00 - BASIL BEING OVERWHELMED WITH DENIAL AND GUILT AS HE ATTEMPTS TO MENTALLY PROTECT HIS VIEW OF WHO HIS FRIEND IS BY INVENTING A SECOND PARTY THAT DID THIS IS SO FUCKING REAL AND AMAZINGLY DONE.
And it explains the name behind the 'Something'.
'Something' behind you did it. There's 'Something' behind you, isn't there.
'Something' all around us, that potentially being the truth comin' in.
When 'Something' ruined my photos, Basil repressing protecting Sunny by destroying the proof.
Just expertly done.
'Something' being repression of the memory and impending guilt. Dannnng.
36:26 - It's 24 hours after I beat the game as I type all this so here's a gag.
Here's the part where Basil beats some sense into his friend, because after this Sunny gets knocked out and wakes up 200% improved and ready to save Basil from his own guilt by releasing them both from the secret.
So basically Kel dragged us out of bed, then a couple days later Basil beats us up, and that's how Sunny gets better :^) Game Over.
38:46 - This fight made me feel utterly terrible, a highlight being the energy bar saying "Everything is going to be okay".
or at 40:17 - when Basil pokes out Sunny's eye and the screen does this? That's an underutilized but always awesome visual.
41:12 - I THOUGHT I WAS DEAD AT THIS POINT :)
Because just before entering Basil's home on this night you see his Grandma's ghost here. So seeing Sunny here told me "WELL. YOU FUCKED UP!"
42:25 - Like I said, beat some sense into Sunny.
Here's the mental side of things where Basil's beatin' told Sunny to go remember the good times and confront his inner self and I'm being partially facetious because there's plenty to say about what's coming up.
43:15 - Goosebumps every time due to the sincerity and hope of this.
43:40 - Hug for anyone needing that.
51:11 - I could cry again and I just might before this post is done being put together.
This accident was never meant to be.
55:09 - Timestamp is arbitrary, I won't go over every flashback but I do want to say what a beautiful way to use these photos. To relive the memories? To find the strength to overcome and all that? After all these years of suppressing memories? DANNNG I love this game.
1:04:09 - I stepped in poop.
1:04:15 - Barefooted.
1:04:22 - I embraced my failure.
1:12:00 - The violin.
1:13:00 - "The anxious feeling-" "They believed in you" "No matter what you didn't want to disappoint them" I'm filled with love and gonna cry about it.
1:14:00 - So an important theme in the game, as if it has just one, is Sunny suppressing emotions and demonizing himself.
Obviously the ending shows him breaking free from both but I think it's important as hell to look at how he builds up to being able to.
After all the dark moments show him as a bloodied monster, demonstrate a perceived lack of remorse for what he's done (as in he sees himself so poorly that he says "I must not have felt bad about it, I'm a monster", not that he actually doesn't feel bad about it, that he thinks he shouldn't because he's bad), have him stab dream Basil to protect his repression of the memory, the build up to breaking free from that is him remembering the good in him through the lens of his friends.
Both in the real world and in revisiting the memories within the photos.
He hears about the good in himself that he has pretended isn't there and finds the power to overcome this deadened shell he's made.
He learns how to forgive himself by finally remembering he's worthy of forgiveness and is more than his mistake, that even the person he grievously harmed would want him to forgive himself and would understand the mistake didn't define him.
1:15:15 - Just because you did something bad doesn't make you bad, to put it more eloquently than my rambles. He had to learn that.
1:19:20 - I've done this fight 4 times.
You may be wondering why 4 times, it ain't like I replayed the game a ton or anything.
The short of it is:
1) For the good ending :)
2) To see what happens if you go "up" in the hospital- it's a dead end- I assumed it'd be a bad ending. So I got the good ending again :)
3) For the bad ending.
