Forbidden Desire (Part Seven)

Pairing: Thomas Shelby x Reader (Female/Incestuous)

The following day, after you arrived back home late and slept on your sofa, your mother decided to take matters into her own hands. Clearly, you were not going to listen to her and resign from your position at Shelby Company Limited. It was something you had already told her several times that night and she realised again that you were just as stubborn as your father who, unbeknownst to you, was very much alive and familiar to you.

Thus, while you went to work at the gambling den that day, your mother sought out a person who was familiar to her and this person was no other than Polly Grey.

Polly Grey looked after your mother when she was a young teenage girl and ended up in trouble with the authorities for stealing.

Just like the Shelbys back then, your mother was a thief and got involved in minor criminal activities. She got arrested twice and it was Arthur Shelby who threated a police officer on her behalf when he tried to assault her.

Arthur saved her that day and this was how it had all started.

“I am here to see Misses Polly Grey” your mother informed Polly’s secretary when she arrived at her office in Birmingham which was located in a much nicer part of town than the gambling den you were working in.

“Do you have an appointment?” the secretary asked but your mother shook her head. Of course she did not have an appointment. In fact, she had not seen Polly since before you were born.

“No, I do not but if you give her my name, I am sure that she will see me” your mother told her and this was exactly what she did. The secretary informed Polly of your mother’s name and, unsurprisingly, Polly called her into her offices right away. She even cancelled one of her other meetings for her, simply to be accommodating for old times’ sake. Polly, of course, was intrigued about what your mother had to say and, yet, nothing would have prepared her for that…that shock…an utter surprise!

“I did not expect to see you ever again in this part of the world. You left so suddenly and without a trace” Polly said and your mother was surprised by how well and elegant she looked. She was wealthy and displayed class and maturity, unlike twenty-five years ago when she produced liquor out of her bathroom to make a few quid.

“And I never expected to be back, but here I am, trying to save my daughter from the bad influence of your family” your mother said without any reluctance whatsoever, causing Polly to raise her eyebrows.

“Your daughter is Y/N. I have met her at the gambling den and Thomas, in particular, seems to have taken an interest in her” Polly said almost jokingly before, without asking, pouring your mother a glass of whiskey.

“An interest in her? How?” your mother asked before taking the glass from Polly’s well-manicured hands.

“In the way Thomas takes an interest in anybody. Only he knows. It could be a professional interest or it could be much more than that. I don’t really know. He seems to keep those things from me these days” Polly explained while gesturing for your mother to sit down which, of course, she did in order to be polite.

“He can’t take an interest in her” your mother said nonetheless which, again, caused Polly to chuckle.

“He can’t?” Polly laughed while pouring herself a drink as well. “You would know Thomas well enough to also know that he has no limitations, right? If he likes your daughter then there is nothing I can do about it” Polly then joked before explaining to your mother that the word “can’t” is not part of Tommy’s vocabulary,

“Polly, I am begging you to be reasonable here. I do not want my daughter to be part of this family nor do I want her to be involved with Thomas Shelby in any way whatsoever” your mother said with a less demanding but more desperate tone in her voice.

“She isn’t part of the family. She just part of the business. Despite, she is new and Tommy will get over her within no time, trust me. It is just the way he is these days. I would not think too much of it if I was you” Polly said bluntly.

“Thomas must end her employment and never see her again. I am demanding it! Please! For old times’ sake” your mother said in a begging kind of manner.

“Like I said, Thomas has taken an interest in her for now, so I doubt that he would be amicable to letting her go” polly repeated herself, not knowing why your mother was making such a big deal out of all this. You were grown woman and should be able to decide for yourself as to who you are getting yourself involved with.

“She is not a woman for Thomas Shelby to toy with. There will be consequences if he does” your mother then went on to say, trying to reason with Polly without giving too much away. Although she soon realised that her efforts were futile.

“Being?” Pully asked, intrigued. “Are you going to shoot him?” she then joked and, of course, your mother shook her head.

“No, but Arthur might” she then blurted out, causing Polly to laugh.

“Arthur?” she asked. “And why would he do that?” she wondered.

“Because Y/N is his daughter. Isn’t that obvious to you?” your mother responded almost hysterically, causing Polly’s chin to drop. She knew that there was something about you which intrigued her and made her feel as though she knew you somehow or from somewhere, but she could never really figure out why she had this somewhat strange feeling about you. Now, it all made sense to her and she was shocked.

