#you: what do you think of manga takane
yuukei-yikes · 2 years
Note
A lot of people seem to not like the manga as a starting point but its what hooked me. I saw will stetsons lost time memory and I was like "what???" "thats it???" and found the rest with my brother at like 2am. the mangas slow fun pace that is instantly cut off by horror is fun, the flashbacks are great characterization.... the only part i didn't like was the dissonance between Harutaka in mangaroute1 and mangaroute2.
it was a bit confusing. anyway do you prefer the anime or manga's version of takane as she seems to be your favorite character. (for me its gotta be the manga, the anime just did not do it)
the manga is what hooked me too! back in january 2014, there was tiny vinnie binging all the songs and what was available of the manga at the time in just one day...
i think the reason ppl dont recommend the manga as a starting point is the second manga route. personally, i recommend the manga as a starting point but only until volume 4 after the route we start with is over. and then i'd come back to second manga route when im done with everything else!! my kagepro recommendation is 1. songs 2. manga until everyone dies lol 3. novels 4. finish the manga 5. anime.
the thing with the manga is that it doesnt rly go into what the normal route is for very long. we keep saying second manga route but its like, idk MOST of the manga is that route.
i do like the manga for the same reasons as u, but sometimes im a little eh bc of mahiro sato's obvious knkd shipping and stuff lol. and i did write a whole bigass answer abt why i hate what happens to takane's character in haruka's arc in the second route. otherwise i dont mind the difference all that much. and i love her as ene in the rest of it. its just a few things that drive me crazy ok ill just link the post lol sorry i just have. um. strong feelings.
OK UR ACTUAL QUESTION hmmmmm well yea i'd say the manga or novels. i get what u say abt the anime but truly the anime did not do it for any of them LOLL there was barely any time for anything let alone good characterisation. like come on there's 11 main characters and 12 twenty four minute long episodes. wdym u dont like anime takane she was there for like (checks) 40 or 50 min in total?
takane is incredibly sidelined in the anime much like everyone else cuz. lol. AGAIN. kagepro is not somehting u can fit in a 12 ep long anime. yuukei yesterday in the manga and novels goes a lot more in depth about takanes personality and relationship to haruka. not to mention they put kano's little Disguising Myself As Someone Dear To You That You Have Regrets About on her instead of shintaro which was crazy. to me that did so much damage to kano's character. i wouldnt call myself a kano expert bc he's an insanely complicated character to tackle LMAO but... i dont know. i just dont think he would do that to ene. shintaro is one thing, we all know kano's little thing abt shintaro, but ene?? its like, he does that to her BECAUSE of the thing with shintaro. kano's pissed and frustrated at everyone moving on while he's stuck behind and ESPECIALLY at shintaro and takes it out on ene for being the main reason why shintaro is moving on. its a little unfair. i dont think kano would be THAT disconnected to do that. not to mention when he pulls that trick on shintaro he isnt half as harsh as he is on ene!! he just kinda spooks him (tho ofc thats enough to send shintaro spiraling LOL) while to ene he's like YOURE THE WORST FUCK YOU and then the way ene kinda laughs it off after also pisses me off LOL yeah kano could do this im not saying its COMPLETELY ooc but he would be in an incredibly despaired rock bottom moment and he'd be super apologetic about it later. post str kano and takane friendship *holds head*
and if you read the novels and kano's feelings and thoughts over takane it makes me sad that's what they chose to do in the anime bc in the novels kano regards takane as someone he's jealous of bc of how confident she is and "her ability to doubt people" and how he thinks they're similar ppl. like we rly dont give enough credit that TAKANE is the first person kano ever opens up to in his life. he even says the conversation they have might as well be the first conversation he's ever had with anyone, and they both head out to the hideout being the ones who have to admit something to the people dear to them (kano the whole clearing eyes thing to kido, takane the ene thing to shintaro) and its not for no reason!!! kano sees something in takane. he knows theyre similar, but at the same time he is jealous. that together sounds a little like he wishes he could be more like her. OUGH. and how they just chose to translate that whole thing into kano being awful to ene and berating her for trying to save shintaro is soooo fucked up. it bothers me so much. #notmykano
WHY AM I TALKING ABT KANO THIS IS ABOUT TAKANE. OK i was driving my point abt how the anime isnt a good judging point to any of the characters LMAO and i guess i wouldnt be able to tell u which "version" of takane i like best, or anyone for that matter. to me all medias are the same version of the same character. im in too deep all of them. the takane that almost kills kenjirou for outing her as lightning dancer ene is the same takane who admits it by herself. idk. guess its a good question but i dont have a good answer. thats also why i hate second manga route takane bc she does shit i dont think she'd do and it pisses me off LOL

BONUS! MOD'S CHOICE POLL!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mod's Propaganda Under the Cut:
Judai:
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a Yu-Gi-Oh fan. For whatever reason, this series imprinted on me when I was a child and I just never let it go. I've watched the original series, season 0, GX, 5Ds, and Arc V, as well as read the original manga, the GX manga, and the Arc V manga, as well as watched all the movies. The point is: I like Yu-Gi-Oh. There are people who like it more than me, that have watched all the series and what not, but I think I still like it an absurd amount. And out of all the protagonists I know, Judai is my favorite. He's just so lovable, you can't help but like him! He's goofy, he's reliable, he's fun, he has a descent into madness, he's gay, what more could you want in a shounen protagonist? Though being sleepy isn't a major part of him, it's more of a gag of him slacking in class and always going to sleep, it's still super funny and I'm a little sad that he lost in Round 1, though I do like Sonic as well (who he lost to). Give the Slifer Slacker a chance!
Linhardt:
Considering Linhardt is my profile picture at the moment, I don't think I need to justify this too much. But I will anyway. Linhardt is the sleepy crest scholar. Although I will be the first to admit that I am not actually a Fire Emblem fan (and tbh I find the writing in Three Houses kind of bad) (sorry to those who enjoy it) I love Linhardt so much anyway. He's probably my favorite in that very large cost. I love that he's so unapologetically sleepy, like he doesn't care if you scold him to do work, he will do work on his own time. Not only that, but he's actually really smart and dedicated when he wants to be. Linny's friendship with Caspar is really nice, especially since I think someone needs to save Caspar from his awful dad & self-destructive tendencies. Plus, I really like his supports. Especially with Marianne, Hubert, and Edelgard. His supports with Dorothea in Three Hopes is also really nice.
Garfield:
It's Garfield. He's a classic comic. He's a classic meme. Little orange kitty. What more could you possibly want? I love Snoopy, but to be perfectly honest I think Garfield should have gotten as far as Snoopy.
Sleepytime Tea Bear:
Again. He's just a classic. What more would you want but a sleepy bear in pajamas on a chair?
Olruggio:
I'm a big Witch Hat Atelier fan and I love Olruggio. Like yes, I like Orufrey like everyone else, but I also just like Olruggio on his own. I like his scruffy little look and I love the fact that at first he is so intimating but almost immediately he's revealed to be a big softie. I love his light magic motif and I really think it's sweet that he made the thing to keep you warm when you sleep and gave it to the kids-- he's a FATHER. This man needs a nap fr though. Man I need to catch up with this manga.
Osaka:
IT'S OSAKA. Like!!! I don't even know how many clips and comics from Azumanga Daioh make the rounds around Tumblr, but specifically the ones about Osaka are amazing!!! She has the most autistic anime girl swag I love her so much. She's so sweet and earnest and silly... I always lose my mind at "OH MAH GOD!" and she has so many other classics. Like when she makes the Osaka stamp with her eraser or when she struggles to cross the street because she keeps zoning out when the light gets green or when she's distressed about Americans wearing shoes inside... I love her. And to her sleepyheadness, she's always falling asleep in class and whenever she's studying she just starts falling asleep. She's just like me fr...
Takane:
Back in the day I really liked Kagerou Project and so as tribute to my old obsession from middle/high school I have to give a spot to Takane. My favorite part of the series was when we saw flashbacks to the Yuukei quartet and Headphone Actor is still a bop.
Tanaka:
THE REASON WHY I STARTED THIS TOURNAMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE??? Last December during finals I decided to read something light and fun while working and I chose Tanaka-kun is Always Listless because I remember the title from a few years ago when the anime came out and like I loved it SOOOOOO much. He's the ultimate sleepyboy and he's just so funny and relatable. He needs to be carried around by his best friend Ohta and his ultimate goal in life is to minimize as much effort as possible and he's always nodding off and he dislikes being a main character, instead wishing he was a background character... my favorite guy for real.

