save for the dual destinies dlc case, i’ve finished my first play through of the mainline ace attorney games. incredibly solid series. i have a draft with my thoughts on each case in the aj trilogy + game ratings. dunno if i’d wanna post it though, it’s kinda long.

so instead, i’ll post some misc thoughts about phoenix and edgeworth portrayals across mainline/aai + my personal favorite interpretations of them by the writing team!

spoilers for AA mainline and AAI duology

by far, my favorite phoenix portrayal is og trilogy phoenix. the way he interacts with his environment and the people around him is very authentic, albeit rude as hell (which, in hindsight, is even more authentic for phoenix, so…). saw someone’s tumblr post mention that phoenix is such a “straight guy” which…yeah LMAO. real to life accuracy, so much so it’s infuriating. i think what i’ve played of dd’s dlc case captures what i wanted to see from post-trilogy phoenix in that he’s still an asshole and comically stupid, but not actually stupid, if ykwim. something i disliked abt the rest of aa5 and aa6 is how the writing team watered his character down to the following two oversimplifications: “phoenix only wins cases bc he bluffs!” and “uhh...what evidence does phoenix present now?”

don’t mistake a silly man for a stupid man. mia calls phoenix a genius in the og trilogy. phoenix dives in head first but he’s meticulous when it comes to drawing out the truth. most of all, he doesn’t outwardly show how frazzled he is (see that one drew misham quote about phoenix quietly watching the court as he’s accused of forging evidence), even if he feels that way. i get the colorful usage of expressions is for comedic effect but it just makes him look like he doesn’t know wtf he’s doing, and that’s a disservice to his character. yes, he bluffs, but he isn’t clueless. anyway, i’m excited to replay the first trilogy now that i “know” second trilogy phoenix. that might also just be my way of saying “give me back MY phoenix”, bc the last time i’m (mostly) on board w his portrayal is in aa4, and even then i didn’t like the dialogue in his forged evidence trial.

*though, as of writing this, i’ve seen some good arguments abt his forged evidence trial dialogue that make me think ok maybe it was actually pretty accurate. let’s see wht i think on replay

on the other hand, my favorite edgeworth—at least in principle—is post-apollo justice edgeworth. in many ways, i think how he’s portrayed at 35 is how he would’ve been had dl-6 not occurred, barring his career choice. still a bit pompous, still fairly mean (at least on the surface, we all know he cares more than he lets on) and perhaps a bit uptight, but self-assured and just. the writing team makes a point to show that edgeworth doesn’t care about prestige or fancy titles. that feels like him in a way post-first trilogy edgeworth doesn’t. this particular point was fleshed out in aa1 and rfta, tho, so idk if i can give yamazaki credit for it.

there are some things that will always bother me abt post-first trilogy edgeworth (the problems are present in the aai duology as well) where the writing team shoves him into a box teeming with boring tropes for his character archetype.

edgeworth is fine w pictures in the first trilogy, but comes to hate them in the aai duology.

ik it’s small but honestly what was the reason? what justification is there for this outside of wanting to fit edgeworth into a “cold character” stereotype?

bridge to the turnabout and turnabout ablaze are only about a month apart. i’m not buying into the sudden aversion to picture taking, regardless how minute a criticism it is. in any case, i feel like what i’m trying to say comes through w these screenshots: yamazaki’s edgeworth is always just a little off.

i am forgetting where i saw the post and i have too many liked posts to scroll thru to find it again but i saw a reblog?? tumblr post?? abt yamazaki and takumi’s diff approaches to edgeworth, where takumi says edgeworth listens to trot while yamazaki thinks he’d listen to classical music, and if that doesn’t drive the point home, idk wht will.

why then, did i enjoy post-aj edgeworth most? short answer is i’m taking liberties w his development and its implications. while i never completely buy into post-aa3 edgeworth, i can digest and get behind most of him when i’m not nitpicking, unlike w post-aj phoenix. does edgeworth feel a little uninspired and one- as opposed to three-dimensional? yeah, but his core is so strong i can overlook it. i’ll miss seeing a developed edgeworth when replaying the trilogy. him at 35 makes me feel warm inside.

anyway, i didn’t intend to start hating when i made this post bc i ultimately still believe the second trilogy was pretty good, if not overly ambitious with it's storytelling. maybe i'll post that AJ trilogy review.

overall, tho, t&t and aai2 were my favorite games to come out of the franchise. i’m going to do that slow replay of the first trilogy, aai duology, and aj:aa before making final judgments.

