ive recently been contemplating just how much of an impact amphibia has had on me as a writer because like... wow. it really did. like, you can trace stuff like preference for writing small dialogue scenes to episodes like Wally and Anne, and both Reunion and True Colours have become my roadmap for writing combat and tension. AND its also the originator of the themes of change that have been popping up all over my writing as of late. like, think about it. project OCtopath has been laden with stories about change thus far (aestia's character arc-forward story, tyrri's crusade of progress, and praem's denial of fate), and believe you me when i say that isn't gonna change any time soon. or ever. AND THEN, forget-me-not (so sorry about not doing anything with that as of late, i prommy that the prologue is in the works) is ALSO shaping up to be about the impact of the protags on each other AND mirror's amphibia's finale with its own (nothing is forever. teehee). like WOW. thank you so much, frog show. you've permanently shifted the way my brain works

INSUFFERABLE l  KIM DOYOUNG
GENRE: mature theme, slight smut
WARNINGS: choking, dom themes, cursing
asshole! Doyoung , enemies to ???
Words : 4k
You’re put in a group project with the most annoying pretentious jerk your law class had to offer. Immediately Doyoung tries to boss you around but you being you, you weren’t taking his shit...soon enough he finds out he can dominate you after all...in a very different way.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Theres no fucking way...no fucking way” you groaned looking at your group project list, eyes narrowing on possibly the worst people within your course year. Slumping in your seat you half smiled at the girl who approached you, one of your fellow members from project hell.
“Heyyy y/n I think we're in a group together” she grinned and took a seat next to you, flipping her red hair over her shoulder and checked herself out in her mirror covered cellphone.
Dami was probably the most narcissistic person you'd ever met and being in law, it was definitely a common trait around here. Dami sat up and began tapping you on your shoulder frantically “He’s in our group! Kim Doyoung is in our group” the two of you watched as the dark haired man conversed with the lecturer, casually turning back to look at the table where you guys sat, in annoyance.
“That guy is such a prick” a guy who slid in the desk behind you, Seungmin said and Dami nodded in agreeance as you all continued to watch him.
“Ive never really spoken to him before” you cocked your head, “What’s so annoying about him?”
This time another group member joined in, a quieter girl who normally sat in the back Jisoo, cleared her throat, “He is really bossy and only likes to do things his own way.”
‘Well he is about to meet his worst nightmare’ you thought knowing nothing pissed you off more than someone telling you what to do.
The muffled conversations around you began to soften as you felt someone stand over you and drop a file on your desk. Looking up, you locked eyes with the one and only Kim Doyoung, dressed in his usual black slacks, black turtleneck and clear rimmed spectacles. He raised his eyebrow at you as if you were supposed to guess what he wanted.
“What ?” you challenged him, folding your arms across your chest and returned an eyebrow raise.
Doyoung sighed in annoyance, his long slender fingers moved across the file and opened it swiftly, “I want you to do roll call” he said coldly.
A lump formed in your throat. You felt like you were being talked down to, it was something that infuriated the hell out of you. He wasn't older than you, nor was he getting better grades than you but somehow he had a superiority complex. Dami quickly nudged you and you rolled your eyes, “Seungmin ?”
“Here!”
“Jisoo ?” you placed a tick as you called out each name.
“Dami, Jangjun…?” you looked around and noticed that the usually loud comedic relief in your classroom was nowhere to be seen.
“I think Jangjun is late, i’ll text him” Seungmin sighed and pulled out his phone. You turned back to the roll call sheet and pursed your lips, “Kim Doyoung ?”
Doyoung just looked down at you, sucking in his bottom lip and raised that damn eyebrow at you again.
“You need to say ‘here’ do you not know how roll call works ?” you tested him and he rolled his eyes and sighed, “here.”
You smiled to yourself, completely satisfied with pissing him off when your internal celebration was interrupted by an out of breath Jangjun, who threw his bag on the floor and took a seat on Dami’s desk. Doyoung looked at him disgustingly, and even though you too were obviously annoyed by Jangjun’s tardiness, was that reaction really necessary ?
“Be on time” Doyoung sneered and grabbed the roll call file making his way back to the lecturer.
“Fuck Kim Doyoung is in this group ?” Jangjun groaned, sharing the sentiments of the entire meeting. You couldnt believe these were the people you had to work with for the week. It's like you could almost feel an outburst waiting to happen, whether it be from you or Kim Doyoung.
Doyoung returned and took out his phone, not really looking at any of you as he spoke, “we should make a group chat to update each other on work”
The group hastily shared each other's details and Doyoung created the chat and pinned a set of three rules.
The first was the group was strictly to be used for the project, no small talk or any other messages that weren't related to the project. The second rule was that no one talks about the group content in private chats as it will cause confusion among members. Lastly you weren't allowed to message after 9pm unless it was an emergency, a very serious emergency.
“Dang is this the military ?” Jangjun snickered as Seungmin and Dami tried their best to hide their laughs. It was typical of people like Dami and Jangjun to not take anything seriously. Their families were well off and they were just studying just for a piece of paper you call a degree. Doyoung couldn't even hide his annoyance, not like he ever did but he seemed particularly pissed off today.
“Look, just follow the rules and all of you get a free pass and then we never have to speak to each other again” Doyoung spat and made his way to the exit leaving the rest of you in utter shock.
———
The first two days were utter hell as Doyoung tried to take control of almost every aspect of the project and frankly you didn't even mind because his business proposal was flawless, it was just the way he spoke to all of you that drove you insane.
“Dami its not fucking rocket science all you need to do is make a clientele spreadsheet with the mock list the professor gave us” Doyoung didnt even lift his head from his laptop, unaware of the impact his words had on her.
Dami pushed away from the desk and her eyes began to well up and before you knew it she was running out of the library, with Jisoo and Seungmin following quickly out of concern.
“Nice move asshole” you rolled your eyes, continuing to work on your laptop.
Doyoung peered up and pushed his spectacles up, “what was that?”
“I said nice move asshole, do you intend to talk to your future clients like that?” He initiated a different kind of anger from you but you managed to keep your cool. Doyoung shrugged as if what he had said to Dami had not carried any weight and continued typing away.
A few minutes of the members disappearance quickly turned to an hour and Doyoung’s nonchalance about the whole ordeal really ticked you off to the point of slamming your laptop closed and pushed back from the desk.
Doyoung quirked his eyebrow at you, “Is something wrong ?”
“Is something wrong” you mimicked him, “Jangjun hasn't come in today because you sent him on multiple errands, and you just made Dami cry over something so ridiculous”
Doyoung sat back in his seat and rubbed his temples, “They're all freeloaders, you and I are the only ones doing work, why do you care so much about them?”
“Basic human fucking decency maybe?” you groaned and ran your fingers through your hair, “listen im not like them, i'm not gonna take shit from you”
“Sure”
“Youre a fucking asshole Kim Doyoung.”
—-
You lay in bed and replayed that scene with Doyoung in your head multiple times. He was so unbothered by your antics nor did he care about anyone's feelings within the group. He was cold, heartless all he thought about was himself. His cold expression was practically engraved in your head, spending all these hours with him was really not your favourite pastime.
Group 7 gc 7:00pm
KDY: I posted a schedule for tomorrow we will be working in pairs on the highlighted sections.
You took a look at his document and groaned when you saw your name placed next to his. There was no way, no way in hell you want to work with him one on one. Not caring about breaking his rule, you pulled up a private chat with him and began expressing your concerns.
y/n  x  KDY : 7:10pm
Y/N: Hi, there's no fucking way in hell am I working with you. Change It.
KDY: I said no private chats and no, I'm not changing it.
Y/N: Wouldn't it be better for us to split and have the others actually DO work for once ?
KDY: I barely gave them room for error, we're going to be the most anyway and besides, I'd prefer someone who can handle...my personality.
Y/N: …..so you agree..you are an asshole ?
KDY: I give people a reality check that's all..
Y/N: whatever makes you sleep at night...can I atleast choose our work venue because If I were stuck in a library again with you I might kill you.
KDY: haha..
KDY: sure.
Y/N: mango drop cafe, 10am.
KDY: cool, see you then.
‘Haha’. You had no idea why that text in particular riled you up. Did he find all of this amusing ? Was he making everyone's life a living hell because he enjoyed it ? You stared at his messages and somehow ended up on his profile picture. He was leaning against a railing dressed in all black with his hooded eyes concentrated on the camera lense, Your realization of how attractive he was came from the fact that you stared at the picture for a good 20 minutes. You wondered who took the picture, a girlfriend maybe ? You shook your head. He seemed too uptight to be getting laid. You sighed, closing your phone and awaited yet another day with the insufferable gorgeous man that was Kim Doyoung.
You arrived quite early at the cafe but of course Doyoung was here before you, already typing away at his laptop, in his usual attire. You greeted the barista and placed an order for a chilled cafe latte before making your way over to him.
“Hey” you said simply and took a seat opposite him in the booth. Doyoung’s ears perked up at the sound of your voice and made room for your books on the table.