4) FOR THE GOOD ENDING TO WIPE THE HORRIBLE FEELING IN THE PIT OF MY STOMACH AWAY FROM THE BAD ENDING :)
In doing so I did get one layer deeper on the BG of Omori in the fight, here it is:
Tumblr media
And I learned on the fourth run that the fight is simpler than I gave it credit lol, Cherish refills your juice, so there is no reason to use Encore. You can get to the end (and deeper more easily) by just using the triple attack and Cherish and Calm down when necessary.
1:29:00 - A summary of the fight is that it's extremely impactful emotionally, but very obviously isn't a "Fun fight". It's great mechanically and story wise for what it's trying to do :)
I'll just say it here: I'm surprised there wasn't an end-game "Omori" fight, you know, in dream world? Because combat is SO good in this. I am lead to believe that the Omori route where you never go outside in the real world has more bosses and zones and would fill what I just implied I wanted- but you're also railroaded into the Neutral endings which are both sad :(
And honestly? That makes sense and I applaud the decision :) Embracing the fantasy world for more 'fights' isn't exactly the path to recovery. Also and I know someone will be bothered I say this because *I'm* bothered I'm saying this- it makes sense since a big predecessor did the same thing lol.
Undertale Genocide has new bosses and a harder end game challenge (Sans) while being the worse ending, while the good ending has a flashy and story/emotionally impactful final fight that isn't as challenging because challenge isn't the point of the morals being explored.
I just bring it up because it's interesting, has a parallel, and after fighting Omori 4 times I really REALLY wanted to do an end-game fight in Dream World.
1:30:00 - forgive me as I cry again. goosebumps and more.
OH NO~!
DRAT!
So I use a cheap video editor and I use the free format of it which limits to 720p and I didn't think twice of it.
I recorded at max, but downgraded after editing.
At 720p you can't see the detail that made me break down crying!
At 1:31:55 Sunny's eyes go wider as he sees Mari as they finally get to experience the duet in this dream state (White Egret Orchid, this is real and happening, I'm taking this to my grave :'( ) he sees her smile and that smile made me break down, but in the 720 it's blurry :(
That's on me, I could have posted the scene raw in HQ but I didn't know it'd compress just enough to be invisible :(
still. that duet scene can make me cry on command. just because of that alone, but also the entire thing.
1:33:42 - Sunny breaks from his shell and feels his emotions again.
1:37:07 - I wish every game would end with a mirror to see yourself.
The 'Despite everything, it's still you' vibe just cements all the growth and experiences that have happened as so much more real when that happens. Bonus points because mirrors in Omori are a time bomb where you can be reminded of the guilt following you- and this one is safe. This one is pure and clean. You did it.
1:37:50 - As I said earlier, going up does nothing. Dead end.
1:39:00 - I have to tell you something.
Simple ending. And yet slams me like two trucks. I'm so proud.
1:41:00 - Post credits scene.
This is so heartwarming and their smiles are the purest thing in the entire world.
1:42:50 - BAD ENDING RECORDING.
All I'll say on that is the bad ending made me feel terrible inside. Give up, live in your bubble, and subconsciously end it all so you never have to confront reality again.
My gut felt heavy to be honest.
And the fact that THAT is when Bo En Time is played is INCREDIBLE.
Having the sky shift like that gave goosebumps and cemented my dread.
Just seeing it now has me feeling very poorly.
Okay. Video done.
Now for general thoughts.
First off this White Space cycle has been going on for YEARS with Sunny only getting worse as he suppresses things more and more and the reason he found the strength to overcome is because of his friends and I'm gonna yell about it.
THE REASON SUNNY IS BREAKING FREE CAN BE DIRECTLY POINTED AT KEL THINKING "FUCK IT, I'M ABOUT TO LOSE A FRIEND, AND I DON'T WANT TO"
And I just think that is sweet as hell. The strength was inside himself, but the problem itself caused Sunny to demonize and not trust himself- he needed someone to break him free and help convince him that he's not irredeemable. And boom.
The way this game handles Denial and even gives it physical form with the 'Something's that both Sunny and Basil harbor is just awesome.
