Im just gonna say it: the exact same argument about series 11 having a woman playing the Doctor but w/ inconsistent politic & fake activism applies to series 14 & a lil of RTD2 in general but in Black. Respectability politics & flimsy anti racism all over the shop

It thinks futuristic racism corrects racism "being a thing of the past" but then actively erases said racism of Britain's past. Twice. Not only that but it glorifies the 60s & regency period. Does "powerful" white supremacy commentary then slaps a regency wig on 15's head 😭

It should go without saying that 1960s & 1800s Britain wasnt some post racial utopia. The show would rather make these periods more progressive than they really were instead of telling the stories of the POC living there or hell, show us history outside of 'the West'

It treats the dehumanisation of Black people as an inevitable part of future society. Fifteen has to be a perfect non violent victim of racism but can fridge the goblin king & the chuldur easy. Racism can/must exist but fighting back or having any reaction to ur oppressor can't.

The gag is RTD understands racial oppression when it affects *him* tho. The oppression of the Welsh is acknowledged in present day Earth bc it's a real part of history. Its addressed again in 2046 bc it's still relevent in the future. & did Ruby save Roger? No she got him gone!

It sanitises its own history. The Doctor has called out racial supremacy, human or not since day. And no they didn't always save *everyone*. Against the establishment to begging it & partying with it too apparently. Rosa has issues but at least it was hopeful...

It treats Fifteen as a white character made Black which has weird implications for a non human being from a "post racial" society. Thirteen wasn't a "human woman" but she still had the agency to call out every misogynist she met. Lawd forbid she cried over Jack Robertson 😭

Despite having a Black Doctor they're written for a white audience. 'It's not about Black people, its about white people' sealed the deal. It treats their Blackness as circumstantial & not something they'll have to deal with regardless of time period playing it safe & palatable

This 1 should be self explanatory. If Donna's seen the Doctor's mind then she knows Fugitive Doctor exists so yes the Doctor comes in a range of different colours 🤪🤪 And again if he's not a human Black man but an alien then why is it a surprise that he can change race? Ugh...

Isaac Newton wasn't that deep bc he's only there for the mavity gag but it opened a fuck ton of racism towards Nathaniel Curtis & antiblackness bc the racists camping the tag thought he was Black. 'Owning the right 🤪' at the expense of POC in the show & fandom. Great job there..

Carla's not as egregious as the previous but apart from RTD copying & posting her name from Clyde's mum in SJA, she doesn't get a lot to do outside supporting Ruby's storyline. S14 then ends with Ruby calling her bio mum her "real" mum so her serving role didn't mean much anyway

The Giggle was the 1st flag bc it conflated all political related anger as bad bc it's anger instead of love 😫✊🏻without *single* look at why the current political climate is the way that it is. Pandemic, genocides, climate change & govt corruption yh ppl will be angry Russell 🥴

Series 11 at least gets to gas itself up for having women write for the 1st female Doctor and having Black and South Asian writers for the first time in the show's history (which isn't a great achievement but ah well)

Tl;Dr - We have the 1st Black Doctor in the main lineup but this series handles race and racism poorly. There's barely any improvement from how race was handled in RTD1 and his handling of Black characters in Years & Years and It's a Sin hasn't been brought over. 🥴

i contemplated not posting this, but I know there's only so many other blogs that'd do so.

I am disgusted and appalled by the behavior shown in these screenshots. It is incredibly frustrating to see yet another individual come out of that sphere of people and be horrid. I was already familiar with the depravity of Yuki, and the quiet allegations posed against them.

I do not have my own experience along the same lines (much less with a creator) but I do believe that bringing some of this information to enforcement might be for the best. I understand that this is easier said than done, due to either online anonymity, family, etc., and as such respect and understand the lack of involvement with law enforcement.

I'm so fucking sorry to any of the people who had been affected by Ellen, and I hope that you guys can find some sense of closure from this. Out of my own experience with his lack of maturity and inability to reasonably approach these matters, I would like to say to any of the parties involved that I would not recommend bringing this to Sam.