“You're here early”
“You're already picking a fight with me?” you said casually setting up your workspace.
Doyoung chuckled under his breath and shook his head, “I just didn't expect you this early y/n it's not that serious.”
You ignored his words and got straight to work, not in the mood to play his little game. You felt Doyoung look at you a few times. You weren't sure if it were to check if youre doing the right thing or he was just looking at you.
“Well i'm done with my part” you stretched your arms above your head and yawned.
“Yeah I'm pretty much done too, Do you want another cup of coffee ?” Doyoung offered pointing to your empty cup. You were taken back by his softer demeanor but quickly nodded, “uh yeah sure.”
Doyoung returned carrying a tray of two fresh cups of coffee and a slice of cheesecake. Setting everything down he handed you the extra fork and placed the cheesecake in the middle of the table to make it easier to share.
“H-how much do I owe you ?” You fumbled in your bag for your wallet.
“It's okay, it's my treat” Doyoung replied, placing a piece of cheesecake in his mouth and slowly licking the fork clean. You gulped as his tongue darted out carefully licking the cream from the metal, not leaving any residue behind. You had no idea what the hell was going on but you felt hot, almost claustrophobic.
“You're okay?” Doyoung asked innocently, unaware of what he was doing to you.
“Why are you being...nice?” You questioned, knitting your eyebrows together as the man continued to act as if this was his usual behavior.
Doyoung pursed his lips and placed the fork on the plate, “You want me to be mean to you?”
“No I just don't get-”
“I apologized to Dami and she told me she only overreacted because the guy she likes, Seungmin was there” Doyoung explained and removed his spectacles, “she was embarrassed to ask anyone for help, I paired them up for today.”
“Wait wha-”
“Also Jangjun works at the campus radio” Doyoung continued, “I had only found out the day we all met, I gave him tasks that will allow him more flexibility, that way he doesn't have to join group sessions often.”
You blinked, unable to form any words in order to reply to Doyoung. Especially after he chuckled at your speechlessness, knowing you didn't bother getting his side of the story at first.
“You were right y/n I dont have to be an asshole all the time, I just like to get my work done” He shrugged. You kept eye contact with him but somehow it felt as if he were still toying with you, waiting on your next reaction. He seemed like he played this game often, making sure he always had the upper hand. Doyoung seemed relaxed as he stared at you, taking another scoop of the cheesecake and slowly ran his tongue over his lips after his bite. What the fuck was he doing ?
“Y/N ?” you heard a familiar voice come from the entrance of the cafe. Your attention diverted from Doyoung to the blonde haired boy who began approaching your table.
“Jungwoo ? oh my God what are you doing here ?” You stood up and pulled him into a tight hug and pecked his cheek. Doyoung shifted awkwardly in his seat as he watched your exchange with the stranger.
“I got off early from class about to go to Subway, are you still doing that group project thing?” Jungwoo looked over at your table and half smiled at Doyoung who tried to distract himself with his phone.
“Uh yeah but i'm all done here I think, wanna hang out ?” you hooked arms with Jungwoo as he nodded enthusiastically. You turned around and scratched the back of your head,
“So...uh”
“Were all done you can go, I have somewhere to be anyway” Doyoung smiled as you slowly began packing up your things.
“Alright, see you tomorrow I guess” you bid your goodbye and headed out for lunch with Jungwoo.
—-
You had just finished up your skincare routine and caught up with a few instagram posts when you noticed Doyoung had followed you. Sitting up in bed you scrolled through his feed curiously. Every post was aesthetically pleasing and he looked absolutely hot in every single one of them. He had to have a girlfriend right ? No guy posts pictures this good without women flooding his DMs.
There was no harm in doing the same since he was in your class, you decided to return the follow and close the app. Suddenly your phone vibrated with a new message in your chats.
Y/N X KDY  10:30pm
KDY: hey
Y/N: aren't you breaking two of your rules right now ?
KDY: haha
KDY: I didn't realize what time it was…
Y/N: ….anyways..is this about work at least ?
KDY: kinda… you left one of your books at the cafe. I have it with me.
Y/N: oh… thank you.
KDY: no prob...oh I hope its not a problem I added you on ig
Y/N: no its okay we are friends I guess
KDY: haha I thought I was the insufferable asshole..
Y/N: you are...but not all the time. Look im sorry for saying shitty things about you.
KDY: its all good.
KDY: …….
Y/N: ..whats up?
You twirled your fingers as you watched the three dots from Doyoung pop up and disappear over and over again. What was taking him so long ?
KDY: that guy….that you met at the cafe..is he your boyfriend ?
Y/N: Jungwoo ? no way we've been friends since high school.
KDY: oh..
Y/N:....why would you even ask that ?
KDY: curious.
Y/N: curious about who I'm dating ??
KDY: A little.
You frowned at your phone and noticed Doyoung had changed his profile picture to a selfie. The picture was..something alright. You bit down on your lip as you enlarged the picture, which showed a wet haired Doyoung with his head resting in his palm and his long index finger was placed between his plump lips.
“Fuck y/n get yourself together” you gave yourself a pep talk before opening his chat back up again.
Y/N X KDY  10.54PM
Y/N: fine if you can ask a question can I ask one..
KDY: go ahead
Y/N: who do you keep thirst trapping for ?
KDY: ….haha thirst trapping ?
Y/N: Yeah who do keep posting these hot pics for huh
KDY: …..
KDY: You think i'm hot ?
Fuck. Why did you word it that way. You groaned immediately regretting sending that message but something in you was so curious about him you decided to just risk it, what was the worst that could happen ?
Y/N: well yeah, I mean I'm sure everyone thinks you're attractive, you seem to know it too.
KDY: wow.
KDY: I think you're hot too.
What the hell was going on. You felt your face heat up and you placed your pillow in between your legs as you turned on your side.
KDY: I was almost disappointed when I thought Jungwoo was your boyfriend, he's way too passive.
Y/N: ...and what makes you think you know what kind of man I need ?
KDY: hmmm
KDY: first of, with that fucking attitude of yours..A dominate one.
You swallowed hard as you felt a tingle in your stomach, squeezing your thighs together on the pillow to create more friction.
Y/N: I could say the same for you.
KDY: You may think youre dominate in many aspects...but when it comes to fucking..im the one in charge.
God you hated how hot that sounded. He had you in the palm of his hand through text. You were a mess and he wasn't even the room to fuel it. You wanted him so fucking bad it was insane.
Y/N: running your mouth doesn't equate to doing it you know...
KDY:.....
KDY: then would you like me to show you ?
Everything happened so damn fast. One minute you two were texting the next minute you were sharing your apartment location and Doyoung was on his way over. You scrambled to put on sexier underwear and do your hair, still in shock by the fact that Doyoung was on his way over to bang you.
You jumped when you heard the doorbell and realized it was him. Opening the door you were greeted to a very different look of Doyoung. His hair was messy and reached his eyes. Instead of his usual black academic attire he wore a loose white vest that showed off his toned chest and arms, along with a pair of grey sweatpants.
“Hi” Doyoung smirked, his eyes were dark as he scanned your figure.
“Hi” you responded, leaning against the wall in the hallway and looked up at him. Doyoung slowly approached you, like a lion circling its prey. His slender fingers danced lightly along your body, drawing a line from your waist until he found your throat and wrapped his cold fingers around it. He bit down on his lip as he studied how perfectly his hand looked around it and squeezed gently, smirking after hearing a soft moan emit from you.
“I want you to do as I say, any back chat from you will get you punished you got that ?” he brought his lips down to your neck and exhaled.
You nodded in response but that wasn't good enough for Doyoung. You felt his squeeze on your throat once more and he used his hips to pin you against the wall, “use your words” he gritted his teeth.
“Yes sir” you replied obediently, and felt him smile against your neck.
“Good girl, and if i'm too rough let me know so I can stop okay ?” he replied, his voice changed and it was much sweeter and genuine than before. He placed a soft kiss on your cheek when you nodded and led you to the bed.
Doyoung lay you on the bed, already stripping off his shirt and ordered you to undress yourself and rid him off his sweatpants. You bit down on your lip taking notice of how aroused he was when you palmed his member.
Doyoung watched you through hooded eyes as you discarded his sweatpants and boxers. He softly patted your head and grabbed a tuft of your hair in order to make you look up at him.
“Spit” he ordered, and held out his hand and you did as you were told. You watched as he lathered himself with it, moaning as he stroked himself. He was so damn sexy, biting down on lip and slowly pleased himself as you watched.
“Do you want this inside you sweetheart ?” he cooed and placed a finger under chin.
You nodded quickly, “Yes please”
“What do you want me to do baby ?” He purred and hovered over you as you lay on the bed, breathing heavily as his fingers moved against your warm skin, tracing your curves, ghosting over your heat and returning back to your lips to insert a digit inside.