It’s cold. You need to wear more layers.

You feel shivers start to trail down your spine, your undershirt suddenly not feeling quite enough as Gojo wrapped his own uniform blazer around you.

His extremely chilly, cold feeling blazer.

Unrelenting and refusing to let you out of his hold.

“Satoru…” You’re trying not to push him away, the cold radiating from his body AND his snow covered jacket making your chill resistance even lower.

“Could you let me go?”

“Nope!”

“But you’re really cold!” You’re now struggling against his grip, trying to get off his lap and his arm unlocked from around your waist. So that you can free yourself from his scarily glacial chill. Why does he run so cold?

“And? You feel really nice and warm. Like a little warm water bottle! He smushed his cheek against yours as you struggled to push him away, squirming around.

“Nwooo, stop!” You shove his imposing cheek away with a glove-clad hand. “You’re too cold!”

“I think you’ll look cute even with a little bit of frost bi-“

Suguru has saved you, flicking his partner’s forehead hard enough for him to let you go.

You act quickly, lunging into Suguru’s open and waiting arms instead, ensuring that the fluttering jacket didn’t touch the ground as you hung it on your arm instead.

“Thank you! You’re a lifesaver!” You whined, reaching pulling your muffler on properly from its disheveled state.

Gojo really was a walking fridge.

“Noooo-! My personal heater!” He grabbed at the air as he dragged himself forward, aiming to grapple you into his deathly embrace of ice and teeth chattering.

Geto quickly swerved, dodging him and maneuvering you as Gojo stumbled on his feet.

You let out a sigh of relief. Another few minutes of guaranteed non-Gojo heat.

You’ve thought you’ve escaped. Thought.

“Thank you and all, Suguru but…” You start to panic a little as you feel his arms tightening around you.

“Could you perhaps let me go now?”

He simply smiles down at you, eyes closed in what seemed like bliss as he continued to hold you.

“Nope.”

Goddamn weather.

“Suguryunnnnn, make way for me!” You shuddered at the expanse of incoming freeze when you felt Satoru wrap his long arms around the both of you.

“Then all you have to do is look at him like I taught you, okay?” Shoko reaffirms, holding you by your shoulders, determinedly looking you in the eye as you stare back at her.

“Wha-“

“Target spotted. Into action, brave soldier.” You’re immediately flung outwards, a strong chest catching you as you rubbed at your nose, looking up at the ‘target’.

“Satoru,” You began, your hands nervously twiddling with each other as your eyes surreptitiously peeked back at Shoko hiding behind a wall, flashing you a thumbs up.

Time to put the mission into play.

Your eyes met his smiling face.

“There’s a new crepe shop that-“

“Yes.”

You’re taken aback. “I… Didn’t finish my sentence?”

Gojo hummed, hand sweeping out snowflakes from your hair.

“You ran out of allowance money right?”

“I was right, wasn’t I?” He squishes your face in his cold hands as you struggle to think of a retort. You can’t give away Shoko’s plan so easily, even if he was right!

“Awwwe, don’t worry.” He now pinches one of your cheeks, before wrapping you up in his arms.

“I’ll buy you as many crepes as you want!”

They were thinking buying back some for you and Shoko, but since you so cutely asked Satoru, they simply left with you.

The small motel room glowed with playful energy as the two brothers wrestled on one of the beds, the elder easily overpowering the younger. Unsurprisingly, their father, John, was off on a hunt, leaving Dean to care for his four-year-old brother. 

Of course, with Dean as his only companion, Sam was bound to get bored, so he’d end up picking fights with his big brother, even though he knew he was likely to lose.

As predicted, their little scuffle ended with Dean carefully straddling Sam’s hips, pinning his arms above his head with one hand, while the other formed a claw shape and hovered above the younger’s stomach.

“I’m gonna get you, Sammy!” Dean growled, his fingers wiggling just above the kid’s tummy.

“Nooo, go away, De!” Sam protested, already giggling up a storm.

“Nuh-uh! You asked for it, little brother! Now the tickle monster’s gonna getcha!”

The playful threat made little Winchester squeal, shaking his head as excitement filled his laughter.

“Eeek!! No tickle monster! Hehehe!”

The sight of his younger brother tittering with excitement made Dean’s heart melt, completely overwhelmed with affection. This is how he wanted Sam to feel all the time—happy, giddy, and without a care in the world. He would do anything to keep the kid in this joyous state.

