The ultimate How I Met Your Mother Finale rant
I know this has been done before, and I know I'm several years late to the party, but I don't care, so IN THIS ESSAY I WILL tell you about why this finale takes the spot as the second-worst finale in TV show history (because Game of Thrones is still, to this day, unbeatable, and it will probably stay like that forever).
But first, a little context: I've just finished binge-watching HIMYM. This binge has been going on for three days straight (my final exam of the semester is in a week and I should be studying, so the fact that the last few days were a partial waste of time makes me so mad). Second thing: I already knew how it would end, and yes, kids, it does ruin the show for you. It ruins the show so much it makes your blood boil when you rewatch certain scenes, but I will get to that.
You might want to make yourself a drink because this is a complete list of all the reasons why HIMYM's finale sucks - I'm warning you, it's gonna be looong.
It completely invalidates the entirety of season 9
This is one of the complaints people most often have with this series, and I have to agree. It would have been so much better if the last two episodes never existed, and they just showed Barney and Robin dancing at the reception after walking out of the chapel, Ted noticing Tracy and then the platform scene. "And that, kids, is the story of how I met your mother". Cut scene. Honestly, I don't get the hate people give to season 9, barring the last 2/3 episodes, especially since season 8 was so much worse (except for a few honourable mentions, like The Robin). S8 was slower, less funny, and less deep, and while the authors took a risk by making s9 happen in the span of a weekend it paid off: they took their time introducing the character of the Mother to the gang and fleshing her out. They make sure to highlight all the little ways in which Ted and Tracy are perfect for each other, and even tie up loose ends, like with the Slapsgiving episode, that was a filler but it wasn't boring to watch (although it may be problematic for different reasons, I'm not Chinese, so I can't say for sure if it's cultural appropriation or just the authors making fun of a particular movie genre).
Some episodes were arguably great: "Daisy" was amazing, and that whole fight between Marshall and Lily was so realistic and well thought out, "Sunrise" was extremely important for Ted's character development, same goes for Tracy and "How Your Mother Met Me", "Bedtime stories" was impressive, "Rally" was incredibly funny and proved once again what a beautiful character Barney Stinson is, so much so that even Robin never has doubts that he (the guy with the biggest commitment issues on the planet) will bail on her before the wedding, and says to Ted that "he always comes back". Daphne's character is super funny and the right amount of annoying, the shenanigans of the gang are well thought out and all of the characters (not just Barney) complete their arc in this season. The last two/three episodes butcher that.
Marshall and Lily
Marshall and Lily, arguably the world's most solid couple, are the only thing this God-awful finale gets right, especially Marshall, who is my second-favourite character, that finally gets everything he deserves. But what about Lily? They never mention her career after Italy, and I refuse to believe she goes back to being a kindergarten teacher as if her year in Rome meant nothing. I also refuse to think she becomes nothing but a political wife, the equivalent of Zoey, but without saving the world. We know she has three kids, but her postpartum depression is never really talked about much and they definitely had the screentime to delve into it.
Barney
Where do I even begin? Barney Stinson is, without a doubt, the best character in this series, the glue of the whole gang. I think the message they were trying to give is that, since his trauma stemmed from the absence of a father figure in his life, he could only truly heal by becoming a father as well. People also say that n°31 had to stay just a number, because who could match up with Barney Stinson? First of all, I call BULSHIT on that last point, because Robin wasn't the only girl Barney could have ended up marrying. I used to think that too, but it's just not true: that is the equivalent of saying that Barney was incapable to truly love a woman and commit to her, even after all the development he got, and that he only got one shot at love in life, and that's it. This goes against the point the showrunners try to make by having Ted and Robin end up together AND by having Tracy get with Ted in the first place: "it's never too late, you always have another chance at love, etc." And, let's face it, Barney and Robin are legendary, but Barney and Nora (hell, even Barney and Quinn!) were pretty good together too.
Second of all, if they wanted to give Barney a kid, they could have easily done that, before Barney married Robin. Barney's "redemption" starts when he gets with Robin the first time, hell maybe even when we meet James for the first time: Nora, Quinn, finding out who his father is, the episode dedicated to the lies his mum told him/finding James' father, him getting to know his own dad, etc... those are all steps along the way. The s9 episode where Barney accepts the relationship between Loretta and the reverend proves how far he's come. So why not give him a daughter BEFORE he proposes to Robin? Have him cheat on Nora/Quinn with n°31, giving him a relapse, and having him get closer to Robin while struggling to be a dad to Ellie. That would have been great.
Or, you know, don't give him children. What's the point of burning the Playbook if you're going to have him write the second edition? What's the point of having him do a complete 180 in the last few scenes and acting like having a kid is the only thing that makes him change? What's the point of doing that when the show spends entire episodes berating Marshall and Lily for "changing too much" when they have a kid?
Also, Barney is the "challenge accepted" guy. He loves his wife so much, he spent years wanting her, and then he gives up because there is no WiFi in his hotel. How does that make any sense at all? This is Barney Stinson, the "I will fly out to San Francisco and buy Lily a plane ticket", the "I will steal every girl from my best friend just to save him for Lily", the guy that wrote the Playbook (it takes effort to pull those plays off), the guy that planned for weeks his proposal, the guy that waited years to get back at the man who stole his first girlfriend, the guy that makes every night legendary... are you telling me that that guy becomes the equivalent of a bored housewife instead of living his best life while travelling the world? Come on. They don't even try to make it believable.
Ted
While watching seasons 7 and 8, I felt that Ted was becoming the worst character on the show: he was boring, depressed, basically had no good storylines, the whole thing with Victoria was pointless and inconclusive (and the whole "stop being in love with Robin" was completely out of character for her), but whatever, we could have accepted that because it passed the message that two people could be good together, without being soulmates - which, by the way, renders the TedxRobin ship pointless, because they were right for each other, but Ted and Tracy were soulmates. Him being hung up on Robin in the latter seasons is almost pathetic, and the thing he does with the locket is insane, not romantic - BUT I will say this: it can be seen in two ways, depending on who's watching. I personally like the two as friends, so I see the whole thing as a "Dahmer" situation, but I get the people who see it as a "Dobler" one and see what he did as a grand romantic gesture.
The problem, though, is that the whole TedxRobin ship gets pretty old, pretty fast: it's an annoying on-and-off thing, that should have ended with the locket. Because, yes, Ted was in a dark moment, yes, he was probably depressed, yes, he thought Robin was his only shot at happiness, but he changes during season nine! He spends entire episodes letting go of Robin, including the one where she transforms into a balloon and flies away. Ted is the good guy, ultimately. He is the guy that is genuinely happy for his best friends. In one of the deleted scenes from the finale, he meets Robin years later and says that he's so happy with Tracy he never thought about Robin in that way anymore. All of that gets thrown in the trash. Why do that? To use a Harry Potter metaphor, Ted is Severus Snape, while Barney is James Potter: the former loved the girl of his dreams with all his heart, even to the point of creepiness, but they weren't meant to be together.