Doyoung watched diligently as you sucked on his finger like the good girl he knew you were. He finally pulled his finger out and with one swift movement entered with his member before you could even respond to his question. You moaned as he quickly slammed his hips into yours, wasting no time in gaining a rhythm as you marked his back with scratch marks feeling as though you were on a high.
Doyoung fucked you like a pro, wasting no time to switch positions and had you on all fours, slapping your ass before slamming into you again, that pretentious smirk forming on his face as he heard your whimpers asking him for more.
“Are you ready to cum sweetheart ?” he asked, pulling you up as his strokes became slower and tugged on your ear with his teeth.
“Y-yes yes i'm ready” you panted.
“What's the magic word ?” he growled as he grabbed your throat and slowed down his pace as you were nearing your climax.
“Fuck youre so annoying PLEASE, please let me cum Doyoung fuck”
Doyoung chuckled and picked up his pace until you finally climaxed and he followed shortly after, collapsing in the bed next to you.
“You have such an attitude God” he rolled his eyes playfully, bringing the blanket over your bodies and grinned when you moved in to cuddle him.
“I guess you will have to fix that some time” you yawned and wrapped your arm around his waist, “but I have to admit, maybe I do enjoy the insufferable Kim Doyoung bossing me around once in a while.”

Hey! What do you think of OPM season 2? I still love it & am looking forward to next weeks new episode but i just wish Saitama had more screen time ;-(
hey nonny~!
apologies for the late reply, its a combo of not getting notifications (tumblr u useless trashbucket) and being on surgery rotation (i miss sleeping so much)
firstly, i am truly glad you still love it and look forward to the new episodes!!! 💖💖💖please dont let anything i say from this point on dissuade you from that enjoyment
THAT BEING SAID
///cut for length
ive only watched up to the second episode, and i am having Such Difficulties convincing myself to keep watching. i know my rxns to ep 1 were overall pretty positive and I stand by it but the more i watch the more the Cringe/Hypercritique starts take over.
Turns out, the art style had a bigger impact than i thought on the length of which i enjoy shows. personally, i just really like when anime/shows have a happy marriage between writing and artwork. and when show directors know how to interpret writing, how to set up a scene (the angle, the music, the pacing), and then communicate with artists who have the skills to bring that idea to life using the medium they’re given -- that’s when writing becomes storytelling. OPM’s writing is still fantastic since they’re going off ONE (whereas GoT has the opposite problem where the production value is 4K and the writing is early 2000s livejournal/fanfiction lol god why is everyone dropping the ball in 2019??)
As for the art, since opm switched to jc staff and shingo natsume & co. left for other projects ( ;;_____;; im emo ), its inevitable we would see a drop in animation quality and i find myself constantly getting distracted by things i never used to get concerned about in the first season (bc of the high bar of expectations set by s1 artists/directors, like theres just no way jc staff would match up it to all of that and i feel bad for them, they’re trying their best but that doesn’t mean theyre immune to critique on the artistic liberties that they’ve taken that i feel as a viewer, may not have been the best choice?)
the shading: no, just, unnecessary and distracting and why is it the center of saitamas face, im by far no expert in lighting but a bish can tell something doesnt look right???
the shading pt II: color choices. just gonna say i was not expecting sai’s ‘hair shirt’ in ep 1 to be bright-ass neon green, it was a little jarring at first and i miss him in red ;-; i get hes supposed to have poor fashion choices but i dont see him as the type to pick something that stands out so much in the crowd, like he likes to be left alone. NEON doesnt really relay ‘hi dont mind me im just barely existing here lol’
the shading pt III: genos arms/neck. okaY so the bby looks good in screenshots. like he’s shiny and nice to look at when nothings moving. bUT this is animation?? movement of objections is different from still life manga so making every single scene almost 99% like muratas panels translates a little awkwardly to the screen (like staff is lucky bc murata’s a force of nature with his panels playing out like a movie for ref). but when genos moves, the arms are just distracting bc everything around him is drawn simply without shadows so they stand out by themselves and i (visually) forget about the rest of him haha.
the pacing: it feels scripted, person A says this so we’ll show person A in the shot, then person B is saying something so we have to cut to person B, etc etc like keeping pretty steady to manga lines to the point where i was starting to get bored bc i knew what was coming. it was really intervaled? like someone had to be saying something at a certain effect and i think s1 had more dramatic pauses (lol) but thats how you can place emphasis on scenes to have an emotional impact if the character doesnt say anything and just let the soundtrack do some talking and the cadence of the script will change too (im 10000% talking about the sunset scene in s1 god bless. like it was slow, there was MOOD there wasn’t any rush and really gave the viewer time to think about the relationship between the two characters and what that moment meant to each of them) i feel like there were several scenes that could have been more like in the scene where sai protected fubuki, could have been a little more dramatically emphasized (aka just a pause) so the viewer could get a chance to understand that he purprosefully shielded her or when genos says that strong heroes are drawn to saitama--bUT nope its the same pace, like c l o c k w o r k just like my t eARS--
the fight scenes: how do i even start. the one scene that got me INTO opm (like watching the anime, reading the manga, drawing fanart, writing fanfic, reading fanfics etc) was kickstarted by the fight scene between genos and saitama in s1 that was circulating on tumblr a while back. i thought the characters were interesting and the fight was badass and it just looked SO COOL. (also the forehead flick at the end just kinda sealed my fate). going from that to s2 fight scenes where its mostly cut scenes and freeze scenes?? where theres a cut out behind the characters back?? during a fight scene????? this isn’t a calling card or an anime opening??? i dont understand. when they dont do cut scenes, its interesting but my initial impression is just underwhelmed. i can find good parts but it feels like i have to replay the scene to notice it? theres also an overwhelming amount of graphics/cgi manipulation that overpowers the actual art sometimes. its lacking some of the fluidity that comes from hand drawn fight scenes from first season. OTL
the sound directing: so i thought that the mood just felt off for certain scenes and the sound didn’t seem to support the scene as well (unless it was like the character’s theme or smtg) and i looked it up and the sound director was also replaced (Yoshikazu Iwanami replacing Shoji Hata). i have no idea if the sound director is also in charge of character lines but there were parts were fubuki was monologuing and i had no idea she was inner monologuing, i thought she was talking out loud and that just took extra effort on my part to re-orient myself (im nitpitcking i know but its just how i watch shows lol)
there are still some parts i like about the animation:
fubuki looks bangin and i love her👌👗
all of this just made me realize how insanely lucky we were to have an amazing s1 and just have it exist and how i really could not care less if they had just waited forever to make s2 as long as we had the same crew come back. but anime is still a business and the quicker they dish out merch/seasons, the more money they can bring in. which they do in the short run but they would bring in more if they spent a little more on quality in the long run and it becomes one of those classics that ppl will rewatch and keep recommending to ppl who want to get into anime and oh my god we’re never gonna have that now, are we. if im gonna rec it to a friend its gonna be ‘read the manga!’ or ‘just watch s1!’ uGH. its just an unfortunate situation, its not one person’s fault either, so many factors go into what made opm s1 so spectacular and seeing s2 just made me appreciate s1 more. i guess im happy to have a s2 regardless?
i’ll still watch to support (and bc i like suiryuu and wanna see sai in a karate gi and wig lol). maybe i just have to get used to the new style.
so in summary,

masterlist
“You’re okay...” the words reached you and echo, like they came from afar “Breathe. Just Breathe…” they continued.
Your ears throbbed, there was a constant and annoying chime muffling all another sound alien to that voice. Around you, only darkness was perceived; no sensations, no pain, nothing except for that far voice. It felt as if you were levitating amidst nothingness.
“Open your eyes,” It pleaded sweetly, somewhere beyond the shadows enveloping your body. “Come back.” It demanded “It’s okay. It’s over now. You’re Okay. Please, wake up.” Slowly regaining consciousness little by little you feel your limbs. “Don’t do this to me. I love you so much. Please, come back.” You could feel partial pain all over; arms, legs, and a distinctive pain on the side of your head. The dark veil behind you lids rises and lets small beams of light through, the sight is blurry but you can distinguish shapes hovering above- one of them catching your attention. “Don’t do this to me. Don’t do this to me. I love you. Please, come back.”
“You forgot me,” The words slurred from your lips, followed by a stinging pain and the realization of that lukewarm liquid emanating from your mouth and filling it with the known taste of metal. “You forgot me, Yoongi” He had his arms wrapped around your limp figure, holding you close against him, so close you could even hear how fast his heart was beating inside his chest.
Looking up into his eyes you saw how they glistened, and how the green light of an ambulance shone upon them, lighting his features. Yoongi was a complete crying mess, his whole face was red and swollen, he sobbed lightly, his runny nose and cleaned himself on the shoulder of his jacket while looking down at you, his lips contorted down visibly distressed, nodding repeatedly. “I know...” he cried, anguish filling his words “I know…”
Your eyes closed as you last watched him and how the paramedics tried to take you from his embrace, then the veil closed again and you slipped from consciousness.
Tick, Tock.
The driver hit on the brakes too late, the tires screeched as the car slid and got you.
Tick, Tock.
