My Yumi Saito / Yandere Head Canons

(Or how I characterize her basically lol)

As a child, Yumi had very little control over her life.

Her parents fought a lot for reasons she was far too young at the time to understand, and because of this Yumi began to do things that could hopefully reduce / prevent any conflict between herself and her parents. She did well in school, took up classes on different kinds of skills, made "friends" to not stand out, kept up appearances while outside the house and dealt with her problems all by herself.

Things her parents couldn't use as reasons to fight.

She hates the feeling pain the most out of everything. A broken heart, a painful death, a betrayal. All things she wants to avoid at all costs. In her mind it's better to suppress the blistering fire burning within, to block the waters of sorrow from leaking out for the whole world to see, to not show weakness and vulnerability. It's better to feel in control of herself, than to feel anything at all.

Yet, it's guilt that she avoids the feeling of the most. The guilt of being the reason why her parents were never happy with each other, the guilt of being the reason why her mother went to jail because she didn't stop her in time, the guilt of having to carry her parents burdens on her shoulders, the guilt of not being good enough.

I see her having OCD and therefore growing up with tons of obsessions especially as a little kid that her peers probably did not like one bit. So hey, more forced repression on her end how fun. Some obsessions she had already moved on from, and some that she had let grow to a VERY HARMFUL degree. One of those obsessions is the fear of Yumi not being enough. Not being enough for love.

Her OCD is built on the fear of losing things. To her, Yumi believes love should be a prize to be won. The result of someone's hard work and gratuitous labors. She believes as long as she keeps doing what she can to get it, she eventually will. She will have him. Her mission to get his heart is akin to her "hobby" of obtaining animal hearts. Another hobby, another game, another goal to achieve, another prize to win.

She doesn't see Kai as a person that she genuinely adores, but a thing she wants to have. A thing she can use as something to force her desire for human connection, deranged delusions, and "love" on. She's not in love with him, she is obsessed with the idea of being in love. It's like the thrill of the hunt, yk?

Sure, she doesn't want him to get hurt still. Why do you think she never proclaimed her love for him out loud for the entire world to hear? As much as his obliviousness charms her to no end, it also annoys her. Senpai, needs someone to protect him. Someone who can give him everything he needs. To take care of him. To have him.

He just can't seem to take care of himself properly, can he? At least this way she can always have Senpai, right where she wants him. To love him. To protect him.

Thinking about Yumi’s life (and whatever’s inherently wrong with her):

Maybe she was always going to end up like this. Picking up the pieces that were long broken since she was a child, sticking them back together with trembling hands. It works for a little while, but something will knock over what she's built back up, and everything goes wrong again.

The only thing that keeps her going is the thought of having the boy of her dreams. The only reason this meaningless life of hers bursted with color. There's nothing special about him, yet she finds his mediocrity charming.

He's everything she's ever wanted– no, needed. How could she not love him?

It's exactly as her mom had told her. She misses her– why did she have to leave? It's not like she did anything wrong, after all, she had did what she had to for love. Is there anything greater than love? Doesn't it make all good? Why doesn't her father look at her the same anymore?

The burning hot feeling of jealousy that sets her entire body on fire is similar to the feeling of following closely behind him. Yumi doesn't understand, and she doesn't think she'll ever understand. A part of her hates that thought, because why wouldn't she know? She's smart, they always told her that. But some things are better left unknown, and her mind is far too occupied with getting rid of that burning feeling rather than dissecting it.

She kills someone for the first time in middle school. It's messy, bloody, and gruesome. She had invited her over to her house. But it wasn't supposed to go like this, that bitch just had to talk about what was hers. The feeling of victory is fleeting, and she stares at the corpse for god knows how long. Suddenly, everything is unfamiliar and uncomfortable and she just wants to be held again. Her father returns home and he sees her baby girl's hands stained with crimson, but it's not her blood. He embraces her, tells her she'll be okay, and that everything will be fine, and he'll take care of it. Yumi doesn't hug him back.

The vase remains cracked. Her father looks at her like it hurts him to see her like this. Like what? Yumi wants to ask. But he's already done so much for her, so she doesn't complain when he gives her a new name, and sends her away to live in an isolated mansion by herself.

Maybe she's the problem. Is there something wrong with her? Why doesn't she know how to fix it? Why doesn't anyone know how to fix her??

Design notes:

Evan: Ew. Ok, so he's supposed to be a wannabe professional musician, right? AND he's a member of a pop-rock band (?) (not too sure about the music genre), which made me realise that he dresses up like 2010s boy bands. I put my analysis goggles on and looked at Big Time Rush and OneDirection posters, LMAO. I used them as references for the textures of the articles of clothing and his pose.

