So recently I listened to a bunch of music from Kipo on Spotify. That is my entire Spotify history for the past year, I don't really use Spotify, because I dislike being told "you have skipped too many songs" no fuck you, you don't tell me I cannot skip a song that's not how this works.

Listen I would share a clip of them singing but there doesn't appear to be one on YouTube so here's the song itself. Hyun-Soo and the Narhartz are an important part of the final season of Kipo, because part of the story of Kipo is that music bridges cultural divides. It's present in the story from the very first episode, and one of the reasons HMUFA (it's pronounced huhMOOfa, the Human/Mute UItimate Friendship Alliance) works is because Kipo reaches out to each species of mutant through their signature music over the course of the entire series, establishing an early rapport.

Except the Dubstep Bees, she has to get an interpreter for the Dubstep Bees. Kipo plays guitar and sings, she doesn't really get EDM I guess.

I wish we had more of the books throughout the series. I think it's really interesting that he’s narrating it. Very much so mirrors his true belief in Fillory and in magic in season 4.

Julia makes me so upset in the early seasons. “You can’t run away hard enough, can you.” Firstly, shut up. Second, he admits this in the trials. Third, Quentin also does the thing where he just doesn’t tell the people in his life about his mental illness and therefore the coping mechanisms he uses look like childish escapism to everyone around him.

The contrast between Julia in the first episode telling Q to get real versus like 5 episodes later going batshit over not having magic so maybe just can it actually.

I feel the need to specify but I do not hate Julia as a character at all. She just pisses me off in the first like episode and a half or so. Like until she’s got her shit sorted w magic and the importance of restraint and all that she’s just judging everybody for everything like she’s better than so yea.

oh hey, here’s a playlist from 2017 that I realized wasn’t on my website with the rest of them and that I totally wasn’t thinking about because there’s actually a part two that has never seen the light of day that may or may not be incoming

As I write, I like to build playlists for all my characters and, occasionally, will make playlists as a character as well. These playlists are part of my writing process and I take them far more seriously than anyone should. Sometimes the playlists come together instantly and effortlessly and sometimes I play around with them for months. As such, there are a fair number of cast-offs that never make it onto the final, official playlist. That's what this playlist is.

So here we are: all the songs that nearly made it on to the character playlists but got cut for various reasons. Those reasons tend to fall into one of a few categories:

There wasn’t space / another song was serving a similar purpose

The song was right for the character but not right for the character at the beginning of their story (which is what most of the playlists are)

The mood/genre/tempo of the song was out of place in the playlist

I discovered the song after the playlists had been put together.

All my playlists are very specifically ordered, so adding or removing songs after their publication is more or less impossible. Instead, I would throw songs into this B-Side playlist as they appeared, meaning that, unlike most of my playlists, the order here is random (aka this playlist has NO flow). Here is a list of where they would have gone had they made the final cut. The characters are listed above the tracks, with a link to the playlist in question.

A/N, 2020: These are the B-Sides specifically from pre-Season 4. Back in August of 2017, I  did a sticker giveaway to see what folks would guess about which songs were for which characters - these annotations were published after that giveaway and thus, there's some reference to how people guessed!

WADSWORTH 

1. “Heavy Metal Lover” - Lady Gaga

This is a Wadsworth song through and through in terms of style and swagger. There just wasn’t space for it.

2. “Reaper Man” - Mother Mother

This is a song that was recommended to me as a Damien song by tumblr user kalgalen and I am actively mad that I didn’t know this song before making Damien’s playlist. The style, the lyrics - everything about this song is Damien. And it actually fits perfectly after the opening track but by the time I was made aware of it, it was too late.

Oh yeah, I’m an ugly mess/not in the face, but in the head - regardless of how attractive Damien is, this is something he thinks. God, what an edgelord line this is.

Oh yeah, I got no choice/got no choice/but to love myself - I mean, it’s just all there.

CHLOE 

3. “Her Morning Elegance” - Oren Lavie

I love that this song really conjures a visceral image to your brain - it paints such a vivid picture. It’s delicate, but determined. I think Chloe sometimes moves through her world separate and observing and that’s what this song is.

There’s also an amazing music video that I think Chloe would watch over and over again.

I got a lot of submissions guessing that this was a song for Sam and I really see that too. It fits well with the aesthetic of her playlist and the theme of fighting for your life everyday definitely resonates with Sam, as does the “Nobody knows” lyric. But the lyrics are also about being out in the world, which is something Sam doesn’t do but Chloe wants to continue to do desperately, despite her ability making it difficult.  