Robin
This, along with the next point, is the worst of all: Robin is the worst character of the entire finale. Her relationship with Ted in season 2 is wonderful, and I say that as a full-on Barney/Robin shipper. There was never a problem in their relationship, apparently, but they then break up because they have an "expiration date" and ultimately want different things in life. Except that Ted is not her soulmate. The only times when Robin wants Ted are the times where (1) she can't have him because he's either trying to move on or (2) the times where it's convenient, for example when they become roommates again and they solve their disputes again. Around that time, we see perfectly that Ted had moved on and that the person getting hurt was Barney. It's one thing to see Ted and Robin in the finale as two people picking up where they had left off after they dated. But this is not the case.
In season 7, we have the exchange that should have put an end to any and all TedxRobin drama, and that completely invalidates whatever the writers wrote after that about the two of them: Ted declares his love - "I think you know how you feel about me now. I don't think time's gonna change that. Just tell me: do you love me?" To which she answers "No". And Ted also says later to Marshall, that he's "happy because he can finally move on".
What a load of crap.
Getting over someone is hard, believe me, I would know. And, oftentimes, it doesn't happen until we find someone else to love (and from the moment he meets Tracy, there is no one else for Ted). But by giving Ted feelings for Robin after this moment, it takes away from the beauty of it- because it's one of the most heartbreaking feelings in the world when you declare your love to someone and they don't love you back. Ted and Robin were both honest at that moment, and it was the last genuinely good exchange between them. After that, during season 8 they try to show us Ted trying to get over her (and failing) and in season 9 Ted getting over her completely. This is also weirdly paced because at the beginning of s8 both are in happy relationships with other people and there's no jealousy (which is good, because at least they weren't toxic) and they seem just friends (when Robin leaves Nick to go see him in the middle of the night, she implies that she would do it for any of her friends), but after Ted breaks up with Veronica because of Robin everything is weirdly coated in this sort of tension between the two: first Ted loves her, but she doesn't, so when he helps her by taking her to Barney's proposal ("which means my best bro in the world has given me his blessing").
And, by the way, every time they try to paint Ted as the guy that comes through for Robin after this moment, they dumb down Barney's character. And still fail to make Ted a better guy than him (see: the carousel in Central Park).
Yes, Robin and Ted have some chemistry, but it is nothing compared to what Robin and Barney have. Every time Robin is jealous of Barney, it doesn't seem like a stupid whim, just because some other child is playing with her toys (except, perhaps, during The Robin). Robin and Barney's relationship would need a whole other post, and the next time I rewatch the series I will write down all the things that make them perfect for each other, but, to me, the biggest difference between the two relationships is this: in season 6, when she's not dating either one of them, Ted accuses Robin of never making him feel needed while they were together, whereas Barney praises her for it. Those are elective affinities: that's what Barney and Robin have, and what Tracy and Ted have.
Barney and Robin have more or less the same arc: they both get over their fear of commitment and they do that with each other. Time and time again, we are told that if they're ever going to settle down, it would only be with the other. The first time they break up is honestly so stupid, and even when they are broken up, they are the best of friends, which also makes Robin's behaviour in the finale look so stupid. The way the two of them fit together is unparalleled, both in a romantic and a platonic way.
Think about it: Robin makes Barney a better man, while she makes Ted a worse one.
Also, the whole point that there are different seasons in life for everything gets thrown out the window: apparently, Ted and Robin (that were a couple that ultimately worked in their young twenties) are the same people in their forties.
But that's not even the worst part. The worst part is that the two final episodes butcher Robin's arc as well: episode 23 starts with Lily saying "I want this girl to be in our lives" and we know Robin never made other friends outside of the gang, because she didn't need to, and now she walks away from everything because of fucking Ted?? This is saying "hey, Robin was only in the group for Ted, who brought her in, and now she leaves because he's not her puppy anymore". Robin was the one that was eternally indecisive between Ted and Barney and you're telling me that three years and many many life experiences later, she's still not sure?
The point of her story is learning how to get over her fear of commitment, learning how to be there for her friends (there's an entire episode dedicated to that, and it's the one where Lily's pregnant and we meet Robin's ex-best friend in Canada), and how to balance her job and her life. Also, the way her character is treated is un-feminist and un-progressive: she becomes Ted's consolation prize. She is passive throughout s9. She cannot, ultimately, win the modern-day struggle most women have and balance out career and love life, so her true life, her "happy chapter" begins after she has already accomplished everything she wanted to and she's free for Ted. She doesn't even go back to him, she just the prize the main character wanted for all his life and only got in the end because his wife died (ONE SCENE, people, ONE SCENE!). Also, this makes Tracy the "broodmare" that gives him the kids he wanted, and his "happy family" experience before he goes to be with his one true love.
The mother
This. This makes me so mad. One whole season spent on building up Tracy's character, just for it to go to waste. It would have been so easy to screw her up, but she is hands down the best thing about s9. She's the perfect woman for Ted and the episode shot through her perspective is the sweetest. By the end, I liked her more than Robin and Lily. She was the perfect addition to their group, she fit together with them in a perfect way, and they show us the biggest moment of her and Ted's life... for what? To have her die in a few sentences? And I don't care if they shot a funeral scene, I don't care if the finale was supposed to be 40 minutes long, because, in the end, it wasn't. The scene where Ted meets her is the second most beautiful one (after Barney's proposal to Robin) and the climax of the whole show, but they ruin her... and for what? The chemistry Ted has with her, he has with no one. The joy she brings him, the way she understands him, is unlike any other. I am sure that one of the reasons they killed her off was the shock value and I hate it.
I cannot stress this enough: Tracy makes Ted a better person. When he's with Robin, Ted is "the nice guy" in the most selfish and narcissistic version of the trope. When he's with Tracy, love comes easy to Ted. Also, the scenes between the two of them are arguably the best Ted scenes of the show.
The kids' reactions (ugh)
It's not really what they say- it's the way they say it. The end of HIMYM was not supposed to be funny, even though the show is a sitcom. It was supposed to be bittersweet and beautiful, because it's the end of an era, and the writers must have known that. So, Ted finishes telling his story, reveals to the audience that their now-beloved Tracy is dead, and the reaction is: "No, ahah, you totally have the hots for Aunt Robin" (their words, not mine). Like, what the actual fuck? I cringed when Penny said that. It's tasteless and not fun at all. Even if it has been six years... It's still your fucking mum, show a little bit of sadness at the thought of her.