I touched on it but combat in Omori is very, very good.
I've said it here and there as I played and I feel like going at length in the finale post is pointless because this isn't a review but to put it concisely.
Types changing mid-combat, the character archetypes being so well defined, the follow up system, combat in Omori is some top notch turn based RPG stuff.
Like up there with the greats, the timeless masterpieces. This is GOOD fighting. So it was surprising the good ending didn't emphasize it- I explained why that makes sense, but even still! It'd probably be lesser for it (as explained previously) but it's interesting they practiced that restraint for the message they wanted to send.
Repeatin' that Mari's smile in the recital made me cry. Burned in my brain.
I'm still surprised I got the post credits scene because I DID water the plants a lot but when the game showed me them all dead I assumed that was the fail condition.
I genuinely do want to try the Omori route some time down the road. I hope I get around to it.
I am slightly dissuaded just because the Omori route only gets the neutral endings which are not Good To Be Blunt :(
But I want to see what dream content there is and I hear there are other bosses!
Other small bits from my notes:
Replacing denial (the black bulb) with hope (the white bulb) was good as heck.
The imagery of the 'Something' is so top notch- using the shadow of her body combined with the piercing gaze of her single eye- MY GOD.
The fragility of life being so present- between memories of near death experiences, to the way in which Mari dies, to the ease at which either Basil or Sunny can end the game. It's tense and heart-wrenching.
The way the 'Something' behind Sunny almost always shadows over him like an ever present weight.
Tearful, hopeful, pure, kids enduring a guilt metric tons heavier than their bodies could ever handle and finally, finally moving beyond it.
I said more in a personal post, and I'll reblog that.
Honestly, just timestamping through the video took it out of me and got the point across.
Omori is a wonderful game.
It's definitely a favorite for me, high up there on my list.
Between the themes, the gameplay, the humor, the ending.
This is a good one.
And now I get to end having experienced all the care and love in this title, that's such a sweet thing.
Now I know this finale post is a mess, illegible even. I have gotten sloppier as I've begun embracing just 'experiencing and rambling' and perhaps my formatting with change yet again until I find something more easily shared.
Despite that. I want to thank any who popped in on this playthrough.
This was a good one, a highlight of the blog for sure- and I'm always happy when I see some people enjoying the absolute mess I toss online when I do one of these :P
So thank you for your time, and thank you to any ridiculous enough to read my nonsense here.
Have a good one :)
And just as expected I feel I've said nothing and barely touched the surface as the post-game-head of mine does a poor job lol. Even still :P

Omg I just read your fandom list! How have you played in the dragon age series - races, classes, personalities, romances? Which are your favorites or that you replay often? I just finished inquisition (late to the party, I know lolol), and I had so much fun!!
Ngl I've been wanting to replay Dragon Age a lot lately but I have no idea which one to play. I mean, you'd think Origins would be a no brainer cause it's first but it's also a bit of a drag to get through (stupid fade). DA2, I love the characters but I have to do everything in that game or I lose my sanity. I might just replay Inquisition tho cause I haven't played it as much as the other games.
I’m glad that you enjoyed Inquisition tho! It’s always fun to see newpeople hopping on the Dragon Age train!
.
Fair warning, this is going to be a long post so I have the Read More because of that (I will gladly write essays about Dragon Age because it’s so good)
Okay so I have played through all the games multiple times but I've only completed each game about 2-3 times. I'm the type of person that will begin a playthrough, get distracted by something else, and restart the game instead of continuing where I last left off xD
I am very partial to playing the Rogue characters (specifically Archers) because having that lockpicking skill is so nice considering I don't want to specifically put my companions skill points into lockpicking. But I have really enjoyed playing as a Mage the last few times I did.
Personalities, I always play the Sarcastic/Flirty characters just because I enjoy the humor so much and also attempting to make my favorite characters flustered. I wish I was half as confident with my flirting as my characters are too.