I mostly tried to put my attention on his attitude and face because he's an expressive character, bursting with personality (which is why I know making an expression sheet of Evan would be hella fun). I drew many straight, spiky lines and curves because he emanates charm, coolness, and playfulness.

More Alijah, because I need to atone for never letting them out of my fanfiction drafts. Based on how I used correlate Alec to Little Red Riding Hood. Since it encapsulates his situation with Yumi well.

I tried to give it a 'crooked' look, but looking at it now it just makes the anatomy weird. And I couldn't figure out a background for the life of me.

Also there was a YHS week, and I missed it?!

I'm really bored so I thought I just might talk about Alijah

To those who know me, you already seen this coming lol. Now, why you may ask? well, as the self-proclaimed captain of the ship...uh I don't know. It just came to be in a dream.

jk, I think I first considered it way back when I first joined the yhs fandom. I tend to ship characters who I find pretty and since Elijah had a cool design, and Alec was my favorite character...well bam! new ship! But shipping these two came with multiple problems, cause one; I was the lone shipper at the time so if I wanted to see fanfics and fanart of them...I had to do it myself...which was eughhh... especially writing the fics cause I am not a writer! And two, they literally never met each other (technically) AND Elijah has around 3 minutes of screen time.

Bro, at the time, a lot of people were tolerating my shenanigans so I knew a lot of people didn't find interest in them until I started drawing them a lot. The key to getting your rarepair noticed and decently well-liked is posting everyone's favorite and then dragging them by the arm to start showing off your blorbos, cause if you post stuff that everyone likes--they'll follow you. When they do, they'll probably tolerate the ship since they're usually just there to see the stuff they like. (like a package deal!)

but besides all that, I think Alijah is pretty neat. there's not a lot about Elijah's character so I had to improvise and my version of his character is the guy who struggles to connect with people because of the lack of childhood he had. I think that it'd be very hard making friends if you grew up committing crimes so Elijah was a loner. (and since it's canon that he and Celeste were homeschooled, they're definitely loners. Not Celeste tho, she's an ambivert and functions better in social environments even if she's also quiet while Elijah just seems introverted.) 

So adding to his character, because of the life he grew up in, He's attached to his sister. He doesn't have that many aspirations in life so he just does what Celeste is doing and usually listens to her when she needs help. I picture him to be like a stray dog--trained, obedient but has no real place where he belongs so he just follows those who he likes. 

I think this is how Elijah and Alec get together in the first place but that was in my winter au, which I won't talk about since most of it is being used for my oc webtoon. However, in the remake version, Alec doesn't feel worthy enough to be with his friends and pursue his feelings for Funneh, so he forces himself to work more since in Alec's mind, he couldn't save himself so he might as well stop trying to have nice things. He ends up on a self-destructive path and now that he's spending more time at work, he gets to know more about Elijah. Their relationship is just co-workers at first, barely talking and there to get the job done, but since Alec is shown to be pretty talkative around his friends--I think he'd try to at least strike up a conversation out of awkwardness.

Eventually, Elijah would start talking too making their relationship less tense and more friendly. If they ever hang out it'll probably be because of a coincidence, like "Oh, hey! You're at this place too :O!" 

if one of them fell in love first, it'd be Elijah since I think it wouldn't be that hard to impress him since he's a loner. with the stray dog stuff, he gets more attached to Alec to the point he'd focus on him more than his sister and when it came to work, his motivations pointed to making sure Alec wasn't killed by Yumi (who at this point in this au was considering it since Celeste was trying to talk her into it--i'll explain this more when I ramble about celesdere.)

Alijah's Dynamic + overall story:

Speaking of their relationship, their overall dynamic wouldn't be healthy. Elijah's the attachment type and Alec's the avoidment type. (match made in heaven! *sarcastic*) Since Elijah didn't have the best childhood, his perception of love is warped. He believes that to love is to give them you're everything and to worship. He learned that from his sister since their parents were always fighting (like oh, they're not in love because they didn't put in the effort in the other person like Celeste was putting in her love for Yumi)

His love for Alec is more obsessive and he becomes more insecure. His goal is to keep Alec by his side since Alec is one of the few people who doesn't mistreat him (since Elijah did have relationships before but they were mostly abusive) With his insecurities, he becomes like Yumi in how he gets easily jealous. He doesn't want Alec hanging out with Funneh, let alone being with his old friends who were enemies of their little crime organizations and it gets to the point he'll imply he'll harm her (but he doesn't since Elijah knew that Alec wouldn't love him anymore so all he really does is cling and tries to get Alec to stay without harming those Alec cares about.)

