I'd like to start off by saying that I absolutely cackle every time History 4: Close to You comes up on this blog. YongJie is my favorite worst boy ever, and some of the comments on your blog about him should be enshrined in BL history: "How badly he yearns to be out of brother zone" is not only iconic, but something only History4 can produce.

I am a literal trashcan so I have also watched their cut multiple times, and I wanted to ask if you had also noticed something about YongJie's clothing throughout the series. Am I imagining things, or does he spent the first 2/3 of the series in only black and then start wearing sky blue once he and XingSi are together? His sweater in the last scene is sooo blue, and it always stood out to me because of how dark YongJie is in most of the series. There's a part in the diary reading where YongJie mentions XingSi's favorite color is blue/he gave a blue shirt to his boyfriend, so is it an intentional move to have YongJie change color schemes? (And if so, did YongJie just start buying blue shirts or did XingSi lowkey start gifting them to him)?

YES! 

Come to the trashy side, we have 

terrible tropes, 

hot Japanese men playing teenagers, 

all of Zee's gratuitously unbuttoned shirts, 

and most of the HIStory franchise.

And we are NOT ashamed.

Okay, maybe a little ashamed.

Honestly I hadn't noticed that about the H4 BUT I am not surprised at all.

Taiwan are very very smart and intentional about their wardrobe department. More so than any other BL country, including Korea. Korea treats wardrobe like set dressing, performance rather than a component of narrative. Which is fine, it leads to a very consistent and clean color palette (restful) which I enjoy, but it's not making any attempt at storytelling with clothing.

But Taiwan (and Mainland China too, actually) really does think a lot about wardrobe. Like Mark's outfits in Love Is Science? become increasingly distressed and unravelled until he starts to figure things out with Ouwen and then they get cleaner and tidier (still arty, but he is a hair dresser). It's very clever.

H4 is very thoughtful about its wardrobe, it has been since season 2. So I think you can assume it's intentional.

YongJie wears mostly black, then back and white, then more white, and finally color. XingSi wear color most of the time, blues and purples mainly. I think it's absolutely intentional that YongJie shifted looks. It being YongJie I bet he just stole them from his boyfriends closet because they smelled right, or something like that.