CALEB/ADAM 

4. “Blue and Yellow” - The Used

This was a song suggested by my sister for Caleb and Adam because of the colors involved and also because The Used was a band we both listened to a lot when we were emo teenagers like Adam. Ultimately, this song feels very dated as early emo and didn’t quite fit musically on any of their mixes, either in-universe or not.

And it’s all in how you mix the two/and it starts just where the light exists/it’s a feeling that you cannot miss/and it burns a hole/through everyone that feels it

5. “Stupid for You” - Waterparks

This is another song that was recommended to me, this time by a tumblr user and it is absolutely perfect. I didn’t even realize that there was pop punk being made like this anymore, so I was delighted.

You’re yellow, I’m natural blue/let’s get together and be green like my insides - I mean??? Couldn’t have said it better myself

Also, the refrain of “stupid for you” fits perfectly with the “I’m the guy who’s been so stupid about you that it broke my fucking super power!” I mean, I clearly ghostwrote this song.

ISO: the tumblr user who suggested this song. I have scoured both of my blogs to find the ask to no avail so if it was you, please raise your hand.

Both of these songs would go on a Caleb/Adam ship mix if such a thing existed. But in fact, both their mixes are in-universe and, while one of them might put this on a mix now, it would have been way too vulnerable of a thing to put on one of those earlier playlists. I've linked to their second in-universe mix - the quite lovey one that Adam makes for Caleb.

MARK 

6. “Time Machine" - Robyn

This definitely felt a little too on the nose for Mark, so I went with “Hang With Me” instead. But Mark loves Robyn and would love the DeLorean reference in this so it was very tempting. It’s also a song all about making impulsive decisions, which Mark definitely does a lot, but in classic Robyn style, it’s such a bop despite the serious lyrics. That balance fits Mark perfectly.

7. “F U” - Miley Cyrus

I know this song is about someone cheating, but it is such a good angry-fuck-you song that I can’t help but think of it in the context of Mark’s feelings towards Wadsworth. Having missed the heyday of pop borrowing from dubstep and the increasing use of internet slang, I think Mark would have gotten out of The AM and fallen hard for this song. I imagine many an afternoon before Joan gets home from work just angry dancing around the living room singing along to this.

SAM/MARK 

8. “Someone to Fall Back On” - Jason Robert Brown

This is 100% Sam singing to Mark about being his knight in shining armor. Sam is hard on herself - doesn’t realize her own strength - so the self-deprecating lyrics really work for her. It didn’t make it on the playlist because it felt like it was a little further down the line in their relationship - somewhere around Episode 40.

I got a lot of guesses for Frank on this one, which completely fits. He’s quite a bit more confident in his abilities than Sam - if he thinks he can be your knight, he’ll say so right from the get-go.

9. “Can’t Get Started With You” - Ella Fitzgerald

This is pretty self-explanatory. It didn’t fit with the very particular structure that I created for the Sam/Mark playlist and it also felt like a later stage of their relationship. That playlist was them falling in love and wanting to be in the same time; this song is getting close to that but then getting pulled apart again, first by Damien and then by the difficult realties of actually trying to have a relationship. If the previous track is end of Season 3 for them, this is a Season 4 song.

A/N, 2020: it certainly is a Season 4 song, because it actually ended up going on their Season 4 playlist.

DAMIEN/MARK 

10. “Elvis Ain’t Dead” - Scouting for Girls

So…this is a reject from an as of yet published playlist. I know - not fair. Think of this as the free square on a bingo sheet. In the course of writing Season 3, I was motivated to make a playlist for a relationship that was becoming increasingly interesting to write. While this playlist could certainly be seen as a ship playlist, I have no intentions to ever put these characters together in a real way, but their dynamic was so compelling that I wanted to explore it. I will eventually release the playlist because it’s one of the best I’ve made, but I didn’t want it influencing anyone’s reaction to the end of Season 3. Loose lips sink ships.

Okay, okay, I won’t leave you hanging because a few people actually guessed this one right - it’s from a Damien/Mark playlist. This is actually one of three unpublished Damien mixes - for whatever reason, music is the fastest and easiest way for me to connect to him. He really brings out the playlist-making skills in me.

A lot of people guessed that this was Agent Green which I absolutely love. Poor Owen.

I love pretty much all aspects of all the fandoms I’ve requested, so I’m sure I’ll be thrilled with whatever you come up with, but here’s some stuff to help if you want a little bit more to go on!