Your body got a full impact and blacked out.
Tick, Tock.
You open your eyes. It takes a little while to get used to the bright lights but soon enough you recognize where you are- a hospital room. You shift a little realizing you feel numb all over, there is an odd feeling in your arms and realize you have an IV drip attached to it.
“Y/n,” an unknown voice calls your name. “I’m Doctor Jun.” A tall young man enters your field of vision, his eyes are black as well as his hair, he’s holding a light to your eyes and moves it while speaking to you. “You’re in the hospital. I need to ask you a few questions, is that okay?” You raise your eyes to him and try to nod and talk but found you have a collar stopping you from doing so accompanied by a sore throat.  “It’s okay, please don’t move your head.” he stops you quickly. “Blink once for ‘yes’ twice for ‘no’, alright?” you answer him by blinking once. He smiles pleased by your reaction “Excellent. Now, first thing... you were in a car crash y/n, you are fine and well,” he explains calmly seeing you try to move again at his comment “You have some scratches here and there and a light head trauma.” he talks softly and slowly “We will have you here tonight just in case to check there are no further complications to your health, yes?” you nod once. “Alright, I’ll take off this thing so you can be more comfortable,” he commented while gently taking the support of your neck. “Rest and I’ll return later.”
Doctor Jun leaves, its hard to turn your head but you can hear his footsteps walking further away. “She looks good,” you hear him talk, someone is with him but the voice is barely a mumble “She’s conscious and responding well to stimuli. You may enter, however, I must ask you not to stress her, yes?” the stranger responds, again you can barely hear mumbles aside from Dr. Jun’s voice.
You hear footsteps coming closer and it's hard to scratch the need to move your head and meet the stranger’s face, but soon enough you see him- and your heart drops. Yoongi was standing next to you looking defeated, a faint but recognizable scent of dirty clothes reached your nostrils,he didn't shower, his dark-ringed eye bags stood out from his pale features, the glassy, bloodshot eyes, a tell-tale of how he spent the night awake waiting for yours to open. ‘what is he doing here?’ you wondered.
And the memories came flushing.
It was your birthday.
Yoongi and you had agreed some months ago on how the two would spend your birthday together. Yoongi had suggested doing everything you loved, from starting the day at the amusement park, to end the night at some karaoke bar grabbing some drinks and singing drunkenly together, and it all sounded perfect.
“This is going to be the greatest birthday ever!” you sing-song.
“You always do this on your birthday y/n.” he scrunched his nose, not understanding why you looked so excited.
“Yeah, but most times you cannot make it, so we hang out after my birthday.”
“That's true…” he agreed.
“This time you have no choice but to come to it Min Yoongi” you warned, lifting one eyebrow. He shrugged pretending he didn't care about your threat and you pinched the flesh of his arm making him jerk his arm.He hated when you pinch him, you always knew that and would use it to annoy him. “Min Yoongi!!!” you demanded.
Yoongi nodded while caressing the reddened skin while he complaining then dedicated a smirk “Min Yoongi never breaks a promise.”
Until the months to your birthday succeeded.
That was when the friendship started to crumble.
The period of life both you and him were going through was tough, studying different careers and having different jobs took his tool on both. You stopped hanging out and dedicated to other things, like projects- projects that didn't include the other; different social circles, new friendships and whatnot ended up slowly breaking the strong bond you had.
You fought a lot more, you blamed each other for the stupidest things, and you most of all ended up crying on most occasions.
One fateful day, the biggest fight happened.
He said hurtful things to you, and you said them to him as well.
You cried, and so did he.
He stormed out your door four days before your birthday, and you didn't hear from him again.
The morning of the said day you woke up and checked your phone but found no messages from Yoongi. You took a shower, dress-up and walked to the bus stop you both agreed on meeting in order to leave for the amusement park.
Yoongi and you had fought before, but he has never let you down not even once no matter how bad.
An hour went by, you were staring at the screen of your phone, notifications of people wishing you a happy birthday flooded the screen, yet still not a single message from him.
Warm tears started to roll down your cheeks, landing on the phone screen while inside your chest your heart slowly crumbled. You feel embarrassed and broken, you just want to go home so you take one step to cross the street.
But you’re still looking at your phone.
And you fail to hear the klaxon of the bus heading right for you.
“Hey,” Yoongi’s growly voice spoke. His hand reached out with the intention of holding yours, but he hesitated on doing so.
‘Hey,’ You mouthed silently.
Yoongi sniffed and rubbed his nose between his thumb and index finger before pulling a chair and bringing it closer to the hospital bed to sit. He licked his lips slowly and locked gazes with you “Y/n I-...” he started but a knot formed in his throat and made him a cough. “I’m-” he stopped again, his brows furrowed, and his before glassy eyes completely changed while they started to water, he pouted while the muscles on his chin trembled trying to stop his tears from falling, but it was no use, because once he started opening his mouth again to continue speaking his walls collapsed. Yoongi broke down and brought his head down to place it on top of your arm, while he held your hand apologetically repeatedly saying “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry” he was like a child sobbing uncontrollably and holding tightly to your hand.
You grip his hand with the same strength, this action being the only thing you can do to comfort him somehow.
“This is all my fault” he cried out. “This is all my fault.” his shoulders heaved with emotion while the beads of water damped skin of your arm.
“Yoongi,” you said, the sound of your voice coming out rough and rugged.
“It’s like all I can ever do is make you unhappy.”
“No,” you countered weakly. “Never. ”You wanted to tell him it was not his fault, how you too were foolish and how sorry you were because it was the same on your side; pride stopped you from calling him, from trying to make amends.
Yoongi looked up at you, his features stained by hurt and regret. “If it wasn't for my stupid pride you’d never be here. I should’ve been there with you. I never should’ve broken my promise. I realized how foolish I was too late and I-” he stammers, cleaning tears from his cheeks “caused this...”
“Stop!” you suddenly bawled pinching Yoongi’s hand and making him flinch.
“Ouch!” he complained. For the smallest of seconds, he had his iconic annoyed grampa face looking at you and it felt like nothing ever happened- you missed him like this “That hu-” he began when he realized the context in which he was again. You were getting sick and tired of how he was talking and treating you cause it felt like he was saying goodbye while you agonized
“Hurt?” you asked. Yoongi was looking at you poker-faced.”Answer me, did it hurt?”
“Yes!” he answered wide-eyed, stressing the words so you could hear him.
“Does it hurt now?.”
Yoongi looked down at his hand confused “No?”
“Exactly, It’s water under the bridge. Now stop treating me like I’m about to die, the doctor said I’m fine.” you nagged. “I was on my phone and I was dumb enough to not look while I was crossing the street, so stop trying to take the blame for that. Gee this kid, trying to make it all about himself” you mumbled between your teeth jokingly.
“See what I’m talking about” he shook his head sarcastically. “You are in a hospital bed and I somehow made the conversation about me. I am so selfish.” he chuckled unbelieving looking down at his feet.
“You came,” you said suddenly.
“What?”
“You came,” you repeated. “You didn’t break your promise Yoongi.” He opened his mouth to say something but you interrupted the obvious ‘No I did’ ‘I did everything wrong’ etc, preaching. “You did, and that’s all that matters to me.” Yoongi smiled weakly and nodded. You return his gesture smiling widely and caressing his hand. “You said ‘I love you’ Yoongi” you playfully nudged his hand. Yoongi coughed and his serious facade is back again, he looks sideways but doesn’t move his hands away. “You love me, Yoongo?” you ask again pulling him closer.
“Shut up,” he answers, a blush forming at his cheeks trying to hold in a smile.
“You said you looove me, you want to maarry me” you sing teasing and sway his hand until he laughs wholeheartedly and sits again next to your bed.

#SIGCSE2017 Reflections
Mark Sherriff, UVA CS professor, recommended SIGCSE to Zach and I as a great opportunity to tap into CS education at it’s best and he wasn’t wrong. It’s been awhile since I’ve been “just an attendee” at a conference and I must admit I really enjoyed the less stress, more learning opportunity feeling. For me the experience started off on just the right note with Gail Chapman’s keynote. She’s one of my CS edu heroines as a part of Exploring Computer Science. I share many hopes for the future of CS education and frustrations with its current reality with Gail. Here are some thoughts from her talk that resonated with me:
Learning is a uniquely personal experience. How we teach matters. Students need choice of the context, not just the interest of the teacher.
Tool after tool, language after language - what do I remember, I remember how to solve problems.
Rigor is often equated with harder code, teaching the same thing in a different language. It should be about solving problems.
Whether students build it or not, they need to engage in conversations about how tech is affecting their lives.
To date, CS has not been the great equalizer we hoped it would be. Providing new tools and not changing what we teach, just perpetuates inequities.
Make CS required and we think we’re done. It’s not enough to provide access, it’s about what happens in those classes, whose voices are we listening to.
We don’t have any idea of where CS will be in 20 years, not even 5 years.
Therefore, we continue to have a chicken & egg problem, how can you teach it well, if you don’t know what it is?
