How’d you find this show and the fandom? How long have you been here?  I watched it when I was a little kid, and it was my very favorite then. (I’m a year younger than the show.) About 5 years ago, I figured out it was on Netflix (boo that it’s gone now!) and realized I still absolutely loved the show. I poked my head into fandom, saw a few people, was too shy to interact much, and drifted away again. But then I noticed a few people writing my pairing, so, I’m back.

What made you stick around? I just love Johnny and Roy so much, and everyone I’ve met in fandom has been lovely!

Who’s your favorite character? Roy DeSoto. :D Don’t worry, I love Johnny to the ends of the earth, but Roy is my guy.

Are you a shipping kind of person? If yes, what are your favorite ships? Absolutely! I’m happy to read and write gen stories, but shipping is where my heart is. Johnny/Roy (and also Johnny/Roy/Joanne) is my ship, though I certainly have considered others. Different combos of Dixie, Kel, and Joe have a lot of material to work with.

Favorite moment/scene/quote? Yes, you can pick more than one. Aaaah! I could be here all day. There’s a tiny moment in Camera Bug that I’ve mentioned before, when Johnny accidentally smacks Roy with his camera, then immediately reaches out and touches Roy’s head in apology. I think it’s actually a blooper that stayed in, which makes it even sweeter to me, because it shows off Randy and Kevin’s wonderful friendship.

Do you have a favorite episode? Feel free to pick one per season if you can’t decide. Uh. There are a lot of them, but I’ll stick to The Promotion for right now. I just absolutely love the way Roy is torn between doing what he thinks is right for his family, and what he truly wants to do for himself. And on the other side of things, Johnny is trying so hard to do what he thinks is best for Roy, which is encouraging him to go for it, even though the idea of Roy leaving is completely gutting him. And then, Roy choosing to stay for Johnny (and himself) is just...ugh. Beautiful.

Most underrated character, either among the fandom or one the writers never utilized to their full potential? I do think he’s gaining traction in the fandom, but definitely Morton. As I rewatch the show I like him more and more all the time. They did a lot of really good things with him, but also some not so good things, and yes, it would have been nice if he’d had more good storylines.  And then also for myself, I hadn’t realized how much I love Captain Stanley. In a cast full of great voices, his is my very favorite. And mmm, the man is sexy when he’s in command of a scene!

One thing you’d have liked to see more (or less) of in the show? I would have liked if they’d spent more time showing us Roy and Johnny treating each other when they got hurt. They always tend to cut away to the hospital when it’s serious. Now, Roy hovering in the treatment room in Nuisance was lovely, but that was the exception, not the rule. From all of the ‘Johnny whump’ fic I’ve seen posted, I’d guess the fandom would have also liked more time spent on those moments. As far as less - less sirens. Oh, boy. Way less time spent on traveling to the scene with those sirens.

Do you have a fanwork recommendation for us? Fic, art, video, whatever? Everything by guardy and hitchcock_winter. If you're up for some gen angst, I adore Requiem by dee_ayy on AO3.

Any fanworks you’d like to see? I'd like to see the ones I've started finished. :D. Just, more Johnny/Roy in general. And some more Roy whump. Because Johnny can't have it all, can he?

Any favorite headcanons you’d like to tell us about? Johnny bought that damn house because he wanted Roy to have it. He just, you know, got caught up in things and went about it a little screwy.

I think in the current climate, especially within the context of the last 24hrs, words and timing matter. And in this instance, I think SL should’ve worded that quote better because it can be taken both ways depending on how you read it.

I’m not sure what the intent behind it was, personally I don’t care cause I don’t follow SL, I just checked it out to see the quote. But yeah I can see both sides of the analysis and how it could be construed either way.

In much the same way mental health is complex, words and their meanings are too. They really need to be careful with how they arrange them and how they read when put out into a very divisive environment.

yeah, as it always goes with ‘seeing both sides’, choosing the more divisive argument (that they’re ill-intentioned and could do better) in this situation, imo, is less helpful. if this were a one-off situation with SL, i’d be less prickly but these are likely the same anons who simply want to find reasons to hate brittany.

now, i’m going to say this at length in this ask response (please know it’s no hate towards you because i can see you’re trying to play devils advocate for whatever reason) and i hope this puts some things to rest:

first—brittany snow is a public figure whose every move tends to be scrutinized. i too scrutinize and rightly so because she has a platform (2 million followers, almost 3, on instagram is nothing to scoff at) and she chooses to use it in certain ways. and sometimes those ways are not...the best ways. i say this is a poc and i say this as somebody who is passionate about advocacy, civil rights, and important issues in today’s climate. i understand that silence is absolutely sometimes the worst route that a person can take and i’ve had issues with her regarding that before. but honestly, especially recently, i think she has shown rather vividly that she doesn’t support trump and that she is definitely not republican-leaning. that being said, of course people are allowed to be upset with a lack of vocal support. however, people don’t need to be disrespectful about it towards her.

second, as i said before, september letters is not an advocate/civil rights organization. they are a mental wellness organization. they are akin to those tumblr accounts that post only calming or positive messages and sometimes that’s what people need on their timeline in times of turmoil. don’t like? don’t look to SL to get your dose of news or vigilance. per the ask i got from @pyresrpgear, if you read into that insta post as suggested, that is definitely more in line with what we know about brittany and what we know about september letters. september letters, to put it bluntly, is one of the most bland mental health initiatives to exist and it seems like it was designed that way to be palatable and accessible. scroll past their posts if it doesn’t apply to you. hell they didn’t even post about voting when elections came around. they literally post almost every single day and i wouldn’t be surprised if it was running on some kind of schedule or a queue. or that an unpaid intern posts when britt is too busy to post herself. the post that everybody’s getting into a tizzy about is literally borrowed from another instagram account, this one in particular. i had to scroll down a little bit to find that post, which tells me they likely had their post in their back pocket for a little while and didn’t *just* go hunting for something like that to affirm their nefarious agenda of disparaging against those affected by yesterday’s events or dismissing the importance of accountability in this heated political atmosphere.

third, of course words and meanings and timing are important! i agree wholeheartedly as both a human being and somebody who literally studied rhetoric for my BA and MA. but when it comes to a point where people are literally finding fault with *everything* SL does, including right down to the pictures used (ie complaining that they dont want to see pictures of the beach or surfing), well it sounds like SL isn’t the one with an intention issue. 

fourth, for context as to how i see it: i, as a woman of colour, sometimes like seeing the affirmation that it’s not my burden to shoulder to educate another person on their ignorance. i, as a woman of colour, sometimes like seeing the affirmation that i cannot control another person’s actions even when i do my damn best to try and be a good force in this world. when i see posts like that, i honestly don’t think it applies to republicans, nor do i think it gives them an out. and if they feel like they deserve rest or an out for being pieces of shit, then that’s on them and they’re in for a rude awakening. if you’re concerned about what’s emboldening republicans and what emboldens trump’s fanbase and you think it comes down to september letters, then please also take issue with literally every single one of these types of accounts, which are seemingly endless. 

i just think that if you advocate so hard for the complexity of words and the complexity of mental health and the complexity of timing, then you shouldn’t be given a free pass to simply shit on something just because you hate the person who runs the account. that’s not how life works, especially when you probably know next to nothing about the person. sometimes there are obvious moments where call-outs work, but i don’t think this is one of those moments.

MFackenthal Interviews Maxwell (From Cordonian’s Gone Wild)

I am so excited to bring you this final and unexpected interview with Maxwell (from @cordoniansgonewild).  Finally - some true excitement for this new social season.  AND you get to learn if Bas has any real interest in Megs ;)  Many thanks to @ao719 and @cocomaxley for all of their help with Max’s answers! 

“Hey Max!  Put me down, love,” I said laughing.  “I was out of town for your last one, I’m so sorry.  Hey!  Since you’re here - want to do an interview for the new social season?” 

“Oh heck yeah, Megs!  Let’s do it.  Liam!  We’re going to be over here doing my interview.  Come on over when you’re done.  You know Megs is going to make you look good, stop worrying so much,” Max said enthusiastically. 

We walked over to the MFackenthal set and both sat on the couch.  I dropped my voice to a whisper, “How’s Liam doing with his new responsibilities?  Is he processing Constantine’s death?”

“You’re so sweet to ask, Megs,” Max says in something much closer to a stage whisper.  “King Constantine had a bad rap. I'd gotten him to laugh a couple of times. It looked so unnatural, ya know, like it hurt his face to smile but it was funny too.  Liam seems to be doing well.  He said his interview with you was delightful.” 

Getting down to business, I asked, “So, by now it’s essentially a well known fact that these changes to the social season came about during a night of drinking.  Is this - ”

“Megs, I’m just going to stop you there.  Drunken words are sober thoughts. Unless you're Drake. Sober or drunk, his thoughts always just come right out.  AmIright or Am I right?” Maxwell interrupted. 

“I can’t argue with you there, Max.  Do you know how this is going to work?  Will there be an order in which men choose the women?  Will there be rose ceremonies throughout?” 

