sweet rory aka @verorax tagged sage from my upcoming uni au, bright young things for the character profile tag! here’s your first look at my ofc sage wilder ahead of telling her story. hope to share it soon!

1. How do you display affection? What’s your love language?

i’d like to think it’s through my sense of touch. maybe it’s from sharing a space and genes with my twin brother, but i have no sense of personal space. I value hugs, hands grazing an arm, an arm wrapped around my shoulders, head on my shoulder, you name it, i’ll eat it up. i must long for that closeness and feeling like i can rely on someone else to hold me up for once.

2. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

i wish i was less stubborn, more laid back. i sometimes lack empathy with those i love because i can be too concerned with what i want. i can be like an ostrich with her head in the sand, oblivious to others’ opinions or words. i wish i had half of harry’s compassion and empathy.

3. What is your ideal Saturday morning?

the usual morning at glazed doughnuts with harry, niall, and arlie, my roommate. we veg out on doughnuts and recap from the school week (as if we didn’t already spend those five days around each other). then i’ll usually go see my mom, maybe help her with the wedding plans (if she makes me), go out on the boat when it’s warm enough, and by nighttime, i’m ready to hit the bars or party at home.

4. What is your drink of choice? Nonalcoholic? Alcoholic?

i’ll take a gin & tonic any day. i’m never without one in a bar, but i’ll drink a beer if it’s the only thing available. like really, is there anything else to drink around here? i’m also in a serious relationship with iced coffee.

5. How competitive are you?

extremely. very. always. blame it on being an identical twin. i don’t think i’ve stopped competing in existing with my twin brother, ellis, ever since i was born after him (see? i was losing at birth already). because of our complicated relationship, I’m always on edge ready to defend myself or come to bat for those i love or care about.

6. When did you last have sex? Feel free to describe if you feel comfortable.

*insert guy blinking gif here* i have no idea the last time i hooked up with a guy. since school started and my mom’s tried to help me plan her wedding, on top of dealing with harry, another boy trying to win me over, and dealing with my own drama, hook ups are far down my list. go ask arlie, she’s better with this question

7. What is your idea of a perfect date?

watching the sunset on the beach. preferably with rose from the co-op that we picked up on the way. the sound of the waves sliding up the sand with the birds talking in the sky and the breeze caressing the dunes, i can’t think of a better spot. or sitting at a restaurant by the water, where my date will find it hard to concentrate on me or the view...and yet, i’m the view.

8. What is your most treasured possession?

i’d like to think i have a couple for different reasons. there’s the thin gold chain I had locked onto my wrist from a trip to new york city with my dad when i was eighteen. it was a gift from him and everytime i look at it, i think of him and how i can never take it off, which means i’ll never forget about him, even when he lives in florida. there’s also the family photo i have in my room back home of my parents, my twin brother and i in palm springs when we were eight. it was one of my favorite trips i remember from my childhood and how happy i was in california, a feeling i’ve never forgotten.

9. Would you ever get a tattoo? Do you have any?

i have several small ones! I’ve usually gotten them with harry in the wake of his latest wild hair to get a new one. we have matching ones on our ankles after our first semester of college. i have a pineapple inside my arm near my elbow too. i keep them small and inconspicuous, unlike my best friend harry.

10. Do you believe in love at first sight? Have you experienced it?

i think it sounds like a fantasy. i don’t believe in love at first sight but i believe in true love that’s built and created, a process that can be beautiful and disastrous all at once, but that’s life too, isn’t it? i haven’t experienced it myself and frankly, i don’t know if i ever will after how my parents’ divorce crushed the idea of falling in love and staying in love for me.

✧ divination friday ✧

today’s @wakingwitchblr ‘s #WWDivination friday! Yay! So I’ve decided to share with you the free tarot readings I’m doing for practicing tarot ଘ(੭*ˊᵕˋ)੭* ̀ˋ I will be also be offering free Aura readings ~ you can find the other paid readings I’m doing to fund my studies here and here

How do I do my aura readings?

For these readings I don’t use any types of tools, only my clairvoyant and clairsentient abilities. I am able to see a person’s aura through a photo or just deeply connect with their energy from the information they’ve sent me. I am able to describe how their aura looks and how its energy feels; I mention things about one’s past, present and future, and how they are being affected by external energies. This reading is in my opinion one of the most insightful, because it always inevitably comes with advice. I started doing these readings about two years ago, and it was honestly never difficult for me to focus. I get the information as if I already knew it, and I think that is because of my strong connection with Spirit; one I know my witch relatives had as well, and taught me how to use it in my favor and to help others.

