Communing with the Verde Village ducks and Geese. Yes, this is a lovely photo but I'd like to shine a light on the plight of these animals. These are all domestic ducks and geese(meaning they will not migrate and are a health hazard to native wildlife) are a product of "Duck dumping". The pond is artificial and poorly maintained, there is no food at which to forage, many show signs of malnutrition, along with stunted growth. These are vulnerable farm animals which could be picked off by a hungry coyote, dog, or ran over by humans. Their only source of food is whatever they are given by residents or passers by, which is mostly bread and scratch feed(given by volunteers) which does not provide adequate nutrition for these domestics. There has been many attempts to rescue, provide vet care, and even educate the VVPOA about caring for them, to no avail(to the extent of proper care by volunteers being thwarted by the VVPOA themselves). This is supposedly private property of Verde Village and these waterfowl are supposed to be cared for by the residents. Unfortunately they are not, there is trash around the pond, discarded fishing line and hooks. What these waterfowl need is shelter, consistent feeding, and to be free of stress and fear. I would be slightly less worried if there were coin-op pellet dispensers like at certain public parks(Palm Desert Civic Center for example) and signs saying what to feed the ducks, as well as adequate forage, but the fact also is that there are too many domestic waterfowl with no consistent care.