“You’re asking me about details, Megs?  I’m just here to have a good time. I don’t care who picks who first or what not. I just hope to see some peacocks.  As for a rose ceremony, I hope so! That would be awesome!  Oh!  I just thought of another way to dance and present a rose to someone,” Max provided. 

Then, Max got up and did a little breakdance right there in front of me - I wish I had been recording.  At the end of which, he grabbed a flower out of the vase on the desk on my set and presented it to me.  A stream of water flew off the stem and got me a bit wet, but I couldn’t help but laugh and accept the flower that I had purchased myself at the Cordonian farmer’s market that morning.  

“So what does a lucky lady have to do to get your attention, Max?” 

Sitting back down after yelling for someone to get me a napkin to wipe up the small mess he had accidentally made, he taps his pointer finger against his lips as he thinks.  “Someone who loves to dance and loves peacocks....and who can handle my brothers constant nagging. Oh! I like redheads too. You better watch out, Liv!” Then, as if noticing for the first time that I am a redhead, he went on, “Oh - Are you joining the season, Megs?” He asked with an eyebrow wiggle. 

I just shook my head no with a smile. “What are you looking forward to in this social season?” I ask.  

“Dancing, duh! Lord Maxwell Perceval Beaumont's gotta show off his killer dance moves. I hope there's a dance completion. I would so own that!”

“And what are you hoping to avoid in this social season?” 

“Avoid? Hmmm...I am not an avoider. I look forward to everything. The food, music, dancing...I'm just excited for all of it!”

“Your enthusiasm is truly refreshing.  Do you know how the ladies will be selected to enter the social season?”

“No clue, Megs. How do you think I should select a potential spouse?  Oohh, what if they had a talent competition, then evening gown...would it be too much to ask for a bathing suit round too?”

“Like a Mrs. Cordonia pageant?” 

“Brilliant, Megs!  Yes! Just like Miss Universe. I can see it now!  We can do the interviews ON YOUR SHOW!  Can you see it???  I know you’re trying to get the media rights to the show!” 

I was laughing so hard I was crying at this point.  “There’s no way Liam … no, there’s no way DRAKE would ever allow that to happen.   Okay, let’s get back to some logistics … What if two or more of you fall for the same person?” 

“I think we need to be more worried about two or more of them falling for us,” Max said with a smirk.

“Oh really?  Well, will the ladies be allowed to say who they are most interested in?” I asked.  

“They probably won’t be able to contain themselves. I mean...we’re a damn good looking group if I do say so myself. Well...most of us. *cough* Neville *cough*

At this point, I lost all of my professionalism, if one could say I had had any in this interview up until now.  I knew what he had said, but I couldn’t just let it go … “What was that, dear Max?” 

“Oh nothing. Had a frog in my throat.” 

At this point Maxwell laughs a little harder than he should have at his own joke.  But he’s not wrong … Neville does look like a frog. (To quote Maxwell - “amiright?”) 

(reader’s note: Neville turned down an invitation to be interviewed after he said his photoshoot went “poorly” and he didn’t like the journalistic angle I was bringing to these interviews … he said it should have been Ana DeLuca doing these interviews. I assume he was trying to start a fight between Ana and I.  I would never subject Ana to Neville though.  Anyways … )

When I could stop laughing, I asked, “Max, what do you think, will the social season end with multiple weddings?” 

“Damn, I hope so!” he responded.  “That would be awesome. Picture it, Megs.” He scooted nest to me on the couch and put his arm around my shoulders and used his other arm to paint a picture, “the cathedral would turn into a fortress of love.  You know, I better start choreographing a flash mob or 4!”  

“One per wedding?” I asked.  

“You got it, Megs!” 

“Well, you certainly have a vision, Max.  Will groups or organizations be sponsoring the women?” 

“Oh shit.  Yeah. … House Beaumont is still looking for suitors. But don't tell Bertrand we’re still looking cause he's gonna be pissed. That was my job …”

“Has anyone or any organization tried to influence how you will choose a spouse, Max?”  

“What?! Absolutely not. Well...except Bertrand. He tried to convince me not to be in it...something about ruining our reputation, I don’t know,” Max said.  

Max still had one arm around me.  I looked around the room and quietly asked my next question.  “Has … umm … has Bastien asked about me at all?”

At this, Maxwell sit back and cups his hands around his mouth and loudly says: “HEY BAS! MEGS THINKS YOU’RE A SEXY STUD! YOU SINGLE?!”

Immediately, I’m pulling Maxwell’s arms down from around his mouth and shushing him. When I dare to look over, Liam is doubled over laughing as he points at Bastien’s beet red face.

Bastien walks over and says, “Maxwell, truly an inside voice is all that is necessary.” Then, turning to me he says, “Hello Megs.  I was going to try to pull you aside after your interview, but … I was wondering if you might be free Friday evening, starting around 6:30?” 

“I’ll make sure I am, Bas,” was my response.

“Good, I’ll pick you up at your place then,” Bastien said with a small smile before turning and following Liam who was already walking out of the building. 

“Hells yeah, Megs! You have a date with Bastien!!” Max said loudly, giving me a playful shove in the arm.  “I’m guessing you don’t want to be sponsored by House Beaumont then.  Too bad,” Max said with a wink.  

“Good luck finding those ladies, Max!” I said, giving Max a final hug. “I have a good feeling that you’ll find some ladies to sponsor and this season will surprise everyone.”

Aiura knew that red strings were common in people.

Sure, a little pointless since, as far as she knew, she was the only one who could see them, but common. The problem was out of the eternity of PK Academy she'd only seen three.

And she saw the third on the day (L/n) transferred to her class.

Saiki and (L/n) both sigh as they set their bags next to their desks and sit down. Saiki turns to see (L/n) yawning before turning to Saiki. Bags lined the underneath of her (e/c) eyes.

"Oh...hey Saiki.." She smiles drowsily. Saiki feels his face heat up at the cute action but is eliciting to ignore it. Nope. Not happening at all. He's not sure what you're talking about.

"How late did you get home last night?" He asks.

"Around 10.." (L/n) shrugs. "I stopped at a store on my way home and then I was up doing homework for while... But it's alright! I had some...caffeine earlier.."

"I'm sorry." Saiki apologizes. He wasn't even sure why he was apologizing. For keeping her out late? For making her take care of him?

"Nah, don't apologize. It's alright." She gives a heartwarming smile and Saiki- for once- thanks god that Teruhashi has joined the two to interrupt the conversation.

"(Y/n), are you okay?" Teruhashi asks worriedly. "You seem tired."

"Yeah." (L/n) nods. "I just..got to sleep a bit late.."

"How late?" Teruhashi asks.

"Ehehehe.... 4am...?" (L/n) laughs awkwardly. Teruhashi looks unamused.

"(Y/n)..!" She begins to reprimand.

"Kokomi!" (L/n) mocks her tone. "I had a lot of homework."

Teruhashi sighs and shakes her head. "You need better time management. How much of that did you spend playing on your phone?"

"..Ehheheh.." (L/n) begins to awkwardly laugh again. The poor girl obviously needed sleep. School started at 7am, she probably barely got 2 or 3 hours of sleep.

Before anyone else can reprimand the poor, sleep deprived girl, the teacher walks in the room, settling the students as they return to their seats.

"Good morning, class." The teacher begins.

"Good morning.." The class responds. Saiki only gives partial attention as she begins her lesson. He turns and sees (L/n) with her head in her hand and eyes half lidded as she drifts off. Saiki sighs as he nudges the girl under the desks with his foot. She snaps awake confused.

"Stay awake, idiot." Saiki reprimands, but there's a small grin on his face. (L/n) squints her eyes at him.

"Fine. Because you asked so nicely, Strawberry." She mutters under her breath, just loud enough for him to hear.

"...with that, you and your partner will choose a book from PK's library to report on.." The teacher continues to speak, as she writes on the chalkboard. "..due within two weeks from now. I have assigned your partners." Saiki feels the dread in his very soul. Ever since (L/n) showed up it felt like there were a lot of fanfiction cliches showing up and he wasn't sure how to feel about it.

The teacher begins listing partner pairs. "Kuboyasu and Kaido. Teruhashi and Yumerhara." She goes down the list of convenient pairs. "Mera and Hairo. Saiki and (L/n)." Ah, there's the cliche money maker. The teacher continues listing the names of background characters. Like Takahashi and Saiko. We don't care about Saiko in this fanfiction.

Anyway, (L/n) sleepily turns to Saiki as the teacher finishes her list and lets the partner pairs discuss. "So...what book are we doing?"

Saiki shrugs. "What kind of books do you read?" He asks. He's only doing this because its a normal conversation. With a normal girl. Who he is not growing fond of what so ever. Stop jumping to conclusions, reader.

(L/n) shrugs. "Any, really.." She hums for a second. "What was that one book..."

"Hm?" Saiki hums curiously.

"I don't remember the title.." (L/n) leans her head in her hand. "But I remember a quote. It was something like.. "'I see two lovers looking over the cauldron of hell. Are they contemplating a double suicide? This means their love will end in hell." I couldn't stop laughing.'"