While I am not saying he would support these actions, I am willing to assume he likely would not care, nor is there any responsibility he could really claim, outside of giving Ellen (and Yuki) the means to start a platform.

really fucking shitty way to end the night. fuck Ellen, Yuki, and Sam How I will go forward with YHS: I have taken a break from posting about Ellen, as both he and Yuki truly do not deserve any sort of positive affirmations regarding their past work. While I'm not sure how long this break will proceed for, any further communications involving their fictionalized characters will likely be altered, and I'll likely change aspects of their characters.

I'm not the most active or frequent when it comes to commentary and fan content involving YHS, due to quite obvious reasons. However, it's still something in the back of my brain and something I don't intend on straying far from with my fan creations. For better or worse, it shaped a part of me. Quite frankly, in ways it never should've.

EDIT: I did not feel satisfied with this my original posts as my thoughts were generally disorganized due to the fact I was beginning finales at the time this situation was brought forward to me. I also broke it up into how I will be going forward with their characters, and my message to anyone involved as I do not want to make this about me. It is not. It's about the gross behavior displayed, and I hope that everyone involved in these situations are able to move forward.

Not Ok MV Analysis

When Not Ok dropped, I was floored. It’s so good!!! So, as one does, I watched MV again and again too. At about the third time around, I began to realize that each of the member’s scenes are connected to the original Fever Diaries. So without further ado, here’s my analysis;

Hongjoong is stuck watching a screen, and the words he sees, (missing, alone, loneliness, behind, family, mother) connect back to his original dream; to become famous, like the people on tv, so his family would notice him. So he would no longer be alone. That’s his ‘trauma’. And in the end, the only way for him to break free is to destroy the phone.

You could argue his scenes are commentary on our modern reality, addiction, the horrors of constant media consumption, etc… and they are somewhat, but even more than that it’s about how the ideals of media effected his dreams. His addiction wasn’t the phone itself, but the unrealistic ideal of who to be. The idea that a perfect family exists, or that people are never lonely. That becoming perfect would change anything. At the end of the song most of them are able to break free of their ‘trauma’, and HJ does it by destroying what originally set him on his path.

I think for Hongjoong, freedom is realizing he doesn’t need to be that false ideal to have what he wants. That not everyone is perfect, and that if he doesn’t want to be alone, he needs to run for it in real life, not in some imaginary one.

Yunho sees his brother, flickering, glitching, and eventually disappearing. They’re in a theater, possibly like his brother might have once performed at. We don’t know too much about his brother from the diaries except that he liked playing music, and had a messed up leg, but I think it’s plausible that he would’ve performed at local theaters. As for why Yunho sees him…I think it’s supposed to represent his obsession. The theater itself represents his mind, how he’s constantly searching for traces of his brother.

In the Fever diaries, Yunho blames himself for his brother being in a coma, so much so that he starts following his brother’s dream; music. Then of course, through music, he met the guys and started traveling through time. It seemed like he’d moved on somewhat. Yet, in World Diaries when he met his brother in the past, he refused to leave him. In the end, when he chose to find the members again, his brother got hurt in the collateral. Possibly even killed this time. (Something possibly supported by the flies on the clothes in the MV.) So it’s safe to say that his guilt and fear are still fresh as ever.

(Yes this is a screenshot from YH’s scene. It’s what convinced me that it’s his brother) Overwhelmed with that guilt, Yunho’s been following his brother’s dream, this whole time. This whole time. It makes me think that maybe his brother disappearing at the end, in the same way the other break free from their shackles, is him gaining freedom. In the end, to live free, he needs to break out of his brother’s dream and live his own. No matter how much he loves his brother, to truly achieve something great, it needs to be his own will.

Seonghwa and Yeosang are in the same room, because their original ‘trauma’ was the same. Both of them were trapped due to rules and schedules. Yeosang was trapped in a ‘perfect’ life by an external force, his father, whereas Seonghwa was trapped in the same life, but by his own mind.

Both of them are playing Go, under heavy surveillance. Both of them have heavy, expensive looking watches on, that are constantly flashing with the words: obey, money, do work, fame, success, wake up, control. Those watches are their ‘shackles’ the constant goals, reminders, timers. You could think of it like a smart watch, literally giving reminders, but I think it’s supposed to be a literal watch. Time is counting down, but they only think of it as things they have to do, not as something mutable. Numbers, letters, strategies. Life is a game to be won, not a journey to be enjoyed.