CSK8
A Literature Review through the Lens of Computer Science Learning Goals
This literature review compared CS learning goals that have been theorized as important vs. what is actually being done by students in K-8 classrooms.
Matched goals:
implementing code - natural language to coding language
evaluating solutions - efficiency
matching problems to solutions - identifying patterns & algorithms
code reading - interpreting
abstracting away details
conditionals and flow of control
loops
variables, data structure & input
Unmatched goals:
designing solutions
using computational tools
matching problems to devices
To me the matched vs. unmatched goals could also relate to standalone CS vs. integrated/applied CS education. The unmatched goals are also the more open-ended ones that I think increase student engagement, but are more challenging to assess.
Arts Coding for Social Good: A Pilot Project for Middle-School Outreach
A group of students at Grinnell College wanted to explore whether introducing CS early to underrepresented students would increase their self-efficacy towards computing. They created a summer camp to explore this question. What they learned after their first year:
making tech camp more inclusive - offer early drop-off & late pick-up, low fee/subsidize, lunch & snacks included, all tools freely available
tech camp surprises? kids have opinions & want to share; some kids just want to code; rename code camp because it limits girls interest
CSDiversity
Diversity Barriers in K–12 Computer Science Education
What are some barriers?
learning curve, accessibility, structural change in school
interest in CS is correlated with teacher/parent recommendation, confidence & envisioning a job in CS
twice as many girls as boys say they are NOT AT ALL interested in studying CS
black & hispanic students are more likely to learn CS outside of the classroom in after-school clubs or groups
31% of girls say they NEVER see someone in the media doing CS who represents them
What are some barrier interventions:
move from lecture to active learning
culturally responsive teaching through POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning)
using browser-based computing tools is important for equity
ask students to reflect on their work & to give you feedback on which assignments resonate with them
There are many awesome resources shared in the TIDES: Teaching to Increase for Diversity & Equity in STEM presentation. Unfortunately this program is no longer running.
CS4All
Mitch Resnick, another CS edu hero of mine, shared the impact of Seymour Papert’s legacy on the work at the MIT Media Lab, Lego Education & beyond.
vimeo
Interested in Class, but Not in the Hallway
What are the goals for #CS4All?
program implementation
teacher training
student tracking
longitudinal lens
student assessment
How student interest impacts CS edu?
interest is not a binary switch - situational interest (prompted by a place or environment) & individual interest (brought into environment by individual)
within there is triggered interest (engagement of a person with the domain) & sustained interest (ongoing, long-term seeking of activities over time)
move from triggered interest to more sustained individual interest
Designing and Developing A Modern K–12 CS Framework
#CS4All is at it’s heart, an education reform movement
why do I have to learn this (loops, conditions, fill-in-the blank standard)? the K-12 CS framework provides the answer
diversity is built into the framework
How to Plan & Run Effective Teacher Professional Development Finally on Saturday afternoon, I attended a train-the-trainer workshop facilitated by Barbara Ericsson (another CS heroine) & Ria Galanos (a new CS heroine). They provided a wealth of information in an easily digestible format. The timing couldn’t be better as we prepare to launch Learn to Learn IV: CS Institute this summer at STAB.
It was also fun to meet some folks in person who inspire me on twitter: @DuPriestMath (CS educator, read her SIGCSE reflections), @lsudol (CS edu advocate), @zgalant (co-founder of @CodeHS), & @MrYongpradit (Chief Academy Office at code.org).

6.6 Million Job Cuts; Luckin Nuts; Zoom’s a Klutz
6.6 Million Job Cuts; Luckin Nuts; Zoom’s a Klutz:
Thanks, I Hate Record-Setting Years
Anyone else tired of records?
I’m not talking about vinyl. My vinyl collection is one of the few things keeping me sane during this quarantine (The White Album, Led Zeppelin IV, Ziggy Stardust, Dark Side of the Moon, Facelift, Paul’s Boutique, World Domination … it gets more eccentric as the list goes on).
No, I’m talking about economic records. We set quite a few of those lately … and not in a good way.
Today, the U.S. Department of Labor reported that a record 6.6 million people filed for unemployment benefits last week. Furthermore, the previous week’s record was revised higher to 3.34 million unemployment claims.
Another record: The two-week total for U.S. unemployment claims comes to just shy of 10 million.
Less than a month ago, claims trickled in at their slowest pace in 50 years. Now this…
Tomorrow, we’ll get an initial look at the official U.S. employment numbers. But the March jobs report won’t show the worst of what’s going on. Economists predict that the U.S. shed 100,000 jobs last month — a bit higher than the ADP figures released on Wednesday, but far from the figures that weekly jobless claims show.
What that means is this: Wall Street has another month to stew in anticipation until we finally get real, hard data on COVID-19’s impact on the U.S. economy. On that front, economists project that the April report will show losses of 10 million jobs or more, with the unemployment rate spiking above 10%.
The Takeaway:
Yesterday, I called the market’s recent rally a head fake. I stand by that statement.
There’s a tenet in sentiment investing that says something like: When the market rallies in the face of overwhelming negativity, that’s a good thing.
You’ve heard the saying “climbing a wall of worry?” That’s what we’re talking about here … or are we?
You see, to truly climb a “wall of worry” investors need to know all the facts. All of the negativity and downside risks need to be priced into the market … into stock prices.
Right now, they aren’t. We don’t know the full extent of COVID-19’s impact on the U.S. economy — or any other economy for that matter.
And yet, the market rallied today in the face of 6.6 million jobless claims and the prospect of 10% unemployment. Wall Street acts as if we already saw the worst that COVID-19 can throw at us … as if Wall Street has all the facts.
Truth be told, if all the facts were known, this would be the time to buy.
But we’re still in the dark regarding a broad swath of the U.S. and global economies.
What I’m trying to say is that, unless you’re a day trader or a speculator, this relief rally is a sucker play. Stocks will fall further as more economic data is reported. We haven’t seen the worst and it will have a negative impact on the market as a whole.
Now is the time to keep your powder dry, hold until you see the whites of their eyes, sit on the sidelines or whatever idiom you prefer. A golden time for investors will come when this is all over, and you don’t want to jump the gun and miss out on real opportunities when they finally arise.
This too shall pass, and Great Stuff readers will be prepared to take full advantage of the new, post-COVID-19 market when it arrives.
Going: Let’s Make a Deal
If you’ve speculated on energy stocks lately, today was your day to make bank!
Behind door No. 3, we have President Trump tweeting the possibility of a truce between Saudi Arabia and Russia:
Just spoke to my friend MBS (Crown Prince) of Saudi Arabia, who spoke with President Putin of Russia, & I expect & hope that they will be cutting back approximately 10 Million Barrels, and maybe substantially more which, if it happens, will be GREAT for the oil & gas industry!
That was all it took to send oil prices soaring 20%. Sector leader ExxonMobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) jumped 8%, while Royal Dutch Shell PLC (OTC: RYDAF) spiked more than 12%.
The bottom line for the energy market is that someone in the industry needs to do something. We’re quickly running out of places to put the oil we’re producing, leading some analysts to project negative prices for “black gold.”
As with the rest of the market, don’t let this 20% spike lure you in.
Going: “Zoombombing”
From COVID-19 darling investment to pariah in two days? Sound impossible?
Not if you’re Zoom Video Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: ZM). The videoconferencing upstart saw a wellspring of users flooding to its platform amid the coronavirus quarantine. Today, the company announced that daily active users skyrocketed to more than 200 million from just 10 million in December.
That’s a truly massive increase in customers, and it’s one that ZM investors would typically cheer. “Would” is the keyword here. In the past week, Zoom:
However, as seen with Facebook, the general public tends to shake these things off rather quickly — if they’re even aware in the first place.
Additionally, Zoom took measures to quickly address these concerns. It stopped sharing data with Facebook, started work on a patch for Mac security and issued guidelines on how to avoid “zoombombing.”
The bottom line for investors here is that Zoom is quickly becoming the next verb for videoconferencing, just as “Skype me, bro!” was before it.
If the company can overcome these latest privacy issues, Zoom has massive potential. It could become the de facto solution in videoconferencing, which should last long after the quarantines are over.
Gone: Luckin Nuts
Misconduct? Fabricating transactions?
Someone’s had a bit too much caffeine. Luckin Coffee Inc. (Nasdaq: LK) is in hot water today, after it announced that it began to investigate “misconduct, including fabricating certain transactions” carried out in fiscal 2019.
The company appointed a special committee of independent directors, suspending Chief Operating Officer Jian Liu along with other staff implicated in the misconduct. In a statement, Luckin said:
As a result, investors should no longer rely upon the Company’s previous financial statements and earning releases for the nine months ended September 30, 2019 and the two quarters starting April 1, 2019 and ended September 30, 2019, including the prior guidance on net revenues from products for the fourth quarter of 2019, and other communications relating to these consolidated financial statements.
That’s not just crazy, that’s Luckin nuts. You can basically throw out all of last year’s financial statements, earnings and guidance for the Chinese bean water boiler.