Saiki thinks for a moment. He'd probably heard the line before due to telepathy.

"It's Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto." Saiki responds after a minute.

"Yeah, that one!" (L/n) snaps her fingers. "Have you read it before?" She asks.

"No. I just.. I've heard of it, before." Saiki lies. No, he has not read it, he just used his powers to find the book for the poor girl.

"It's probably in the library, wanna do that book?" (L/n) asks. Saiki nods. "Cool..cool.."

The homeroom bell rang and Saiki had no chance to go anywhere else before (L/n) starts dragging him by the sleeve to the library. "Come on! Better to start this now." (L/n) weakly beckons as they walk into the library. "Now where the hell is that book."

Saiki shrugs as (L/n) walks off to look for it. He could use clairvoyance and- yep, already found the book. Saiki walks over and grabs two copies of the book- one for him and one for (L/n).

"Alright, let's go." Saiki sighs. (L/n) snaps around with a 'are you fucking kidding me' face.

"I- oh what the hell. Let's go, Strawberry." (L/n) yawns, because clearly sleeping through the entirety of mathematics class was not enough for the poor girl. Saiki can't help but feel a small grin come across his face as the shorter girl takes a copy from his hand and begins walking to the librarian.

After the very rushed library trip begins a trek home with Nendo, Kaido, and Kuboyasu trailing along. Three annoyances and one tolerable girl.

"Hey, we should go get some ramen!" Nendo offers, as he does every day.

"Nah..I'm exhausted.. plus, I don't have money on me." (L/n) smiles.

"You want to get ramen every day, Nendo. Plus, I have homework and cram school." Kaido rolls his eyes.

"I've got to go...meet with someone." Kuboyasu excuses, which is code for "something that's entirely delinquent related that the author does not want to write."

"Damn.. okay. What about you, partner?" Nendo asks. Crap, he didn't have an excuse.

"I-"

"Actually, Saiki was gonna head over to my place so we could work on that book project." (L/n) excuses him, setting a hand on his shoulder as she looks up at Nendo. Saiki looks at her with adoration for a second- thank whatever God sent this girl to be the saint she is.

"That's not due for like, two weeks." Kuboyasu points out.

"We're not going to college for another year and Shun's still got his applications filled out." (L/n) comments.

"H-Hey! You know that's cause of my mom!" Kaido argues, face bright red. Saiki found the usual bickering to be quiet boring.. he figured he should entertain himself.

Hm.. maybe..

"Yeah, I know, I know." (L/n) grins. "Still funny."

Saiki looks at Kuboyasu. With boredom he's decided to see everyone's likability for (L/n). ..Huh. Solid 54. Not bad. He turns to Nendo next.

"Haha! Tell me, what college are you going to, runt?" Nendo asks. ..Hm. 58. Not too far off. He turns to Kaido.

"Shut up!" Kaido tries to elbow Nendo yet it does absolutely nothing. As per usual. ..94. Jesus. Saiki knew the two were close by some miracle but jeez. Only person left in the group was him, and he was confident in his emotions...

"Hey, this is where Saiki and I gotta split. See you guys!" (L/n) waves as they turn a corner.

"See you around."

"See you, partner!!! See you, friend!!!"

"Bye Saiki, (Y/n)!"

Saiki turns to the girl who stares off into space as they now walk quietly. Her (e/c) eyes were half lidded with exhaustion and she was beginning to fall asleep while walking she was so tired.

"Hey, Strawberry..." (L/n) starts, dragging out his nickname.

"What is it, (L/n)?" Saiki sighs.

"I'm tired... wanna carry me..?" She grins half-assedly. Saiki rolls his eyes.

"No."

"Come oooon."

"Absolutely not." Saiki refuses. (L/n) pouts cutely and crosses her arms for a second, deep in thought. 'Well, I could just..' Oh no. (L/n) falls out of Saiki's line of vision for a second but he isn't necessarily surprised when the girl just jumps on his back without warning. He sigh heavily as he stops walking.

"Hah, can't avoid it now, Strawberry!" (L/n) grins over his shoulder.

"I could just drop you." He sighs.

"Please don't."

Saiki rolls his eyes into oblivion and continues walking with the sleepy girl on his back. She's quiet but her thoughts roll on. 'Hm..his hair is soft. And he smells like vanilla."

Saiki's face warms up. For some odd, unrelated reason. No sir, not related to that at all. Not sure what you're talking about. Out of the corner of his eye, he spots a..number..?

Ah, that's right, he was using the likability to see how everyone felt about (L/n). The tracker floated in the corner of his vision, a solid "70" written on the board of it. Weird. The last person around (L/n) was only Saiki.

It must've just glitched out. Don't get happy here. His powers have just been.. wonky lately. That's it. As he continues to walk, dismissing the totally glitchy meter, the girl on his back slowly begins to drift off.

𝕥𝕚𝕞𝕖𝕤𝕜𝕚𝕡

When you woke from your sleep, not even realizing how comfortably you dozed off on the poor boy, he was standing in front of your apartment building. "Will you get off now?" He asks impatiently. You giggle and slide off his back, landing hard on your feet.

"Thank you for the Uber." You grin. He gives you a less then amused look and you can't help but laugh at the unamused face t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶ ̶h̶a̶d̶ ̶c̶o̶m̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶a̶d̶o̶r̶e̶.̶ "Sorry, sorry. But really. Thanks for tolerating that."

Saiki thinks to himself for a second. "It's...alright. There's more annoying people I know." He sighs. You look at him for a second- did he just compliment you? Did Saiki Kusuo, the ever done-with-your-shit tsundere, just give you a backwards ass compliment?

No.

Don't lie to us, Saiki.

You smile at him after a second. "Well- I have to tend to..something. I don't know. I probably have work to do, so.. bye!" You smile, waving as you walk into the building. He waves slightly before walking away. You climb the stairs up to the second floor, and unlock your door, popping in and kicking off your shoes. You drop your bag at the door.

"OH my god FINALLY." You scream to yourself. Yes, you lived alone, parents...parents and siblings long gone. You shook the thought of them from your head as you wandered through your apartment to your kitchen as you hummed some American song from the 2000s to yourself. Opening the kitchen cabinets revealed..

..well, not much. Shit. You sigh to yourself. You hadn't gone shopping in forever, which, was a given since you'd found yourself so busy. Life seemed to become hectic since you met Saiki but that was alright. You thought he was cool. You pause as you close your cabinets.

The thought of his eyes crossed your mind. They weren't special, if anything bland, but there's nights where the purple color is all you can see in your head. You weren't necessarily sure why. His eyes were just.. pretty. You should tell him some time. You shake the thought from your head as you walk to your bedroom, choosing to change out of your school uniform.  

After having chosen a comfortable outfit that fit your style, you grabbed your keys, wallet, phone and put on your shoes. It's shopping time, baby. There was a convenience store you usually went to about 20 minutes away from your apartment. So you went down the stairs, nearly falling on your face quiet a few times, and exited your apartment building and began the trek to the store.

As you walk, your thoughts begin to wander. You'd never think before that at 16 you'd be living alone in your own apartment. Thinking back to the events that lead you here...

Well, you didn't like to think of it much. The thought that truly, you were the last person in your family alive. In some fucked up way, it could remind you of that one game...What Remains of Edith Finch? You push the thought from your head, chosing to hum whatever song comes to mind first.

You didn't really like dwelling on the depressing things of it all. Of course, sometimes, it couldn't be helped, but if you had the choice..

You enter the store as you clear your thoughts, arriving at your destination finally, and hopefully avoiding the author's shitty monolouging. You walk through, grabbing the necessities, and by necessities I mean junk foods that would definitely disappoint Hairo if he saw this. But he is not here, so you are free to grab an extra package of coffee jelly and an extra box of pocky.

You check out with only a slight judgmental look from the cashier and begin your trek home. We're just speeding through this chapter! As you walk along you feel something soft brush against your leg. You look down and what do you see? A cute little cat!

The white cat has violet eyes that cant help but remind you of Saiki and a collar with the label 'Sai.' You bend down, setting down your two bags, and pick up the cat. "Why, hello there!" you smile.

Sai stared back deadpanned. "Well, you remind me of someone I know an awful lot." You snort, setting the cat back on the ground and petting its head before picking up your bags and continuing to walk. After about 5 minutes, you notice the cat is still following you. You stop to turn to it for a second as it stares back up at you.

"You're awfully persistent, huh?" You smile. "I'm sorry, kitty, my landlord doesn't allow cats." You continue walking.

..And so does this damn cat. He's persistent and every time you tried to lose him in a doorway he'd dart in seconds before the door shut and nearly scared the shit out of you every time. Which is why he is now sitting patiently on your living room couch.