How do I do tarot readings?

Currently, since I’m learning, I am pulling one card for myself everyday -either asking a question or just letting my Higher Self/Spirit give me advice-, I look at it and write down how it makes me feel/what I see in it. Then I search for the meaning and the story/description of the card and I write down about three pages of the upright and reversed meanings.

What’s my setting for doing readings?

Burn some herbs for protection -in my case I prefer rosemary, cinnamon, sage and lavender-, light an incense that makes me feel in the witchy mood -in my case it’s pine, rosemary or champak-, put on my headphones and some binaural beats (this one and this one are my favorites for doing readings), meditate for about 10 min focusing on intent and I’m ready to go! After I do the reading I eat fruit to ground myself.

I love doing readings. Not only does it helps me develop my skills, but I get to help other people and give them the insight that they need right now. I also know that my witch relatives would be very happy to know I’m using my clairvoyance to help others grow. I think I am meant to as well.

What's your favorite depictions of religion or religious characters in FE?

I think I’ve approached this topic from a character angle often enough between my series on FE’s faux-Catholicism and light magic and my post on Natasha, so let’s tackle this a little differently. Breaking it down by setting:

Archanea (+Ylisse, for whatever that’s worth)

Weakly and inconsistently developed, as is par for the course here. I get the impression that the original conception of magic in Fire Emblem was that it’s all some form of religion or spirituality, and while elements of that have persisted throughout the series it’s not really clear in Marth’s games that, for instance, the way someone like Merric perceives magical ability is in any way distinct from the way someone like Elice does. Why do the remakes make Wendell a sage but Boah a bishop especially when Wendell is decked out like a pope? Does it even matter when you can just reclass them back and forth? At least Gharnef’s Dark Pontifex title is pretty cool and manages to be so while playing up this confusion.

Ylisse is...ugh. Lissa is not a cleric in the religious sense as far as I can tell (a trait she inherits from Mist), Libra is all steadfast albeit generic devotion to Naga and tasteless trap jokes, Brady is almost purely comedy, and if there’s any theological element to the position of Exalt it escaped my notice. The only apparent organized religion in Awakening is Plegia’s Grimleal, which is just sad (although it does neatly explain the direction they took with Fates, come to think of it).

Valentia

Really strong in Echoes, benefiting considerably from the colorful and variously fleshed-out personalities of the Priory characters. Following on from Archanea, I do appreciate that even in Gaiden the setting commits to depicting the game’s magical classes as segregated between the continent’s two faiths; you don’t fight mages or clerics in the main story, only the arcanists, cantors, and witches of the Duma Faithful. It helps better characterize the followers of both Mila and Duma according to their magical practices. We know, on the one hand, that the followers of Mila blend simple everyday piety and austerity with vaguely Catholic (Marian, specifically, i.e..devoted to the Blessed Mother) rituals that are implied to be normally more lavish than we get to see in-game, in keeping with the hedonism of the Zofian upper classes - and with Catholicism at its best, as far as I’m concerned. The Duma Faithful, meanwhile, are casually sexist and totally into cavorting with and eventually looking like monsters themselves, making it little wonder that lay Rigelians seem to be less engaged with their church than the Zofians are with theirs. As I mentioned previously, however, Tatiana is a problem. Despite being a worshiper of Duma (mentioned in supplementary material but I don’t ever believe in game?) she’s a saint just like Silque and Genny and doesn’t seem to be much interested in the severity or fanaticism of Duma’s followers at large. Maybe she’s just too distracted by Zeke’s dick....

Jugdral

Disjointed? That’s a good word for this one I find. Again there doesn’t seem to be an organized religion that covers the entire continent at the time the games are set, although the Edda church takes that role in the epilogue. Spirituality among the playable cast is subtle but varied, in part because Jugdralians are willing to deify not just the twelve dragons who empowered the holy bloodlines but also the Crusaders who received their blood. Claud’s a martyr figure, but for all his defining fatalism I still don’t find him very interesting, and then we’re never given sufficient context to determine what faith Safy and Tina and Coirpre/Charlot are even practicing. Maybe it’s the same as the Edda church - and who knows what that even means - or maybe it’s not. It’s telling how easy it is to overlook that August was allegedly defrocked for performing torture when there’s so little sense of what the church in Jugdral even encompasses. And why does Edain think that becoming a cleric will lead her to find her missing sister - do the clergy routinely perform missionary work? As with Ylisse it’s the dark religion that actually has its act together here.

