i might be the only one who doesn’t get the popularity of pining!sam lol. sure yes jared improvised some scenes (wendigo, playthings) but i’d say it’s more about early seasons sam’s hero worshipping & pure devotion towards dean, while narratively it makes sense for dean to be the one violently pining and yearning (the siren episode, hello? the sexual subtext of it? and don’t get me started on dean’s constant unsubtle flirting with sam, the ass slapping etc). then also it should be taken into account that sam continued to run away from dean throughout the whole kripke era, i feel like most people in the fandom dismiss this core aspect of him, the fact that he’s not obsessive on dean’s level (the panic room, dean still being mad at him for going to college YEARS later, him getting angry over not being in sam’s happiest memories in 5.16) and personally i think it makes him more interesting. sam’s world doesn’t have to revolve around dean. actually it’s one of the reasons for their conflicts :)

i really like pining in general, but i see often the dynamic of poor sam pining for oblivious dean and i don't find that so appealing. i think pining sam goes hard on s3, something about running out of time, the desperation of trying to save dean. and maybe here dean would play oblivious just so they don't make it more complicated. s5 pining as well, he wants so bad for dean to forgive him, to be by his side, and here dean just pushes him away, i love it.

but i think pining dean goes harder, because the way sam's always slipping from his fingers? stanford, then his death, then dean's deal and death, then the demon blood, then lucifer. he pines so hard, and he loses control in every situation concerning sam, and the only way he knows how to respond to it is with anger. s4 and s5 pining with pissed off energy? it build and builds and when it explodes it's not pretty