Okay, look, first of all, Saiki has a PERFECTLY good explanation. And second of all, this is not his fault. At all. He wasted his precious time to turn into a cat because Amp was bothering him once he got home. Shenanigans happened, and Amp got mad at him and he lied that he was going home, and that he didn't live at his house, so that Amp would stop bothering him. Amp would not believe him so to sell the story he just followed (L/n) home because she wouldn't kick a cat to the curb. Thankfully, she didn't but now Saiki is here.

The problem is that (L/n) won't take her eyes off him so he can't just teleport and she's not opening the door any time soon. Which is an issue because Saiki would like to get home and play his game. But no. He gets stuck in this situation. Fuck you, Author.

(L/n) turns and picks up Saiki, or should I say Sai, and he can't help but sigh and curse Amp for leading him into this situation. He can't move much because he can't control his strength well like this and generally it'll just end badly. So he can't.. really do much as (L/n) sets what she assumes to be a normal cat in her lap and pets him gently. All he can think right now is 'please kill me.'

"Hm.. you've gotta belong to someone. I haven't seen you around before, kitty, are you lost?" She asks, as if the fucking cat would respond. Saiki is very bitter right now. And does not want to be pet. He squirms out of her grip and winds up across the couch. "Yikes, okay, I got it."

She sighs. "God, I can't go finding some cat owner.. I've got homework and shit.." (L/n) runs a hand through her hair as she turns around. Fuck it, that's all he needs.

You turn back around. "We- What the fuck?!" The cat was gone. You snapped your head around, he didn't even seem to be in the apartment before. What- what the actual fuck?? Were you hallucinating??

..Yeah.. We'll call it hallucinating. You sigh as you flop at your kitchen table. You had homework.. and commissions.. and you were supposed to reread Kitchen. You glance at the book tossed to the side on your table. You'd read it once but that was years ago, when you were practicing Japanese. You were, simply put, stressed and tired as hell. It'd be another late night for you and just..

You'd think that through later, you told yourself, as you pull some bullshit math worksheet from your bag, pencil tapping as your eyes scan the problems. You were stressed but life was good. It was odd...

This stretch of happiness couldn't last long.

My thoughts when I first saw Ghost in this order: BABY BOY! Christ couldn’t someone have washed him a bit at least

Okay is it just me or did Jon’s speech sound so hecking odd?! Like not even the speech itself but the way he was talking? Was it just Kit with early onset laryngitis or does Jon just really hate giving public speeches? (If it’s the latter, can’t really fault you there, cause I’m right there with ya buddy.)

I think the way they did the burning of the pyre scene was nice, each character sending off the person they had a connection with i.e Sam and Edd, Jon and Lyanna, Arya and Beric

So looks like Dany has started a bit of a PR campaign with the legitimization of Gendry and I have to admit, she’s on the right track here. Making it a public spectacle, starting off with the whole you’re dad sucks and tried to kill me spiel before finishing with but I’m making you a lord because I’m the queen and I can. 

And I absolutely love that they have Sansa understanding exactly what just went on there because if anyone knows how to play the game it’s my baby girl

I highkey liked that Arya didn’t really give two shits about being at the feast because it’s just so her to not want any praise for what she did and I just—I love her.

Oh my GOD the jealous Sansa in this episode was way too gd real and as soon as she walks out Jon looks after her and this is just prime fic material right here

This Jaime/Brienne/Tyrion/Pod drinking game scene was real cute and funny up until that virgin quip then it was just cringe as hell. CRINGE I TELL YOU!

I thought it was interesting to see Dany’s reaction to the love Jon receives from the northmen and how later on she pretty much says she’s never not been adored by her people before and it’s a really tough pill for her to swallow. Whether you’re a Dany fan or not, it’s easy to see how very out of place she is in the North and in Winterfell. It’s not a strike against her, it’s just a basic fact that she doesn’t belong there while Jon very much does belong in the North and I think this scene did a terrific job of highlighting all of this.

And then we get this ominous shot of Varys side-eyeing Dany while she side-eyes Tyrion and Jaime as well as Jon enjoying the feast with his people until she seemingly can’t take it anymore and promptly leaves the feast. I almost feel bad for her. Almost.

Lmao Tormund crying over Brienne. Funny, but once again: the horse is dead guys, time to quit beating it!

Okay so I was actually enjoying this Sansa and Sandor scene until he fucking brought up what Ramsey did to her like that and now I really want  to reach into my fucking screen and strangle him.

The look on Sansa’s face when he says she’s changed is honestly heartbreaking. It’s like in that moment she fully realizes exactly how much she’s been forced to change and all the trauma she’s gone through and just how fucking cruel the world turned out to be and I just—I need a minute.

Ah, Gendry and Arya. First off—Damn, boy didn’t wasted any time did he? His eagerness was cute but it felt a bit cheesy to me. As for Arya’s response, I think it makes total sense for her to answer the way she did. She might love him or what have you but since season one she’s always wanted to be a lady warrior and not someone’s wife which is valid as fuck. She’s right, it isn’t her. It doesn’t mean they’ll never cross paths again or that they don’t love each other. Arya’s basically just the Westerosi version of a modern millennial woman.

Jaime and Brienne—You sound quite jealous!! I’m not a huge shipper of it but I think it’s cute and honestly it’s funny to see people who actually claimed they were strictly platonic (sorry wut?) eating their words but the whole thing was a little awkward. But maybe it was meant to be considering it was Brienne’s first time

We can, I’ve just told you how. Jesus, Dany was a bit manic this whole scene but that line and the absolute drain of emotion we see on her face? Uh oh.

Sansa says hey maybe we should let the soldiers rest a little before jumping right back into another war, Dany somehow hears betrayal in that, goes to KL anyways and loses majorly. When will people learn to listen to the Queen in the North?

Not really digging that look Jon gave Sansa. I guess you could interpret it as Jon knowing Dany doesn’t like Sansa and he wants to keep her from harm at Dany’s hand so he’s trying to get her to keep a lid on it around the lady with crazy eyes and dragons or something, I have no idea. With that being said, D&D can have season 7-8 Jon. I will only be keeping season 1-6 Jon. Thank you.

Lmao did anyone else notice Jon moves the dragon chip to where he’s going and Greyworm moves it away?! Funny as well as dubious.

That look Sansa shoots Brienne when Tyrion mentions Jaime...she knows her friend just got some good good

I absolutely love that it’s Arya telling Jon all the hard truths. We don’t trust your queen. She’s not one of us. 

We didn’t get to see the reactions of Sansa and Arya finding out about Jon’s parentage. Disappointed but not surprised. Although I liked that they showed the contrast between Sansa and Arya reassuring Jon of his Starkness and Dany rejecting him as the last of her Targaryen family because of his claim.

The old Sandor/Arya team is back together and you know what? I aint mad. I wish Arya would have told her siblings she was leaving again though but it makes sense why she didn’t. I headcanon her and Sansa had a really emotional goodbye scene wherein Arya leaves her with a dagger and gives her a quick lesson on how best to use it and Sansa makes Arya a beautiful Stark cloak so she can have a piece of home with her where ever she goes.

Here comes all the Sansa betrayed Jon and told Tyrion!! posts. If that’s what you’re going to claim then you best drag not only Jon for telling Sansa and Arya but Dany for asking Jon to keep a secret like that from his family in the first place.

Sansa not wanting Jon to go south and getting defensive when Tyrion implies that Jon wouldn’t stay in Winterfell is everything. She loves him so much. Ugh. Someone help.

The ghost scene. We’re not gonna talk about it. WHERE’S THE REAL JON?! WHERE IS HE?!

Tyrion is sure trying to push this good queen Dany narrative. Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

Lmfao Euron’s smile was the creepiest/most unintentionally funny thing I’ve ever seen. AKA me reading all the leaks earlier.

Jesus, Dany has like eleven men left, no ships, and is now one dragon less. Should have listened to Sansa and held off for a bit, maybe?

Varys tells Dany she’s making a huge mistake and is putting thousands of innocent lives at risk. Her response? This is my destiny, I will serve it no matter the costs. Am I surprised? Not a bit. Will the antis find a way to justify even this? You bet.

Have you considered the best ruler might be someone who doesn’t want to rule? Why yes Varys, yes I have!

They’re not getting married Tyrion, drop it already. Jeez, you’re worse than the antis.

Poor Brienne. She’s reassuring him that he’s good, that he’s worthy of honor and redemption and although it’s something he’s been chasing after for a while now he ultimately chooses to reject the idea that he’s deserving of it. My eyes are all wet now.

Lmao Tyrion and Qyburn. You surrender! No, you surrender!

Oh, Missandei. I knew it was coming but that didn’t make it any easier to watch. And Greyworm’s reaction was fucking brutal. Christ.

Overall? This episode was bad. Like unquestionably bad. Like wow, I thought the last episode sucked but I guess D&D are eager to outdo themselves. I stand by my claim that the showrunners are flying through this season because they just want to wash their hands of the show already and uh, I mean I can’t really say I’m surprised.

Now that we're on this hiatus, do you mind telling us what you thought of each episode?

Okay, I know I’m super late to answer this but here I am! I’m not gonna go too in depth on them, but I do want to talk about them.