Elibe

It’s taken a recent replay of Binding Blade for me to recall this, but the Elimine church plays a fairly significant background role in the events of that game. Across both games there are a plethora of Eliminian clergy from different countries and from all walks of life, and both piety and corruption take multiple forms in these two games. I’ve noted before that Kenneth is a particularly memorable one for me even though he’s a one-off boss; something about a bishop preaching atheism (or secular humanism in the form of worshiping Nergal, close enough) really stands out for the irony. There’s also the contrast between the lecherous but (mostly) heroic Saul and the greedy Eliminians who support the coup in Etruria and the alliance with Bern. Yeah, none of these guys are model clergymen, but it’s how they specifically fail in their vocations that matters (and anyway, it’s not as though we know for certain that the Eliminians have vows of chastity. They probably don’t.). The GBA games are also the only ones to distinguish between priests and monks, and although that’s mostly a mechanical distinction it’s not all that common among fantastical depictions of Catholicism. I assume Renault was a priest before he promoted, if he’s saying Mass and hearing confessions. What were the FE7 localizers thinking...eh.

Magvel

Not quite as competently handled as Elibe, which is something that may be said of Magvel worldbuilding in general. Again the main religion feels a little formless; it’s presumably based out of Rausten, but since all the game’s playable clergy come from different countries and none of them can support each other I don’t really know what to make of it. The most interesting bits I covered in my post on Natasha, mostly pertaining to her support with Knoll and how it frames the contrast between light and dark magic as the conflict between religion and science. Dark magic as an intellectual pursuit into forbidden knowledge is unique to the GBA games as elsewhere it’s framed as a competing religious presence, but seeing as Grado’s dark research figures heavily into the plot I can run with that angle. Riev needed more backstory though, for the insight into the operation of the Rausten church if nothing else.

Tellius

Begnion is culturally something of a mess, pulling from the Roman Republic, the medieval Church, 19th century imperialist Europe (mostly the Anglos and their obviously overcompensating empire), and probably also Japan’s deified emperors. Despite the overtly Catholic trappings of their clergy it’s therefore difficult to parse out just how I feel about the worshipers of Ashera. It doesn’t help at all that the primary examples of Begnion’s clergy we get are the senators, who are all various flavors of terrible people up to and including the prime minister who’s been orchestrating omnicide for the better part of two decades. Doubly so when the PoV character for much of these interactions is Ike, who hates anything related to rule by heredity because it comes attached to basic social etiquette. It’s also odd that the only other named clergy, playable or enemy, in Tellius are a pair of commoner priests with no status or influence whatsoever who just happen to fall in with what will eventually become two of the biggest armies on the continent. And also like in Magvel, Rhys and Laura never talk to each other outside of generic “supports”, so good luck trying to figure out what comparative theology in Tellius would even look like. The Radiant Dawn saint outfits are great, admittedly, as is Oliver’s theme though he himself is the epitome of a joke character - and a tasteless one at that, in line with all those tired jokes about pedophile Catholic priests.

Norshido

Why does Nohr not have a Catholic Church equivalent? Their dark mages double as their clergy apparently, not that we see any evidence of this among the playable ones. I don’t know enough about Buddhism or Shintoism to comment on Hoshido’s clergy, although I get that Azama is a comically terrible monk. I wonder what the cultural significance of great masters using lances while priestesses use bows is? From what I gather the former are more like Buddhist monks while the latter resemble Shinto mikos, but isn’t the naginata traditionally associated with women in Japanese society? I’m completely out of my element here...moving on.

Fódlan

Jumping the gun a bit, but there’s such a huge focus on the church in promotional material that I can’t help but think this’ll be one of the more thought-provoking ones, for better or worse. As quick as everyone’s been to vilify the church I still hope that the Adrestian route at least gives you the option to support it, or at least not make them wholly evil. Oh, and bishops are back, yay!

A little justified complaining to go with your morning coffee

A summary of my thoughts on last week: WHY DOES ANTHONY EVEN EXIST? LET ERIN BE A LAWYER RATHER THAN USING ANTHONY TO TURN ALL HER POTENTIAL LAWYER STORYLINES INTO DETECTIVE STORYLINES.

