On Social Media

You may have noticed that some parts of yesterday’s blog post made it to other social networks, primarily LinkedIn. I did post a little to Twitter yesterday, but mostly personal stuff and not business-related. I’m having a bit of a clarifying moment when it comes to social media lately that I want to dig into a bit more. LinkedIn doesn’t suffer from this malady because of its nature, but depending on its members' ability to police themselves, it may only be a matter of time. This malady I refer to is the weaponization of social media and the appropriation of content.

Clearly, the whole point behind social media is engagement, but I don’t think any of us anticipated what has happened in the last 4 to 5 years. In retrospect, we should have. If you lived through the age of shock or conservative talk radio, you might have an inkling of what I mean. Someone says something outrageous, and it’s an almost Pavlovian response. We MUST engage. The part I don’t think we could have predicted was social media promoting the outrageousness to the degree they did. Social media might recognize the part they played in this mess one day, but I have a hard time continuing to participate in something designed to promote Shock's Culture for the sake of likes and dollars.

LinkedIn feels different somehow. Yes, it’s a social network, but it is populated by people who have a vested interest in maintaining a professional appearance. I’ve seen many times when someone tries to lob a metaphorical Molotov Cocktail into the mix, and someone says, “That’s not appropriate for this space.” I hope that means that legitimate content is King there, and the engagement follows as a result of the substance of that content, not on the controversy. For now, I’ll put my focus there and see how it goes.

The other issue I mentioned is the appropriation of content, and that’s discussed on next Wednesday’s show.

Rebundling The News

The great Dave Winer:

The news industry product needs to be re-bundled. I believe the rewards will be huge for the first publication that bets on this idea. They wouldn't be the first, btw -- My.Yahoo did it in the 00's. Have the guts to point to your competition. And if you have a paywall, send them some money and some readers. Now that Jeff Bezos is retired, and owns such a platform, I would stand up and applaud if they had the guts to try this out. I'd also line up to hook my blog into such a network. Not because my writing depends on making money from it, it doesn't, but to help disrupt the news industry that's daydreaming itself to death over distribution, competition and economics.

What I wouldn’t give to be able to subscribe to one feed with what I’ll call an “a la carte” option of news and editorial options. That was one of the great things about RSS Readers at the outset, but content is increasingly siloed or anything more than an excerpt is behind a paywall. I’ve learned never to click on an LA Times Article Link for example, because I know I will never see the story, I’ll get a splash page instead. Same with WaPo. Would I pay some money for the a la carte option I just mentioned? Possibly. Would you?

Matthew at SLR Lounge is never buying another Sandisk SD Card:

Unfortunately, I’m done buying Sandisk SD cards. and I think you can see why. They seem to be more flimsy than any other memory card (make or model) I have ever had. Inevitably, they split open and spill their memory chip guts.

After looking at these pictures and my stash of Sandisk Memory Cards, I don’t have what you would call a Peaceful Easy Feeling about this. I have more than a few of these, and while I don’t put them through the paces, a professional photographer does, I would like to know they’re gonna hold up. It doesn’t look good, I’ll tell you that much.

The only social-networking moment I can compare it to in recent years would be the 2015 South by Southwest festival, when the streets of Austin were briefly overrun by people broadcasting themselves on Meerkat. Then, as now, the once-stable field of social networks hummed with a fresh sense of possibility.

I have an account at Clubhouse, which as of right now, lies dormant. I have a habit of opening accounts at different apps with my preferred handle so that no one else takes it and gets a taste of the app before passing judgment (Yes, including THAT one). Newton calls Clubhouse the ‘Medium of Podcasts’ in that it appears to democratize audio in a way that Anchor didn’t, and the experience is as clean and ‘radiant’ as Medium. I agree. I’ll be interested to see how the app is used as time goes on. The funny thing about democratizing media is that everybody is ‘the media.’ The downside to that is that everyone—including me—is ‘the media.’ Open source guys will love it. Matt Deegan over at Matt on Audio might be a bit skeptical…

At it’s worst, I’d say the content is basically the annoying self-promoters from LinkedIn given a microphone to talk to their echo-chamber. At it’s best you can say it’s a place for like-minded people to get together and have a discussion in a screen’s-off environment.