I also almost always play a female character because that's what I'm used to (also most of the characters that I enjoy romancing, I can romance with a female character). I have played a male character in Inquisition though just because I wanted to have a twink for Iron Bull and Dorian. It's what those two deserve.
For Origins, I've done all of the race/class combos just cause I wanted to watch the different intros. I've completed the game as a Rogue/Archer Dalish Elf, Rogue Human Noble, and Elf Mage though. I've played through many times though, just have only completed the game with those specific characters.
For DA2, I've completed the game as a Mage and Rogue (going both melee Rogue and Archer). I think I've completed DA2 only twice (the mage and melee rogue) but I've played the game several times.
Inquisition, I've played Elf Archer Rogue, Qunari Mage, and a male elf mage (my twink for Iron Bull). But I've only completed the Elf Rogue playthrough (keep getting distracted by other stuff to finish my mages >.<).
I have romanced Alistair, Zevran, and Leliana in Origins. DA2 had been Fenris, Anders, and Merrill. And Inquisition I romanced Cullen, Sera (my Qunari mage), Iron Bull (the elf mage), and Dorian (elf mage, different playthrough). I really wish I could actually romance Harding or Krem. I love those two so freaking much.
As for my favorites, I absolutely adore the Dalish Elf Rogue (romanced Zevran and Alistair, different playthroughs) that I had in Origins just because I love that intro so much. Also the tie in to Merrill hits good considering she's a babe.
I also love my Mage Hawke (romanced Fenris, cause I love the broody elf).
Then ofc I love romancing Cullen in Inquisition just cause I've been trying to romance his ass through all the games and was finally able to (Bioware is a coward for not letting him be with a Qunari tho).

Howdy. I am the friend of the lady who asked about Team Miror B. headcanons. I wanted to say that I think you're very detailed and articulate, I loved them. I wanted to ask kind of the same thing, how you view their relationship with Michael, since there really wasn't much interaction with Wes. You can ignore if you'd like, but I just wanted to say hello and it's good to know that Orre hasn't died out.
Ah all in a day’s work ^^
Usually I take 7 hours more-or-less to formulate a good response for a good topic, so this may take a moment and a lot of text. I may take a day of pondering and reviewing everything I know and reanalyzing if I must.
Let us begin.
In the beginning at their first encounter with each other, Team Miror B. thought little of Michael as nothing more than a wandering child who happened to be a trainer. Miror B. offered Michael to join his posse, but of course the illusion of choice is used here in that no matter what you choose you’ll still end up being enemies because Miror B. can apparently sense Michael’s insincerity upon saying “Yes”.
Hence forth, Miror B. and his team have tried to continue their endeavors but are always met with Michael interfering because of Trudly and Folly’s mistake of dropping the Miror B. Radar on that first encounter in the Cave Pokespot, prompting Miror B. to wonder how Michael keeps following him.
At one point in-game, Miror B. guessed that the kid was actually a big fan trying to get his autograph. Beyond that, I can’t remember if he offered a Yes/No prompt or outright said that he wouldn’t give it unless Michael beat him in battle. Regardless, Michael never did get that autograph unfortunately. I don’t have a screenshot of this event either I’m afraid... but that is why you shouldn’t be afraid to fail a Shadow Pokemon snag in the story against non-rematchable trainers. Save some for Miror B. in your next playthrough if you want to see him more than four times.
It is clear that Miror B. and his posse’s relationship with Michael was that whatever they did, he was the pest who’d ruin their fun by taking away any Shadow Pokemon they’d manage to keep for a given amount of time. If they were lucky, Michael would fail to snag a Shadow Pokemon or win in whatever Colosseum challenge Miror B. was taking, granting them more time with their small victory of obtaining the Shadow Pokemon. The possibility of things going their way is not impossible, but in the end it was inevitable for Team Miror B. to see Michael as the one kid ruining their fun. They must have had some ill-will toward him down to the end of their rivalry at Gateon Port.
