A Time Capsule

I’ve been lurking across several fandoms spanning a decade now, since my days of reading “Bones” fanfics on fanfiction.net. Before any inkling of Ao3’s existence. Maybe longer, my memory is murky at times.

I’ve never made a splash in any fandom, so to speak. I’ve always been content to stand shrouded in anonymity, residing on the edges of fandom, never an active participant. Perfectly at peace to never have a voice. Never brave enough to want to be heard. It has only been in the last few years that I discovered Tumblr and felt comfortable enough in taking advantage of its anon feature to interact mostly with The 100/Bellarke crowd, “conversing” with one user in particular. In the instances I chose to speak, there was safety in knowing my words never had an identity attached. A safety that lent itself to sending anon asks a fairly common activity until I wrote one recently sharing a remnant of my “The 100” viewing experience. The warm response from the users who read it left me smiling for the rest of the day. Their reply took a direction I didn’t expect. They encouraged me to take credit for my words under my username, which of course, I didn’t have, not being a Tumblr user.

I was flattered by the response, bolstering me to continue the line of conversation with another ask and was met with reiterated sentiments.

In the wise words of one of those awesome people,

“I was the ultimate lurker for a long, long time. I had a Tumblr account for four years before I ever made a single post, and even then I had to be talked into it. And you know what? When I finally starting “talking,” it was so freeing! Even if no one else was listening, even if I was speaking into the void, I was no longer dependent on anyone else to share my thoughts and opinions. I could do that myself.”

I took the compliment but waived the advice. Tumblr is made of communities built upon sharing and I have always been unto myself an island. It goes against my shy, introverted nature to take part in a community. I have no business pretending I have a place there. None at all.

And yet, despite my misgivings, the idea wouldn’t leave me as I believed it would. I started to genuinely ponder the merits of creating a blog.

There are strong reasons to support the affirmative.

First, the utilitarian benefits. In the absence of a blog, I turned to alternative methods of archiving appealing posts. If by some miracle, the item count of my browser reading list hasn’t yet ascended to the thousands mark, it most assuredly rests in the hundreds. My camera roll queue has indubitably reached the thousands count, currently sitting pretty at 3,300. I shudder to think of the sheer number of my bookmarks. One hundred and eighty notes on my phone. The final frontier has been broken, at last, habitually inundating my laptop with screenshots. Long has it been overdue to clean house.

Second, I find writing to be a herculean undertaking I enjoy in the moments it doesn’t drive me to the brink. A slow-going process, but when I’m able to appreciate the fruits of my labor, marvel at the polished product, I often feel quite proud. Writing is a skill I’ve lost touch with over years of disuse but found incrementally returning while expressing my opinions via Tumblr asks. Like any skill, it can be honed with time and practice. Transferring my streams of consciousness onto written medium challenges me to think critically, ask myself if my POV genuinely holds true or falls apart, requiring further reflection. If nothing else, it’s a good way to process thoughts and emotions. I find it easier than and therefore preferable to oral communication. I am a perpetual editor, always amending my statements which can’t really be done as effectively in speech.

Third, if there was ever a time to join the Tumblr fandom I’ve found a home in for the last three years, why not in time for the show’s last ride? The night I signed up for Tumblr coincided the first day of “The 100” cast and crew filming their 100th and poetically final episode. Around the same space of time, we got a release date and the nostalgic goodbyes of a few cast members rolled in. I know when Bellarke crosses the last threshold, I’d want it plastered all over my dash and I’d be able to make it happen.

But where there are pros, the cons inevitably follow.

Do I really need a further distraction from my responsibilities, spending additional hours and expending more energy I should not spare online? The too easy potential for more hours behind a screen when prone to headaches and horrid habits of not regulating my eating and sleeping schedules? The answer is a clear and resounding “No.” Would maintaining a blog be harmful to my mental and emotional health? Remaining anonymous has historically done a fine job of insulating me from general rebuke, which has mitigated the risk of reproach at least. No corner of the internet can be designated as a safe space. I knew I would in all likelihood have to work diligently to curate and be responsible for my experience, leading me to doubt how the effort could possibly be worth it. How could it be worth feeling exposed, self-conscious? Constantly second-guessing myself, debating whether or not my thoughts are best kept within the privacy of my mind to avoid stepping on anyone’s toes? Combating the periodic skepticism that my thoughts possess value worth writing?

There was always the lingering possibility I was overthinking the decision to my detriment, as is my norm. After all, it seemed silly and dramatic to regard one obscure little blog in a sea of hundreds of millions of social media users as momentous. But I know myself better than that. It is a really fucking big deal for me.

I vacillated between both sides of the argument for days before deciding not to follow through with the venture.

And then one night, a single stray observation ran through my mind. One observation became another, became another and before I knew it, I had formed the grounds for an entire meta post. It didn’t end there. More ideas filtered through. I expanded on those ideas. More traction gained. Another meta formed. More jumping off previous points. Before long, I had mentally written the foundations for four metas. And I was so excited and proud of forming these connections to this puzzle without even trying that I wanted to share it. I sat down to write them in my trusty Notes, outlining, trying to jot the main points down before they fizzled away from memory. I saw how long-winded these spiels had gotten sans the full writeup, subsequently rationalizing…well, not blowing up someone’s inbox is just good manners, isn’t it? And terribly inefficient to boot. More to the point, it seemed a disservice to myself to censor my rumination to fit the small confines of a Tumblr ask box.

