KYEX Part 4: Dreaming of People You Don't Know
Series Summary: Luna and her friends grew up inside of an organisation where they had their souls - the very essences of their beings - were fused with the long-dead ghosts of beings only heard of in fairytales. This is their story, for the most part. While Luna and co. are planning a way to escape from the place they've been trapped in their entire lives, undercover Officer Mark Zimmerman, investigating a company with less than pleasant business practices, and as he would soon find out, much more is going on under the surface.
Series TW: Police, Cursing
Chapter-Specific TW: Minor Character is Physically Dead (Still alive, but not in the typical sense)
Chapter Summary: Mark is trying to make sense of the events of the day and what he read in the files, trying to figure out why the children all locked eyes with nothing when he met them. He's currently lying in his bed, sifting through the events that had happened earlier, when he falls asleep.
Word Count: 1300

It had been about 7 hours since Mark had finished reading and left the ‘Underground’ rather shaken up. Currently, he was sitting on his couch trying to make sense of what the hell he’d read when he was with the children. He was currently lying in his bed, sifting through the events of the day. The more he thought about, well, everything that had happened in the past few days, the more that he wanted, no, needed answers.
Answers to what was really going on there, why, when he had met them, had the children all glanced at each other before glancing at the air around them, seemingly like it was normal to lock eyes with nothing?
He looked at the clock, 11PM, still enough time to get some sleep, but not enough to actually get proper rest for his day to come. “Dammit.” Mark whispered to himself in his empty apartment. Coming to this realisation. Even so, he still shut his eyes and-

“Are you sure about this?” A blonde girl asked her mentor.
“Of course, now, stand right,” The mentor nudged the girl slightly into place on the cold steel dias, “Here.”
The girl stayed in that position as her mentor confidently walked back to a desk filled with glowing monitors and keyboards with computers connected to a mess of wires leading to the back where there were more than a few sockets.
After tapping away at the keys on one keyboard for a bit, the mentor looked back at the girl, pale in the blue-tinted light. “Now, raise your dominant arm until it’s fully inside of the ᔑ̷̮̖̜̼̞̻̩̺̼̮̘̟̭̬͈̱̈́̐̈́͒̌̑̂̓ͅℸ̵̱̦͎̥̫̘̬̹̯̘̱̗̜͙̳̩̻̰́̂̏̏̌̀̾͊̾͠͝ ̶̷̶̢̢̱͍̫̩̗̣̻͈̣̹̦̠̺̖̳̖̰͕̯̫̺̬̤̻͙͕̱̩̈́̌̉̄̄͗̂͌̄̀̔̐͗̽̍̉̓̑͗̅͛̏̀̇̓̇̾̐͆̒̕͜͝͝͠ᒷ̵̰͙̼͓̘̗̳͎͙̦̇̂͊̈́̇́́̂̓̀͐̋̽̃̿͜ͅͅ∴̷̢̧̢̫͖̼͕͖̞̐̈́̓̊̈́̀̓̂̂̂̂̚̚̕͘͜͝͝ᔑ̷̧̡̛̪̳͈̳̳̽̿̀̒͊͒̈̃̈́͂̚̚̚ᒷ̸̡̛̬̩͖͔̐͒͛̐̈́̾̋͌̅̈́͒͜͠͠͝╎̷̢̧͕͓̘̳͚̱͖̗͓̣̹̘̻͍̬̃̃̃́̏͑̽̍̕͝ͅͅ|̷̛̦̹̼̻́͋́̆̋̀͑͛̈̔̎́̉̑̅̈́͛̂|̸̧̭̹̠̺̳͔͉͉̱̮̫̇̑͒̒̇͒͆̏͊̾͘|̴̤̫̗̫̇͜|̴̙̟̲͓̲̣̓͆.
The young and oh so naïve girl did just that.
And then, well, nobody knows quite what happened to her after that, but people seem to think she’s completely dead, she’s not.

Mark jolted awake in a cold sweat. Shakily putting a hand to his forehead. “What was that?” He whispered into the cool air of his bedroom before turning over to check the time on his phone.
Initially squinting at the brightness of the screen, his eyes quickly adjusted to reveal that it was a bit past 3AM.