Treasure of the Found Lamp!

This one was amusing, and I absolutely love what they did with Djinn. I’m so so so glad they changed his name, too, as “Dijon” always bothered me, even as a kid. Also, the story of the lamp was very heartwarming! And seeing Selene again was fun, especially as she had to run around and we find out she’s a terrible liar lol (so she definitely had nothing to do with Della’s disappearance, I think we can all finally put that theory to rest).

The wild goose chase aspect was funny, coming from both sides, and I still think the actress on Ma Beagle’s TV looked vaguely like a character from PKNA so. But Djinn did not pull punches and them Beagles at least got hurt XD

Also. It kinda has a “the greatest treasure is family” vibe to it.

The Outlaw Scrooge McDuck!

As someone who loves Scrooge and loves Goldie, but is indifferent to Scroldie… I still loved this episode. It was great! It was also absolutely hilarious. And Gyro’s time traveling was amazing. Especially Scrooge’s sudden moment of realization when Gyro returned lol.

Louie’s gonna befriend Goldie! That makes me excited. I bet they’re gonna teach each other things that we haven’t even thought of (ie Louie values his family, while Goldie doesn’t even have a family. Maybe Goldie will officially join the Duck-McDuck family not through her strange but obviously antagonistically-romantic relationship with Scrooge, but through her friendship with and tutelage of Louie? Maybe he’s the one who shows her the importance of family and offers her a place in their family… it doesn’t mean giving up adventure, it just means always having somewhere she can call home, and people she can trust and rely on!).

I’m iffy about Jeeves’ redesign, and also his somewhat betrayal of Rockerduck, but I’ve never been like a hardcore fan of the two of them so it was easy for me to move on. I am curious, though, just how they’re gonna come back… guess Gyro’s not quite done with time travel shenanigans.

The only real gripe I have is Sheriff Marshal Cabrera. DON’T GET ME WRONG, I absolutely loved him. He’s a beautiful babby boy. But at the same time, he’s literally just. Fenton. I know he’s like. Fenton’s great grandfather (or maybe uncle, idk) or something. There should absolutely be similarities yes, but it felt like someone had taken the characters and placed them in an old west setting. That being said, I do love him, I just wish he’d been slightly more his own character. Like, maybe a little more like a mix of M’Ma and Fenton! Idk.

The 87 Cent Solution!

Okay, the episode was good. It was funny, and I enjoyed seeing Glomgold’s timestop shenanigans.

But the funeral scene? That wasn’t cool. I saw the “not really dead” twist coming, I think we all did, but no one thought to tell Donald? Donald thought that, so soon after finally making amends with his uncle, he had lost him for good.

And I get it. It’s meant to be a gag. It’s supposed to be funny. But it kinda really soured the rest of the episode for me. I hate to say that too, because it was a good and funny episode… I just… I can’t believe they did that to Donald. :(

The Golden Spear!

AGONY. Agony is how I feel about this one. Della made friends with the Lunarians! Actual friends! And then Penny made a bad choice, and Lunaris… damn you, Lunaris, you traitor.

All the things Della listed off, wanting to do with her kids and brother and uncle… they’re things the others have already done without her. That hit me in the feels.

AND THEN DONALD- AGH, I CAN’T EVEN. Poor Donald. He’s so stressed and his family loves him so much and just wanted him to have some peace. But alas, it was not to be. And now the fandom cries.

… Even if he really shouldn’t have climbed into that rocket but y’know. He didn’t MEAN to press buttons….

Nothing Can Stop Della Duck!

Della reunites with her boys and no one realizes Donald is gone. And we see Della trying to be a mom, and kinda failing miserably. But she’s trying, and she’s learning!

It really put to rest one of my biggest fears, that all of the triplets would accept her immediately (Louie showed serious hesitation through the entire episode, definitely coming from his place of insecurity that Dewey and Huey don’t share) and she’d be super-mom. She makes mistakes, and it’s acknowledged that she seems to be trying to be one of them rather than be their mother. It does feel awkward at times, and alien, like the boys are trying so hard to think she’s doing great when she’s really causing harm, but in the end when it comes down to it she’d do anything to protect them, and gives them the choice of letting her into their life. She doesn’t try and force her way in (as she kinda did at first, but came to realize this isn’t easy for them either).

Right now she feels kinda more like a cool aunt than a mom, but she’ll learn.

Raiders of the Doomsday Vault!

IS LUDWIG’S CONSCIOUS TRAPPED IN THE VAULT?! HE REACTED TO AND INTERACTED WITH THE PEOPLE OUTSIDE.

Anyway Scrooge and Glomgold’s parts were absolutely A+ hilarious. Della and Dewey bonding, they’re so much alike, but we see Dewey’s insecurity flare up- how he wants to impress Della, feeling like he has to earn her love. Even though she’s already loved them for ten years, even without ever knowing what they looked like.

Della has a moment of realization here, too. She looks down and realizes Dewey is in a dangerous situation. She realizes that Dewey is in danger. She questions if they’re doing something crazy, clearly thinking maybe we shouldn’t be doing this, but when Dewey quotes her “I’m your son, I can do anything!” she instead chooses to encourage him, not wanting to discourage him and possibly cause him to fall.

And then of course, her “exit strategy” thing. I honestly kinda feel like it’s a bit of an ass pull, but it at least makes a little sense. When you’re being hunted by a monster on the moon, you always want to have an escape route planned. Scrooge sees that, even if she’s the same ol’ Della she was before, she’s still changed. Ten years still changes you.

Friendship Hates Magic!

New Girl! New Girl! Violet’s pretty cool. At first she comes off as one of those “um, actually” people, but since I’m one of those “um, actually” people it’s pretty whatever to me lol. And Lena’s back! I’m super excited about that.

Lena gets a little jealous-possessive but who can blame her, Webby’s one of the few people who have always believed in her. And Webby spent so much time we never knew about trying to find ways to bring Lena back, to the point that it’s like clockwork.

The whole “being tormented by her own mind” thing was actually frightening in a way, and I’m just glad it all turned out alright. And now Webby isn’t just a fourth triplet, she’s the central member of her own trio. It’s great!

The Dangerous Chemistry of Gandra Dee!

Admittedly another plotline to be seen from far away. A good episode full of secondhand embarrassment, but dang Huey’s LUNGS.

I love Gandra’s design and personality. It’s pretty durn great. I love it! I just have one gripe. Warning, this is a bit of a rant.

Why can’t we let characters be feminine? By this I mean traditionally feminine. Dresses, makeup, shopping, high heels, giggling, soft and compassion and gentle and things I’m not, pinks and lilacs, etc. Yes, Webby’s favourite colour is pink and she likes glitter and wears skirts, she is pretty feminine. But she’s the only one, besides Roxanne Featherby (Featherly? I don’t remember, and that’s only arguably because of her clothes), to be even slightly feminine, and even then it can be argued she’s not all that traditionally feminine because, well… she’s the bruiser of the group. Which there’s absolutely nothing wrong with! A feminine bruiser absolutely works, and I love it, but looking at it from certain angles…

Most of the (non-villain) females, besides Webby, show next to no traditionally feminine qualities- Goldie is the closest, when she dresses up for special events or for schemes. Which I don’t mind, per se, I don’t have many traditionally feminine qualities either, but you’d think at least a few would. The original Gandra Dee, who I am glad they changed mind you, was very feminine; she wore her hair long, wore dresses, enjoyed makeup and manicures, etc. She was traditionally feminine, AND smart. (even if I never liked how they drew her face (the eyes and beak look weird imho, DT17 pulled it off better), and I felt like she left much to be desired *cough*…)

There is nothing wrong with having traditionally feminine characters. There is nothing wrong with having characters who enjoy dressing up, or putting on makeup, or shopping, etc. The problem with traditionally feminine characters comes in when it’s done for sex appeal, or you have a woman running from dinosaurs in 6 inch heels (yeah I’m calling that out) or there’s a feminine character there only to be dragged on by the others for their feminine characteristics.

Anyway, rant about that over. I still love what they did with Gandra, but I’m just noticing this trend where female characters aren’t being allowed to like traditionally feminine things. Yeah, there are absolutely a lot of girls who don’t, but there’s probably an equal amount who do! And there’s nothing wrong with showing a competent, traditionally feminine character. :/

Okay, Launchpad is a sweetheart and let’s be honest, we knew the moment we saw him that the other guy at the signing was Drake Mallard.

I love that they kept the “Darkwing Duck inspires Drake Mallard to become Darkwing Duck” aspect of DW’s origin story, while twisting it around so that time travel and paradoxes don’t occur. Also! We still get Jim Cummings as Negaduck, while also getting a new VA for Drake Mallard/Darkwing Duck- someone who does a pretty good job at sounding like them, too. So now Negaduck, who is no longer Darkwing/Drake Mallard from an alternate universe, has his own distinguishable voice!

… And I still think Negs is gonna have an unhealthy obsession with Launchpad, thanks to the “my fan” comment. I figure that’s how we’ll get Nega Launchpad, but who knows! There’s so many possibilities!