The reason the show ended this way
What makes me especially mad is that I know for a fact that the reason they went with this ending is that it was the original one, always intended for the show, from season 2 onwards. And, if you watch it right after s2, it makes sense. But if you consider the eight years that passed and the massive character development, then no, it's not the best possible one. So many things hadn't been decided yet back in s2, especially about Barney, Ted, and Robin, and I hate that they didn't dare to scrap their work. This ending probably had sentimental meaning to the writers, but authors have to do what's best for their characters, not themselves. It's like with GoT, in a way: I think that the authors were all too aware of the impact of HIMYM and didn't believe that their finale would live up to the expectations... which compelled them to make the worst decision possible?? Every single character is OOC during the episode. Oh, and Marshall and Lily moving in the last episode is a ripoff from Friends (or maybe a tribute? Idk). Anyway, I believe that the authors were too attached to their sentimental version of "what should have been" and didn't give the characters the endings they truly deserved.
"Life works this way" // "Life only moves forward"
Some people say that the show is realistic because that's how life works. But I call super-BS on that. That might be true, and yes, people do get sick and die (Max, Marshall's dad...) and life does go on. But then, you don't frame it the way they did. It's just bad storytelling if you do it like that. And the problem is not the structure of season 9, because the characters develop in that season. The problem isn't even the mother's death. The problem is Ted ending up with Robin because that's not life moving forward for him, that's him, doing the same thing he did in 2005, 25 (twenty-fucking-five) years before!
In conclusion, this finale is incoherent and inconclusive, and not satisfying at all. The only character that gets a good ending is Marshall: why is that? What makes his ending great? It's the fact that his character arc is respected and he finally gets what he's been working towards for more than ten years.

SICKFIC TROPES THAT MAKE ME GUSH
so we all know i love sickfics, they’re my favorite type of fanfictions (hmu if u have recs im desperate). so, in order to make a sickfic catered to my tastes, here is what i want (and tw for mentioned vomiting!) :
first of all, i REALLY love it when a character denies they’re sick and the other character(s) are kind of like but you are though. bonus pts if person a accidentally snaps at b but b is relentless
oh and when i say sickfic, the ones i prefer are LONG oneshots about like a high fever or horrible flu, the more pain the better (is that a bad thing to say)
there is something so tender about a placing a gentle hand on b’s forehead and saying something like “ur burning up”, my personal favorite. bonus pts if b leans into the “cool touch” LIKE UGH
an alternative to the previous one is a kissing b’s forehead and realizing how warm they are
the more detailed a description about a character’s ghastly appearance, the better. i’m talking pale as fuck, feverish blush, sheens of sweat, the works
for some reason, in het ships, i like it better when the man is being taken care of because it shows a weakness they typically wouldn’t show if it goes against their character (thats why how lily stole christmas is my favorite episode of himym)
if we’re being honest, i adore sickfics where its like a father/son relationship (TALKING ABOUT IRONDAD SPECIFICALLY) the dad person taking care of the son person is so sweet
FAINTING. if a character faints, you have me hooked. bonus pts if they get FOUND like hours later and dont faint in front of their caretaker (but thats okay too)
vomiting is permitted. personally, ive only thrown up three times in my life and i dont have emetophobia so it doesnt bother me and tbh i think it makes the fic better
NIGHTMARES. OMG WHEN A IS SHAKING AND CRYING FROM A FEVER DREAM AND B IS LIKE ITS OKAY IM HERE YOURE GONNA BE OKAY JUST *chefs kiss*
this doesnt happen often in sickfics i see, but b watching a sleep? its actually v sweet and romantic
CUDDLING. when a is laying on b’s lap and b is running their fingers through a’s hair UGH
i like when sickfics start in the middle of the night and a is being taken care of in the dead of night
singing of lullabies or sweet songs, very comforting and heartwarming
when a is delirious out of their mind. bonus pts if u get a confession out of it or some sad shit a has been keeping to themselves slips out I THRIVE ON THEIR ANGST AND PAIN
when b finds out that a is sick and carries them to bed bc they cant walk right—something about it just hits different
BREAKFAST OR ANY SORT OF MEAL IN BED— bonus pts if b feeds a jfc im spiraling
if the sickfic ends with a getting better, ALWAYS say something along the lines of “the fever broke” bc for some reason i like that way of describing a fever being gone
appendicitis fics are awesome even though that SHIT HURTS (ive never had it but ive seen that episode of the cartoon madeleine where she got it)
i dont like sickfics where the character is terminally ill because I MAY WANT THEM TO SUFFER BUT NOT ETERNALLY
when b drapes a blanket over a sleepy/cold a like that shit is so fucking adorable—if they give a jacket, thats cool too
when b has to take home a from a date or something cause they’re sick and being a stubborn lil bitch
any sort of touchy-feely stuff in fics will earn a 10
BE DESCRIPTIVE AS POSSIBLE. DESCRIBE A’S CONDITION. DESCRIBE B’S DESPERATE ATTEMPTS TO NURSE THEIR TRUE LOVE TO HEALTH DAMMIT
also make sure a drinks hot tea with honey at some point cause tea is delicious (and better than coffee. no, i will not take that back)
sore throats?? um yes thank you
stomach flu? yes pls
a rough cough?? okay yes i need
descriptions of the eyes are something i usually dont mind not having in sickfics but if they’re there, you get bonus pts. its stuff like “fever bright eyes” or “glassy eyes” or “bloodshot eyes” that i LOVE
make sure a gets a cold icepack or a cold washcloth on their forehead like its tender the way it’ll be placed on a sleeping a’s forehead
a’s refusal to eat bc they are either whiny asf or just cant keep shit down
bonus pts if the reason a is sick is because they were wounded previously and the wound is infected in some way
MAKE THEM DIZZY, i always get dizzy when im sick
i said this already but it needs its own bullet point—make it a long oneshot—like i want a to be sick for like a week or so
the tucking of a into bed or helping a change into comfy clothes
okay i think im done for now, but SICKFICS UGH I LOVE THEM I WISH PEOPLE APPRECIATED THEM MORE. also its the only type of fic i know how to write without sounding horrible. but pls write or recommend sickfics they’re my weakness.

Long ass post ahead. TL;DR I found an old set of questions and decided to answer them again 7 years later because why not.
1: What are you wearing?
2014: Some Shorts and a shirt I accidentally stole from my brother.
2021: Panic! at the Disco shirt and some running shorts
2: Ever been in love?
2014: Oh yes, sadly...
2021: pfft.
3: Ever had a terrible breakup?
2014: Not technically, but I once had my homecoming date hook up with another girl.
2021: hahahahahaha. Yes.
4: How tall are you?