“Huh.” Mark dully remarked at him actually having gotten more hours than he thought, both with the whole nightmare and falling asleep at 11.
With there not being much point in trying to get back to sleep, he just decided to get out of bed.
After getting dressed for the day, he opened his curtains and saw that the sun still wasn’t up. So, turning on the lights in his apartment, he moved towards his computer, booting it up.
It opened onto Photoshop, the app he was using to create a theory-board of sorts. Is it conventional? No. Is it meant to be used this way? Also no. But it’s not like Mark had any other software to use, especially one that was legitimately intended for theories.
Looking at the canvas showed crudely drawn and labelled images of both people and places, different coloured circles around some of them with notes around the images and lines connecting some.
Mark looked at this, looked at the time, and promptly saved and closed the file. Deeming it too tiring for his already sleep-deprived mind.
After a while of scrolling through a multitude of social media apps, Mark looked at the clock, 5:30, he stared at the clock for a bit before he shut his eyes, still tired from his little amount of sleep and soon started thinking about his dream from a few hours prior.
And then his head fell forward-
— — — — — — —
“What happened to her?” A boy asked, seeming to be the same age as the one before.
“I-” The Mentor started, choking up, “I don’t know, and I’m sorry.”
Mark looked on in mild horror, seeing the people talking in front of him. He.. knew these people, somehow.
Mark saw the same process that had taken that poor girl happen many times over, nearly 10, if he saw correctly. But whatever mistakes made all that happen the first time, they weren’t made again.
That was, until he looked at the last
person to put their hand to the frame. The Mentor.
With the console being manned by someone completely new to Mark, he observed the same, repetitive process happen again. Put the hand to the centre of the frame, lightshow, eyes change colour briefly, go back to life as normal. But that’s not what happened this last time.
“Ready ⊑̷̨̢̢̛̹̹͕͕̭͚̗̊̏̇̿̈͌̌̑̈́̐̄͊̃͘͠⏃̷̪̘̯͙͕͖̉̆̃̌̄̎̄̿́̀̎͋̕̚͘̕⋏̴̺̹͓̥̻̥͒͂͛̈͒͆̕̕̕͝⋏̶̧͚͙̤̭͎̞̫̪͙̮̝̟̰̦̓̓̇̋̀̍́̔̀͑̈́̚̕͝͝͝͠͝⟒̵̢̰̩̣̣̥̣̝̈́̓̀̐̅̅̉͋⏃̴̛̛̻͓͎͚̟͎̪̪͉͗̒͒̕͜☍̶͎̩̝͌̈͝⊑̷̺̦̩̤̭̜͓͕͔̰͔͕̯͊̽̌̉͒͒̒͑ͅ?”
The light spread to the centre, The Mentor’s hand pulled back.
Oh what a mistake that was.
— — — — — — —
Mark’s head shot up again. ‘Another one?’ He rubbed his head, sore from resting on the edge of the desk for… apparently half an hour. So, now he really had to leave the house. Trying to shake off the lingering fog of sleep from his mind, he grabbed his bag, phone and keys before opening the door to leave his apartment and stepping out.
— — — — — — —
He made it over to Hirocans after about 20 minutes of walking. Stepping through the large doors of the company’s HQ, he was almost immediately greeted by Hannah, her bright green eyes now shadowed and dark. “No time for pleasantries, we need to go down.” She said the second Mark got near her. “Woah, wait what’s going on?” Mark shot back quickly, very confused. “Didn’t you hear me? Are you deaf? There’s no time!” Hannah borderline shouted at him, tugging him along by the sleeve.
Hannah nearly ran towards the door containing the near-maze that held the Gateway, throwing it open and quickly navigating the twisting hallways towards the mysterious metal frame in the cold basement, Mark trailing behind.
This time, there was no waiting around as Hannah immediately rushed over to the mess of monitors and keyboards that controlled the Gateway. Pressing a few buttons in quick succession and the light started to pour out of the edge of the oval-shaped metal far quicker than before.
“You still haven’t explained what we’re doing!” Mark shouted over the loud combined hum of the Gateway and computers. “Just shut up Mark! I’m really starting to think you are just incapable of hearing what the hell I’m trying to say!”
