Day 92: What have you learned just from attending your school
All the things I was passionate about I remember like yesterday; all the things I didn't care much about, I don't. Some of my favorite memories of my life were reading poetry assignments in a field at the foot of my very hilly college campus, facing a mountain. Some of my favorite literature was from school. All of my production knowledge, audio and video editing. Writing, academic and creative. Hell, I even enjoyed math once I got the hang of it (basic math, nothing crazy.)
But most of the things I loved and retained were from college—both community college and away-college. I think the college education system is so much more of a conducive learning environment than grade school. After college, I always had the thought that if I ever have kids, I'm gonna make sure they know that their marks in grade school really don't determine their worth (so long as they pass on-time, learn the basics, and get the diploma, I won't be bothered.) I just want them to learn and find what they're passionate about. College is where stuff really matters—I really want to pass on the knowledge that no one has to go to Harvard to learn. I went to a state college and had the time of my life. I loved learning there so much that I genuinely miss being in a classroom. It didn't matter the topic, really. The way everything was taught was so engaging—I want everyone to feel that way about learning. I learned so much about people and life and love and friendship, hell, even my life's purpose! Or, one of them, I suppose (trying to find the new one..)
All this to say that college is rad and learning is rad and getting to go to college is an experience that everyone should have.

I finally finished the second chapter of this doodle comic!
Basically from a translation machine:
It's called notes, but it's really bullshit time:
(I didn't put any asterisks in the "text" in order to make the picture cleaner and not make this little comic seem too serious)
①WX says that their body "doesn't have any of those really advanced things" and that "the concept is just bionic", which might make you wonder how WX can agree with their own shortcomings when they are always been so confident in their own machine body. This is kind of a guess: WX's comments in the wiki about Wagstaff being "afraid of progress" and "short-sighted", combined with WX's usual machine-worshiping and violent tendencies, such as their comments about Maxwell "He has that kind of power but he doesn't go out and destroy human". So it's an offense to them, but they actually agree that even though they claim to be superior, I guess WX would like to see their bodies more advanced and even more radical.
② Yes, this WX has acceleration circuits installed.
③ Gnome get✓ Do you guys remember the line where WX checks the Gnome
④ "You're not as kind as you look", how should I put this one, because the Wilson I understand is more or less with a little bit of darkness in his mind, he's someone who is full of emotions but often restrains them with reason, he fears and hates the negative impulses and instincts within himself. And this trait I think probably comes from his good nature, his education and survival experiences and the influence of the Shadow Throne. (But honestly after suffering in CONSTANT for so long, it's normal for whoever it is to be a little psychologically unhinged, not to mention the SANITY setting.) And after WX's soulwalking, they easily have some "psychic empathy" with Wilson... ...... Well, how did that happen Wilson?
⑤ Well I know the reasoning of the empathy module episode is weird ...... In fact, it's mainly because when I drew this plot I didn't have a good understanding of the empathy module, and simply thought of it as something like "emotional deficiency", so this episode was supposed to be Wilson saying "why do I still feel emotional ups and downs blabla" and then WX explaining that it's because of "memories of emotional experiences", which would have made a lot more sense.
⑥I guess it's my own personal setting: although the game doesn't make a distinction, I don't think WX as a robot would have a "headache and blurred vision due to lack of sanity". The system will be affected, sure, but the physiology won't necessarily feel it. It's hard to go from luxury to frugality, and since there is no experience in the eternal realm in the human era, WX can't adapt to the negative impacts of sanity reduction at all.
⑦Wilson's curiosity and desire to explore and then equipped with WX's hardware strength is simply ON FIRE. and "adapting to the human body so quickly" this conclusion mainly comes from the last chapter when the two people just transformed the body, Wilson's side is very difficult, while the WX on the contrary, it seems to be very easy. Even when they suddenly possessed internal organs, blood, light weight and so on, there was no adverse reaction. Wilson, who loves to observe, has always had suspicions (sorry however I didn't draw this clue out)
⑧ on the one hand, just learned a shocking secret, excited and energetic Wilson, on the other hand is the history of the exposure, and is also experiencing unprecedented headache WX. so the two temperament is not quite the same as usual.
⑨ "Wiped of most of their human memories" from the game's credits: "Suddenly recalling the memories of his past life, WX-78 soon decides to change his fate on his own."
⑩ Those of you who have fought Shadow creatures online might know that the only way a teammate's Shadow creature will have hatred for you is if you've forcibly attacked them. What happened here is that WX forced an attack on Wilson's Shadow Creature (except that Wilson was still relying on his headache of empirical judgment and didn't realize that his SANITY was too low), and then WX's own shadow creatures that were looming all showed up as well, which is why it became so much more. I don't have a very comprehensive understanding of this mechanic online though, and it doesn't seem to be very rigorous, so that's probably what it is anyway.
I accidentally added a lot more, mainly because of the limited ability to express the drawing ... Hope you enjoy!

Hey Dook, I really hope the upcoming year brings you nothing but good vibes and a perfect harmony in your awesome art! Your new pieces always make my day, seriously. You're such an inspiration, so dang talented.
Quick question for you: I often find myself stuck when I try to draw in my free time. How do you always come up with such cool ideas? Share your secrets on finding inspiration and drawing as expressively as you do, please!
(´。• ω •。`) Ah, you're so kind. Thank you for the good wishes. I wish you an awesome upcoming year as well.
Tumblr media
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
That's a good question! It's relevant for many fellow artists out there.
SUMMARY: Mix: your passion, your favs, a theme, portfolio and art goals. Power up with your references collection.
In details ⤵️
For me, stumbling onto those bright ideas that really click, started with digging into who I am and what I love.
It's mainly about recognizing the roadblocks and figuring out a fix that fits you. And it's like having a chill heart-to-heart with yourself:
you: I'm stuck. Can't figure out what to draw! mind: Okay. What is your main objective? Work or hobby? you: Feeling a bit rusty. Maybe I should start with something personal, you know, for practice. mind: Got it. First things first, let's jot down your favorite things. Got a list handy? you: Uh, not really. They're all up in my head. mind: No biggie. We can roll with that. It might spark some inspiration. But hey, to spice it up, let's create a visual board of you as an artist. Your focus, your style, your values — everything. Think of it like a moodboard. you: Sounds kinda complex. I just wanted to doodle in my downtime. mind: Trust me, this won't eat up much of your time. It's a breeze, and the result might just be the secret sauce for your future drawings. Start a bit now, pick it up later.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I, actually, aided it further.
All my ideas that wake me up or keep boiling in my head, I write into digital lists (in my case is TickTick app). Because when I see something inspiring (or someone) I can attach a link where needed, or add a custom note with markdown available.
Tumblr media
Then I began to fill up my reference folders. I work on them from time to time with a timer (20-30 mins). In my case, when I focus on character design, I have a collection of styles I want to try (including art from my favorite games cuz sure I want to learn how pro artists do it), coloring and drawing tutorials, educational (anatomy and all that), poses/faces/expressions, fashion, etc. *can be on your device, online drive, or a platform like Pinterest. Each set is not enough on its own. To make it work - combine things. Example: pick a pose, add a face to it, choose something trendy and fashionable, add your favorite colors/items/theme, throw some VFX. Mix and mash, don't be afraid to combine incompatible.
By establishing my priorities, I made lists (yet again, my obsession) of what I want to practice and then added each category in a randomizator to pick for me 3 elements to match and challenge. Here is my approximate plan (WIP). Random color generator (one of many out there)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I trained myself not to take too broad themes and stick to what I want to have in my portfolio (what drives my future commissions) while staying versatile. Takes practice.
I hope it helps somehow. It's something that works for me these days but might change in the future.
Find your own way because no one knows you like you do, so the most comfortable way to resolve an issue is the one that's crafted by you. Believe, your mind can find shortcuts and tips for you if tasked to do so. Don't forget to research and store.

Hi!! I saw that ur punk and I had questions if that’s okay!!! Im p sure I heavily align w punk ideology (and have already been cpunk for a while) (I strongly don’t want to conform to society and love all “weirdos”, fuck cops capitalism etc etc,,,) but I don’t listen to punk music or dress punk at all. I know u don’t have to dress any certain way (feel like ppl r gonna call me fake though) but people say u need to listen to punk music and I’m going to try !! but I’m very new and haven’t started yet.. when exactly is it okay to call myself punk? and umm while I do align with ideology I actually am very uneducated on anarchy and maybe similar concepts that I’m very interested in learning about but have no idea where.. can u give me any info on what being punk is really about and where to learn more? some people say there are “posers”’ but what exactly would make someone a poser?
hello! not a problem, i'm happy to tell you what i can :) (also ayy, fellow cpunk)
i would say that you can call yourself a punk when you're educated on the politics and ideology and can say for certain what parts you align with. being punk isn't about the aesthetic, it's about the ideology, so making sure you understand said ideology is the most important step.
that said, while punk ideology is generally left-leaning and anti-establishment, it's a massive umbrella that covers tons of different political beliefs. i personally am an anarchopunk, which is very left-leaning and centered around community instead of authority, but is directly against the beliefs of other subgroups like neo-nazi skinheads or national front which have both co-opted a lot of punk culture for its anti-establishment beliefs. there is no single set of punk beliefs, so it's important to do your research before adopting the label.
some places i would look to in order to learn more: classic punk literature (https://www.popmatters.com/punk-literature-101-recommended-readings is a great list of some places to start), and punk arts such as poetry, music, and zines, and punk history. dcdig.dclibrary.org has some fantastic collections that cover some of the history and politics that have influenced punk culture (i would very much recommend their DC Punk Archive Zine Library). in particular i'd look at the queer and BIPOC historical influences on punk culture, because those tend to get left out and knowing about that history is very important.
as for what makes someone a poser: posers in the punk community are typically people who embrace punk aesthetics but are uneducated on punk politics. they want the social recognition of the label but have nothing to contribute when it comes to their ideology. they tend to flock to places like tiktok where they can get that social recognition without having to talk about their beliefs. they also tend to gatekeep the punk community a lot. posers are not punk.
some red flags that a person might be a poser: they gatekeep the punk community, they don't talk about their beliefs and/or get irritated when people ask them about their beliefs, their punk fits are bought from amazon or other large corporations instead of being handmade or from small/punk owned businesses (it's pretty hard to tell from just looking though), they shame people for not listening to specific music or not "looking punk enough", they happily promote unnecessary violence because it's "edgy", they hate on everyone who doesn't agree with them, etcetera.
and in regard to your follow-up question about whether one can be emo/goth/nerd etc and punk at the same time, you absolutely can! these subcultures tend to overlap pretty often, and there's really no actual rules about what makes or breaks a punk identity other than being educated and honest about the labels you use.
i hope this helps, and good luck! :))