The part of me that wanted to push forward envisioned what the future of my blogging efforts may look like. That part knows that this blog is for me and only me. What makes me laugh, what makes me cry. Smile. Rage. Flail. Think. Whatever the hell I want. I get to say what I want, however, I want. It’s incredibly nerve-wracking. It’s also exciting, thrilling, and yes, freeing. The notion of carving out a tiny space for me to fill to the endless brim with whatever brings me joy makes me…really damn happy. It’s not an easy feat to accept and harder to retain. I should be ok, so long as I never forget that I get to be in control of what happens here. It’s within my right to block anyone I don’t want to engage or associate with. It’s my full right to not care what anyone else has to say if I don’t want to. Block out anything negative I don’t want to endure with only a few clicks. If I decide I want to walk away, permanently or otherwise, for any reason, it’s within my right to do that too. It’s comforting.

There was a time when I “knew” I would never sign up for an Ao3 account until one of my favorite authors withdrew the majority of her stories from public consumption. I “knew” I was never going to post commentary until I did. I “knew” my username would never be seen by anyone aside from me, never to be affiliated with my commentary until it was.

I did. Each and every time I thought I would never, I did. I broke my own barriers with patience and some courage. Maybe the most intimidating aspect of something new is simply the beginning. I said earlier that I’ve been an island for nearly as long as I can remember. It’s still true, I don’t expect overnight results. It’s probably going to be true for a long time. Perhaps forever. But maybe it’s all the more reason why I should take this step toward peeking out of my self-imposed shell. Do what scares you, or whatever it is they say.

I wish I could say it was enough to reverse my earlier verdict.

Nope, I had to agonize some more.

What can I say? Fear is a damn powerful inhibitor.

Lo and behold, as if the universe took pity on me, I got the chance to communicate directly with the same awesome lady whom I quoted above and she kindly offered some more merciful wisdom to a truly maddeningly indecisive individual:

“When you create a blog, you are STILL anonymous. You have a username, yes, but it doesn’t lead back to you unless you want it to. You still have your personal privacy. Tumblr isn’t Facebook. If you want to disclose personal information, you can, but you certainly don’t have to.

And second, your blog is for you, not for anyone else. It’s for you to express your own opinions. Or create gifs or other visuals. Or just repost what other people create. You can be on every day, or just once a week. It’s also a great way to save stuff you might want to look at again. And then… and then… when brilliance suddenly hits you, you have somewhere to let it hang out! 😁”

It was much I had already considered, but it helped immeasurably to have my reasoning reaffirmed from an external source I respect. I logged into Tumblr for the first time the very same night.

After much deliberation, an uncharacteristic burst of bravery and a grueling four hours I owe to technological ineptitude, I have, tentatively and cautiously, opted to give this Tumblr thing a go.

With luck, a day will never arrive when I dust this preamble off for a much-needed pep talk. Instead, it is my hope that one day, this memo-to-me will stand as proof that I don’t always need to be afraid of the unknown. Not all endeavors have to be as frightening as they may appear. And if I can apply this attitude to all else suppressing my personal growth, I might just be peachy someday.

Bearing this in mind…

Education & Democracy

Consider a ship. The ship is to undertake a journey - it has to sail through several oceans to reach a land far away. On its way, it will encounter difficult waters, storms even - it is guaranteed to be a difficult journey. Such a voyage requires a skilled captain. In order to determine who should command this ship, a committee of people is going to be established. These people will decide which person is best equipped for this task.

You are the first member of this committee, and you are assigned with the task of recruiting other people for this committee. Note that your task right now is not to choose the captain, but to simply assemble a group of people who will make that decision. Contemplate for a moment - on what basis should this committee be chosen?

The objective of this committee is to choose the best candidate for captain. To do this, we begin by defining a criteria to judge whether a person is a good fit for captain or not. There are, broadly speaking, two categories of concern here.

The first one is technical: what route does the captain plan to take, how does she plan on dealing with storms, etc. The other is not technical: the voyage is not simply about going from point A to point B, it is to ensure that the people onboard are safe and that there is peace and harmony on the ship. For this, we question: is the captain prudent? Is she wise and careful? Is she aggressive? Is she kind?

As average people, it is not possible for us to be experts in each technical aspect - however, in order to judge whether the captain is qualified, it is necessary for at least some of us to possess basic knowledge regarding the technical aspects of sailing.

Now that we’ve established the qualities that we seek in a captain, we can determine the qualities that our committee members must possess.

To judge whether someone has a certain quality, we must possess an understanding of that quality itself. We must understand the benefits of such a quality, and if we seek our captain to have this quality, it must be a good quality, and if it is a good quality, we must ourselves wish to have it. Hence, the people who select the captain must possess the same qualities that they seek in the captain. Our task then boils down to looking for people who possess a subset of the qualities that we wish for the captain to have. Note that if they possess all the qualities that the captain should have, then perhaps they should be captain themselves. Therefore, we restrict our search to people who are strictly less qualified than required for captaincy - they possess certain but not all qualities that are required to become captain.

The people who select the captain, therefore, must be a partial reflection of the captain: the committee must be comprised of people who possess the basics of the technical know-how in order to judge whether the applicant is qualified or not, and also, the values required to judge whether the applicant is the right person to lead and manage the voyage in its non-technical aspects.

The idea of democracy emerged in ancient Greece. The word comes from ‘demos’ - common people, and ‘kratos’ - strength. Democracy is a Greek concept, and interestingly, one of the strongest criticisms against democracy comes from the founding father of Greek philosophy, Socrates. The story above is simply an extension of the argument that Socrates offered - the ship is the society, the captain is the elected government and the committee of people are the voters.