Really, the most important thing is that the song is the right one for the vid - I have pretty broad musical tastes and there’s not a lot I don’t like, although I’m less keen on the more electronic/dubstep-y side of dance music. I really like folk music, rock, pop, 80s power ballads, female singer-songwriters with their own instruments, some country, musical theatre soundtracks… if you’re looking for more to go on, artists I like include Dar Williams, Vienna Teng, Regina Spektor, Ingrid Michaelson, Janelle Monae, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Bonnie Langford, Foxes, CHVRCHES, The Burns Unit, Clannad, Cyndi Lauper, Dolly Parton, Florence + the Machine, Lorde, Karine Polwart, Jim Moray, Toyah, Kate Rusby, Nancy Kerr, Fleetwood Mac, Patrick Wolf, Tracy Chapman, Brandi Carlile,  Missy Higgins, Ella Fitzgerald - but honestly I’ll listen to almost anything and if it works for the vid that’ll make me love the song anyway! (And uhh… I know it’s deeply unlikely but I would very much appreciate if you did not use a Ronan Keating song.)

General:

I love vids that make me feel feelings! Character studies, friendship vids, vids about communities and teams, cute vids, sad vids, silly vids, dancey vids, people kicking ass vids… Mainly I just want to feel emotions about the thing in handy-dandy vid form.

As Time Goes By (UK TV) (67 x 30-min episodes)

This was my go-to comfort show a while back and I’ve recently been rewatching it and remembering how much I love it! I’m here for absolutely anything, but if you’re stuck I’d love a vid about Jean and Lionel’s romance (heartfelt or funny or a mix of both), a fun ensemble vid, or absolutely anything about Jean and her ridiculous perfect Judi Dench face.

Alpennia Series - Heather Rose Jones (Novels)

I am so into this series! I’ve really enjoyed all of the POV characters so far and I’d be up for anything about any of the central relationships or characters, but I’d also be really thrilled with something that captures the general vibe of the series - magic, mystery, scholarship, queer community, intrigue - or the feel of 19th-century Alpennia, particularly the city of Rotenek.

One Day at a Time (TV 2017) (39 x 30-min episodes)

This series is so full of love and so heartwarming and good, and I’d love absolutely anything about it! If you’re looking for ideas though, maybe something about how the three generations of women connect, a lighthearted/comedy vid about everybody, or a character study of Penelope.

Taskmaster (UK TV) (85 x 45-min episodes)

Things I love about this show: the silliness yet creativity of the challenges, the outside-the-box approaches some of the contestants take, the slapstick, the sense of camaraderie between the contestants, and the general lighthearted vibe. I’d love anything that captures that. I haven’t seen all of the seasons yet but some of my favourite contestants are Roisin Conaty, Richard Osman, Katherine Ryan, absolutely everyone in Series 4, Nish Kumar, Aisling Bea, Sally Phillips and Liza Tarbuck. Another of my fave things is when there are two whole girls in a series and they are rooting for each other, see Lolly & Mel and Aisling & Sally. I love Greg and Alex too but I’m less into their on-screen dynamic. Although it occurs to me that a vid that was just about Alex setting and administering the challenges could be absolutely hilarious!

The Vicar of Dibley (28 x 30-min episodes)

Another cosy comfort show! This is one I go back to again and again, and I’d be delighted with anything for it. I love Geraldine, I love how genuine and how kind she is and how much she cares about her community while being aware of their eccentricities. I’d love a Geraldine vid, a Geraldine-and-Alice vid, a Geraldine-and-everyone vid, a Geraldine-and-her-faith vid, ensemble silliness and general shenanigans... 

Xanadu (1980) (Movie, safety fandom)

I LOVE this film with deep sincerity but part of that love is recognising that it’s COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS, so don’t worry if you’re working from a more tongue-in-cheek angle. I’d love to see anything that showcases the absurdity of the plot, the glitzy delight of the musical numbers, the fabulous late 70s/early 80s-ness of the setting, the dancing, the characters, the sheer OTT-ness of the entire production…

Time Twin Headcanons!

I wasn’t going to do this, but I kinda had to. Oh well! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyway, here are some dumb headcanons about Acronix and Krux. Though, admittedly, mostly Acronix. :3 There are a lot of them because I obsess over these dorks (also I’ve been working on this list since early April. I waited for the season to air in the US so most of the fandom would see it before I released this into the wild :B). There are some slight spoilers for anyone who hasn’t seen season 7 yet. (Seriously, though, if you’ve seen the first two episodes, you should be fine.)

-While Acronix adores technology in general, there are three items he treasures above all else: his BorgWatch, BorgPad, and, the jewel of his collection, his BorgPod. 

-Acronix absolutely LOVES music. He’ll listen to practically anything, but his favourites include metal of pretty much any kind, like nu, pirate, and especially anything that could be classified as hair/glam metal. Dubstep also ranks high on his list, because it sounds like someone fiddling with time while playing music.