Pluto in houses
What you need to know and to let go if you want to move forward and improve your manifestations
Pluto in 1st House: You need to stop worrying about your physical appearance and how others perceive you. There will always be people to judge you but the most important thing is how you perceive yourself and what you have to bring to the world. So change the importance you put on others' opinion. Be your own role-model. Yes, your life is made of ups and downs, you have to face difficult events but don’t you realise how much you have grown after them? You have a big impact on others and you’re the one deciding how to handle your power. Stay true to yourself, rely on yourself, love yourself and be self-sufficient because at the end of the day when people are judging you, you’re the only one knowing what you’re actually facing.
Pluto in 2nd House: Let go of the importance you put on material possessions. You have value no matter what you physically have. If you want to feel secured, build your own internal empire. Money can contribute to your happiness but it will never create it if you don't evolve in your vision about life. Remember that money can leave as fast as it comes so don’t rely on this to measure your value. You deserve love, serenity, comfort and happiness no matter your income and your possessions. You're whole by simply being yourself. If you want to make money, make sure to do it in a honest way. Don’t use it to overpower others, but to help them. Your education contributed to who you are today but you can still evolve and grow into the best version of yourself.
Pluto in 3rd House: Accept that you have a different way of thinking and a different vision about life. Don't try to change your approach of life to fit in. Dark thoughts are part of human nature, but instead of letting them consume you, use them to your advantages. Don't try to be like someone else, especially your relatives and your siblings. Accept that your opinions can be different than the ones from people you respect. Rather than doubting yourself and obsessing over particular thoughts, think about how you can share them and take notes on how everyone thinks and feels differently. Isn’t the uniqueness of humans beautiful? Learn how to make your ideas evolve and grow them. When you learn something new and get new interests, you do it wholeheartedly so keep it that way.
Pluto in 4th House: What have been done have to stay in the past. So don't overthink all these past memories because even the worst ones taught you life lessons. Don't wait for your family approval to do what you desire. Live in the present-time and cherish what you've learned and who you became. If you don't want to follow your ancestors' path, it's up to you to create your own path. Nothing is set in stone. When you’re doubting yourself and doing something you regret instantly, think about this question: will this action have an impact on my life in 5 years? You have transformative experiences with your family or within your home, so if you feel trapped know that you can create your own family with the people you cherish and establish a peaceful homeplace for yourself. The best home is within yourself.
Pluto in 5th House: Yes, pleasure is essential but obsessing over it won't improve your life on the long run. Accept that you have strong values and tastes, just enjoy life in your own way. If flirting without going further is what feels right to you on the moment, it's okay, but understand why you act this way and what makes you unwilling to commit or do certain things. Your hobbies have a significative impact on your well-being. Beware of overindulging on things that might feel right to you. Don’t seek attention because you need attention, instead do good actions that you will be remembered for. Why would you need others’ approval to be fulfilled? Also, pregnancy might be frightening to you but do you wonder what do you fear it that much? In any case, it’s okay not to want children, giving birth isn’t an end in itself.
Pluto in 6th House: Get rid of your bad habits and don't let your surroundings dictate how you should live. Accept that you may not have the job or the daily life that you desire right now, but know that you can change your life just by reviewing your plans and working-hard. Your health might have ups and downs but if you know how your body reacts and how to handle it, you will take things more easily. Know that our body reacts externally when we don't listen to our internal feelings and repress them. So find a healthy way to release yourself whenever you’re feeling anxious, upset, stress... Don’t become obsess over your diet, food is the fuel to your body and your mind. Redefine your priorities and be aware of your strengths and weaknesses if you want to move forward.
Pluto in 7th House: We all have a shadow-side that we're unaware of but others can see. That's why some people seem to bring out the worst or the best of us, but it's just a mirroring behavior. Accept that your relationships aren't made of rainbows and butterflies but you can decide to learn beautiful lessons from them or not. You don't need to depend on someone to mean something to the world. You're whole, you're unique, so grow into your power. Equity and justice matter to you but what would you be capable of for keeping harmony? Learn how to say no. You don’t have to bring a relationship to the next level if you don’t feel like to. Listen to your gut, know what you want or not, and what you deserve. On a flip side, know that it’s okay to rely on someone from time to time, it doesn’t make you weak.
Pluto in 8th House: You lived transformative experiences which changed your perceptions, maybe you would have preferred not going through them but still, they were necessary to your growth. Nothing appears by pure chance. Death is part of life, it's a circle so don't worry too much about it and live your life to the fullest. Don't let intrusive thoughts and feelings consume you. You have so much power, it might be frightening but learn how to use it in the healthiest way possible. Sexuality might scare you or fascinate you, in both cases learn what it means to you. You know so many things that much people are afraid or unaware of, secrets and taboos are part of your growth experience so don’t run away from them because they will be part of your life whether you want it or not.
Pluto in 9th House: Your degrees and your knowledges don't define who you are so learn for your own pleasure. Instead of trying to impress others, teach them your knowledges and share your life philosophy. Adventures and travels make you grow into a different person and you need mental stimulation to be fulfilled but have you reach your internal kingdom? You have lots of resources within your own body and mind so make an internal travel and you will find beautiful and magical parts of your soul. Be interested in others and what they have to share, it will transform your perceptions. You gain wisdom thanks to life experiences, knowledges, awareness and relationships so focus on these matters if you want to extend your philosophy on a whole new level.
Pluto in 10th House: It's okay to not know what you want to do or who you want to become. You have a whole life to discover new things and build your image. But know that your reputation isn't set in stone, everything can fall apart so don't put all your energy on something you cannot control. You don't need to control others to be powerful. There's no failure: there's victory or lessons so don't be too harsh on yourself and take a break in your activities if you need to. Use your power to achieve your goal with mercy and goodwill. Learn to take risks, your hard-work won’t always have the outcome you were expected but it can bring you things you didn’t even imagine. Is it worth it to become obsess with work to the point of putting your health, people you cherish and your happiness aside? Reconsider your goals and what they mean to you.
Pluto in 11th House: It's good to be independent but know that it's also okay to rely on someone from time to time. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Social events might have a big impact on you but select what truly matters to you or not. All your friends and people around you won’t betray you if you already had a bad experience with someone, therefore learn how to trust. You have a big influence on others so take advantage of it by being altruistic and kind, because putting a smile on someone's face is a beautiful reward. Keep hoping with a more light-hearted approach of the future while you're getting closer to your goal. You’re a social butterfly who needs space and it’s okay, you don’t have to save the world to be appreciated, just stay true to yourself and your values.
Pluto in 12th House: You have a rich inner world so use it to your advantage rather than feeling trapped. Your sensibility is a gift, whether you realise it or not. Daydreaming is a great way to escape from reality but what if you put your dreams into reality? Live your dreams rather than dreaming your life. What is the best way to fulfil your dreams? You understand others on a whole another level without trying but did you try to understand yourself first? Don't be ashamed of who you are and what you like, your uniqueness is needed and will always be appreciated by some people. You don't need to be loud or on the front of the scene to make big achievements, silence is sometimes more successful. If spirituality is what makes you feel alive, keep going and don't care about what others might think.
Tell me if it resonated! I hope it helped you in some way, have a nice day lovelies ♡

do you have any advice on how to get better at backgrounds? I’ve always really loved how you do them (particularly ones in natural settings with lots of trees and foliage and whatnot—I remember being so impressed when you were posting wips of your hieron art for the f@tt pinup zine because you were painting individual leaves)
I struggle with them so much that they’re not fun, and I’m never motivated to practice because, well, they’re not fun 😅 I think my biggest problems are making characters look like they’re actually In An Environment, and knowing how much detail to include or leave out, and you seem to be really good at both those things. I would take literally any advice about any aspect of bg painting that you might have though, even if it’s just like. pointing me to a book or a youtube tutorial lol
i think... the most accessibly practical suggestion i have for putting bodies in environments is to draw in layers - as in, if part of a body is hidden? draw it. make sure you're accounting for every limb even when you can't see it, and while you're doing that, think about how something would feel rather than what it would look like.
i see a lot of advice that's "think about how it looks and not how it works" and maybe that is better for composition (i have NO art education, no qualifications to speak on that) - but i suggest thinking about how things feel, physically. you don't have to know about all the bones in a body, you just have to think about how it would feel to be in that environment and in that position.
i want to put a body at x angle, and it looks fine… but what's that hidden arm doing? does it have enough space to fit comfortably between those bodies or against that rock? could i hold my weight up like that? how long could i hold my weight up like that? if im trying to depict a relaxed scene, then thinking about how comfortable something is is essential - environmentally that includes … how many sticks are on the ground? sure the pose would work inside, but would there be rocks or sticks that suddenly make putting weight there painful? if yes then i need to either change the pose or set up the environment in a way that justifies it (and so i have to think, are they on moss (and if so then now i've got to set up an environment where thick moss might grow) or are they in a sheltered place that would have less fallen sticks (now i have to add overhangs or visibly cleared ground or or or)?
other than that.. trial and error. measure twice cut once? eyeball it and cut ten times and by the end of it you'll have a decent understanding of what range of measurements work and why.... i'm the artistic equivalent of those (bad) jokes about men never asking for directions, so unfortunately i don't have any easy resources (i'll google when i can't figure out how to get something to work in a program (and then inevitably learn that i've been doing things a roundabout hard way the whole time) but that's about it).. both while making the art and how i'm existing in space… if i hadn't put myself in so many uncomfortable situations i wouldn't know how painful it is to sit against a rigid curved surface, how likely i was to slide down a hill with x amount of leaves on it, etc etc)

believing in nonexistent things isn't culture stop glorifying it
awe, anon! you don't seem to exist because you don't wanna make yourself known, but i'll glorify you anyways because i'm getting a bit tired of the femboy jesus lecture i'm in right now (the bit gets old)
so like, in order to define something as nonexistent, you have to be omniscient— if you know everything then you know what isn't real and can claim it doesn't exist.
to further illustrate this, let's say i ask someone how many prongs are on a fork. most would say four. if i told someone who has never set a table or used a fork in their life but know the vague concept of forks (and that they have four prongs) that there are three-prong forks, they'll claim they don't exist (never seen it, not educated enough on the topic, incapable of claiming something exists or not since they don't know cutlery)
see what i mean? humans aren't omniscient, so making bold claims that something doesn't exist requires total understanding of the universe (you can't logic your way to a conclusion on where spirits exist or not because logic is human-generated and thus just as susceptible to the limitations of our perspective)
this... is where faith comes from! religions, spiritualities, cults, atheists, scientists, philosophers, etc... we're all just trying to find a way to explain the unexplainable. "proving" something is self-admittedly impossible, which is why we keep collecting data and evidence and keep generating conversations and denominations and more questions while changing the scope of our biased limited lenses into something greater and more encompassing of our universe as it expands and all of this is so incredible!!! humans LOVE learning!!!
i think it's quite beautiful that at the root of each person there's a natural curiosity. we say or do things to see what happens and how people react. we make art and study visuals to see the effects it makes. we analyze media and attempt to rationalize universes outside of our own because maybe we can't explain how OUR world works, but figuring out the nuances of sonic retcons and how they fit together MIGHT be doable, so we talk about our blorbos on this gay fuckin site and ultimately create twin worlds and aus and crossovers and expand our fandom-conversational universe akin to our own reality.
even as i write this, i'm genuinely curious about you anon. not just who you are, but what your backstory is, what forms your beliefs, why you're so passionate about this topic, and how come you don't want to be known? if there's nothing shameful or falsified in your submission, i think you should take pride in it and not hide behind an undetectable barrier or burner account.
you mentioned the glorification of the nonexistent, which begs the question: what do you think exists? there must be an objective correct answer that can FINALLY relieve humanity of the itch it needs to scratch with universals. tell us!!! i'm not being sarcastic, i want to see if you can provide a clear-cut, non-debatable model of reality so that this discussion that many people (including myself) are a part of can finally rest. and also to put a few of my shitty ex-philosophy profs out of a job because they're cunts and i want them out of the field 🥴
TLDR: make yourself known and join the discussion! i never claimed to be omniscient so my ideas are thoughts or prompts for further conversation are just another voice, and yet you've picked up the torch to illuminate the truth and provide us all with some catharsis. speak on, anon! but uh, turn anon off i want to actually engage with you on a personal level because these types of conversation staters are fascinating to me :")

Have you ever thought about how you would like to have the chance to have a career at Academy Sports? Well, today, you can! The company is opening a new campus in Madison, WI and giving kids the tools they need to be successful - all in one place!
The Importance of Work
The Academy Sports Campus in White Plains, New York is the perfect place for kids to learn the importance of work. Not only do they get an education from the Academy, but they also get the tools they need to be successful.
Since opening its doors in 2009, Academy Sports Campus has educated more than 4,000 children in grades K-12. The campus offers a variety of programs that teach children how to have positive attitudes at work and succeed both on and off the field. Students can choose from a wide range of classes such as business and marketing, sports training, and fitness instruction.
The campus provides students with the skills they need to be successful not only in their careers but also in life. The Academy's focus on work ethic will give kids the tools they need to achieve their goals no matter what they pursue.
The Power of Attitude
If you're like most parents, you want your children to have everything they could possibly want in life. But what if success wasn't something that had to be earned? What if it was something that could be simply accessed through the proper education and tools? That's the idea behind Academy Sports, a new campus that is set to open up in the near future and give kids access to the tools they need to be successful.
The Academy Sports campus is designed with the goal of helping kids learn about teamwork and how to become successful individuals. The campus will offer a variety of courses, including sports training, fitness instruction, and more. The campus will also feature a state-of-the-art gymnasium and an Olympic-sized pool.
This is a groundbreaking concept and one that is sure to help many kids in need. Not only will this campus provide them with the necessary resources to succeed, Academy Sports Near Me, but it will also teach them how to work as a team and build their confidence. It's exciting to think about the possibilities this has for kids all over the country and we can't wait to see what comes next from Academy Sports!
The Importance of Teamwork
When it comes to being successful in any sport, teamwork is key. That's why Academy Sports, a new campus that recently opened in the Tampa area, is so important. The academy offers kids the opportunity to learn from some of the best coaches in the business, as well as receive guidance and training in order to become successful athletes.
Aside from providing top-notch coaching and training, Academy Sports also emphasizes teamwork. That's because success in sports often comes down to how well everyone on the team works together. At Academy Sports, kids will have the opportunity to develop skills such as communication, coordination, and timing. In addition, they'll learn how to work as part of a unit and how to handle pressure.
All of this helps prepare kids for success in sports. And with Academy Sports' help, they're likely to achieve it.
List of Success Skills
1. Build Good Habits
2. Stay Organized
3. Be Persistent
4. Stay Focused
5. Develop Self-Discipline