In a democracy by birthright, each citizen that has attained 18 years of age is allowed to vote. That is to say, each citizen’s opinion is given equal weight in the democratic process. This is equivalent to allowing all the sailors on the boat to be a part of the committee that selects the captain - it is, naturally, ‘equal’, but logically, it guarantees an inefficiency in the outcome of the democratic process - it accounts for the opinion of those who do not possess the skills necessary to make an informed decision. In a highly literate society, this would be a small cost to bear - as long as the majority is capable of critical thinking, the outcome would be efficient, along with the positive side effect of creating a sense of equality amongst the citizens. However, we are not living in a highly ‘literate’ society. Statistically higher literacy rates have failed to account for the limitations of the education.

Education all over the world has been moving further and further away from humanities, closer to natural sciences. Particularly in this part of the world, the education system involves very little amount of compulsory education in philosophy or political science. As jobs in these fields are not economically rewarding, students too lack the incentives to take up these fields or study them. However, what this has created is a society of highly educated illiterates - we understand trigonometry but we do not understand how to reason outside the realm of numbers. Engineering is held in high regard, but political literacy, an education in reasoning, in morality and ethics, it is often dismissed as ‘unnecessary’ for the simple fact that these do not lend themselves very easily to jobs that the capitalist society can absorb. By the virtue of understanding calculus or the laws of motion, one is not naturally equipped to make better decisions. The tools necessary to calculate the trajectory of objects are not the same tools that can be used to differentiate between right and wrong, good and bad - the progress of society has been lopsided.

“Government of the people, by the people, for the people” - nearly every introduction to the idea of democracy is built around this quote by Abraham Lincoln. It successfully highlights the essence of a democratic institution: people. The people are essentially the engine of a democracy. They participate in the process by adopting different roles: as citizens, journalists, civil servants, political leaders, etc. A democracy works only when all of these perform their functions effectively. Essentially, people are the ground upon which the 4 pillars of a democracy stand.

Our goal, then, becomes to ensure that this ground is firm, that it is fertile, which is to say, to ensure that people are not just well trained but well educated. This is an uncommon belief, in the sense that nobody would rationally disagree with this statement but there are not many people who understand its implications as well as what it demands from us as human beings - it demands a process of constant education - of learning, unlearning and relearning.

The reluctance to devote time and energy to human sciences is a product of several things. The present job market is one of those factors - but then, we don’t do everything just for the sake of work. There is another factor, one that discourages people from moving beyond newspapers and TV and social media - it is the subjectivity.

Society and its functioning does not have a basis in science, at least not in the same sense as the science of the physical world - there are no exact rules that dictate how society works, or how society should work. There are different schools of thought, and each of these lead us on different paths - perhaps, then, there is no objective measure to navigate this space, to understand this world. This belief is only amplified by the environment - the primary source for information in these matters is the news channels, the newspapers. Information has increased, sensationalism has increased, and without being familiar with the fundamentals the govern the debate, we watch news anchors spit over each other, fact after fact, accusation after accusation. With no simple way to understand and to catch up, it seems, the act of being an informed citizen demands far too much these days - how can we be expected to follow the chain of thought and to verify the information being thrown at us, when all of it is happening so quickly? Most people resort to making their own judgements about this information, then, and here too, our judgement is affected by the limits of our knowledge - without a real ‘education’, not just training, but education, our judgement is simply a byproduct of our sentiments - perhaps, this news channel is reliable, or this anchor seems to make sense, or in the past, he has been correct, or his stance is popular. We employ shortcuts in thinking - heuristics - to arrive at what seems to be an approximately correct answer. However, it is far from correct.

Human sciences are subjective, there is no doubt to this - but how subjective? There is no rule, no method that works in every situation - but are there rules that work well in most situations? Is there a way of thinking that can guide us, generally at least, in processing information and understanding society? This is exactly the purpose behind studying history, political science, economics and philosophy. An education in these subjects is essential in developing an understanding of society and participating efficiently in it. People dismiss the study of history - it is true, I gain nothing from learning the exact date that Hitler came to power. However, that is not the true objective of studying history - it is to understand the world that existed before us, so that we can understand how we got here. It is to learn from the mistakes of the past, so that we are not doomed to repeat it. Philosophy, perhaps, receives the strongest criticism - outside academic spaces, it is considered to be a form of intellectual masturbation, with no meaning to be derived from it. Logic is a branch of philosophy that enables us to understand how to reason for ourselves, to determine the validity of a belief, an idea. It is through philosophy that we study ethics, that we learn about morality, the differentiation between right and wrong, good and bad - terms that we encounter every day in our lives, not only in the broader political domain but the personal one too. Yet, most of us receive nearly no formal education in philosophy, and our education in history is limited to learning dates and listing out, in a formulaic manner, the cause and effect of historical events - 8 points for 4 marks, 10 points for 5 marks. To compensate for the lack of critical thinking, some schools have introduced sessions for moral values - to teach kids what is right and what is wrong. Still, the vision is missing - society continues to evolve - the challenges our parents faced are radically different from the ones we face today. It is not enough to teach them what is right and what is wrong - what is necessary is to introduce them to a method through which they can determine this for themselves, for the countless challenges that they will face.

Democracy is flawed because its foundation is flawed: most people are not ‘educated’ in the true sense of being educated - they are highly trained to perform specific jobs. They work as engineers, doctors, businessmen, scientists, designers. The difference between training and education is subtle - but it counts, in every way. Our goal then, to be better people, to be better citizens, involves an education that does not end. It is a pursuit without a fixed answer, and as long as the answer keeps changing, we must keep learning.

Does Psychology Bring Happiness?

Does psychology bring me happiness? No, it doesn’t. While most other people try to buy their happiness, devote their lives to external (mystical) purposes or get involved in communities, or whatever else they do to achieve their sense of happiness, psychology can’t be taken away from me because it's in my head. This makes it stable.