“I never told anyone until now because I am ashamed of ever having been involved with this family. I was young and naïve when I fell in love with Arthur and I certainly do not want my daughter to become a part of any criminal activities. I am begging you Polly, from mother to mother, get her out of this company” your mother then went on to say before Polly could even digest the news.

“That explains everything. Y/N is a Shelby woman” Polly said. She was stunned and got up from where she was sitting in order to walk around, thinking about what to do next.

“No. She will never be a Shelby woman” your mother blurted out, invading Polly’s thoughts about how to approach these news with both Arthur and Tommy.

“Unfortunatly that is not up to you to decide. It is Y/N’s decision alone. If she wants to be a part of this family, then by all means, she can…” Polly argued while still thinking about it some more. “Of course, Tommy will keep her out of the sport if she is a Shelby and, of course, she will be under the protection of the Peaky Blinders so, really, there is nothing for you to worry about, is there?” Polly then went on to say while grabbing her coat and telling your mother that she had more urgent business to attend to.

She had to find Arthur and she most certainly had to find Tommy before he was to do something stupid.

At the same time…

Just as your mother went to see Polly at her offices at around ten o’clock, you went into work at the gambling den and were greeted by Linda who appeared to be upset by something Lizzie had done.

According to her, it was Lizzie who took the missing money from safe simply to play tricks on you and even Linda herself was outraged by this.

“I can’t believe it. This is so dishonest of her” she said and it took you a while to comprehend what she was saying.

“So, Lizzie took the money and wanted me to take the fall for it? Is that it?” you asked, causing Linda to nod.

“Yes. She thinks that you are seeing Tommy which, I know, is quite outrageous” Linda laughed. “I know you like him, this much is obvious to me, but as if he would be interested in sleeping with someone like you. It’s absurd and I told Lizzie so many times that she had nothing to worry about…” she went on to say, causing you to fume with anger.

“Right. Listen Linda, I am not feeling well today so I will be taking the day off” you said calmly, supressing the anger you felt towards her.

“You will what now?” Linda asked. She was surprised by your audacity to leave her with all the work that had to be done and snapped. “You can’t just leave. I am on my own here” she spat.

“Watch me. I can. I will see you tomorrow” you said as you waived her goodbye whereas, the truth was, that you did not feel unwell at all.

You felt anger towards her, yes, but, after comment, you also suddenly felt an urgent need to continue where you had left off last night when you visited Tommy.

For some reason, Linda’s comment triggered something inside of you and you felt as though you needed to prove something to yourself and this exactly why, for the next two hours, you spent all of your money to buy yourself something nice before, finally, returning to Arrow House to claim what you ought was yours.

AND LEO AND CALYPSO OMFG that is a toxic relationship. The age gap. The way calypso treats Leo. The fact Leo SHOULD NOT be with someone like this man hasn't dealt with his attachment and Abandonment issues like st all?!

The literal only black character in the pjo books being beckendorf.. then he dies. Then the Korean/Asian (I'm not sure sorry) character dies, Ethan. You got any ships that'd have people side eying you?

Uuuuuuh out of any fandom ever? Short answer: yes.

Long answer: it's a little complicated what I would define as a ship for me bc when it comes to ships I actively ship and actually think should kith I have incredibly few. But when it comes to ships where someone else will be like "these two are cute together" and I'll go "yeah I see it" and maybe rt/rb a post about them it's like...almost any ship. Y'all have watched me write hcs for almost every mix and match combination of almost every character in Survive even though I have like,,,two ships from that game. And also what some people consider side eye worthy is different from what I do.

Like,,,for example, I know I've said it before, but I don't think human x digimon ships are inherently weird. I think it varies on a partner-to-partner basis. I've seen a lot of people in gg fandom ship Ruli and Angoramon or Kiyo and Jellymon and...yeah I think that's fine. But no one ships Hiro and Gammamon because that would be weird. And I don't think I really have to explain what the difference there is. But I know for some people it's just a hard no across the board lmao.