A not-summary of my thoughts on last night’s episode:

Erin:

Erin prosecuting a doctor who “killed” his own child trying to cure her of a life-threatening disease? 👀👀👀 I’m listening don’t fuck this up.

This scene with the victim’s mom exists, I don’t care about it.

ERIN IS SO RUDE. In what world is it okay for a ~respected professional~ such as herself to make demands of a fellow professional whose service she relies on, and then get frustrated at a totally reasonable answer and storm out? God no wonder Eddie acts like a damn first-day-on-the-job rookie when she walks into Erin’s office. This poor medical examiner lady, ugh.

This is pretty interesting actually. And I have some Opinions about this euthanasia topic but I’ll keep them to myself. But this is a decently interesting ~what’s in the news~ adaption for this show.

Frank:

Who’s this Lenny dude? I vaguely remember him from somewhere but meh, as usual I don’t care about this.

“He can be charged in the court of public opinion!”

This is going to turn into YET ANOTHER example of Frank getting caught between a rock and a hard place, and coming up with some brilliant solution that keeps everyone reasonably happy (JUST LIKE LAST WEEK’S EPISODE, THERE’S MY OTHER COMMENTARY ON THAT). Snore.

I’m sad Lenny isn’t wearing a bolo tie with his suede blazer.

Is this the same medical examiner who made me all 👀👀👀 last time she showed up? Ugh what happened to those cool vibes? Apparently she’s had one too many drinks with Frank and the Sage Wise Wisdom crew or something because snoooore.

On a serious note, this shit about drugs laced with fentanyl is legit and scary. Last year an old friend of mine OD’d on what he thought was Xanax, but contained 4 times the lethal dose of fentanyl per pill. Be careful yo.

So someone killed this artist with the cool math tattoo to up the value of her art? I’M ACTUALLY INTRIGUED. 👀

I enjoyed this interrogation scene actually. It’s refreshing to see Danny use ~brains~ to get the info he needs rather than storming around everywhere roughing people up.

Jamko:

Y’all in this opening scene we just got more information about Maya than we’ve ever gotten about Eddie.

A cop taking money from crime scenes? Maya telling the dude to get the hell in the car while Eddie hangs back, a Thoughtful Look on her face? LOLOLOL don’t tell me this is how the show is about to get rid of Maya rather than revealing Jamko’s engagement.

LOLOL I was happy about this normal, casual, not-gross Jamko scene in Jamie’s office UNTIL Jamie said incredulously “you think there’s a dirty cop in the precinct, and you and I haven’t noticed?” YOU’RE NOT SOME ALL KNOWING MASTER OF COPS, YO. Did it ever occur to you that maybe a dirty cop would be careful, cover their tracks, and have the training to pull off such an operation successfully without drawing any suspicion from other cops? He’s so damn prideful and ridiculous it hurts (and lol gives me some Insight as to how/why they haven’t disclosed their relationship yet).

“So we’re just going to let this go?” “No, we’re going to leave this to IAB, LiKe wE’Re SuPpOsEd tO” ugh Jamie you’re so gross. Y’all we KNOW if Jamie had been the one to come across this information from some random collar, he’d be Personally Investigating regardless of protocol and The Rules, So this is a cool fun double standard.

MAYA HAS MOTIVE YALL. 😂😭

Don’t tell me Eddie’s about to turn around during this crime scene walkthrough and see Maya shoving cash and diamond rings into her pockets. RICH.

Okay, so Jamie saw her on a mysterious surveillance camera? I WAS CLOSE.

This is 100% an excuse to get Maya off the show rather than try to deal realistically with whatever ~fallout~ would happen between her and Eddie whenever Maya finally found out her partner is shacking up with the boss. YOU WON’T CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE. This dumbass show y’all.

Jamie’s being awfully brash, bringing up “Maya’s partner” to an IAB suit who supposedly has no idea the commissioner’s son was dumb enough to propose to said partner at a putt-putt golf course at 10am on a Sunday.

DID YOU GUYS CATCH HOW JAMIE JUST STRAIGHT UP LIED TO EDDIE? THIS IS EXAMPLE A OF WHY I HATE THIS ENTIRE ARRANGEMENT. It is to be expected that a boss would be privy to confidential information that can’t be shared with subordinates. It is to be expected that the boss would dodge/ignore questions about said information when the topic comes up. IT IS NOT EXPECTED THAT A DUDE WOULD LIE STRAIGHT TO HIS FIANCEE’S FACE because of his position knowing information he can’t share with her. I’m sorry, but what’s appropriate between a boss and subordinate, and what’s appropriate between two adults in a loving, trusting relationship are two different things. When those lines get blurred you can’t reasonably expect them to KeEp WoRk aNd hOmE SePaRaTe and objectively refuse to allow ~work conflicts~ to affect their home life and vice versa. UGH UGH UGH.