List of "Does it Like Women" Results and whether I agree
I find the "Does it like women" blog fascinating, as y'all have probably noticed. I always tend to think deeply about this topic when I consume media, so I wanted to make a list of results I disagree with, because it interests me! I'll likely be updating this through reblogs if my interest doesn't wane, I'll make a note in the replies when I do!
Loves Women
I agree with all of these so far!
Likes Women
Kill la Kill- Man it's 2013 again and I'm seeing tumblr make powerpoints about how klk is deeply feminist and it's actually a super deep critique of harassment that Ryuko has to wear the ugliest outfit ever and Westerners Don't Understand (person making this argument is inevitably a Westerner).
Yeah, based on the part I've seen and everything I've heard, hard disagree. But I have not seen the whole thing, just those three, I do know the part I saw included rape jokes a plenty, a weird victim-blamey take on "not being ashamed" of being forced into a skimpy outfit and how if you're bothered by men ogling you that's your weakness, and a vagina wedgie. I'm not as mad about it as I was back then, and I can appreciate the show has it's good points later on. Not having watched it also means my knowledge is incomplete. However, I have listened to really in depth breakdowns of the series (mainly Anifem's podcast), so I know exactly what happens, and yeah, the treatment of women doesn't impress me. I'm on the dislike side, (holding back on hates because again, haven't seen all of it)
...could understand mixed feelings though, I guess
Madoka- I'd definitely go more towards mixed feelings honestly (especially if we're counting Rebellion) but I get the people who say "likes".
Yuri is my Job- it loves women, it loves messy women, it loves women who love women, it loves them so much, idk why it got a sizeable no vote. People who only watched the first ep? People who think yuri is "bad"?
Mob Psycho 100- Someone in the notes says "accidentally likes women" and that's the only answer in the "likes women" area I'll accept. It has 10 million prominent male characters and like three prominent female characters. ONE really really obviously has a hard time imagining women as powerful or action heroes. (this is reflected in One Punch Man too) (One Punch Man actively hates women and queer people though, Mob is infinitely better) Only one who ever gets to fight and play with the boys, and she's a low level mook, and we have to spend 75% percent of her limited screentime on whether it's actually okay to fight women, with her winning argument being "Well you're literally a child so I guess it evens out" (???) The little girl with the evil dolls gets even less screentime.
I do like that the series examines how Mob idealized Takane and how people not caring about the real her made her tired, as well as how it allowed her to reject Mob and was basically a lesson in the importance of accepting rejection. But her screentime is also really limited, and I feel like we could have dove into her a lot more. Tome is a wonderful weird girl and I liked her little arc, and I hear she gets more in the Reigen manga, but still not a TON of screentime, and even with her there are a couple jabs about how she doesn't "count" as a girl due to not acting traditionally feminine we're clearly supposed to find funny. Emi is...there I guess. There's that sweet scene with the writer girl, and the bully girl, but they're like, not reoccurring at all, as evidenced by how I can't remember their names.
And uh. the girls school episode.
Anyway. Hot take but I don't think "they're barely in the story but when they are two of them are treated pretty decently and have some depth, though there is some weird stuff about whether women can even fight men or whatever" really counts as "likes women". I'd go more mixed feelings.
Life is Strange-out of the two options I chose dislikes, but my feelings are a lot closer to "mixed feelings". I go into why here.
Gushing Over Magical Girls- lol. lmao even. The anime about middle school girls who look 8 sexually assaulting other middle school girls DEFINITELY doesn't like women. I go into more detail here.
Cowboy Bebop: Mixed feelings, probably. I chose dislikes because yes, Faye and Ed are great (you could def read Ed as nb though), but Faye also is repeatedly damsel in distress'd and treated as incompetent in her field when I don't think she should be, she can be a failgirl without being the sole woman in the action side of the group and also the least capable (there's also That Scene in the movie). also i just. it's fine that she's sexy but I hate her outfit. give her something nicer looking, it's so ugly. But my main reason for a dislike vote is the treatment of Julia. Girl is a textbook example of fridging. They really gave her so little. But yeah I could see mixed feelings.
Also do you remember that one scene during Faye's tragic backstory where she's hospitalized and the camera requires us to look down her super (painful looking? like idk how she's not screaming about it) squished boobs during this tense and important moment god that took me out. whenever anyone acts like Faye always owns her sexiness and the camera never does anything I remember that scene.
Ranma 1/2: I've seen read a good chunk of it, and this result is...surprising. Maybe by the standards of 80's manga though, who knows.
Mixed Feelings
Dracula- IIII definitely think it dislikes women, sorry guys. Mina is a great character and you do have to take it in the context of when it was written. But there are surely contemporaries of Bram Stoker that wouldn't have randomly gone out of their way to scoff at the "New Woman". Not to mention again, really random sidebars about how men are so much smarter and cooler and women should be grateful to them. I could go on about Lucy and how Mina is treated and whether that's a critique of sexism or just playing into it and how it's so open to interpretation but I'll stop here.
also the book is hugely anti- Romani, immigrant etc and I think that ties into disliking women since some women are those Romani and immigrants
It really really felt like a case where a lot of people in the Drac Daily tag just wanted it to be super feminist because they liked it (you can like things without having to make them feminist! it's fine!), and the way they scoffed at feminist scholars who had "surface level readings" of the text (aka they dared to say it was sexist) still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
The Lego Movie: dislikes women. what are y'all on. Even it's own sequel calls it out for disliking women. Wildstyle is basically the only woman with real characterization and she's the purest concentration of "hypercompetent woman must play second fiddle to Average Male loser who is the one who actually saves the world and also she falls in love with him because of course she does'. Then Wonder Woman got one line (in literally the first theatrical move she got to even be in) and Superman and Batman a lot of screen time.
Does not like
Scott Pilgrim- Don't get this result, I'd put it at likes or mixed feelings? It's literally about how Scott has weird issues with women where he doesn't see them as to full people they are, and it calls him out on that hard. The whole sixth volume is how he made up a damsel in distress scenario for Kim and always took her for granted, how he put all the blame on Envy for the end of their relationship when he played a huge role in that, Knives finally getting over him, moving on, and telling him he needs to grow up a little (highlighting how his grossness towards her was him refusing to accept that he was an adult now, and that he was horrible to her, and yes he does apologize), and accepting that he and Ramona are both messed up people and she's just as flawed as he is, taking down the pedestal he put her on. And having Ramona triumphantly confront her abuser. Scott acknowledges he has a lot in common with Gideon, the supervillain!
Roxy is a sticking point, the whole 'it was a phase thing' and her and Ramona's relationshipbeing unexplored was annoying (fixed in Takes Off) but even she had some moments of pathos and was definitely the (Ramona's) ex the story seemed to sympathize with the most.
I dunno. this seems like a tumblr lacks media literacy thing again. Did you think the narrative agrees with Scott. Did you only watch the movie.
Succession- I'd go more mixed feelings? Dislikes is fine, I think it doesn't have enough women and often privileges male characters over them, but sometimes it's examination of the sexism Shiv faces is really incisive, and she's a complex character. But she should have gotten that abortion.
Watchmen: hates women actually. Pretty much anything written by Alan Moore does.
Persona 4: I think it hates women actually. But dislike is fine too.
Merlin: Everything I've heard about the show puts in in the hates camp rather than dislikes, but i never watched it (I did watch this video on it, and the bootlicking is out of this world if it's accurate) so I can't really comment
Hates Women
Agree with all of these so far!

Hi! Ritsu's propaganda submitter here. What would you say is the best way to get into kagepro? Your propaganda made me curious^_^
OH WOW THANK YOU !!! and for the kind tags on your reblog too!!
to be entirely honest kagepro is a bit of a Mess and I'm a pretty casual (and old) fan of it, I haven't even caught up at all since like 2017-- this post (embedded below) has a really good comprehensive explanation of the situation!
basically it started as a series of plot-linked vocaloid songs, which is what I'm most familiar with! then there's also a manga (Kagerou Daze) and anime (Mekakucity Actors) and apparently novels too???
the anime (in my opinion) is basically only supplementary to the rest of it; the real heart of the series is the songs, but I read the manga online on one of those free translation websites back in the day and I definitely enjoyed that at the time as well!!
I don't usually post with links on the tumblr app so I have no idea if tumblr is embedding everything correctly, but this is Kano's character song that i mentioned in the propaganda!! It's an absolute classic and I highly recommend it! (And, due to being a classic, there's tons and tons of interesting vocal covers and such as well!)
youtube
most fanmade guides I've seen tend to consistently recommend starting with the songs and, if you do watch the anime, to do it dead last (otherwise it's deeply confusing because they don't really. like. explain anything that's happening. in the anime. basically it doesn't work very well as a standalone), but past that it's kind of a free for all.
as for what songs to start with, searching "kagepro" on YouTube turns up plenty of playlists to take your pick from!! after looking over a few of them I think this is probably the closest to my original experience (embedded below again since apparently Tumblr mobile is weird about in-text links) but ultimately kagepro is a bit more like a Jumble of Characters and Ideas than an actual chronological Plotline, especially since a lot of these songs are actually new and I don't even recognize them! (from what I've heard there is a chronological plot but there's lots of canon time-fuckery and rewinds and loops and routes and it's a whole mess.)
the really Classic songs that I personally recommend the most and consider the heart of the series, in my recommended order (sorted so songs with related characters are grouped together, with my personal favorite songs in bold), are:
Kagerou Days (Hibiya), Konoha's State of The World (Konoha), Children Record (basically the whole main cast), Ayano's Happiness Theory (Ayano, Kido&Kano&Seto), Toumei Answer (Shintaro&Ayano), Lost Time Memory (Shintaro), Kisaragi Attention (Momo), Otsukimi Recital (Momo&Hibiya), Imagination Forest (Mary), Shounen Brave (Seto, Mary), Yobanashi Deceive (Kano), Mekakushi Code (Kido), Yuukei Yesterday (Takane, Haruka), Headphone Actor (Takane), Outer Science (Saeru&Mary), Summertime Record (also the whole main cast; this is the good end I think)
after spending so much time thinking about this and typing it up I actually just went and put together a playlist in this order! especially because the titles differ slightly by translation and there's SO MANY covers that it's really hard to figure out what's the original version if you aren't already familiar with it. this is the playlist I picked the videos from if you are interested in more than just the classics, too!
SPEAKING OF COVERS !! this is a playlist of english covers for most of the really classic songs, and this is a half hour long english cover for a guitar medley of a lot of those same songs!! and this is by far my favorite cover ever for Outer Science, which i just. love how it sounds so much.
SORRY IF THIS IS ALREADY OVERWHELMING i just like to be really thorough if possible!!!! thank you for your interest and best of luck to your blorbo in the competition as well !!!!!! and absolutely feel free to reach out if there's any more questions or curiosities!!
TLDR is basically that I recommend checking out playlists of the songs and fanmade pvs, and/or the manga (under the name Kagerou Daze)! unlike the anime, the manga DOES seem somewhat understandable on its own, but I found it much more fun to read after already knowing about the characters from the songs!!