Yeosang is the first to wake up, but there’s nothing he can do about it. He’s in a cage, and can’t escape on his own. (Interesting to me, because he saves the members in the diaries, but he cant save himself.) In the world diaries, when he fully breaks away from his father’s thinking, he attributes it to being with the others. It’s a change that happened in his own mind, but he needed someone to show him there was hope. He couldn’t do it alone. In the MV it’s the same. He wants to break free, but can’t alone. This is the play that triggered YS to wake up. vv

I think it’s significant for a handful of reasons. First, he’s losing, something that shouldn’t happen in his ‘perfect’ world. Second, his piece is fully boxed in (which is overkill). It’s caged, just like him. Third, and most interesting to me, is that the four Xs around a piece in Go are called liberties. So he’s quite literally had his liberties taken.

Seonghwa only wakes up when he sees the clock. In the diaries, SH woke up when he saw the girl dancing, it was a trigger for him to change how he was living. Unlike YS, no one was forcing SH to live perfectly. All the rules and schedules he followed like a religion, he made up himself. For him, deciding to change his life was completely internal, triggered by something anyone could’ve experienced. It’s the same in the MV. Seonghwa wakes up easily, but only after seeing the clock. Realizing that his life is ticking down to nothing, without him ever really living.

After waking up, Seonghwa is able to remove his watch easily. Proof that he had it on of his own volition. Then once free, he's able to free Yeosang who can’t escape on his own.

As for Wooyoung and Mingi, they are both in the same room, yet alone. Their fears were also both incredibly similar, their fears were other people. At first you would think they would be together in the room, but part of what made their fear so strong was being alone. So they’re together, but separate. When the two of them are first shown, they’re both on a little stage surrounded by masked figures. At first I didn’t realize the significance of the scene, but then I realized; The figures are facing different directions. On Wooyoung’s side the figures face him, while on Mingi’s side they face away from him. This little detail characterizes their fears well; Wooyoung is afraid of people’s stares, while Mingi hates being alone.

Wooyoung’s struggle, as characterized in the Fever diaries, is stage fright. While his screen time doesn’t seem very significant at first, it’s clear he’s afraid. The masked figures are looking at him. He surrounded, trapped on stage a tiny stage and they’re laughing (???) at him. I think people who struggle with stage fright and public speaking would agree that it’s a terrifying predicament. At the end of the MV he manages to break free by performing anyway, even with his fear. And he blows them all away.

Another thing I thought was interesting was the short but intense zoom on his necklace. Shots like this wouldn’t happen unless they were 100% on purpose. (Because it’s weird ToT) In his first Diary, WY says that his fear was like a “chain that was tying my body”. So the chain necklace could represent part of his fear. It’s collaring him in the same way the watches shackled YS and SH for their scenes.

Mingi loved music, but as escapism. He was lonely and used music as a way to hide from how he actually felt. His ‘trauma’. In the beginning, there are a good handful of shots of him standing alone on a stage. Sometimes there are men in black like Wooyoung have, but most of the time they’re either facing away from him, or flickering like they’re not really there. That’s his ‘trauma’; being alone.

His scenes were the hardest for me to analyze out of all the members. Yet they’re what also made me realize that Not Ok is connected to Fever Diaries. This shot of him putting in his earbuds is the reason I was even able to write this analysis. vv

It parallels his scenes in Diary Film so perfectly that it made me go back and reevaluate the whole MV from a Fever perspective.

To be honest, Mingi’s scenes stumped me for quite some time. Like weeks and weeks kinda time. After all that time thinking, I’ve come to the conclusion that the MV is supposed to show him coming to love music more for what it is than for the ability to hide in it. At some point he begins to use music as a way to connect with people as opposed to a way to push them away. (Like how the guys in black join him to dance.) For Mingi music is an unhealthy coping mechanism, but it’s also the path he chose for himself. If used the right way, it can give him strength to keep going and the ability to relate to others. He hasn’t won his inner battle yet, but he’s definitely getting closer.