All You’ve Got Is Gold Part 1
FandomAU!: Billy Delaney/Cormac McNamara x Female OC
Warnings: Slight NSFW, mostly steamy fluff.  Guys this ended up being long as fuck.  And it’s really only chapter one. Or Part 1.
Tumblr media
Jeanie leaned over the bar at Ewan's to pour herself another whiskey, ignoring the bartender as he chastised her. "C'mon lass, don't the wee ones file in to the grounds tomorrow?"
"Wee?" she gulped around her swallow. "Ewan, they're pubescent. You know me though, I like to have a bit of a glow every new semester. That way the parents think I'm truly invested in the well-being of the brats." Jean waved her glass around in the air. "Ok, not brats. Most of them are well-behaved and genuinely interested in learning. Not like the little bastards in America. I'd have 40 to a classroom back there. Saint Fergus barely has 40 students in the entire school."
Ewan took it as a sign and gave her a generous pour one more time, "Heard you cannae keep any professors for the pay. But your husband-"
"EX. As of last spring," Jean corrected.
"EX-husband found some new blood in a few of his University students."
"Aye," Jeanie imitated the Scottish brogue with perfection. "They're all in the corner over there with Dr Purves now."
She had half a decade to assimilate to the culture of the small, boring town just outside of Aberdeen where she followed Gordon and married him without any family or a job. He became head of the Physics and STEM department at the University of Aberdeen, working on projects and female students alike. Jeanie, having abandoned her Master's in Education, was really only qualified to student-teach at a local boarding school. Before long, lack of interest and the economy drove the numbers down to four or five dozen and a position of Headmistress open. At least it was a place to live and an existence that kept her mind off everything else.
"I would say don't look now, because here comes one of his students, but my darling who can keep their eyes off him." Ewan pointed behind his friend with damn near literal hearts in his eyes.
Jeanie glanced over her shoulder as a young man, early 20s? She couldn't tell. But he approached her at the bar. Her first glance became a double, and nearly a stare. Embarrassed, she whipped her head around quickly and blushed in Ewan's general direction. "Sweet Virgin Mary," she exhaled under her breath.
"I normally go by Delaney, but I suppose in certain company Mary will do," a soft Irish lilt.
Jean slow blinked as the bartender broke into a cheshire grin. She took a deep breath and turned towards the man now beside her and held out her hand. Blood pulsing in her ears because.. he was stunning. "Brave of a Celt to set foot in the land of Picts. Even braver for him to be in the presence of the biggest asshole in all of Scotland."
"Well from what I've heard she's more of an Ice Queen than an asshole," he squinted before smiling brightly. Green eyes sparkling in the low light of the bar. "Your.. partner put me up to it anyways. You know, say the bit about the ice. Sorry," he blushed but still held on to her hand firmly. "I've heard you're rather pleasant from the others. Just aloof as it were"
"EX!" Ewan and Jean exclaimed together, and the young man blinked responsively. "No sorries. Cold-hearted bitch is what some of the 6th years call me when I confiscate their illegals. Headmistress Jean Turner, but the two friends I have call me Jeanie. Drink?"
"Just one? I'll take 5. I have to catch up with the others." He hooked a thumb at the group of obnoxious men groping the female students who hung off of them as if they were celebrities. Taking what he was offered, chugging it quickly and shuddering. "Billy. Delaney it is. Well occasionally."
Jeanie and Ewan watched as he basically pounded every shot placed in front of them. Squinting off and on, as if he was trying to adjust to the ambiance. "Is it hot? It's hot in here. God I hate people. Those people. I will never fit in with the misogynists and knobs who prefer rugby and football to actually learning about the world." He pulled at the collar of his sweater before taking it off and draping it over Jeanie's chair. He wore a striped tee shirt underneath "Sorry. Sorry. I've got my nose in tech and books and maths algorithms most days. I forget how to socialize, so I really just want to blend in with the norms."
"You.. are.. fit." Ewan sputtered.
Billy snapped back to attention, his mind having drifted off to the same group Jeanie's eyes kept staring at. "What?"
"He's saying you are fucking fit, mate" Jeanie gaped.
"My body? I'm not really certain about that. I'm rather spindly wouldn't you say?” he shrugged while his cheeks flushed profusely. "My arms? Is it my arms? I swim. Clears my head from all the clutter." He was rambling now.
Jeanie and Ewan started laughing. "Relax! we're taking the piss, love. Your every move is being scrutinized. Now why abouts did Dr Purves send you over here? Surely he has fucking with me on his mind. Not unusual, humiliation has always been the name of the game."
Billy made a gesture that resembled adjusting non-existent glasses. He immediately dropped his hand and pulled a tenner out of his pocket. "To melt the ice, Gordon said. He gave me ten quid to hit on you."
"One of his students. What a lovely parting gift. I guess you're worth the loss of the house and the car," Jeanie stood back slightly to properly size him up.
Billy bit the entirety of his bottom lip, furrowing his brows, "I reckon you're worth more than a tenner to sleep with."
Jeanie blinked a few times, head tilted to the side to make sure she heard correctly. "SEX?!" she laughed, unable to help herself. "I don't exactly know what all of this," she waved her hand down his body, "would be doing even in the vicinity of sleeping with this," pointing to her own.
Confusion came over his face, "Am I supposed to be.. Is there something wrong with you that I don't notice? I, I can be kind of oblivious to loads. I think, really, Gordon goaded me into coming over here for my benefit as much as his amusement. I don't have too much experience, but you seem quite lovely you know. Your hair is," brows furrowed again but in thought, "Nicely red in this lighting. Reminds me of my friend from Ireland. Hannah."
Jeanie pinched the bridge of her nose as Ewan audibly guffawed from beside her. "Saints preserve us," the Scotsman said between gasps for air. "Donnae if you are taking the piss now, bloke, or are you really this bad at pulling birds."
Billy grimaced, the entirety of his face beet red. "Honestly, I never make it this far. I guess they usually pull me and I let them?" He started to fan his face, "seriously,,how fucking hot do you keep this pub?" His forehead bent forward to rest on the metal and wood counter of the bar.
Ewan covered his mouth and ruffled the curly head in front of him. "What a wee babby, Dr Purves sent into the lion's den. You just drank half a bottle of my best whiskey and mortified yourself in front of my favorite woman in this whole country. Maybe you ought to drink some water and have a sit for a few. We'll give you something to take to the bell-end in the back."
Jeanie and Ewan's eyes met, and she bit back a smile before leaning over to wrap an arm around her husband's latest protege. "Oh Ewan, I don't think it should be only a story. Why not give the evil genius a bit of a show. Right now he can see Mr Delaney is headed towards a spectacular crash. Im embarrassed. Mr Delaney's embarrassed. You're without very expensive whiskey. Gordon will never let anyone live this down for the semester."
She put her mouth near Billy's ear, "Ten quid is worth SOMETHING. Don't you think? Just look at me." He obliged quicker than she expected. Emerald eyes gazed upwards at her while the heart banged wildly in her chest. "What comes next?"
"I reckon I ought to put my arm on your waist. Right?" his voice now low in her ear and a hand slipped around her hips to draw her as close as possible.
No further guidance was needed as the liquid courage kicked in. Billy stood up and took Jeanie's face in his large hands before he drew her into a rather passionate kiss. Hers instinctively buried in his hair, their tongues dancing as the thought he hustled her entered the back of her mind. How was it that just a few minutes ago he looked ready to vomit at the thought of trying to come on to anyone, not just her. Now he was kissing her like they were Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. Jeanie’s back slightly arched as Billy dominated her personal space with his height, a hand dangerously on the curve of her backside.
Ewan held his own face, eyebrows lost in his bangs as he watched the two of them go at it for well, he lost time. Glancing up he noticed just about everyone else in the pub was watching too. Gordon positively green with envy and turning purple with anger. Ewan saw him lean to a colleague and mouth, "That wasn't the fucking deal."
"Job done you two," he cleared his throat and practically shouted to break them up.
Jeanie's mouth was cold as it kissed the air. Billy had stumbled backwards a bit, mouth turned down ever slightly in a whoops motion. He walked, swayed really and floated by every single patron, including the group of men he came in with earlier. Fingers pulled at his bottom lip before he passed a devilish grin over his shoulder in Gordon's direction.
Jeanie and Ewan gobsmacked, but pleasantly amused, looked at one another. Mischief in their eyes as Jeanie noticed Billy's sweater draped over the bar. "Mr Balderston, I think I have a grad student to visit this week. It seems Mr Delaney might need his sweater because the Scottish nights get awfully cold."
Orientation came and went, and the students seemed to settle in quicker than normal.  Quite possibly because this was the lowest attendance in the school’s 150 year history.  They had been in danger of shut down, but Jeanie was informed that first Monday by the Board of Directors that an anonymous group of donors had decided, against their wishes, to purchase the school.  Even if no students came back the following school year, or they were down to only 15 or 10 or 5, Saint Fergus would remain open for unknown reasons.
To say she was relieved was an understatement for Jeanie.  Much needed repairs were being made, and someone had come to put together a state of the art security system.  Which really confused the faculty and dwindling staff.  Who would steal anything from this junk heap?  Even their books were falling apart.  Except they weren’t.
By the end of the first week, the girls in their dormitories and in the hallways were abuzz with brand new Literature and Maths books.  They were suddenly interested in Oscar Wilde and Pythagoras.  Jeanie watched as three 4th years sat in the windowsill and audibly cracked open their copies of “The Happy Prince,” stars in their eyes.
“Have you ever seen anyone as good looking as Dr McNamara?  Honestly, I don’t know how I’ll pay attention to anything else but that voice,” she held her book against her chest.
“Oh c’mon Siobhan.  It’s all about the eyes.  I don’t think I’ve seen anything like them.  Proper green.  If he sticks around, I’ll tell Daddy to talk to all of his barrister friends. Get them to enroll their kids here next year.”
The third girl was clearly in a daydream out the window, “All I heard today was blah blah blah ‘important in oratory history of Ireland’ blah blah.  Lemme tell you, he can give me an oral exam any day.”
Jeanie cleared her throat and the students jumped nearly a mile high.  “It would do you girls a kindness not to sexually harass our newest teacher at Saint Fergus.”  The smallest hint of a smile on her lips.  “Honestly, how is it that I'm headmistress here and have no bloody clue who this mysterious Dr McNamara is?”
“Well rumor has it, Miss, that he bought the school.  Dr Purves hired him for a project at the uni, and he asked to be right in the thick of the school.”  Siobhan shrugged.
“What do you mean?”
“Oh he’s installing the security system and having a new science laboratory built,” the daydreaming girl chimed in.
“I thought it was a grad student that was teaching here this semester?  Have any of you heard the name Billy Delaney?  I’ve been looking for him the last week or so, but I can't find him in Aberdeen housing.  I’d like to return his sweater.”  Jeanie’s face flushed pink, and the girls all cast a knowing grin in her direction.
“Has Miss got a crush herself?” Siobhan teased.  “There’s no student teachers this year, but did you say Billy Delaney?”
“Yes.  Does that name sound familiar to you too?”
The girls stood and handed Jeanie paperback books one by one.  A stack of them, young adult novels that had grown incredibly popular the last few years.  A stone wall with a glowing green and gold light graced the cover.  “A Green Pool of Light: Emerald City to Oz  Book 1” blazed across the top in that standard stereotyped font that represented all things Irish.  The daydreaming girl, Aila Jeanie would come to find out, opened her copy and ran a finger down the page.  “Yeah, he’s like a gender bent Hermione in these books.”
Jeanie frowned and flipped through the pages.  The girls all started to laugh, not mean-hearted but in the way kids do at adults when they become lost in the world of anyone under 20.  “That’s Dr McNamara, Miss Turner, and he’s living in the Boys Dorms.”
Jeanie blinked a few times, too many times in disbelief.  The girls dissolved into hysterics and headed off to their next set of classes.  Things maybe just got a bit easier but harder at the same time.
--------------------------------------
Jeanie stared incredulously at herself in the mirror.  When exactly was the last time she showed up to any man’s room wearing only a coat and her underwear?  Or well, a sweater in this case.  She waited until the school was dark and quiet, she couldn’t risk one of the students seeing her dressed this way.  On her way to do a dance of seduction.  No, that’s humiliating.  This was all humiliating.
What in the hell am I  even doing? She thought.  But it was too late, her legs carried her into the halls and across the floors and up into the West Wing where the boys slept. Tip-toeing quick and stealthy to the only source of light on this side of the school.
Jeanie took a deep breath and knocked on the open door.  His back was to her, sitting with one foot up on the chair, a knee drawn up to his chest in the most awkward of positions.  His dark head was bent over an abundance of little digital boxes spread across a desk that he tinkered with under a magnifying glass.  Several computers and laptops spread around the room running codes attached to various projects simultaneously.  Lost in his work, he ignored her.
Sighing heavily, Jeanie knocked louder this time.  She raised one hand up the door frame, leaning in the most tempting pose she could muster at 11pm on a Thursday.  His head popped up, and he only glanced over his shoulder in her direction before going back to his work.
“Well took ye long enough to find me, Miss Turner.  Wanna see what I’ve put together for the school?”  he queried without paying any attention to her attire.
Jeanie felt the bile rise in her throat.  How in the hell was she ever going to feel better about herself when this man wouldn’t even acknowledge her?  Was it too late to just slip back down in the shadows and melt away like she never existed?  Still she took a breath and made her way to the desk and stopped directly behind him.  She bent forward over his shoulder, her hair brushed against his face and neck.  There was a nearly inaudible hitch in his breathing as she picked up one of the boxes.  Did she make him nervous?  Good, she thought and chewed her lip to prevent a smirk sneaking through.
“Well Mr Delaney.  Or is it McNamara?” She studied the box carefully and poked at it with her nail.
“Doctor” he interjected huskily.  He was nervous.  “I’ve got a PhD,” he corrected.
“Are you even old enough for a doctorate?!” she retorted.
“I’m 24, thank you very much.  I suppose that’s quite young to have several PhDs, but I don’t really keep track.  If it makes you feel better, I'm also a chef. Cooking is just science after all,” he said almost dismissively.    “Oh, That is L.I.S.A. you’re holding.  Large-scale Interface Security Application.”
Jeanie snorted; she couldn't help it.   “Do you mean an alarm system?”
“No it’s a specified security application that only I know how to program and,” he caught himself.  “Yes.  It’s an alarm system.”  He rolled his eyes and gently took the machine back from her and placed it amongst the others.
“If you're working with Gordon on some kind of secret project, why are you teaching Literature?” Jeanie launched into everything without really meaning to. “You know Dr Delaney or whoever the hell you are, several of the girls brought to my attention that there’s a character in those young adult novels written by Hannah O'Flaherty. “A Pool of Green Light?” They are quite popular with our 1st-4th years.  You're Billy Delaney aren't you?  That’s why you gave that name in the pub the other night instead of your real name.  That being Cormac McNamara, am I correct?”  She placed her hands on hips hidden in the mass of wool and cable knit.
"Delaney is part of my last name. Hyphenated.” once again correcting the headmistress.
"Don't see much of that in men"
"Well it and my brain are about all my parents left me,” he moved to face his chair towards Jeanie and abandon his project.
"Well I bet they're proud of you, Cormac. Or Billy.  Whatever.” she waved her hand dismissively.  “You lot discovered.. what's it called?"
"Dimensional Dark Matter Transport with the possibility of Inter and Temporal"
"I mean, Portals. Or to put it in tv nerd terms: Beam me up Scotty"
"Precisely!” Cormac exclaimed and stood up excitedly.  “And your ex-boyfriend-"
"Husband"
“Yes, husband.  Well couldn't have been good at it if he's your ex.” He bit a finger absently, staring off towards the ceiling.  Then snapped back to attention quickly,  “Well he wants to find a way to make it.. Portable. Not just in plotted locations around the globe. And my business partners, em Hannah and Brett if you will, would like it privatized. Dr Purves, he wants the highest bidder."
"Military?” Jeanie blanched at the thought.  Then her voice drifted off, “So the books ARE real.. You three are real.  Hannah hid the stories in plain sight for the entire world to discover"  And for the first time, she noticed a framed photo on the vast desk.  A trio of happy young people: red-headed girl, pretty with large blue eyes.  A floppy haired, tan surfer type.  And a tall, lanky boy with oval glasses and severely parted hair starting to curl.  Jeanie took the frame and traced her fingertip along the glass. “Sarah, Zack and Billy.  This is like finding out Harry, Ron and Hermione are living, breathing people.  And here you are, in my school.”
"I could show you if you want but.. Miss Turner, why are you only in a sweater?" Cormac stepped back and lifted his glasses and put them back down. He took them off hurriedly as if he was embarrassed to be wearing them.  Turning once more to face her "Is.. Is that MY sweater? You're only in. Jeanie, Where are your pants?"
"Well I planned on seducing you Mr.."
"Doctor" -
Jeanie sighed as if she had been defeated, "DOCTOR Delaney-McNamara"
"Well Ive mucked that up I suppose,” a deep crimson set across his ears.
" I mean you can have your sweater back,” Jeanie arched an eyebrow seductively. Pulling the sweater over her head to reveal only a pair of her nicest black panties and bra underneath.  Nothing else.
"Thank you it's quite my favorite-" Cormac’s eyes widened when he noticed the headmistress in front of him wearing nothing but lingerie.  He squinted briefly while scratching his head.  “Oh.. Jeanie. That’s..” his voice drifted off lost in shock.
Ignoring the embarrassment growing in her chest, Jeanie crossed her arms over her chest.  “Why in the hell did you take your glasses off?”
“Oh, em.. Hannah always tells me I’m far more attractive without them.” he shrugged.
“Just like how Clark Kent is only slightly, by a molecule,” Jeanie pinched her fingers together, “less sexy than Superman with his glasses"
"But his glasses are fake,” Cormac ignored the obvious joke.  “Right now I can just see shapes. Lovely, curved shapes! but only shapes." waving a hand in her general direction again.
Jeanie sat down on his bed without the sweater, to protect her now she just decided to go with her original plan. She crossed her long legs and leaned back with one hand back on the mattress. "Ok give us a look with the glasses on, Delaney.. Mcnamara?" This was frustrating.
"No, I reckon I'll have the kids call me Cormac" his hands on thin hips as he glanced upwards in thought
"Yes, erase that line of authority between yourself and 11-15 year olds. Don't underestimate them, Billy.  Or Cormac.  Or whatever.  You are probably the smartest professor Saint Fergus has ever had, but you’re handsome.  My girls will eat you alive"
"I wouldn't go that far!" he was exasperated for some reason.
"You have five PhDs and can’t even legally rent a car in America yet," Jeanie pointed out.
Cormac waved her off dismissively.  “No!  Not the smart or genius part.  That is true,” he agreed without pretension. “It’s the handsome part,” he rolled his eyes in frustration.
“Look McNamara, I can’t tell if you’re being humble or an asshole.  Your constant squinting and inflamed cheeks are ruining my perception.”
"Inflamed.." he touched his face  "It's rather distracting. You in your.  I may realize now that's your intent. I'm not really NEW to this, uh women coming on to me. It's just not always quite so forward?"
"Had I known you were a doctor of  Quantum Mechanics, my approach would be a little less intense. 10 quid or not, you were the one kissing me last night." Jeanie got up off the bed "Ill go, but can I take your sweater with me? The students don't need to see this"
"Oh, em do ya have to? You're already here, and I'm sure quite lovely to look at."
"Cormac put your glasses on"
"Really?" he was adorably confused "I would have to take them off if we-"
"Have sex?"
"I didn't mean to imply- I've never really-" he nervously put his glasses back on. Then started fiddling with his hands and chewing on one.
"No fucking way!” Jeanie sat up quickly “But you're-"
"Oh please don't say hot."
"Well-travelled?"
"I am not completely virginal, I'll have ye know! I've done tings. SEXY tings. I've put my mouth and fingers in places on a woman. I'm just picky about where I’d put my penis."
Jeanie’s amused now, she can’t help it. An eyebrow raised and a laugh ready to escape because he's pacing around and gesticulating wildly now. "Are.. are you getting more Irish?"
"MAYBE I AM!" he shouted louder than he meant to, then unexpectedly pulled his shirt over his head.
Jeanie laughed at the absurdity now. "Cormac. Or Billy, whatever you are more comfortable with." She kneeled on the bed coming to the edge of it. "We don't have to do this. I'm not asking you to justify your virginity; that your business. It’s a patriarchal construct anyways to make us feel like we have to engage in sexual activity.  Then when we do, we’re trash.  It’s a no-win situation for anyone. I LIKE you. We have all school year to get to know one another better."
“I think Dr Delaney-McNamara, but Cormac works just fine for you” his tone all at once softer and deeper.
There was a weird electricity in the air, which very well could have been the obscene amount of tech equipment in the small dorm room.  It could have also been that the atmosphere switched so fast from mortification to that moment your body knows something is going to happen.  Jeanie’s head began to swim when she realized the young man in front of her was unbuttoning his jeans to step out of them.
“Bloody hell...” was all she could utter before he wrapped her up in his arms.
Jeanie’s hand on Cormac’s hip and the other tangled in his hair as they found themselves in another kiss.  Mouths dancing together.  She sat back and pulled him down so that he was laying completely on top of her now.  His skin was hot almost like a sunburn.  Somewhere, in the back of her mind, Jeanie thought maybe a literal electricity had settled in him from using the portals so often all these years. Their tongues pushed back and forth, she realized his body began to feel similar to one of those static glass balls.  The kind you press your hand against and every single hair on your body raises?  It was strange and exhilarating and comical all at once.
The thought was fleeting though because Cormac’s lips made its way down Jeanie’s neck.  The breath caught in her throat as he bit softly before trailing to her chest.  His large hand gripped the flesh of her hip, snaking it around to grab at her backside before settling it between her thighs.  The other struggled to unhook her bra while in their current position, his annoyance eliciting a giggle.
Managing to roll them so that she was on top now, Jeanie deftly reached behind herself to finish the job.  Her breasts free, Cormac took one in his mouth.  His tongue was warm against her skin as he began to suck and lick at a nipple and the flesh around it.  Alternating between each hungrily, hand still lost in between her thighs.  A  finger began to trace the fabric of her panties.
Audible gasp now, as Jeanie fumbled to reciprocate any way she could.  Kissing his forehead?  or rocking her hips against his hand, she began to float outside of her body. What was she doing?  Trying to feel wanted after all of this time?  Maybe give the other adults something to gossip about over the weekend.  Attractive new professor, the benefactor of Saint Fergus, fucking the boss his first week in.  Jeanie was his boss, but also his subordinate?  Because Cormac, with Brett and Hannah, owned her livelihood now.
“What a fine mess we’re in, Delaney,” she managed amongst the new spate of kisses.
Ignoring Jeanie’s frank statement, Cormac took to nibbling her throat again. Exchanging now for harder bites, just enough to let her know he had the upper hand. Fingers deftly pumping rhythmically with the pulsating of her body. He found that part of her with ease. The button Gordon never could without neon arrows.
“I walked through an alien portal at sixteen and made one of the greatest scientific discoveries none of us can talk about,” That Irish lilt heavy in her ear. “A fine mess has been the last decade of my life, Ms. Turner.”
There was almost a reckless abandon as Jeanie unexpectedly came. She cried out; it echoed off the dorm walls briefly before Cormac clamped a hand over her mouth. Their eyes both wide before they lost themselves in a fit of giggles.
Lying beside each other now on the bed, Jeanie felt self-conscious while Cormac absently twirled a finger in her mass of red hair. She felt his green eyes staring as she traced the infinity symbol with the tip of a nail on his chest. Their breathing patterns quickly marched in time together.
“Not sure why I have a gut feeling your timidity was a fucking game,” Jeanie spoke without a hint of anger. More like curiosity.
“Only just a little. I am far more capable of handling people in small doses.  There's a  certain anxiety hanging around the average university student. I finished undergrad in a year and graduate school in another. Never really fit in with most people my age. I thrived in a boarding college like this one. Never more than 15 children a class. Miss Murphy let me do as I please because I kept mostly to myself, even when she and the others were strangely codependent on my brain.”
Cormac’s eyes still trained on Jeanie while he spoke. “I didn't mind. I DON'T mind. My tinkering and projects work bloody fantastic now!” he exclaimed with pride. Those long fingers combed through Jeanie's hair. His gaze became nostalgic, “I transferred my AI tech into the lab at Aberdeen.  There's my  personal version.  She's asleep right now,” he chuckled, gesturing towards the wall of monitors.
Jeanie grimaced, “She?!”
“Oh yes! SILVIA! I suppose she'll become LISA’s big sister.”
“You invented a primitive android.” her response was incredulous.
“No no. SILVIA was a lie detector I installed artificial intelligence in to play ch-..” Cormac caught himself. For the hundredth time that evening, “I suppose. Yes,” he tapped a finger against the soft dimple in his cheek.
“You suppose!” Jeanie reeled with laughter once more.
Cormac’s face flushed pink, “You know what I did to you was just basic anatomy that’s easily taught by reading a damn book. I reckon you'd be interested in what else reading has taught me about a woman's body.”
And so it began.