-If he ever, somehow, gets his powers back, Acronix totally plans to learn how to play drums and join a speed metal band. :P

-Acronix’s favourite Stratovarius song is The Hands of Time, though he is a little disappointed that it’s not about him and his brother.

-Acronix also secretly loves Yanni, but he absolutely won’t admit it to ANYONE. (Or the fact that his most favourite song ever is Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head.) :3

-Acronix can sing. Like, really well. And he loves karaoke. He’ll drag Krux out to sing all the time, and Krux hates it. He couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. But he loves his brother, so he’ll humour him.

-Krux dislikes music in general. It all sounds like discordant noise to him. He suffers from Amusia. (He’s tone deaf.)

-Krux is actually secretly upset that he can’t appreciate his brother’s singing talent.

-As it turns out, Acronix got the BorgPod specifically so he wouldn’t aggravate his brother’s condition on a regular basis whenever he wants to listen to music.

-Acronix is a cheap drunk. Get a couple shots into him and he’s totally wasted. Meanwhile, Krux will drink you under the table.

-Also? Acronix is the most maudlin drunk ever. Seriously, even if he doesn’t have a care in the world beforehand, once he’s soused, he’ll be bawling like a child with a skinned knee and belting out Komm, süsser Tod at the top of his lungs.

-Acronix will deny that he listens to country music, but when he’s drunk, he will go into a litany of sad country songs. Stuff like Feed Jake, Little Rock, There Is No Arizona, I’m Gonna Drive You Out Of My Mind, pretty much everything from Reba’s For My Broken Heart album... 

-Acronix is a total memelord.

-When Krux needs to calm down and/or relax, he’ll go fishing. Acronix finds it stupid and boring. Meanwhile, when Acronix needs to chill out, he’ll go hide somewhere quiet with his BorgPad and play Quell. He has all four. (And he WILL collect all the clocks in Quell: Memento, you just watch!)

-Acronix is Team Instinct on Pokemon GO.

-Both twins go nuts over fob watches. (For Acronix, the geekier the better.)

-Acronix prefers cats, while Krux is a dog person.

-Acronix won’t admit it, but he relies a lot on his brother for, well, everything. Now that Krux is so much older than him, he’s secretly terrified of what’s going to happen when Krux almost inevitably predeceases him. He has no idea how he’s going to get by without him. This worry is why he tends to be short-tempered lately. (Well, that and the fact that being defeated and stripped of their powers is still a fresh wound for him...)

-Also, Acronix is actually desperately lonely. He has no friends and can no longer really relate to his brother. He tries to fill the void with social media, but it only helps a little.

-Acronix has never killed anyone, not even during the Serpentine War. He sometimes boasts that if he did, it wouldn’t affect him at all. (It totally would, though.) Krux, on the other hand, HAS killed someone, and it messed him up but good. (Acronix has no idea, and no one is ever finding that body...) Krux does his best to keep his brother from following in his footsteps because he doesn’t want him going through what he did, regardless of the reasons.

-Acronix’s blog is nothing but memes and shitposts. Unbeknownst to either, Jay is one of his followers. Also, he found Kai’s Chirp profile and trolls him mercilessly. Whenever Kai blocks him, he just makes a new account and starts over. (Even Krux will admit that the trolling is kinda funny.)

-Also on the topic of Acronix’s blog, he keeps a side blog where he posts all the pictures he takes with his BorgPad. They’re actually quite artistic, for the most part.

-Acronix is a worse cook than Cole. For example, Cole's cooking can actually be called edible, and it usually doesn’t explode. Acronix will readily admit that the things he makes are unfit for human consumption. He shouldn’t be let within five miles of a kitchen. He’d starve if Krux weren’t around to feed him.

-On that note, Krux is an excellent cook. Acronix’s favourite thing in the whole world is his brother’s sushi. (As illustrated here by my friend Blysk!)

-Krux’s pickled beetroot tea may very well be the finest in all of Ninjago, but Acronix still doesn’t like it very much. His brother makes him drink it often, though. (Possibly in retaliation for dragging him to karaoke all the time. :3) (ShinyShiny9 and I are jointly responsible for this one.)

-Acronix wasn’t always the competent, confident fighter he is today. When he was a child, he was actually a shy, anxious, socially awkward momma’s boy. Krux honestly hasn’t changed all that much since childhood.

-Acronix has a massive sweet tooth. (Seriously, hide your candy, Lloyd. :3) Krux prefers foods that are either spicy, bitter or sour.

-There is one technological advancement from the past 40 years which both twins can agree upon was a good thing: indoor plumbing.