2014: like 5 foot 1, maybe 2? I dunno.
2021: 5’4”, apparently
5: How much do you weigh?
2014: How about no...
2021: Who’s to say ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
6: Any tattoos?
2014: Yes! I got one on my left shoulder blade not too long ago. I often forget I have it, actually lol.
2021: I’m up to five, and six is planned.
7: Any piercings?
2014: I do. I have double lobe piercings, and my left ear at the top. No non-ear piercings. Those seem uncomfortable to get, tbh.
2021: Uh...double lobe, helix, forward helix, tragus, nose, and septum.
8: OTPs?
2014: Marshall and Lilly on HIMYM. I mean, I think that's what this is asking. Right?
2021: I’m still not 100% sure what this means but I’m doubling down on Marshall and Lilly.
9: Favorite show?
2014: I'm still recovering from the ending of How I Met Your Mother, but I also love Criminal Minds, and the Big Bang Theory.
2021: HIMYM, Criminal Minds, Stranger Things, and Masked Singer.
10: Favorite bands?
2014: I pretty much love anything, so I'll try to shorten it to Love and Theft, Newsboys, t.A.T.u, Beast, and Fun.
2021: My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, twenty one pilots, Maroon 5, Relient K.
11: Something you miss?
2014: Going to the park and just lying in the grass with my friends or crushes. I know, I'm Cheesy.
2021: Not having responsibilities or bills to pay.
12: Favorite Song?
2014: ...why do they even bother asking this? Tbh, “I'll Be” by Edwin McCain, and “Hello, My Name is” by Matthew West

2014: Just someone who's willing to go on cheesy dates at the park, and love me for who I am. And a Christian. Yea, I'm one of those people. Sorry...
2021: dude just someone who’s gonna stick with me.
16: Favorite quote?
2014: It's actually a verse. I love Jeremiah 29:11. It's actually part of what's tattooed on my shoulder; right below a cross.

2021: There is no meaning. I like pancakes, space, and dragons.
31: Last book you read?

2021: Europe. Specially Spain or France.
38: Last place you were?
2014: I honestly left home like twice today, to bring something to my brother at the High school, then to bring him to a friends house. He has a better social life than me.
2021: Friends place to hang out. We played Stardew then ordered wings and watched a movie.
39: Do you have a crush?
2014: Yes. See question 28 lol. Also, there's this other guy who I got close to last year, but I haven't spoken to him in weeks, and it's killing me.
2021: See guy referred to in 34, 35, and 38.
40: Last time you kissed someone?
2014: Never. I have never kissed anyone. Well, besides like a kiss in the cheek from family. Yeah...
2021: wow it’s probably been about three years.

2021: French Horn, Mellophone, and Ukulele. Still want to learn the flute.
44: Favorite piece of jewelry?
2014: My purity ring. If I forget to put it on, I can seriously feel the emptiness, and it bothers me...

45: Last sport you played?
2014: Maybe Soccer? Idk.
2021: pfft. Sports.
46: Last song you sang?
2014: “I'll Be” by Edwin McCain. But I really don't sing well, so it doesn't happen much, unless I'm alone.
2021: “You Belong with Me (Taylor’s Version)” by Taylor Swift and I 100% sang it to my dog.
47: Favorite chat up line?
2014: I don't have one
2021: It’s been 7 years and I still don’t have one.
48: Have you ever used it?

2021: Nah.
49: Last time you hung out with someone?
2014: I hung out with my future roommate before I left college yesterday.

Mother (Part 1)
Pairing: Steve Harrington x Reader
Summary: The story of how Steve met Y/N.
Warnings: slight smut
Word Count: 1,269
A/N: Steve Week Day 4: Crossover. Stranger Things meets How I Met your Mother. Characters are of legal drinking age since HIMYM basically takes place in a bar.
“All right, Harrington. Are you ready to play our favorite game?” Robin asked.
“And which game is that again?”
Robin smirked. “Have you met Steve?”
“No,” Steve said almost immediately. “The last time we played ‘Have you met Steve?’ I ended up with a drink thrown in my face.”
“Yes, but today is a new day, my young Padawan.”
“Okay, seriously, you have to at least try to stop with the Star Wars references.”
Robin raised her drink. “Do, or do not. There is no try.” Steve groaned as she downed her drink. Robin turned to you, tapping your shoulder. “Hi! Have you met Steve?”
“Um, no I haven’t,” you said to the brunette. You looked over at the guy she was talking about. “Hi Steve. I’m Y/N.”
Robin slipped away, causing Steve to roll his eyes. “I’m really sorry, Y/N. My friend over there was just playing a dumb game. You can go back to whoever you’re here with.”
“I’m actually here by myself. I just moved to Manhattan, so I don’t really know anyone yet.”
Steve slid onto the stool next to you. “Well then Y/N, can I buy you a drink?”
***
The pounding on the door woke Steve from his slumber. He groaned, rolling onto his stomach.
“Go away!”
“Not until you tell me what happened last night!” Robin shouted from the other side of the door.
Steve continued to ignore her, but minutes later Robin was leaning over him.
“What the hell!?” he shouted. “I didn’t even hear the door open.” He walked past her. “And it’s still locked! How did you get in here?”
Robin scoffed. “Please.”
“You’re terrifying sometimes. You know that, right?”
“Thank you. Now, tell me everything. You’re sad love life is my only form of entertainment since Game of Thrones ended.”
Steve sighed. “If you must know, nothing really happened.”
“Ouch, a swing and a miss.”
“I mean, I wouldn’t say that exactly.”
Robin’s ears perked up. “Oh? Do tell.”
He looked at the floor, trying to hide his smile. “I don’t know, we hit it off pretty well. Had a few drinks. Talked about random stuff. And then she gave me her number and told me to text her sometime.”
Robin clutched her chest. “Oh, my baby boy’s all grown up.”
Steve rolled his eyes, still smiling as he left his bedroom in search for breakfast.
Jonathan and Nancy were sitting on the couch, feeding each other pancakes. Ever since they got engaged, they had become insufferable. They were in a constant Honeymoon phase that was disturbing for anyone else to witness.
Steve walked into the kitchen with Robin trailing behind.
“So, are you going to see her again?” Robin asked.
“I was actually gonna text her after breakfast.”
“Woah, slow down there cowboy. You met this girl last night. You can’t text her the morning after. You’ll send off some super creepy vibes,” Robin said as she stole one of Steve’s pancakes when his back was turned.
“Well, that’s your opinion,” he said.
Nancy had overheard the conversation between Steve and Robin, and made her way into the kitchen.
“Robin’s right,” Nancy said. “It hasn’t even been a full day since you last saw her. You’ll come across as clingy.”