Mark promptly stopped trying to get answers, instead glaring at Hannah.
It didn’t take long for the Gateway to finish preparing, Hannah running in without hesitation. Mark, once again, following behind.
This time, the travel through wasn’t as disorienting as before, which Mark counted as a win. But that didn’t mean he didn’t fail the landing. Crashing into the floor on his front, probably getting at least a few bruises.
When Mark stood up, wincing slightly, the door to the Base was wide open, Hannah having already rushed forwards, presumably to talk to the Children. Then Mark heard what they were talking about, and his blood ran cold.
“I think Mark knows more than we told him.”
“Why do you think that?”
“Her.”
There was no noise from the room for a few seconds, but Mark could’ve sworn he heard gasps from the Children.
“I- I don’t understand. She’s gone.”
“But she still got her Companion before that.”
“Did she?”
“I think she did, at least.”
Mark continued walking forward, creaking a floorboard on his way.
Hannah’s head appeared from behind the door frame, her face darkened with an unreadable emotion.
“Alright, come on, we need to talk.” She said,
Mark started walking on, joining the Children.
Whatever happened to him earlier, in his dreams, he knew that the Children and Hannah had at least some more knowledge than him.
Mark was abruptly pulled out of his thoughts by Hannah speaking,
“We need to do this now.”

While most of them make some amount of money - Victoria makes the most, as she is someone who probably has a blue checkmark on the Awful Bird App
This (and all other sheets) are drawn with the idea of being set in the ‘main’ time of the KYEX Prequel series. Everything involving the Children as, well, children, and Mark etc. are all in the past of the main story - so this will be able to be actually understood soon - just give it a bit

Chapter-Specific TW: None I can think of
Chapter Summary: Mark and the Children meet.
Word Count: 1384
As Mark stepped foot into the hallway he had thought so much about after what happened a few days ago, he looked around again. Nothing seemed different to the last time he had been in the place, the same orange-tinted lights, the same layout, the same paintings- wait, wasn’t there a second one last time? Mark remembered there being a painting of a cat-type-thing last time, but now it was just empty space. Before he could fully question it, he was past it and staring directly at the door that led to the room Hannah had been in just a few days prior.
It took a surprising amount of courage for Mark to slowly open the door.
— —
To say that the kids were bored would be an understatement, they were used to this, sure, but that didn’t mean it got easier for them with nothing to do all day. Then, all conversation and movement stopped in its tracks as they heard voices outside, what they were saying couldn’t be made out, yet the one they could recognise was Hannah and one was heard that they’d never heard before, clearly a deep, masculine voice and if anything that made them all feel worse.
All of them tensed almost at the same time as they saw the door handle move, they couldn’t tell who was opening it, but they weren’t sure if they even wanted to find out.
Then, after what felt like far too long, the door opened revealing a tall man with black hair, he seemed almost nervous to be there, his eyes widening when he saw… them? they couldn’t tell what exactly shocked him. Looking just over his shoulder, they could see Hannah’s hair. Eliza felt Vashya - her Spirit - tighten its hold on her arm at the sight of Hannah’s swirling purple eyes. As the man took a step in, David was the first to speak up, “Oi! Who in the hell are you?!” Everyone’s heads whipped towards him, all children in the room looking openly shocked and regretful they even knew him. Hannah took that as her cue to step around and in front of the man.
David didn’t seem to regret what he just said, however, as he only kept in the exact same position. Except he did step back slightly as he heard Hannah speak. “Now, Ig- I mean David, you do realise he’s here to help right?” As she spoke, all colour drained from David’s face, only to soon be replaced with completely false nonchalance, despite what she was saying, her tone was completely kind, like a parent correcting a child. What none of them could shake was the sudden disappearance of the vibrant purple they had come to fear, but instead the green they associated with less negative memories.
“If I may Hannah,” The man went in front of Hannah to address the children directly, “I see you’re all rather confused, as I can tell from… David, was it?” He received a nod as response so took that as his cue to continue. “My name is Mark, I work with Hannah and she… took the liberty of showing me this place, I’ve also managed to piece together some of the happenings here and I want to help, as I heard from Hannah, it seems you may want it from someone on the outside.” The man - now known as Mark - smiled.
