just like how my girlfriend @coastyreef explained in their own post abt a similar topic (this but harumi) nya has grown and shaped into her gender identity basically just like i have as i’ve grown up. believe it or not, i used to HATE nya. everyone in the early ninjago fandom saw him as this “in the way of my gay relationships” character, and that her treatment of jay was horrible, (i could get INTO it abt that actually…. but you’ve probably heard that a few times before) basically a bunch of honestly misogynistic things in the early fandom that made me shy away from openly relating and liking her — so i sorta ran with liking jay a lot more until “recently” (aka a few years ago.. oldhead ninjago fan lol) i mean, my name sparky is literally because of jay so i have to give her some credit🙄

ninjago was and still is a way for me to process my own experiences and look at them from a different angle. ive always struggled with my gender identity/presentation growing up; i have PCOS and i was born with more masculine features then feminine, so in school i’d always be made fun of my body hair and features. i used to really want to be girly, it was a constant battle of myself between being a tomboy or a “girly girl” that continued up until middle school. i was considered dirty and rough, but also weak and annoying because i was a “girl”, so no amounts of masking and faking stereotypical femininity really changed much in my school days. (i remember my INSANE cutesy girly phase in middle school… man that was so embarrassing HAHAH)

i believe around the same time as coast, i was questioning myself too. i went by any pronouns, most notably they/them was at the front of it. i remember a year before this, i had a vulnerable moment with my chest and crying to coast about how i dont feel like a girl and i hate my boobs. which lead into coast saying “hey, we can try he/him pronouns on you and see if you like it!” i instantly retreated in fear because it was a big change that 12-13 year old sparky wasn’t entirely against, but wasnt ready to confront that part of himself. anyways, a year later i’m any pronouns queen, and im warming up to being more open to liking nya and relating to her, but im still considered and seen by others as jay reincarnate. twisted limerence, me and baes first fan season was a sort of catalyst for both of us, and waterjade as a whole was as well DEFINITELY. i mean, that ship since basically d1 was a reflection of our relationship and ourselves in the characters! it only made sense. it was just an insanely slow brewing process honestly

a lot of my own headcanons and musing for nya was internalized and kept under wraps in my own mind, i just coasted along with what coast thought up, or they would force (coax) my ideas out of me, or sometimes even if i was feeling vulnerable enough, (or manic with little to no restraint of my thoughts back then) i’d shyly share some of my headcanons for nya and hope for acceptance.. which i always got, which made me mosey up more confidence with each talk and thought. nyas presentation back then was still feminine af, the personalization laid in the pronouns and genderfluid flag (photos below of my old art.. how i used to draw her heh eww ok ive improved ok..) and the growing fat on her body, because nya being fat made me accept my own fatness/have a more body positive image!

nyas pronouns becoming from she/her to she/he/they was a secret catharsis for me, and as time went on and the he pronoun moved up and the they pronoun eventually left the picture, soon i followed suit. honestly i used to be a little followerish, when coasty began embracing the nonbinary label, i labeled myself as nonbinary too as a sort of starter, because i liked what the label meant and i felt like i related. but quickly, i realized i was mistaken. i still felt out of place, not properly understood of myself, and just plain confused. they/them pronouns never really cut it for me, in fact it annoyed me that people usually referred to me with she/they pronouns, but i buried it because i didnt really know what else i could do. transness and identity has always been complex for me, it was a chasm to move from cis to nonbinary alone. how could i be anything more then just a girl playing dressup with masculine clothes?

one day, at the end of pride month i remember.. i officially came out as genderfluid. it was just a quick post on my story on insta changing my pronouns to HE/it/they + a bunch of neos (some i still have to this day) and having genderfluid in my bio instead of nonbinary. i felt like i was starting to understand myself more, and even though it seemed short and simple to post abt it once, it felt like a huge step to me. early teenage sparky was finally getting somewhere!

this is where time gets testy for me, but i believe me and coastys gender journeys were aligned for the most part, i was just more internalized about it. nya was becoming less feminine and more masculine in appearance, he was gaining more fat and muscles, and spiky, shorter hair. i think the fact our perception of nya didnt align much with the fandoms perception (either a chapstick lesbian with flowy long hair and makeup or the 000.1% who hc’d him as transmasc, but not the way our nya was) made me resonate with her more. at this point in highschool im #1 nya relater, which actually caused me some problems believe it or not. when i became open about liking him to the point of him being my muse i was pushed back into keeping it to myself because 2020-2022 (kin)stagram was SOOO crazy 😅😅but hey im out of that cesspool now as you can see! i still remember the day i changed my name from solely sparky to nya/sparky. it felt so right to take a name thats also a part of my culture (nya is a name that has irish roots, it is also samoan! fun fact!) and that came from my favorite character.

