As in warrior I, the action of flexion in the front hip and knee is eccentric in relationship to the pull of gravity. Unlike warrior I, however, the abductors of the front leg are working concentrically to abduct the hip—because the foot is on the ground, this action is proximal and has the effect of rotating the pelvis open to the side. In the back leg, simultaneous hip extension and abduction are challenging—the articulation of the pelvis and sacrum at the SI joint can take some of the pressure of these actions away from the ligaments and capsule of the hip joint.
Like warrior I, a wide variety of opinions exists about how much external rotation is needed in the back hip joint. The amount of rotation depends on a variety of factors and should arise from the action of the foot and whole leg, rather than being an isolated hip joint action. The more mobility there is in the SI joint and hip joint of the front leg, the less spinal rotation is needed to turn the chest to face the side.
If the chest is not clearly facing sideways, the spreading of the arms can put pressure on the brachial plexus (the web of nerves that extend into the arm), which travels from the side of the cervical spine under the clavicle and under the pectoralis minor. Keeping the arms in line with the sides of the torso helps to prevent this compression, which can result in sensations of numbness or tingling in the arms.

it seems like many of my students are working on #urdhvamukhapaschimattanasana right now, so i made this video. first, i can't emphasize how much setting up the posture is key. when you are in the upside down prepare position, firmly grasp the heels on the outside of the feet, gently tuck the toes under, and make sure your hips and abdomen are as high as possible. exhale deeply and tighten the lower bandhas. then, keep them engaged as you take a big inhale and roll through the toes to come up. it's important not to throw the weight of the head and legs forward to roll up but to use the strength of the bandhas (and if needed a little stretch through the toes). the moment you feel the weight shift onto the sit bones, straighten the lower back, pull the ribcage in, and open the chest until you achieve balance. next, exhale while folding, starting at the base of the spine and working sequentially upwards. (do not bring the head in before the chest, otherwise the back will round and you will fall backwards and have to start over.) while folding, you should feel the sensation of the body moving closer to the legs rather than the legs moving towards the body. once the spine folds in completely, lift the chin to touch your shins and gaze up at the toes. after 5 breaths, inhale straighten the arms, open the chest and look up before you release the heels to jump back. . . . #mysoreashtanga #brooklynyoga #practiceandalliscoming #yogachikitsa #yogaverydamnday @goodyoganyc

this video is for my students working on #pinchamayurasana. this pose has been my arch nemesis, so if i can do it, so can you. i still have a little too much curve in my back to make the asana ideal, but hey at least i am strong enough to actually hold the pose now. to exit (perhaps the hardest part of an already difficult pose), bend from the knees downward to gain momentum, then snap the legs back and straighten the body asap as the feet land behind you. the jump back literally travels backwards; this is important to keep in mind, especially when resetting the hands. to note: some people hop their hands into chaturanga; i prefer to slide them back because i find it less scary. this approach also helps me to save some necessary energy for what follows (i.e. karandavasana ☠️). p.s. bandhas, bandhas, bandhas! p.p.s. this is happening 18 months after breaking my right foot. all healed up sans surgery, just daily practice. yoga works, y'all. p.p.p.s. i am loving the loud chorus of singing birds that accompany practice thru these springtime days. 🌻 . . . #ashtangayoga #brooklynyoga #nadishodana #pinchamayurasana #practiceandalliscoming #yogaverydamnday (at goodyoga)
