started playing like a dragon ishin and i'm both really intrigued by the way the game is casting yakuza characters as historical analogues and deeply frustrated because i have a really hard time telling video game faces apart when they radically change their look like this

but that's not really here or there; i can look folks up online if i really need to. it'd be nice if the in-game character list included their mainline series names, though.

but i'm curious to see if my knowledge of these characters from the wider series feeds into this game. is yoshia toyo as ambiguous a father to sakamoto as kazama shintaro is to kiryu? what parallels if any is the game building between the loyalist party and the modern day yakuza?

December 6: seasonal starbucks [kinda]

“I wouldn’t call it a punishment,” Joshua’s voice drifts from behind the counter, easily heard despite the noise of the coffee grinder. “It’s more like— the consequences of my actions.”

After the most recent Reaper’s Game, the enigmatic Yoshia Kiryu had made a quiet reappearance behind the counter of WildKat cafe— as always, he refused to explain himself, but the equally-enigmatic cafe owner had called it “Joshua’s just desserts.”

You snort and set your mug down. “That’s the same thing, Josh. Even you can’t talk your way outta this one.”

“There is a difference!” He argues. Although his human form is still fairly petite, Joshua’s movements give away his inhumanity— he doesn’t blink as often as he should, and his eyes never stray from yours even as he perfectly flips switches on machines. He’s too perfect. Sometimes the coffee maker turns on before he can even touch it. “Now, enough of that— try this.”

He sets another mug in front of you, nudging your previous one aside. When you take a sip, your eyes flicker over the rim of the cup and towards his typical smug grin. As soon as the drink hits your tastebuds, you wince at the odd flavor that blossoms over your tongue. “What the hell did you put in this?”

Joshua rests his chin in his hands and bats his eyes at you. “I’m working on the holiday menu for Mr. H. What, is it not good?”

You stare into the mug, almost convinced that you can see flecks of something drifting between the latte foam. “That doesn’t answer the question, Joshua.”

He shrugs, his smile so fake and bright that you’re sure he’s sparkling. “So the fruitcake latte doesn’t go on the menu?”

so I finally got around to watching the TWEWY anime

I cannot believe, of all the things they nixed, that they got rid of the “I can’t forgive you, but I trust you” monologue.  

I mean, anime Josh absolutely didn't deserve the monologue, but its a shame either way

(I did enjoy Neku fully dropping the gun and reaching out a hand to Joshua, but the smile from him sort of threw the whole angst of the situation for me personally.  Like I get it 100%, but something about it lacked the desperation of the scene in game for me, idk how to explain it)

tbh it's my headcanon that when Joshua played the Game, Sanae was his partner. The whole time he was so obsessed with getting back to life, he forgot to take Sanae's into account, getting him erased in the process. after that, he fought tooth and nail to get to the composer, dodging Noise and Reapers, until finally he squares off against that composer. when he wins, the first thing he does is bring Sanae back to life as an Angel, which kind of forms their mutual determination for players to trust their partners.
