In 2016, I heard many of my friends talk about a new anime centered around figure skating. I was eighteen years old, closeted, and I had never given figure skating a second thought. It just didn’t seem appealing to me. Well, after a couple weeks of having my tumblr page be flooded with clips from Yuri on Ice, I caved in and watched it. After all, you can only see butt-naked Victor so many times before finally saying “You know what? I guess I’ll give it a try”
And Oh My God. My life was never the same.
First off, the story that is woven in this anime is so beautifully hilarious. Like, you’re telling me, that this 27 year old living legend got swept off his feet by a drunk Japanese man and he dropped everything to go be his coach? At eighteen, it seemed ridiculous but now as an openly queer 26 year old, all I can say is: I GET IT. I would have been in Japan yesterday. I’m a writer that loves campy humor and this was not just my cup of tea, it was like ambrosia sent from the gods of olympus. I love it.
I also fell in love with figure skating. I’ve watched Worlds, the Grand Prix, Nationals, and both the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics through my TV screen. I was so into figure skating, I still remember when Nathan Chen said that it was really hard for him (a straight man) to compete a gay-dominated sport. (Yeah, no one wants to bring that up since he won his gold medal.) But my point is, Yuri on Ice means a lot to me. It always will. Thanks to YOI, I fell in love with figure skating and it’s thanks to that love that I have created my own little story centered around figure skating.
My story is called Why Lie Now?
Yes, it is a queer romance and yes, it is about figure skating, but it’s not Yuri on Ice. I cannot possibly ask you all to fill the void in your hearts with my story, but I implore you, that if you like queer romances, and you like figure skating, you just might really like this story too.
I am updating in parts but for the meantime, please check it out!

I was kinda ok with mappa announcment - like it was to be expected, I kinda stopped believing in this movie when it did not line with 2022 winter olympics and it was the perfect time for it to come out - but then I was flodded with so sad and disappointed fandom, with people who claimed YOI changed their lives and I got so sad and I only then hit me that...
I live surrounded with Yuri and Victor, my only fandom things are their nendoroids (and this stuff is so expensive (!!!!) and hard to get in Poland and it was even harder 7 years ago) and I also have 2 Victor drawings from my best friend on my wall. I also woke up at 5 am to watch new episodes before going to uni at 8.
so like yeah when I read people conffesions and feelings I broke down.
and now I am so so so so so so mad
and I cannot stop tears coming from my eyes

Impact of figure skating politics on post-canon Yuri!!! on Ice
So, even aside from the rampant doping, I think many people are familiar with how the politics within the sport of figure skating really suck -- whether that's in terms of how skating federations meddle with their athletes' careers in ways these athletes clearly don't want or don't even know about, the way regulatory bodies -- the International Skating Union (ISU), and its various Commissions -- can and do remain silent when it comes to speaking out on abuse or corruption, or the complete shit-show of bias within judging, sometimes on a ludicrously visible level.
After all, this is a sport where a judge that showed clear bias at the PyeongChang Olympics was not only invited back to judge at the Beijing Games, but was given the position of being the technical controller!
Sheer madness...
It makes sense why Yuri!!! on Ice didn't delve into this stuff in a 12 episode season b/c the reality is: it's a major bummer.
But I work in public policy and am a social justice researcher whose career focuses on institutional change. So I often find myself asking the question "what would cause institutions/people/movements -- especially with a lot of history and influence behind them -- to change for the better, whether by 'force' (public outcry, insider advocacy, etc.) or their own volition?" It's a question I started thinking about a lot almost as soon as I got into Yuri!!! on Ice a few years back, and specifically, thought about in a post-canon context.
Some of the politics-related questions that surfaced for me, included:
-When Viktor returns to skating, how would his federation (the FFKKR) choose to treat his absence? Would they, perhaps, "make an example" of him at the Rostelecom Cup, purposely underscoring his performances? Or, would they have "given up" on him, trying to focus all of their attention/resources on Yurio's obvious rising star potential?
-Further, would they (with tacit or explicit media support) take a negative stance regarding his and Yuuri's highly public relationship -- perceiving Viktor's romance as a "threat" to his ability to return to the field as strong and focused as before -- or would they choose to ignore it, altogether?
-How would Yurio's growth spurt (which is hinted at in canon) impact the FFKKR's treatment of Viktor if the former is no longer able to put out the kind of performance that he did at the Barcelona Grand Prix Final? Or if Georgi retires from the field?
-How would skaters that wish to skate independently of corrupt federations -- something that is currently not possible under the way the ISU is structured with 'member nations' -- navigate their careers, and what avenues would they have at their disposal to avoid burn-out from the shitstorm of pervasive corruption?
-How would politics affect our favorite characters at an event as globally visible as the PyeongChang Olympic Games, and in its aftermath? (I say this with the caveat that I generally write yoi fic w/ the premise that it took place during the first half of the 2016 skating season, though there is no way to pinpoint the actual season).
All of these questions kept circling about in my head, and I felt highly motivated to begin writing a multichapter, post-canon "future fic". Specifically, a fic that would tell the story of married Yuuri/Viktor at the 2022 Olympic Games, but jumping back in time at various points over the previous five years to showcase how a particular scandal -- other than doping -- at the 2018 PyeongChang Games has "followed them" throughout the years (and has deeply impacted the sport/our other favorite characters).
This fic turned into a series called "Gold's On The Inside, Elevated My Feet", which currently is at 293K total words, and is being updated 1-2 times per month.
I know a lot of people aren't into long, novel-length works, especially if they're WIPs, but if you, like me, are fascinated by some of the real-world issues that might impact Yuuri/Viktor/Yurio and others post-canon, I hope you'll consider checking my work out.
I've included a spoiler-free excerpt from Chapter 11 of part 1 of the series, below, that I feel hints at the politics while encapsulating the Viktuuri fluff, friendship antics, and overall supportive themes that I've tried to weave into my stories.
I hope it piques your interest and encourages you to check the series out, or my other Yuri!!! on Ice fics!