Matt seems to think this might lend itself to more of a panel or conference vibe, and I can see it. The trouble with that is I also see the self-appointed ‘gurus’ and marketers taking it over much like they’ve tried to do with podcasting the second they see money in it. (Rule One: Marketers. Ruin. My comic book collection

So here is my own comic book collection. I’ve been reading comics on and off for most of my life but it’s only been in the last 4 years that i’ve become a regular reader again. I exclusively bought single issues digitally for a while but 2 years ago i decided i should buy some physical stuff, and here’s what i have to date.

So that’s the top shelf, complete with my first Funko Pop that i bought actually only the other day, and it’s Superman (my favourite character) from the upcoming Justice League movie. I’m gonna buy more.

As you can see i have the main Crisis events as well as Flashpoint and DC Universe Rebirth, and my personal favourite stories of All-Star Superman, Kingdom Come and Multiversity. I have some of the Earth One graphic novels but honestly i’ve been a bit lazy in buying the others. The Superman books next to the Funko Pop are the Death Of Superman series, i saw them on a post on Reddit some time ago and thought they looked great on the shelf so i bought them for myself.

Next up is my Batman shelf, it’s not as big as i’d like but i love what i do have, in particular Tomasi & Gleason’s Batman & Robin series. I also have a few of the DC You books but if you notice one of them is upside down, and that’s the Bizarro book, so of course it’s the wrong way around!

I’m sure some of you are wondering about the Batman plush, and it’s from a collection by Hallmark called “Itty Bitty”. When they started they only had a handful of them but now they have Marvel characters, Star Wars characters and more.

So there’s a lot of choices on this shelf, i have some DC You greats in Gotham By Midnight and Grayson, but the best part for me is the Green Lantern stuff. I love Geoff Johns’ work on the series, starting with Green Lantern Rebirth back in 2004 but it was easier for me to get back into the series with the New 52, which is why i haven’t bought the old ones yet like Sinestro Corps War and Black Night. They’re on the list though!

You can also see my Justice League books, and as you’ll see on the next shelf i do have the complete New 52 collection, including the fantastic Power Of The Gods book from Darkseid War.

Here you can see more of my DC You favourites in Martian Manhunter and the amazing Omega Men book by Tom King, and i also have the Shazam book by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank....honestly how this character doesn’t have his own on-going series is INCOMPREHENSIBLE.

I’m also buying Titans related stuff now with Rebirth, i’ve loved both Teen Titans and Titans but i’m not too familiar with older stuff and i did not like the New 52 Teen Titans series by Lobdell. You can also see my Wonder Woman collection but i stopped collecting the New 52 series after Brian Azzarello left, mainly because i loathed the run by Meredith and David Finch. It’s the one New 52 collection that i don’t intend on completing, but i have gone back to buying it again thanks to the wonderful Greg Rucka Rebirth series.

And yes, that’s another Itty Bitty! That was a gift from my 5 year old niece lol.

This is where i expose myself as a DC fanboy. My Marvel collection is dismal, bu in my defence i don’t find much value in the way that Marvel do their trades nowadays. They’re more expensive than the DC ones but they contain less content on average. The DC books in my experience average 6 issues per trade but the Marvel ones contain between 4-5, 6 at most. That is why i have stopped collecting the rest of All New X-Men and Guardians Of The Galaxy books.

Also i have one solitary Saga book. I love Saga and it’s on my Amazon wishlist, but i always end up buying other books first.

So i guess i should address the Meerkat dressed as Batman. In the UK there’s a comparison company called Compare The Market and they have Meerkats (who run CompareTheMeerkat.com lol) as their mascots. When Batman Vs Superman came out they had a promotion where if you signed up for car insurance you would get a plush dressed up as either Batman or Superman. I don’t drive but luckily my brother’s ex-girlfriend does and she got it for me.

So this is my final shelf, and it’s more of a decorative thing than anything else.

