Tom Cruise 30 Day Challenge Day 8: Underrated Movie

The Mummy (2017)

YEEEEAHHHHHH I bet none of you all saw this one coming. Listen this is toted as being one of the worst movies Tom did and like... IT'S NOT.

It's just a fun popcorn film, It's really not as bad as people say. It's a dark comedy with clear lines on the dark and comedy aspects of it.

It's fun, perfect movie to watch with friends. Is it a 5/5 star movie? Maybe not? Is it an average movie, yes, which means it is NOT the worst.

In regards to your recent post about redemption arcs and deserving redemption and all that: I’m fairly certain that the vast majority of people have heard that there’s a Bible story where a guy named Jonah is swallowed by a whale or whatever. What I believe most people probably aren’t aware of is the rest of the story, being that Jonah went and told the city he’d been told to go to in the first place (and hadn’t, resulting in the whale thing) that if they didn’t repent God would strike them down, and then they repented and God didn’t strike them down, which Jonah got really super angry about! He went and sat outside the city watching for it to be destroyed, and also dramatically asked God to strike him down several times because he was so angry he said he’d rather die. That to say, I find it funny in a way that the common (specifically western) culturally/raised Christian-but-not-practicing perspective is the same thing that the Bible refuted there. That whole ‘even though they changed their ways I still want them to suffer’ thing. I’m not so fantastic at putting the thoughts together but there is certainly a great deal of irony in that, methinks.

Yeeeeahhhhhh there's a lot of cherry-picking in general when it comes to how religion is applied to cultural bias. And certain themes about punishment in Christianity are much more pervasive (Hell, smiting, Original Sin, Jesus Suffering For Your Sins, etc.) than the story you mentioned (which, you're right: beyond the whale part, I'd never heard of the rest before. Though I was also not raised Christian). So I can see why the latter gets drowned out and ignored.

That's an interesting point and story though! Thank you for sharing.

I've been HCing that he shaves his arms and chest because he's self conscious about them and that he just likes to have a "clean" shave for his face (I used quotes bc of the damn sideburns wjnkfsdcx). Definitely wanna draw him with like a chin strap/maybe a goatee kinda thing going on (maybe like an inverted version of Leon's??) or something at some point

Also explaining Tulio’s story a bit more:

Tulio is a Spanish missionary that got stranded at sea when a hurricane takes them down. He is extremely repressed and trapped in a loveless arranged marriage. So upon finding out his wife is pregnant finds any excuse to escape for awhile. he doesn’t really know he’s gay he just thinks it’s his mission to spread the word of god and that is his priority blah blah blah you get it.

Bruno and Tulio are in their 30s when they meet Tulio is older

Bruno has always been mentally ill. In my mind younger Bruno is more feisty and adventurous but repeated traumas make him retreat into himself after Tulio dies and he starts performing increasingly more intricate rituals to relieve anxiety brought on by visions. The more he represses them though it just makes the involuntary visions scarier and more painful so he is constantly on edge