But Trudly and Folly are not the ones that bore the majority of the ill-will toward Michael the most. Miror B. was very annoyed with the kid and remembers him throughout their future encounters, but when the last Shadow Pokemon he knew was snagged from him, they retreated to the Krabby Club with a new mission that Trudly and Folly could still follow, which was nothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I suspect Shadow Dragonite’s snag was more of a wake-up-call for Miror B., who was living in his maniacal delusions over his dream. Owning all the Pokemon in the world is an impossible dream. His confidence even in failure remained true however. As he realized the last Shadow Pokemon was snagged from him, he found he had been working towards nothing this entire time. Yet he does his little victory dance and pose before announcing the immediate plan to escape.
When he did however, he took the elevator down, leaving Trudly, Folly, and four Ludicolo’s behind to their shock. They had to take the stairs down to continue following their leader. But even in failure they continued to support Miror B. as a new performer at the Krabby Club
Tumblr media
Now I cannot say what really happened to Miror B. and his posse, since in-game their story ends at the Krabby Club.
But I like to think that Michael’s involvement snapped Miror B. out of a life-long mania in the same way he snapped Greevil out too.
Tumblr media
If what it took to bring down these bosses was a child who’s pure heart destroyed everything they’ve achieved, even repeatedly, to see the error in their maniacal dreams of ruling the world one way or another, then I see them and their followers, including Eldes for Greevil, potentially grateful toward Michael and his efforts of stopping a runaway train from running any further.
Thinking back to Trudly and Folly’s in-game details on how they occasionally rely on eating Poke Snacks off of Pokespots and how Folly has been concerned over their nomadic life-style of following Miror B. all over the Orre Region for his unobtainable dream, I think they would be glad to have the Krabby Club harbor them, provide them with jobs and feed them actually decent food. Miror B. would also be thankful for the new domain to live in and possibly a new dream to get into. A dream to become a star instead.
Tumblr media
Miror B. on stage in-game is too busy singing to acknowledge Michael verbally anymore, even if he turns to him upon examination. But at least he seems passionate about dancing on stage to music. But in time, if his popularity with the club has grown so much that he’s become a star, maybe he’d notice him again one day as someone to remember as a rival, an old friend, or maybe not remember him at all if his new overconfidence and ego buries his past memories. Memories of when he was nothing more than a tall, walking, poke-ball patterned tumbleweed in the desert chasing the glory that left him long ago.
But all in all it’s just speculation on my part. Team Miror B. is last seen in a state of denial in response to Shadow Dragonite’s Snag and the bosses’s defeat, but that could just be a short-term problem before realizing the Krabby Club is the place where everybody will know their name.
Tumblr media
But as we know, Miror B. seems content now. So who knows? Maybe some day, Michael will get that autograph Miror B. owed him.
That is my answer to how I view Team Miror B’s relationship with Michael. Begrudging at first, but surrendering in the end of a journey that’s sprawled out of control when they clung to Miror B’s deluded dream for too long. And now they are at a neutral stance with each other; with Trudly and Folly potentially having better lives now at the Krabby Club with their boss. Maybe they won’t see Michael as the pest he was anymore but as another customer for the diner to entertain with music and dance. Likewise, Michael would see them as friends just as he does the rest of the former Cipher Admins and Gonzap.
Thanks for the hello! I will always strive to keep Orre’s memory alive. ^^

I did it :)
So, I cried. That's a given.
Also this might be the most overwhelmingly happy ending in the series so far, you know, if you're used to every entry ending with "KIRYU DIE?????"
Bonus points because this ending DID NOT immediately reveal that he lives! I know my intro here is all unserious and the like but genuinely, that does a lot for making the scene so much more impactful and it worked here even though I know he returns for Y6.
So, I'm gonna do this post like the last big post because there's too many thoughts to expel.
Timestamps as I rewatch so I can share my thoughts. Then a short conclusion because honestly? This game has taken all my words multiple times.