Now, for Alec! SInce he was pushing himself away from his friends, he stayed with Elijah not because he liked him, but because he was there. he doesn't fully love him the way he loves Funneh. She was perfect in his eyes, He idealized her but when it comes to his coworker, he was a constant reminder of the mess he got himself into and Alec eventually regrets isolating himself since he realized that it's never too late to fix his mistakes and make it up to the people he hurt.

Alec saw Elijah as a convenience since Alec used him to feel better about himself. He needed assurances that he was doing the right thing, that the world didn't have a place for someone like him and it was better to drown with someone else than alone. Elijah was more like someone to comfort him, but since Alec was getting better mentally he didn't really need Elijah so if he tried to break things off Alec would find himself unable to because Elijah's possessive nature would reveal itself. Alec wanted to move on and live better but his boyfriend doesn't let him. 

His feelings for Elijah become complicated. He loved Elijah because Alec found comfort in not having to pretend to be someone he wasn't like he was with his friends and he loved that Elijah stayed knowing they were criminals but he later formed resentment when Alec didn't need him anymore.

While they were dating, as Alec got better he was making plans to betray Yumi and them. He wanted to turn himself in and wanted to take Yumi and the crew with him. However, with Elijah dating him, he hesitates since he still loves him (even if his feelings were shallow at first) Alec knew that if he betrayed them, he would be their or Elijah's target. (think of my Now or Never fic) 

since this is getting jumbled I'll try to figure out where I'm heading with this ramble lol

With Elijah's possessiveness and worship of Alec (giving everything to him like Celeste did with Yumi) he begins to see that something is off with Alec and after a little digging, he finds Alec's betrayal both to their work and relationship-wise because at this point with Alec wanting to get back to his old relationships, his decision to become friends with them again, becoming friends with Funneh again, this was betrayal to Elijah. to him, Alec left their life together to join someone else's. Elijah doesn't take it well because, to Elijah, he was the stray dog who was yet again abandoned. 

either Alec or Elijah would attempt to kill the other if Alec is confronted with his betrayal of Yumi or if Elijah is ordered to try and kill Alec by his sister or Yumi. 

Even if Alec was using Elijah, he still loved him. though his feelings were overridden by his resentment, he loved him. To him, it was shallow but near the end of their relationship, it became more hard to ignore especially when he reconnected with his friends. Think A Pearl by Mistski, he loved him but it wasn't a healthy type of love. it was more like infatuation with familiarity since Elijah was the one who saw the true him. no facade like he wore when he was with his friends.

depending on how evil I feel like being, Elijah will die and his death will become the pearl Alec would have afterward.

uh, I think that's the end of my ramble for Alijah lol, though just in case it needs to be said, I don't condone abusive/toxic relationships! I already got enough of them irl so I do not desire one irl! 

I find the appeal in toxic relationships when it's creating complexities in characters and how It affect their motivations and desires. I care more about their upbringing and escape of them instead of just liking them because of romanticization (which I hope is clear that I'm not doing or desire to do)

with all that out of the way, this is my interpretation of them! :D and only interpretation I believe since I don't think I saw another ramble or hc post about them.1

oh yeah, regarding my fics, they're usually stand-alones so Now or Never isn't canon in this ramble (since this ramble is the main foundation for the stuff I make) so some aus and fics are loosely based on this.

i love how the recent chapters talk about their life back in Canada. They’re new in a country and I know, first chapter they state not big of a difference literally, but they also mention they’re alone, only having each other in a different country. crying emoji.

‘they may act in conflicting ways that readers may side with one over the other.’ i’m a little scared as to what happen between these two beautiful sisters. i have an thought. funneh says it’s okay that alec is working for yumi because he has loan sharks at his door. but it’s my little thought.

that sentence reminds me of the ‘do you think we’ll be sisters in every universe’. SIGH. it’s so cute.

i think if i showed this to anyone who doesn’t know anything about YHS or krew, they’ll understand that the two are sisters! not some pair of best friends, SISTERS!

yhs juvie arc goes crazy

(they would all have drastically different degrees for the crimes they've committed: yumi & the squad would be at the top of this, obviously.)

(just imagine... funneh & gold & kyran being sent in for petty crimes, and meeting these literal criminals that are probably far too back gone. aka. “we’re the only normal people in this room.” they're not, though, they just be lying.)

(also funny imagining other characters like valerie, kai, evelyn, evan, prince (?!) somehow being sent to juvie. would all their crimes be as petty as others, how did they end up here, would their personalities be drastically different while being stuck in such a place. it's fun to think about.)