The children exchanged nervous glances with each-other and their Spirits, before a few closer to the front of the room nodded at the others before Eliza decided to speak up. “For now, we’ll let you in on what we’ve been talking about,” A nervous glance towards Hannah’s eyes, only to check for their colour, “But if, at any point, you ‘spill the beans’ as it were, we’d know, and… eliminate the possibility of that happening again.”
The kids all seemed happy with what was just said, and beckoned for both Mark and Hannah to come into the cosy yet unnerving room.
— —
Mark was scared out of his mind - not that he’d ever say it to anyone that he was scared of a bunch of kids that couldn’t be more than 16, at the oldest - but, apart from the direct threat he had just been given and that whole interaction Hannah just had with David, the one kid he knew the name of, but what really caught his attention, between the door opening and, well, all of that, were the masks all on a set of hooks on one wall, they looked to be made of a foam, or some other similar material, or maybe even clay, looking a bit closer, then again, he couldn’t really do that accounting on how far away he was, but the patterns on them, the colours, he didn’t know much about how to make things like that but he knew they were all beautiful to look at and he couldn’t help but respect the amount of work that must’ve gone into making them.
As he was walking in, his eyes drifted back to the masks, but only for a second, as he was about to walk straight into the table, luckily, he didn’t and instead pulled out the seat closest to him. It seemed to be a spare one, as everyone else was already seated. But Mark did notice the looks on their faces ranging from almost… grief? to anger, he could think of a few reasons why that, of all things, were their reactions, none of them sounded good though, so instead of bringing it up, as a person who had only just met these kids who also had no qualms about threatening him, he just left it. And it’s a good thing he did, because soon Hannah also sat down, motioning to the dark haired-dark eyed kid who had been closer to the back when he’d first walked in. About a minute of silence later, she returned with a large folio that seemed to be almost bursting at the sheer amount of paper inside of it.
“Alright Mark, you wanted to help, so read through this to get caught up.” The dark-skinned girl, the one who’d just retrieved the folio, said. “Wait just a second, I feel like, since you have my name, that I should get yours too, right? It’s a fair trade.” Mark said to the group (minus Hannah) The children all exchanged another look, much like they had done when he entered, seeming to speak almost telepathically for a moment before a few nodded and started saying their names.
They skipped over the black-haired boy that Mark knew to be David, instead starting on a relatively dark-skinned, short girl who introduced herself as Aimi, then the taller, rather pale one next to her, that one was Luna, then the blond boy, Adam, white-haired girl, Eliza, very dark-skinned girl, Grace, blonde girl, Victoria and finally, the green-eyed blond boy Noah.
After going around everyone, Luna sighed. “Are we gonna let him read now? Or are we still letting him know our names?” The way she said the word ‘names’ intrigued Mark, but he let it slide off into the growing pile of things he’ll probably never address. But she did have a point, so he slid the massive folder over to him and started reading through.
Unbeknownst to Mark, the children of the Hirocans ‘company’ all knew that there were some very important files left out of the folder, not through them not trusting him, though that was partially the case, it was because without the knowledge of any adult, they had burned those bits of paper, all agreeing to never speak of the atrocities that bled through the paper and into their every waking moment together, where the memories could fester and eventually come to a bursting point, that point had yet to come however, so they could relax, for now. But eventually, the secrets that you burn will return to do the same to you, it was just a shame that they didn’t know it.

Part 2: The Deal
Important Note: 1H and 1Z are the only ones of their kind and from this part onwards it will be one part for both perspectives, separated by a line in the middle if required, for whatever story reason (for now it won’t need the line but it may in the future depending on where the story goes). Both parts will have their own, different TWs so keep an eye out for them! If asked of me, I will switch back to doing the separate parts H and Z and post them accordingly.
TW (Recurring / General): Police, Cursing
Series Summary: Luna and her friends grew up inside of an organisation where they had their souls - the very essences of their beings - were fused with the long-dead ghosts of beings only heard of in fairytales. This is their story, for the most part. While Luna and co. are planning a way to escape from the place they've been trapped in their entire lives, undercover Officer Mark Zimmerman, investigating a company with less than pleasant business practices, and as he would soon find out, much more is going on under the surface. A puppet master, their puppets and the group trying to cut the strings.