modern au red/milo dump while i try to get myself together to answer asks nd work on ATJ:
(tw for alcohol mentions near the end, also this is an EXTREMELY long post, its so long that even after i split it into categorized sections each section could be its own post)
CLOTHING
milo absolutely has no sense of fashion. i feel like this is basically canon - for the styles at the time, he dresses fairly basic, mostly focused on looking put together for his job (definitely dresses aimed more towards how he would like to be treated by his peers, despite his actual position - then again our best example outside of the expedition is when he's about to deliver what he considers the most important presentation of his life, so who knows, maybe he usually dresses like a slob). aside from that his main concern seems like practicality and comfort. his wardrobe is dominated by earth tones - beiges and greens set with white and greys. all of that taken into account, i can see him dressing like this in a more modern era:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
basically- a lot of cardigans, usually collared shirts or comfortable turtlenecks (since he does still occupy a research position at the smithsonian, even if only in title), big ol' coats, khakis and chinos and slightly stiff dress pants complete with ironed creases. i can see him wearing similar clothes outside work, just more comfortable - jeans and knitted shirts, henleys, more turtlenecks, and comfy cardigans over short sleeved shirts. i dont really see him wearing a lot of prints, i think he'd veer more towards solid clothes in lighter colors, but maybe he has a few. hes definitely the kind of guy to think of wearing the single graphic tee he owns as "bold and wild".
im very married to the idea of him wearing converse though. i cant explain it. milo in converse keeps me going in this world
hes kind of broke so i think maybe he got the converse secondhand maybe? or a gift of some kind. aside from the converse i can see him wearing a lot of oxfords and maybe wingtips
i want to see him in a hawaiian shirt so bad. i am losing it at this thought. he buttons it all the way up to his neck like someones awkward dad. milo wears a hawaiian shirt to "let loose". he wears it with like, khakis. or knee length jorts AHHHHDJHDSGJHDSJGh
a tie??? does he wear his hawaiian shirt with a tie???? does he think it makes it look cooler?????????? i am sobbing
red is the COMPLETE opposite. in the canon 1914 setting, red is already very rebellious for an AFAB person of their era- theyre openly a suffragette, they frequently refuse to wear skirts even in public and dress in mens clothes even before they were openly nonbinary, despite not being accepted into the male-dominated research fields and colleges they continue to educate themself with or without help, they purposely aim for an "unfeminine" silhouette when they dress, refuse to wear corsets, etc. (spoiler alert- there's a clear reason they get on so well with audrey in ATJ)
theyre also easily mistaken by people that didnt know them prior to their transition for being just a very small/young cis man- even though they canonically have a very soft "traditionally feminine" face
so basically, in any era theyre set into, red is always gonna aim to be ahead of the curve- both in their personal beliefs and practices and in their fashion. theyre also very androgynous in their clothes, although they tend to aim a bit more masculine (thats partially due to the era though, and having been forced into skirts exclusively for their entire life- i think in a modern setting where its more acceptable for AFABs to dress and act in a less hyperfeminine way, theyd be more okay with a fluidity in their gender presentation).
all that taken into account, i can see them dressing like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
lots of baggy clothes, especially baggy jackets and shirts. they like loose fitting high waisted pants like JNCO jeans, cargo pants, etc but they arent averse to pencil legs. they rarely ever wear skinny jeans or drainpipes though. messy hair is a lifestyle for them- their haircut is definitely home-done
you know how in BICSTLY they used to have really long hair before they cut it? in a modern au i can see them impulsively doing the cut at like 3am and waking milo up at his door cause they screwed it up and he ends up having to help fix it (even though hes literally no better at cutting hair than them. worse even)
definitely have an undercut bob- bob on top, shaven on the bottom layer. they might end up growing their hair into a mullet at some point if they get bored. probably dyes their hair all the time out of boredom and then regrets it later and has to use dye remover.
lots of ripped tights and fishnets, leggings with big loose crop tops, big hoodies, safety pin jewelry and homemade jewelry. maybe some sticknpokes.
all that said, they still know how to dress in a professional situation. since its a modern au theres really nothing holding them back from the education and career they canonically want but cant get in the 1910s, so i imagine they would work at the smithsonian as well, maybe their father helped them get the job? potentially in that case they might be his assistant- after all, he trusts their opinion on artifacts more than anyone else's.
at work you can still very much see the punk/skater/grunge/goth style but its more understated- turtlenecks, high waisted and looser dress pants, lots of black, slightly unbuttoned collared shirts with a loose overcoat and no tie
since i elaborated on milos shoe taste i may as well elaborate on red's: they definitely wear converse as well, probably newer than milo's since their father is fairly wealthy and they can afford it. they also have a doc martens collection. they have a pair of demonias but they never wear them and milo is really the only person to even know they own them, let alone see them in them. they really dont like to wear heels much, but they own a few just to play around with. they have a bad habit of wearing any laced shoes untied, but they never trip over the laces. they also use lace code- their most-worn Docs have purple laces on the right foot and yellow on the left. some of their Docs have (reclaimed) pink laces.
has an extensive pin collection including feminism pins, anti-racism pins, punk-related pins, skater-related pins, and pop culture pins (80s music, modern music, old movies, etc)
MUSIC TASTE
milo's into a lot of older music- stuff from the 50s is his favorite. really into jazz and ballroom style stuff. his favorite band is queen, i think- he likes the old-fashioned sound, the jazz-chamber-ballroom influences, the diversity of their lyrics, and the complexity between the guitar riffs, the basslines, and freddie's vocal runs as well as the vocal harmonies.
sometimes he hums good old fashioned lover boy to red and they two-step in the living room in their pajamas :pleading:
also very into rush. yes, he is a rush guy :pensive:.
also listens to a surprising amount of lo-fi? he really likes stuff that remixes older music with hip hop and lofi elements, like earl grey. nearly exclusively into instrumental stuff but also very into louie zong. he listens to it while he works a lot.
knows a lotttt of foreign artists, especially niche ones. fuckin LOVES casiopea
red's spotify is a goddamn mess. everything from 2000s emo, to classic 70s punk, to post-punk and new wave, to 90s pop, to rap. they cant be easily classified at all
their favorite bands are oingo boingo, prince, queen (they listen to a lot of their harder-rock music, but milo knows theyre into the ballads too. theyll never tell anyone else though), doja cat, lil nas, fall out boy, and billie eilish.
red recites the intro monologue to lets go crazy very seriously to make milo laugh, sometimes. they get very into it with their facial expressions. sometimes it devolves into a full air guitar/keyboard/drum and wild dancing session. milo does not know how to participate in this but he loves watching them have fun with it. sometimes they pull him off the couch to make him dance with them, though
they are a huge sucker for dark pop, vaporwave, retrowave, EDM, hip hop, emo, punk... etc etc. anything that combines any two or more of those genres in an original or interesting way gets their attention right away
there's a lot of sharing between the two of them- even though their music tastes are so different, they like a lot of the others taste, and theyre always up to listen to whatever their partner is playing.
red is a huge softie, and milo has found them more than once listening to or humming something he was playing for them the other day because it reminded them of him
speaking of which- in the 1914 canon, red can play piano. i think that carries over to a modern au, where they could play piano and by extension keyboard. i like to think they experiment with a lot of instruments but i doubt they ever really mastered any others. maybe theyre okay at drums or bass?
they learned to play and sing teo torriatte for milo, as a surprise. when they first performed it for them, they had everything set up for when he got home from work- the lights were dimmed, they had candles lit around the keyboard, they draped stuff in cloth to make it look pretty, they scattered flower petals around. when milo walked in and saw it all, he almost proposed then and there- the only thing that stopped him was that he would kick himself for the rest of his life if he did that without a ring.
HOBBIES/ACTIVITIES
milo is still an avid chess player in this, but i like to think hes in some kind of groupchat or text or discord server for it. he doesnt necessarily consider any of the others in the chat close friends, but he does know them all by name
he tries to get red into chess but they never really get it
he tells them all about the stuff that goes down in the games and they just. do not understand. but they love listening to him get excited about it anyway
"red you're not gonna BELIEVE this, eddie played an italian game on star today! i thought for sure she would see through it since everyone knows it but she slipped and he beat her in like, 13 moves! i wouldnt have believed it if i hadnt been there!"
"yes sweetie please tell me more" (barely disguised pained expression)
red is a skater and a regular at the skate park by the smithsonian
most regulars there know them by name, they can spot a newbie a mile away
they have a sticker of a broken tv with a skull inside of it on the underside of their board, its become recognized as a symbol of them unofficially
since theyre so regular and have been going there a lot longer than most of the other skaters that frequent the place, a lot of what they say is kind of just accepted as the rules
they have a bad habit of lecturing new kids who show up without knee/elbow pads or helmets at the very least. all the other skaters enforce it too. kids dont end up showing up without protective gear very often after their first visit
they brought a first aid kid and left it there and everyone has kept it stocked pretty well without them having to have much input. its kind of just a communal first aid kit
they once drew the broken tv symbol on the inside of a half-pipe and everyone started calling it red's ramp after that
they also started calling the bowl at the center of the park the Soup Bowl and now thats just accepted as the name. some of the newer kids genuinely thought that it was called that by the park and were shocked when they found out it was just a random nickname red gave it one day
theyve brought milo a few times but hes extremely awkward on his feet and could never really get his balance on a skateboard, and quite frankly red is afraid of what might happen if he tried even a low ramp, so he usually just sits at the rim of the bowl while red skates around
everyone knew he was their boyfriend before they even met him. a few of the regulars called him by name right away. one of them was certain red had brought him before.
but no
they just talk so fuckin much about him that its like they already know him
aside from skateboarding, red is pretty good on rollerskates/blades
they tried to take milo to a roller rink once but it was a disaster and they ended up going home, changing into pajamas, ordering chinese food, and marathoning movies till they fell asleep on the couch together. so not a total loss
theyre both very into movies. red is deep into horror and milo likes indie/art movies and just Cannot handle horror at all, but they both agree on old movies, from the 80s and 90s to like the 30s.
red has shown milo some of the classic horror movies and the niche old ones (from like the 40s) since theyre not difficult to stomach
every so often when red brings up wanting to see a horror movie milo is like "aw babe we can watch that tonight i promise it wont be bad" and he genuinely thinks he can handle it this time
he cant
he never can
it is always a lie
red ends up holding him every time and talking him to sleep, but it thankfully never causes like a major panic attack or anything like that
they love going to museums together, of all kinds. they love art museums. they also go to aquariums and aviaries
sometimes they like to go to other history museums and criticise the veracity or accuracy of exhibits/translations, all in good fun of course. theyre never actually being mean about it
SIDENOTES/UNCATEGORIZED
they both used to work at starbucks, when they were younger and before they worked at the smithsonian. they worked at separate stores 2 blocks from each other.
milo cant stand soda or carbonated drinks, red can and will chug a java monster in order to survive a long workday if they must. milo is constantly concerned for their health and wellbeing
they r both lightweights when it comes to drinking. they can split a six pack and both be falling-over drunk by the end of the night.
given the changes in beauty standards people DEFINITELY think milo is more attractive than they would in 1914. cmon. hes a lil twinky nerd. you think people wont eat that up?
he never really catches onto the flirting much though
did u think i would forget ki/da and the others? youd be wrong.
i simultaneously like the idea of something similar to the movie happening, but also just like... ki/da just being a regular person living on the surface. in either case they r all friends still
in the case of ki/da just being a regular person on the surface- i like the idea of atl/antis just being A Place in this au, maybe its a bit of a closed off country though? like, not many foreigners live there and to get there you basically need to be there as a diplomat or a scholar
maybe ki/da visits DC as a diplomat? she is a princess, after all
red meets audrey online cause they both yell at the same misogynistic asshole on twitter
they exchange discord names in the replies of the tweet and tell the guy not to interrupt them while theyre talking in his replies
i like to think red and milo are selected to go on an academic visit to atl/antis (to learn about the culture, with permission of the king), and audrey ends up as the mechanic on the ship during the visit and theyre like (spiderman pointing meme) at each other
red and audrey have so many inside jokes that they basically speak a different language. milo gets some of the terms from context and pop culture (they use "so very" in real life- as in "wow, that shirt is so very.") but he is hopeless to learn all of it
one of their inside jokes is any variation of "milo hot girl summer" and they REFUSE to explain it to him no matter how much he begs
milo wears that iconique tank top on the ship and they say it literally any time he bends over, picks anything up, reaches for anything, moves, BREATHES. he is bewildered and at this point concerned
(in truth, the joke came from red taking a really blurry picture of him in a short sleeve shirt where he looked pretty cute and captioned it "milo's having a hot girl summer rn" and they just could not stop repeating it once audrey met him IRL)
they have a minecraft world. i do like to believe that every so often vinny finds a way in- theyre never sure how- and griefs the shit out of them by blowing up EVERY. monument.
this post is getting long bc im enraptured by the idea of an atl/antis modern au so im cutting it off here but expect WAY MORE later