“Jonathan was clingy when you first met,” Steve said.
“But we met in college and lived down the hall from one another. It’s not like we could avoid each other,” Nancy responded.
Jonathan strolled over when he heard his name mentioned. “I think it’s sweet to text the next day,” he said. Nancy and Robin turned to stare at him. Jonathan shrugged his shoulders. “Steve and I can’t help it. We’re hopeless romantics, unlike you two.”
“It’s settled then. I’m texting her,” Steve said, taking his phone out of his pocket.
Robin shook her head. “It’s your funeral.”
Steve typed out an invite to lunch and sent the message, but after several hours came and went, there was no response.
“Sorry, Steve,” Nancy said as she flipped on the TV.
“Whatever. It doesn’t matter. There’s plenty of other girls in New York.”
Nancy patted Steve’s shoulder. “Hey, this’ll cheer you up,” she said, pointing at the TV. “A dog just stopped a robbery at the convenience store a few blocks from here. Oh look, he’s being interviewed!”
Steve glanced up at the TV to see your face on the screen beside the dog. “That’s her!” he shouted.
“That’s who?” Nancy asked.
“Y/N!”
“She’s a news reporter?”
“Yeah, I remember her mentioning it last night. Something about having to do the cutesy-type stories until she gets promoted.” Steve’s eyes widened. “Wait, you said this was a few blocks from here?”
“Yeah, that little store next to the pizza place we always go to.”
Steve jumped off the couch, grabbed his keys, and sprinted out the door. He pushed past all the people on the sidewalk until he finally arrived at the store.
Your eyes locked with his as he came inside. Steve waved, making you smile.
After you had finished your segment, you turned to your crew. “I’ll see you guys back at the station.”
Steve came up to you, his hands in his jacket pockets.
“What are you doing here?” you asked.
“Oh, I just wanted to see the dog that saved the day. Thought maybe he could sign something for me.”
“You’re out of luck; Pickles isn’t giving out any autographs today.”
Steve clicked his tongue. “Darn, that’s too bad.”
You giggled. “What are you really doing here?”
“I wanted to see you again. I texted you this morning, and I thought I blew it by coming off as too clingy. I mean, Nancy and Robin said I should’ve waited to text you, but Jonathan told me to go for it. But then I saw you on the news and—”
You put your hand up to stop him. “Take a breath, Steve.”
“Right. Sorry.” He scratched his head and released a deep breath. “Do you want to go to lunch with me? Actually, I guess it would be dinner at this point.”
You beamed at him. “I’d love to.”
***
“And that, kids, is how I met your mother,” Steve said to your twin babies who had fallen asleep in his arms during the story.
“You know they can’t understand you yet, right?” you chuckled, leaning against the door frame.
Steve smiled up at you. “I know. I’ll just have to tell them again when they’re older.” He laid both babies in their respective cribs and slowly closed the door, following you out of the room.
You intertwined your fingers with his as you dragged him into your shared bedroom and pulled him down onto the bed. Steve was hovering over top of you, your hands resting on his shoulders.
“When they’re older, and you tell them about our first date, you should probably leave out the bit at the end,” you told him.
“Do you mean this part?” Steve pressed a slow kiss to your lips before pulling away. “Or this?” He trailed more kisses across your jaw towards you ear to whisper into it. “Or what about this?” He pinned your wrists above your head with one hand while the other hand wrapped your leg around his hip.
“Steve…” you whispered, before he collided his lips with yours once more.
He released you momentarily to undress himself as you stared up at him.
“Definitely do not tell them about any of this part.”
He chuckled before hovering over you once more, speaking softly against your lips. “As you wish, Mrs. Harrington.”

honestly i find it funny how all through my preteens and teens (like 12-18... or like whenever the first time i watched 10 things i hate about you and first watched shows like how i met your mother, was)..... i always wanted that Big Public Romantic Gesture™️ like patrick singing “i love you, baby” to kat in 10 things, or someone confessing their love for me in a tv interview or whatever (i’m pretty sure this happened on like multiple shows/movies i watched growing up, but i can’t remember which ones)....
or i wanted some Weird/Quirky Romantic Gesture Which I Now Realise Is Borderline Fucking Creepy Or Hella Yikes™️.... like ted mosbey’s rain dance to keep robin in nyc in season 1 of himym or his stealing of the Smurf Penis™️/blue french horn for robin..... or basically half the weird fucking shit that ted did to women...... or barney’s “the robin” or whatever play from his playbook to get robin to marry him..... or god knows what else was on the shows/movies i watched lmao... but they’re the ones that stand out the most to me.
but now i realise that if someone did any of those things to me.... some video game boss level music would start playing in my head as my anxiety to not be seen would be like “OH GOD. NO. WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING, YOU FUCKING DIPSHIT???? OH GOD! OH GOD! OH GOD! OH GOD! ABORT MISSION!!!!! ABORT MISSION!!!!!!!” like it’d be the most mortifying thing for me now to have someone publicly sing a love song to me in front a load of people!!!! like Y I K E S. i won’t say yes.
and if some person was like “oh hey i performed a rain dance to make it rain so that you couldn’t leave town!!!!” or “i made up this super elaborate plan to make you fall in love with me and marry me!” i’d hitch my ass the next (idk i guess) uber ride away from that person.... because y’all are crazy and creepy and that ain’t working.
like why are these things so over-romanticised in tv shows/movies etc??? like y’all they’re pretty yikes for both parties if they haven’t bothered to discuss them between each other... or just yikes in general anyway if you barely even know the person, like you met them ONCE and did THAT (i’m looking at ted moseby’s rain dance for that one).... like hmmmm youve got some weird control issues there..... buddy..... and you need therapy for them. miss me with that shit.
like why are these things really heavily pushed at women as like “the pinnacle of romance” or some shit? why must women “yearn” to have a public confession of love via a love song being sung to them by some random dude they’ve talked to like twice (which was 10 things I hate about you) or have some creepazoid like ted moseby be all like “oh i stopped the weather for you! so you’d be here with me!!!” or “i stole the smurf penis for you!!!” etc etc etc (and the same goes for barney’s “the robin” play tbh)????
and why are women expected to like that???? when they’ve basically been fucking stalked (let’s be real, that’s both barney AND ted and then one of the guys on love, actually).... or kinda publicly harassed (which is kat & patrick or probably a load of the over the school PA system confessions of crushes on tween/teen shows).... like i mean this in the sense that the feeling isn’t mutual obviously. like when it’s mutual (which some of them were... say when jake ryan said he liked miley stewart (or was it hannah montana??? someone refresh me) in an interview in hannah montana like season 2???) it wasn’t as creepy or weird, it was fine. and that’s what i wanted, i suppose. the mutual one. although stupid little preteen/teenage me found the unsolicited gestures ~cute~ as well.
but now i realise just how creepy the behaviours of the ted’s and barney’s were and other unrequited lovers on the tv shows/movies i watched when the weird (~hopeless romantic~) dude did a Big Public Romantic Gesture™️ or the Weird/Quirky Romantic Gesture Which I Now Realise Is Borderline Fucking Creepy Or Hella Yikes™️.. like I DO NOT WANT THAT SHIT AT ALL. and even if the feelings are mutual, i don’t want it. why showcase it like that? like ugh. anyway.