Allen Rambles About Three Houses

So last week I finished up my Black Eagles playthrough of Fire Emblem Three Houses. It was... okay. It wasn’t great. I had a few issues with the pacing how quick the plot move to the final battles and the lack of build-up for the big climaxes in the last few chapters, but I had a good time overall. Still, I was left unsatisfied. Between Fates, Echoes, and even Warriors, I think I enjoyed this game the most, but also had the most uncertainty with. 

Fates was a fun game with fun mechanics and fun customization options if you were willing to grind for it, but also had the worst stories and narratives. Echoes had the best story out of the three, but had some game mechanics I really wasn’t a fan of like dungeon stamina and enemy AI nonsense. And Warriors was just fun fanservice as a fan of Dynasty Warriors, but was overall boring and repetitive after completing the story mode. 

Three Houses honestly succeeds in every category so far. It has an engaging story, fun gameplay mechanics with a lot of customization options, and a lot of fun interactions and cute moments in it. But even so, I still can’t help but have issues with it. 

So... I want to talk about that for a bit. I want to cover what I like and what I dislike about this game so far. Just talk a little bit with the fanbase to see where my feelings and thoughts are compared to everyone else’s.

But first, as always, a synopsis for those unfamiliar with Three Housed. 

Fire Emblem Three Houses is a strategy game for the Nintendo Switch and the 16th game in the franchise. This game in particular focuses on three heirs to three different nations on the continent of Fodlan. The proud and commanding Edelgard of the Adrestian Empire who has great ambitions for her nation and its people despite how radical and blasphemous her manifesto seems. The kind well-mannered Dimitri of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus who’s smile and inviting nature hides a dark and maleficent past that still haunts and eats away at him to this day. And the easy-going and playful Claude of the Leicester Alliance who always seems to be planning something more sinister and malicious than his devil may care attitude shows. These 3 heirs all go to the same military academy at the Garreg Mach Monastery, both a religious and military center where the church resides. Together they enjoy school life, interact with students and classmates, compete in friendly competition, and learn the ways of war together. However, as political events, social changes, and possible wars erupting, the three friends are tested and eventually break part, now pointing their blades at each other for their own beliefs and goals. And as violence is all but certain as the years tick by, all the three can do is wait until they’re forced to kill each other for their beliefs, their goals, and their countries.

You play as none of these characters.

Instead, you play as Byleth, a new professor at the academy and former mercenary. You choose one of the Three Houses to teach and become wrapped up in their machinations as the plot thickens. How you train your students and ready them for the real world for the trials to come is all in your hands.

So... with that all said and the plot laid out, I think I should start with my issues first in the say way I did my quick thoughts. Just so I can at least end this on a good note after all my nitpicks and issues. 

With that said, I’m going to start small and first cover...

Things That Only Annoy Allen

So last time I tried to write this I had to make my first “small” grievance into it’s own part. I’ll try and keep this short since I really want to keep this to the actual small stuff:

I don’t like Byleth’s female design. I’ll go into detail later but for now just know the lacy stockings are distracting for the wrong reasons.

There’s no female brawling class and it bugs me greatly due to Petra’s and Ingrid’s high speed growths. They could be some extremely high DPS infantry in the right hands with those things, but there’s no really class to take advantage of that aside from maybe Swordmaster.

More for story reasons than anything, I wish there was an in-game limit to how many students you could have join your class. About 3 students per House if I had to put a number on it for reasons I’ll explain later. This isn’t an issue, but it’s something I’d like.

Magic only being accessible for certain classes bugs me. I understand the in-game reason for this as a physical unit that could use some emergency (if very weak) magic after losing weapons or fighting armored units would honestly break the game even further than it can be now, but still.

Something I might mention later, but after watching a Blue Lions playthrough by one of my favorite Let’s Players I feel that the game should had limited which House we could join first, as my Black Eagles playthrough would had been more fulfilling learning of some things I’ve learned in that Blue Lions run.

Class mastery should be tied to levels instead of as a separate experience bar. I understand why that’s done, mostly keep people from really min-maxing classes and abilities, but it’s still annoying in terms of optimization.

Edelgard, the only female lord, is the only bisexual lord. Now I’m not in the LGBTQA+ community, but as a gamer and self-proclaimed degenerate I know that denying the yaoi fangirls a male gay option for a main character is... suspicious, given the lovable bisexual rouge of Niles in Fates, and it clear that Claude could had easily been a bisexual option as well given his personality. Again, not in the LGBTQA+ community or trying to play the social justice card, but it is making me raise eyebrows toward the games marketing and aimed demographics.

Byleth in general just... bugs me as a character, but I’ll get to that later.

And now it’s later, so let’s get to talking about the main thing that bugs me with Three Houses, and that’s...

Byleth

I don’t like Byleth. I don’t like Byleth at all. I namely don’t like how they were executed, but the fact that we have another avatar character after how well Echoes worked as a story without a self-insert character, I’m just... baffled. I’ll try and break this down a little.

Byleth’s Design

I really don’t Byleth’s design, namely the female design. The male version looks fine, if a little too black for my tastes, but the female version is trying way too hard to look sexy. This only makes me mad because both Awakening and Fates had female avatars that didn’t look overly sexy or obviously pandering to the male gaze. They were just the female version of the male version’s outfit. Maybe there was some more boobs and hips because female, but it was mostly forgivable. 

And look, I’m not prude, far from it. Senran Kagura is one of my favorite video game series (cautiously hyped about Yumi being in Cross Tag BTW). Rumble Roses is a guilty pleasure I play every so often. One of my favorite anime is freaking Koihime, aka ‘Ikkitousen but better EVERYONE is a girl.’ I’m not saying you can’t have a sexy character or a bunch of sexy characters in a game or piece of media. However, that character should at least have a sexy personality to go with it. And with Byleth, who has the personality of cardboard has been with her mercenary father all her life fighting for her life, it doesn’t feel like she would actively be trying to look sexy since she doesn’t have the personality for it, or a personality at all. She looks less like a mercenary or teacher and more like Manuela forced her into some lacy stockings to make her branch out...

Huh, that would be a good paralogue/support conversation, but I’m not about to rewrite the game just for my satisfaction... yet.

 If you want my quick armchair redesign ideas in terms of design I’d just stick her in Male Byleth’s armor, maybe have a more pronounced/noticeable skirt instead of a long shirt, and dear God get rid of those lacy stockings. Byleth is suppose to be a mercenary that’s only known battle with her father, the Ashen Demon that rarely shows their emotions, not a sexy fashion model. The Enlightened One model is it’s own mess, but this section ate up enough of my time already so I’m moving on.

Byleth’s Personality

Again, Byleth having the personality of a damn rock really kills my attachment to the character. They don’t speak or emote beyond generic level up phrases and crit quotes. 

Which is a shame because Byleth has some really good crit quotes. 

However, from what Jeralt and other students say about Byleth I can gather that their someone that’s often quiet and standoffish. They don’t speak unless prompted to or needs to interject. They tend to observe more than act, even more so after they gain the ability to rewind time, but have a razor-sharp and deadly focus when in combat. And despite their distant nature, they do care about their students, friends, and family quite a lot, willing to break the emotionless Ashen Demon persona to crack a smile even now and then, even completely showing deadpan shock when something surprising or appalling is said, as rare as it happens. 

This is literally Yu Narukami’s personality in Persona 4 the Animation.

And that anime not only gave Yu Narukami more agency and personality than the self-insert the game made him out as, it also gave him a lot of a good back-and-forth with his friends and cast at large. 

Seriously, this could had been Byleth if they bothered to let them speak and actively interact more independently, and it would had been great.

But that aside, I’m moving on to something a little more important, which is...

Byleth’s Importance

[Spoilers for the Black Eagles Route Ahead] 

Again, I’ve only played the Black Eagle’s route, so maybe this changes in the other Houses, but Byleth seems way too important for his own good when we have 3 other “main” characters. He’s the crux of a lot of events and it doesn’t feel deserved or built up to well enough. In the Black Eagle’s path, you’re the one that convinces the class to work with Edelgard instead of Edelgard just explaining herself before the class of her goals. You’re the one leading the Black Eagle Strike Force instead of Edelgard or Hubert taking command and leading after years of not having the professor around and having to survive the war on their own. You’re the one that Rhea has a personal vengeance for instead of the woman that torn the church apart with both words of steel and blades of iron. And you just randomly find out that your the progenitor god from Edelgard and Hubert toward the very end. It feels really anti-climactic, but I also get the feeling that we were suppose to play Edelgard’s route last, something I’ll save for later. 

Among other things, I just feel that the focus on Byleth stagnants Edelgard’s character a lot. I want to see Edelgard struggle with the fact that her ideals, while noble in concept, are dragging the world in the flames of war and that she’s seen more as a tyrant than a savior, but instead we focus on Byleth’s mysterious birth and power after being gone for five years. This game, at least on the Black Eagle route, was so damn close to telling a really good war drama, but backpedals due to Byleth’s existence and perceived importance.