“First of all, how the hell would you have even managed to contact me from all the way over in the Kiss and Cry?” Phichit went on. “Did they imagine you had waved a wand to send a carrier pigeon flying through Gangneung Ice Arena to land directly on my head ? After which, it would peck an intimidating message in Morse code straight onto my scalp?”
Yuuri was now hiccuping giggles, and he was pleased to see that he’d begun to wipe a profuse quantity of tears from his cheeks.
When his best friend had told him that he wanted to hear all the nitty-gritty details of his International Court of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) hearing, Phichit had definitely had some misgivings; Yuuri and Viktor had flown to Lausanne for their own proceedings directly after the latter’s retirement party in Milan, and given what they’d told him about each brutally long-winded 4 hour session, he’d known fun things were not in store for him.
“But Yuuri without his glasses on can be very intimidating…very sexily intimdating,” Viktor said with a grin, prompting a playful slap on the arm from his fiance; thanks to Yuuri’s thirsty fans, the hashtag #Yuuri’sNearsightedSexySquintTally had become a staple on the competition circuit, and both he and Viktor had taken to alluding to the phrase as much as possible.
“Yes, I’m sure that’s exactly what permanent-frown-dude-arbitrator was referring to,” Yuuri responded, sarcastically, “my nefariously sexy squinting that so very clearly spelled out that Phichit better file a claim, or else.”
He and Viktor both laughed, and he shared a few more snippets from his hearing before conversation moved along to discussion around the other Olympics claimants’ hearings.
“Oh my god, just imagine Christophe during his,” Yuuri said, before giving Makkachin a kiss, right to the top of her fuzzy head.
The poodle was splayed out across both of her dog-dad’s laps, taking up much of the bench directly in front of the rink boards at Hasetsu’s Ice Castle. After their hearing, the couple had flown to St. Petersburg, spending just a few days there to get Makka and Meni and do a round of cursory packing. They’d then taken off for Japan where they planned to stay until mid-June, which was the beginning of the rainy season.
Even from afar, Phichit had been able to keep tabs on Yuuri thanks to Nishigori Yuuko. After thoroughly bonding with her at Viktor’s retirement party – after all, a willingness to drunkenly act out the unhinged plot of The King and the Skater 3: Because Time Loops Are A Thing tended to solidify people in Phichit’s mind as lifelong friends – she had been messaging him through Instagram as well as contributing heavily in the “Yuuri Support Squad” chat.
Soon enough, he’d be able to keep tabs on him in-person, as his own trip to Hasetsu was just three weeks away.
“He’d be all: ‘And then, my esteemed arbitrators, I got distracted from calculating Yuuri’s grade-of-execution, because my eyes were too busy lingering on his delectably muscled thighs as he came out of his triple-lutz, triple-toe combo’,” Viktor said, in a deliberately put-upon Swiss accent, while lasciviously licking his lips.
Phichit barked out a laugh while Yuuri grinned at him.
“Are you sure you aren’t just verbalizing the thoughts you wish you could have expressed during your hearing?” he asked his fiance.
Viktor gasped, theatrically, and clutched Meni even more closely to his chest before responding.
“I would never think such a thing! I’ve become an expert at admiring your beautiful thighs while simultaneously calculating your GOE,” he said, sounding proud. “As any good coach should be.”