What age is TikTok
Professionals on TikTok get on and Smash it now.
The world is changing. People have shorter attention spans. People want information quick. Short form video content (under 30 seconds) is getting more attention than the other sort of content on social media.
Are you continue to underestimating TikTok? Are you uninterested in Instagram’s snail-like growth? TikTok could seriously help grow your brand, much faster than the other platform. But why?
Here are 10 reasons why professionals and corporations should smash it on TikTok immediately in 2021:
1. Any Niche, Any Professional on TikTok
Yes, TikTok started getting famous due to dancing, but if you are doing not want to ascertain dancing, then TikTok will now show it to you. what's so successful about TikTok is that the algorithm. It gradually understands what you wish by watching what you've got watched and interacted with. If you looked for plumbing then watched a couple of plumbing videos, then the algorithm will recognize that and feed you more relevant content almost like that. you'll find many professional on the platform. I even have connected with doctors, lawyers, engineers and professional athletes to call just a couple of . If you're wondering what quite content you'll create for yourself or your business, you simply need to look for something similar by other professionals on TikTok, in your niche, to urge ideas. A baker can show baking bread, a chiropractor can show necks being clicked. The ideas are endless.
If you're lucky to figure for you own company then the chances are endless. Companies do encourage social media for promotion. Sam Fares (@thepatentattorney), who may be a Lawyer, says people at his work are surprisingly supportive. TikTok are often an honest marketing tool and even large companies are beginning to add a social media policies to make sure boundaries aren't crossed.
2. it isn't only for Kids
According to Comscore statistics, US TikTok users by age is: 33% children and 67% adults. This statistic was taken at the top of 2020, so it's fairly old now therefore the platform has matured even more now.
Even, Gordan Ramsey (@gordonramsayofficial) is using TikTok himself now and most of the large YouTubers like Mr. Beast (@mrbeast) are there already. Instagram Reels remains far behind TikTok - the videos on Reels are like what was being shown on TikTok two years ago, with mostly music only. you'll copy the platform but you'll not copy the audience. i buy many comments and messages by adults everyday on the platform and on the road . a number of these are passed on from their siblings too. Bare in mind, if you influence the younger generation, this also rubs off on the oldsters . So TikTok could even be an honest investment strategy if you are doing target Generation Z. But eventually 67% of TikTok users are adults.
3. TikTok Helps Growth on other platforms like IG and Youtube
TikTok provides links on your profile for both Instagram and Youtube. there's also a choice to add link to your website otherwise you can even put LinkedIn there if you wish . These links are quite other platforms need to offer. Instagram only allows you to insert one link on your platform, so does Twitter, and Clubhouse that only as two. These links gives an honest opportunity to spread your followers elsewhere. Social Media Strategist, Caleb Chin (@socialfeed) thinks that one among the quickest thanks to grow a following on Instagram in 2021 is to create a TikTok following. i might need to agree.
"The quickest thanks to grow on Instagram is to create a following on TikTok."
Successful TikTok accounts also can build an outsized number of subscribers on Youtube without even published one video on YouTube. Take writer and storyteller, Greg Hinthorn (@hinthorn) for instance . He reached bent his TikTok audience and told them he will published his first Youtube video when he reached 4000 subscribers on there. Now he has reached 4000 subscribers on Youtube from TikTok. he's now publishing videos on both platforms.
4. Most Downloaded App on the App Store
According to Appfigures data, TikTok is that the most downloaded app. 90% of all TikTok users access the app on a day to day .
Furthermore, consistent with App Annie, TikTok's screen time at the start of 2021 overtook Facebook for the primary time. the typical screen time for a mean TikTok user is over 20 hours per month.
5. Engagement Can Attract Leads
Client opportunities, contacts, influence and leads - the engagement within the comments section on TikTok is insane. I even have never seen anything love it . there's also a messaging service on TikTok. this will be turned in settings, so anyone can send you a message. you'll also directly reply to an issue via a video which which is shared on your feed, which may helps engagement.
American Architect Tom Reynolds AIA (@tiktokarchitect) has been active on the platform for a year now confirms.
"I'm actually getting more work coming from TikTok now, than anywhere else."
6. TikTok is Authentic
TikTok is transparent and authentic. there's not many commercials or people trying to sell. you are doing not get many of us selling their eBook or spending the primary 5 mins asking you to subscribe because those sort of videos don't had best . TikTok is blunt, straight to the purpose and these are the videos that had best on TikTok. People try to offer something quickly. If you give value meaning something, then an audience will come. Vulnerability is additionally a key factor that folks like. the right filtered and edited photograph on Instagram isn't authentic, neither may be a highly produced YouTube video. People can relate to TikTok because its real - the videos that tend to try to to well aren't the over productive type. it's like what Youtube was 20 years ago. Transparency, vulnerability and authenticity goes an extended way on social media in 2021 and TikTok fits.
7. Learn on TikTok
TikTok has heavily invested $50 million into an ingenious learning fund on short form educational content, which might be the longer term for social media and online education. If you begin learning the way to give information or teach with videos now, this might bring many opportunities for your business or personal brand within the near future. it's not about selling something - its about giving value.
"We've partnered with over 800 public figures, media publishers, educational institutions, and real-world professional ... to supply us creative learning." -TikTok
8. Its Quick and straightforward
If you're a business and employing a videographer to try to to you videos - take care . tons of media companies don't have much experience with short form video, or TikTok. it's a reasonably new thing. they're likely wont to top quality produced videos. Have they published many short videos? Have they built an audience before? These are the questions you ought to be asking them. Quantity is more important for brief form video content. The TikTok app has almost everything in it to make videos quickly, even green screen. you are doing not need to spend one to 2 hours during a room like Club House or spend every week editing an extended form video. Many creators are beginning to up the sport with mirrorless cameras rather than their phone, for higher quality, but this has not oversaturated the platform yet.
9. 100% Creativity
This makes it fantastic if you're within the creative industry. Creating videos displays your creativity. YouTube and TikTok are the highest creative media platforms.
On one hand, you've got you Instagram and LinkedIn where there's tons of individuals sharing other people's content? for instance , a number of the highest architecture accounts on Instagram are accounts reposting other peoples content. it is the same with LinkedIn. People even download other peoples videos on other platforms and repost them on LinkedIn. These videos don't have much creativity.
On the opposite hand, uploads on TikTok have very high creativity. one among my favorite and straightforward videos was made by Architect, Dory Azar (@dory.azar.architect) who actually drew a door swing under a door to elucidate how door swings are drawn. When lecture Dory on Clubhouse, he explained that folks like simple explanations - they appear to figure best.
10. More Organic Reach Than the other Platform
If you begin a replacement account on today with no followers, post something, that post has potential to succeed in more people than the other platform. there's only LinkedIn immediately that comes close. But, new businesses still slug away at Instagram and Facebook in 2021. These platforms tend to be more powerful for people that have already built an audience, have account authority, or want to pay via promotion. this is often partly the rationale why TikTok is so popular. Everyone features a chance for videos to try to to well and reach an audience. Social media apps like Instagram and Facebook are old matured platforms now. These reasons help make TikTok the platform of choice.
If you would like to create a brand, you ought to obviously start by getting to the platforms with the foremost reach. albeit you're still convinced the audience is just too young on TikTok, it could still be an honest marketing investment for you within the short to future .
It might be time to prevent shaking your head. Its a no brainer. TikTok and short form video content is here to remain .
RIBA Chartered Architect, Russell M. Henderson (@ArchitectRussell) is predicated in Tanzania, East Africa . He also 'edu-tains' his passion for Architecture Travel & Film with video content on YouTube , TikTok & Instagram.
Acquisition customer top 5 to use Tiktok
Tiktok is presently gaining popularity with over 300 million active users worldwide. Most business owners feel Tiktok isn't ideal for business because it's crammed with entertainment and sometimes ridiculous videos.
But, that was what many said about Instagram and Snapchat. Today, these two platforms are getting used by top brands to get many thousands for his or her business monthly.
There are numerous reasons why small business must use Tiktok to urge new customers. But during this post, we only covered top 5 reasons.
1. it's Easy to create Communities
With Tiktok for business, building communities is extremely easy. Tiktok may be a video content platform, and with video, grabbing people’s attention is extremely easy as modern-day users are more likely to consume video content than written content.
So, small business owners can cash in of this to make numerous videos of about 15 – 60 seconds to grab the eye of their audience and build their following.
Some people are just on the platform to consume content and to not create. So, with this in mind, your job is to offer them something to consume and obtain their interest.
2. Over 500 Active Users Globally
The number of active users on Tiktok is insane. With over 500 million active users globally, this is often not a chance small businesses should ignore.
Although the most important demographic of Tiktok users are between the age of 16 – 24. But that doesn’t mean people of older age aren't there.
Much like other previous “hot” social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat, Generation Z was the primary to leap on them. So is that the same for Tiktok.
However, if you log into the platform now, you'll find freelancers, dentists, teachers, fashion designers, and even grandparents actively using the platform.
3. it's Easy to Grab Users Attention
Tiktok may be a video-sharing platform and videos are the sole quite content that grabs your attention without you approving it. It starts playing immediately you set your eyes thereon .
Small businesses can cash in of this to share educational, entertaining, and promotional videos moderately. Users are on the platform to be entertained so small businesses must find out how to balance their content because it only takes a scroll to chop your video out.
4. Top Brands Are Claiming their Spots
Go check in on Tiktok now and search if you won’t find top brands like Walmart, Family Feud, HP, and other top brands. numerous brands are now taking advantage of the trend to make awareness and obtain more customers for his or her business.
5. A Platform to Sell with Fun
As a sensible marketer, you ought to be ready to promote your brand to your audience with less invasive techniques. Millennials are already conscious of most marketing tactics and thus they're going to ignore your videos if you are trying to travel the standard ways.
Using stories in your content to pass your brand message will produce a win for you. you'll gain tons of attention by launching a hashtag challenge. A hashtag challenge is where you tell users to make a specific quite video and incorporate your branded hashtag thereto .
You can work with a Tiktok influencer to actually make this type of challenge go viral.
What you need to know about TikTok
TikTok is one of those social networks that grew in popularity VERY quickly, but if you are over the age of 30, you still might have NO IDEA what the platform is all about.
Let’s start with the basics:
Who uses it?
TikTok is primarily used by the under 30’s. 60% of US TikTok users are aged between 16-24, according to a November 2019 release from Reuters.
What is it?
TikTok is basically a re-branding of Musical.ly (don’t worry if you haven’t heard of that either). Basically, it is a social platform where creators can post 15ish second videos (up to 60 seconds) that are shared to their followers, with hopes of landing on the apps “For You Page” (FYP).
What is being posted?
This is a tough one. In the early days, TikTok was full of lip-syncing, and dancing. Today, the scope of content varies, and the algorithm that the platform uses is VERY advanced. Based on the types of videos you watch, and seem to enjoy – the algorithm will shoot out all sorts of videos that it thinks you may enjoy.
For this reason, you may see completely different content than someone else on the app. There are now “Sides” of TikTok as the youth are calling it. This basically means the type of content you are being shown. Political TikTok, Dancing TikTok, Alt TikTok, Straight TikTok, Food TikTok or many others!
Disclaimer: I am definitely on the Puppy and FoodTok side!
Can you make money?
Depending on your location, there is now a creator fund on TikTok for some users. This means that you can earn money per-view on your videos. Unless you have a very large following (we are talking in the millions) TikTok might not be a stable source of income, however, the exposure it brings can open LOTS of doors. Many famous TikTok-ers are now treated like typical celebrities, so sponsors and endorsements are a large portion of their income.
Is it for business?
It’s a powerful tool for the right companies, with the right demographics. We have seen a bump of tiktok of companies using influencers to share their products, creating original ads, or creating accounts and posting unique content. If your target demographic is under 30, this could be a perfect platform to explore!
Even politicians are getting in on the action!
TikTok is a very trendy app, with tons of young minds. Some political figures are using this platform to reach out to young voters and soon-to-be voters. This is an incredibly smart move in my opinion!
One Canadian example that comes to mind is Jagmeet Singh - check out his profile here!
Should you get TikTok?
This is a personal choice. If you are a fan of Instagram and social media in general, and you can use a smart phone with 60% confidence… why not give it a shot?
There have been privacy issues globally, and instances of banning in the US – so do your research and be mindful of what you are sharing, commenting, and engaging with on the App.
Overall, it is a fun platform with absolutely no pressure to ever post anything yourself. You can watch videos for hours, or if you are feeling up to the challenge – try posting a video for yourself!
Conclusion
If your business targets millennials, Tiktok is the perfect platform to get new customers for your business. Small businesses willing to create entertaining and humorous videos can take advantage of this platform to create visibility for their brands and get new customers.