San is running, (something he seems to be doing every single comeback). I think his running is supposed to be yet another callback to the og Fever Diary Film where he’s being forced to move again, and as he’s going down the escalator he changes his mind and runs back to the warehouse. Back to his friends and dancing. In the MV he’s being held back by two faceless men in a hall full of moving boxes. As the lights flicker the men turn invisible. (More proof that everything in the MV is happening entirely in their minds.) I don’t know who or what the men are supposed to represent, maybe they’re supposed to represent his parents, or maybe they represent his doubts and fears holding him back.

Towards the end he’s being sucked down a tunnel trying desperately to crawl out as something is racing towards him. At first I thought it was just particles, or grains of sand like in the cromer, going to suck him back into his ‘trauma’, but after watching it over and over again I realized; They’re toy trucks. Moving vans. The thing he was originally running from. He’s still trying to run.

Jongho’s is actually the most straightforward, even tho it took me a while to realize. When you see his scenes it’s easy to focus on the screens, because a few of the others have screens too (and they’re strobing so it’s super distracting.) What’s actually important though is what’s on the screens. It all ties back to that original injury in his first Fever Diary. In the og Fever Diary Jongho is depressed because he loves basketball sustained a horrible injury that made him unable to ever play again. In the diary he voices that he’s not just suffering from losing his dream, but also the realization that everyone left him behind.

At the start of the music video they split trauma into mental and physical, and Jongho’s is both. For his scenes he’s lying alone in a bed, in an empty room surrounded by screens. A good sum of loneliness. That’s where what’s on the screens comes in: All the screens are playing videos of people or animals running. Something he can no longer do. He can’t leave, can’t run, and he’s forced to watch other people do what he cannot.

When he starts trying to break away from the screen’s control on his mind, it shows a spider, meant to reflect his situation. He’s caught, stuck in a web, and can’t escape. For him, the breaking of the screens (similar to HJ in drowning the phone) is proof of him trying to break free from his ‘trauma’. In the MV, Jongho never manages to break the screens. There are some things I noticed in the MV that I didn’t understand, or know where to put. 1) Throughout the whole MV it’s ’snowing’. It could be ash, but it’s in almost every solo scene regardless of whose scene it is. I feel like it’s supposed to be something to show that they're all in the same kind of dream, or perhaps in the same place outside of it. 2) San’s necklace. San is wearing a ring on a his necklace. It could just be a fashion accessory but to me it looks too deliberate to be a purely aesthetic choice.

But I think that’s where I’ll end for now;

In each of the members scenes, they’re fighting themselves. Trying to break out of their own trauma, and gain the freedom to pursue their dreams of their own will. There are some whose internal conflict isn’t resolved, and some who seem to have broken out of said ‘trauma’. Yet all of them are trying, struggling, and helping eachother where they can. Much like real life.

@NiaOracle on TikTok told people to drop their hot takes during the hiatus and since I'm merely a lurker and liker on TikTok, I've brought my thoughts to Tumblr instead.

First, for some context:

I'm completely a noob. For the longest time I was a buddie-in-law as I once saw a fanfic author refer to themselves. I'd never watched the show but I'd lurked in the Tumblr and AO3 tags. But this year I started watching from Season 1.

I haven't been able to make it through Season 6 episode 1 yet and then up to Season 8, but I have a general idea about what happens between then and the latest episode due to Tumblr gifs and edits and commentary.

That being said, here are some of my very warm (but not hot) takes (maybe some of them are just observations honestly):

On Abby

People (especially in fanfics) treat Abby as this horrible monster for what she did to Buck (and yh that was pretty messed up). However, I got the vibe watching Season 1 that Abby wasn't supposed to be Buck's love interest, but Buck was supposed to be Abby's love interest.

I got the impression that Abby was more of a main character than him, but then the actress chose to leave or they realized that Buck was well-loved as a character and decided to give him a bigger more serious role. Idk, I'm probably wrong because this show's writing always seems to be sending mixed signals (or I'm just not really good at reading them).