Word Count: 1766
Chapter Summary: While the kids have nothing to do, Undercover Officer Mark Zimmerman tries to figure out what happened yesterday with Hannah, but in his attempt to get answers, the gets infinitely more questions.
TW (Chapter Specific): Nothing I can think of for now!
After another morning of revising their plan with Hannah, the kids didn’t have all that much to do, on days like these, they just had to deal with their boredom since they weren’t allowed to go to any of the training rooms on Sundays. So, some talked, others stayed silent, listening, a few did things like drawing on the few sketchbooks they had laying around. But one in particular complained rather loudly.
“God I’m bored! Why can’t we just, I don’t know, do something?” David said, making everyone else in the room fall quiet. “We are doing things David; you say this exact thing every Sunday. Just like... talk to Adam or something, quietly.” Eliza said, clearly annoyed at David for the amount of times he has said this particular complaint. “But you know me, Eli! I don’t like just talking, there has to be some movement in there or I just-” David said in reply, before being cut off by Eliza finishing his sentence “Get bored quicker, yes, yes, we know! Just like, walk around and talk I guess!” She snapped.
David sighed before getting up and grabbing Adam’s arm and walking off to talk, or whatever they did while everyone else resumed whatever they were doing before the ‘conversation’ happened.
Mark didn’t know what he saw yesterday, all he knew was that it was surely involving his case. Which is why he was here now. “Ok, Mark, how did you find that place?” Hannah asked him, he was currently in the break room, while neither were on their break, no-one else was either, at least they weren’t in the older room the two were using to talk. “I saw a door I hadn’t previously seen, opened it, there I was.” Mark responded flatly. Hannah’s expression slipped into confusion and frustration before evening itself out to the calm intimidation she had perfected. “But there were cameras along the hallway, before the Gat- door, and not to mention that you had nothing even remotely close to anything even beginning to resemble authorisation to enter!” Hannah exclaimed in annoyance. It was now Mark’s turn to look confused “What hallway? When I went down and back up, it was only stairs. If anything, the door was just kind of... awkwardly put there, the stairs were just pushed up against the thing.” Hannah didn’t react, oddly, she just stood there, face paling and hands growing shaky as her breaths quickened ever so slightly. She turned, gave a pointed glare towards Mark and set on a dead sprint to... wherever.
He sighed before pulling out his phone, seeing that Katie had sent some concerned messages after yesterday was explained to her, in as clear a detail as he could, he could tell she was wanting to know the exact things he had been questioning the night before. He quickly typed a response before tapping the ‘call’ button. He sighed quietly before Katie picked up and he started to tell her what had just happened.
“Just... leave that job, we have the evidence to start something up, you do-” Katie was in the middle of saying before getting cut off by Mark hanging up the call. He stood up from his uncomfortable seat and ran a hand through his black hair, he wanted- no, needed to go back down there. Maybe not right now, with Hannah still not trusting him at all, but soon.
After a few hours of actually working, internally complaining about how boring office jobs were, God had he not missed this. He found an opportunity, he walked with confidence ‘If you look like you’re meant to be there, no-one questions anything, at least, not for a bit.’ He thought as he opened the same door as last time. Instead of hesitating, like the first time, he walked straight down the steps, letting the door slam shut behind him.
But when he got to the bottom however, well, that’s the thing, where the door used to be, there was a hallway. Mark’s first thought was one of confusion, did he walk down the wrong staircase? But then again, he knew that was the right door so... he brushed off these thoughts as he went down the, apparently new, hall. The hallway in question was a cold concrete, slightly blue tinted lights shining down at him from above making his eyes hurt slightly, a stark contrast from the warmth and yellow light of the, what was it anyway, a house? That didn’t quite fit, in his head at least, so... a base? A-
Mark was snapped out of his thoughts when the hallway widened into a room, but rather than the base he saw yesterday, this was entirely the same as the hallway, only larger and containing what he could only describe as a metal circular... frame of some kind, connected to a desk filled with glowing monitors and keyboards with computers connected to a mess of wires leading to the back where, presumably, there were more than a few sockets. Glancing around a bit more, Mark saw another door opposite the one he just entered through. As he slowly stepped forward, he became aware of the sensation of being watched, looking towards where he felt the eyes were coming from, he saw the metal frame and a woman leaning against it.
