I often wake early. Sometimes, I feel like I'm more responsible than the sun.

One morning, I awoke and walked to the shore. As I looked up, I could tell that I interrupted the conversations between the stars. Embarrassed, I looked out to the horizon. That's when I saw her. Mother Yemeya. She lifted her hand to me. She was far away, but the waves carried her gentle voice to my ears.

"Keep me in your heart, son. They will take you away from me. They will curse your breath and whip your consciousness until you can only survive on their air and contort to their cages... but keep me in your heart, son. They will take your horizon and give you land that will bear strange fruit, but keep me in your heart, son. You may forget my name, my voice, my songs... but keep me in your heart, son."

"How do I do that, Mama? How can I keep you in my heart when all of those things are taken away from me?"

"You will, because they will not know that you have a heart. They won't even think to look for one. This is where you must keep me. Keep me in your heart, son."

"Okay, Mama."

The waves stopped. Silence.

"Mama, I'm scared."

"Me too, son. Me too. But keep me in your heart."

Just the presence of a righteous Black Woman makes me warm inside & kicks my spirits in gear. Y'all are genuine, funny, intuitive, influential & quick-witted.

Everyone learns from you, because you are the Mother of the Earth. Women like Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, Judith Scott, Assata Shakur & Nia Long all have that motherly cadence that grabs you & leaves you more cultured than before. 

A Black woman's glance used to intimidate me in my adolescence, but I smartened up around 17. I realized the power of those eyes. The essence. The history of royalty.

The Orisha/Yoruba overtones I just get from y'all.

Whenever I kiss a black woman's cheekbone, I have to pry myself off at 1 peck. I could just do it till the cows come home lol, but your boundaries are to be respected.

That's why everyone wants to be you. You are the measuring stick of everything graceful. Your regality is a catalyst for the unwarranted ego trips of other people. They can't defeat you.

It may sound sappy, but other women take several backseats to you, as far as I'm concerned. You are unmatched.

Cougar Prophecy And Symbolism

Whether the Cougar appears in dreams, visions, waking life or synchronicities, it is a sign and message that you are tapped into your divine feminine power. It is a sign that you are very protective mother figure or teacher for somene. The Cougar is a prophecy that if you're fighting with men at this time, you are already coming out on top. You will not allow just anyone into your sphere of influence. The Cougar reminds you that if things feel heavy right now…soon this tide will change. You are protected.

Your grandmother's or mother's prayers are working and you can expect miraculous outcomes. Release your stresses. Don't allow yourself to slip and fall into being overstimulated. Lean on your female guides. Yemeya, Oya, Oshun, Quan Yin and the like. They are standing guard around your home due to a threat to you and your family. They are with you and they will not allow it to prosper. Their love for you runs deeper than blood. You are promised victory in something you are worried about. The Cougar will stand with you in it. You'll see.

Broken into 3 "Acts" with an "Epilogue" section located in the rear of the gallery, this collection of works is a visual metaphor for the journey of the Black American, from pre-colonial times to contemporary times to a futurist Afro-topia. This is not simply about Blacks in space (although it is that too). This is about using culture and history to imagine an unseen and prosperous future. Imagining how the future looks provides mental armor for the now. This show is about adaptation and change in the face of danger. Our imagination is what makes us human.