Probably the only ship I actively ship rn that people think is weird is, for reasons I will never understand, ThomAya. For those of you not in Genshin fandom they're just a classic cute longtime best friends to lovers ship that some people unironically think is incest because Ayaka told one person one time that Thoma is kind of like a second brother to her. These same people will turn around and ship him with her actual brother tho which...what? Like if you actually think they're related or whatever how would that not, in your eyes, also make him related to her brother I DON'T UNDERSTAND YOU PEOPLE. I digress.

OH OH OH NOT TO KEEP GENSHINNING BUT FUN FACT I totally got canceled on twitter for shipping kaether back when it was implied but not explicitly confirmed yet that Aether's an adult so the "Traveler is literally minor-coded" crowd came for my ass. I tragically got blocked by one of my only mutuals who liked Digimon back then over that shit lakfdjak. Like sorry for assuming a character who had "seen the birth and death of stars" but is kinda short was at least 18. I was right though.

I know a lot of my KH ships are side eye worthy because they'll be between characters who have literally never met (i.e. most mix and match combos of the characters who are Nobodies of or replicas of or the embodiment of darkness extracted from the other major characters). Some of them are between characters who, despite literally having entire arcs dedicated to establishing that they are NOT the same person, people will still point at and call self-cest. (i.e. shipping Roxas with Sora or Xion). So again I genuinely don't think they're weird, but I know other people do.

I've seen people say it's weird to ship Pao-Lin and Lara in Tiger & Bunny because of their "age difference." They are 16 and 14. Sue me.

Here's a special segment for things I shipped in middle and high school that no one thought was weird back then but would DEFINITELY get a side eye in 2024.

I was a sebaciel shippper when I was like,,,12. Would I still ship it today? Probably no. But hey it was 2013 and I'm pretty sure the show WANTED you to ship them.

Almost any hetalia ship. I am not even joking, almost every character in that entire show was related somehow or another. It was like 2015. I was not immune to smashing pretty characters together and shouting "now kiss." I also was not doing deep dives into whether or not the immortal personifications of countries were technically related or had age gaps, I'm sorry.

Totally shipped Yoichi and Gekkouin from OnS. I mean my main ship was kimiyoi but multishippping is real. To be honest it was just a classic case of being a teenager and shipping the character I related to with the character I thought was hot. It was not any deeper than that.

TLDR: if any of y'all do now or ever have shipped anything weird, I'm not gonna judge you for it. I literally do not have the right to.

I forgot about this ask I answered 4 years ago, I kinda wanna update my graces answers even if that's a tumblr faux pas 😅 Long weird ramble below the cut:

First of all I'm a lot more into shipping than I used to be, mainly bc I realized "shipping" just meant "an interesting relationship" and not always "wholesome and perfect ideal relationship" or required to focus on the "mwah mwah hanky panky" 😅 So yeah I'm a diehard Richass shipper, I still like Cheribel it managed to grow on me in the most recent playthrough though I'd still say it's far from my favorite ship, and I think Huscal is plenty cute though I feel it may be one-sided 😅 And while I don't actively ship it myself there's some fun Cheriscal stuff out there, good to get more wlw!

I've actually recently started shipping Cheribert even though there's nothing for it and in canon they're pretty platonic 😅 I have a whole document of random thoughts about it though and the start of a fic so I ended up taking it more seriously than I anticipated 😅 It mostly boils down to them both being the more practical, grounded members of the group who are both hopelessly pining after someone who just can't seem to notice them. So they meet up frequently over tea to bitch about their heartaches, and end up in a fake-dating instill-jealousy scheme (thanks to Richard and Malik's meddling) that backfires when they start finding each other's company preferable to chasing the unattainable. Strangely it actually IS cute and wholesome 😁

...Unlike the Asbel-Richard-Lambda love triangle thing i still find highly entertaining 😅 No official fics about it so far but plenty of WIPs, AUs, and daydreams with that general vibe, ranging from comedic drama to actually geniunely fucked up. I cannot be trusted with these 3, I enjoy their suffering too much 😂

Also this is practically a crackfic but I kinda like shipping both Asbel and Cheria with the Little Queen 😂 Asbel out of an exaggeration of his masochistic tendencies into heightened bisexual attraction to people who have actively threatened his life before (though I believe he would not even be aware of his own tastes 😅), and Cheria as part of a specific AU in which the LQ is the one to heal her chronic illness, and they both bond over their profound loneliness. Again, weirdly wholesome 😅