What kit should you buy?
Ok, so you're probably expecting me to recommend cameras, tripods, lenses etc. I'm not gonna do that.
There is tonnes of content on YouTube etc to tell you all about that stuff.
So I'm going to keep it simple.
First, just scroll back up and spend a minute going through the images above. What do you notice?
I'm hoping what you'll notice are a few things.
I'm shooting different things within the images for different reasons or clients.
I have a fair few cameras (about 15 I think at my last count).
The cameras are all different. Why is that?
I'm carrying some kit on my person.
So, here is the thing.
You get to ask yourself the following questions.
What do I want to shoot?
How much kit do I want to carry?
Do I really need to carry all that kit?
So how much kit do I REALLY want to carry?
Do I want to generate an income from shooting?
Do I actually generate an income from shooting?
I have been a photographer for around 30 years now. Starting out as everyone does as a novice, then amateur, then enthusiast and progressed to a semi-pro (semi because I have another job I do I don't shoot full time but I do run my own photography and video business as well).
So my needs right now reflect the kit I buy. I've read loads of magazines with lovely flashy looking kit that I worked hard for to buy from my own day job wages. I spent a fortune. Then a year later, a new camera came out and my head was turned. Then I was lusting after that kit!
It's a never ending cycle where you can be bombarded with videos, reviews of kit and as you've probably learned, targeted adverts on Social Media.
Now my film cameras are purely a purist thing and I learned on film cameras from being a very young kid. So I am attracted to the nostalgia of it. Yes there is something about film that is so super difficult to replicate on digital, but do clients demand shoots on film? Nope!
Only one client ever asked for a shoot on medium format film on my Mamiya 645 pro camera. They had a specific look they were going for. It's expensive and it takes longer to turn the images around.
Clients want high quality media that can be manipulated by graphic designers for ad campaigns etc. And they want it quickly. So digital has to be the most efficient way to go.
I've bought kit that I've used once then stored it away for years! I've learned since then.
For several years now I only buy what I need to get the job done to the high standards that I set myself and that clients demand. If I need kit I may only use once, I'll borrow from a fellow pro shooter or I'll hire it.
So if you're not making money from your photography and unless you have more money than sense, don't waste your money on buying the best money can buy.
On saying that if you buy cheap 'tat' you'll be disappointed and buy twice.
Buy the kit you know you'll use often if you're a hobbyist, or if you want to take photos better than a smart phone can.
Remember also. You have to carry it.
I only buy stuff for my business now that I know I'm happy carrying and gets the job done. I'm fit and healthy but I'm also in my late 40s now and I've put my body through a lot of stuff over the years such as a motorbike accident, bashed about in full contact martial arts and other daft stuff, so wear and tear starts to kick in. Don't buy shit loads of kit that you'll have to carry and either injure yourself or just leave at home because it becomes a chore to carry it.
The best camera in the world is the one that is with you at the time. A £10k Leica with a Summicron lens sat at home in the drawer is useless at that point because it's not with you when you find that photographic opportunity.
So I have been switching out from DSLR to Mirrorless cameras for the last 2 years now. I'm not gonna harp on about what brands. It doesn't matter. Find what works for you.
Finally I'd like to share with you the two most important things that I've invested into my photography that supercede any fancy kit:-
Time and mentorship/lifelong learning.
Time and Mentorship.
By time I mean putting time into practising. No amount of YouTube tutorials or books will improve your photography if you're not putting the practice in. Shoot as often as you can. Practice with light, play with it.
Learn the limits of your kit and learn your own limitations and then fill the gaps by committing to learning for the long haul.
Not one successful photographer worth their salt believes they know it all. The world's best photographers have committed to life long learning.
Leads me onto the last thing.
I currently learn from many sources. Yes I'll admit, the odd YouTube video on editing techniques as software continues to develop. I'm a Pro member of the Photographer's Guild so I have access to all sorts of workshops and learning there.
I am a member of Karl Taylor Education and I've studied with Karl's many products for about 7 years now and I pay a subscription to access his classes.
I have paid to work with some leading industry photographers such as Gary Wallis from the London Photography Institute, Steve Howdle (Elinchrom Ambassador) and the Late Andrew Appleton (Former Photographers guild panel judge and very well respected photography coach and teacher).
I have developed connections with other professionals in my area and I will work with them on projects in and out of the studio.
We'll share tips and go out to other cities to shoot together or shoot together in the studio.
I'll take myself off to London for the day to shoot and I'll get into the less touristy areas of London to do this. It's a 200+ mile trip each way for me but I'll go to the effort of hopping down for the day several times a year.
The point I am trying to make here is there are always opportunities to learn. I have had to invest time and money into them all.
However, I've learned so much that when I look back it amazes me just how far I've come and what I have learned.
Just as with anything. Improving your skills requires time and commitment.
So to summarise:
Decide what you want to shoot and where and buy the camera and kit that suits that.
Travel as light as possible. Develop your knowledge before spending lots of money on more kit.
Find a mentor and ask them to help you. It might cost you money, it might not, but it's a worthwhile investment. It's massively accelerates your learning curve, cutting down your learning duration by years. If someone told you to learn your current job from YouTube videos and books how long would it take you to become proficient at it? Compared to on the job learning/training, learning from people around who are already experts at that job? It's the same principal when you work with a good mentor. Once you have the knowledge in it weighs nothing and the more you use what you've learned the stronger you become in you're art.

