Day 1 (07/30) - Arrival

At dinner time, the visiting campers arrive and eat with their hosts. The newbies who haven't visited before get sorted into Cabins/Cohorts, with whom they will be participating in the activities.

If we (CHB) are hosting, the Romans go into whichever Cabin is closest to their most recent godly ancestor. Thus, the children and legacies of Aphrodite/Venus go into Cabin 10, as do the children/legacies of the other love deities.

If CJ is hosting, we get sorted into Cohorts, using the method for probatios, i.e. we are spoken for by a full member of the Legion or by a Greek camper who's spent enough time at CJ. The definition of 'enough time' is a bit vague, but the Campers who go to NRU, Jackson Smith (who's got both Greek and Roman godly ancestors) and Yelaina all count as having had enough time. However, the first time we did it, back in 2012, lots were drawn to sort the Greek Campers into Cohorts

After dinner, there's time to unpack and hang out.

“average demigod goes on 3 quests a year” factoid actualy just statistical error. average demigod goes on 0 quests per year. Percy Jackson, who lives in New York & goes on over 10,000 quests each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

Well, Yelaina hasn't graduated yet, but that's cos she WASN'T YET TEN during those wars

-one of the strongest demigods ever who's saved the world like at least 3 times, fought multiple gods & titans and WON (and is a tartarus survivor)

-the literal main architect of OLYMPUS who's also saved the world multiple times (also tartarus survivor)

-THE lord of the wild who's also close friends with the first two (and has helped save the world multiple times)

-an emo kid from the 1930s who again helped save the world and is also a tartarus survivor (TWICE)

-a son of apollo who survived tartarus with nothing but cargo shorts and sheer will (pun intended)

-the main designer and builder for the argo II, also the first hephaestus kid to have fire powers since hundreds of years ago (did i mention killed gaea? no? yeah he did that too)

-a girl who somehow charmspeak-ed gaea into falling back asleep (also side note daughter of super famous actor because why not)

-pretty much everybody is a two-time war veteran

-THE GOD APOLLO who just sometimes comes down to visit in the form of a teenage boy

-did i mention dionysus, god of wine madness and theatre

-also chiron, trainer of pretty much every greek hero ever

yknow i think we as a fandom underutilize the fact that Nico is the only mortal character in the Riordanverse who can tangibly interact with ghosts. Like it's not even a Hades kid thing. It seems to only be a Ghost King thing, cause he couldn't interact with ghosts before he became Ghost King (Bianca's hand turned to mist when it got close to him) and Hazel notes that the lares just pass through her while Nico can drag them around by the ear.

saw this comment on a tiktok about the apollo kids singing songs on the half-blood bus when all of camp half-blood was driving to meet percy before the battle of manhattan. and i'm actually so in love with the idea of all of the campers singing upbeat songs before heading into battle. boasting each other up. getting in the right headspace to give their all.

Having lived at Camp, it's a good reflection of what the life's like.

I've spent 3 days following 7 & 8yo demigods as they find the perfect rock, spent hours sorting & polishing weapons for ppl, only for them to give up and move onto something completely different, and you should SEE Yelaina's Cabin! Her random organization is INSANE

I see so many people talking about the Hawaiian shirt Nico is in at the end of HoO but not the fact that he wore it because his only other option was a shirt with the Confederate flag or maybe that was a fever dream.

Those books were crazy cs Rick just says shit like wdym the Confederate army was the Romans? wdym Hitler and Nico are brothers? wdym George Washington, Harriet Tubman, and Amelia airheart are all demigods? what?

I asked Yelaina abt this, and she said it was actually another demigod who was tutoring Percy in Spanish. I guess Rick changed it to Leo bc he's a more familiar Spanish-speaking demigod? And, as someone else says, he doesn't re-read so he forgot Leo was missing at the time.

This is a Hypnos worship blog but because I very much appreciate his twin lemme just say ‘Unrelenting one’ is by far my fav epithet for Thanatos. Like yeah, death doesn’t stop. No one can escape it. It’s unrelenting.

Compared to my favourite of Hypnos ‘Soft eyed’ it’s a perfect contrast for the perfect two sides of the same coin like twins.

Okay I might be crazy but I just realized something. So we know that the battle of manhattan was in the middle of August and we know that Hazel arrived at camp Jupiter in September.

Which means that the issues with Thanatos and the doors of death started almost immediately after the battle.

So what I think is that when Hades brought up a bunch of skeletons to fight against the monsters, he inadvertently opened some entrances/exits to the underworld which made it easier for Thanatos to be captured and the doors of death to be chained.

Can we just talk about the fact that Percy saw this weird, terrified, helpless, homeless, bullied, unloved kid and thought "yep, I like this one, I think I'll keep him"? He was totally fine with having no other friends, totally fine with becoming a target himself, if it meant Tyson had a friend. (We'll keep it simple by not talking about how things develop over the rest of the book.) I think it's another instance where the theme of family and chosen family is instrumental in the story. Percy is a very specific kind of leader, because he makes his chosen family a place where the little guy comes first and foremost, always. He doesn't want friends if they're the kind of person to kick someone when they're down.

I'll say it over and over again until everyone gets sick to death of hearing it: THE CORE THEME OF PJO IS FAMILY.
