Crooked Kingdom spoilers ahead.

I find Kaz and Inej's interaction here really revealing, even though it's just a few lines. Kaz's warning seems quite light on the surface even with a slight wry humour injected in, but I think there's a depth of meaning behind the words that sheds a little light on their relationship.

Kaz has been using revenge as an incentive to keep living and scheming for so long that it's become a part of him, a part that he is a slave to and a part that has turned him into someone with a hardened heart. But I think it's safe to say that Inej Ghafa is his moral compass. Inej with her saints and her proverbs and her innate pureness. She usually understands and sympathizes with any issues that the rest of the crew face and she despises criminal acts even though she understands their necessity.

By this scene though, she is still shaken by her time as a hostage and she too is thinking about and starting to fixate on revenge and in my opinion, this irks Kaz because he doesn't want her to become like him, consumed with the need to get even, because to him she is someone who is pure and good.

And if that isn't one of the most pivotal Kaz/Kanej depth moments that make me want to squeal I don't know what is.

In my head the 'single shenanigan' was accidentally blabbing their plans and getting Inej injured, which Kaz is always quick to remind him of even if he may have forgiven him.

Kaz: This is not the time for your shenanigans.

Jesper: It was a single shenanigan.

Ok, ok BUT can we take a moment to think about how Inej discovered what her goal in life would be whilst she was climbing up a boiling hot incinerator shaft with her rubber slippers literally burning off her feet. Like, what methods are there for us mortals?

Alright so I just finished reading Six of Crows and...

HOW DID I NOT KNOW THERE WAS A SEQUEL? Or I probably did know but forgot and then had my heart torn when it ended that way.

Ok so, Imma make this short 'cus I am itching to get started on The Crooked Kingdom because I need Kanej in order to survive.

I really really liked this book, mostly because it kept you on tenterhooks the whole time and made you be fully invested in all of the characters. You know how sometimes in those book blurbs/jackets they have those one-liner reviews where someone says 'Unputdownable'? Well, this was.

I think that may also be because of Kaz. He's such an unpredictable character and you never know what he's going to do next and you as the reader don't have the added benefit of knowing that whatever he'll do is necessarily for Good (or at least Good the way we see it). Because of that and all the interesting plot twists and intriguing world building, it's difficult to stop yourself from reading more.

Furthermore, all of the ships are quite adorable, although at the moment I think my favourite is probably Kanej.

In summary, the way Leigh Bardugo kept me guessing here was sheer brilliance and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of this type of genre.