Luckily, the accrued confidence your expertise in your 40s makes it a chief time to embrace all those weird stuff you on the Q.T. love. World Health Organization cares that you simply still love seeing Taylor Swift mutually, or that your favorite flick is Toy Story? you are in your 40s, and also the sole person whose opinion matters is your own!
3Learn a replacement language.

11Reinvent your finances.
Your forty square measure an excellent time to speak to a money planner and understand simply what your cash goals square measure over the subsequent 40 years. If you would like to shop for a house, then you'll understand what quantity you would like to save lots of monthly to realistically place down a down payment; if you've got youngsters, then you'll understand what quantity you would like to place away for his or her school education; and if you would like to travel the globe once you retire, then you'll begin to allow simply that.
12Be additional assertive at work.
Your 40s square measures the right  time to become additional assertive at work. And analysis revealed in 2016 within the European Journal of labor and structure psychological science reveals that assertive ladies square measure additional possible to be thought of for raises than their shyer counterparts. you've got worked your far the ladder this so much, thus why not keep going?
13Stay out of workplace drama.
If you intend to retire at sixty-five, you've loads of operating years still before you in your 40s. to form that point additionally sufferable, do your best to steer further from workplace drama whenever doable. 10 years from currently, you will not keep in mind (or care) the World Health Organization worn-out over their justifiable share of printer paper.
14Donot lodge in employment you hate.
If you are sad along with your current work state of affairs, do not be afraid to begin trying to find one thing new—even in your 40s. this can profit each of your mental and physical health: A 2016 survey from Ohio State University found that staff World Health Organization were less consummated in their careers were additional possible to possess sleep problems and depressive symptoms.

Therefore, it's time that you simply learn the way to cook alimental home-cured meals for them, even though they are not all that elaborate. One 2014 study from Johns Hopkins found that folks World Health Organization decay home six to seven nights per week consumed fewer calories than those that dine out.
18Keep your drinking to a minimum.
While you'll are able to drink a complete bottle of wine and rouse feeling sort of a million greenbacks in your 20s, odds square measure that is not the case by the time you hit forty. individuals tend to possess a lower tolerance for alcohol as they age, thus once you do drink, limit yourself to simply many glasses ANd make certain to consume an equal quantity of water.
19Take the proper supplements.
Want to enhance your health and also the world around you? create it your mission to begin giving back in your 40s. the analysis revealed in 2012 in Health psychological science reveals that volunteering may very well increase your time period, thus once you volunteer at a charity or walk the dogs at your native shelter, you may feel smart for many reasons.
21Get your garments tailored.
In your 40s, you should look as assured as you're feeling. one of the simplest ways that to accomplish this can be by having your garments tailored. a superbly tailored suit or dress won't solely fit your needs sort of a glove, however, it will assist you to seem slimmer.
22And get eliminate garments that do not work properly.
You might are able to depart with sporting ill-fitting garments in your 20s and 30s, however not in your 40s. once you are reinventing yourself throughout this decade, make certain to toss something that does not work, whether or not that is jeans that square measure a size too little or shirts that square measure a size too huge. Form-fitting items that really work square measure continually the foremost flattering!
23Develop and attention routine that works for you.
Your face is that the very first thing individuals see after they cross-check you, thus create it shine with AN age-appropriate attention routine. many of us expertise additional status as they age, thus it is time to ditch those harsh acne-fighting merchandise you employed in your 20s in favor of gentler ones. And if you are needing to defend wrinkles, moisturizing is that the name of the sport.
24Switch up your makeup routine.
That makeup merchandise that worked on your 20-year-old skin most likely is not reaching to pull their weight once you are forty. switch to age-appropriate create up designs and formulas can make it easier to deemphasize fine lines and wrinkles whereas treating status and alternative skin considerations. Better yet, dynamic up your look will assist you to reinvent yourself and appearance additional current—cat-eye liner and nude lips will not be fashionable forever, after all.
25Find confidence.
You only have one life to measure, thus why waste it feeling dangerous concerning what you see within the mirror? Your 40s square measure that sweet spot wherever you are good enough to each treat your body right and settle for that perfection is not essentially doable. whereas you'll have many additional fine lines than you probably did twenty years past, take into account the proof of a life well-lived.
Not sure a way to be additional confident? In another Best Life article, Miyume McKinley, LCSW, owner of Epiphany content, Consulting & Treatment Services, suggests creating "a list of why you're keen on you, and why you must love you." Once your list is complete, she says you must "remind yourself often" of all the explanations you've got to warm yourself.
26Stop examination yourself to others.
It's onerous to feel assured concerning your appearance, finances, relationship, and career 24/7, however by the time you are in your 40s, you must create a sincere effort to prevent examination yourself to others. By this time in time, your life has, for higher or worse, take a unique path than several of your friends or relations, however, there is no use beating yourself up over it. concentrate on the items that you are happy concerning and proud concerning instead, which sorry feeling is bound to fade.
27Keep a journal.
It's no huge secret that our reminiscences tend to induce less sharp as we tend to age. the nice news? Journaling is also able to facilitate. A notable 2001 study revealed within the Journal of Psychology found that communicatory writing improved memory and created subjects additional capable of handling stress. Win-win!
28Learn a way to advance from your own mistakes.
While that flubbed interview or dangerous date will want AN albatross around your neck, you would like to forgive yourself for those mistakes by the time you hit forty. once it's applicable, atone, and once it isn't, simply do your best to maneuver on.
29Let go of grudges.
Similarly, let people off the hook for past offenses currently that you are forty and additional mature. Researchers at the University of the American state, Berkeley found that unforgiving thoughts really accrued study subjects' pressure and vital sign, thus it should be best for your mental and physical health to simply let those grudges go.
30Embrace your optimistic facet.
While it is easy to fall on the glass-half-empty facet of the spectrum, enjoying life additional starts with channeling your inner mortal. Not solely will being optimistic improve your outlook on life, however, the analysis revealed in 2017 within the Yankee Journal of medical specialty links optimism with lower rates of death from common ailments like cancer, cardiopathy, and stroke.
31Remove toxicant individuals from your life.
You only have one life to life, thus why waste most of it on those who do nothing to form it better? As family and work commitments increase in your 40s, it is an excellent time to chop toxicant individuals out of your life permanently. no one appearance back at fifty and thinks, "I want I had spent longer with those who created Pine Tree State feel terrible concerning myself."
32Make longer for your friends.
In your 40s, create a true effort to pay time along with your friends on an everyday basis. the important analysis revealed in 2007 within the journal medical specialty suggests that having robust social support could improve mental state, thus move and host a game night or simply obtain the phone to talk once you get the possibility.
33Carve out some additional alone time in your schedule.
Spending nightly hanging out along with your friends or co-workers could have felt essential at twenty. By the time you are in your 40s, however, it's even as vital to understanding once you want downtime and takes it. Researchers at the University of Buffalo have even connected alone time to accrued ability, thus do not be shamefaced to sit down out thusme social events in favor of a quiet night reception once you feel so inclined.
34Learn a way to de-stress naturally.

And whereas wine and chocolate square measure helpful stress-busters, lowering your stress levels through exercise, meditation, and alternative heedfulness practices will create your life easier, additional pleasurable, and longer. per a 2005 study within the Yankee Journal of medical specialty, stress-reduction exercises really reduced mortality from disorder by the maximum amount as thirty p.c and reduced cancer death risk by up to forty-nine p.c among hypertensive adults.
35Live a less inactive life-style.
When you reinvent yourself when forty, aim to prevent sitting most. Sitting for eight-plus hours daily has been connected to accrued rates of avoirdupois and disorder, creating it a significant do not for anyone World Health Organization needs to form it to eighty.
Thankfully, there square measure multiple ways to form your workplace routine additional active. per the dressing Clinic, adopting a standing table may doubtless assist you to shave off an additional 5 pounds annually. And if standing all day does not appear possible, you'll continually keep moving with AN under-desk elliptical or stair-stepper.
36Stop disbursement most time behind the screen.
However, you reinvent yourself in your 40s, make certain you are doing it in an exceedingly means that does not involve an excessive amount of screen time. Screen time has been connected to health problems starting from vision impairment to diminished heart health.
37Spend longer outdoors.
Not sure a way to reinvent yourself while not mistreatment screens? Get outdoors! As a 2018 study from the University of East Anglia notes, disbursement time outside will cut back your risk of kind two polygenic disorder, disorder, stress, high pressure, and overall death. whether or not you choose to require a walk around the block or picnic within the park, a bit little bit of time outdoors will do one some smart in your 40s.

Luckily, obtaining simply seven or eight hours an evening is enough to stay you sharp as a tack.
39Drink additional water.
In your 40s, your bottle ought to be your constant companion from the instant you rouse to the instant you visit sleep. Drinking enough water on a routine will keep you feeling full for extended and create it easier to shed some pounds. what is additional, researchers at the University of Connecticut have connected dehydration to fatigue, memory problems, headaches, and poor mood, thus staying hydrous may well be the key to staying healthy through your 40s.