Material possessions can be either lost or stolen-They therefore require security/protection (which causes both stress and additional costs-Unnecessary costs because security doesn't solve problems and protection is only ever necessary when a threat exists). External purposes can be proven false or to not exist, causing it to require willful ignorance and cognitive dissonance; Communities can easily shun people for whatever reason, because they’re irrational. Therefore, none of these are stable sources of happiness.

So, psychology is untouchable, yet, it doesn’t provide me happiness? That’s only because there are problems that can’t be solved because other people are refusing to make necessary social and economic changes, and no matter how loud I yell, or how many times I repeat myself-They still won’t budge. They will only resort to tactics or various fallacies in defense of their positions. I know to question people, but: 1. I'm the only one who does, and 2. They will only make excuses for themselves and walk away.

I am obligated to deal with problems caused by these people; Many don't even see them as problems.

What is happiness? There are a few components that I think happiness depends on: 1. Knowing who you are and being happy with it. This is the only possible happiness because only the person can lose self-esteem. This world being as hateful as it is, the skill to just either question or ignore insults [change if the insult is actually (unintentionally) accurate], is the security. 2. Having abundant access to life’s needs and indulging in the natural aspects of our being (relationships, education, experience, etc.).

Relationships are a grey area, for psychological reasons: Many adults are forced to either end a relationship or suffer it, because the partner is mentally ill. This means happiness can't exist within a relationship for many, because they're unable to find somebody who is rational; Somebody who is rational not under influence (their actual self). This doesn't mean relationships are not part of the equation of happiness, it only means human psychology prevents many from finding a healthy one.

If true love does exist, many people are indoctrinated, and are therefore not their true self; Which means such people would actually be somebody’s “soul mate”, but the indoctrination prevents such a relationship from either happening, or causes the relationship to break up.

I've heard that some people refuse to end the relationship for some reason, because their spouse is mentally ill and they either don’t want to be single or they got married and have kids. These people are only enabling their spouse, therefore, ending the relationship becomes their responsibility for this reason. If these people got married, well, the price they end up paying is the price for their error of getting married.

This world restricts and limits in the manner that we are all obligated to earn life’s needs. You’re criminal if you take without paying, you can only have what you can afford and you can’t have anything without money, or at least having worked for it. Relationships are no different, they can still exist, but, they aren't much fun without an income.

While psychology is how and why people think and behave, skilled people can help others achieve mental stability, if the problem is only an error in thinking. Psychology can’t be the source of happiness if they aren’t the ones who caused a particular problem and also can’t correct or change something to solve it-If they’re forced to deal with those problems while having no control over things.

Psychology needs to be in effect on a global scale, for it to enable and maintain a state of mental well being. It’s not about anybody in particular, but everybody. Jobs are the problem that I’m facing, something that holds me back from fully experiencing life without having one, the same goes with most other people. Ironically, having a job is also what holds most of us back from fully experiencing life. Jobs are therefore, a paradox.

To have a job is to sacrifice that percentage of the day, which can't be spent doing other things we want to do. To not have one, means to not have the money to do anything. This is the paradox.

I see employment as the problem, but most others don't, so, they think I have the problem and I'm the one who needs to change. Many others will complain, but, that's just a part of life to them.

In this world, with the social backwardness, which causes violence, hate, corruption, etc. a world of order, not balance, I need psychology for protection against all negatives-Those who are inept and seek to bring others down with them, or simply feel sorry for themselves but don’t seek self improvement. People who will only perpetuate the social decline, due to psychological weakness. Even positives-Those who are unrealistically optimistic about their own lives and future, while self-projecting their own views onto others.

These people preach their false contentment onto others. Completely and irresponsibly disregarding any issue(s) others are facing, telling them to cheer up, be happy and don’t worry, simply because they are happy. Or at least try to convince themselves and think they are. This world is not the way it is because people communicate and solve problems.

What I mean by “psychology against all negatives” is, I need to question everything and everybody who tries to bring me down or convince me to adhere to their antisocial and fascist worldview. I also need to understand why people have the mentalities they do. Many will give their side of the story about a problem in their lives, not realizing whomever they’re confiding in, doesn’t have everybody else’s side, so, they can’t know what’s actually going on-Many people are dishonest or are simply wrong.

I agree that worrying is useless because it doesn’t solve problems. However, I can look past that because other people cause many problems and believe in many falsehoods (jobs, the legal system, etc.) which everybody else is obligated to comply with and conform to, while nobody solves problems. They instead delegate such responsibilities onto other people and higher causes.

“It wasn’t meant to be”:

This is nonsense. If any opportunities are lost or relationships don't happen, it's because some obstacle prevented them. No greater cause is responsible, only conditions that we've created against ourselves and others, like jobs.

Given that the economy actually causes a strong interference with everybody’s life (I can’t say it dictates our life because people are able to interact), it does hold a lot back from people. People are denied relationships and opportunities because of financial complications, so, to tell anybody “it wasn’t meant to be.” when something either doesn’t happen or fails, is nonsense. The purpose of the economy is to produce for our own survival, not social management. The worship of money is a neurosis because it's purpose is only to purchase, it's never supposed to be valued over life.

Again, given that relationships are essentially maintained by money, maybe I don’t want one, maybe I'm wrong to want one (in economic terms, which is what relationships are actually based on). If I do ever meet somebody, great. If I never do, so be it. I was born into this monetary economy with no options [other than to starve (which others would fallaciously call an option) if I don’t want to work for a living], I can’t change it either, which means it’s a problem I didn’t cause, but, I also can’t solve.

I say that's fallacious because if nobody would ever choose to starve, they're only calling it an option to defend money/capitalism against others who challenge it.