All in all I'm pro-ship so I'm down with most things, I swerve the things I don't like personally (age gaps like Sophie or Malik/party members, incest like Asbel/Hubert) but I'm fine with their existence, I might even read them someday anyway just cause I've found it's geniunely enlightening to read about things outside your comfort zone. It's not like the things *I* like are normal either 😅

Moving on from weird shippy stuff! I still know I suck at Graces combat but I have definitely improved. I can now firmly say that my A Team is Asbel, Sophie, Cheria, and Pascal. Asbel and Sophie are great physical fighter aggro tanks who combo like motherfuckers, and Sophie can even heal well which makes her very flexible! Cheria has slow but very powerful spells and heals, and while she's physically frail her evasion is quite good so she can cancel a spell and run and hide behind the tanks 😂 Pascal tends to be literally hit or miss with her low accuracy but she does do massive damage when she hits, and she can also take some hits compared to the remaining 3 party member options.

Malik is just Pascal but worse since he tends to be a bit vulnerable while casting/throwing his bladerang, Richard requires twice as much effort to do the kinds of things others pull off easily (you have to combo perfectly in order to shorten his egregiously long cast times, or risk being hit and stunned and OHKOd), and Hubert faints like a Victorian lady if you so much as breathe on him. I can't have a party of weaklings when Hard mode bosses already hit like a truck 😅

They're all very fun in their own ways though 😁 And like I said, I'm still kinda bad at the game. I'm sure more talented players can make each of them viable (like if I could use Iron Stance more reliably that'd help the casters so much 😩).

As for the rest of the Tales series, I obviously took a bit of a break from it this year though I still love it loads 💜💜💜 I'm happy to keep this Graces fixation going into next year, but I think when it finally dies down a bit I might replay Zesty--- it's the only other title who could possibly dethrone my Graces obsession, so I've been deliberately avoiding it 😅

Graces 3. Any ships?:

I'm not huge on shipping in general but most of the popular ships are fine with me, mainly Asbel/Richard, Asbel/Cheria, and Hubert/Pascal. (Spoilers ahead:) I always find it kind of funny that Asbel merges with Lambda after him and Richard fall apart, it feels like he's dating Richard's abusive ex and making it work better 😂 maybe I'll write a fic someday with that premise, who knows...

7. Main team of 4/mainly play as:

Going back to Graces and figuring out all the other characters is on my to-do list, I mained Asbel mostly, though I did try out Richard, Sophie, and Hubert a little. I tend to rotate that party pretty often but I always had Asbel and Sophie, would probably put in Hubert and Cheria as my other 2 or Richard if he's available.

Zestiria 1. Best girl:

Lailah!! I loved Lailah much more than I thought I would, having a group mom to make puns and snacks really makes the party dynamic charming. She has her own burdens based on her perceived former failings with Michael but she is still trying again to bring about a legacy of good people and that is so inspiring. What a great mentor figure.

10. Favorite music track:

Oh that's so hard, Zesty has so many amazing tracks! I think Zaveid's Theme, the Fire Trial and the Water Trial are all tied as some of my favorite songs of all time, but Sorey's theme and the song that plays when Rose joins are also both great. They really knocked it out of the park with these songs, I tell ya

Vesperia 2. Best boy:

Another hard one, they're all so good, but I am always so proud of Karol. He's really trying his best alongside a party of mainly adults and teenagers and he absolutely pulls his weight, he just needed to hear them validate him. He's resourceful and a hard worker and I feel like he's gonna surpass Raven and Yuri someday, maybe even Flynn, and I know they'd all be super proud of him.

(I answered 8 in a previous ask, but my favorite town is Dahngrest for its atmosphere.)

Do you support anti-harassment and pro-shipping?

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: This is an issue I’ve been monitoring and grappling with for a long time, and I feel like while my core philosophy has been the same for a while now, the nuances I’ve held shift every so often. I don’t identify as an anti. I just don’t. I think shipping things - be it incest, adult/minor, or one of the many flavors of abusive - is an ENTIRELY separate issue from wanting to do that IRL. I think sometimes people just want to write taboo topics for various reasons. Because the topics themselves are taboo and that’s interesting, because they offer methods of coping, even because some people are kinda into projecting upon the person on the losing end of the power dynamic and being dominated and kicked around, since that’s not something you should really chase in real life (unless it’s during a roleplay with a network of safewords).