Combine this with the Chinese coronavirus quarantines, and it’s no wonder why LK stock is down more than 82% from its January peak. Bargain hunters beware, LK should eventually rebound, but there could be more downside in store before all this is over.
In this ever-changing world of kooky coffee conspiracies, there’s one thing I can always look forward to: your emails!
You Marco, I Polo … it’s Reader Feedback time again.
The Long Run
No rescue bill is goin to save America and its people unless and until the U.S lockdown for at least a month just like its friend India. America just needs to stop all commercial activities. its offices, malls, shopping centers and trading makers.
[…]
This is a long term investment that U.S needs to invest in right now … Just think beyond markets. Be human. Market was not there before you and will not be after you. Only thing that matters is us as a species. We can still act before it’s too late and give a better future and markets to our future generations.
— Abhinav D.
Abhinav, well said! Forgive me for keeping your email brief here, but I wholeheartedly agree with you.
Just last week, Great Stuff remarked that you can pass a spending bill worth however much you want — keeping some oil on the economy’s spinning gears — but that won’t rehire the 6.6 million people who are now jobless.
That said, the people who most need to hear your point won’t think they’re the problem. I tell you, the stubbornness that stay-at-home orders have inflamed in some people … why, it’s like an old man trying to return soup at a deli.

I see your point, and raise you this: 42.
Buy inverse ETFs.
— Louis L.
I must give due diligence where due diligence is due. You, sir, are cleary a tried-and-true Great Stuff reader! Why, we recommended an inverse exchange-traded fund (ETF) — the ProShares Short S&P 500 (NYSE: SH) — back on March 16. Kudos to you, Louis…
It’s a veritable hootenanny (that’s a technical term … in Kentucky, at least) of risk tolerance in these markets, and I should’ve known some Great Stuff readers are eager to bear the storm.
From early responders in yesterday’s Poll of the Week, roughly a quarter of you are picking gems from dirt in the beaten-down energy sector, with another 11.5% braving the biotech boom. (If any actual COVID-19 relief comes from the dozens of these biotech stocks turned overnight vaccine experts … some of you will have a field day!)
Yet, by and large, nearly half of you are bargain hunting in emerging tech trends. From 5G to the Internet of Things, I can’t blame your enthusiasm — trust me, faster connections can’t reach my neck of the woods soon enough!
Now, if long-term, high-growth tech trends are your thing, Ian King’s research in Automatic Fortunes could be perfect for you. Not only does Ian find the right tipping-point trends that should outlive the virus shenanigans, but he also pinpoints each trend’s standout leader.
It’s that simple and the 5G explosion is no different.
Click here to learn more about Ian King’s tech research!
Have you written in yet? What’s stopping you? Drop me a line at [email protected] and let me know how you’re doing out there in this crazy market.
That’s a wrap for today. But if you’re still craving more Great Stuff, you can check us out on social media: Facebook and Twitter.
Until next time, good trading!

Questions About Fuel Efficiency, Savings Bonds, Materialism, and More!
Whats inside? Here are the questions answered in todays reader mailbag, boiled down to summaries of five or fewer words. Click on the number to jump straight down to the question. 1. Trading up for fuel efficiency 2. Average age of credit accounts 3. Switching to one vehicle 4. Found this great stock! 5. Canadian pharmacies 6. The rental lifestyle 7. Investing in treasury notes 8. Toaster oven purchase 9. Series EE savings bonds? 10. Spotify worth it? 11. Library book sale excess 12. Books on curbing materialism I regularly spend a lot of time thinking about ideas that are really useful in shaping my life as a whole, with personal finance as a significant part of that life. The challenge for me is relating those ideas in a context so that their value to my financial life is clear. I basically see life as a series of interconnected areas. Physical health. Mental health. Focus and concentration. Spirituality. Intellectual ideas. Marriage. Parenting. Key social relationships. Community relationships. Hobbies. Finances. All of those things are interconnected. All of those areas have at least one strong connection between each of those other areas. Your finances do not live in a bubble. I could literally write an article on the connection between any two of those things. In fact, I might actually write an article about each of those areas and how they connect to finances. Because of that perspective, when I find an idea thats really useful in one area, it turns out that the idea is often useful in many other areas as well because it tugs on those connections. For The Simple Dollar, Im interested in all of those things, but Im particularly interested in exploring that areas connection to finances and how that improvement lifts up ones financial state. That goes alongside topics that are focused largely on financial benefits, like frugality topics. The truth is that if I didnt see those connections to finances and I didnt realize how much the other areas of my life support good healthy financial habits, financial independence would be a far more difficult journey. While the actual mechanical steps for improving ones finances are easy, maintaining them requires strong connections and support from the other areas in life, which is something Ive really come to appreciate in recent years. Its all connected. On with the questions. Q1: Trading up for fuel efficiency I am trying to make a decision about trading in my vehicle for a more gas efficient one. My daily driver is a Jeep Wrangler and while I enjoy driving it, it isnt so great on gas mileage. I currently relocated to California where gas prices are higher than my previous home in Texas. With my commute to work alone (approx. 40 miles) I spend about $100 a week on gas. My Jeep is paid off, but Im wondering if it makes sense to trade it in for something that does a little better on the gas mileage front. Crunching the numbers, it makes sense to think about trading it in but I really enjoy having the vehicle. Any suggestions on making a decision about getting rid of something you love for the greater good of saving money? Rick Based on my guesstimation as to the age of your Jeep Wrangler, it looks like it gets about 15 miles per gallon on average. That lines up well with your $100 a week in gas costs given your commute and the assumption that you use it for a few other things. If you swapped it for a Toyota Prius, for example, your fuel costs go down to about $30 a week, as a Prius approaches 50 miles per gallon. Over the course of a month, thats about $280 in savings. Its probably going to be cheaper in terms of insurance, too. The thing Id ask myself when comparing the Jeep and the fuel efficient car is what exactly you get out of the Jeep that you wont get out of the fuel efficient car, and is that difference worth $300 a month to you? That is the lens through which I would evaluate that purchase. What I usually find in situations like this is that the lower cost item often has much of what I like in the higher cost item and breaking it down to paying a lot of money for relatively minor features seems silly. Its also worth noting that you actually have more options here than just keep the Jeep or sell it and get a very fuel efficient car like a Prius. You also have the option of moving closer to where you work which saves a lot on fuel regardless of what vehicle you have and cuts down the time invested in your commute. You might also look for work closer to where you live if moving isnt an option for some reason. There are lots of things to consider here. Q2: Average age of credit accounts Instead of opening a new account which would lower the average age of my credit accounts, should I increase my credit limit on a secured card? Currently it is at $800. I could deposit another $200-$300 to raise my limit. Stephen Its not the average age of your credit accounts that really matters in terms of your credit score. Its the age of your oldest active account that matters. There is a minor negative impact on your credit score from opening a new line of credit, but its minor and short lived. Often, that impact is counterbalanced by having a better debt-to-credit ratio (meaning the sum total of your credit card balances divided by the sum total of your credit limits). If you open a new card with no balance, your total credit limit goes up but your debt stays the same, this improving your credit score (this only works to a certain extent, but will definitely work if youve only got one card and are opening a second one). In your shoes, I would definitely open an unsecured card if youve been handling the secured card well for a while. I wouldnt close the secured card for a while, though. Leave them both open, then close the secured one (and get your deposit back) in a few years. Q3: Switching to one vehicle While evaluating my year-end financial moves, I wondered if I could switch down to one vehicle to cut expenses. A Google search led me to an article you wrote on eliminating one car. Id like to give you some information and get your thoughts on it. I live alone and travel regionally for work. I bought my second vehicle in late 2017 to tow a trailer with my sons racing kart. I can probably drop the full coverage insurance on the vehicles to save some money. I have a 2010 Honda Civic with 248,702 miles on it. I get about 32 mpg and drove 34,529 miles last year. I had $1933.36 in necessary repairs last year. The 2018 annual insurance was $467, the 2019 cost is projected to be $594. I also have a 2006 Honda Ridgeline with 147,422 miles on it. I get about 20 mpg when I am not using it to tow and drove 4,851 miles last year. It may be higher but I only used it when needed. I had $572.07 in necessary repairs last year. The 2018 annual insurance was $148, the 2019 cost is projected to be $301. Kevin If you think its possible with your lifestyle to cut down to one vehicle, you probably can do so. Its usually professional constraints or other life constraints that keep people from being able to pull it off, so if you dont see such an issue in your life, you can probably do this. The big issue I see is that the Civic is going to be far better for commuting, but the Civic cant tow. Do you have any other option for towing that cart? Do you have a solution in place for what the Ridgeline does for you if you drop it? If you do (or if you come to the conclusion that you dont need the towing ability), then Id drop that Ridgeline like a hot potato and keep the Civic. As many miles as youre driving, the fuel efficiency of the Civic is going to save you a ton of money on gas versus driving the Ridgeline that much. I think that if you drop the Civic and keep the 2006 Ridgeline and put almost 40,000 miles a year on it, the gas costs are going to be stupendous. My back of the envelope math says youre better off keeping both cars as they are right now rather than switching to an all-Ridgeline solution. Q4: Found this great stock! Heres a brain teaser for Trent: My boyfriend bought shares of MORL about two years ago and put it on automatic DRIP. Now he gets about $600 a month on average gross. I studied this stock and I just dont really understand it, but it seems like its just about like printing money!! But if it is so great why isnt everybody in it? So dont publish this on your Q&A thing, because I want to keep this quiet. Not looking for a pump and dump scenario, just wondered your thoughts on it. Anna MORL is the stock ticker name for UBS ETRACS Monthly Pay 2xLeveraged Mortgage REIT ETN. Basically, its a bundle of mortgages put together by UBS using borrowed money. Imagine that someone borrows $100,000 to buy an investment. They owe interest on that loan, but theyre fine as long as the investment offers a better return on that loan. Now, imagine you used that investment as collateral for an even bigger loan, which you then used to buy control of mortgages, so that people paying their mortgage bills are actually now writing the checks to you. You can often buy mortgages at below face value a $200,000 mortgage might be on sale for $150,000 or whatever if someone needs money fast, so if that mortgage ends up getting paid off, you make $200,000 plus the interest over the course of a few years. This is a great way to multiply your money, but its really risky. If enough people stop paying their mortgages, you are in bad, bad shape because you cant afford to pay the interest on the loans you have. The whole thing falls apart. Thats what MORL is. MORL is