Sothis

[Spoilers for Mid-Game Ahead]

I wish she was more active in the story. Nothing too big, but if I had to deal with emotionless rock that is Byleth, I’d like to have seen Sothis sprinkling her commentary on everything they did. Just imagine Sothis sassing Byleth about how their always eat lunch with their students. Her commenting on the fish they catch. Her giving additional small hints about who owns certain lost items after failing so many times to give the right item to someone. Her sassing every student in their support with Byleth on C-rank. Her telling you to go to sleep when you run out of activity points. It’d add a lot to her character and it’d make the moment later in the game when you no longer have her voice around feel more impactful. Imagine catching a big fish after fusing with her and... hearing nothing about it how big a catch it was. Imagine trying to give Ingrid a lost sword for the fifth time, hoping to hear a hint from Sothis and... you hear nothing.

Again, just an armchair idea, but at least that way when Byleth is being a plank of wood we’ll have Sothis to add some literal flavor text to everything they do.

Ah, but that’s enough about Byleth, let’s move on to something a little more important. Like... 

The Gameplay

Thankfully, my issue with the gameplay are more nitpicks if anything, and I can actually have this in list form too.

As I mentioned in my quick thoughts, I feel like late-game/master classes are more of a pain to gain than most others. A lot of them need to have some heavy grinding in a stat you didn’t likely need to worry about before. Mortal Savant requires you to heavily grind either a physical class in magic or a magical class in swords, something that you likely didn’t do. Speaking of magic, it’s annoying that for all the customization in this game only certain classes can use magic. It makes raising a Mortal Savant or a more physical Holy/Dark Knight a nightmare. Again, I understand why this was done, but it’s annoying all the same.

Gender-restrictions, as I also said in my Quick Thoughts, are just dumb. Fates had removed this and it was great to have the freedom to give my male units the ability to become Falcon Knights, or my Female units to be... Okay, I only played Fates and Echoes, but the fact still remains that not being able to make a female Grappler/War Master or a male Falcon Knight really sucks and limits me quite a bit. Especially the inability to make Lysithea a Dark Mage. It’s practically wrong. 

A lot of these maps have the same issue that Echoes had. They’re big and have a lot of enemies, but not much creativity to them. Okay, they have some thought put into them, more than Echoes anyway, but a lot of them still just feel like big fields that need at least three flying units to be manageable. Again, I’ve only played the Black Eagle route so there might be some more interesting maps in the other routes, but from what I’ve played there was no real strategy to these maps outside of baiting enemies and maneuvering around traps. I think there were probably only two maps that weren’t giant mazes or an empty field with a lot of enemies in them.

To the point above, this made slow moving armored classes almost completely useless. What point is there in having a slow tank on maps that span to what feels like 60X60 tile maps? Plus the maze-like design? Yeah, I don’t know how these maps were meant to be interesting.

And that’s it for gameplay issues. Moving on to...

The Story

Again, something that can be put into list form due to the story having more nitpicks than actual issues:

The split decision to join Edelgard or not is dumb, as is the requirement to have the option available. I think it’s foolish to think we wouldn’t agree with her after listening to her manifesto for so long, especially if you played a Blue Lions route and seeing how Sylvain and Ingrid were screwed over due to their Crests, or just... Lysithea’s  background in general. I can’t argue with her beliefs, only her execution.

The Flame Emperor reveal was... really anti-climatic. As if, again, they assumed we’d do Black Eagles last. Playing this route first just leads to a lot of anti-climatic reveals, especially on Edelgard’s route.

I just really wish Edelgard came clean with her classmates and commanders at some point in the story, to just tell them all that she was experimented on as a child and had two Crests as a result. That she wants to eliminate the nobility and Crests as a symbol of statu because of the harm it does to people both on top and on the bottom of the social food chain. It’d give a lot more weight to her cause.

Again, most of my issues with the story come from Byleth having too much screen time and importance compared to Edelgard as a whole. Especially when I did the route where I chose to go with her.

Alright, I think that’s it for all of my nitpicks, all the major ones anyway. I think I finally move to...

The Good Things

Again, this will be in list form since a lot of the nicer parts about this game don’t need as much breakdown as the bad parts.

But anyway...

As much as I don’t find the late game reward in terms of class advancement, the mid and early game are great for experimentation. I've had a bunch of fun on my second playthrough with some creative builds. I might suffer a little in the late game due to not optimizing everything, but that’s managable.

As I also stated in my quick thoughts, dismounting is hilariously broken. The amazing amount of utility you get from being about to dismount once you reach a destination and then mount at the start of the new turn for free while also being safe from arrows and horse-effective weapons is hysterical. I honestly think this was a bug that just didn’t patch and that dismounting meant you were stuck with the lower movement for the rest of the turn, but God am I going to use it until they eventually patch it out.

I’ve got... issues with the Black Eagle route, at least the route I went through, but I’ve been watching a playthrough of the Blue Lions route and it’s everything I could have wanted in a Fire Emblem game and more. If you want to play a good story I recommend the Blue Lions as your first route.

But to cut the Black Eagles route some credit, a lot of Edelgard and Hubert’s A-Supports were probably some of the best I’ve seen in the series... though I’ve only played Fates and Echoes, so...

Speaking of supports all of them were done very well. Like I said, Edelgard and Hubert had great supports, but Lysithea, Petra, Caspar, and Dorothea had great supports as well.

A lot of the supports and voice acting are great. It’s a key reason as to why I like the supports so much. The Lords are especially great to hear and were directed well.

And... yeah, that’s all the good things. Don’t let the short length fool you, folks. Like I said before, my issues are more nitpicks. The game as a whole is just fine.

That said...

In the Future

As much as I want to, even as a fun little project, I think it’s a little arrogant of me to be making any rewrites or “improvement” to the current story of Three Houses. I have various reasons for this that I might go into depth to in a later Rambling, but the short version is as someone that’s struggle to write their own story I feel like a hypocrite for trying to “correct” another’s. However, I think it’s far game to make requests and bring forth ideas for a future title, especially since this one is selling so well. And so, before concluding I’d like to present a few things I hope to be in the next Fire Emblem game:

No Avatar Character

Like I said, I feel Byleth’s entire presence can ruin scenes due to his lack of personality and engagement. And as easy as it would be to give him one that would also mean the play losing their use self-insert character. To this I say it’s probably best to just not have an avatar/self-insert character to begin with. You can easily make a character that has the stats of an above-average all-rounder as your main character/lord while still having a personality. I think Echoes did this well enough with Alm and Celica, especially Celica if we’re talking stats and utility as a healer/magic/swordsman hybrid.

No Gender-Locked Classes

This is more of a personal desire than something that needs to happen, but if the next Fire Emblem game is going to give us this much customization then I’d really like to have complete control and not be restricted by gender, especially when we’re talking stats. A War Master Hilda would be wild. As would a Hero Petra, a Gremory Linhardt, a Dark Mage Lythesia, and so on. To restrict us is not only screwing people who want to make quirky builds, but also those that want to make optimal builds. Either remove the gender lock, or have these characters with more straight-forward classes like in Fates.

One/Limited Routes

Again, I haven’t played Blue Lions or Golden Deer yet, but the Black Eagles route had a branching path that I honestly think shouldn’t have existed. Maybe this was for reasons I can only guess at, but the story of the Black Eagles Route I was on felt very rushed, or at least it assumed I had played either the other Houses or the “canon” Black Eagles route first. That left the actual story, while I personally found engaging, very rushed and underwhelming at the end. In the future I’m hoping for either one path, or for alternate paths to be locked until you complete the other “main” ones that give a fuller story, because a lot of what I’m seeing in the Blue Lions playthrough I’m watching would had been nice to learn in the Black Eagles route to see Edelgards view of things.

Smaller Maps

Like I said, the maps in Three Houses are a little too large, especially with slower armored/magic units in the early game with only 4 movement. In the next game I’m hoping for either smaller maps or at least maps that accommodate for that slow movement of early game and saving the bigger maps for when you’d naturally have some cavalry and infantry units with 5 movement. I think Fates’ Conquest and Revelations maps did this perfectly.

Brawling Weapons

No real critique here. I just really like the gauntlets and I hope they come back in the next game.

Conclusion

Overall, I think Three Houses is a good game, despite all my nitpicks. I hope the next game will be even better and hopefully have some of the things I want to see. I recommend this for anyone with a Switch wanting to play a decent strategy game.

Top 5 Tony Stark moments!!!!!! (This is mean i know, but your thoughts are always super good 🙌)

i’m already agonizing over top five tony stark quotes this is so mean how could you do this to me. (and thanks!)

I’m going to choose one moment per movie because otherwise this would end up being my top five favorite scenes from Iron Man 1.

1. Iron Man 1 

The scene where he asks Pepper to help him break into Obie’s computer to get information on where he’s been selling weapons, and Pepper says she won’t help him and he goes: “You stood by my side all these years while I reaped the benefits of destruction, and now that I’m trying to protect the people I put in harm’s way, you’re going to walk out on me?” and then also: “I shouldn’t be alive unless it was for a reason. I’m not crazy, Pepper. I just finally know what I have to do. And I know in my heart that it’s right.”