I just want to calmly and happily say my final piece at the end :)
0:39 - Spoiler, this ending SUCKS because it doesn't include a final rhythm battle for Haruka! Now I think I read somewhere that there's a member of that assassin clan she can dance battle as a final challenge but I clearly didn't do that right and missed out and that's beside the point- THERE'S NO RHYTHM GAMEPLAY IN THIS FINALE >:(
9:00 - I EARNED IT, I'M USING IT!
13:00 - Spoiler for later, Shinada doesn't get to say this from what I recall. Instead Baba gets a different wake up call, but that works out :)
17:00 - Not now, but this will come up, I offer to you my johns for what happens in the first boss fight. My eyes were dry as hell so I missed some QTEs which means I didn't get the flashiest stuff to happen. This actually happened at the end of Y4 also but I restarted just to capture good footage- not this time.
17:30 - MOUSE. MOUSE MOUSE, A LITTLE RAT, MOUSE. Love to see it.
19:00 - The audible sigh I let out when they played the same song I've heard like 40 times in my playthrough was palpable. I do dig the song! But there are what? 4 Idol songs? They really needed more or to not saturate their use so much :(
19:40 - I legitimately gasped and went "Oh no... of course it's you!" at Baba's role in this. It added a lot of weight to the way he practically begged Haruka not to show up.
20:50 - So here's the gist. Majima's plan didn't work out, we know that. Majima has a REALLY good line and motivator moment where he says he's following orders now to protect Haruka because she means more to Kiryu than anything (and that's how Majima rolls), Majima then reveals some shit which can be amounted to "I think you've gotten weak and wanted to protect you!!!!" which does ring slightly hollow since we saw Majima at a ridiculously low point earlier. So either his low point was him contemplating Saejima's survival chances, or his low point was sincere (it sure sounded it) and his worry over Saejima being weak was just also happening at the same time. I don't really mind either way to be honest, we beat him up. I fail some QTEs.
33:00 - Baba deciding not to fulfill his orders on his own accord is actually extremely important and good as hell. It shows that all this changed him and gave him the motivation to forge his own path- or rather it began to though he's overwhelmed with doubt. It's extremely good.
33:50 - The fact he intentionally leaves evidence shows how much doubt he has though, he's giving up entirely more than forging his own path, he's just refusing to follow the orders of another but hasn't found the strength to continue on his own. It's really good is all.
38:00 - This was the first cry I had beating the game x.x Shinada is just a phenomenally likeable character, and watching him accept where his life has gone and what it's meant to others is way more touching than I'd assume considering it's a tale of a baseball star.
40:50 - THIS WAS HYPE AS HELL AND LEAD TO MY SECOND CRY. THIS PRISON FAMILY HAS NO RIGHT BEING THIS ENDEARING. Also, more or less, they get to deliver the message Shinada was supposed to lol.
42:50 - THIRD AND BIG AS HELL CRY. SHINADA YOU FOOL, YOU'VE A FOUND FAMILY AFTER-ALL!!! I genuinely adore this moment so much is all. It's such a wonderful payoff for this loveable fool. After all the runnin' away he has a home.
43:36 - I love Shinada so much the silly fuck.
46:00 - I got a laugh out of Akiyama KICKING ASS in the news footage (didn't mention but the first brawl cutscene was rather lacking wasn't it?) and Kiryu just like... punches a guy. It's hilarious to me. Also you best believe- I UNLOCKED IT, I'M USING IT!!!
48:00 - Now this is a, well, it's a bad reveal. Like look, there is a metric ton of good going on in this finale- but the reveal that Aizawa is his son and is evil and is the final boss is just too much zero-build-up-payoff. It's the worst part. It's not like extremely detrimental or anything- like it doesn't take away from the good stuff- but it's just entirely uninteresting and bad. It makes Aizawa's interest in Morinaga bizarre and uninteresting since he got no payoff, he had buildup with Saejima and then in the final scenes he's just like "Yeah, Mori was nice but who gives a fuck I am the one who killed him (I think he said) and I aspire to be strong as fuck because all of YOU IDIOTS have FRIENDS and CHARISMA >:(" and like, who fuckin' cares bud.
