HI TUMBLAR. I'm Dana. I draw animals and mythical creatures (mostly capricorns and dragons). I like to reflect on lesser-known or dark aspects of nature, feelings of distress and despair, or creating designs that just look cool for the sake of looking cool. I have a sort of positive nihilist outlook on life, in that I'm rather upset with the general state of things but I still feel compelled to find or create beauty and interest anyway, even if my darker feelings sometimes come out through my work.

"Abandon Ambition" is both grimly serious and darkly humorous. I was raised in both a household and country that emphasized setting lofty goals of acquiring high earnings and impressive assets, but the timing of my pursuit of these things has laughably aligned with global financial crises, global pandemics and lockdowns, and now global heatwaves and global conflicts. Abandon ambition, and instead embrace what you want to say and do and create and build now; Tomorrow is not yours, and your goals may not be waiting for you there.

Be responsible, and be kind. But hope and wait for nothing.

So uh, yeah, I draw a lot of stuff and explore a lot of things that I think I've been holding back on for years for one reason or another. I want to draw dark goats, glowing bats, tempest capricorns, skinny dragons, snarling wolves. So here they are.

A lot of my designs find themselves on fun and/or practical merch! I like to create things that are high quality and have a long shelf life: I don't want to make something thinking it'll go in a landfill in a year, I want you wearing and enjoying my work for a very long time.

Pretty! If keeping your skull cozy isn't your thing, I've printed my art on fabric, too. I like this idea because if you move house a lot and/or can't afford custom frames, art printed on fabric can be displayed anywhere, and folds up nicely when packing up for your next move, without any breaking glass or anything.

A big part of my thinking when I'm designing products is also what do I myself use in my day-to-day life, and lately I've been desperately trying to cut my phone addiction by going back to pen-and-paper planners and books and things instead of using screens. And to keep track of where I am in my planners and books, I've made bookmarks!

I had so much fun designing these. You have something enjoyable to look at on both sides of the page it's clipped on. How fun is that?

Okay lastly, I make a TON of stickers. A lot of my designs translate really well into small, self-contained things like stickers, and I only ever print vinyl stickers, so they live a long time on your laptop or phone case or wherever you wanna put them.

The internet has become a pretty weird and honestly rather hostile place. I'm a solo act that's as indie as they get. So, it really does mean a lot to me when your eyeballs land on my stuff and you click that little heart or reblog icon, or even better when you add it to your cart and click check out. things will be restructuring soon:

I may do one more normal reply roundup after this, but then they will become shorter, more sporadic, and less thorough - just whatever catches my eye that I have something to say about, rather than systemically trawling the notes of every post since the last one

the reblob queue is still full up until mid-november, but when that runs out I will also be changing how that gets filled - organizational tags will stay but commentary will be less frequent, and I’ll just refill as I go instead of big days of concentrated effort which means you may get the same artist multiple days and it may just run out sometimes if no one’s posted in a while

I will be stopping the patreon requests and wallpapers after fulfillment for november signups - that means there will be patreon requests and a wallpaper that go up in december, but none after that. I may or may not sub in a $5 postcard tier at that time, for a little print in the mail of whichever drawing was my favorite that month, but that’s still a maybe. other than that the patreon will become more of a tip jar, if you just like tucking a little extra spending money in my pocket so I can order better food sometimes :v I’m pretty sure the favorites posts every couple months should continue though.

Thoughts on Marketing, Social Media, and Putting All Your Eggs in One Basket

With Twitter becoming a cesspool, tons of folks are jumping ship. When Space Karen took over, I lost about 100 followers in the first week due to account deactivations. That number continues to decrease each day. Even if I was willing to stay on Twitter, my target audience isn’t, making marketing on Twitter less effective every day.

Twitter is where I built my career. I connected with execs at Shudder, Tony Todd, @flanaganfilm, Patton Oswalt, Tananarive Due and more. Without Twitter, I wouldn’t have landed my TV/film manager, my agent, or my literary rep. I wouldn’t have raised money for my podcasts, NIGHTLIGHT and Afflicted. Sure, I could have found other ways--and will find other ways in the future--but suffice to say that Twitter is a big reason I am where I am today.

Saying goodbye to Twitter doesn’t make me sad, however. What makes me sad is to see what its become. What makes me sad is that, as a former professional marketer, I should have known not to put all my eggs in one basket. I am not sad to leave Twitter. I’m sad that something that was once pretty great is now so awful. I’m also incredibly tired of companies and their unethical business practices. Pretty soon, there won’t be many companies left to support. That’s just how things are now: you can’t spend your money pretty much anywhere without giving it to a grubby little shithead with an ego problem.

Now, I’m scrambling to diversify my marketing, but that’s really difficult when the most effective platforms are owned by corporations...usually run by shitty people. These days, it’s almost impossible for creatives to market ourselves without lining the pockets of some billionaire in the process, who will in turn use that money to do absolutely nothing positive for society.