But that's my warm take on Abby. That we were meant to take her side and feel for her and not Buck, because he was just the hot, young guy who helped her find herself outside of her caretaker role for her mom and remind her that she was a woman. Clearly it backfired though if that’s what they were going for.

On Ana

Another thing is that a lot of fanfics imply that Eddie and Ana never had a physically intimate relationship and so I was genuinely shook when I got to the panic attack episode and she's all flirty in the suit store about dressing him up and she says she also likes the other thing.

I also don't understand why she's so heavily villainized in fanfic. Like she did everything right. She was never pushy. Eddie just didn't like her that much and that was NOT HER FAULT. I feel like that was the whole point. That their relationship was never about Ana to begin with. A literal it’s not you it’s me.

Also you mean to tell me Eddie never once called her Dr Flores??? Do Americans not call PhDs Dr or something? Or was it supposed to be clear that he wasn't all the way into her. Because if my partner were a doctor that was all I'd call them.

(Wait but isn't Karen a PhD too? I can't tell if that's canon or fanon. But if it is how has Hen not called her that. Like that is prime flirting real estate).

On Taylor

Speaking of villainized exes. It brings me to the Taylor of it all. Yes, her wanting to air the story on Bobby being high...messed up! And that's our first impression of her. So I understand why people were wary of her when she returned.

(On a completely irrelevant note, people interpret her interactions with Eddie in the beginning as him being jealous or territorial, but I honestly thought it was pretty flirty for a second. If l didn’t know better I’d have thought they were going to set it up as a rivalry between the best bros).

Buck inviting her to the double date with Albert and Veronica...also messed up. I saw the phone call and I just assumed he had explained everything to her and she was in on it. The second hand embarrassment was astronomical!

Again, her airing the story about Jonah after promising Buck she wouldn't, very dishonest. But I don't think people talk enough about how messed up what Buck did to her was in the whole Lucy situation. I'd never seen the kiss before I watched the episode and mate was soooo wrong for that. He did NOT shut it down like someone in a committed relationship should have done.

Also having Taylor end her lease to move in with him. Evil! Absolutely Heinous!

Was Taylor problematic? Yes! But so was Buck! They both messed up in that relationship. And honestly I feel like his mess up was worse.

Outside of all of that I thought they were really cute. Like whenever they teamed up? Power Couple! Also yh I get why people were not excited about her love confession, because we want to see Buck be loved out loud and intentionally and explicitly after the past he’s had. But I thought it made a lot of sense for her character and everything we’d just learned about her.

On Co-Parent Buck

Okay don't @ me for this one, but I saw this take recently and realized that I 100% agree. Buck is not a co-parent to Eddie. He's simply not. And I get why people think that, but if they were both women, I don't think anyone would bat an eye at how involved Buck is, they'd just assume it was a woman being “naturally nurturing”.

How I see it, Buck's just part of the village raising Chris. And in a lot of cultures, people who are not biologically related to you are part of that village. There are so many people who are not biologically related to me that I call Aunty and Uncle and for all intents and purposes, fulfill those roles in my life.

And I understand how some people might think those are parent roles, but they're just village roles. Like my aunt would take us out for pizza almost every Saturday night. And another aunt would fly into the country to babysit us some weekends. And my mom gave one of my cousins the period talk because she was at our house when her period came for the first time. Like that's just what it looks like to have adults in your life who love you.

Like there’s very little difference to me between Carla and Buck, based on what I’ve seen, except that Carla is being paid to be there and Buck has been there from day one of his own volition.

Like even Ana. I felt like she was Eddie’s girlfriend and a responsible adult in his life, but still definitely not a co-parent.

I’m really not sure how to articulate it. Because to me what Buck and Ana are missing with Chris, Bobby has with Buck. Idk. Maybe I’m just working on vibes or something.

Fanfic Buck on the other hand. Oh boy! He's a co-parent. Like he gets the last say, on discipline and values, and safety and teaching about life. Fanfic Buck is responsible for Chris in every way that a parent is, for sure.

On Buddie

Again, people are probably going to come for me for this take, but I'mma be honest, again I think a lot of scenes are looked at with shipping lenses. For example, the will.