Um, Sarge, is it Normal to humiliate this poor officer by having her hauled away from roll call? ALSO SHE’S YOUR FIANCEE’S PARTNER and I presume they like each other or at east don’t want to kill each other, so I’m sure Eddie will be super happy with you for this little stunt.

Gross @ Eddie all “maybe I could’ve done something, maybe I missed the red flags, ~this is somehow partially my fault~...” Sister you’ve got to take a lesson from your idiot fiancé and give yourself a whole lot more credit, which in your case, unlike his, will be deserved.

IN SUMMARY: This Jamko situation is driving me nuts and something needs to change in a big way. But I don’t have high hopes for that to happen. Also this was a thinly veiled scheme to get Maya off the show rather than let her find out about this Secret Relationship that should not still be a secret at all. YAY BLUE BLOODS! I hate it.

mind-blaze: An amusing story and some sage advice.

To give some more detail, keep in mind we ain’t raunchy in our sessions, I mean, if things happen, they happen, but we don’t go explicitly looking for the H scenes, if you will.

Now, if they find us, that’s another story. Everyone’s pretty virile in the party, Rasmus being no exception.

Now, we usually mess around in a city where we have a lot of influence by now, but for Plot Reasons and to expand our horizons with some well paying jobs and knowledge we wouldn’t learn here, we went to an Elf kingdom reasonably close. In there, we took a mission the NPC made it clear would be hard and dangerous, but man MAN the rewards are really worth it, so hell, we’ve done the impossible a couple of times already, why would this time be any different.

So we go into this corrupted swamp and Oh Boy the things here are tough, the terrain pretty inhospitable to us, and yeah no this is fucking us up. We thankfully played it safe and bought a damn load of provisions and supplies, but it’s still Hard Fights, we gotta try and avoid fighting as much as possible. After a while, we meet another party involved in this request, of which one is an Elven Priestess. We talk it out, determine we would benefit far more from working together even if it means less of the still very considerable reward for each party, and so it’s eight of us now. Yay. During one particularly difficult midboss, Elven Priestess and Rasmus do some real good teamwork, and they’ve been more or less friendly since the start, so they start interacting more, y’see, and she shows some Very Real Interest in our strapping Rogue, which is naturally followed by powerful flirting. One fucked up boss and relic recovery later, we complete this bulldozer of a request, we get our fat reward, and we even form a useful connection with this other adventurer party. Elven Priestess and Rasmus in particular stay in contact, and well, he sneaks out of the inn where the party’s staying at one night to go hang out with her. It just so happens that that very night, a unit of hired thugs of an enemy of ours found our party (which explained a couple of mysterious rolls our DM was making here and there in a particular street in the city: it was their stealth checks and they nailed all of them the FUCKERS) and they planned to carry out the hit in the night. So, while Rasmus was dating a cute Elven Priestess which in turn became a Sexy Night at her place, the party was fighting for their lives against these hooligans, and they even thought Rasmus had been killed and his body taken for a second, but the complete lack of struggle signs in his room spoke otherwise.

So the next morning after doing the nasty with Elven Priestess, he’s having some Elf Scrambled Eggs with Tolkien Bacon or whatever when, uh, the Elf Magnate that impulsed Rasmus’ backstory in the first place finds himself face to face with our favorite Rogue, they both kinda “uh”, the synapses finishes, and they both “UH”, Rasmus shoves him and breaks into a sprint upstairs (a shove that, by the way, knocked the Magnate on his ass and sent the cake he had brought flying), grabbed his pants and gear, gave the Priestess a kiss and a fast “HEY, THINGS CAME UP RATHER SUDDENLY, I’LL MEET YOU LATER IF YOU DON’T WANT MY HEAD ON A PIKE AFTER YOU GET SOME CONTEXT IN LIKE 5 MINUTES”, jumped out of the fucking window into a veranda, and then Parkour’d out of there in just his undies and a wifebeater through the historied rooftops of the Elven capital’s rich people residential area.