There are many ships I think are gross, but I don’t want people to stop shipping them because I don’t like them. I don’t like ships that involve anyone under 13 with anyone over 18. I don’t like ships that involve anyone under 18 with anyone over 30. (Aging up is a whole different matter; if you write the younger character older and legitimately have them behave the way you think they would as an adult, it’s all good.) I REALLY don’t like ships where a character is either confirmed homosexual or only shown onscreen to be attracted to the same gender in a big-deal reveal sort of way (if the character has crushes on many genders or the creator uses Word of God to say they’re bi/pan, it’s fine) and the ship involves putting them with someone of the opposite gender (shipping them with enbies is fine). And no, I don’t think it’s a double standard that I sometimes like to do same-sex ships for characters who are coded very very straight. But this is all to do with my tastes and beliefs, not with what I think the rest of you all should do. If you like something that falls in my personal no-no category, then go ahead and do it. I’ll decide how much I want to interact with you, and that says more about our potential chemistry as a unit than it does about you as a person. And if you have boundaries yourself - if age-gap ships skeeve you out - then that doesn’t make you a bad person or even an anti! Just block as needed, talk to friends if you feel betrayed by them, and recognize what it is you don’t like and that you don’t have to like it.

Selfshipping? Do what you want. Again, I might personally have reservations about shipping with somebody too young (I actually perceived my own main f/o as in his twenties when I first watched his source, then saw Word of God say he was NINETEEN actually, even though that invalidates many many jokes about how he’s bad at adulting, so I just said “fuck it” and he’s at least 24 to me because that makes more sense and is more of my comfort zone). But what I like shouldn’t dictate what YOU do. I might give you a little side-eye if you’re shipping with somebody young, but I don’t know your reasons for doing so and I don’t have the right to judge. I might distance myself from certain situations if I’m feeling skeeved out. Or I might not feel skeeved out depending on how it’s handled. I also again would raise a brow if you’re selfshipping with an opposite-gender gay character, but same principle: you have your reasons, you shouldn’t stop because some rando (me) has an issue with your ship, and if I have a problem with how you handle it, I’ll just peace out on my end and not make a deal out of it.

A lot of this comes from the fact that I have mega OCD and I already try to moralize everything I do and hyper-analyze my choices to make sure I am being a Good Person. If I try to follow the “rules” to make my ships palatable to everyone, then I start worrying that any deviation makes me unforgivable. The vast majority of ships in my deck are squeaky-clean and have no problems, but sometimes I’ll get, like...Ventus/Papyrus, where Ven is 15, and Papyrus is in age limbo but I always thought he was at least 18, and then I don’t want to spiral into a moral crisis because I really think it would be cute to put the anime boy with the skeleton and I think they’re both asexual anyway. Or when I aged up Zevon from Descendants in order to make him make more sense as Yzma’s son, and then I had to give him a ship with an adult and I found one I really like (Kamdor from Power Rangers). And this is not even scratching the very complex issue of “The writers of this piece of fiction were ACTUALLY horny for incest and I can see the subtext for it and now I gotta figure out what to do with this mess because I like the series and I do want the characters to have partners who will treat them right.”

That said...up until recently, I looked up to the more extreme proship community, even so far as to kinda be more of an “anti-anti.” But as time went on, that...didn’t seem to fit. I’ve unfollowed a few of those blogs now because first of all, proshipping as a “political party” seems to come with some things I don’t believe in, such as forming a parasocial relationship with AO3 or saying that freedom of fans to ship what they want means the creators of mainstream media should be allowed to portray whatever they want and that being “critical of media you consume” is an automatic dogwhistle for bullies. More importantly: I have at least one friend who I know leans more anti, and I value her a lot and I think it’s valid for her to have her boundaries. After a while, the things that anti-antis did to protect themselves from bullying started to feel a little bit like bullying right back. I can’t really call myself a traditional proshipper anymore, even though I’m definitely not an anti. But I don’t want to be an “anti-anti” either. Because actually, I USED to be an anti on a different social media platform long before Tumblr, and though I can’t tell you exactly why I was that way, I can understand what it’s like to feel that strongly about things that gross you out and want to get them out of your face. I don’t want to say I’m against a whole bunch of people who are probably as varied in intensity as proshippers are.