JDramas and their fascination with adults and minors(?)
TW: Grooming and Adult-Minor relationship
Jdramas are funny with the amount of dramas about an adult/minor relationship. Whether it’s teacher-student of not. I get that probably a huge chunk of them are adaptations of mangas.
But I can’t help but laugh at how many dramas are still going on that romanticise this as oppose to addressing the things. Maybe it has to do with how its perceived in Japan. Like take this example:
So I decided to watch Takane and Hana because I was curious by the plot synopsis and how it addresses the issue.
This is the plot from MDL:
“ After her older sister refuses to go to an arranged marriage meeting with Takane Saibara, the heir to a vast business fortune, high schooler Hana Nonomura agrees to be her stand-in to save face for the family. But what happens when Hana meets Takane is an unexpected pairing of utter opposites! “
Now. I don’t know what I was fully expecting. To be honest, I thought it would be, at least for a good chunk of the series about Hana, the high schooler having to pretend to be an adult and “deceive” the rich guy to avoid getting her father and family into trouble. I don’t know. I was expecting more of a comedy like she wants nothing to do with him but has to pretend she he believes she’s her sister.
What I got instead? The reveal happened within the first half of the first episode (unexpected). And in the original meeting they hated each other (expected). His response? Go to her school and shower her with flowers.
There was then a bit where the sister whose vain, dumps her boyfriend and decides she wants to be in the arranged marriage with Takane and her family agrees since she’s the original one (an adult) and the “pretty” sister. So then I thought it was gonna develop into Hana feeling unwanted by her family and Takane and the sister in the arranged marriage agreement but Takane not wanting it but trapped. What we get is Takane refusing the sister and insisting the arrangement is with Hana. So it becomes this weird thing where you have an adult actively pursuing a high schooler (though they try to play the narrative at times that he’s just doing it to get him to “submit” to the lavish lifestyle she despises. The you have his friends, her friends and HER parents all being chill about the whole thing and encouraging this relationship.
It’s all very wtf and not what I fully expected.
I think from what people said about the Manga is that the relationship is more friendship and feelings (at least on Takane’s side) don’t develop until she’s older or near the end of the manga. And that cause the series is only 8 episodes and 25 mins each - the last arc is crammed severely. Whereas the TV series has them kissing in episode 1 or episode 2 (not a “real” in love kiss) and the series portrays them having feelings early on but both react differently to having feelings.
As a whole, I liked the start of it, it was fast paced, but I got bored around the midway point and the development was rushed. I don’t mind watching series about student-teacher relationships since they are problematic and it’s my first time watching an adult-minor relationship. But it did leave me icky how there was no real opposition to them because of this everyone was rooting for them. The series just wasn’t strong enough for me to forget my morals and enjoy the fictional drama cause I got bored easily.
At least with TWDrama, Lessons in Love - it addressed the themes, they had opposition. And even though the relationship was romanticised, they had moments where you could see the power imbalance between the teacher-student and the level of grooming when they first hook up (which stops on the student’s side because he felt uncomfortable and the teacher was clearly doing it at revenge at his mother). They had strong opposition from adults (and some students). It also turned into a revenge drama and thriller later on. And while it still had some issues, the teacher’s best friend who is the school nurse encouraging her to hook up with the student and of course the happy ending for the relationship. You can abandon your morals for the sake of a fictional drama because it was quite solid and it addressed other themes like social class, wealth, rich/poor, the influence of parents on a child’s education (and the influence of a rich parent on their child’s education.

【KagePro】 KuroEne AU: Kuroha pretends to join the Mekakushi Dan
KuroEne AU scenario where Kuroha/Saeru pretends to join the Mekakushi Dan, while getting intimate with Ene. Shintaro gets worried for Ene's sake as her friend.

Since I haven't bought the Kagerou Daze Manga volumes in EN yet, only in JP
I'M CRYING LMAOOOO 😭😂
Ty for your service as always 🫡💞