-On that note, one of the first things Acronix did after being introduced to it was take a nice long, hot shower and wash his hair with modern shampoo and conditioner. He was thrilled with the results. (He is very proud of his hair. He styles it himself.)

-Acronix was one of those kids who used to spin around in circles until he got so dizzy he either fell over or threw up. (Sometimes both.) :P

-Whenever Acronix made himself puke, Krux would take the chance to dump a bucket of (preferably ice cold) water on his brother’s head. His excuse was that he was helping him clean up, but in fact, he just thought his brother was an idiot and deserved what he got.

-Acronix’s love for future technology also includes swivel chairs... :B

-Acronix has a large scar on his left side, from an incident during the Serpentine War. He refuses to be specific about how he got it. Even Krux doesn’t know the whole story.

-Krux doesn’t get sick very often. In the 40 years he spent waiting for Acronix to show up, he might have been ill three times. Acronix, on the other hand, has a miserable time during cold and flu season.

-Both twins can sew. (Acronix sometimes does embroidery when Krux isn’t looking... :B)

-Both twins are ambidextrous, though Acronix tends to favour his left hand and Krux his right.

-And now for something completely different! When it comes to Vermillion, the colour of the snakes decides how venomous they are. The orange and brown Vermillion aren’t all that deadly, but their bite can still make you very sick. The red ones are deadly poisonous, and a bite from one can kill you in less than half an hour.

Coffee or tea: I actually can’t stand coffee (which is almost hilarious considering where I currently work), except coffee ice cream in mud pie! So though I don’t go out of my way to drink it often, I’d take tea if offered, but I tend to like sweet/’dessert teas’ (David’s Tea has some AMAZING flavors!).

Books or movies: Hmm... I like both, so I suppose it depends on the content. There’s excellent & horrible versions of both, lol.

Windows or Mac: Windows all the way! (Not perfect, but I like it much better than Mac, which is almost always WAY more expensive)

DC or Marvel: DC for Batman, Marvel for X-Men (though I don’t read the comics or anything, and have mixed feelings on the movies, lol).

Xbox or PlayStation: PlayStation 1 & 2 will always hold a very special place in my heart... but once I started dating my then-boyfriend/now-husband, I made the switch to X-Box (ah love, LOL). I haven’t been on for quite a while, but hit me up if anyone would like my X-Box name! (Most likely I’ll be playing ‘Fallout 4′... there’s a LOT of stuff I still have to do in the game, lol!)

Dragon Age or Mass Effect: ...I actually haven’t played either... yet.  ::looks down bashfully::  They’re definitely on my list of ‘Series I Have to Play’, but I am waaaay behind in my video games since starting my fanfic, lol.

Night owl or early riser: I used to be an early riser long ago... but over time became more of a night owl. Now I get up early for work... but I hate it, lol. I wouldn’t want to get up later though, b/c that would mean getting out of work later. ...I like my ‘me time’, LOL.

Cards or chess: I have no idea how to play chess, and only know a few card games (Blackjack, Go Fish, Bullsh*t). ...I do LOVE ‘Cards Against Humanity’, though! (...I’m pretty ruthless w/ my answers.  *XD  )

Chocolate or vanilla: Usually chocolate, BUT it depends what the dessert/food is.

One episode per week or binge watching?: If I’m being totally honest, I tend to binge watch, lol.

Heroes or Villains?: Hmm... again, depends. I don’t mean to be indecisive, I’m sorry - I just have people that I love in both, lol. TYPICALLY though, I’d say heroes (though I love a good sarcastic/humorous one, lol).

Notebook or on PC typing?: PC - laptop if I can choose (tablet for being away from home, like at a family member’s house... I am such a geek,LOL).

The X-Files or Supernatural?: I’ve never seen Supernatural, & haven’t seen The X-Files for MANY years... but I remember liking The X-Files until the very end. Don’t remember liking the last season too much (same w/ ‘Fringe’, if anyone’s seen that).

Winter or Summer?: Definitely summer hands down! I hate winter. Christmas is absolutely my FAVORITE holiday & I like a dusting of snow to look pretty - but after that, I want SUMMER, lol! (Though fall colors are beautiful too!)

Cats or Dogs?: LOVE dogs, especially huskies! (I squeal like a little girl, it’s almost embarrassing, LOL). I discovered in the last couple years that cats make my nose itch & my eyes burn like crazy (though I still love my neighbor’s cat, lol)

Red or white wine?: Er... I can’t stand the taste of any alcohol. If I can even smell it in a drink, chances are good that I won’t like it. ...I know, I’m weird, lol.