When Rasmus got back to the inn, he got greeted by his VERY CONCERNED party, with the Orc Barbarian asking “HEY DUDE ARE YOU OK? THEY DIDN’T GET YOU, RIGHT?”, and just judging by the signs of battle around the inn, Rasmus’ quick brain immediately screamed “oh no, I was pounding a cute Elf while they got fucking attacked, oh god, they are going to pulverize me if I tell the truth”, so he was like “OH, MAN, IT WAS TERRIBLE, THESE FUCKERS ATTACKED ME AND TOOK MY CLOTHES, LOOK AT ME, I JUST GOT ‘EM BACK JUST NOW AFTER TAILING THEM ALL NIGHT”, to which our Wizard, Claudia, who happens to be Rasmus’ friend since they were kids, calls a big fat BULLSHIT, Insight rolls against me, wins, and makes it clear I was lying.

Now the party wasn’t too happy.

Rasmus came clean, and was promptly punched in the gut as Claudia yelled “WHILE WE FOUGHT FOR OUR DAMN LIVES, YOU WERE FUCKING AN ELF?” (”¿MIENTRAS NOSOTROS LUCHABAMOS POR NUESTRAS PUTAS VIDAS, TU ESTABAS CULEANDOTE A UNA ELFA?”) and Rasmus got grounded grounded grounded for day.

And that’s the story of how Rasmus sprinkled kerosene on a fire and made it ten times worse.

More Background Meta

Caleb: Sage. He knows 4 languages (common, zemnian, sylvan, celestial) which requires a background with 2 extra languages. Sage fits the best, with one of the options for your study being “wizard’s apprentice,” the Researcher feature, the possible inspiration of Sage Trait #7 (I am horribly awkward in social situations), even a lot of the bonds/flaws/ideals fit.

Nott: I’m going with Matt homebrew background some sort of goblin tribe thing, but hear me out with a crack theory also: the only one that fully seems to fit her proficiency stuff is actually Guild Artisan. Weird? Bear with me. She has the alchemist’s supplies (”chemistry set”), knows exactly 1 extra language (Halfling), and is proficient in Persuasion and Insight. YES, those are both things you can pick for a rogue, but - why would Sam pick Persuasion? Nott has a CHA mod of -3, she’s literally still at a negative persuasion modifier at level 4 (level 5 it goes to +0, great). Persuasion also doesn’t fit her character as well as, say, Deception, which Sam could have chosen instead as a rogue. But if he got the Persuasion and Insight from the background, he wouldn’t have had a choice, leaving the rogue skills he chose as Acrobatics, Investigation, Sleight of Hand, and Stealth (the holy quaternity for a rogue). Granted, Guild Artisan raises MANY more questions than it answers, but at least we’d have yet ANOTHER possibility for who she sent that package to in ep 16. Like... ?!?! Guild???? but why buttons?!?! Nott is a mystery.

Jester: I’d copy-paste my old Charlatan meta here, but it’s been confirmed on her critrolestats character sheet. Yay!

Beau: Confirmed criminal. Extra languages come from Monk tradition and feat, extra skills from human race and feat, etc. No red flags for a lie there. (Can’t wait to meet her criminal contact, assuming we haven’t already). Rebellious teen.

Fjord: Confirmed sailor. Extra skill is from half-orc, has used his Ship’s Passage feature onscreen (although I will note he did have to buy alcohol for it - seems more like a way to homebrew background features into something that requires persuasion checks and such).

Mollymauk: Confirmed charlatan. Lives in a web of lies. Love him.

and last but not least...

Yasha: We know nothing. We just... we know NOTHING. Literally all we know is that she isn’t proficient in persuasion. We know her subrace from AFTER DARK, for crying out loud. The only thing we know is that she is path of the zealot/follows Kord, to whom she owes something. Goes away sometimes. From Xhorhas. Folk Hero? Outlander? Soldier? How on earth do you find someone to do hypnosis with? (No seriously, how?)

So this is something I'm much less sure about, because I suck at this. How the hell do you find people to play with (in the context of hypnosis)? Rather than trying to be all sage-ly and giving advice, this is more putting my thoughts together and asking about it for myself. Hypnotism (especially erotic) is NICHE, finding people interested in trying it is fucking hard irl. I've tried asking friends to no avail. I've run munches and events and over a year, and even through those I haven't found anyone. I genuinely want to know the answer to all of this, if there is one. (There probably isn’t though, damnit.)

Well, the backbone of it depends on what exactly you're after, I guess.

Online or irl?