Trick or treat? (For the ficwip game!)
We know from Yuri on Ice ep 12 that StĂŠphane Lambiel won silver at the Torino Olympics. Year not stated onscreen; in RL this was 2006. RL Lambiel also came in fourth in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
One of Victor's gold medals seen in ep 10 looks suspiciously like the ones handed out in 2006 in Torino.
We know from the Ice Adolescence preview trailer that ten years before the show, Victor participated in the Olympics in Paris.
Conclusion: StĂŠphane Lambiel won silver in Torino in 2010. Victor may have won gold in both 2006 and Torino, we're unlikely to know until we actually get Ice Adolescence, but he definitely won gold in at least one of the two.
(Evgeni Plushenko and Daisuke Takahashi, who took two of the 2010 medals in RL, probably don't exist in YOI; if Evan Lysacek does, then probably something about competing against Victor knocked him down to bronze or below. Christophe Giacometti may or may not have medaled at the 2010 or 2014 Olympics, but probably not both; the fact Victor remarked on sharing multiple Grand Prix Final, Europeans, and Worlds podiums with Chris tells me they have never shared multiple Olympics podiums and may never have shared the Olympics podium at all.)
And since 2006 Paris Olympics is far from the only example of YOI setting an event somewhere other than where the RL event that year was: in order to avoid having two significant-to-Yuuri competitions in Sochi, I can move the 2014 Olympics to wherever I like! Since one of the losing bids for the RL 2014 Olympics was Jaca, Spain, which lost partly because Spain was going to host only the mountain events in Jaca, with the ice events and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies in Zaragoza—the problem being that the bidding city has to host both those ceremonies—I have therefore switched Spain's 2014 bid from Jaca to Zaragoza.
(I'm on team "Yuuri came in like eighth in the 2014 Olympics". He therefore wanted to burn his Olympic team jacket out of shame, but Minako stole it before he could. It's stored either with the rest of his old costumes or with hers, possibly both on account of Minako stores the lot at her studio.)
(2018 and 2022 Olympics in YOIverse are definitely in Pyeongchang and Beijing, same as RL, though. We have official art showing Beijing, and though RL 2017 Four Continents was in the same venue as RL Pyeongchang Olympics figure skating and therefore could plausibly be what Seung-gil's coach was talking about, that venue is in Gangneung and the Olympics are by far the more important competition.)

I actually wanted to draw more for the yoi-olympics event, but gosh, I’m so exhausted... here’s a quick Yuuri for ‘medal ceremony’. Obviously the thick jackets for Japansese athletes are just as red as the medal band...

YOI Olympics Day 2: Being flirted with
“I lost my number may I have yours?”
“What?” Yuuri looked up confused, the two of them were on their flight to the Olympics now, It had been pretty quiet, Yuuri had been reading a book and he thought that Viktor had fallen asleep, but instead he was looking up at him from where his head was resting on his chest, a small mischievous grin on his face.
“You look familiar, I think I’ve seen you in my dreams”
“That’s terrible” Yuuri said but he couldn’t suppress a smile
“I’m not a fan of your last name, would you like to have mine?”
“First of all you wanted to take my last name when we were figuring that out, and second of all I do have your last name, remember when we decided to hyphenate?”
“You know you look a lot like my next husband”
“I’m your current and hopefully only husband Vitya” Yuuri said smiling as he kissed Viktors head.
“May I take a picture with you? I’d like to prove angels are real”
“Vitya!”

tell me about Viktor Nikiforov, Compulsive Planner !! :o
I'm so glad you asked about it, I LOVE this idea!!! I already answered it here, so I'm gonna freestyle and talk about another YOI WIP if that's okay with you? <3
Olympics Meet Cute! this is an idea that I started working on for @yoi-olympics challenge this year. altho what with the fact that the event was last minute + I was running it + also I was watching the Olympic figure skating all in real time if I could help it, I didn't end up posting any of this one. Still plan to though!
It's an idea that started with the prompt "Alternate Event AU" about a younger Yuuri and Viktor (probs about 20/22 ish) who meeting at the Olympics, which naturally is the start of a friendship/mutual crushes, and who knows where it goes. They're both still winter athletes, but they're in different sports. I should honestly write it tbh XD
(this is an answer from a WIP challenge ask game!)

