FINALLY i understand WHO in the world is this 'Yazaki Aki' girl which I've seen so much comments about when watching fs2.

For anyone who's wondering, she's one of Haruka's classmate and also member of the Iwatobi SC at the time before Starting Days timeline (read as: the time when Haru met Rin for the first time).

i should have never read the translated original high speed novels cause now i'm pissed at the exclusion of the female characters who probably have equal or greater screen (page?) time than some of the boys who did make it into free!, and got completely shafted in favor of the ones who were never in the novels at all. because kyoani would sooner create whole new original characters from scratch than let girls in the pool

So in the final scenes, we see shots of Shibuya in Tokyo and a girl we've never seen before wandering around, looking up at Haru's advertisement billboard and listening to Ikuya and Nitori discussing Haru's current state. We see her a couple of times, but she never speaks, and we never really see her fully.

The bits that we saw of her face made me think she was Ayumu grown up--but we see Ayumu later, and she has different hair and is still in Iwatobi.

So who is she?

Well, there's a theory buzzing around right now that this might be Yazaki Aki, the friend of Haru, Rin, and Makoto from elementary school (who added the "best" brick to the I swim best free for the team brick stack). She only appears in the novel and manga but plays a fairly substantial role. She forms her own girls' medley relay team.

I really hope that's who it is, even if nothing else comes from it. It feels fitting for a character who was a big part of these characters' formative years and the foundation of their friendship to finally be there, at the end, seeing what they've all become.

Count me in also as someone who absolutely does NOT want any romance in this series. It works so much better as a story about these strong friendships, and if people want to see romance in it, that's what fanworks are for. I don't see them going for any romances with the main characters (straight, gay, or otherwise) -- that would turn of sizable chunks of fans at best and make them outright angry at worst. Boys competing over girls is a tired trope, and I would never wish it on Free! I'm so relieved they didn't feel the need to pair off Gou with anyone, too.

As for who the girl is, the only convincing argument I've seen for who it is is Yazaki Aki, Haru, Makoto, and Rin's friend from the original High Speed! novel, who made her own medley relay team along with the boys. This is supported by the shots of the bricks at Iwatobi Elementary, which included her brick alongside Haru's, Makoto's, and Rin's. (in the "I swim / best / free / for the team," Aki placed the 'best' brick, IIRC -- Makoto was 'I swim', Haru 'free' and Rin ofc 'for the team').

It's infinitely more likely that this character is Aki, a well-established character from the novels and manga who has her own swimming dreams, than Ayumu's sister who we've never seen that I can recall XD;

Her hair looks a bit light to be the girl we see in Tokyo, but that's a very minor detail IMHO (I don't believe we ever see a shot of her colored in the manga anyway), and it makes much more sense for her to show up in Tokyo and be caught staring at a billboard showing one of her old friends than a random new character we've never encountered before who would ostensibly have no reason to be interested in Haru.

Because someone from Twitter said there is at the end of the movie that there is a mysterious girl looking at Haru's poster. Apparently, she doesn't have any dialogues but has several scenes of her at Shibuya. They even think she is Ayumu's sister...

Oh, by the way, I just read the news that only Haruka's story is complete. The free! series is far from over yet. The entire series would likely shift towards girls' swimming experiences and friendship. think that girl might be the new protagonist. Even get the boys to compete against each other for the chance of dating her Bala Bala

I'm not sure who the woman was tbh. I thought it was Haru's mom, coming to check in on her son, while some others suggested she's actually a teammate of Haru's from middle school. I don't know if it was ever confirmed, given that she didn't have any lines for her to be mentioned in the credits.

I personally would love to see a sports anime focused on a female team! There aren't too many of those, and as a woman who really likes sports, I'd love to see one of my favorite anime get a spin-off or sequel with female characters.

But I personally do not want this potential story to revolve around romance. While alluding to dates and romance is okay with me, I don't want it to form a significant subplot, because I think that would defeat the entire purpose of the anime (and the genre of sports stories). I just wanna see a story of people living life without romance involved to such a big extent! (Which is why I really like sports anime and manga!)

Since nothing's been confirmed yet, however, I think we'll just have to wait and see.