Play partners, or a deeper relationship?

Just hypnotism, or broader kink stuff too? How much does BDSM/power exchange dynamics enter?

Does it have to be erotic? What defines erotic?

How much do you want to know the other person beforehand?

One-off or a longer-term thing?

Who do you approach?

I figure I'll hit on each of these by themselves, but start by giving the example of all of this for me (it's mah blog, deal with it!).

For me, generally, I'd strongly prefer something irl, for quite a few reasons. Part of it is I want to learn and mess with aspects of hypnosis that are more visual and tactile, so online isn't great for that. Part of it is I just don't get as much out of online. Part of it is ideally I'd like a proper relationship involving it (but that's for a different day, and not a requirement, it’d just be nice). While I'm mostly interested in hypnotism, it'd be great to explore more broad kink stuff too, and by default I tend to involve some sort of power exchange-y stuff when I play (but I don't go to the really deep end of it). Obviously I'd prefer it to have some level or erotic, but I'm actually not too bothered if not (I'm mostly a reaction-junkie), and I'd generally prefer to know the other person well and not have it just be a one-off session.

That said, it's actually not set in stone, not for myself or anyone else (probably). Normally I want a deep emotional connection, someone I'm already close with (platonically or romantically), because I just get more out of it that way, and I'm usually on the light end of the power exchange-y stuff. Sometimes, depending on my emotional circumstances, and well, hormones, that loosens a lot and I'd be fine without the emotional connection and just want to dive much deeper into power exchange and be controlling. Although, that feels like a bit of an outlet and may not be a good idea.

Ok, that out of the way, let's jump into individual things! Most of these basically boil down to personal preference, but breaking down each one is useful.

Online or irl?

This one is interesting, as it's the one we probably have the least control over. I’ve already said it’s hard finding people irl so let’s not repeat that. On the other hand, online you can find people much easier (especially people inclined to be interested), but there's a lot of disadvantages to it, and odds are you're grappling with time zone differences. While I'm pretty sure everyone prefers irl, it's very often the case that we resort to online out of sheer neccessity.

Play partners, or a deeper relationship?

This is individualistic. Everyone is looking for something different, and you're trying to reconcile that between two people. A lot of people want a real relationship that involves kink/hypnosis/messing about. A lot of people want no strings attached. Some people may differ depending on circumstances (I wouldn't want to do a long-distance relationship, for instance).

Just hypnotism, or broader kink stuff too?

What context do you want to be playing around with someone in? Is it just hypnosis? Do you want to be doing other kinky things with them too (obviously harder online)? Do you want to be incorporating other types of kink or activities within the hypnosis (hypno-bondage as an example)? Basically this requires knowing what the other person is into, and willing to do. It's also rather malleable, as you can find out stuff along the way and broaden out as you go.

How much does BDSM/power exchange dynamics enter?

Hypnosis by default involves some sort of power exchange. It's difficult not to have that there, one person is in control of the situation. This is obviously easier in the erotic/kink scene of hypnosis, because everyone sort of has that expectation anyways and will usually slip into it to some degree, and much harder with someone who's vanilla, as you might scare them off if you slip into that. In addition, again personal preference. Some people are heavy into it and are very controlling/submissive, some people aren't, some slip into it as it goes on.

Does it have to be erotic?

Probably gets tip-toed around the most. If you're grabbing a vanilla person to do stuff with you aren't going to go anywhere near it. If you're grabbing a kinky person you might end up talking about it or prodding it at some stage, because odds are you're both into that aspect of it. Do you need it to be erotic to get much out of it? Some hypno-people probably do. Depends. Some people use hypnosis as a means to an end, others do hypnosis for the sake of hypnosis. I'd wager the latter are less likely to need it to be erotic.

What defines erotic?

This is tricky. It depends on the people and the context. Power exchange-y stuff might constitute erotic for some people, for instance. Others might not associate anything less than arousal and orgasms with erotic. Everyone is different here, everyone has different tolerances and preferences. I think that's about all I can say on it.

How much do you want to know the other person beforehand?

Generally, for hypnosis, the answer is at least enough to be able to trust them. A lot of the answer to this leans more on safety and precautions. The rest is probably more interesting. Hypnosis is a very emotionally intimate activity. It requires trust and rapport, and done well it builds upon it, and creates a lot of unique, awesome experiences. So being close to the person beforehand can enhance that quite a bit, and make it all the better. In addition, if you get along with them well outside just playing it opens up a lot of teasing and fun in general as well (or maybe I just really like the idea of being able to tease a friend with making their brain slip away whenever). But, this also adds complication, as it can create emotions too. It's not uncommon for two people to play with each other with hypnosis, and quite quickly desire a deeper connection with the other person. Relationships start that way, things get messy that way. It's complicated...