“Yes, tickle monster! He’s coming for you, Sammy-boy!” Dean’s fingers halted their movements momentarily as he pinched the hem of Sam’s shirt, slowly lifting it to reveal the soft skin of his belly. The gesture caused Sam’s eyes to widen, and his laughter spiked in anticipation, his little body wriggling as if he were already being tickled. The reaction made Dean’s grin widen.

“Ooh, giggling already? You know… that only makes the tickle monster wanna strike even more!”

“Dehehee!! Pleeeease!!”

To anyone else, that might have sounded like a plea for mercy—a little kid desperate for his brother to stop and let him go. But Dean knew his little brother better than anyone, and those pleas? They weren’t for him to stop—no, no—they were for him to keep going.

“Alright, alright… you want me to quit teasing?”

The response was a little nod. The kid just wanted Dean to stop with the anticipation and teasing… he wanted the real deal!

“No more teasing, De!” Sam huffed, his cheeks already flushed with both laughter and embarrassment.

Dean replied with a simple “Okay,” before releasing Sam’s wrists and using both hands to hover over the kid’s exposed tummy, fingers wiggling menacingly as before. What the elder did next caused the younger’s eyes to widen and his giggles to pick back up.

“Five… four…”

Dean started to count down, his fingers slowly lowering with each number.

Sam squeaked and started to flail, using his now freed hands to grab onto his older brother’s wrists, though he didn’t have the strength to push them away. If the anticipation wasn’t strong before, it sure as hell was now.

“De, nohoho!” Sam pleaded emptily, his expression glowing with giddiness. But Dean didn’t stop, his fingers lowering even more as he reached zero.

“Two… two and a half…” His hands were now centimeters above the quivering skin, but he stopped wiggling, simply holding them still. The room went silent as Sam held his breath, his gaze locked onto Dean’s hands.

Then suddenly, Dean shouted, “ONE!!” before gently digging his fingers into Sam’s soft tummy, causing the younger to shriek and burst into high-pitched laughter, writhing and kicking under the sudden attack.

“EEK!! Dehehehe, noooo!!” Sam cackled, his brown hair whipping back and forth as he shook his head.

Dean couldn’t hold back a chuckle of his own, his heart swelling at how adorable his little brother looked.

“Grrr! The tickle monster’s got you now, Sammy! There’s no escaping his wrath!” he teased, skittering his blunt nails all over the boy’s lower belly. Each poke, scratch, and scribble left the little Winchester in further hysterics, his cheeks a rosy shade, decorated with those precious little dimples that never failed to bring a smile to Dean’s face.

How could one little boy hold so much weight in a person’s life? Despite the darkness that engulfed the world outside, each little giggle from the boy seemed to fill their small motel room with balls of sunshine.

Dean paused the tickles momentarily to give the kid a chance to breathe.

“Hey, Sammy… y’know what would make this even better?” he asked with a smirk, mischief dancing in his eyes.

“W-What?” Sam tilted his head innocently, his eyes sparkling with curiosity as he continued to giggle.

In a blur of motion, Dean grabbed Sam’s wrists in each hand and pinned them on either side of him.

“Raspberries!”

Sam’s eyes widened to the size of saucers, and he couldn’t get a single word out before his brother’s lips connected with his belly, blowing a loud, messy raspberry into the soft skin.

The younger let out a shrill shriek and tugged at his arms, his legs kicking wildly in every direction. His laughter was loud and infectious, able to melt even the coldest of hearts. Maybe if their father could hear it, it could even melt his…

After some time, Dean relented, not wanting to kill his little brother with tickles. He sat beside the giggling child, rubbing his tummy to ease the leftover tickles.

“You alright, Sammy?” he asked, just to be sure, his fingers instinctively moving to run through Sam’s soft, brown hair.

Sam opened his mirthfully teary eyes, looking up at his big brother with utmost admiration. He nodded tiredly, leaning into the elder’s hand.

“Uh-huh… that was fun, De.”

The response made Dean smile warmly, his chest tightening. He leaned down to press a tender kiss to his brother’s forehead.

“Yeah, it was. But I bet you’re tired now, huh?”

That made Sam pout a bit. “I’m not—” he was cut off by his own yawn, signaling that he was indeed tired.

He averted his gaze, smiling timidly. “Maybe a little…”

Dean snorted, shaking his head in exasperation.