Yes, relationships often end, and usually for the stupidest of reasons. Most relationships are marriages, which makes them difficult to end because certain third parties (divorce lawyers) have their hand in it. This unnecessarily adds hardship to the break-up process, which also intensifies the emotional aspect of it. Does this mean relationships are unstable? Not really. If adults were mature and responsible, they would discuss matters and be able to decide whether or not to end it, which would then be on good terms, if they do end it.

Confusing pleasure with happiness

I’ve already explained that material possessions are unstable because they can be either lost or stolen, they are also unstable because people tend to get bored with them, the pleasure isn’t always lifelong. That’s also it though, pleasure isn’t happiness, it’s sensual gratification. Happiness is mental well-being. Sex is the most pleasurable human experience known to us, and it’s completely natural. Sex isn’t happiness though, because that would mean people can never stop making love. The physical touch is obviously also pleasurable, not just the orgasm, but sex is only a factor, in the equation of a relationship. Relationships alone aren’t even a form of happiness, it’s only a factor of it.

The big picture:

I would say happiness consists of the true self, people who think for themselves because they agree with everything they do, for their own reasons and not what others have convinced them of. Possessing the critical thinking skills to debunk false information and bad opinions down. People who live how they want to, not try to fit in. Those who a psychologically strong enough to ignore peer pressure.

This doesn’t mean people are bad if they’re unable to. Many have the misfortunes of an insufficient upbringing (severe in many cases), which means their environment decides their fate. Many don’t have a chance, and they end up in the point of no return. Meaning, they’re mentally beyond any reasoning, so, it’s best to just wait until they’re gone.

This occurs because those who claim to be “skeptical freethinkers”, are anything but. Everybody who disagrees with anybody else-Who resorts to name calling, insults, ridicule and hate when those with bad ideologies ignore any kind of facts, are no better. Everybody should be questioning them instead. The solution really is the problem underneath.

I think many people are living the wrong idea of happiness-They've merely accepted the way the world is (the way things are), and are erroneously calling that happiness. It isn't so, because they're only accepting what little they have as they're being denied the rest in life.

It is true that once you hit senior year, you are no longer a small fish in a big pond. As a senior, you are a campus leader—it is your responsibility to show underclassmen the ropes. Four years of high school have made you an expert on all things in secondary education, but you may not know what to expect on that first day of senior year and yes, one of our interviewee, Mr. Joseph Paul Roxas, a Senior High School student from De La Salle University-Dasmariñas experienced a lot of dilemma during his Senior Year. Well, the pressure and the stress that he is encountering today doubled compared to other senior high students because he is also an athlete, a Volleyball player to be exact. According to him, the additional 2 years of K-12 is good for them and it is beneficial because, it can help them to be more prepared to the enter college years. He also said that it will help them to gain new knowledge in different things. But for him, there are also some disadvantages of being an athlete. He told us that there are a lot of tasks, homework to be passed and because of that he cannot longer play his sport, volleyball. During the last part of our interview, JP also shared to us that K-12 does not help him to develop his skills in terms of volleyball because according to him, their Physical Education in K-12 offers only the basic skills. Upon hearing this, we were surprised since we didn’t know until now that it’s only the basics being taught. Come to think of it though, maybe the reason is that these sports were already taught during the high school years and maybe they think that senior year should be more focused on career- development and academics but it is safe to say that students should really be the ones to adjust in situations and changes like this and that time management is a significant trait that a student should possess.

Life is a balance as most people believe. Most of the time balancing can be an easy, like putting fewer things on the bag the better. But sometimes the idea of putting more in the bag can bring great satisfaction when achieving it all. Another student-athlete, Earl Vergara, knew this but at the same time he knew that balancing it with his academic responsibilities could bring him a hard time. He is from the University of Perpetual Help-Jonelta senior high school basketball team and in his four years in the game, Earl Vergara plays a big role in the team. He also brought a lot of praise and respect to his school. During the interview we learned that, since his first year, it is really his choice to pursue his talent in basketball not only to satisfy himself but also to lessen the amount of his tuition fee but now that he is experiencing the new curriculum of the Department of Education called K to 12 program and it was hard for him to swallow the reality of an additional 2 years in high school. “Beneficial naman ang program na yun para sa mga student na di na tutuntong sa college at ang goal ay makapagtrabaho na agad” said Vergara when asked if he thinks that the program is beneficial. “Ang tanging sagot lang is you should know what to put at the top of your list. Prioritize academics above all. Hindi naman kailangan na nasa top 10, ang mahalaga ay yung alam mong may natututunan ka kasabay ng pag gawa mo ng kung ano yung gusto mo.” Hearing that first hand is a good thing to know from student athletes like him- prioritizing academics above all since as we all know, student athletes are sometimes being generalized as students who chooses sports over academics. However, by reason of him, we can see the bigger picture that there are indeed students who still know how to set and handle their priorities right. Also, we were amazed that passion really is an agent in pursuing your other goals in life. As for him, basketball helped him get discounts in his tuition. Showing that there will always be a way to achieve quality education no matter what the hindrance is. As other people would say, “If there’s a will, there’s a way”.

Education is possible regardless of the circumstance- that is what this student made us remember. She is Clarisse Banasihan, a consistent honor student from Tungtungin Putho Integrated National Highschool. “Nung una po, siyempre, parang ang inisip namin agad ay yung negative part na may two years na naman so parang inisip naming lahat na matagal pa pero nung inexplain kung ano talaga yung pinaka purpose ng K-12 naging panatag na naman tsaka okay na” Banasihan said when asked about her thoughts about the program’s implementation. “For cons po kasi don sa mga di naman nakakaangat angat, ang iniisip nila kasi nung nalaman nila, iniisip nila na gastos, gastos na naman pero nung pinaliwanag na yung 2 years na yun kahit wag na magcollege and ready ka na rin naman magtrabaho after non” she said when asked about the cons of the K-12 program. We also found out that her mother is the only one who provides for their family after her father who was a pedicab driver died about two years ago. She shared that she is really motivated to finish her studies but as she has mentioned earlier, because of financial problem, instead of choosing the academic track or strand Humanities and Social Sciences or HUMSS, she chose the strand General Academic Strand or GAS instead since it is cheaper in terms of expenses and it is for those who still can’t decide what particular strand to take. “Okay naman po kasi nakatulong po sa pagpili ko ng gusto ko talaga, madami lang po talagang activities na pinapagawa compared nung junior high po ako”. The first thing that came up to our minds upon hearing this is that requirements and deadlines are certainly what a student life is in a nutshell then again all of us should consider this as a stepping stone towards our goals in life.