One-off or a longer-term thing?

I think for hypnosis one-offs are pretty rare of a preference. Because responsiveness gets stronger the more you play with someone, and you can build upon previous sessions. For instance first session is just getting the other person under and setting things up to make it easier in future. So pretty much everyone will approach it with the intention of having a continuing relationship of play. Probably.

Who do you approach?

I wish I fucking knew the answer to this. Approaching people not into hypnosis is freaking hard, as you have to explain it all, and hope they aren't put off by any misconceptions or the idea itself. I've yet to have any success there. Online in the hypnosis community is easier, because there's established interest and (usually) basic knowledge already, and just a matter of finding someone you click with. Offline in the hypnosis community I don't know about either. You've got far fewer people to choose from, likely less people available (i.e. not in relationships or such), and more complicated circumstances that can get in the way. I've yet to get success here either and I'd like to figure it out.

So this turned out way, way longer than I anticipated, and it doesn't actually answer the question of HOW to find someone to play with. Crap. I suppose this is appropriate as I'm still trying to figure that out, I'm not great at approaching people, and I tend to be picky anyways. All the experiences I've had are just intuitive clicking with people I've joked around with online.

I'm hoping this is, well, if not helpful to people at least interesting (if anyone has insight to the stuff I'm clueless about tell meeeeee). If I ever have any real success here and figure it out more, I'll probably re-visit this, but that's probably far in the future if I'm being realistic. Yay pessimism!

Here’s some random virtual penning to inscribe onto this nebulous speck of the digital multiverse:

Unsolicited advice prescribed by someone who was an absolute stranger five minutes before our first conversation is the latest addition to my ever expanding list of pet peeves.

Right now, it’s vying for the number two spot on the “How to Piss Me Off” rankings, just shy of the all-time chart topper “you’re clearly wrong but you’re probably also clinically insane, so since I can’t afford your much required trip to the psychiatrist I’ll just let you point the finger at me and postpone relationship Armageddon.”

Sorry, unsolicited advice by total strangers, you’re good (as my dedicating a whole essay’s worth of word vomit can attest) but you lack the trauma induction necessary to clinch the top.

Still, you’re really close to being my personal silver medalist, so well done. All you have to do now is to continue being prevalent enough times and you’ll shove “unwarranted dick-measuring contests” out of the second highest stand on the podium! Easy.

Food for thought, though: aren’t many instances of unsolicited advice just a veiled attempt at a dick measuring contest? The difference between “my dick is bigger than yours” and “here’s some free bed tips you didn’t ask for to maximize penetration and compensate for lack of size” is negligible when you consider the fact that the latter is easily Googled.

Let’s face it. Most forms of unsolicited advice from people who barely know you are worthless because the input is uneducated and rarely ever insightful. At best it’s a forced imposition of their worldview, very likely preceded by blundering their assessment of your state of being.

Yes, you’re the byproduct of excellent genetics and therefore your horse dick is grateful for its African ancestry while my dwarf penis plays hide and seek behind an untamed jungle of pubic hair.

This does not mean my partner suffers such horrendous intercourse that she spends the first half hour with a magnifying glass in one hand and unenthusiastically giving a handjob to a micro penis with the other.

This does not mean micro dick is going to worship the sexual parables ejaculated by the semen infested cavity of the African-esque cock like some sort of Kamasutra bible.

Unbeknownst to you, maybe micro dick is rather pleased with its performance, thank you very much.

If your ‘advice’ is so uselessly generic and self-serving, it isn’t going to be digestible to the recipient. This should be common sense. Why bother, then?

I think a brain probe will discover that one, you love hearing the sound of your own voice rather than the sweet interval of silence (you just can’t shut up) and/or two, you are exercising your perceived superiority during the infancy of our ‘friendship’ (yay, dick measuring underway!).

You may think you’re providing free advice, but understand that advice is never free. My expense is the time invested in pretending to care while longing for an actual intelligent, productive or least humorous conversation to bid me welcome.

Next time, if you ever feel the need to input some sagely wisdom without even grasping who and what you’re dealing with, please just shut up instead. Thanks.