“You’re such a dork.” He grinned, affectionately ruffling Sam’s hair before pulling him into his lap.

“I think Scooby-Doo is on right now… you wanna sit on the couch and eat ice cream while we watch it?”

The offer made Sam’s eyes light up, and he quickly shot up, ecstatic.

“Yes!!” he exclaimed, practically vibrating with excitement.

The giddy response coaxed a laugh out of Dean as he stood up, playfully slinging Sam over his shoulder and walking them over to the couch.

“Alright, alright! Someone’s excited!”

Sam squealed as Dean plopped him onto the couch before following suit, pulling the kid close to his side.

“Now, you stay here while I grab us some ice cream… then we’ll watch as much Scooby-Doo as you want.”

Sam giggled and gave his brother a big hug. “Love you, De!”

The simple display of affection caught Dean off guard, and he froze momentarily before wrapping his arms around the smaller boy, giving him a squeeze.

“I-I love you too, Sammy…”

And so, the Winchester brothers spent the rest of the afternoon snuggled up under a blanket, sharing a bowl of ice cream, laughing at the cartoon dog getting into mischief and occasionally helping catch the bad guys.

When Sam eventually fell asleep, curled up against Dean’s side, Dean couldn’t have been more proud to be a big brother.

Jordan, ik you probably don’t want to have a whole conversation about this but I recently watched Drew Gooden’s video on the live action atla series (it just affirmed that I definitely don’t want to watch it lol) but it did inspire me to do a rewatch of the original and ughhhhhh it’s so incredible😭😭 all the little characterization details are SO rewarding and so good. Zuko’s small acts of kindness, even early on in book 1, just show that he’s always been Ursa’s son and help set up his arc for the rest of the show. Going after the captured Iroh instead of tracking the Gaang in Winter Solstice. Saving his crew in The Storm. It just shows you that at his core he believes in doing the right thing, and that’s a huge part of why his overall arc pays off so well. It’s the same with all of them—seeing Sokka put on his war paint and his battle regalia (in ep 2 or 3 I think) to confront Zuko in the village…it shows you that he takes such pride in the responsibility of being a leader and a warrior, especially in his dad’s absence. Yet when he gets to Kyoshi, we see the humbled side of him, and that he’s devoted to learning and respectful of the masters in their craft (whether it’s the Kyoshi warriors or Piandao or even the mechanist) and wants to learn what they have to teach him. Even Jet, who is always a very complicated character for me, is so compelling and so real. He’s suffered horribly and unfortunately has let that radicalize him. Tbh it reminds me of when anti war groups in the 60s would bomb places and things like that…the mission is “peace” but you’ve let your mission turn you into a violent radical who doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong anymore. I KNOW I don’t have to tell you lol but all the little details of this show, from design to writing to performances, are just incredibleeee and I’m so happy it exists.

GISICKAKAAK what a fun message to wake up to!

Yes I am simply pretending the new series doesn’t exist because I know it’ll just piss me off if I watch it. And I know myself well enough to know I am just not mature enough to separate the original from the new, so yeah I won’t be watching and I doubt I ever will. The one thing I am mature about is that I don’t “hate watch” things anymore lmao

I think this is why zuko is like my favorite character. I feel like he was the first character I was ever like “no, that’s actually my son” when I got older. He is so fucking complicated and so not at all what you think he’s going to be. He’s not just the antagonist, he’s Aang’s foil. They parallel each other in so many different ways. There’s a scene in book 3 where Aang literally says, “I need my honor back”, and it cross fades from one side of his face to the other side of zuko’s!!

All of the characters have incredible arcs. They all learn something about themselves, and they actually use that to grow and get better. Remember, these are literally children who were thrusted into adulthood, forced to grow up way too early. Katara is a nagging mother, but she also remembers how to be a kid and have fun and laugh. Sokka is a sexier idiot, but what teenage boy isn’t? He unlearns so much behavior, and even though he still feels like he’s the leader of the group, and in so many ways he is, he learns that it’s okay to let someone else take the lead, that he doesn’t always have to be right or in charge. Toph learns that she’s loveable for who she is, blindness and shoeless and a badass.