Besides, all dreams whether whimsical or practical, realistic or idealistic are attainable nonetheless. The man takes off his cape and drapes it on the girl to prevent anyone from recognizing her heritage then guides her back to his tent. She did not resist that much because she lost all hope in escaping because resisting at this point will just prolong her inevitable fate. The scientist lets her in and explains that no harm will befall her if she accepted his help which he will try his best to secure a route for her to escape back into Ylisse. The woman did not believe him so he had to give a guarantee of his honest words, so he take out his precious item, a family heirloom–his family crest, and push it to her and tell her that she can keep this as a sign of his sincerity. She is surprised and puzzled of why would he go this far for her. He explains that his motives are purely scientific. He’d like to see her soul under these circumstances, what is going to evolve into? She stares at him for a whole minute before she starts to laugh. He finds her behavior odd and worth investigating but she then starts to cry which makes it even stranger. She tells him that he should not give away his treasure to someone he just met, not to mention is going to die soon but he stops her saying that he will see her; he will go to Ylisse to search for her once he is able. She blushes and holds the crest closer to her heart. She knows he probably did not mean it in any romantic way…strange she still thinks of love despite this kind of situation she is in.

Though, he holds her hand and tells her that he will find her to see her soul, if it was healed or not and whether he can help in any way after he finishes his research. He promises her that then goes to find a way to slip her off the border back to Ylisse. The plan works and he sees her disappearing into the horizon. After few months, he slips away from Plegia before the war grows madder and the Ylissean Exalt assault the kingdom. It takes him another two months before he locates her. He had to do everything in his power to not be recognized as Plegian. He spoke only ylissean tongue and changed clothes whenever he can to fit in till he found her. At first, she did not recognize him because his hair grow longer and he no longer looks like a plegian scholar but a simple traveler. He reassures her that it is him and time just did number on him. The woman cries again after hugging him and telling him that she waited for him to come every day. He meant so much to her despite not knowing anything about him except his name. He asks her whether she is willing to marry a madman who is in love with science and discovery to find her answer with a simple kiss to his lips which sealed their fate for years to come–together.

After their marriage, Sohrab’s mother was pregnant after a month of their commitment then for the next 8 months, his father was dying to secure everything possible for his wife in order to deliver the baby safely. The father started working as a teacher in the local school whilst the mother was a tailor. Having been tutored by his own father, it was a reason for why Sohrab admired Avatar. They were good at teaching which reminded the brunet of his own family. The parents did everything for the boy to learn what is wrong and right despite how bad the situation was.

The First Ylisse-Plegia war was a complete disaster for both nations. It ended with so much hatred and sorrow. Being a Plegian amongst Ylisseans, Sohrab’s father had to be twice careful of revealing his true identity. Fortunately, the village they were living in, had accepted him as a member of their society after a while. He’s only able to say that he is Plegian only inside that small population. Any other place, he is to be secretive.

This had an impact on the boy. He grows up to be sharp at a young age due to what was happening around him. He understood that if someone where to find out that he is a half, he is probably to be murdered on the spot. This fear subsided when Avatar came. Being a Plegian themselves, Avatar tried to explain for Sohrab that being one is not bad, it is one’s action, not their nationality. Sohrab was the only one to know of the Avatar’s true heritage. The parents feared that one day, the boy will be found and persuaded to join the Grimleal and their efforts to hide him away from this will go to waste which why they found some solace when Avatar came to teach the kids what they know, another perspective on life.

AVATAR’S ADVENT.

Years later, Sohrab was 14 when Avatar came to their village. They stayed for two years, teaching the kids in the village all sorts of knowledge they possess. What were the motives of Avatar coming to their village were kept secret from the villagers but they offered their services if they can stay in the village for a while.

As they came they went. They vanished without leaving any trace of where they have gone to, when they will be back or even a goodbye letter. Sohrab looks up to them as a source of inspiration so their disappearance made him sad, rather disappointed that they did not have the time to simply say goodbye at least. Sohrab was 16 by then.

During the time Avatar spent, Sohrab, possessed quite the knowledge thanks to them. true that he was not gifted with a critical thinking mind, but he was an eager student. He studied everything that Avatar throw his way, whether he fully understood it at that time or not, was not a problem. Avatar told him that a good first step to read and read, the application is important but in due time. Thus, Sohrab was not worried if he did not understand half of what the Avatar used to say because he knows by time and with enough experience, he will get it. The Alchemist learned nifty skills from Avatar like observation. Since Sohrab was a quiet kid, he could have detected things that most of the kids could not. Still, may not be as good as the Avatar, but he trained his eyes to spot things–any oddity, especially with human’s body language. It piqued his interest to be able to draw raw assumptions of someone’s character by simply observing their body language. So, he worked on that by reading more and observing.