At the end of the day, what I want is for us all to CHILL OUT. Can we please, PLEASE just focus on having fun in whatever way that comes - problematic ships or no - so long as people IRL aren’t getting hurt? Can we respect that there are probably a LOT of people with OCD on social media who spiral easily if shamed too much (which is probably how the anti movement rose in the first place - I’m sure my anti phase was fueled by my secular scrupulosity)? Can we not assume that people who ship weird age gaps are Actual Pedophiles, which is an entirely separate issue? (Listen...I grew up in the Age of AkuRoku. I hated AkuRoku. But if all the AkuRoku shippers turned out to be pedos, well, the news sure didn’t cover it. I’m saying the majority of them didn’t. And it’s been a decade.) Can we not spread the fear of being cancelled or that having a certain fictional preference will ruin a budding friendship? Can we communicate with one another in private if a friend says or does something that makes you uncomfortable, such as shipping something that makes you question their moral stance? Can actual legitimate creators of media not take sides in the goddamn pro/anti war, thereby making groups of their fans feel alienated from being welcomed by the source? Can we just have fun PLEASE?

Also, just...stop fighting about Reylo. That’s the dumbest thing to fight over and we managed to somehow get the actual SW crew in on that dumbass fight. Some people like Reylo and some people hate Reylo and THAT’S IT. WE’RE DONE HERE.

It sure says something that I worry, before hitting the Post button, that this might ruin some of the relationships I have or inspire a mass exodus of the followers whose names I come to like seeing in my notifications. But it’s ultimately better for all of us if I’m honest.

Ok it took me half a day to even get to words what I just did.

815: Agent for HARM

I fear I am among the minority who really don’t find the host segments in this episode funny.  They’re kind of tedious and frustrating, really – though I do smile at Crow being a character witness – and when the time came to re-watch the episode in preparation for this review, I actually skipped them and got straight to the movie. It’s pretty drab, too.

Dr. Jan Stefanik defects from… somewhere or other, and moves to California to do… some kind of research.  When his assistant Henry suddenly dissolves into a mess of green goo, spy organization HARM decides Stefanik needs a full investigation and sends Agent Adam Chance, a guy who dresses like Mr. Rogers and still manages to sleep with every woman he meets. Stefanik explains to Chance that his country has new and terrible tool of destruction: an alien Spore that reproduces by feeding on human flesh.  That’s right, they’ve weaponized the space mummy fungus from Being from Another Planet!  The movies are coming together into a single, mud-clear, incoherent whole, again!

Y’know, Secret Agent Super Dragon and Danger!! Death Ray weren’t very good, but they could legitimately claim to globe-trotting adventures.  Super Dragon took us to Amsterdam, and Death Ray at least mentioned Rome and Barcelona.  In Agent for HARM we see one beach and a motel in Mexico.  The whole movie seems to be in pastels, which aren’t really urgent colours, and something about the pacing is off.  No matter what the movie tries to tell us, it just never feels like we’re in any sort of a hurry.

It’s not without legitimate entertainment value.  The music’s not bad – it isn’t totally forgettable, but also not as obnoxiously memorable as the theme from Danger!! Death Ray.  The Spore itself is a scary idea and the makeup that represents it is actually pretty good.  I especially like the impression you get that there’s a dark, hollow cavity underneath the foaming fungus, as if the victim’s face is about to collapse.  The improbably complete eyeball in Dr. Stefanik’s sample is entertainingly gross, and I like the glimpse of his lab animals that hint at what his work actually entails.

I’m sure the thing everybody remembers best about Agent for HARM, though, is Dr. Stefanik’s niece Ava. She’s cute and blonde and spends most of the movie running around in tiny little bikinis, and she works for the bad guys because of course she fucking does.  This plot point is so obvious to anybody who’s ever seen a movie in their lives that I’m not sure why the writers bothered establishing it.  The beautiful woman in a spy movie is always working for the bad guys.

I really would have liked to see way more of the relationship between Stefanik and Ava.  Actually seeing them interact at any length might have helped to dispense with the creepy vibe we get from their age gap, her habit of wandering around in nothing but a tiny swimsuit, and Stefanik’s wistful commentary on how close they’ve become.  It’s easy to see why Mike and the bots made some jokes about incest.  Some character development here might also have suggested why Stefanik trusts her, when he surely must have suspected her of spying when she first showed up.  The interactions we see make her look so damn suspicious that if she’d turned out to be genuine, Dr. Stefanik’s actual niece who really does want to help him, it would have been a shocking twist!