52:00 - Now I'll more or less sum up all of Akiyama's payoff here. 1- I unlocked it so I'm gonna use it! 2- He offhandedly says he wants to be a legend in this town, which in Y4 he already was- he was a myth, a city mystery- but of course he means like Kiryu not the loch ness monster. 3- He gets to be a legend by being the only civilian (or person in general) the Omi would bow to. It's kind of not built up at all and is a bit lame, but to be honest Akiyama has a pretty bit part in this entire game. He's kinda just a convenient returning character with motivation to assist Kiryu and a career that allows motivation to get involved through Park. To be blunt, his part in the story is weak. I wish it was stronger. But it's inoffensive and he at least gets something- as minor as it is. Getting to say he's king of the world is something, you know?
56:00 - I will say that the build up of "Oh shit, these are Kanai's men!" and the reveal that "Oh shit! They are WATASE'S men and all the clans who the Tojo were seeking alliances with!" is a good one. Watase is a fine enough character which I bring up only because I was told he was a standout- but he wasn't for me. His scenes are great, his growth with Katsuya is nice, but he's barely in the game and really only exists to be betrayed and then to be like "I'm one of the good yakuza despite being a war-lusting one because being a good yakuza is just complicated enough to allow this overlap" which is interesting for sure, but I don't know. Unless he does stuff in the subsequent games I didn't catch much in this one. Maybe he does- I assume he runs the Omi now!
1:00:00 - I kinda summed it up but yeah. Here's the final boss, Aizawa, a character we were mislead on and who's motivation is empty as fuck. It's, whatever. It's not the good part of the ending. The good part is everything prior and directly after. Like his entire deal is anti-silver-spoon talking points but also he includes being charismatic or capable as silver spoon-isms??? He pretty much just wants to be leader because he's strong. He'd arguably be more interesting if he just said it that way.
1:11:00 - The lyrics to Dream are anything but subtle and I love them and I love Haruka. Sliding this in here- Majima gets no payoff >:( Park's dream is accomplished in seeing her star on the stage, but no Majima moment? No sight of him accepting her loss? Lame.
1:14:00 - I genuinely LOVE that Aizawa focuses in on Kiryu's gunshot wound. He still accepts it as a fair fight because Kiryu presents it as one, but even then he pays mind to it as you'd expect someone wanting to fight at their strongest would- he wants to fight Kiryu at his best and he's accepting this because Kiryu presents as his best even when wounded- it's pretty cool. Fight happens. It's fine stuff, flashy and fun. Still maybe the weakest final boss yet because he has no build up. I'd be the first to admit without looking it up I can't list every final boss thus far, but like, Nishi was built up, Mine was built up, Goda was built up, I just, in this moment, don't recall having a big "WHO THE FUCK, THIS MEANS NOTHING?" fight in yakuza and this is certainly one of those.
1:25:00 - I cried AGAIN. Haruka just hit me with a truck of emotion here is all.
1:41:15 - This is a beautifully shot, emotional, and tragic looking ending. Heck, at 1:43:00 I initially thought he was being awoken in a hospital bed and I was like "Heh, there's the old Kiryu dies fakeout!" but no! They hammer home, they go for broke, they give a TRAGIC AS FUCK bitter ending on top of an ending that's like 99% happy as fuck in terms of offering everyone involved hope for the future. This was a good end :)
So then, some overall thoughts I maybe didn't get out- I mean there's no way this post touches everything but I want to at least try to because I like sharin' the experience and what I got out of it.
The fighting styles were mighty uneven as far as strengths or fun factor. To be blunt,
Kiryu has an overpowered counter attack and heat mode and since heat mode is underwhelming as hell that means he has JUST a counter attack- his strikes don't really hit all that well considering the improvements other characters saw this time around, so he's a bit one note here.