I've been rewatching YHS and remembered how crazy some of the earlier episodes are 😭 how are Funneh and Gold not in jail yet????

hey it's z anon!!! i've been away from my computer for the past couple of days so i couldn't reply right away BUT !!! v belated congrats on ur last day for didactic classes & exams!! i hope everything goes smoothly w the year of clinical practice and studying for boards!! i also got my grades back for the semester and did WAYYY better than i thought.. my semester gpa was 3.9 smthn which makes my cumulative 3.64 :D okie backkk to drama talk,, omg is there a reason you didn't watch s1 of yumi's cells?? i feel like it's kim goeun's best work..even above goblin 😅but yess please watch it for jinyoung.. his character is sooo sweet and i alr know a spoiler for how the webcomics played out so i'm looking forward to how the s2 will work! my other most anticipated is link!! like link, why her, and yumi's cells?!!? ahhh so exciting.. also have you been watching from now on showtime? i don't see many talking abt it and it's very underrated imo. clear communication btwn characters w great acting >>> and comedic plot while also being able to be serious ??? it's so good.. really. confession: i still didn't finish to my star 1... my friend lovesss it though so i should give it a second try... also THIS WEEK'S EPISODE OF PLUS AND MINUS.. I didn't watch s1 because I wasn't really into either of the actors (but ahn bo hyun and me don't vibe for whatever reason idk). I watched through all the gifs tho! so I know what went down and I've heard of the spoilers from the webtoon too. ohhh link! I want to watch that too, jingoo and gayoung look good together, I hope it delivers. I'm not watching now on showtime, I know at least eon of my moots is tho so I watch through her gifs. jin ki joo looks soooo cute in that drama tho, glad she's getting that. ahaha to my star I admit can be a bit slow for some people but they really were very cute together, their chemistry was very natural and comfortable. I feel like you can hate/dislike people (esp celebrities) for really no reason and as long as you're not being a public menace about it's all good. as for LAP the hatred was really uncalled for SMH and junyoung could've just stayed in Spain I didn't need her to come back and ruin all this wonderful progress we've taken so long to get through. ONE SPRING NIGHT the superior haein drama. they were the softest little family of three, all the other trash men in that drama could choke tho. As you could probably tell from the onslaught of gifs I made, episode six of KP really was something else!!! we finally got communication and it was delicious. I literally had no idea alchemy of souls existed until I saw luni's pretty caps of it on my dash. my music taste is random obscure indie-pop/k-pop/k-indie and then a little bit of this and that that spotify recommends me lmfao. I'll def check out your recs tho ❤︎ to pick a couple artists from my playlists: gaho, lucy, flor, vinyl theatre, the band camino, gentle bones.

Thinking about how Yumi and Alec handle their (very) similar situations differently (because of a certain post I just reblogged...):

i love u victims that dealt with their traumas differently and how said trauma had made u into who u are today. i love this thought. i shall write about it soon.... somehow.

Yumi HCs and how I don't like her backstory in canon lol

ohh we are back with those... Except I have too much time now.

So I talked about Yumi's gang and slightly touched upon Elijah's and Celeste's sibling dynamic, but Yumi?

I find her actual backstory to be kinda... Meh. I don't like how it's portrayed like being a yandere is like some weird genetic cursed thing.

So here's my take on her: Yumi, daughter of two parents who were a loving couple until she was born. I feel like she was never really loved (thinking about evelyn wang from EEAAO being born and her dad giving a side eye when he knew his child was a girl) and they had the vibes of "we would've been happier if you weren't there btw"

But then she realises that she gets a lot of affection and attention from them whenever she did well at school, or made something that was deemed as admirable to them. So she unconsciously learns that love is something you have to earn (hence Yumi doing so much just to get the guy) and not something that is given freely, without rules, without expectations. Which is why she's running for someone who doesn't even seem to care about her that way. Someone who doesn't have feelings for her, so she feels the need to win them over.

Another thing; I feel like Yumi's depiction of love is so... superficial. Almost childish. And to me it feels like she used to read stories and watch movies from the 60s about LOVE and AFFECTION AND ROMANTIC GESTURES as a kid. Since love is something she never got as a child, that's her only exposure to this kind of theme.

Making both Alec's and Yumi's parents withdrawn from their child is so interesting to me because they dealt this emotional trauma/abuse EXTREMELY differently. I deffo think Yumi's parents would also take turns in buying milk.

Alec would feel responsible for Aly and having to do everything on his own; I already talked about this fr fr but YUMI on the other hand RESENTS HER PARENTS SOO MUCH ONCE SHE GOT OLDER. Talking about this whole parent-child relationship really makes me think that OF COURSE parents have an important role in a child's growth!! And these two are good for deep dives tbh.