I have that speech memorized. It’s such a perfect encapsulation of Tony’s entire arc, but I also love how serious and vulnerable Tony is in that scene - he’s even angry that Pepper can’t understand the importance of what he’s doing. He’s so desperate to make amends for what he’s done.

(Also I’m kind of cheating, but the moment where Tony is watching the news report about Gullmera and then shoots his reflection in the glass?? Also incredible. It just shows how much anger and hatred Tony feels towards himself for being complicit in a system that endangered people.)

2. Spider-Man: Homecoming

THE ROOFTOP SCENE OKAY. I already mentioned how I love it from Peter’s perspective, but there’s so much to love about it in terms of Tony. First, the fact that he’s actually there. I think he had been trying to distance himself from Peter at first because a) still probably dealing with some self healing post-Civil War and b) I’m not really sure he trusts himself to know what to do with Peter considering his own father wasn’t a great role model. I think Tony goes on an unseen arc in that movie of staying distant from Peter to finally stepping up and being a mentor, and the pivotal moment of that is him actually being there physically in that moment.

His entire speech to Peter is just so good. Tony’s WHOLE THING is about taking responsibility and he’s teaching that to Peter. He’s mad and upset because Peter tried to do the right thing but put people in danger and that’s something that Tony has lived. He doesn’t want Peter to follow in his footsteps and end up having to deal with the guilt of accidentally hurting people.

Also!! “If you’re nothing without this suit, you shouldn’t have it” is so damn good!! I could rant for ages about how much Tony himself puts Iron Man on a pedestal above himself. He might say that he and the suit are one (and he’s not wrong), but he really doesn’t like himself without Iron Man. Iron Man represents the best of him AND post-New York he becomes unhealthy dependent on Iron Man because of his anxiety. So him finally reaching a point where he knows that the suit does not make the hero is such a sign of Tony growing over the course of the series. That line is the answer to Iron Man 3, where he panicked at the idea of not having the suit. 

3. Age of Ultron

As much as I despise AoU, I love the vision that Wanda shows him. It really shows just how much the Avengers DO matter to him and how much he wants to protect them. I also love the follow-up scene in the barn with Fury when he talks about the dream - specifically the line “I wasn’t ready. I didn’t do enough.” Because Tony is SO SCARED of losing the people he cares about and constantly puts the weight of the world on his shoulders. (Also, I love the Fury/Tony relationship so Fury listening to Tony be vulnerable and scared and reassure him KILL S ME.)

My only beef with it is that Rhodey and Pepper and Happy 100% should have been in that vision. (Actually, the fact that Rhodey is in the movie and NOT in that vision is just, insulting, and such an obvious sign that Whedon really doesn’t care about staying true to other movies in the MCU.)

4. Avengers

When Tony doesn’t think twice about flying the missile into space and sacrificing himself. I’ve talked before about how true the “I think I’d just cut the wire” line is, because Tony has a habit of finding a third option when the two options presented to him suck, but at the same time, if the only option he has left is to sacrifice himself to save others, he WILL without hesitation. I also really love that that “Stark, you know that’s a one-way trip” moment gets paralleled so strongly in Infinity War, when he goes up into the ship and into space to help save Earth again. He even tells Peter “This is a one trip.”

TWICE Tony has willingly flung himself into space to save the people of Earth and sacrificed himself in the process - and the second time, he had the added bonus of buckets of space-related PTSD and trauma from the FIRST time.

I also really love that this moment sets up so much of the later series, especially for Tony. This really is the turning point - not joining the Avengers, but flinging himself into space and realizing just how small and weak Earth is. When Steve said it was a one way trip, he wasn’t really wrong. Tony might have come back (ALSO!! ALSO!! THERE’S A LOT OF ICARUS SYMBOLISM WITH TONY RIGHT?? HOW ABOUT LITERALLY FLYING SO HIGH HIS SUIT MALFUNCTIONS AND PLUMMETING TO EARTH?) but, in his own words, nothing has been the same since.

Which is why he needs a happy ending after Thanos - the very thing he’s unknowingly been fearing all these years - is defeated!!!

5. Iron Man (Again. Because I lied and couldn’t resist.)

The moment when Yinsen sacrifices his life for Tony. I truly don’t think he’s ever fully gotten over that moment - the first person he couldn’t save as Iron Man, but also the hero who led by example and showed him just how to be a hero.

He heard Yinsen say “don’t waste your life” and he has never forgotten it. He has placed the weight of the world on his shoulders and has continuously sacrificed his own happiness to keep being Iron Man and save others. 

(Side note: I really wish The Avengers had gone there, but they were juggling a lot of characters and Whedon doesn’t really like referencing other movies outside of what he’s done apparently, but I feel like losing Coulson felt so much like losing Yinsen to Tony.)

OKAY THAT WAS REALLY HARD and I wrote like a novel in response because it’s TONY and I couldn’t help myself.

The Last Jedi Thoughts (Spoilers)

Alright so I just got out of the Last Jedi and I have to say I’m feeling kind of conflicted. On one hand this movie has a lot of things I wanted (Force bond, Reylo, shirtless Kylo~), things I’m very delighted by, but at the same time I don’t think it was better than or equal to the Force Awakens. I think a lot of it comes from the shift in directors, because there is clearly some differences in direction that are at play here. Where JJ tried to move back towards a more subtle version of the force, Rian choose to overdo it complete with Superwoman Leia,  Hologram Luke, Jolly God Snoke, and Earthbender Rey. Seriously the force abilities here went further than the damn prequels (don’t hate them but yeah...) It was just too much. When Luke did his bit at the end all I could think was “And you guys called Rey a Mary Sue...” I also was kind of bummed by Superwoman Leia, I thought they were doing a beautiful tribute to her infamous drowned in moonlight quote only for her to zip across the screen like that.

On top of that Rian tried too hard at being subtle to the point that I’m afraid it’s muddled the message a bit. While I came out of it feeling that Reylo and Ben redemption is still very much the end goal there was a lot of weird lines towards the end. We have Rose with her whole “We will win by saving what we love, not killing what we hate.” followed immediately by Leia giving up on any good in her son which is in turn followed by Luke, who was previously all “Ben is pure evil!” going “Nah that person(her son) will always be there.” It feels like too much back and forth in too short an amount of time. 

Along with this there is another problem of a distracting side plot, but this one is drawn out much longer than the previous one. Where Force Awakens had a short romp with a tentacle monster, Last Jedi offers up a casino/prison break that takes up half the film and ultimately serves no purpose. I feel like a lot of the time spent there would have been put to better use fleshing out some of Luke and Ben’s backstory. What was the evil Luke was seeing? Did Leia know he pulled his saber on her sleeping son? How was Snoke manipulating Ben? Why did he kill the other students? Why did the handful of students go with him? How in the hell did they get off the planet?! etc.

I’m also not a huge fan of how they handled Finn this episode. I’ve been a huge Boyega fan since Attack the Block and he was the main reason I saw The Force Awakens. This film didn’t mistreat him per say, but it definitely retread all him character moments from the first film. Stumbling around a new area confused? Check. Urging Rebels to do something crazy? Check. Trying to run away from a fight? Check. Adorably/humorously investigating things? Check. Going on a infiltration mission? Check. Whooping at air support? Check. Trying and failing to be a hero (not that he isn’t, but you get what I mean)? Check. It was just the same things from the first one in a new setting.

Now don’t misinterpret this as me saying that it’s a bad film, it’s not. It’s still an interesting Star Wars film that should be seen, but it wouldn’t be right for me to sing it praises and act like it is flawless just for the Reylo scraps that I was given. With that out of the way, let me gush about the stuff I liked. 

Leia teaching Poe’s stubborn ass a hard learned lesson that being the hero doesn’t always mean blowing shit up or making kick ass plans. Sometimes it’s just about living another day with the people you care about and [insert Rose’s last line here]. This is a lesson that the fandom needed to hear, because in the end it’s not about grinding the other side into the dust, it’s about living and how those lives are lived. 

Luke, although I wasn’t a fan of the force overkill, I did love Luke. He was every bit the character he was from the original trilogy. I was worried that they would try to hard to make him a curmudgeonly old man and sacrifice his character, but he was still him. His quips, his moments of joy, his love for his friends and family, all of it was just perfectly him. 

Reylo. I didn’t expect them to go full on hand holding, shirtless beefcake Ben, fighting back to back badassery, but holy crap they went there. I especially like how eager Kylo was to talk to her and his genuine curiosity. Again I felt like more time could have been spent on establishing the background with Luke that led Rey to trust Kylo, but I don’t question that such a betrayal would be enough to give her hope in him. They are equally matched, invested in each other, and amazing. I’m honestly not sure what I think of that final force bond moment, but it left me contemplating a lot as I left the theater. 

As the credits rolled I wasn’t excited or disappointed, just really calm and thinking about everything that went down.