Aang and Zuko obviously have the most difficult arcs. Aang has to come to terms with the fact that he ran away, and a mass genocide of his people ensued. But if he hadn’t left, he would have died along with the rest of them. Like it or not, it was fate that he froze himself. And most avatars get told who they are at 16 and are given all the time in the world to learn the other elements. Aang was 12…and then had to learn the other elements in less than a year. I would argue that he didn’t necessarily master all the elements in that year. I think he learned enough about each to get by, and I’d like to think he took some time afterwards to really master them. He still relied on his air bending a lot. Whereas if we look at Korra, she did a lot of fire bending even though water was her natural element.

And my baby zuko…I could go on for days about him. My tortured emo son. He overcame so much. He cried, he learned to laugh again, he learned how to be young again. He hated being in the slums of ba sing se, but he also went on dates and got closer with his uncle like he never had been. He was such a sweet little boy. The storm always makes me cry. Zuko alone always makes me cry.

As for the seb questions:

Seb was never in it for the funsies, he’s got actual reason for killing the few that he did. A part of the old lore still stands where the travelling Romans would get attacked by him (or was it him👀) when they got too close to region where he was hiding in the forest.

The other reason is uhh classified for fanfic reasons 💀💀 but it bottles down to him having similar ideologies as both Luke and dare I say Octavian.

Also his kill count got reduced to 24 cuz otherwise the timeline wouldn’t make sense 💀💀

Yes and no. Sebtavian still remains canon since it’s crucial to the story. The whole point of the relationship was that it’s supposed to be forced upon them. If Seb hadn’t been struck by Eros’s arrow, he would’ve never fallen for Octavian in the first place and would’ve killed him that day without a second thought.

The thing is that their friendship heals Seb more than romance. It’s one step forward, but then the effects of the love arrow act up and they’re two steps back. It’s a never ending nightmare because they’re both also using each other for their own plans.

Besides this new take on the ship, everything else about them is the same.

I threw in sm Apollo/Daphne parallels in there btw cuz ya know ik a sucker for some good symbolism 💅🏼💅🏼

(I think Choso was the one who saw that happen??) Like she’s the “reason” he “changed” and Sukuna only became abusive towards Yuji after that? Cause I feel like I remember him promising Choso he wouldn’t do stuff to Yuji and maybe he actually didn’t but then started after the stuff happened with this Woman? 👀

Idk if I’m super far off but that would maybe also explain why he really doesn’t want Gojo to get his way with reader (like Sukuna apparently succeeded in manipulating that girl, who then maybe found out that he was obsessed or something and that’s what she said to him before things escalated) cause he doesn’t want Gojo to succeed/be happy “where he failed”? Or maybe he wants to protect reader somehow because of underlying self-hatred and projection?

& Gojo was…coco for cocoa puffs, to say the least. Even in tfl, he explicitly tells the reader that the version of himself who fell in love with her was a bad guy— as we now see!

And I need everyone to be well aware that the acts are not okay. 🙏 Please, even as I wrote it I was genuinely creeped out because imagine if you had someone you didn’t know watching you & even jacking his shit to you… that is WEIRD and NASTY. Gojo being hot does NOT excuse SHIT. ^.^ Happy that I was able to express that through that disturbing chapter. These acts should not be romanticized. & while yes, I love a good dark romance, this is an example of what isn’t romantic but pure dark. It’d be different if he actually knew the reader & talked to her but he didn’t, I hope people keep tht in mind :)

NEXT, liking Sukuna is okay actually 😄 You might even feel stronger about him in those regards after the next chapter! And my foreshadowing with the babysitting was rather obvious I think! Glad you spotted it tho!! ;)

About the whole money thing. It was explained that Gojo enjoyed babysitting in general & it’s clear he loves kids & taking care of them! As such, think of it as a parallel to the reader in tfl. She had no job & was getting no action until Gojo came along w the blackmail. Through him, she saw it as a win win (blackmail aside) as she’d get to fuck hot guys & get paid— solving two of her problems at once. Now with Gojo in ftl, he saw it as him being able to take care of kids like he loves & the amount that Sukuna pays him is like an added bonus! A mere plus side, if you will. Gojo is rich but who doesn’t love extra money? Especially for something he loves doing?

& nono, the part where Sukuna was studying the apartment was to say he could tell two people lived there! It’s simply a nod to how Sukuna & Gojo didn’t know each other well enough for Sukuna to know Gojo had a roomate. :)

With Sukuna’s understanding of Gojo’s obsession…. 🌚 Let’s just say, Sukuna is not a fan of it. More will come in upcoming chapters!