I don’t have a local comic book store where i live in the UK but my sister does in London, so when Rebirth happened she managed to snag me first prints of both DC Universe Rebirth #1 and Superman #1, bagged and boarded. They’re the only floppies i own (currently) but they’re two of my favourite parts of my collection.

The Superman book in the middle is a leather bound diary i bought from CostCo. I thought it looked awesome, just like my Batman Pez dispenser lol.

And finally....

My limited edition Superman Returns statue. This was given to me by a friend for my 21st birthday 10 years ago and is my favourite thing. As you can see the arm is busted, i’m still not sure how it happened but i do know that it’s almost impossible to reattach with any glue. I’ve tried dozens of super glues, even super strong Gorilla Glue but it doesn’t work. I’m reduced to using this white tack stuff but i’m not happy about it. I might try some clay or something but in the mean time this will have to do.

So there you have it, my collection. I have plans for more stuff and more bookshelves (thankfully i live near an Ikea) so who knows, maybe i’ll post more pictures as my collection expands.

The Day The Leaf Traveled Back In Time... And Conquered Her Fears

Blists Hill is one of my family’s favourite places and one that always intrigued Amy. A Victorian village; once you’re through the doors, you step back in time. The shops are from the nineteenth century, as are the products, the food, the outfits the staff wear and before you head into the village, you need to change your money into pounds, shillings and pence.

If Amy thought British money was hard to get your head around, she’d have struggled as much as us with this! 

Once you’re in the village itself, you can buy fresh bread and biscuits at the bakers, stop and have a chat with the friendly policeman with his dog in the pub or pop into the drapers for a hat because Mummy didn’t realise the forecast was for sun! Poor kid.

One of my favourite things that we did was spend time at the Victorian photographer’s studio where we got to play dress up as ‘Sister Suffragettes’ and channel our inner Pankhurst. It was a part we were born to play!

It was so nice spending time with Becca, particularly as I don’t get to see my sister as often as I’d like. She lives almost 90 miles away near Birmingham and works very hard as a midwife. We’re all really proud of her and Aneurin so obviously adores her.

A gentle walk by the old railway tracks soon turned into another ‘adventure’. Aneurin refused any help all the way up the 207ft incline and scrambled his way to the top. By the end of it, I was holding onto Becca for deal life and Aneurin wasn’t even breaking a sweat!

The idea of ‘rest’ seems a foreign concept to my child, so today we went off to Eureka, which is the national Children’s Museum and has interactive exhibits as diverse as the human body and robots to space exploration and how the plumbing in your loo works! 

He even got to fly a spaceship - Captain Malcolm Reynolds, eat your heart out!

My child is fearless... mostly fearless. He’s not keen on the Compare the Market meerkat but he is a tad creepy. Those who know me know that I have phobias of three things: bridges, wet tissue paper and people dressed up in costume... yes, I know I’m an actor but that’s a whole other story. Since becoming a Mum, I’ve tried to fight my fears, in the hope that they won’t be passed on to Aneurin.  Amy always liked quotes about battling fear. Franklin D. Roosevelt said that:  “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear.”

Today, I tackled my fear. I didn’t conquer it because even by a quarter of the way across I could feel my vision closing in and I genuinely thought ‘I can’t faint, I’m on a bridge going over the highest motorway in the United Kingdom’. The thing I kept telling myself is, “if he can do it, I can do it.”

And he didn’t have a care in the world; he had no fear and I certainly wasn’t going to be the one to give it to him. Yes, I felt faint, yes, I thought I was going to throw up but I did it because of him and I did it for him.

Sometimes they are from scammers saying I’ve won money or I need to send money or I need to do something else that always – quite frankly – seems like a bit too much effort. Nevertheless, if I’m stuck for things to do (ie: I have loads of stuff to do but don’t want to do it) then I quite like to spend a few joyous minutes searching for threatening emails and then reading them out with comedy voices. The ideas generator also pushed me out of my comfort zone because I’m not particularly confident drawing people and animals. However, I was glad to be forced to attempt these subjects, as so many of my ideas for work involve people and yet I tend not to attempt them because of how difficult I find them to draw.