I think you're being a little too hard on dany. Yeah, she hasn't had exactly the best tenure as queen, she's made lots of mistakes, but when you think about it, it's not entirely her fault. 1) she hasn't had the education that say, jon, tyrion or robb had, she was never supposed to be queen, for most of her life, the only things she knew about westeros were things viserys told her, which was likely very biased and not 100% accurate, she was on the run most of her life and then sold at 13 -
-to a man she doesn’t know. 2) during her tenure we can’t say she has had the wisest, brightest counseling, the best is probably barristan and it’s not saying much, barristan is a knight, not a ruler. This is why i can’t wait for her to meet tyrion, he would be the best adviser she could ever have, if then, with his cousel, she still fails, then maybe we can talk about her not being fit to rule. The context she’s in is also very different from anything she knows, from the free cities to what -little she knows about westeros, and she can’t really trust most of the local advisers… i don’t think many people would do better than her in this situation. Also jon is also a flawed ruler, I like him a lot better the dany, but he’s had a better education then her and isn’t ruling in a context he isn’t familiar with. Besides we like him as a ruler bc we are inside his mind, we know what he thinks, why he does what he does, we see him as pragmatic, open minded, and we love him for that, but -but where he fails is communicating his plans to his subordinates, not only bowen marsh & co, even his friends (those he doesn’t send away, another mistake!! the saying goes keep your friends close, your enemies closer, he forgot the first part), to them he’s betraying the watch by allowing the freefolk south the wall, if he only could communicate, maybe he wouldn’t be dead now… I do believe he’ll get better, learn from his mistakes, but so will dany. I’m not criticising, just discussing, i -hope you’re not offended :)) sorry for the long ask
man I don’t get offended because someone has different opinions than me on a fictional character and they’re nice about expressing them don’t worry xD It takes a lot to get me offended over nicely expressed opinions about fictional people ;)
anyway on to it: I’ll admit I’m probably a bit biased about dany in the sense that like, premise: I don’t hate her or anything and I think she’s fairly okay and I did like her povs up until asos, and then the ones in adwd were imo in dire need of an editor bringing an axe to them and I found them so boring that I probably don’t remember half of what happened so like, my opinions on dany are probably not as reliable as my opinions on theon or robb or jaime or people I’m actually interested in and whose povs I re-read more than once, but.
I agree that she hasn’t had an education in that sense, but thing is: these people we’re mentioning are all kids (never mind that the adults don’t do much better but still) and out of them, jon is the only one who’s managed to hold his own except for his PA problem because he sucks at communicating (that’s why he and robb would have been an a+ team haha) and the thing with dany is that… like… I don’t know how the hell to put it, but she has too many good intentions and too badly done executions.
like, you’re totally right that she hasn’t had the education and she has only viserys to tell her about westeros and barristan is a knight and not a ruler and so on, and tyrion is probably a better choice for her as an advisor than anyone else she’s had until now, but the thing is that she’s…. very sure that she’s right and she’s also immature in a way that’s fairly worrying. okay, she can get better, of course, but what I’m thinking is, never mind not listening to people when being told she couldn’t turn over the slavery system overnight or that crucifying people as a punishment because she thinks it’s deserved it’s perfectly fine, that IN THE BOOK she chunked out her perfect opportunity to go to westeros because she thought quentyn wasn’t hot.
like, it’s one of the few parts I remember clearly from adwd because I couldn’t stop thinking what the hell, but basically: you’ve been wanting to go to westeros since book one, you get a guy giving you an entire fleet and an alliance with dorne if you marry him and you tell him no while thinking if you had looked like your hot friend with you I might have said yes? like, the thing is that if you want to *rule* you can’t let yourself be ruled by that kind of thing. and fine, she’s a teenager so it’s normal that she wants to bang the hot guy or has the hots for daario and so on, but if you want to be a queen or a ruler then you… have to set it aside? in the show they made her do it (at least) and maybe in the book she’s getting there but fact is, there isn’t one thing she got right in mereen and her entire mindset of approaching ruling imo is completely flawed.
and I mean, robb was fucked the moment he won at the whispering wood because if tywin lannister is planning your demise treacherously then you’re a dead man walking if he doesn’t die first but his worst mistakes were made out of consequences of impulsive decisions he took in a bad emotional moment (losing the frey alliance because he slept with jeyne because theon betrayed him and so on) and he did have the education. the reason I think jon’s the one with the best tenure out of the three (because his achilles’s heel is that he’s an introvert with bad communication issues mainly) is that he’s the only one who has - until now - managed to keep emotions and duty separate and even when he didn’t he did it later (ie he could have just defected and have all the red haired children in the world with ygritte but he didn’t), and when ruling he can separate his needs from what he has to do (which is why stannis likes him or at least one of the reasons why). and even if he’s too hard on himself (DON’T SHUT YOUR FRIENDS OUT JON) if you don’t count his miscommunication issues you know he’s pragmatic, he can weigh bad vs good consequences and that’s why I think that jon/dany if it happens will happen because it’s ultimately the best tactical choice and he’s gonna do it but without necessarily enjoying it. like, we’re also in dany’s head during adwd and in his and imo there was a really stark difference (hahahahaha puns!) in between how he approached ruling and how she did. and fine, he had the advantage of doing it somewhere he knew, but I really doubt jon got the exact same education as robb when it came to becoming lord of winterfell (and robb had an education for that, not for kingship, and he said it - I’m trying to do the best I can but idk what the fuck I’m doing) and he basically’s going out of WHAT WOULD MY FATHER HAVE DONE + WHAT HAVE PEOPLE TAUGHT ME ON THE WALL which imo is not all necessarily healthy (like, kill the boy and let the man be born has good sides and bad sides…) and with that he still managed to find a way to replenish the ranks, find food for winter, solve their financial woes, find allies against the white walkers and if he could have managed his PA and done some cultural integration his plan was to end the war with the wildlings too which has been a thing since forever? like, he’s flawed but eventually he’s the only one out of all the teenagers in a ruling position in westeros who was going somewhere and who had a vision he knew how to act on and who wasn’t putting feelings over needs, and on top of that the battle with the wildlings was basically him organizing the entire defenses and behaving like a seasoned commander at what, fifteen? sixteen? robb was probably better at that ngl and it shows they did have the same education there, but he did all of that without dragons and with an understaffed NW. and where did he fuck up? when he broke down and said he was going to winterfell to find arya.
as in, when it got personal. the one time that started the revolt was the one time he put feelings over needs. except that he did it once, dany’s done that for the entirety of her tenure while instead when she was khaleesing she was actually doing a lot better than average because I mean since she’s not an asshole she treats her warriors with respect and not as if they’re disposable slaves and she’s entirely more compassionate than the average. like, for a khaleesi she’s really really really good, as a ruler she’s really not as much and it’s personality-driven too. same as I think jon would be a terrible khal but is a very good ruler/defender. and when I say that imo dany’s better off khaleesing in essos it’s not because I don’t like her, it’s because I honestly think she’d do more good and do better with that lifestyle than on the iron throne. also because she’s there to deconstruct the whole ‘CONQUEROR WHO COMES FROM OUTSIDE AND MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER’ type and idk if she gets on the throne in westeros it’s really too obvious and not at all a deconstruction unless both she and jon hate it, so *shrug*.
I mean, obviously both will learn from their mistakes and there’ll be character development - I don’t think that hers necessarily means becoming a good ruler because until she learns to distinguish feelings and needs and to be less emotion-driven (and until she learns that she’s not always right just because she’s daenerys targaryen and the blood of the dragon) she won’t get there. hopefully tyrion’s counseling might get her there, but my point is that jon already has the right priorities sorted and he has a personality/way of thinking that lends itself to that job, dany imo doesn’t.
but that’s me obviously. also again I’m not a dany expert and like, I don’t hate her but my opinions on dany are what they are, don’t expect the same level of me having thought it through as my opinions re characters I actually care about xD

Jouelzy is here to talk — and whether you're a #SmartBrownGirl or not, you should listen
Tumblr media
This piece is part of an ongoing series exploring what it means to be a woman on the internet.
In early May, Kanye West said something that made the nation groan — again.
“When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice," he bellowed, voice echoing across the walls of the TMZ offices and broadcast on social media timelines. Fans were in an uproar, loyalists stood by the erratic remarks from their hero, while hip hop analysts argued the implications of a pioneer’s words.
Two months later, a vlogger who goes by the name Jouelzy uploaded a video to YouTube that shared a little over 10 minutes of discussion about West’s charged comments. That is a long time to wait before producing content that’s riffing off of a viral moment. Just think of how quickly we all cycle through challenges or memes online, and the insane speed at which we move on to the next big thing.
But that is the beauty of the work that Jouelzy, 33, has consistently churned out to viewers over the years.

Today, Jouelzy is as synonymous with her compelling videos on YouTube as she is with the hashtag #SmartBrownGirl, a movement she began to encompass the critical content she produces. At first glance, it seems like a rallying cry — perhaps akin to CaShawn Thompson's #BlackGirlMagic. But while it evokes a similar sentiment, it has also become a space for a community Jouelzy ushered. It's created space for folks that might not have felt comfortable or accepted in other corners of the internet, and for people craving brash and critical dialogue in a wild, wild web of underwhelming takes.
Before there was an official hashtag to align with her content, smart brown girls were always at the forefront of her work. “I was just talking to myself in the beginning,” she explained, and talking to herself attracted others similar to her, birthing a strong movement on social media built of “smart brown girls” and others.
“[#SmartBrownGirl] was initially to start a conversation and just to be able to work through things that I was going through myself and to see myself represented,” she explained. “Now it’s more so that I want to encourage a critical dialogue and critical thought because I realized so much of what we consume on social media and in media in general in our day to day is very surface, shallow content.”

With each upload, Jouelzy tackles the many conversations of the moment but her conversational approach is wrapped in a blanket of time and care that is invaluable. By the time a video of hers lands on your screen, the viral moment may have passed, but the nuanced discussion that matters is still going strong in cultural conversations — and Jouelzy’s strength is giving viewers the tools to understand the context from her perspective around what exactly is going on in this complicated world we live in.
Nowadays the Texan is a YouTube Creator for Change and member of a Google cohort focused on public policy, but like many of us who grew up in the generation of influencer, Jouelzy — who keeps her legal name to herself — just wanted free weaves at the beginning.
While she held down a job in advertising, and in the midst of applying for a masters degree in business administration, she did what many with access to the internet and a camera have done. She uploaded her first video in 2010 and after some time doing the tutorials, things began to mold into a more concrete path that just worked for her.
“I just was dealing with a lot of ways in which the world was trying to box me in and tell me who I needed to be in order to be respected,” she explained, recounting the shift between making those hair videos and transforming her channel into a burgeoning hot spot for nuanced conversations. “I was having a hard time with it because I didn’t want to sand down to fit into a perfect little box of what it means to be a respectable black woman in ways that other people don’t have to sand themselves down.”
There’s also the harsh reality about the toll that being a woman, particularly a black woman can bring, and while we witness that manifest in real life, it also impacts those online.
“I was watching my Facebook timeline change,” Jouelzy said, recalling the months well before the 2016 U.S. presidential election. "I think in 2015, I saw someone tweet “Hillary, if I have to,” she said. “I thought this was fascinating, and then watching that thought process be manipulated by outlets to sway perceptions amongst black women.”
It was that shift, coupled with the desire to dive deeper into conversations that platforms like Twitter or Instagram limited, that propelled her to do the work that’s resulted in hundreds of videos. Those videos, whether about celebrities or racial discourse, offer up another way to consume the news — but from a friend who is willing to go there, all while having the insight to understand how exactly millennials consume news.
“I think it’s becoming really dangerous, the fact that we have this mass access to information and a lot of us don’t know how to consume that in relation that’s actually productive and honest and able to verify the correct sources to pull things from,” she said.
News consumption has changed over the years. According to a study conducted by the American Press Institute, millennials, as compared to their boomer predecessors, are often exposed to even more diverse stories because of the various means from which they get their news — including everything from Twitter to group text messages. The same study, which surveyed over 1,000 people on the phone and in-person between the ages of 18 and 34, also suggests that 83 percent of millennials use YouTube to get their news.
Constant attacks on the press from the White House and a headline-skimming culture (thanks to the ubiquitous presence of social media timelines) are just a few of the problems facing new and traditional media. And considering most newsrooms are overwhelmingly white, a perspective from a middle-class, college-educated black woman who is not affiliated with a major media organization makes her point of view even more critical. But for Jouelzy, it’s more important now than ever to, in her words, “not tell people what to think but encourage people to think.”
And she does exactly that — in an entertaining fashion.
If you wander over to her YouTube channel, you'll find some videos dubbed "Get Ready With Me" — they are like makeup tutorials with a social impact twist and show Jouelzy vulnerable and open on camera as she prepares for the day. Others, like a series called "Pop Snark," are specifically devoted to the latest news in pop culture. There are also reviews of shows like Insecure, a series called #Blessed, and videos tackling the topics on everyone’s minds. The common thread is a hilarious and accessible way of understanding why something is happening, not just that it’s happening.

“We tend to have a binary thought process, everyone tends to talk like they have the answer,” Jouelzy explained. “I think the more that I’ve gotten into trying to hold these conversations for my smart brown girl audience about things around societal issues that we deal with, the way we are using pop culture, the way pop culture intersects with political history, and how we view each other or even how capitalism impacts our life, [the more] I try to step away from trying to give the answer on things or act like I have the solution or that correct way of thinking because you’re just going to end up tripping yourself up,” she said.
“The internet has its way of doing that to women who inhabit its corridors,” Jouelzy said. Despite her lack of inhibition when it came to launching her YouTube channel in the beginning, there’s still a lot she keeps offline. “It went decently from the beginning, but I think the more that I’ve gotten into this and the more that I’ve been vulnerable and talking about things that were more intimate to myself that I have picked up some weird insecurities,” she explained. “Now I’m more cognizant of the fact that people don’t like me and beforehand, I wasn’t.”
But people do like her. A lot of people. She has nearly 175,000 subscribers.
"I was never that great with school or in a classroom setting," Dante Dcasso, a fan, said over email. "Jouelzy has a way of keeping me intrigued and wanting to learn more about certain topics when it comes to politics, race, women’s history, etc. I love that I can watch a video about a Kardashian, but also get a lesson," he explained. "She comes off as relatable and I trust her."
Dcasso found her work randomly on YouTube but since then, has remained an avid viewer after being touched by her discussions around mental health. "I remember immediately binge watching her past content. I wanted to get to know her and I wanted to put everyone on. Jouelzy is the older black sister that I never had," Dcasso explained.
An older black sister whose goals are to bring the #SmartBrownGirl movement everywhere.
Jouelzy's working on a top-secret podcast, continuing writing, and trying to make her way to television screens as a commentator. She credits YouTube for being an "equalizer" that has brought support and access and is now helping her actualize bigger dreams — but there's no doubt that like her work in the past, she'll take us all along with her.