an extremely risky investment that only works well while the housing market is stable and interest rates are low. Its double-leveraged and uncollateralized housing debt, which basically means that if people were to suddenly have difficulty paying their mortgages (like what happened in 2007 and 2008) MORL is going to tank hard. Double-leveraged essentially means it rises twice as high when things are going well and falls twice as hard when things are not going well. I would not hold that investment for anything I was relying on for the future. If youre playing around with investments with money you can afford to lose, sure, but thats basically to gambling. Q5: Canadian pharmacies Im curious about your opinion on Canadian (or other foreign) pharmacies. My husband used them back in the day while caring for his mother. I tried one or two and wound up (computer) virus laden. Are there any good sites for Canadian pharmacies? Is it better to go straight to Canada for better prices? Doug So, heres the deal. Bringing prescription drugs into the United States from Canada is illegal under the Prescription Drug Marketing Act of 1987. However, because of the vagaries of having to deal with every special case of people living along the US-Canadian border, the DEA and the border patrol do not really enforce the law provided youre getting 90 days or less of a prescription filled and its not a narcotic. Basically, they just look the other way because its easier than dealing with the specifics of a case and the bad press that would come from taking away an 87 year olds arthritis prescription or a diabetic persons insulin. To exploit this loophole actually, just an unenforced law a lot of online pharmacies have popped up supposedly dealing in Canadian pharmaceuticals, but a lot of them are pretty dodgy. Theyre already doing something illegal but unenforced and its a market that reputable companies will largely stay out of because the whole thing relies on the US government not enforcing its laws. You may be able to luck out and find a reputable seller online, but there are a lot of sharks in the water because its actually illegal. Id avoid it unless youre actually going to Canada and buying the prescription drugs in person there, buying a small amount, and then coming home. Even then, youre breaking the law, but its a law thats not been enforced for a while. Q6: The rental lifestyle We are at retirement age and are thinking about buying a 5th wheel as our home for a number of years, as we are late to the savings game. It seems that used vehicles are the same price as new, and all of them expensive. What do you think about this alternative lifestyle choice that doesnt include real property? Amber It seems reasonable. I have met many people who have retired to a camper or a trailer. Many of those wind up parking semi-permanently at a campground and serve as campground hosts, so it doesnt seem like that unusual of a choice to me. (This shouldnt be surprising our family goes camping somewhere probably half a dozen times a year.) I think the key is to be sure youve priced everything out and be open to part-time work, both as a way to make ends meet and as a way to fill your time. I also know a lot of retirees who find themselves without much to do to fill their hours once theyre retired. If it seems appealing and the math works out, go for it. Thats my advice. Q7: Investing in treasury notes Question for you: I recently recovered some unclaimed property that I had lost to the state 12 years ago that they sold 8 years ago. I lost dividends for 12 years and lost the value the stock rose after it was liquidated. I wish to make up for my mistakes, so I was thinking of investing the money in T bills as I could use more stable investments. Do you have any opinions on T bills? Amy My feelings on US treasuries are that theyre about as stable as can be in terms of an investment but the returns they offer are really low these days, so low that theyre often matched by savings accounts. Theyre rock-solid and they do offer a tiny return thats as guaranteed as can be in this world, but the return is so small that I would not bank on them as a long term investment. You dont want to lock your money up for many years in treasuries that are returning less than 3% unless you truly need something rock solid. At this point, Id probably just put the money in a savings account or a money market account instead and buy them when interest rates rebound. The question of what kind of stability you need in your overall investments is something I cant judge without seeing your full portfolio. Q8: Toaster oven purchase Im hoping youll evaluate a recent purchase using your buy it for life philosophy. This detailed evaluation is overkill for a single, cheap purchase, but it would be valuable to have a good strategy for similar future purchases. I needed a new 4-slice toaster oven and decided to buy one at Walmart during a weekly shopping trip. Given the low price, I couldnt justify spending the time or gas on a trip to another store. I also didnt think Id find many quality online reviews of sub-$30 toaster ovens. The options that satisfied the size and features criteria were a $20 Mainstays brand model or a $25 Black & Decker brand model. I was skeptical that the Black & Decker model would last 25% longer, or be 25% more effective. Second, a toaster oven is relatively simple I doubted there was any game changing technology that B&D incorporated into this model that the cheaper version lacked. My cynical mind also suspected the B&D model was only branded as such after being manufactured in a random factory. I bought the cheaper model. What would you have done differently? Kevin I would have bought the cheaper model, but I would have probably waited a week and scoped out the local Goodwill first and bought whatever I could find there, as you can usually find toaster ovens there. Aside from the Goodwill caveat, I basically agree with your way of thinking. I might have done some homework on toaster ovens beforehand by looking at Consumer Reports or other guides, but honestly, theyre simple devices to perform a simple task and arent overly expensive, so youre probably fine in this case. While I have no evidence for it, youre probably right on the relabeled Black and Decker. Many items like this are functionally identical inside and have just a slightly different case on the outside. There really isnt a whole lot of variance in toaster oven internal parts. Q9: Series EE savings bonds? I have been buying series EE savings bonds for my grandson for years. My son says that theyre not a good investment right now and that a better gift for his future is to contribute to a 529. Thoughts? Amber I agree with your son. Series EE get very low returns right now; theyre best in environments with high inflation and high interest rates, neither of which is true at the moment. With a 529, the money can be invested more aggressively for much better long term returns if the account manager so chooses. My only qualm here is the gift horse in the mouth issue. I hope that this discussion was a tactful one. Its hard to say from the description. I consider complaining about a gift to be a pretty rude move. If you have a relative giving savings bonds and would rather they contribute that money to a 529 for your childs future, thank them for the bond, wait for a while, and then have a conversation with them about how youre saving for your childs college education. Mention that anyone can contribute to the fund, but let the gift-giver decide what to do with their gift. Its their choice, not yours. Q10: Spotify worth it? I used to listen to the radio constantly. There used to be a radio station near here that played great music of a wide variety, from rock to bluegrass. The station was sold and now plays modern bland country music. I have tried listening to other stations but havent found anything I like. Considering trying Spotify or XM but wary of adding a monthly fee. Are they worth it? Ashley We have a Spotify account that we use as a family. It is often being streamed through speakers in our family room or in our daughters bedroom. My feeling is that such an account is worth it if you listen to a lot of music and want it to just stream and mix up song selections on its own without ads. If you dont listen very often, I wouldnt subscribe. My suggestion would be to try Spotify with a 30 day trial offer heres the link. Set a reminder on your phone 27 days from now that reminds you to cancel it if youre not using it. Then, install the app and try using it as you would a radio. My best experience has been with an inexpensive Bluetooth speaker. Q11: Library book sale excess Our local library has a book sale every year where you can go in on the last day and fill up a box for $2 which I have done for years. I finally realized that I had filled up half of our spare bedroom with books Ill never read from those sales. I would end up grabbing 4-5 that Id actually read and 40 that I wont. What do I do with all of these books? I dont want to throw them away. Anna My first suggestion would be to have a super cheap yard sale. If your town has a community wide yard sale, announce that youre selling books, put them all out there for a quarter each on the first day, then knock it down to a dime each the second day, then a nickel each the third day. People will clean them up if you advertise it a little. Another suggestion is to start dropping them in little free libraries around town. Just take some with you and whenever you see a little free library, stick one or two of those books in there. Itll put that book in the hands of someone who will read it. If nothing else, you can always donate used books to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Theyll almost always accept used book donations. Q12: Books on curbing materialism Something Im struggling with is my relationship with stuff. Ive been thinking about it a lot lately. I think I feel like to some extent that my worth as a person is tied up in the stuff that I have, like I cant really enjoy books without a large personal book collection or I cant really be a good home chef without a lot of kitchen gear. The thought of getting rid of stuff really hurts because I feel like Im agreeing to be worse at something or less at something. I think this is a feeling youre familiar with. Do you have any advice or any books on how to curb this way of thinking? I need to stop accumulating stuff and start downsizing. Jim The easy answer would be the ever-popular Marie Kondo book, but I think youre asking a somewhat different question than what shes answering. I have three suggestions for where I think youre at, ranging from the more practical to the more philosophical. The first is The More of Less by Joshua Becker, which is definitely the most practical of the three books Im suggesting here. Beckers key argument is that owning too much stuff keeps you from the experiences you want to have because youre constrained by space and clutter. Thus, take the approach that even a small fraction of your stuff represents more than a lifetimes worth of experiences and pass on the remainder to those who will value it. It only takes a small fraction of the stuff you have to represent your life. The second is Goodbye, Things by Fumio Sasaki, which is in the middle in that its a mix of philosophical and practical. This book, to me, focused on the connection between your sense of well being and the environment you inhabit and how that interconnection flows both ways. While it dives into practical steps, it focuses on how those steps reveal and promote a symbiosis between your own well being and your immediate environment. The final book is very philosophical Erich Fromms To Have or To Be? Fromm steps back from the practical but rather dives in a very thoughtful way into why we accumulate things. His argument is that we do so because we view them as a shortcut to a particular type of experience we yearn for, but that the item often serves as a substitute for that experience, an empty calorie that leaves us unfulfilled. This book ends up being an argument for experience rather than possession and I found it to be the most convincing but least directly practical of the three. Read this one to feed your thinking and inspiration; read the others for more connections to practical steps. Got any questions? The best way to ask is to follow me on Facebook and ask questions directly there. Ill attempt to answer them in a future mailbag (which, by way of full disclosure, may also get re-posted on other websites that pick up my blog). However, I do receive many, many questions per week, so I may not necessarily be able to answer yours. https://www.thesimpledollar.com/questions-about-fuel-efficiency-savings-bonds-materialism-and-more/

How much can I expect to pay for a dented car door?