For those of you who are wondering what the hell you should do going forward for your marketing, let me share my plan:

Diversify. Don’t rely on one platform. My plan is to create content on TikTok and share that on Instagram and Facebook. Some of that content will be stories, some of it will be memes and nonsense, and some of it will be horror-adjacent things like tarot readings. I’ll also be posting stories here on Tumblr instead of Twitter. Eventually, all my Twitter stories will be available here and on my website...

Which leads to my second point--have your own website. It’s the only thing you can truly own. No one can take it away from you. No one can tell who what you can and can’t post. Sure, if you’re a hateful asshole, your host can kick you off, but if you’re just a regular person, you can easily move your site to another host if your current host fails you.

Newsletters: I’m on the fence about this one. While I think they’re an excellent idea, I’m hesitant to try out Substack because Apartheid Clyde has apparently said he wants to buy the platform. If I do a newsletter, I’ll probably go with MailChimp, which has its own issues, but is probably my best option. I do need to do more research, however. All of my stories will be sent via newsletter before they’re available to the public if I choose to start a newsletter. However, newsletters are VERY difficult to do well. People don’t want to hear about your promos--they want stories, art, whatever it is you create. Which means..you’ve got to create even more free content.

Patreon: All of my stories will be published on Patreon before they go live anywhere else. I’ll also have some exclusive content for Patrons. Again, you’re relying on a platform someone else owns, but (so far) I’ve found Patreon to be less evil, and I don’t mind supporting them.

Finally, don’t forget offline marketing. Print out postcards for your podcast, book, art, etc and leave them places they won’t get trashed, but also where your target audience may hang out. The bulletin boards at coffee shops are great for podcasts because folks like to listen to stuff while they work in the shop. Wear your merch (don’t forget a website address or something else to let people know WHAT the merch is about and how they can get the thing you want to sell if they’re interested), and sell merch so others can promote for you!

So, yes, I’m sad that Twitter has become what it has, but I’m also thankful for the kick in the ass to push me to market the right way--across multiple mediums instead of relying on one, which creates a single point of failure.

THE BEAR AND BADGER

Wooof.. this build took waaaay longer than expected, especially for a 20x15 lot. At one point I was going to scrap it completely cause it just didn’t have the vibe I wanted, but then it just turned around on me and became this charming little pub! 

Cute and quaint on the outside, The Bear and Badger is a typical workman’s pub during the day and a local university hangout once classes are over. On the inside, it’s filled with curiosities from all over, old paintings line the worn walls from decades ago, and the owners have no intention of modernising the decor. Hey everybody! Finally promoting my Patreon, as well as a limited set of commissions - I won’t be taking commissions at all for a while after this event!

The Free Raffle:

Patreon:

If at least 5 people become $2+ patrons, everyone who joins during the event (even if it’s more than 5) will also recieve a custom-made postcard.

If at least 17 people become $2+ patrons (during or after the event), tier rewards will be updated so that $2 patrons can also make requests.

*It should be noted that buying a Patreon Tier with requests in it is less that you’re getting cheap art so much as you’re getting put on a waiting list for “free” art. Patreon requests will be treated with less urgency than commissions. I tend to be fairly quick with art, however the amount of time it takes depends on how many requests there are and how busy I am otherwise.

I reserve the right to deny requests that wouldn’t follow with my Commissions rules or would otherwise be something I’m uncomfortable with. (Although I would likely be okay with doing a picture with backgrounds for a patient patron tbh.)

Commissions:

I will be closing commissions after the event is over for an indeterminate amount of time. I will not be accepting Reference Sheet commissions during the event.

There is a maximum of 3 characters per commission. During the event, there won’t be any additional fees for extra characters.

Inked and Colored commissions are in a limited quantity. It’s first come, first served, I will not be saving slots for anybody.

IMPORTANT NEWS

Hello! This is a more personal post, but it’s related to the game and it’s extremely important, so please keep reading!

*Friendly reminder that Chapter 1 has been released and Chapter 2 is 58% completed!

Last month I graduated from uni, but in October I plan to continue my studies (it's when the new classes start!). During these months I wanted to find a job that would help me pay my studies, but since I'll be undergoing a surgery very soon, it has been a bit difficult.

That's why I thought I could spend these months working on this game! Obviously, as I mentioned, I also need a bit of economical support to be able to do it, that's why I thought of two alternatives:

Patreon: With Patreon, you would be able to support me each month. Rewards would be exclusive posts about the development and similar things. I discarded this because I would like everyone to be informed about the development, and I don't want to make people pay for that. It isn’t compatible with how I work, but if people prefer this option, then let me know!

Kickstarter: With Kickstarter, backers can contribute to help me reach the goal (helping me pay my studies so that I can work on it full time during these months). The game will still be free for everyone, you're not paying for the game. You're paying to support the development and for all the exclusive rewards! I think a Kickstarter is a good idea because backers can get exclusive merchandise of the game while I get economical support, allowing me to develop it a lot faster while supporting me. Some of the rewards would be:

Digital Artbook: It contains the art featured in the game and information about the development of the game, including beta designs, scrapped ideas,... Delivered as a PDF.