Bear with me y'all since I haven't bought the EN volumes yet
I only have a few of the JP volumes rn. I'm planning to buy the rest eventually
I found out the exact font that the EN Official TL uses to typeset the KagePro manga's main dialogue with
I'm still trying to find the exact font for the JP one, so it's just really similar (but similar enough to fool people LOL)
Close enough since it's REALLY similar
I also found out the exact font used for Magi's main dialogue in Viz's EN Official TL too :)
...
F: YAAAYYYY
I'm gonna gaslight a few people into thinking this is the canon one
Me: IKR cuz now we have the exact same font as the official version LMAOOO 😂
...
F: WE DID IT 🤯🔥
Me: Power of teamwork, wahoo!!
F: Now time to fool people
...
F: GOOGLE TRANSLATE 😭😭😭
Tumblr media
Me: HELPPP
F: It'd be funnier if the panel below was Saeru smirking while saying "hell yeah"
Me: WHDSHDHS HONESTLY IT WOULD
I should edit another image from the KagePro manga (later)
F: WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO DO 😭
Me: Like just take a panel of him smirking from somewhere else and then paste it instead of the bottom panel
But dang the last panel in the OG page overlaps with the 2nd panel
Maybe later but not rn
F: That's gonna take a lot of photoshopping
Tho it is possible
F: Pls focus on other things 🙏
F: Also isn't your birthday coming up?-
Me: Oooh yeah it is! I'm planning to draw something for it tho it might be late (which is fine)
September 12th ^^
F: Noted :3
Me: 6 days away from 9/6 Day and 6 is Ene's Mekakushi Dan code number. Ene we were made for each other wifey 💙💘💞💗
KuroEne AU: Kuroha/Saeru pretends to join the Mekakushi Dan
Continuation of these rambles.
Saeru's amassed power and resources
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Minor thing but wrong particle in the 1st image
I think whoever edited the Wiki page copy pasted from Ayano's Eye Ability, Favouring Eyes (目をかける, Me wo Kakeru) cuz there's a typo here
What it says:
目をか冴える蛇 (Me wo Ka Saeru Hebi)
What it should be:
目が冴える蛇 (Me ga Saeru Hebi)
...
Other than that, the KagePro wiki mods are doing God's work fr
...
F: Also Saeru sees 2 disabled kids (HaruTaka) and went "Hell yeah let's kill them"
Me: HWHDSHSDH not only that but he's actually the reason why they were put into a Special Needs classroom for just the two of them
Like Iirc his manipulation while possessing Kenjirou got Takane and Haruka into their own classroom in the first place
F: Just gotta beg the principal bro, as long as they got the budget they're fine
F: I still stand by my old statement
Tumblr media
Me: LMFAOOO
Me: Oh yeah I just remembered. He's also the reason why Takane Haruka and Ayano's deaths don't get mass reported to the media cuz he makes sure it stays rather contained within the school
F: 3 kids died on the same day
"Nah bro, nothing going here"
Me: RIGHT like 3 kids dying on the same thing would be a massive thing but apparently cuz of him it gets suppressed
F: Damn Kenjirou's co-workers trusts him that much 😨
Me: I swear I read somewhere that it's cuz of Saeru that the deaths of 3 teens gets swept under the rug so it doesn't ger reported to the media but I can't find it
F: Wait why was Takane put into his lab again?-
Me: Oh yeah that actually does bring up a good point.
Like it's possible that Kenjirou (while under the influence of Saeru) administers a poison of some kind to possibly kill her after she collapses from her chronic illness. Then he takes her body to the lab
Me: The fact that Saeru takes both Takane (who turned into Ene) and Haruka (whose body turned into Konoha) into his lab…
F: Yeah, she became a digital virus and all, and her body completely lost all consciousness, I'm just wondering why she was kept in the lab
To prevent it from rotting? I guess that's reasonable, or it's just for the plot???
Me: Yeah I don't think there's much details other than that she was separated from her physical body. Like I noticed Takane's hair grows longer in Novel Route (her bangs grew after 2 years) once she's reunited with her body
Tumblr media
F: I'm gonna guess that it's to keep them from rotting
And perfect plot device for Ene to just suddenly "HELL YEAH I'M ALIVE AGAIN" in the anime
Me: Ooooh yeah true
Me: OH I FOUND IT
The 2nd image
And this is exactly why I HC'ed that he'd get a nice real estate for him and Ene to stay in in my KuroEne AU~
F: WHERE DID BRO GET THE BUDGET FROM WHA 😨
Me: Tax evasion /jk
Ok I'm kidding he probably has ways to convince/manipulate people
F: I know humans are dumb, but this guy took it to another level
KuroEne Meme
Tumblr media
F: A very normal unedited panel (trust me)
Me: I'M SCREAMING
Me: Someone should definitely ask him this in my KuroEne AU 😭😂
F: Go for Mary wwww
Me: Mary or Shintaro asking him this would honestly be funny LOL
F: He'd be frightened about them knowing it too
Me: I think in my AU, he'd certainly be a bit surprised/caught off guard by others knowing and/or catching onto their relationship, but doesn't mind. For most Routes, he goes along with Ene's wishes to keep their relationship a secret.
It's so funny to think about the perspective of an outsider (another MekaDan member) on their relationship. Plans of trying to rewind the world and whatever those two (KuroEne) are doing
F:
"You're going to fuck her again, aren't you?" (Mary to Saeru)
"You're going to fuck him again, aren't you?" (Shintaro to Ene)
I've cracked the code 🔥
Me: LMAO
Shintaro: GOD, ENE!!! Don't make me witness your "games" with that guy!!!
F: Like yes he wants to rewind the world so he can keep living forever, but he also wants a gf :3
F: His jaw would drop so hard it de-attaches 😭
Me: Right cuz by causing the time loops he can live forever AND be with his lover for eternity ^^ It's a win-win for him
It'd be so embarrassing for him (Shintaro) like he never imagined the selfish cheeky Ene would get all flustered and embarrassed around that guy. Added with their relationship.
F: This trade is unfair man, Ene's friends gotta die and she can't continue to the future
Me: Yeah… he actively robs everyone of a future in order to serve his own selfish interests, and he knows it.
...
Me: It's so funny to think about how any MekaDan member who finds out about their r/s would be in disbelief.
Though some others would take it better.
Meanwhile Shintaro feels like a roof dropped on him
F: Momo is just supportive, not concerned about Saeru's background 😭
Me: Yeahh others like Seto and Momo are confused
And others would be confused but supportive
F: While Mary is all "😭😭???"
Ene with that "I can fix him" mindset is so funny
Me:
Kuroha: You can't fix me, but I can make you worse :)
I'll make you just like me -> I'll dye you in my colour
F: OH They both got worse indeed
Too freaky
Me: Let's just say that Kuroha seducing/enticing Ene and generally encouraging her to let go of her inhibitions/restraints causes them to indulge in their pleasures together.
While they play the game together, Kuroha decides to play nice… for now.
He knows he's just deciding to act tamer and finding something to entertain himself with (someone to play the game with) before he moves forward with his real plans.
Me: But yeah I do think a few members like Shintaro are kinda suspicious of Saeru's background.
Someone suddenly came and announced that they could make an android body for Ene, free of charge? Something doesn't feel right. He seems up to something...
Like Shintaro mostly dismisses it, but when he really starts thinking about it… It's too suspicious.
F: And Saeru's the only one who's good at keeping Ene under control as if he's playing with her mind
F: Ene has no filter around people unless she develops attachment towards them (kinnie moment-)
Me: YEAH cuz at first Shintaro's parading with Saeru's existence like "Wahoo! There's someone who can finally tease Ene and keep that pesky virus under control! Payback! I KNEW that life would finally reward me with good things eventually!!!"
Me: It's honestly funny to imagine Shintaro accidentally walking in on glimpses of their intimacy (them kissing) and finding out that they're romantically involved. And then, when he really starts thinking about it... Saeru's whole deal seems suspicious.
F: Also he has no degree in engineering but can build a whole android body??? FOR FREE?? Actually he is the degree he doesn't need one, does he?
Me: With his accumulation of knowledge, yeah
Me: Yeahhh it'd be fun if Shintaro confronts Saeru alone about how suspicious he seems. He came out of nowhere and suddenly insists that he made a body for her.
(Well… technically the entire MekaDan did but they feel more earnest and genuine)
He tells Saeru that he doesn't know what's in it for him and that it's not his business, but he's worried for her (Ene) as a friend
Tho Saeru probably knows how to counter Shintaro's answers just due to his knowledge. Shintaro still feels suspicious but lets it slide for now
Me: Same with me omg I mildly relate to Takane/Ene in a lot of aspects
This is apart of what makes her a very important and personal character to me
F: So Kuroha yapping is real, got it
F: Seeing her in MCA is like looking at a mirror for me omfg 😭
Me: He seems talkative/chatty when he wants to be
Tumblr media
Me: I relate to Takane/Ene sm…
F: What if Shintaro questions Ene instead 🤔
Me: OH yeah Shintaro probably tries asking Ene first cuz Kuroha is honestly… unnerving/intimidating ngl
F: I mean, just look at him
I'D RUN BRO, THE DAN WAS STRONG FOR THIS
Or is Shintaro mad he can't pull and Ene manage to pull a random ass emo guy that looks like her crush's game avatar under a day?
Me: (KagePro Manga: Ch. 9)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(KagePro Manga: Ch. 17)
Tumblr media
But Ene obviously doesn't want to tell him about their r/s and goes like "Don't pry into a girl's secrets!!!"
Ene gets embarrassed when Shintaro asks her about her r/s with him. Ene just tells him that he is a mysterious stranger that came and proposed that he could give her a body after hearing about her current predicament of being trapped inside the cyber world.
MekaDan members are just so compassionate as well
Shintaro: What's your deal with that guy!? Well, look, look, I know it's not my business, but—!
Shintaro: See! That sounds even more suspicious when you put it like that! I mean—! What kind of guy would do this all for free!? You can't tell me he's doing all this out of the GOODNESS of his heart!
Ene doesn't tell Shintaro that he (Kuroha) resembles Konoha.
Because she wants to keep her past to himself and avoid reminding him (Shintaro) of the past)
Though I think Shintaro eventually does put two and two together that he looks like Haruka.
And that eventual realization hits him like a brick
Tumblr media
Shintaro: What if you get into trouble and something happens? That guy just looks like he's up to no good!
Ene: Awww~ Is Master worried about me?
Shintaro: Not!!! (-> He totally is)
Ene: But don't worry! He's been really nice to me! He always does what I ask~ Whenever I want something, he always finds a way to give it to me! Ene: He takes me places to go and sightsee, like the Amusement Park~ He gives me gifts, such as new clothes to wear~ Video games~ Unlike a certain someone who just stays cooped up in his room all day~
Shintaro: Heyyy! 💢
Shintaro: But isn't that suspicious?
Shintaro: (Why the sudden favouritism, though? He has a thing for her and wants to impress her, or something?)
Ene: I think you're just being a worryart, Master~
Me: Saeru fulfills his purpose as the "being that fulfills wishes" to an extent... He grants Ene's wishes and desires and pleasures.
But never completely grants his owner's wish
Ene isn't his owner tho so he can play along with her whims to appease her
...
F: Shintaro forgot genuinely nice people exists probably, but the fact that they're talking about Saeru in this context, he has the right to be suspicious
Me: Yeahhh like at this point I think Shintaro is still knee deep into his pessimism/cynicism, but slowly opening up cuz of the MekaDan
But with Saeru's context, showing up one day and building her a body? He finds it hard to believe. The situation is SO surreal to him.
F: Both Ene and Saeru are countering his arguments as much as possible lmao
Me: God Ik Shintaro gets super cowardly but he has some serious balls when he wants to 😭
Like when Kuroha goes on his killing spree at the end of Manga Route 1 (and starts killing everyone in the Mekakushi Dan after their Amusement Park trip).
Shintaro tries to shield Momo, his younger sister, from Kuroha when he points the gun at her and runs in front of her.
The adrenaline rushes in for him to protect a sibling/family member with his life
F: Bro hides his potential for plot duh
Me: OH yeah true
Me: And so, Shintaro realizes he has to confront Kuroha himself after he realized he's not getting any answers from Ene…
Shintaro: (Great...... Worst option. Ene wouldn't tell me anything when I tried asking, so now it looks like the only option is to ask HIM... He's frigging scary, though!)
F: And Saeru using reverse psychology on him 😭
Me:
Shintaro: (God, this is the worst kind of situation...! I mean, what am I doing? I know it's not my business, but… What the hell is this?)
Shintaro: (I mean, no matter how you look at it, it's just strange… He managed to accomplish something like transferring someone's consciousness to a robot...)
Shintaro: (How he'd manage to develop tech more advanced than this world's greatest scientists? It can't just be because he's some prodigy from a wealthy family or whatever. It doesn't make sense. And all for free? And I can't help but feel worried for her, too. What if she gets into trouble because of him?)
F:
Shintaro: What are you up to, huh??? Why would you suddenly create a fully functioning Android Body specifically for her? You're not gonna hurt her, are you?
Kuroha: Are you projecting right now?
F: Reminding back the trauma of losing his friends just because he doesn't keep an eye on them for 1 sec…
Me: ;__;
Me: Also knowing Saeru, he can definitely spin up some lies to get away with it. He's good at twisting words. He knows what to say.
Me: OOO yeah I definitely imagine they'd say something like this
F: The fact that your canon-verse KuroEne AU reminds me of RuiNene (ProSeka)
(Genius mfs inventing shit that benefits their gfs)
Me: Reminds me my friend Aya was like "Him and his autistic wife" 💜💚
F: They're both autistic actually, Sega told me-
Tumblr media
Me:
I imagined a scenario like this
Shintaro: (Shintaro approaches Kuroha from behind and places a hand on his shoulder.)
Shintaro: Hey, hold it...!
Kuroha: (Kuroha raises an eyebrow with an amused smirk on his face when he turns around to face him.)
Kuroha: Hm? Oh, Shintaro? What is it?
Shintaro: I need to talk to you. In private.
Kuroha: Well? What did you want to talk to me about?
Shintaro: Ene said that you showed up one day and told her you could make a body for her. And all for free? It doesn't make sense! What's in it for you? You can't say you're doing this out of the KINDNESS of your heart.
Shintaro: Sometimes you guys disappear for days on end, too!
Shintaro: …Look. I don't trust you.
Kuroha: Oh? Are you really that suspicious of me?
Me: Shintaro's comment of "Sometimes you guys disappear for days on end" is in reference to Kuroha taking Ene to visit his real estates for them to be together during their trysts (games of intimacy)
F: And then he went on yapping about how much he banged Shin's digital malware, peak plot
Me: LMFAO 😭😂
Oh yeah I imagine that in Routes where Kuroha joins the Mekakushi Dan in Konoha's place, he knows that certain members will be more on guard around him than others
Thankfully he's good at talking his way around things (and he can see through Kano's Deceiving Eyes too)
F: Tbh, since he can easily manipulate Mary into resetting the time
Maybe he would play around like this
Me: Oooh yeah true
Like he's interested to see how much he can mess around (even when the others start to catch onto him).
He probably just thinks "You all can't stop me anyways"
Me: Mary would be confused but supportive. She's got the spirit. She'd still be like ❓
F: 8 (since Konoha is used as a vessel) red eyed teens vs. A snake demon with a glock
Me: WDSHHDSHDSH
This is going to end badly.
F: Does she not have any suspicion about him being Clearing Eyes orrrr-
Me: It seems like everyone is unaware of the Clearing Snake's existence before the start of the present day plot except for Kano (and Ayano, who is in the Daze in most Routes) in the present plot
Me: But yeah I wonder if Mary or any others would start to catch onto him. Cuz technically Kuroha can fool the others by saying he's Awakening Eyes…
He can use Konoha's Eye Ability, Awakening Eyes, and his eyes turn red when he uses it
F: True and everyone thought that he might have another someone that got sucked into the Kagerou Daze and he was the one who got out alive
I feel like Shintaro will most likely find out
He's got the highest suspicion for him
Me: Yeah I think Shintaro is one of the members most likely to catch onto Saeru first. Plus he's worried about Ene for the sake of a friend
Shintaro's technically clever and was considered an academic prodigy. He always aced tests due to his photographic memory Iirc
F: I FORGOT HE'S A GENIUS
Me: When Shintaro asks Ene, she just tells him she's decided not to delve too much into Kuroha'sbackground/past
Shintaro: But don't you find it suspicious? He just showed up one day and said he could do this for you. Something doesn't feel right...
F: Academically tho I don't think he can read people well
Me: It's cuz he's usually so pathetic /endearing
Oh yeah Shintaro has booksmarts he's not good at reading people emotionally
And obviously Shintaro is one of the only members aside from Ene to realize that he looks like Haruka
Like the realization probably hits him way later on
F:
Ene: But look! I can change my clothes now!
F: He was trying to forget Haruka too… Are you trying to re-torture this guy but with a KuroEne love/hate-sex twist onto it???
Me:
Ene: I'm not just stuck in your computer or phone anymore! I see it as a win! (⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡)
Me: HELPPPP
Oh god yeah I just realized the KuroEne AU routes where Kuroha joins the Mekakushi Dan ends up putting Shintaro through the wringer emotionally
Imagine having to deal with worrying over a friend and having to keep an eye on a guy you're really suspicious of cuz you don't know what he's really up to (and what his true intentions are)
F: I feel like making him notice that Ene looks like Takane and then realizing that she IS Takane
And witnessing her GETTING FUCKED BEFORE HE DOES is uh Idk cool plot but poor guy
Me: Yeah like he'd eventually put two and two together. And then it explains her infatuation with the Haruka lookalike guy (Kuroha)
F: You're making him relapse wow 😭😭😭
Me: Honestly sad for him cuz Ene wanted to avoid reminding him of the past but Kuroha's actions end up doing it anyways
F: So do I say fuck you, Author, or fuck you, Saeru???
Me: Didn't realize how much emotional baggage Shintaro would go through with this but it's interesting to think about from a writing standpoint
One of the things that Micchan pointed out to me is that apparently Haruka can see and hear whatever Konoha's body feels.
So when Black Konoha (Kuroha/Saeru) fucks Ene… Yeah.
I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT EITHER UNTIL SHE POINTED IT OUT TO ME
F: It does make it interesting from Shintaro's perspective but my man just wanna stay inside
F: SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT
SHIT.
Me: Kuroha's actions end up causing everyone the worst kind of slow eating heartbreak oh my god
F: WELL UH…
That was awkward 😨
M: Holy shit I’m loving that AU this is so angst fuel ⚰️🔥 I’m so sorry Haruka who’s in the Kagerou Daze watching all this unfold SHDJGHKAJSRGD
Me: MICCHAN WHDSHSDH
Me: Oh yeah KagePro LN 6 -over the dimension- canonized that Haruka can see and hear what Konoha's body experiences. So…
F: Haru and Shin are a victim here bro
Me: YEAH I'M MOSTLY JUST GONNA… LOOK AWAY FROM THAT LITTLE TIDBIT
F: ALSO CAN'T AYANO SEE TROUGH SHINTARO'S VISION??? CMIIW
Me: HELPPPPPPPPPPP
F: 4 VICTIMS IF WE INCLUDE MARY WTF
For Ayano though, it depends if this Route takes place after Manga Route 2 (MR2) cuz that's when Shintaro gains an Eye Ability (Ayano as the Snake of Retaining Eyes)
So yeah Ayano is included as one of the people exposed to learning about KuroEne's intimacy if it's post-MR2 AND if Shintaro learns about it.
Cuz Iirc Ayano visits Haruka in the Kagerou Daze and can see what Shintaro sees
Me: I'm just imagining before KuroEne get intimate with each other again...
If Kuroha's truly fucking evil, he can make a side comment like, "We have an audience here, don't we?" In reference to Haruka and Konoha being forced to be spectators to his actions.
And Ene would just be confused by his one off comment like "But there's no one here in this room?"
And he just grins to himself and goes like "…It's nothing" (^-^)
Technically all of the MekaDan members are victims but some especially get put through the wringer
F: Bro's gonna make Mary commit mass murder just to reset the timeline so she didn't have to witness this
Me: Ngl 5 victims if we include Haruka and Konoha. Aren't they basically forced to just be a spectator to Kuroha's actions (including killing everyone, and KuroEne's intimacy)
Cuz Kuroha suppresses Konoha's consciousness while he possesses him but he's not fully gone
Technically, all of the MekaDan members are victims, but some ESPECIALLY get put through the wringer in this.
F: Oh shit an accidental threesome-
Me: YEAH THIS WAS ME WHEN I REALIZED THAT HARUKA (AND PROBABLY KONOHA) WOULD SEE KUROENE'S GAMES... THAT THE "PLAY" TOGETHER...
F: I'm taking off my glasses
That's enough of seeing privilege
Tumblr media
Me: I just mainly thought about and focused on the two of them (KuroEne) but then I realized the routes where Kuroha joins the MekaDan ends up causing the others sm pain
F: Positive thinking
He cooks for the Dan, does the laundry for the Dan, takes Ene to the amusement part, cuddles with Ene at night
AND THEN HE KILLS THEM
He did enough nice things ✌️
Me: LMAO
Oh yeah he'd be great at doing the Dan's household chores
And he'd take Ene to the Amusement Park and Ene would come back holding plushies and stuff ^^
F: The only way to gain trust around here tbh
Me: One thing I thought about is that when Shintaro starts to catch onto Kuroha by sifting info, he starts to look into his background and sees how abnormal it is that this guy has money and real estates under his name
When Shintaro confronts Kuroha about this he just tells him (lies) that he gained the inheritance from his wealthy family
F: Pssst… check his taxes
Me: Also another factor that plays into this is that Ene is honestly… gullible and easily trusting. So she wants to believe in Saeru
F: Wait what if Shin asks for his last name, to y'know
Find his possible relatives on Facebook?
Me: OOOOH. I still think Kuroha can still lie his way outta this just fine but Shintaro's probably still suspicious of him (in his mind)
Cuz I imagine Saeru generally secludes himself
F: Ene's mind is all like "Damn, you changed a lot Haruka, what phase did you go through, holy shit"
Me: YEAH I think Ene knows he's different from Haruka but still feels a certain fondness for him
In this Route it means that he would've gained access to resources and amassed money and power through Kenjirou, and when Kenjirou dies after he leaves the body to possess Konoha, Kuroha probably has all his resources forwarded to him
F: Tateyama Saeru, yeah that sounds real stupid
Me: YEAH I don't think of it as adoption but rather like passing it on to a successor. Saeru SHOULD be smart enough to create fake names and identities too
Oh I also just realized.
He can use Awakening Eyes to change his appearance, so he can just change into Kenjirou's appearance even after his death
He can make as many fake identities as he wants to avoid drawing suspicion
He doesn't even need to be labeled as Kenjirou's successor, but he can do whatever he wants to avoid raising suspicion
F: Fooling the government into thinking they're relatives lololololol
Me:
Shintaro: Take a look at this, Ene…
Me: Oh yeah and apparently Konoha stays at Kenjirou's home at first after Saeru ensures his creation
Me: Oh I also just realized. He can use Awakening Eyes to change his appearance so he can just change into Kenjirou's appearance even after his death
He can make as many fake identities as he wants to avoid drawing suspicion
Shintaro: Are you funneling money or something? How the hell did you get the resources to make a fully functional android body?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
F: Ooohhh then… Kenjirou inviting both Hibiya and Hiyori into the city is also a setup…
F: TAX EVASION SHIN, TAX EVASION 🔥🔥🔥🔥 /HJ
F: So in Konoha's State Of The World…
Oh I get it now
The story is more complex than I thought
Me: People on the KagePro Wiki are doing god's work fr compiling all the lore
Me: Yeah it looks like Kenjirou (who's possessed by Saeru) inviting them (Hibiya and Hiyori) to the city at the start of KagePro's plot is a setup to orchestrate their deaths