What would not have been a shocking twist would be if she turned out to be a robot.  Barbara Bouchet wears so much makeup she looks like she’s made of plastic (or maybe that’s just her face – she looked exactly the same as Moneypenny in Casino Royale and Maria in Black Belly of the Tarantula… man, I’ve seen a lot of terrible movies) and for some reason her hair looks fake.  She moves kind of robotically, too, and the first time I watched the movie I was thinking about the comparison well before Chance declares ‘she’s a machine’.  He may have been more right than he knew.

What’s somewhat mysterious is when, exactly, Chance figured out Ava was a spy.  His drunken boss asks him, but doesn’t receive a straight answer, and when you watch the movie a second time you can’t help but try to figure it out.  Was it when she blatantly tried to distract him by inviting him to go swimming with her, and he said you’re not fooling anyone, Angel?  But if so, why does he later save her when the guy who looks like Prince threatens her, if he already knew it was a ruse?  Is it so she wouldn’t know that he knew?  Was it when he realized the gun she’d given him wasn’t loaded?

I actually lean towards the latter incident as the moment of revelation, because it’s the one he references when he has her arrested. That also explains why he doesn’t give his boss a straight answer – he’s ashamed it took him that long.

The love story in this movie isn’t between Chance and Ava – or Chance and Karate Girl, or Chance and Beehive Secretary – anyway.  It’s the bromance between Chance and Dr. Stefanik.

The two of them start off deeply suspicious of each other. Chance has been sent to keep an eye on Stefanik and he’s quite worried that the scientist may be some kind of spy himself.  Chance threatens him with both death and deportation.  Stefanik, meanwhile, is a man whose main flaw is that he trusts too easily, and he has learned the hard lesson that people who deal in the fate of nations do not make good friends.  He fears the Americans may try to use Spore as a weapon just as his own people did.  The one person he trusts is Ava, and only because she’s family – and boy, did that backfire on him – and even she is not allowed full access to his work on an antidote.

By the end of the movie, Chance and Stefanik come to trust each other totally, and are good friends to such a degree that their separation, reunion, and the reveal of Stefanik’s death plays out like a romantic tragedy.  The captured Stefanik stares at the horizon, waiting for Chance to come for him.  When they reunite, Chance wants to touch Stefanik despite knowing that the stuff in the bags, with which Stefanik is now covered, is deadly.  When told Stefanik is dead, Chance denies it over and over until the proof is staring him in the face.  If one or other of them were a woman, nobody would question that any of this is meant to be romantic, and they’re certainly closer in age than either of these gray-haired men is to twenty-two-year-old Ava.

This is two episodes in a row where I’ve talked about the homosexual undertones.  Do I just have my tumblr goggles on, or are the movies actually that gay?

A certain number of things about this film become a little clearer when you know that it, like Stranded in Space, was intended as a pilot for a TV series.  That’s why there’s not much for locations – they had to keep the budget down so as not to scare the investors.  That’s why they bring up the cancelled date with the Beehive Secretary – perhaps she was supposed to be a regular love interest.  It explains why not just the villains but the good guy of this particular story – Stefanik – must be dead at the end, because the main character can’t form long-lasting attachments that might carry into future episodes when the actors are guest stars who might not be able to come back. Maybe that’s also why Stefanik’s antidote to the fungus also didn’t work, because they were going to use Spore itself as an ongoing plot point.

Spore is an interesting and scary choice of weapon, probably the most interesting thing in the movie, and it’s possibly a metaphor for how communism was perceived in the 50’s and 60’s – as a disease that consumed societies from the inside.  We saw an example of this in It Conquered the World, when Beulah implanted mind control devices in its victims, infecting them with its poisonous view of progress.  The people in Stranded in Space thought Stryker was the one with the thought disease, here to infect their planet.  Now here in Agent for HARM, we have Spore, which enters the human body and turns it into something unthinking and alien, just as Beulah did.  Also like Beulah’s victims, who had to be killed because they could not be cured, once it has started there is no way to stop it.

