the gen z version of boomers thinking ai generated photos are real is those accounts on tiktok who post selfies of random old people & then pull photographs from online archives & make up stories as if they’re the old person and it’s their photograph. saw one today w over a million likes pretending that a photo of 2 anonymous men taken in the 1910s was taken in 1962??? w a made-up story abt being a gay man and seeing his boyfriend get hate-crimed to death…everyone in the comments was eating it up….like i’m sorry but i don’t think u lot can make fun of boomers anymore this is embarrassing xx

Happy New Year from the early 1910s! Warm greetings from my burgeoning card collection.

The hope of the labor swiftly passing was dashed as time dragged on mercilessly for several agonizing hours. Lucile, determined to be a supportive wife, gently swayed with Josephine to the soothing melodies of the phonograph, doing everything she could to ease her pain after returning with the midwife.

Lucile sweetly sang along with the music, trying to keep Josephine’s pain at bay. In her mind, she reflected on how her mother had gone through this ordeal twice. Growing up, she had only ever heard about the blessing of childbirth, never the excruciating pain that came with it.

She wished Helena and Eddy could be there to guide them through something so painful. Secretly, she felt a sense of thankfulness for not being the one enduring it herself.

Fortune did smile upon them when Mrs. Walker, one of the nurses on call, was available to come to the house and help Josie through her labor. It was comforting to have someone familiar be a part of the process.

Throughout the day, there were various highs and lows. Sometimes Josephine wanted to be comforted closely, clinging to Lucile for support, while other times she needed complete isolation and silence to focus on her labor.

During those moments of isolation, Lucile took the opportunity to be a welcoming host to Mrs. Walker. She was still a bit nervous after their last conversation had gone less than gracefully at the social gathering, but this time, things seemed to go better.

Mrs. Walker was incredibly understanding about the chaos of the situation. She expressed genuine happiness that Josephine had such a good "friend" to be there with her.

Dawn crawled into dusk, and with each passing hour, Lucile's own anxiety mirrored Josephine's labor pains. The panic of waiting gnawed at her, making it impossible to stay seated for more than a few seconds.

She found herself standing up, fidgeting with everything around the house. That painting on the wall wasn't straight enough, the flower vase was crooked, the floors were dirty, the leaves outside needed raking, and was Lady's hay stall full? Surely, it needed to be refilled.

Lucile paced back and forth, stress-cleaning the house in an attempt to distract herself from the relentless worry that consumed her.

Finally, after hours of crying and relentless pacing, everything fell silent. Moments before daybreak, an utterly exhausted Josephine and Lucile stood over the woven bassinet in their nursery, gazing in awe at the tiny miracle nestled within.

With Mrs. Walker having taken her leave, Lucile finally embraced Josephine, steadying her wobbly frame and peppering her head with loving kisses.

All the pain seemed to melt away at the sight of their new bundle of joy despite not everything going according to plan...

You know what they say about blessings, they come in threes.

Winter 1914

I think it's always a bittersweet day when a mother realizes her little girl is well on her way to becoming a young woman. We recently celebrated Elsie's twelfth birthday and I hate to admit it, I found myself getting quite misty eyed when letting down her skirts for what feels like the fourth time this year. She's closing in on me heightwise and I swear just last year she was only at my elbow. She's looking so grown up even if she's still in short skirts and pigtails. Her hair has recently darkened to more of an auburn than the fiery red of her father. It's almost a combination of his and my coloring now.

I made a special birthday supper for her; she loves fish and Will was able to purchase a beautiful carp in town so we had that fried up with some tomato preserve. The real showstopper was dessert though, I made a coconut cake - a flavor none of us had had before. I had seen the recipe in my Ladies Home Journal and when I came across the coconut at Greenfield's it just felt serendipitous. They're ugly things and quite hard to get open, but the aroma was very pleasant. The cake turned out lovely, I even caught Charlie licking his plate, a behavior I strictly admonished. As a birthday treat, I wouldn't let her help a whit with the cooking or clean up, even if she has become quite a hand in the kitchen.

She's grown into such a responsible young lady, I am quite proud of her really. She's always quick to help and is quite accomplished with her embroidery and knitting. She can be a bit fanciful at times, no doubt encouraged by all the fantastical stories my father tells her and Charlie; I haven't the heart to tell them they're all embellished to high heaven or just pure fiction. The faith of youth is such a special thing and all too soon the world will feel more real. Time certainly sneaks up on you, I recently came to the sobering realization that I was only six years older when I married Hamish. It seems of late more and more of the young ladies of Brindleton have been finding beau's from further afield, Britechester or even San Myshuno. I can only hope Elsie won't stray so far when she marries.