Sohrab and the other kids who were studying under Avatar were saddened. Avatar could have said a proper goodbye but they did not. Some of them felt betrayed as Avatar promised to teach them all the cool things they knew and some with time forgotten about them. Sohrab cared for Avatar because for him, Avatar was someone close of a big sibling to him. Since he is an only child, it was certainly helping to have Avatar around him. For Sohrab, Avatar was a sibling, or a father figure (if Avatar was male) like since the two (Avatar and his father) are in a way teachers, source of inspiration and ambition, a source for a positive outlet, and their kindness and thoughtful nature especially when he was struggling with his identity, Avatar stood up with him. Plus, the amount of knowledge they have was something really to admire. He wished he could be like them but knowing how limited his abilities are, he simply kept dreaming of being a good dependable person like them. So, their disappearance was quite the shock for him.

However, his thirst for discovery from his father’s side urged him to out and explore the world. Of course, all to his mother’s chagrin but he promised her to stay safe as possible.

CURRENT ALCHEMIST.

Sohrab left his village at a young age after many days of his mother’s refusal saying that he is still young. Thankfully, a merchant in his village, Duncan promised to take good care of Sohrab if his mother agree. After the father spoke kind words to her about letting him go sooner than having to face it when he decides to sneak out because of her ‘overprotectiveness’ the mother then agree but making him promise to not leave Ylisse for Plegia at any cost or meet or interact with any Plegian,

The young alchemist leaves with the parents blessing of seeing the truth of his this world by his own eyes and experience and feel what books or words by mouth cannot express. Sohrab joins Duncan’s merchant group and travels with them wherever they go and when their roads differ, Sohrab would leave them and wander with another group of merchants or mercenary (did not matter to him) to explore the world. And whenever he would meet up with Duncan’s group, he would send letters and gifts back home.It was a rough journey but he enjoyed every bit of it. Even when he nearly died because of a high fever, he took it as a valuable experience and made sure to have proper precautions for the future. After 3 years of roaming around the country, he became pretty much knowledgeable of the terrains. He often becomes a guide for groups of merchants in exchange for traveling with them and information on any tidbits of information on this alchemy. To Sohrab’s shock, in his traveling, his mother got pregnant and gave birth to a little brother of his. As much as he wanted to come back and see his little brother, it was kind of impossible as he was tracing a lead on a book he got a tip about and leaving the traces to get cold was out of the question. He kind of hated his pragmatic thinking at sometimes but if he returned what could he do for his new little brother? He is still a baby to tell him about his adventures. Maybe the next year when he manages to track down that book he wanted. Naga only knows where this might lead him.

With time, he met people who had books about the old continent, more elaborated on certain aspects and he managed to salvage a bit here and a bit there about Alchemy. Even books that are half damaged, its contents are about a guy called Forneus. By the end of his third year, he was able to combine a sword to his body. It was a reckless attempted but it was a test of his abilities. As a starter, Sohrab could synthesize lesser things like a paper, quill, gradually to mix and forge small accessories like rings and pendant but he was not into creating these stuff. He was more of practical person so anything that is actually useful to use he would attempt to learn and create.

His first success was creating a healing salve that could not fully heal wounds but it was a grand thing for someone as Sohrab who learned everything by himself. His success rate gradually increased with every new item he synthesized perfectly. His next attempt was weapons because it was rather expensive to keep buying low standard swords which keeps breaking every now and then. The first successful weapon was a dagger. Weak and could not last after two uses but for a first try to manifest it, it was a great attempt. Then he gradually kept adding more materials trial and error until he found the best formula to synthesize a durable dagger, and even poisonous one. His next experiment was a sword. After another a couple of tries, he managed to materialize the sword in a stable state without losing its form. His next task was to link that sword he made with his body for easy summon to it rather than actually synthesize it in battle, he can simply summon it. Once he was able to link the sword to his left arm, his body at first did not react but then his body started to reject the sword and any material in his system. Sohrab had a severe fever that could have killed him if it weren’t for Duncan and the rest of the gang, taking him to a healer to cure him. After he recovered, he continued his experiments until his body accustomed to the sword presence in his left arm.

As for the materials, It was a hard process to gather material let alone knowing what sort of things would create the desired item. It was a trial and error kind of phase. He has his journal with every successful and failed experiment. It was his own legacy if someone, like him, attempted to learn Alchemy. The journal is a black leather, with snow-white papers. The cover is his family insignia and his name initials S.E. Of course, this journal was one of the successfully crafted items he attempted and to honor it, he wrote everything in it.

The first page reads the following:

All in all, Sohrab learned a lot on his journey, especially the ways of trade since he mostly traveled with merchants. To him, he values the item quality over money. If it is good, he might tempt to buy it even if it was expensive. Though, that does not mean he will not haggle his way to get what he wants with a good price. Notice: It does not mean he is a superb haggler, it is a trial and error experience for him as well.

Since Sohrab’s timeline is a parallel one to the one the game is in, there are similarities between the fate of the two lines. In the future of Sohrab’s world, Grima did indeed take over and Sohrab’s family were killed because their village is still close to Ylisstol thus was invaded by Risens when they swarmed the continent. The differences would be in the terrain for example new villages that he is not familiar of, man made rivers or any other thing.

A note to be taken, in game timeline, Sohrab is different from the main verse Sohrab because unlike the main Sohrab, his counterpart did not meet Avatar (if assuming that the most agreed on age for avatar is 17/18 ish, thus does not fit Sohrab’s story) therefore, he does not have that drive to go out of his village to explore.

Again, Avatars who are not over 20s will be treated as avatars from the parallel time he stumbled on when he passed the Outrealm gate exploring the land. If you wish to have your Avatar as Sohrab’s mentor, please let me know so I can arrange it as that or Sohrab will never treat anyone the same as the people he met in his own world. He might have met few people on his travel from the Shepherds but will NOT act the same he does with the actual Awakening timeline people. COMBAT SECTION.