Ava the ‘machine’ and the compassionless bad guy Malko also fit into this way of thinking.  Their politics have transformed them into things as unthinking and alien as the fungus. When Chance writes the words Jan Stefanik, Human Being on the toe tag, he is emphasizing that Stefanik had succumbed to a disease of the body but not to this disease of the mind.  Yet Chance’s boss reminds him, and Chance agrees, that they, too, are machines – Chance has, after all, coldly murdered several of Malko’s henchmen.  In order to fight these unfeeling enemies, he has had to cultivate a lack of feeling in himself.  Perhaps he emphasizes Stefanik’s humanity partly because he doesn’t feel quite human anymore.

Agent for HARM is okay, but it’s not great.  There’s some interesting ideas in it, under-used, and a number of those glamorous secret agent tropes, over-used.  It certainly doesn’t come near toppling Danger!! Death Ray as MST3K’s best secret agent movie – it’s just too forgettable.

Frances was kind to you and asked whether you were here to see Mr Shelby.

“Yes, he is expecting me” you said confidently and, without questioning you, Frances went to his office, letting him know that you were here.

“Sir, the lady from last night is here to see you. She said that you were expecting her” she told him and, considering that it was only midday, Tommy acted rather surprised when he found out that you were here to see him.

“Did she just?” he thus asked, smiling, before taking off his reading glasses.

“She was rather convincing sir. Shall I ask her to leave” Frances asked and, of course, Tommy shook his head.

“No Frances. Send her in and cancel all my meetings for the rest of the afternoon. I do not wish to be interrupted again” you heard Tommy say to his maid and, before she could even show you the way, you marched into Tommy’s office contently and with a big smile on your face.

“Guess what” you told him and he immediately furrowed his eyebrows at you. He was intrigued about what you had to say to him.

“What is it Love?” he asked, seeing that you were clearly excited about something.

“I bought a dress today and I bought it just for you. Would you like to see it?” you asked almost playfully, causing Tommy to chuckle. By this point, he had no idea what this was about and thought that you must have been up to something.

“I can see that you are not exactly put off by what Lizzie had to say to you last night, calling you a whore. I did not get the chance to speak to you since then because you disappeared, but I ought to apologise for her behavior. I think very highly of you and…” Tommy began to say while looking into your eyes. His blue eyes almost unified with yours and you could see that he was truly sorry about what happened.

“Tommy, don’t! I am sorry that I disappeared last night. The truth is that, yes, I was upset by what Lizzie had to say about me. I needed some time to think about it and the position I am in, but then came to the conclusion that I do not want to waste another thought on this woman. I am worthy of your attention regardless of what anyone else has to say and, unless you disagree, I was hoping that we could spend the day together” you said confidently and the fact that you spoke with this great certainty in your voice excited Tommy. Unlike usually, you were assertive and he liked that a lot.

“Well, fuck Lizzie then, eh?” he teased before telling you that he had already cancelled the rest of his meetings for the afternoon.

“Now, show me that dress you bought for me. I am intrigued” he then went on to say and, what you revealed to him shortly after that, also came as a surprise to him.

“You should be intrigued because it’s very revealing and it’s made from real silk” you smirked before walking towards where Tommy was sitting.

“Real silk?” Tommy asked while, slowly, you unbuttoned your coat and this certainly caught Tommy’s attention.

“Yes, real silk Tommy” you teased as, eventually, you allowed your coat to drop to the floor somewhere in the middle of the room and, when Tommy saw you in what appeared to be nothing more than rather flattering lingerie of some sort, his chin dropped.

“Love, that is not a dress. That is something else” he acknowledged as you approached him and gave him a desperate kiss which was exactly where you had left off the night before.  

“Like I said, I only bought it for you and I want you to touch it. It is so smooth against my skin” you whispered seductively as you put one arm around his neck, and settled into his lap which, too, was something that surprised him and, since you were so confident in your demur, he did not hesitate and ran his hand over the smooth silk that covered your back. It made you shiver and bury your face in to his neck almost immediately where you inhaled the scent of his cologne.

“It feels very smooth indeed” Tommy acknowledged as his hand wandered down to your bottom, then caressed your thigh and leg. He ran his hand over your smooth, belly, and tentatively cupped one breast.

“Tommy” you moaned when you felt him touch you there and Tommy wondered where you were going with this.