My contribution for yoi olympics 2022!
It's (in theory) going to be a daily letter from Viktor to Yakov detailing the events and goings on for each day he is coaching at the Beijing Olympics.
So it is just starting, but will hopefully have 19 "chapters" total.
I will hopefully hit at least one of the prompts each day! Check out https://www.tumblr.com/blog/view/yoi-olympics for the prompts list! :) Or scroll down, I reblogged it. lol

Post-canon Viktuuri intimacy: my love of writing the most tender filth imaginable
I think I'll always love writing post-canon Viktuuri smut, because in my fluffy little head, Yuuri and Viktor have the most filthy yet tender sex imaginable. It's particularly fun to write about their kink life, imagining what a few years' experience of unraveling Viktor time and time again might do for Yuuri's confidence...
If you've read my work before, I imagine you know I love writing Dom Yuuri. The most recent chapter of my married Viktuuri 2018/2022 Olympic Games fic -- Chapter 17, meaning there are only 4 chapters left until the end of part 1! -- features a pretty lengthy sex scene, and given the heightened emotionality of this particular day (i.e. the one right before Yuuri's last ever competitive skate), it was really fun to write.
It also includes mention of one of my favorite headcanons in the overall 300K+ word fic series: that Yuuri is not only a talented athlete, but singer as well. In fact, since gaining confidence in his skating as well as his relationship with Viktor, it's long been a dream of his to skate to his own music one day in competition. He finally does so in his last ever competitive season, which culminates with the Bejing 2022 Olympic Games.
Below is an excerpt from this most recent chapter, which I hope piques your interest in checking out this story or my other YOI works (which are basically all explicit...lol, what can I say?).
Note: content warning for explicit sexual content, Dom/sub power exchange
Note of context: on this particular day, Viktor is in a feminine mindset. She came out as genderfluid post-retirement, and sometimes uses she/her/hers pronouns
Given Yuuri's impressive stamina, Viktor decided to help things along by beginning to twist her wrist and pulled off for a few seconds so that she could administer a few full strokes.
“I love making you feel good…that’s all I ever want to do,” she whispered, glad when her husband opened his eyes so that they were looking at one another. “You deserve it, you were so beautiful yesterday. And not only your skating, but your singing, too.”
Her eyes actually grew wet when she said the words, but she knew Yuuri would understand the sudden onslaught of emotion.
Viktor had been hearing ‘Gold’ all season long, but never in a million years would she have guessed that Yuuri had recorded a surprise version of it: one that featured his own lead vocals instead of Yukimi’s. Though her love had skated to the sound of his own voice before (at the 2018 World Championships, in a tribute during her last competition), this was the first instance in which Yuuri had skated to a song of his own creation.
It had long been a dream of his to do so, and Viktor hadn’t even really been able to pay attention to the first thirty seconds of Yuuri’s performance yesterday, what with the way she’d broken down, sobbing. Her uninhibited reaction had been the subject of quite a lot of memes, but she couldn’t bring herself to feel even the slightest bit embarrassed. She hadn’t even realized that she’d grabbed Phichit’s sweaty arm he had literally just come off of the ice after his own stellar performance – and had been grateful that he hadn’t minded when she’d begun to blubber all over him (then again, Phichit had cried a bit, too).
It spoke volumes about their relationship that even with the very wanton activities they were currently engaged in, a distinct softness entered Yuuri’s beautiful, gold-flecked and chestnut colored gaze.
“I could never have done it, if not for you watching me, Viten’ka,” he whispered, bringing his forehead slightly down to meet her own. “I’m so happy I got to surprise you like that.”
Viktor was proud that even as her vision grew blurry, she managed to keep up her ministrations. She giggled quietly at the sweet way her spouse kissed at some of the tears that spilled over, but the sudden heightened emotion receded, replaced with the earlier eroticism when she gave a particularly deft twist of her wrist.
“FUCK!”
She recomposed herself, bringing her mouth back down and attempting to fit the entirety of Yuuri’s dick inside. When it hit the back of her throat, she hummed, satisfied at the second loud thunk! that resounded.
“Ah! Vitya!!”
Viktor immediately pulled off with an unabashed slurping sound, but before Yuuri could protest, she sunk back down, taking his cock all the way to the back of her throat, yet again.
“Swallow around me, honey,” he ordered, the firm directive sending another heady pulse of fuzziness right to her brain.
She did so with enthusiasm, nearly losing her goddamn mind when her husband brought his hand up to her throat, lightly massaging it so that he could feel himself inside of her.

For Day 1 of the YOI Olympics - Beijing 2022 event. The prompt I chose for today was Qualifying/Getting Assigned.
Summary:  It took a few days for the news to truly sink in. Even after all the press conferences, even after the fittings for the team uniform, even after shooting the various photo shoots and commercials for sponsors in the immediate aftermath of the announcement, Yuuri hadn’t had the time to process the information. It really only hit him when the train pulled into the station at Hasetsu.