Saejima feel even meatier than before, nothing particularly 'stands out' but the fact that he has super armor as long as he has heat is a pretty big factor in making him feel good to use.
Akiyama got the short end of the straw this time around. His new gimmick is the launch combos and they are... well... less than shit at least from what I could feel during gameplay. They don't hurt much, they burn heat like crazy, and they can MISS, all while being a move that targets just one enemy- has no counter to blocking or armor- and provides no armor in turn.
Despite not losing anything, he kinda got screwed.
(I'm lead to believe Akiyama is invulnerable during his aerial combos which my blurb in my finale post complained felt worthless and cited that as a reason.
If so then I was wrong but I still hold all my other complaints towards it, just not the 'it has no armor or invuln' bit assuming that's true.)
Shinada wins out for being unique and being a weapon oriented character that actually does well with weapons. Weapons have always been something I pretty much ignore in Yakuza and the series itself has always desperately tried to make them interesting with things like weapon skills, Kamiya works, and the like. But other than the god weapons like the golden gun weapons just never felt good to manage.
Using them, sure, that's fine, but managing them? Durability and skills and limited movesets and all that? Nah. But Shinada really does a lot to make them less shit! His innate abilities that raise durability a metric ton REALLY make weapons feel better to use with him- and his unique movesets with weapons are pretty damn good (mostly. The pipe/'normal one hander pole size object' moveset is worthless as heck, it regularly misses).
He's fun.
===
Revelations were a miss this time around for me. Since you couldn't have seen them if you tried on my blog let it be known- I ONLY got the quest related revelations for each character- which is to say- ONE rev per character.
Revelations in 5 are weapon based, and not just 'bat or pole or gun' or whatever- they are DISPOSABLE TEMPORARY weapon based.
What you are supposed to do is go to the specific place on the map where that one revelation weapon spawns, hope like hell you find an enemy, and wail on them like crazy. If you use a weapon x amount of times then you'll get a revelation according to the internet. This is beyond ridiculous and means a normal playthrough will get none of these, while a focused one will be bored out of their mind GRINDING to get these.
I did not bother.
===
Now.
Yakuza 5.
This might be my favorite Yakuza overall.
I still think 0 is probably the best overall for most people, it has the best style, it has from what I've experienced the best gameplay, it's story is tear jerking and exciting and fun.
But as a yakuza game overall, I really have to give it to 5 personally. Because 0 tried to work within its bounds- it made itself a great entry point to the series or a great addition to Yakuza 1 / Kiwami as background.
But 5 is building on 4 previous games and it does so fucking phenomenally.
There's something to be said about a later entry in a series gaining extra payoff thanks to multiple entries of build up and character depth and 5 fucking does it.
I just. It explores the motivation of some fan-favorites so well, it expands characters so fucking well, I know I've harped on about it but just Saejima- man! Saejima goes from a run of the mill "Decent" character to a fully fledged and explored entity! And I LOVE him!
And no he's not the only shining spot, like hell he is, but he's such a posterchild for what 5 does right in my eyes- take something that's already good and breath some life into it. Also I adore it's laser focus on a singular theme and all the ways it wanted to explore it.
Like. I think Kiwami and Zero take the cake for the most fun I've had " 'playing' Yakuza so far, but 5 takes the cake for the most fun I've had 'in general' like gameplay and me just thinking about it because there's so much to think on.
More time will tell as I compartmentalize my thoughts and perhaps forget some details as one does, but right this moment- this might be my favorite Yakuza game.
I love it.
Also, woot! I beat Y5 before Monhun Rise came out :D Now I can start that game without putting a story on hold!
...
Except I also told my sister that I'd start Omori after Y5. So I guess alongside monhun I'll be playing through a game with a hefty and wonderfully done story. Which is what I didn't want to do with Y5.
I just can't win, lol.
