The U.S. Air Force F-16 Viper Demonstration Team unveiled on May 15, at Edwards Air Base, California, a special 50º anniversary painting scheme in honor of the original YF-16 aircraft.
Tumblr media
The red, white and blue painting scheme was the original paint used by the YF-16 prototype that first flew in 1974. The team worked alongside the 412ª Test Wing to complete the painting scheme in less than 8 weeks, a task that would normally take approximately three months.
"When I was hired to be a commander and pilot in the summer of last year, I made it clear that I hoped to find a way to paint our plane in the prototype scheme to take America back to the beginning of the history that began 50 years ago," said Captain Taylor "FEMA" Hiester, commander and pilot of the F-16 Viper demonstration team.
Tumblr media
Tony Accurso, logistics manager of the 416º Flight Test Squadron, U.S. Air Force veteran and director of the 50º anniversary event of the F-16 at Edwards Air Base, acted as the link between the team and the 412º TW. He personally participated in the painting project as a historical consultant, his enthusiasm for the F-16 Fighting Falcon and vast knowledge of the YF-16 prototype bringing the design to life.
Tumblr media
“The importance of this YF-16 painting scheme is the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the F-16 Viper,” said Accurso. “Everyone in Edwards is very proud not only to support the Viper Demo Team, but also to celebrate the 50º anniversary of the F-16, which began right here in Edwards in 1974.”

The YF-16 prototype accidentally flew for the first time on January 20, 1974, after a "mechanical accident" during a high-speed taxi test. Phil Oestricher, the YF-16 test pilot, decided to take off and fly for six minutes to prevent the jet from falling. The official inaugural 90-minute flight was carried out on February 2, 1974. The F-16 Viper demonstration team was combined with the East and West Viper teams in 2015.

The team decided to make small changes to differentiate the new aircraft, including the exchange of the term "General Dynamics" for "20th Fighter Wing" and the addition of "Viper Demo" at the tip of the vertical stabilizer.
Tumblr media
"The only way to start was with the support of the leadership of the 20th Fighter Wing, host of the F-16 Viper Demonstration Team, who believed in the importance of this project and supported the vision we had in mind," Hiester said.
Tumblr media
In 2024, the F-16 Viper Demonstration Team will represent the Air Combat Command and the U.S. Air Force in 25 shows in four countries, celebrating the 50º anniversary of the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

[kujou clan, in shambles] and YF/YL/ZL coming home [post-Chasm Archon Interlude]?
I'll do the first now, the second in another post later:
[kujou clan in shambles]:
Embarrassingly I thought I had scenes written for this but I don't. It's the Kujou siblings, in the aftermath of Signora and the Traveller's battle with Ei, and the mood is "this is so f***ed how did Father leave us with this big a mess".
Kamaji feels like an idiot for not realising. He wasn't in the meetings but he thinks he should have put it together. He's trying to put out fires left and right. Trying to get his claim as interim Clan head recognised while Takayuki sits around in a cell not saying anything. Logistics for the any-day-now VHD repeal. Sorting through a cadre of retainers and advisors and figuring out who's loyal to Takayuki vs who's loyal to the Shogunate. Oh and trying to figure out where he stands with interim Kanjou Commissioner Hiiragi Chisato.
Oh and the other Tenryou clans are circling. Bit of a young!Ayato situation.
Masahito couldn't have known, was so far from the seats of power that he can genuinely say he was just following orders, but that doesn't change the guilt. Doesn't change the fact that he felt in his element fighting this war. If he delivers the armistice terms to Watatsumi himself, bares his neck, offers to fall on his sword... will that be enough?
And, last but not least... well, have the opening scene outline I thought I'd written last year oops:
It's late evening, the day after the Tenshukaku incident, and Kamaji stumbles into his father's former office, now his. He is exhausted.
It takes him a good five minutes to realise that there's supposed to be a bodyguard posted inside here. No sign.
He grimaces. An assassin, then.
Too many enemies to know for sure who. Perhaps the Shuumatsuban, perhaps his own Clan staging a coup, perhaps the Fatui cleaning up after themselves.
Kamaji could call for help.
"If you're here to kill me, make it quick," he says, not feeling anything at all as the words leave his lips. "You'd save me a lot of trouble."
Kamaji is no fighter.
Kamaji is tired. Kamaji is so very tired.
No response. Just the tightening of a drawstring.
Ah. Kamaji is no fighter, but he's spent enough time watching his siblings in the training ground to know the sound of a well-maintained bow. Especially the sound of a professionally restored heirloom hamayumi.
"The exile and bounty should be repealed by tomorrow night," he says cautiously.
"You knew," says the voice, so calm and yet so very, very angry.
Kamaji sighs, head in his palms. "No," he says, "but I should have realised."
A thought occurs to him.
"You didn't either?" he says.
"Of course not," she spits.
"Forgive me," Kamaji says, "your proximity to the Shogun... I assumed you'd had a change of heart, not that..."
"We are talking about you," the intruder replies, and he's known her for decades, he can hear how close she is to tears, how her anger is barely holding her together.