Mark’s paces stilled as he stared into Not-Hannah’s purple eyes, her iris and pupil completely replaced by the wholly unnatural colour. “Why are you here?” It asked him in a voice not belonging to this world. Mark stayed stock-still, just staring at the thing in front of him. “I know about the case, I’m not a fool, but now... you’re after something more, are you? More... information.” It said with a laugh in its tone, walking towards Mark with a smirk on its face. “I- What case?” Mark said nervously, eyes darting around as he backed towards the door.
“You know what I mean Mark Zimmerman, you’re trying to play me for a fool and I won’t just sit there and take it.”Not-Hannah said, the smirk on its face contorting into a frown. Mark felt a kind of pressure going down on his twitching hands. “Now, I want to make a deal with you.” Not-Hannah said, it’s eyes reverting back to Hannah’s normal green. The smirk returning with full-force. Mark, still backing up, finally felt his back hit the wall and as the pressure eased, Hannah(?) continued after a small pause. “I’ll, y’know, not use what... connections I have to have your life ruined, and in return, you help me.” Mark blinked, then blinked again, just what was going on here? He somehow managed to calm himself down enough to ask a simple question. “With what?” At that Hannah paused, seemingly considering her next words rather carefully. “By helping those kids, and I know you’ve seen them, escape, of course it won’t be simple but...” She trailed off.
Now it was Mark’s turn to pause, “You just did... whatever that was with the eye and voice thing, thoroughly freaking me out with the fact that you know why I’m here, and then threatening me? I would have to be insane to agree!” He yelled, his voice echoing off the cold concrete. Hannah opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by Mark speaking again. “But, while I really, and I mean really, don’t trust you or anything to do with you, I do want to help those kids. But also, me agreeing to this means you have to do nothing to fuck me over, got it?” Hannah’s mouth shut slowly, a grin spreading across her face but there was something behind her eyes that Mark really didn’t like. She stuck out her hand, going for a handshake, and Mark hesitantly reached out his own hand.
“And now, it’s time for you to see just what is behind the Gateway.” Hannah said as she walked the short distance to the desk. “It’s not that pleasant when you first go through, but I’m afraid you’ll have to get used to it.” She said, unnerving smile still plastered on her face. Mark opened his mouth to ask a few of the many questions swirling around in his head, but was cut off when Hannah turned to him after pressing a few buttons on one on the keyboards and said “Cover your eyes or look away, this’ll be bright.” Still not turning around and with that unnerving expression replaced with a far more serious look. Mark did what was asked of him and covered his eyes with his hands, keeping some fingers parted as to see through them still, just because he was complying didn’t mean he trusted her, as he said earlier.
Mark quickly regretted his decision to keep some way to see, though, as the metal frame, apparently called the Gateway, filled with a searing bright light, he shut his eyes tightly and fully covered his eyes, but he could see a bright red, even through his shut eyes and his hands covering them. But when it faded, and he could see again, he noticed the swirling colours that now occupied the empty space within the Gateway. He stared, trying to fully process what he was seeing, but apparently, he took too long, as Hannah grabbed his arm and led him straight towards the mix of colours with surprising strength.
As Mark was pushed into the swirling lights, he shut his eyes tightly, expecting to feel like he was falling, but he strangely, didn’t. He was still going straight forward. Opening his eyes slightly, he saw the swirling colours again, but stretched out along the ‘walls’ of the tunnel-thing he found himself in. Still going forward, he made the executive decision to just... not care about the weird shit he found himself in anymore. Just has he made that decision, he landed face-first into the dark red painted door he saw yesterday.
Looking behind him, he saw... the stairs the went down yesterday, the ones he went down earlier on. But before he could question anything, the door he was still leaning against opened, he managed to catch himself before he fell down fully, looking up to meet Hannah’s gaze. Her vibrant green eyes looking amused.
“Mark Zimmerman, I welcome you, to the Underground, don’t use that name, none of the kids know.” Hannah said, ending the sentence rather quietly. Mark shook his head slightly, a small smile on his face. He went forward, into the place where he would try to get all of his answers.