#life#about me#shut up ilona#relationships i guess#ilona whines about her life to her followers lol#but seriously though#all of those things are Y I K E S™️ to me now lol#like id bolt for my life like a deer in headlights if i guy pulled a ted moseby#or patrick from 10 things#or barney stinson#or whoever the actual stalker guy was on love actually#like no!!!!! theyre creepy and manipulative!!!!#and that aint cute preteen/teeange me

2017 IN REVIEW
Last 2016 I also did a review on my year, it was just a short recollection of my “best of 2016”. But this year I’ll try to expound on my year a little bit more. As you all might not know, I do multiple journaling, one for my daily recollections, a planner for my to do list and schedules, and another for my notes and lessons it’s basically just a notebook for random quotes and thoughts. This time I’ll try to share with you how this year went so far. I’ll share to you my best and worst of 2017, no frills. Just so you know this blog started last year and I haven’t been able posting that much. But this year I liberated myself, I took this year to find myself and I think I did- in a way lol. 2018 get ready for a wiser me!
Recap, last time I decided to take up my MBA which I didn’t by the way because of work-related reasons. lol so that’s that. haha
JANUARY:
I decided to cut all my hair off and it was the shortest haircut I ever had. I needed to learn how to put on wax and fix my hair which I barely did even if I had my hair long and that was one of my misconception about cutting your hair really short that you won’t get to fix it. I was going for the Audrey Hepburn look but ended up looking a lot like Eleven from Stranger Things instead. So basically, I had to put wax on my hair and beat my face with makeup just so I can still look like a girl with no cancer. It was one of the most liberating things I’ve ever done this year – I took off one of the things that defined me and made someone new again and not even the shiny and new kind. I was naked and free.
Had my first trip out-of-town for work reasons, of course, we were bound for Subic to visit the BCB branch. I also organized and hosted my first media event. and it went well – one of my best accomplishments at work. Next to coordinating a TV feature for “Taralet” – a travel tv show with Andi Eigenmann. They were late but it was okay. Then had my first wine event at Speakeasy – that went okay as well.
Binge watching on Narcos for this month. hahaha and
And for the last day of my January, I was able to go to Sto. Tomas/Mt. Cabuyao for lunch at Cafe in the Sky with the officemates and bosses. It was my first time there, the view was to die for but the food was substandard. But I’ll come back for the view, and I did 11 months later. Dan turned 21 this year and we had Japanese Buffet at BCC.
FEBRUARY:
for February one highlight of this month is that I had dinner with AC at Hill Station and he gave gifts like a hard case for my MacBook Air, a Lang Leav book collection among other stuff (Thank you AC!) and waited for Angela to celebrate her birthday and blow her candles. 2 good friends visited me at work today Chad & AC what are the odds? we all ended up having drinking games. I was honestly mostly drunk this month. drinking with bosses & friends and I guess this is what it’s like to work in a brewery. lol
I also had the chance to organized a staycation for bloggers at the Villa Cordillera and hosting at The Other Office. Food was great but the staycation was a bit creepy I admit haha. and It was my first time to see and feed a dear so that was different. and for this’ month’s travel bumming around in ELYU for a day with friends. and squeezed in a blogger activity at Sugar Artisan.
For Valentine’s Day I was working and hosted my first ever four-course meal and craft beer pairing – and it was damn cold that day. Hosted Larry Guevara a famous bartender for a guest bartending at Speakeasy.
“I’m Drunk, I Love You” with Cati & Jen. I cried! haha. and I still have to post my review and commentaries for this film cause it was so good.
MARCH:
Micah & I celebrated our birthday together on the 14th at @ Monterazas for bbq, wine, and smores with friends. On the 17th AC planned a surprise dinner together with my family and friends. I cried so much cause I was unprepared and I was ugly hahaha. and on the 18th Chad and Micah surprised me again at work! they gave me a box of 23 cream puffs and a watch from Chad. then after that, we hangout had takeout and movies with friends. And back at the office, I had another surprise! they gave me 2 bottles of mead from sir Ar, messages from the BCB team, cake and wine and all things nice. This month was loaded with surprises, I just feel so blessed. and thinking about it 2017 ain’t so bad at all.
For a Blogger event, we went to try out Joie de Vivre for a blogger meet up and hosting the place had a great view. and Ma’am Sheryll hosted her first ever Study Circle at the Library.
Logan, Kong, Beauty & the Beast and Power Rangers with the squad. Not my kind of film but this is the most month I went to the movies. But nothing beats “English Only, Please” and “Ang Kwento Nating Dalawa”, Sana, Dati” and “Sakaling Hindi Makaraking” at CAP and meet the director & bought postcards and stole posters hahaha.
For work I hosted a brewed and BBQ party, it went super well but the cops kept driving by cause it was too late and noisy lol. but yeah friends were there to support me so yeah It was good.
For family travel, we went to Vitalis Villa in Santiago, Ilocos. A day of learning how to swim with mom.
APRIL:
Went to Sagada with friends this month, I tried spelunking @ Sumaging Cave for the first time. Visited Mt. Kiltepan and had lunch at Guaia Cafe where they shot “That Thing Called Tadhana” (and yes I’m that Filipino indie film freak for sappy love stories), bonfire & boodle fight @ Lake Danum but nothing beats going there for the first time alone and experiencing the place and people. It is truly a place for healing.
This month blogger activity we had a food crawl organized by Chino and it was a success I was able to host them at the Brewery and Speakeasy as well but sadly I wasn’t able to join them. For work I hosted bloggers for Air Asia from Davao I think, anyways that was that.
“Lion” was this month’s favorite and “Eternal Sunshine on a Spotless Mind”. started watching the “Newsroom” this as recommended by my officemates and surprisingly it was good and I enjoyed it.
For this month’s family travel we visited the Grape farm at Bauang, Luna for the “Bahay na Bato” and Back to San Luis Del Mar, Bauang for an afternoon swim. We ate pizza and drank fresh coconut juice on the side of the road and it was cool.