Sticker Sheet: Includes all the main characters of the game and some secondary characters.

Your name in the credits: Your name or nickname will be featured in the credits of each chapter.

Poster: A print of the game. Design to be determined.

Postcard prints: Postcards of different characters.

Beta Access: The possibility to help me beta test the game before the release of each chapter.

Luna+Neil charm: An acrylic charm of Luna and Neil.

Thank you letter: A handwritten letter written by me, with a cute doodle where I express my gratitude.

IMPORTANT: If we can't reach the goal, I WON'T cancel the game. I'll keep working on it as usual, only during the weekends! The game will be done, regardless of the outcome.

As you may already know, I develop games quite fast. If I was allowed to work on it full time, even if only for a few months, a huge amount of work would be done! The goal would be around 3000$ (the price of my studies). I’ll try to reduce it, but since I also need to consider the Kickstarter fees and the cost of the physical rewards, I don’t know if that will be possible. Also, a part will be used to cover other development costs (like the Steam fee) and make a donation to other team members and volunteers.

I’m insecure about this, since Midnight Train initial release didn’t do very well (compared to the demo of my previous project). But I'm extremely passionate about this project and I want to do everything I can to make it a reality, so I think I need to try it!

If you’re still reading, thank you! This is related to both my future and the game, so I really want to hear everyone's opinion about this matter! Do you think it's a good idea? Are you interested in the rewards? Would you like other rewards to be included (like buttons, standees,...)? Any opinion will be appreciated, since this is extremely important for me. What exactly is Patreon?

Patreon has a handy dandy about page you can find here for more info but what it is, is a site that creators can use to set up a way to get support monthly for patrons that pledge to their Patreon accounts. Usually with Patreon, creators set up benefits for their members that pledge that others wouldn’t be able to access which is the incentive to become a patron.

I have one and offer early access and exclusive fics (and eventually I will offer up early access to my original work) to patrons that support me monthly. The money really I use to help with medical bills and express lane bills so that I can have more time to write. The fics are gifts for supporting me.

But here’s a list of Patreon accounts that I’m personally a patron of currently (sometimes I have to drop some or switch with another patreon):

Lore Olympus: super popular webtoon I adore, by becoming a patron I get previews, access to N/S/F/W content, and exclusive wallpapers. There are other perks to explore as well.

toondoon1010: the Patreon account of @toondoon1010 and I am a patron of the Biscuit Tier which means every month I expect to receive goodies in the mail based on the theme of the month. It’s usually super cute stickers, a bookmark, and a postcard print. There are other perks like wallpapers, access to exclusive art and speed paint videos, access to exclusive zine pieces, high resolution images of posted art, and small bust commissions that are given on a turn basis.

Niechan: the creator of a sasusaku webtoon that I adore. There are many tiers but if you pledge to the $1 you get access to the webtoon’s N/S/F/W content and colored pages. She has another webtoon as well that she shows work of. Higher pledge tiers get access to wallpapers and high res PDFs

KBuggyk: the Patreon of @kbuggyk she offers early access to art pieces, access to WIPs, exclusive speedpaint videos and she is working on getting tutorials done. She sells merch and if you’re a patron usually you get to see what’s coming up before others do

Chunnyeol: an artist you can find on twitter and also as a contributor to so many wonderful zines, I pledge to their sticker club. There are different tier options depending on if you reside in Spain or not. Every month based on a theme patrons vote on, patrons of the sticker club get a sticker pack and a mini print. The art is so cute and so worth it if you love stickers. They also have a smaller tier to gain access to early demos and WIPs.

LOVESOUP: this might be my favorite Patreon I pledge to of them all. I am a patron of the Happy Mail Special tier which is one of the tiers that gives you physical items (there are digital reward tiers as well) and every month I get a merch item and bunch of goodies that the artist sends to me from Japan (tea bags and stationary and shrine postcards, etc).

There’s so many wonderful Patreons but I can’t pledge to them all but I do what I can to support creators I like. I hope this info suffices for an answer 😊

I made printable files and comics that are available for free for everyone. I love making free stuff & sometimes draw for free for organizations. So my patreon is a lot less attractive than some sending prints or exclusives. I do offer something exclusive. People on patreon can read my ebooks and have a free discount on my print shop. I can't offer my books for free even if I'd love to. . Today, I'm super scared. I no longer have news from a regular client, a big paid project ended and my internet activity is now the only I have beside a little project with a lil organization. I will never stop sharing comics online but like very often, I have to think again about what I can do. How I can turn all that into money, how can I gain more so I can keep eating cucumber & more ? I don't fucking know. My mental illness doesn't allow me to work normally, I gave up jobs because of that (even part time jobs). In some months I might not be able to pay myself that ridiculous salary I gain every month. . I hate myself for coming to this but should I start offering exclusive content for people ? How much are you ready to pay monthly to see 2 comics each week ? What exclusives would you like to see/have ? My comics a day early with the initial sketch ? A Wallpaper monthly ?