i also struggled with my sexuality and channeled that through nya. for a long time, even when i was in elementary school i called myself bisexual. even though i never really actually liked men all that much, not enough to pursue a romantic relationship with them… or well.. anybody (i tried in the name of conformity and “femininity”) i didnt really like ANYBODY until coast. my emotions have always been restrained and not felt so normally, so i thought romance was like every other emotion: dull and heavily repressed with no way of expressing it. until, again i got with coast HAHAH. i figured out right away through coast that i was on the demi-aroace spectrum but i kept the bisexual label until i guess recently! nya definitely went through the same thing for the sake of convenience in his eyes.

oh but the gender labels and identity didnt stop at just highschool, recently, in my first year of graduating i confronted some deeply repressed parts of myself, and before it was put onto me it was put onto nya. i had a secret headcanon brewing.. something i kept from coast until an explosion of a trend on tiktok… i … headcanoned nya.. as a BUTCH!!!!!!!!!! i felt like the label butch was fitting for him, i was fascinated with the talk and the labels and the history of queerness and lesbianism, but i felt like i didnt belong there at all. i felt so guilty for loving the label butch so much, i just kept it to myself and nya.. my forever muse. coasty, just like they always had, supported me and coaxed that part of myself out of me into the open. they accepted me when i said “hey… what if…. i said nyas a butch…” they even accepted me when i said in a hypomanic episode “kratos from god of war is a butch and has pcos, thats why he has a beard!!” (ty bae) this just goes to show that acceptance goes a long way, and having a character you relate to so deeply does too!!

nyas canonical journey of becoming a ninja and finding her identity feels so much like my own. that scared me when i was younger, but now i feel seen and like hes my number one character. he’s basically exactly like me, the only difference is muscles and race bc im a white boy and i need to hit the gym😅 and im happy to finally be able to publicly say that! for a long time i felt like my identity wasnt mine to own, that everyone else dictated who i was.. but now i can confidently say my identity belongs to me. the power of choosing for myself means a lot to me. now i can say im nya and he is a punk riot grrrl butch who has PCOS and……… a secret third option.. AHHH oh gosh i would love to answer!! Though I must admit that these are built from many (MANY) small moments across the whole game more than a few easily pointed at examples, which means its.. kind of difficult to pull up (and remember) all the evidence.

That being said, i do still have Many Thoughts about it :DDD

First off trans Alphinaud was set into my mind very early on by one simple fact: identical twins are almost always born the same sex. like almost invariably, with the very rare exceptions needing some wild extenuating circumstances. and you cannot tell me those two are fraternal.

now ofc this is fiction, and a fantasy world besides. who's to say the writers knew that particular fact? well good news! alphinaud presents a *lot* of other common trans experiances, which are scattered throughout the msq and optional side dialogue.

(shoutout to me for having the exact same thought four years apart before and after playing the game myself. i have absolutely no memory of the first post at all because i also have no memory of watching my partner play shadowbringers even though i definitely did. rare adhd memory loss win! i got to experiance my favourite thing for the first time twice!)

post 1: dated 2019, talking about how alphinaud is extremely trans coded, being an identical twin of a different gender to his twin, cannot swim, is body shy and *extremely* hesitant about using public showers, and having interests that are traditionally coded as feminine in fiction.

post 2: dated 2023, the same thing but this time talking about how wonderfully alphinaud and alisaie are made to complement each other in opposite ways.

he cant swim: related to the body-shyness and hesitance around the showers, its VERY common for trans people to experiance these things due to dysphoria and societal perceptions. i myself started experiancing this (even though i LOVE swimming) when pubescence started to hit. (it sucks!) alphinaud was probably one of those ones who realised VERY early what he was (logic boy who is too dang smart for his own good) so he just.. never learned to swim at all. kept his nose buried in books instead.

traditionally feminine interests/abilities: sure it could be trope subversion, but personally i think theyre also things he just enjoyed before transitioning and thus continued to do.

and one more that i can remember off the top of my head: alisaie's reaction to estinian mistaking her for alphinaud.

"but alphinaud has no problem with being mistaken for-" let me explain, i swear it makes sense.

see, alphinaud is a little logic boy at heart, we know this. he knows he and alisaie share their features, that is simply a fact. alisaie though? alisaie is ruled by feeling, and reacts accordinly. most notably the Incident when she first meets estinian.

what i find especially interesting about this is that prior to that moment with estinian, neither of them appear to have much issue with their similarities. it's only after shadowbringers that alisaie reacts with such contempt

(probably not helped by her not liking estinian much in general lol)

what this says to me is that some time before or during ShB, alphinaud told alisaie that the way people mistake him for her does bother him, but he can't blame them for the mistake considering the circumstances, so he just doesn't mention it.

alisaie however can and will blame them and thus the next time someone mixes them up (rip estinian) she EXPLODES. because it's not about her. if it was about her i honestly dont think she would care nearly as much. but it's about her brother, and how dare you hurt her brother's hidden feelings by not being able to tell them apart.