do you have any ideas on saeru and haruka being friends... because i would love to write a fic and my only problem is that i'm not an ideas man :'))) i can imagine they could meet when mary drags saeru into the daze?
AAAA thank u for this ask its very good and im sorry for answering it so late but!! firstly i think if everyone survived including saeru and kenjirou, kenjirou and haruka Who Is His New Son can take saeru out to Buy Clothes Like A Human. yes this is an excuse to draw him in my clothes again
Tumblr media
manga/anime spoilery stuff under the cut
i think it would be really interesting that if after he gets dragged into the daze he met haruka there,,, although im not quite sure how that would work out cuz i think its implied he and takane meet again in?? the afterlife??? i think???? but maybe in another timeline or something like that haruka is still alive in the daze like how he was at the end of mca it would be really cool if he and saeru got to talk. like maybe saeru thought he was close to disappearing and haruka kinda. sees him break down and screaming about how he doesnt want to die and it would remind haruka of himself,, i would love for them to be friends and i think if anyone would be willing to be friends with him it would be haruka cuz haruka is Very Good and also understands that terrible fear of death,,,, maybe he could be trying to help saeru accept it because haruka seemed to be forced to come to terms with his own death and then theres that scene in the manga where he tries to console takane when he thinks shes talking about her inevitable death,,, thats actually what this post was about cuz its something i think about a lot,,,, i feel like it would be friendship based less on They Get Along So Theyre Friends but Haruka Takes Pity On Saeru Who Is Clearly Very Lonely And Distressed All The Time. maybe haruka can make him go to therapy cuz he definitely shouldnt have to deal with. Saerus Issues. i just feel like saeru could really use having someone as kind and understanding as haruka and haruka could use someone who understands his feelings on death as well,,,
ALSO i just remembered u wanted fic ideas and im not great at that but obviously i Really love the concept of them just talking so i hope that my incoherent rambling helped at least a little bit <3<3<3