Let's pretend Buck and Eddie were actually related. Cousins or something. So you can't think of them as romantic. I mean you can (if you want to because this is Tumblr) but let's try not to for the sake of this thought experiment.

I 100% would leave my child to my best friend/cousin if I had a problematic family. Like this child has spent more than half of his life as a sentient human in the care of this person. They're comfortable with each other. They love each other. They've been through so much together. To me that says a whole lot less about my relationship with my cousin/best friend than it does about my child's relationship with them.

Also I would claw at the dirt for my best friend/cousin. Like platonic love does produce that kind of grief and loss. I always get so angry when people imply that romantic love is like the pinnacle of love. No! Friends can love each other that much. Guys! That's his best friend! Like you can’t tell me he wouldn’t have done the same if it was Maddie.

Butttt if they were cousins....that kitchen scene??? Wanna' go for the title???? Incredibly sus! So y'all got me there.

And that other scene! Where Eddie tells the fire fam about Ana's family christening. And then they look at each other. Like, what was that????

Also...I saw this one on TikTok and in a fic once but Season 7/8 Chris for sure would not be on board with Buddie. That would be a literal nightmare for him. The boy who thinks all romantic relationships eventually end with the other person leaving you????? Him?? He'd be excited about Buck dating his dad?? You've got to be kidding me!

On the Shooting

I say this out of curiosity and not judgement, but why does everyone think that Buck and Eddie needed to talk about the shooting. What did they need to talk about exactly? I always thought it was something they could work through individually, because I feel like it was two different types of trauma. But that might just be revealing more about me and my mental health than anything else.

Hen Cheating

This isn’t even a lukewarm take. It’s just the truth. The Hen cheating story line was cheap and just a way to stir up drama. It was plain poor writing. It does not exist to me. It never happened.

not sure if they'd be happening in the same timeline, or in what order the events would occur in if so, but i think it'd be immensely funny if not long after his twin brother had a mental break and ran off to a buddhist temple, og yhr then had to deal w the stress of his sister entering the entertainment industry where (WHAT IF!!!) she had to deal w "the unspoken rules" lol. maybe that would distract him from his competition w jmx and yhl and the desire for his parents to praise him/see him as just as good as yhl SERIOUSLY THEY NEED TO TELL HIM THAT HIS AGGRESSIVENESS AND DRIVE IS ONE THING THAT MAKES HIM BETTER THAN YHL RIGHT HE NEEDS SOMETHING OVER HER TO MAKE HIM FEEL BETTER (but also he would probably take that as a "keep driving urself to unhealthy extremes bc it's the only thing you have over your passive yet perfect sister" huh...)

if all of that follows through, this would honestly this would make og yhr's relationship with jmx AND yhl much better because now they're effectively on the same side of "DEALING WITH HIS DUMB PIECE OF SHIT SIBLINGS".

he still wouldn't like yang haoli. he's probably still kind of hostile -- but his rein on his temper is A LOT TIGHTER because yang haoli's working together with him TO STOP HIS BABY SIBLINGS FROM DOING DUMB SHIT.

to yang haoran, jmx is 1) the only person close enough to the family to actually see everything he's seeing 2) the only sane man.

(also not trying to romanticise anything, just going off what i got)

Dani and Gil are both used to the Complete Human Disaster™ that malcolm is so obviously they both know seizure first aid for future reference.

(also gentle reminder, if you don't know this go find out, there's like st John's ambulance videos that make you a functioning member of society in under 10 mins)

now, based on the confidence that each of them seem to have regarding the situation, they keep looking at each other like "huh, they seem to have done this before"

so they end up each thinking that malcolm must have epilepsy/a seizure disorder that the other knows about but they never got told.

Im just gonna say it: the exact same argument about series 11 having a woman playing the Doctor but w/ inconsistent politic & fake activism applies to series 14 & a lil of RTD2 in general but in Black. Respectability politics & flimsy anti racism all over the shop

Despite having a Black Doctor they're written for a white audience. 'It's not about Black people, its about white people' sealed the deal. It treats their Blackness as circumstantial & not something they'll have to deal with regardless of time period playing it safe & palatable