(completely seperate headcanon but i do think that estinian is faceblind as fuck, which means he never stood a chance on this one, poor guy)

it’s loud when you grab his hand, the whole room cheering. for what, jungwon has forgotten the moment he felt your fingers against his. he can barely hear you as he reads your lips: “remember this moment.” and suddenly there’s a crown on his head and on yours and then–that force he can’t ever ignore, not with you. the red string of fate tied between the two of you that pulls you together, his hand to your cheek and your lips against his. there’s no more cheering, just the sound of jungwon’s heartbeat and his thoughts. he wonders if you feel the same, if your heart feels so full it might just pop with petals and confetti everywhere, just like his. and when he opens his eyes, jungwon wipes away your happy tears as you laugh into his arms. homecoming royalty–who would have thought? he remembers when he was too shy to talk to you, now he’s ready to stand by your side for as long as possible. jungwon leans in to kiss you again, his mind clear and happy as the camera flash pops and he feels your smile against his lips, and he knows. “promise me,” he whispers against your skin. “always remember?” your arms wrap around his torso, and jungwon wraps his around your shoulders. your always, he decides, is his new favorite sound.

✧･ﾟ: * heeseung - i can see you

messy, he knows, but not sloppy. you two shouldn’t see each other, or so they say. campus rivals gunning for the same position in clubs, the same achievements and awards and accolades. they should hate each other, is what you hear. but heeseung knows he could never, ever hate you. not even if he tried. he can’t even hate how the two of you have to act like spies, covert and not getting caught, because he likes keeping you secret. it’s selfish, really, but he can’t help it. your touch makes him dizzy, even the slightest brush of your hand against his passing in the hall sends his mind into overdrive. the things he sees in his head, what he imagines when he sees you waiting down the hall for him, drives him as he kisses you against the wall with fever. his hands at your waist, yours in his hair. heeseung knows this can’t last forever, so he’s counting the days until you can be his all the time, not just in small stolen moments. when the competition won’t matter, when what’s done is done and he can hold your hand walking to class and give you kisses goodbye. when you can slip into his dorm or he into yours, and neither of you have to worry about being seen. when there’s no more notes, because you’re finally in sync with one another. that’s what heeseung is waiting for, working for.

it’s how, no matter how busy, the two of you always find time for each other. jay isn’t sure when you slipped the note into his lunch, but he’s happy you did. seeing your handwriting and a little smiley face and heart lifts his spirits. especially when people around him are always asking questions and throwing metaphorical rocks: “aren’t you a little too young to know what love is?” but jay does know. it’s how your hand always finds his if you’re standing beside each other. how you’ll talk to each other, debriefing each other about your days, tucked beneath the covers, nose to nose. how, when you can’t sleep, he knows to rub your back in soothing patterns. he shares riddles with you, his notes in your lunch, and patiently waits for you to text him guesses. it’s how, after a long day, you find yourselves draped over each other in a corner of the couch, savoring each other’s breathing and relishing the okay silence. he doesn’t have to talk to you, or you to him. holding each other at the end of the day, you’ve both discovered, is more than enough to recharge. with you in his lap, your head tucked against his chest and beneath his chin, jay can’t imagine anything better. this love, he decides, shines, and it's yours forever.

you came to him like a light, jake remembers. some dumb college party feeling lonely because he knew no one, and everyone only talked to him in passing. then–you. a light at the far end of the room, something he was drawn to. when your eyes met, the spark of recognition filled jake–but he wasn’t sure if he’d ever met you before. then, jostled together by the crowd, he caught you before you fell, hands careful around your arms before letting go. and he remembers wondering if you felt the feeling as well. and no one warned jake about how you would be all he thought about–how his eyes would search for you everywhere, all over campus and elsewhere, because why wouldn’t he? left so wonderstruck he’s surprised he can get anything done. but then–that chance encounter in the stairwell, seeing you again, and jake swore to himself he wouldn’t let you go so easily this time. his first page, his chapter one, begins with will you go out with me? it’s followed by a coy smile and an i will. and now here, months later, as the sunlight streams in through the curtains on this early lazy morning. jake is careful not to move, you’re still asleep. the sunlight, he decides, reminds him of you. a light, full of wonderstruck. he plants a gentle kiss to the crown of your head, and smiles when the hand on his chest holds on that much tighter.