can you tell me about harutaka? i honestly am interested now bc i have no idea what it is but it being your second favorite anime ship makes it sound pretty promising :D
OKAY SO
harutaka is a ship from the kagerou project which is a vocaloid-song-series-turned-novel-series-turned-manga-turned-anime and so on and so on. the actual plot is mostly focused on a group of kids who call themselves the mekakushi dan (blindfold gang) who each have a superpower (called an "eye ability") and are stuck in a time loop that repeats every august 15th, but the main appeal of the series is the tangled web of relationships between the characters, and the songs (and chapters, etc) that focus on their relationships and histories and how those brought them to where they are today
Tumblr media
harutaka is the ship between kokonose haruka and enomoto takane! their meeting is mostly explained in the song yuukei yesterday - basically, takane is a high school student with narcolepsy and a bad attitude who's always found it hard to make friends, since people tend to avoid her. to accommodate her during classes, her school puts her in a handicap class with just one other student - haruka, whose chronic illness has always made it hard for him to live a normal life, but who wants nothing more than to make friends, starting with takane. they're sort of opposites in that way. takane finds haruka's cheerful demeanor and relentless interest in her annoying - ideally, she'd like nothing to do with him.
Tumblr media
UNFORTUNATELY FOR HER they both fall for each other basically as soon as they meet. the cherry on the cake is that they're dumb little teenagers who have never BEEN in love before (not to mention all the clashing feelings about having someone care about you unconditionally for the first time) so they deal with it in about the blushiest, dorkiest, most teenage way possible - haruka points his dumb cute face at haruka and she turns red and yells at him and he laughs all shy. it's a very tsundere/sweetboy romance at its core but i think the extra layers of getting to be very happy and feel normal and welcome for once in your life make this one on the surface alone
HOWEVER...you might notice that these characters don't appear to be in the lineup of the rest of the dan in the image above...except they are! just not quite as themselves. this is a bit that fits into the larger story of kagepro so it's going to sound a little strange on its own, but basically, their teacher was a part of this experiment studying the origin of the time loop they're stuck in - dealing with the supernatural powers that you gain once you're stuck in it. they don't know that he's been treating them as subjects this whole time, but going back a little into the high school romance side of things...right as the two of them are reaching the peak of their pining phase, one afternoon in class, haruka has a stroke - but to takane, it just looks like he's sleeping, and ignoring her, so she gets mad and goes home. later that day, when she finds out what happened, she realizes that this might be her last chance to tell haruka how she felt, and sprints to the hospital...except she never makes it there. when she collapses on the way, the proctors of the experiment find her, and separate her body from her consciousness, turning her into a (not quite artificial) a.i. that gets uploaded into the protagonist's computer. meanwhile, at the hospital, haruka is being offered everything he's ever wanted - a brand new body, with no weakness or illness...and no memories or emotions, either. he protests against it crying that he just wants to see takane, but it's not up to him in the end.
Tumblr media
in their new forms, the two go by ene (enomoto takane) and konoha (kokonose haruka) - a cyber girl and robot boy. this is how they're stuck for the bulk of the story - everything that happens before this is a backstory that you only find out once you've seen both of them in action in their new lives!! and in their new lives, ene can't STAND konoha. takane really devotes herself to the role of ene, so even the people who she knew in her "past" life don't realize it's her...but it's the fact that konoha has no idea who she is that really hurts. imagine that every day you're tortured by the fact that you never got to tell the person you loved how you felt and now you're in this weird scary situation and you have no idea what's going to happen or if you'll ever get to be yourself again, and then he appears, but he doesn't look like he did or act like he did and even though you're painfully aware that it's him, he doesn't know it's you or even remember you or anything you did together...and you can't even let people know what you're feeling because you're stuck in this new identity!! through being in the dan together ene is forced to spend a lot of time with konoha but she refuses to address him by name (calling him "mr. imposter" instead which just sounds like an amongis joke now but is very emotional within the context of canon)
i really could go on and on and on about the very real angsty teenage emotions that go into this ship and the themes of love and loss but i've already gone on long enough - it's a combination of the actual dynamic and the goofy will-they-or-won't-they and the hardcore emotional story that has kept me on this train for all these years. i started shipping these two in MIDDLE SCHOOL!! and even now the fact that once the time loop is broken and august ends they get to have their happy ending and be together makes me think that wow. love is real and worth fighting for.
mekakucity actors is a bad anime and i definitely don't recommend it if you're trying to consume an easy-to-understand version of the kagerou project, but i will leave you with the anime version of yuukei yesterday because it's basically the only canon content we get of harutaka (and friends...i would explain shinaya but that's a whole nother post). thank you for letting me ramble! :)

I said at the beginning of the year that I would share my reviews more on my blog instead of just on Instagram and Goodreads. I’ve been reading a lot so far this year, so my reviews will be delayed on here.
Friend me on Goodreads here to read my reviews in real-time!

107. Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wow, this book had more of a punch than I anticipated! I think books like this one are super important--not just because of the content, but because of the audience it's geared towards. Young readers now are learning more and more about society than a lot of us did at their age, so I think it's perfectly fitting that a book like this one is out there for kids to devour. One of the things I liked the most about this book was the allegory of racism in a magical community. Usually in fantastical novels for kids (older ones, anyway), there's this belief that no matter what you look like, the moment you go to another magical place all of your worries about racism goes away because MAGIC. But in this one, not only did our MC have to contend with the racism in her normal life, she had to face more racism in her new life, just with a new title. So many of the actions taken against her by those around her, and the comments (like putting her brother on a pedestal because he was the star of the school and calling him the exception to the rule, or one girl actively telling her that "You can take the girl out of the ghetto, but not the ghetto out of the girl) really made me think that this poor kid went from one ignorant situation to another. Not only is she trying to find her brother and solve the mystery of his disappearance, but she also has to deal with racist and ignorant people around her. Imagine calling a child evil because of something they can't control. Imagine going out of your way to ensure that they fail. Imagine you or your child hearing the things this child heard while trying to just do her best in a system that's always been made to be against her, both in the human world and in the magic world. Imagine, imagine, imagine. Another thing I loved about this book was her resilience. She is brave, and smart, and has such a big future in this new world of hers. I'm so excited to read the rest of this series as it comes out. This book was POWERFUL and I highly recommend it. Not just for the young readers in your life, but I think parents and other readers would highly benefit from reading Amari's story.

108. Mindy Kim & the Yummy Seaweed Business by Lyla Lee--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Okay, this book was ADORABLE. I haven’t read a 6-8 book in a long time and I’m thankful to my friend on Instagram who recommended these books! Mindy has to deal with not only her grief about losing her mom and her dad’s busy schedule (as well as his own grief), but she’s also at a new school in a new State where she is the only Asian student. I’ve mentioned this in some of my most recent reviews, but I love that these important topics are being discussed in children’s books. We see moments of racism in this book where Mindy is left upset, even if she doesn’t fully understand just why certain comments and actions are so hurtful. And even if she doesn’t dwell on it, a parent reading this with their little one would notice and hopefully learn if they see their own behaviours mirrored in the actions of some of these adults. But we also see moments of kindness and love as a young girl tries her best to find ways to make her dad happy. Despite the heavier undertones in this book, there was an overall feel of sweetness and childhood innocence. The ability to apologize when you know you’re in the wrong, the innocence of emotions getting away from you, and the sweetness of a daughter loving her father. This was a great read and I highly recommend it for everyone, but especially the little ones in your life who will be entering situations where books like these and their lessons are really important.

109. The Dead Zone by Stephen King--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This one, I felt, held more of an emotional punch rather than a creepy feeling. I really enjoyed it! I loved the psychic angle and the MC proving the people who didn’t believe him or mocked wrong. Also, this was a King book that actually made me want to cry at the end. I didn’t give it a 5 because of some really slow moments. While I love that his stories always have a way of coming together at the end, certain scenes sometimes feel long, boring, or confusing. I’d recommend this for anyone who wants to read a King book that isn’t scary and if you’re a fan of 11/22/63!
___
110. Takane & Hana Vol. 1 by Yuki Shiwasu--⭐️⭐️⭐️
This one took me a while to read. I found that I wasn’t really in the mood to read it every time I picked it up—which is so different from when I pick up a manga I really want to read. The story had some funny bits and the artwork was gorgeous, but it really bugged me how every new chapter re-introduced the love interest. Over and over and over again. I get it: he’s rich, arrogant, and an asshole. Can’t you trust us to remember these key personality traits? But it wasn’t even just that. We were constantly re-introduced to the premise of the story. I don’t know how common this is WITHIN the same volume, but I haven’t encountered it yet—and if I have, it wasn’t as annoying as this one. I’ll keep reading the story because I’m curious, but this first volume was a bit of a rougher read for me.
___
111. You Have A Match by Emma Lord--⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I think the thing with this book is that the cover tells a different story than what really matters in this book. Yes, there’s a friends to more relationship in this, but the main storyline is about two girls who find out they’re sisters and are trying to solve that mystery. This isn’t a romcom—the romance is a super side story to the main storyline. And to be honest, I really enjoyed it. I wanted to see why these two sisters lived their whole life separated. I enjoyed the process and the friendships created along the way. I felt for the parents, but at the same time, I felt more for the girls. There were instances where I wanted to yell at the parents because they kept putting the reveal off. This was enjoyable overall—a great summer read. Not particularly memorable, but it does what it sets out to do: makes you question the strength of friendships and what they can overcome. Also, Instagram.
___
112. Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
When my friend raved about this book I was both excited and intimidated. I usually try to avoid hypes surrounding books because I go in with too-high expectations and a lot of the time, the expectations crush me while I’m reading. Thankfully, the hype is very well-deserved with this one. For me, the most important aspect of this book that stuck with me wasn’t the mystery surrounding the MC’s cousin’s death, but the character growth the MC himself experiences during the time of his investigation. Identity sounds like a pretty clear cut thing sometimes, but it’s a lot harder to know your own when you’re the child of an immigrant family. You live in a new country, get accustomed to new expectations and customs, and inevitably feel a culture shock when you’re re-introduced to the culture your parents grew up in. I saw myself so much in this MC. From my childhood to my current adult years, people have thought that they could define me and who I am simply because I say I’m this or this. But while others make a quick judgment, they don’t see the internal struggle. They don’t see you questioning yourself on whether you’re enough of this, or whether you’re enough of that. I think teenage me would have loved this book even more. The MC is constantly faced with criticism about his father choosing to move them to the States from the Philippines. The judgments and the preconceived notions of him and his family make him not only weary because he recalls how his uncle treated his father the first time he visited, but also wary because it sets him down this road of self-reflection. I haven’t read many (if any, unfortunately) books where a character goes to the Philippines. I’m so thankful to this book. I learned so much about the culture, the foods, and the struggles faced not just financially, but politically as well. I remember reading about some of the topics brought up in this book and it was extremely eye-opening. It’s so easy for us to look away because we have that privilege, but this book says, “No, look at me. I exist.” The MC, in his journey, also learns to speak up and use his voice. Not just against ignorant friends, but an annoyingly smug and verbally abusive uncle (who I hated to all hell). He also learns to listen. He learns that though not every story is perfect, they still have power. I think this is a great read for those who have one foot in two different worlds (hands and arms can be in other worlds, too). Especially if you’re trying to understand this part of you that wasn’t developed as you grew up. I’d also recommend it to readers who want to learn more about this struggle, learn more about a different culture that is more than its stereotypes, and/or want to read about a young teenager trying to come to terms with his grief and guilt.