Half YF-12 and half SR-71: the story of “The Bastard,” the only SR-71C ever built
By Dario Leone
May 1 2018
SR-71C S/N 61-7981 was nicknamed “The Bastard” since it was a hybrid comprised of the rear fuselage of the first YF-12A and a functional engineering mockup of an SR-71A forward fuselage built for static testing
Taken at Hill Air Force Base (AFB) in June 2016, the interesting clip in this post shows SR-71C, “The Bastard” S/N 61-7981, that was the only C model Blackbird ever built and was the last SR-71 to be manufactured. It was nicknamed “The Bastard” since it was a hybrid comprised of the rear fuselage of the first YF-12A (S/N 60-6934) and a functional engineering mockup of an SR-71A forward fuselage built for static testing.
The plane was built to replace the second of the two B model trainers after it crashed on Jan. 11, 1968. The C model made its first flight on Mar. 14, 1969 from the Lockheed plant at Palmdale, California, with Blackbird Chief Project Pilot Robert J. Gilliland at the controls and Lockheed test pilot Steve Belgeau as Reconnaissance Systems Officer. After flight testing it was delivered to the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Beale AFB, California, on Sep. 3, 1970.
The aircraft made its last flight on Apr. 11, 1976 and was removed from flying status on Jun. 24, 1976 with only 556.4 flight hours, not including the 180.9 hours accumulated on the aircraft as YF-12A S/N 60-6934. It was then processed for long-term storage at the Lockheed plant in Palmdale, California.

Through the intervention of Utah Senator Orrin G. Hatch, Hill Aerospace Museum was assigned the aircraft by the Air Force in April 1990 and immediately began planning its relocation from Beale AFB to Hill AFB.
Representatives from the museum, the Air Force Heritage Foundation of Utah, the 67th Aerial Port Squadron, and the 405th Combat Logistics Support Squadron (CLSS) traveled to California in July 1990 to determine the best way to disassemble, package, and transport the aircraft.
Then a sixteen-member team from the 405th CLSS went to California in August 1990 and broke the aircraft down into three major pieces and assorted smaller components, including a J58 engine and start cart, palletizing them all for transport on a C-5 Galaxy cargo aircraft. However, when the disassembly operation was completed no cargo aircraft was immediately available to transport the pieces back to the base. Everything would have to wait.
In the Spring of 1991 representatives from the 67th Aerial Port Squadron and the 405th CLSS traveled twice to Beale AFB via two large, flat-bed trucks to retrieve most of the palletized components, leaving only the largest pieces that would require transport by cargo aircraft. In August 1991, one year after the disassembly had begun, air transport was finally arranged via a C-5 from Travis AFB.
Once all the pieces were finally on base, the aircraft components were gathered together in a large hangar belonging to the 405th CLSS for reassembly and restoration. Volunteers, Air Force Reservists, and many active-duty personnel were involved in the intricate two-month process of piecing the aircraft back together. On Oct. 16, 1991 the completed aircraft was towed to the museum and placed on display.