✧･ﾟ: * sunghoon - sparks fly

pouring rain as silence falls over the two of you, and sunghoon waits with bated breath trying to determine what you’ll do next. he didn’t mean to confess like this, soaking wet and just out of arm’s reach at the end of an argument. he had been acting “weird” because he didn’t want to ruin this friendship you had–one that had gone on for so long, but then he said it. i’m so in love with you, and i have been. it feels like slow motion as he watches the raindrops hit your cheeks and you step close to him. sunghoon can’t help it, he laughs, one short hah with a smile on his face because, somehow, you’re still here. he shivers when your hands come up to comb his hair out of the way, and his hands come up to rest securely at your hips. lightning strikes somewhere else, a rumble of thunder coming your way. the harsh yellow street light illuminates your spot in the dark. your hands go around his neck, and now there’s barely a space between you.  “you’re captivating,” you whisper, before closing the gap and pressing your lips to his. you’re sweet and everything sunghoon wished for, pulling apart with a gasp to laugh again, his joy uncontained, he pulls you close, and revels in how you nuzzle into his chest. he’ll miss your touch when you aren’t with him, but he knows you’ll feel the same. and that’s captivating.

✧･ﾟ: * sunoo - when emma falls in love

there have been other’s before you, of course. some came and went, and some stayed longer than others. now: you. the guards he built up at first would never have allowed it, letting you in like this after everyone else. but even when sunoo was unusually cold, you stayed. bit by bit, sunoo felt it. love, the ooey gooey kind that sticks to everything and changes how you see things, even color. because it isn’t just a color anymore. it’s your favorite. or the one you look best in. or the one that matches your eyes. sunoo falls, and he knows others can see it, like how stars shine in the night. and before he confesses, and after a few dates, sunoo locks himself in, paces imaginary ruts into the floor. he tries to talk himself out of it, but his heart talks him back in. he used to always look for the rain, but with you? he finds out his heart fits in the palm of your hand, and as sunoo stares up at you, his head in your lap and your fingers combing through his hair, sunoo is okay to let you keep it. something tells sunoo, this is it. his shelter, his love. and he’s oh so okay with it. he pours out his love, words after words, actions after action, kisses after kisses. yes, there have been ones before you, but sunoo will be damned before letting anyone else come after.

people tell him all the time he should “keep his options open.” but niki knew the moment you walked into the diner he worked at, you were the one. how could you not be? now, here you were, your first official date–one that didn’t include you coming around to see him at the diner. there’s too many feelings running through his body–fear and excitement and nervousness and–god, you’re just right there. inches from him. what should he do? the lakewater laps against the shore down far in front of you two. then it happens. niki turns to ask you something, and he’s forgotten now because you’ve done the same thing and somehow between you leaning and him ducking down–a kiss. your first kiss with each other. you stare at each other, lips askew and kissing each other’s corners. but then, like magic, you close your eyes and break apart just enough to kiss again, for real this time, and now niki’s emotions feel like they’re times ten. after who knows how long–not niki, he could stay here forever–you pull away again. his eyes flutter open, and he savors the redness of your cheeks, knowing his must be just the same. he reaches out to lace his fingers between yours. “be mine?” he asks, and you laugh, a joyous sound niki promises to keep around. you kiss him again. “of course, if you’ll be mine?”

Vash is very supportive of you, patient and does his best to make sure you're comfortable wherever you two are, especially when sharing a room.

You felt bad each time he spread his sleeping bag on the floor, knowing he'd be stiff and sore in the morning. But he reassured you it was fine, he didn't mind it at all. You still felt guilty, giving him the pillows as to make sure he wasn't too uncomfortable.

When you two had first met, it was by chance really. Poor Vash had accidentally collided with you running from a shower of bullets, both of you falling to the ground in a tangle of arms and legs.

He apologised profusely, scrambling to his feet and dragging you along with him, worried you'd get caught in the crossfire. But that was the first time he touched you, and your reaction made his heart throb with sadness, finding a quiet alley to let you go.

Your whole body was shaking uncontrollably, tears running down your cheeks. Each time Vash reached out a hand you flinched away, asking him to not touch you.

Vash respected your wishes, sitting besides you to make sure you'd be okay. The poor guy even gave up his last donut in hopes you'd calm down faster (it may have worked).

Since then Vash has shown patience with your fear of touch, asking for consent first before doing anything in regards to you. And you had gotten better yourself, comfortable enough with Vash to allow him small touches here and there.

He'd always tell you how proud he was that you're getting more comfortable with him, healing even if it was a little.

Another thing Vash found out about you was your lack of expressing how you truly felt, and it was something he was still trying to work on with you.

Most of the time he can tell you don't mean what you say, often resorting to mumbles or quiet whispers, that's how he knows you aren't being honest with how you feel.

Tries to encourage you to express whatever you're feeling openly in his presence, you find this hard but you try for his sake. In public you still shy away from tellng him what you think, worried he'd get annoyed that you didn't want to go down a particular busy street, or store.

Again, he's very patient so he'll never get agitated with you for how long your healing process will take, just know he's there for you.