I finished reading Takane no Hana nara Ochitekoi!!
I’m writing this in a very sleep-deprived and very stressed state. I’ve got finals, I’ve got exams, I’ve got course sign-up, but what am I doing? Finishing a 68-chapter series in two days! This manga is the definition of a slow burn rom-com. If you don’t like those, stay away. However, I enjoyed the ride; I really enjoyed the ride. And let me get this out of the way: THIS SERIES IS COMPLETED. And I found the ending satisfying enough... (and I have high-standards)
Summary: STORY: 8 CHARACTER: 9 ART: 8 ENJOYMENT: 10
*Because of the “after-series high”, numbers may be slightly inflated.
This series kind of reminds me of “Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun” because of its comedic timing and dense characters. While its cast isn’t as deep, if you love the Hori x Kashima dynamic, you’ll probably like this pair too! I think it’s because the gender roles are reversed/shared!
(There is technically a canon bisexual character in this series too who I found to be hilarious and easy to sympathize with.)
I would also like to recommend this to anyone who likes Horimiya! I enjoyed both, so I want to bring a series to bounce off of since Horimiya recently ended with only bonuses for the future.
Tumblr media
Story:
Takane no Hana nara Ochitekoi!!, or “Lofty Flower, Fall for Me!!”, is about your local handsome, smart, and untouchable prince named Kouta Shiraishi who ends up getting outdone and “out-princed” by the school’s beauty, Kaori Kurokawa. Due to Kurokawa’s “ikemen habits”, it’s Shiraishi’s job to help her overcome them... even if it means falling in love in the process.
Tumblr media
It sounds stupid. It is stupid. I love how stupid it is. When I read romance, sometimes, all I want is a himbo to fall in love with a female himbo. This is exactly what this is.
While the story feels repetitive (because it is), I can say that there is progression going on, so it’s not exactly Groundhog Day. Again, it just moves very slowly. Feelings do develop, but sometimes they stagnate. There are misunderstandings in this romance series (when is there not?)
I’m not sure how much more there is to say about this story because the core of it presents to be what it is.
Tumblr media
Characters:
Idiots. Idiots everywhere. We’ve got all kinds of idiots. We’ve got the himbo, the she-himbo, the s**t-disturber (who’s stupid on purpose), the rival idiot, and so much more. While there isn’t much character growth, there is more dynamic growth. None of these characters drastically change or go through life-altering events that make them completely different. They blend so well in chemistry.
Tumblr media
I don’t really want to go into detail about this either because they are so simple, and it’s easier to go and read the series, honestly.
I never hated a single character in this series. I got annoyed with them sometimes, but I couldn’t hate the entire character because they always gave me a stupid smile that left me wanting to read the next chapter.
Art
It’s adorable. For newcomers to manga, it might be difficult to decipher who’s talking sometimes, but I think it does its job for the most part. I don’t like Shiraishi’s colour scheme; in fact, I think colour scheme is consistently the weakest part, but manga is in black and white. It really doesn’t matter.
Since the story is repetitive, the art can look repetitive. A lot of the same faces are used along with a lot of the same screen tones and stuff. The punchlines are carried across effectively, and that’s all that matters in this rom-com.
Tumblr media
Overall
It’s enough for me to just say to go read this series. But this series would probably be second in terms of recommendations along with Horimiya (which is a very obvious pick for recommendations).
PROS: Funny, lovable characters, good ending, simplistic effective art, simple story, a dash of LGBTQ+ representation, and a very good enjoyable time.
CONS: A very slow burn, repetitive at times, does have misunderstandings in the story
Tumblr media
(I love this dynamic!)
“If I get more people into this series, there’s more of a chance for fan art, more content, and [...]” - me right now

ghhhhh kagepro is one of my fave series!!! how about ✨, 🎥(can be from the manga/LNs too), and/or 💕 for it??
✨ what draws you towards your hyperfixation? what is interesting about it?
The characters for sure. Kagepro’s plot is very. It’s very weird and inaccessible. But the characters themselves are just GOOD. The dynamics and bonds they have with each other are super unique, and I love the way they interact with each other. They’re all very unique, and I’m pretty much obsessed with them all.
🎥 do you have any favorite scenes from your hyperfixation?
Oh gosh that’s hard. There are a LOT of scenes from Kagepro. Hmm... let me think.
Well, for one, I really like all of Otsukimi Recital, especially in the song timeline iteration. Seeing Momo cheer Hibiya up is so, so cute, and actually what got me into the series in the first place.
I dunno if it’s my concrete fave, because there’s a LOT of scenes I’m forgetting -- but it’s definitely a contender. Big sister moments...
💕 tell us about one of your favorite characters and why you like them!
Haha another hard one. Believe it or not, I have five characters tied for my favorite Kagepro character. Hibiya, Hiyori, Haruka, Takane, and Momo. But picking just one to talk about, I think I’d have to talk about Momo.
I love Momo so, so much. Not only is she just a really kind and selfless person, but I love the ways she parallels her brother and interacts with people in contrast to him. Her dynamic w characters like Kido, Hibiya, and Kano are all SUPER fun, and there are some (I.E Ene) I desperately wish she got to interact with more because she is a DELIGHT in every scene she’s in.
Momo’s this sort of special character to me because she’s one of the first times I really felt ‘seen’ in media. Kagepro has a lot of neurodivergent characters, and intentionally or not Momo gives off a lot of ADHD vibes. Her struggling with not wanting to be seen and feeling like she was being judged in the novels especially hit me. I was struggling a LOT with RSD. But ultimately she found her place in the world and friends who loved her for who she is, and that’s super comforting.

Mod Kano out here flexing their rarely seen ruthlessness! Still not getting sleepy yet tho? Hmm how about sharing some random headcanons you have for any of your sources? -☕
sleepiness will probably come. way later but hmm for now! ill just ramble about Whatever skdnnd
fun fact I had to. remember what my sources were !! small brain kano
for kagepro, kano and kido are nb, because mod kido and i exist. we existed and changed the earth. woah. anyways I believe that harushin is very much canon. I have an au where saeru is nice and becomes kano’s best friend. I think takane is really good at rhythm games. yukkei quartet weekly gaming sessions. Haruka and Ayano are really good at dating sims. if shintaro was like. Not human he’d be a vampire. Kano doesn’t become a cop and instead becomes like idk. Therapist. Wants to help people like him. Part time bartender. Momo teaches music at the same school Kido teaches at. Wife. kano and Shintaro love miku. Hibiya grows up and stays friends with everyone. Momo helps him with homework. Seto and marry are florists. am i missing anyone
I know it’s not on my source list but namari Hime? Lydia is sassy as hell and so is funkbeat, causing them to clash. Lydia leaves and becomes best friends with bluenote because they both hate funkbeat. Cash is a try hard fool that uses big words to sound smart. He’s smart he’s just also really dumb. Death god girl really likes sweets
in ayakashi akashi i think riku, naki and karuta all have dumb crushes on each other. it’s very obvious. they’re all very dumb and cute. zero and rokuro have a super strong bond. found family 10/10. rokuro likes all manga because I say so. sesena and him read it together. lesbian/gay solidarity. Tina and Rokuro can only be friends when causing havoc. Ia likes small animals. Yuki has insomnia and that’s why she sleeps during the day.
i just got into cytus but if they were in a more. less world dying setting. maybe all friends. same school or something. ivy and vanessa childhood friends. nb lesbian ivy. dating Vanessa. Xenon has to stop neko from hacking everyone. Paff is super smart but really shy and it comes off as her being a bitch. Nora is a kid genius but she hides it so she doesn’t have to do the whole. Kid genius shtick.
i think I’ll stop there before I. go off too much KANDKD
Tysm for letting me ramble! It means a lot ^^