MAY:
This month’s blogger event was an invitation at a spa opening. Me and Micah took the liberty to have a body scrub and bleaching – it was both our first time to experience it. I was okay. Published my first blog post after a long while “Don’t Think, Just Jump”
For work I organized a video shoot for BCB’s Aniversary, and the video was done by Hiromi Umatsu and his team. He was really good and we connected with the films and likes. This month I made a friend.
13 Reason’s Why was this month’s binge-watching series. which gave me nightmares by the way. The series was too heavy. and started to watch “How I Met Your Mother” again just to move on from “13 Reasons Why” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” was okay. I kinda find it lame, to be honest. but It was funny lol. Other movies are, “Liberal Arts”, “Diary of a Teenage Girl”
Dad had a wedding exhibit at the mall this month. And for Dad’s birthday month and we had Tepanyaki @Hamada Restaurant, BCC. and surprised him with a cake at the Cafe. Cati, my friend also celebrated her birthday today, but we celebrated with kids at a church it was a nice outreach celebration.
This month’s adventure was at San Garbrielle’s Tangadan Falls, I went cliff diving thrice by the way I wish someday I can do it without a life vest. The habal-habal ride back to the main town was exhilarating, and it reminded me a lot about Baler.
JUNE:
For blogger activity, we visited the workshop at “Everything is Pine”, It was far but the view of the place was too good. I wanted to live there. For another event, we had a hosting at Zola, Dropout and one from Il Padrino. We’ve been basically just eating this month.
Still, binge-watching HIMYM and I’m done! “Moonlight” had cool take to a coming-out film. “Before I Fall” was okay. and for my first Koreanovela -“Descendants of the Sun” gahh I fell in love and gave all the feels.
A puppy visited us to work. and for this month’s event. BCB turned 3 – I felt like shit this day. I was so stressed, and annoyed. but yeah there we’re problems but it went okay in the end.
Had dinner at BCC for Father’s Day.
And for thrills and adventure, we went to Pugad Adventure with the bloggers. We tried out the ziplines & giant swing. I ALMOST DIED! then swam the whole afternoon. It was pretty chill.
JULY:
Still, on food assignments for blogger activities this time it was at The Camp – from Sala, Hardin, One-Sick-Damn- Joint. food!! and for Social Media Day we had a staycation at the Forest Cabin, this activity was super fun wine, food, games & friends. I needed this!! What I enjoyed the most was the bathtub. Can’t wait to have one of those. haha and, Cafe by the Ruins finally had its last Caniao it was a sad event actually.
Work has been rocky since June, but I was able to host other TV feature for BCB. Its been really slow and I’ve been working with BCB Cebu already and I was bound to Cebu for 10 days for its opening. I took the liberty to work hard on Cebu I’ve been beating myself more the 8hrs a day for the media hosting and grand opening. And I would go out drinking and have Karaoke with them until the sun is up. And in the afternoon I would go for a dip in the pool cause thank God they got me an Airbnb with a pool and it was near the site. and before anything else, I went around the city alone, rode a habal-habal from place to place. I liked this version of me that was carefree. I knew what made me happy – what made me. me. I really did love my own company, that I didn’t feel much alone when I was there. I learned to live, cook and care for myself. I was happy there.
And I did stand up comedy workshop with blogger friends and the next day It was my first time to put it to the test and I was so nervous but liberating to make fun of yourself in front of a crowd, it was the longest 3 minutes of my life and Thank God they laughed!. This month I was able to tick another box on my bucket list.
Also Mom’s birthday month! dinner as per usual on our favorite korean place -Wood Nymph haha.
Finally watched “Miracle in Cell No. 7” -I cried my eyes out! “Okja” did the same thing. watched “Kita Kita” in SM Cebu alone and cried again but I didn’t mind.
AUGUST:
Now back to my city, friends welcomed me home and we had dinner @ Slaughter. nothing fancy but the food was always great. I was able to meet a lot of my friends this month, I had coffee and beer with Janine, Jerrilyn and Zandra. Had dinner and wine with one of my favorite human Tom- we catch up and shared our sentiments in life. We just missed each other. I’m super proud of him!
Enrolled for Open University for an MA in Development Communications. Lunch at Canto with an officemate that is a good friend. and celebrated Paul’s birthday. this all happened in one day.
“Rebel without a Cause” was this month’s film. “Everything, Everything” made me kilig lol “To the Bones” was good as well. “100 Tula para kay Stella” got me crying real bad on the last part.
For this month’s adventure Micah and I tried to travel alone for the first time ever. bus ride after bus ride, and jeep and a tricycle we finally arrived in Batangas! Thank’s to AC for hosting us at Club Balay Isabel, we stayed there for 2 nights. he gave a tour of the resort, took tons of bikini pictures, and pool day all day. It was the life. a break from the stress. It was a good day.
SEPTEMBER:
Baguio day! Spent this day with my forever bestfriend Micah, breakfast at Cafe Adriana, did our blogger duties, fixed our schedules, made plans for The Local Folke and visited sir Jogin at 18 BC. We can feel that this month is going to be busy for the both of us. With school and work, friends, other projects, traveling and blogging I might lose it lol. We decided to make The Local Folke a community and planned for a gathering of creatives. The activity went super well, we had brunch at Arca’s Yard and Chiara bought the Raw Table and shared it with us. It was super inspiring.
Micah and I attended Maxine’s Lipstick line Launch at the Basement. The lipsticks were really nice, I really like the choices of shades. Had a few drinks, met and made friends. Climb Mt. Ulap for tree planting with Chiki (turistaboy) and Kuya A (ATravels), and it was raining super hard, so we decided to descend early had a fellowship, met new friends, it was a cool experience, no regrets.
This month’s film was “Boyhood” it was pretty mundane nothing much except you get to see the actors grow up on screen which was cool. Did a movie marathon Wes Anderson, Rushmore, The Shark and the Wale, The Darjeeling Limited, The Royal Tenenbaums, Aquatic Life with Steve Zissou, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Moonrise Kingdom. I’m a super fan of this works and how it is curated, I’m super in love with his style everything!
OCTOBER:
This month was both a good and a bad month but nevertheless, I was always productive. We have our first solo hosting of the Gathering for The Local Folke at the Other Office, we were only expecting 10 attendees but ended up hosting 15! it was hard, tiring and consuming but we were able to pull it off and It was all worth it.
For work, I coordinated another magazine feature BCB at Travel Now Magazine. and we had a Halloween Party, us at the office took the liberty to dress up as well, I went for that 40’s tattooed pinup look. This is my first time to dress up for Halloween haha. Anyways this month’s food highlight is Aytron & Ebenezer’s sinigangan na Bangus is the bomb!
Chino had an art exhibit this month together with his dad at the Baguio Museum, we were all there to support this milestone of his. He was good and damn the guy can paint. We also attended the 4th year Aniv of The Other Office -the birthplace of The Other Blogger and played mini golf. it was my first time to watch fireworks up close it was breathtaking – magical even!