Status:

As for combat, Sohrab was about average (and less at some aspects) in everything. He was not that good at sword or hand in hand combat, to be honest, he was not that interested in fighting at all, unlike the other boys of his age. He always valued a safer option which is to stay away from any fight as possible. Mind you, he knows enough to defend himself and that is just good for him.

Sohrab wished to be different, not settling with a sword, a bow, a lance or even a tome, he wanted to have something different from the rest. Perhaps due to his upbringing, he always felt the need to be unique than the others, or how the society treated him as being a unique creature–a half.

In all honesty, it baffled him how his origin confuses people. What a nationality has to do with loving someone and building a family together? He always felt their gaze on him, Their high expectations of him turning into an exceptional being, Though, this ‘exceptional being’ is a just mere human like them so a way to tick him off was the mention of his identity as half and how strange it is and whether it made him any different from the rest.

To continue on the combat talk, Sohrab looked for something of his to call, his own way of fighting. His efforts did not fruit until Avatar left. Out of frustration, Sohrab left the village and stayed till the evening wandering about until he came back to visit the room that Avatar was living in. The books that they had were left in the bookcase so he spent the evening looking at every book, every paper, every document that the Avatar had left. He did not know why they left so much. In his search, there were excerpts about the ancient continent–Valentia and its culture. A word stuck him unfamiliar–Alchemy. This ‘magic’ as he assumed, was used to craft things, namely the Gold Mark, a rare currency back in the day. It piqued his interest that there is less information about this “Alchemy” when it seems like an important thing.

From that day, and the search of what Alchemy is was Sohrab’s goal. Sohrab was 16 and he spent three years in searching for this Alchemy and mastering some of its basic skills. It was not easy but he had to leave the house, leave the village, leave this closed space to a broader one. In a way, he was following his passion like what his own father did. His research guided him to follow after his potential wife. Sohrab’s passion is to find more about Alchemy.

Moreover, to maintain a stable form of his sword(or any other weapon he links to his body), Sohrab has to provide nutrition especially if it gets broken or dull; by eating some of the material that he used to create it; thus why he carries a small pouch of grinded materials that he sprinkles on his food whenever he can. He dislikes someone seeing him do that so if he was in a vicinity of others he would either refrain or pick another place with fewer people.

Sohrab cannot link more than one weapon at his current abilities but as he levels up and grows he can add more weapons but that means more stress on his body and of course the intake of materials into his body will increase and this will definitely cause health problem like poisoning. He is also researching another way to replace the whole intaking the material in to be able to summon weapons.

Despite wanting to be different, he had to have a weapon at his disposal to fight when it’s needed and the only thing that will not strain his body when summoned is a sword for it does not require much material than a lance or an axe (& intake wise.) Sohrab knows how to fend himself but not much a master of the weapon and when someone tells him points out his flaws (e.g. posture, handle, moves,) he does not give that much thought to it because he still dislikes using it. A paradox.

His trump card in any fight is his quick on spot forged throwing poisoned daggers. He can create them fast and utilize them when needed. His weakness aside not being a strong or skilled fighter, his reservoir of material. If he was pushed into a long battle, this could lead to draining all his material that he carries with him for alchemy. Rendering him into a close combat again with either his sword or fist depend on the situation. However, being trained by Avatar, it will take more than a provoke or a taunt to get him into this situation because he will always value the option of running away.

Perhaps with good persuasion, Sohrab might consider training more but for now, he will remain as far as he can be from any training ground. To be honest, he is a bit scared of enabling himself more power, he will lose sight of his goal which is learning, not fighting, which is why he refuses to get any training. However, he won’t talk about this to anyone whilst becomes another weakness. He’ll simply brush it as not good with physical training.

Because of his lack of proper training, his stamina is not all that good. His moves can be a bit rusty at times but when push comes to the shove, he will force his body to overcome the limits he had set for himself.

A note to address, Sohrab can use any tome if he had enough time reading it because again his first class was Dark Mage, meaning he can use any tome that this class allows but he does not use tomes because he remembers Avatar using them with swords, thus his pride does not allow him to copy his master, especially he is a person values being unique (subconsciously that is) but if he was in a situation where he must use one to save himself or someone, he will surprise you.

APPEARANCE.

Sohrab stands tall 5’7, dark brown messy hair, green eyes that turn to golden when he is synthesizing or summoning his sword. his skin tone leans to a ylissean thus why he can pass as one with no trouble. He wears a black cape, brown undershirt, green pants, brown just below the knee boots. Honestly, he changes his clothes colors when he sees fit especially if he wants to blend around, thanks to Alchemy. Belts around his waist that holds the pouches that contain the materials he gathers. A hidden knife in his left boot in case he was cornered in a fight with no chance to use alchemy or his supply ran out.

PERSONALITY.

Sohrab is the guy who you can miss if he did not speak up. For him, he rather stays in the background because it is less of a hassle. This does not mean he is grumpy or a gloomy person, it’s just a way to observe and wait for the good chance to butt in. Being in the background allows him to perceive better than being in the forefront. It often leaves him perplexed to certain reactions, especially these oddballs (the extreme people or the overall weirdos.)

The Alchemist is honest, more like blunt when needed. Though, as any human, he often falls short to lie at some points. Sohrab is lazy who tends to skip training or any physical activity; not a big fan of moving when it is not necessary. He prefers to be in a quiet place to synthesis in peace.

Dabbling in magic and alchemy, it requires a certain degree of level-headedness to be able to craft and forge things. Sohrab can be calm but when someone pushes the right button he is certainly someone you do not want to anger. Sohrab can hold a grudge against someone but in the end, he will let it go because as he dislikes overtaxing his body, he dislikes overtaxing his mind over useless emotions such as grudge.