because your smile still remains
Also on AO3!
A/N: This fic is a commission for FabHawk, who wanted Haruka interacting with his father post-Summertime Record. Please note that I play pretty fast and loose with canon, which is to say that everything except the songs is basically “guidelines” to me, but this takes place in a timeline that’s basically “the music timeline except everyone lives at the end like in the anime because I like Ayano.” Haruka’s dad doesn’t have a canon name, so I gave him one for convenience.
Title is from Will Stetson’s English translyrics for “Remind Blue.” Thanks to FabHawk for beta-ing her own goshdarn commission because that’s just how awesome she is.
Warnings in the end note!
because your smile still remains
Loving a terminally ill person was a balance of hope and realism. Hiroshi learned that with his wife and relearning it with his child was like having his heart ripped out all over again. At first, it was easy to believe that his child might beat the odds, might survive what his mother didn’t, but eventually, Hiroshi had to be realistic.
So, while he kept pressuring the doctor for more treatments and looked for other doctors with new ideas…he’d also had Haruka write up a will. Haruka had, of course, smiled through the whole thing, even while Hiroshi tried not to cry in front of a stranger.
He’d trusted Haruka with information about his own health all those years ago because he thought knowing might…help. He sometimes wondered if that was a mistake. It was so easy to overthink and second-guess, when your time with a person you loved was running out.
Then, on August 15th, Haruka went missing, and suddenly, everything turned inside out.
When your child was missing, Hiroshi learned, you never knew for sure if they were dead or alive. You always had an image of them out there, somewhere, unchanged from the last time you saw them, living a life without you. You also had an image of them dead by a roadside somewhere. You never knew which image was correct, and it kept you up at night.
Hiroshi knew that Haruka couldn’t have lasted more than a week without his medications. Some part of him still screamed that his child might be out there, somewhere, waiting for his dad to rescue him.
In the end, he waited a month to hold a funeral, but he did hold it. It was a small affair, mostly family and a few people from the hospital. None of Haruka’s friends came—one had gone missing along with him, and another had killed herself on the same day. The last one still alive had shut himself up in his house and was refusing calls. According to his sister, he wouldn’t even open the boxes of light novels and manga that Haruka had willed to him.
On one level, Hiroshi understood. On another, he was incredibly frustrated. Didn’t his incredible, selfless son deserve this much? One friend, at his funeral?
He tried not to be bitter. He tried to reach out to Kisaragi, but all he got were increasingly embarrassed responses from his younger sister. Eventually, he gave up.
He threw himself into his work, tried to move on, became the kind of distant, weird researcher Aoi and Haruka often accused him of being. He wrecked a good half of his friendships and didn’t talk to his co-workers outside of job-related matters for months. But he’d done this before, when Aoi died, and his oldest friends knew what was coming. They waited him out and were there for him when he finally broke.
After two years passed, he could honestly say that he was…not okay. Okay wasn’t the right word. He’d lost a spouse and a son and that was more than one person should have to bear in a lifetime. But he was moving forward again.
And then the world turned inside out on him once again.
It was two weeks after the anniversary of Haruka’s disappearance. This year was better than last—instead of spending the day working, he’d gone for a grave visit with old Mrs. Enomoto. They’d thought about inviting Dr. Tateyama, too, but Hiroshi was still a little angry that he hadn’t come to Haruka’s funeral, and anyhow Mrs. Enomoto’s calls to him never went through properly.
By now, the grief was more like an ache than an open wound. He could look at the reminders of how his home used to belong to three people instead of one and think “This place is really too big for me,” instead of just starting to cry.
He still wasn’t that much of a social butterfly, though, so he was surprised to hear d a knock on the door around 6:30 pm.
He always had regretted not having a peephole in the door. He’d wanted to install one, once, but both Aoi and Haruka had told him he wasn’t good enough at DIY, and he’d never bothered having a workman over to put one in. So, in the end, he had to open the door and hope that whoever was knocking wasn’t a murderer or a door-to-door salesperson.
It…was not.
Hiroshi blinked. Then tried, again, to make sense of what he was seeing.
There were two teenagers in the doorway, one seated in a hospital-issue wheelchair and one standing behind him. The one who was standing looked somewhat familiar, although Hiroshi couldn’t quite place him. But the one sitting in the wheelchair…
His hair was grey, and there was an odd pattern on his face that looked almost like a tattoo. He was thinner than Hiroshi remembered. But in every other way possible, this person looked exactly like Haruka.
“Hi, Dad,” he said, and it was Haruka’s voice, too.
Hiroshi didn’t understand.
This couldn’t be real. He’d had dreams like this, of course, but there was no way...even if Haruka had been kidnapped, even if the kidnappers had meant to keep him alive….
The doctors had given Haruka  a year to live a little under two years ago.
“I don’t understand,” he said aloud.
His voice was probably shaking. He wasn’t sure anymore.
“Yeah, join the club,” said the other teenager. Thin, dark-eyed, wearing a bright red jersey--it took Hiroshi a while to place him.
“Kisaragi?” he managed.
“Yeah,” Kisaragi said. “And this really is Haruka. Things have gotten...weird. Can we come in?”
Too stunned to do otherwise, Hiroshi stepped aside and motioned for them to come in.
“Why wouldn’t it be me?” Haruka asked, all innocent curiosity.
“We had a funeral, moron,” Kisaragi said. “And you were...sick.”
“Oh, yeah,” Haruka said. “I...kind of remember? It’s blurry.”
“That’s fine,” Kisaragi said. “You don’t have to remember everything.”
“You...what?” Hiroshi asked, shutting the door behind them as he scrambled to keep up.
Kisaragi slipped off his shoes at the genkan. “Haruka’s memory is a mess,” he said.
Haruka himself was also wearing shoes, which he took off and passed to Kisaragi. “Yeah, uh, it’s a long story.”
“What happened?” Hiroshi asked.
Kisaragi gave him a careful look. “Why don’t we sit down for this?”
They settled in the living room—Haruka still in his wheelchair, wedged awkwardly next to Kisaragi on the recliner, as Hiroshi took the couch.
“So, uh, how well did you know Tateyama Kenjirou?” Kisaragi asked.
“He never returned our calls,” Hiroshi said. “I don’t think I’ve seen him since, uh—” He blinked, realizing. “Haruka, Dr. Tateyama’s daughter—”
“She’s fine, too,” Kisaragi interrupted. “He faked her suicide.”
“He—what?”
“And kidnapped me,” Haruka added. “And Takane.”
Hiroshi was on his feet before he realized it. “No, seriously, what?”
Haruka blinked at him, wide-eyed.
“All this time—two years—you were right here—” Hiroshi probably sounded hysterical. He didn’t care.
Haruka held up his hands. “He had us in, uh—Shintarou, what’s the word—”
“Medically induced coma.”
“Yeah, that! He wasn’t hurting us!”
Something in Hiroshi’s chest loosened, even as he heard his voice rise in pitch. “He still let us think you were dead!”
“Yeah,” Haruka said, quiet. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize,” Hiroshi said. “It wasn’t your fault, so don’t apologize.”
He crossed the room, then leaned down to wrap his arms around his son. To his surprise, Haruka stood, meeting him halfway and squeezing him tightly enough to ache.
After a few seconds, Hiroshi gently lowered him back toward the chair, then released the embrace.
“So, the wheelchair is until you finish up PT from the coma?” he asked.
“Actually, the doctors think I should keep using one,” Haruka said.
“The doctors don’t really know what Dr. Tateyama was doing, but whatever it was, Haruka’s heart is doing better,” Kisaragi put in. “They suggested that he avoid basically any strain and they wanted access to his full medical records, but they sounded a lot more optimistic about his, uh, outlook than they were before.”
“So, Tateyama stole my son for two years and fixed his heart problem?” Hiroshi asked numbly.
“Maybe?” Kisaragi said. “I think they wanted to run more tests.”
“Do you think whatever he did is also what changed your hair color?” Hiroshi asked.
Kisaragi and Haruka exchanged a look. Hiroshi was pretty sure that meant ‘it was actually hair dye but we don’t want Haruka’s dad mad at us.’
“So, do the police have Tateyama in custody?” Hiroshi asked.
“About that!” Haruka said. “He’s, uh—he’s—”
“He’s dead,” Kisaragi said. “He did something stupid, he died, and it wasn’t any of our faults, but we don’t have evidence of that, so we’d really like it if you didn’t get the police involved.”
“Who’s this ‘we’?” Hiroshi asked.
“Me, my sister, Haruka, Takane, Ayano, Ayano’s 12-year-old aunt, her newly-traumatized friend, Ayano’s siblings, and their friend who lives in the woods,” Kisaragi said. “I think that’s everyone. Haruka, is that everyone?”
“I have memory problems; you have a perfect memory,” Haruka said. “Why are you asking me?”
“Mean,” Kisaragi complained.
“Why were all of you involved?” Hiroshi asked.
“There were several more attempted kidnappings,” Kisaragi said. “Some attempted murder thrown in for flavor. It was a fun two days. If I think about them more, I’ll have to have a panic attack in your bathroom and I’d really rather not.”
Hiroshi glanced at Haruka, whose expression was completely serious. Not exaggerating, then.
“Okay, fine,” Hiroshi said. “I, uh, Haruka, your bedroom—”
“I know, you followed the will,” Haruka said. “And I doubt you’ve had time to clean it regularly. It’s fine. It’s been…rough, after everything. I miss you, but I also don’t wanna leave the others alone. So, I’ve been staying with Ayano and Shintarou and Takane at their house, for now.”
“You’re still welcome to come home if you want,” Hiroshi said. “Your room won’t be ready right away, but I can have it cleaned up pretty soon.”
“I’d like that,” Haruka said. “I want to stay over sometimes. But I’m 18, you know! And I have a lot to figure out, now.”
Yes, yes he did. A whole life ahead of him, even, if those doctors were correct in their assessments.
“Still, I’ve missed you,” Hiroshi said. “I want to see as much of you as I can.”
“You can always visit us, too,” Kisaragi said.
Both of them looked at him in surprise.
Kisaragi flushed. “Well, he can,” he said. “I’m sure the others won’t mind, if we ask.”
“Kano probably will,” Haruka said.
“Kano can kiss my—” Kisaragi broke off. “And Ayano can handle him, anyhow.”
Hiroshi smiled. “I’ll take you up on that, I think. But in the meantime, can you stay awhile tonight?”
“Yeah,” Haruka said. “The others won’t expect us back until later.”
“You haven’t had dinner yet, have you?” Hiroshi asked, already knowing how his son would answer.
“What does it matter?” Haruka asked. “You know I’m always hungry. What are you making?”
Hiroshi got up to look through the fridge and revelled in the opportunity to cook for his son again. There was still a tiny part of him that thought this might be a dream, and he still had so many questions. But he could savor this, without letting himself doubt or worry, just for now.
A/N: Warnings for discussion of terminal illness, end-of-life preparations, child death, kidnapping, and comas, as well as mentions of suicide and murder. Also, the narrator briefly believes himself to be hallucinating.
Yes, I know there’s some debate about how old Haruka is. In my fics, he’s 18, because I decided he was. Similarly, my characterization of Haruka’s dad does not necessarily cleave perfectly to the LN, because I don’t do well with discussion of terminal illness (yes I realize the irony, I can handle writing it but it’s a pretty hard squick for me in media) so I didn’t reread the relevant LN portions and mostly used the wiki.
For anyone curious, Hiroshi’s name is written (天 ) and means “sky” or “heavens.” I chose it to fit Haruka’s association with sky motifs and to be alliterative with his name.
Finally, yes, Haruka uses a wheelchair, yes, he can stand; ambulatory wheelchair users exist and given Haruka’s canon health situation it’s my headcanon that he can stand and walk short distances.
If you, too, would like to commission a thing, 8 slots have been filled, so there’s still time! The post is here!
Thank you for reading!