Wonder Woman on cable. started How To Get Away with Murder. lol It was really exciting to watch and mind puzzling. “What Happened To Monday” was a good futuristic action movie, really nice plot twist.
My slowest month yet, no travel but I was able to hang out a lot with friends and workmates.
NOVEMBER:
This month was sht to be honest. It was the worst. I resigned to a job that I love doing because my morals are being challenged and I simply had to choose. I wrote a two pages resignation letter and that was the bravest thing I’ve ever done this month. But I just felt like I had to do it. and for my last media hosting, CNN Philippines. -my finish strong. For a week I was depressed, I cried and drink and all that stuff. It was hard turning over, given the time. I felt powerless.
The day after my last day I was bound for MNL for a Blogapalooza @City of Dreams, It was my first time inside of a casino and I tried my luck as well. It was a bonding experience, the breakfast buffet at Nobu Hotel was really good. and the room interior was nice and clean. Right after the event we took the liberty to look around the city we visited the National Museum of Anthropology and I enjoyed so much that I didn’t even felt hungry, I was so amused by the artifacts and stories behind it.
Rewatching “That 70’s Show” my all time favorite show. Had a date with my brother, we watched Thor Ragnarok, we went thrift shopping, strolling and taking random pictures around the city. It was a good bonding day cause I barely had time with him.
This month I started jogging, and had wine with my favorite person -Micah and ma’am Ninj at Arca’s Yard and for the gathering, it was super intimate, honest. and I love that my brother was there and he was really good. Everything was so good, the people, the sharing, the love. everything. I tried to declutter and fix my things. I threw some things and kept some things. This month was hard.
DECEMBER:
December was light – It was a very light month and super jampacked. but still, there are ups and downs. We were able to do a 3-day garage sale, finished my first semester of my masters. Mom got bitten by one of our cats and I have to accompany her get her shots. We lost two baby kittens this month and it was devastating, we cried a lot.
We hosted the “Towards One Blogosphere” a blogger event for local Baguio Bloggers. the event went okay. after that WTB invited me to come with them for an exhibit at Oh May Gulay, it was my first time to go and I was able to meet the artist as well. I like these guys a lot! they’re so cool!
Had Christmas dinner with the friends and gave my gifts. and for our gathering that almost didn’t happen, we had a picnic and it was lovely, we’re happy with the outcome. Micah surprised me with a Where To Next Planner and right after we had life talks at 2600 while we eat chicken haha it was really fun and lovely day. and for Christmas day we went to Baguio City Jail to give out letter and toiletries among other things.
Climb Mt. Kalugong with my ex-officemate that is now a really good friend of mine. I also went to Winaca Village, I simply walked around and I relearn how to drive again yey! then on the same day, we drove to ELYU for food and drinks, we did a set and snuck on a beach hostel to drink. It was a very spontaneous experience with my college friends and best friends. It was pretty cool. and for my last travel up north, we went to Mt. Cabuyao, for sunset but it was too cloudy however the city lights got me – it was so gorgeous, I liked how cold it was I fell in love with everything about it. I’m coming back here every year. We had bonfire and beer, and habal-habal on our way back to the main road. Also received my camel backpack from Ebenezer! It was worth the wait haha.
And I was able to finally have my closure and it gave me all the right feelings. I was me again, I felt a lot lighter. I’m happy again. and I can truly say that now.
xoxo

Oops, sorry. I saw a post in The Middle tag like this: "im just gonna say, the show “the middle” is a shitty version of the much better show “malcolm in the middle”, its a complete rip off and its worse." And I just tried several times right now to discuss it. I sent you the other messages because it's too long.
Here’s what else the person said: “like im sure you can see how “how i met ur mother” stole from friends, so like apply those same critical thinquing skills to these two shows and u’ll find it – also there’s zero things objectively original about the middle so you can call it original all u want but it just ainttttttt its a medicore family comedy with flat characters that anyone can project their personalities onnnnn, like like 90% of sitcoms, the middle literally stole the fucking name.”
“I have watched a lot of the middle and all of malcolm in the middle and it’s very obvious you’re a huge fan of the latter, so i guess to describe it you, the middle ripped off malcolm in the middle in the same way “how i met your mother” ripped off “friends”, malcolm in the middle was about a family that only fit in with each other (a more true to life sort of family where the house is constant mess/money’s tight/siblings doing stupid shit with each other/etc) and how they dealt with being the
freaks of the neighborhood/school and thats not the set up of most family-based shows, malcolm in the middle was really unique in that sense cause it showed what houses with 3+ kids are really like instead of the usual TV version, and then the middle decided to copy that right down to the format of one of the family members narrating to the audience/basically having the same name so w/e dude.. like that it’s clear that the middle was the very least “heavily inspired” by malcolm in the middle.”
Sorry for all those messages with quotes. I searched twitter with the words Malcom In The Middle rip off and there was a good bunch of posts saying that The Middle’s a rip off. There wasn’t a lot, since it only took me less than 5 minutes to read all of them. A portion of them said they liked it anyway. but it makes me feel bad. Is The Middle really that unoriginal? Obviously they have to be Malcom in The Middle fans, but I thought they just had similar concepts. Was it a rip off? :/
And I’m watching an episode right now, the Wind Chimes, but I can’t enjoy thinking that maybe Malcom In The Middle is just like that and did it first? Are all The Middle characters fake and unoriginal and is the dialogue and humor and everything unoriginal and copied and not unique? :(
to start out with, i’ve never seen malcom in the middle (well, one episode, but i just didn’t like it much) so i can’t sit here and tell you if it’s similar or not. i’m sure it is though. all sitcoms are similar. they all have similarities. especially the ones that have a similar setting.
i really wound’t worry about this person, anon. this is a very subjective view and even if it is copied, that doesn’t mean it’s any less good. personally, i don’t think himym stole from friends. yes, they’re both set in new york and are about friends in their 20s/30s, but they’re still different. friends doesn’t own that story line
honestly this argument can be argued for a lot of shows. did family matters steal the name from family ties? did parks and rec steal the style from the office? any show about a blended family must have stolen from the brady bunch. that 70s show was made in the 90s and 2000s, but set in the 70s. happy days already did that with being filmed in the 70s, but about the 50s. take any sitcom and you’re going to find something similar with an other.
i can’t tell you if it’s a rip off or not, but i’d say no. having similar stories doesn’t mean it’s a rip off and it doesn’t make it bad. i’d also say that the middle characters are pretty original, but that’s just me. the main thing is that you like it. and if you do, don’t worry about a mitm fan that thinks that show owns every trope they used that i’m sure has already been done