Actually, an off-duty police office hit my 2000 Dodge Stratus with his 2002 GMC Sierra while turning into a parking spot. The rear passenger door has a fairly large (about one foot in length and about a half inch at its deepest point) dent. The paint (I'm assuming) has a large crack running under the dent. The scratch from the impact starts at the bottom left of my rear bumper, and continues on the bottom left side of my car before the door starts, and continues to halfway through to the other side. The paint isn't scratched too deeply, and could probably be fixed up without too much work. His insurance is paying for it all; but they're going to give me a check based on an estimate - I'm just trying to figure out, going into it, what kind of estimate I can expect so I don't get taken advantage of. ""I got pulled over, and failed to surrender insurance?""
I was driving my friends home from a party one night, (being a DD), unfortunately I was caught going 123 in a 90 zone, and then I got pulled over. The police officer told me that not only I was speeding, but I was driving past midnight with a G2 class license. But the only thing I was charged with, was a 65$ fine for not surrending insurance, because I was driving my Dad's truck and could not find the insurance papers ANYWHERE. Since the police officer said there were no demerits to be added, does this mean my insurance rates will go up? I plan on pleading guilty and paying the ticket.""

Does the Affordable Health Care law really prevent insurance companies from denying pre-existing conditions?
They say that now, insurance companies can no longer deny insurance to people with pre -existing conditions. So what was HIPAA passed in 1996 for? This law states that insurance companies CAN NOT deny people with pre -existing conditions. The only change I see is it gets rid of the 12 month exclusion period. I had two aunts with lupus, both lived in California and had insurance, until they moved to Texas. If they could have kept their insurance, they would have, but for some odd reason liberals are against insurance across state lines. They had no problem finding insurance, they just had to be out of pocket for 12 months. HIPAA also states that if you can go six months without any medical visits, advice/procedures, insurance companies are not allowed to look further than that and must not apply the exclusion period. So did the Affordable Care Act really stop insurance companies from denying coverage for pre existing conditions, or was it ALREADY a law? http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/faqs/faq_consumer_hipaa.html""

I had no idea how hard it would be to write a blog post every week whilst raising three kids, a husband child, and attempting to look after an elderly dog. I always set myself challenges and hope to be one of those Mums that dedicates every Tuesday to blogging, and then get cross with myself for not making happen. Its funny I see myself as a Do’er, on top of things, the kind of Mum that never lets plate drop but recently, well, since Mouse was born – I have learnt that I am not one of those mums as often as I would like, and Im pretty much ok with that. Its quite a learning to let go, and realise the difference between IMPORTANT and IMPERATIVE and how to use it in your daily life.
Its Important that I write my Blog, as I love to write and share my thoughts and findings, buts its Imperative that I don’t too much on a daily basis, otherwise I end up in a flap, and get nothing done. And thats not helpful to anyone…..
This week I have discovered a new PARENTING BUZZPHRASE. It may be short lived but its currently working for me in helping Birdy make the correct choice for her reactions, but its also helping me deal with these outbursts. Its not news to anyone who knows us that Birdy is a fiery spirited kid,  and that her go to emotion is anger and doubt – which is sad to see, and testing to the max but not impossible to overcome. Ive tried the count to 10 before answering or reacting – but when you are 8, 10 seconds is a very long time and not really plausible. It needs to be shorter, quicker and easier to say for it to work, and it needs to  roll of my tongue with ease and work in many situations otherwise I sound like a walking parent handbook.
Helpful or Hurtful!
Helpful or Hurtful – think about it……
Every reaction, emotion, word, action and thought we make is a choice and has an impact on the next sequence of events. Birdy always tells me thats its not fair, I (Her Mummy) get to make all the choices, and the she hates being a child because she doesnt have a choice! WELL THATS THE INTERESTING BIT – She may feel powerless at times during the day, actually we may all feel powerless at times of the day but we ALL have the most powerful tool thats free and easy to use at every given opportunity – THE POWER OF CHOICE. The power to choose our words, thoughts, plans, reactions, wants, needs and ideas – and better yet if you made a wrong choice…guess what – just choose again!
Is it Helpful or Hurtful?
Is it HELPFUL to throw your bike on the ground when Mummy asks you to jump off to cross the road?
Is it HURTFUL to you when the bike whacks your leg?
Is Mummy being HELPFUL by keeping you street safe?
Is Mummy trying to be a fun sucker and be HURTFUL?
Is it Helpful or Hurtful to cause a drama because Mummy said its too late to start a new craft project?
Is it Helpful of Hurtful to lie about brushing your teeth or to sneakily throw your breakfast in the bin?
IS it Hurtful to roll your eyes behind Mummys back?
The list is endless, and works on so many levels and its working for us, right now. Dont get me wrong its not a golden ticket to calmer, easier parenting or calmer, easier children but it is a way of thinking that has long term benefits!
Parent guide books have a way of making me feel that what they say is gospel, and when it doesn’t work – I question; what is wrong with me or even what is wrong with my child? Neither which are helpful filters to see yourself or child through. Baby books full of what the baby should be doing? Routines that should be implemented…..which leave me feeling our baby is broken when they need a cuddle or extra booby time. How can one book, or one style fit every parent, family baby. We are a one size fits all. There isnt just one way to parent or think or be…..
All of this adds to the feeling of helplessness that my kids probably pick up on, and perhaps thats the reason they push and push because of inconsistencies in my approach as I scrabble for answers to fix this, help with that, cure them of answering back, telling fibs….WHEN ACTUALLY I KNOW THE ANSWER, that they need me to be helpful when they are having off days, that I must not use my parent power to make them feel small or silly – that I must show with every action, thought and word how to be helpful and not hurtful.
Again – I repeat, Im not perfect, I have not mastered any of these approaches  – and this isn’t a golden key but it certainly is food for thought.
So I bring it back to Helpful or Hurtful, ask them if their/your choice was Helpful or Hurtful? Ask them if they/you could ask it in a different manner? Ask how they/you may feel if our friends spoke in a hurtful of Helpful way .
Every choice we have can be filled with Love or Fear (Helpful or Hurtful) rather than impulsive or purely to have a reaction. I know its something that I have only just learnt after months of depression and CBT. If I respond in Anger/Fear to a situation it is more likely that the response will be unhelpful, where as if I respond with love, it all seems to flow better.
This doesn’t mean that we have to be saying “Yes” all day to every request or demand that comes our way, as answering yes in spite or under duress is not responding with love, its quite the opposite. But it does mean we have to slow down enough to give ourselves a chance to think about our words. If we cant do it – then how the hell can we guide our children to do it.
Today I challenge you to ask yourself is it Hurtful or Helpful in a range of situations, try it on the kids, or your husband child and see what they come up with.
