Thank you, you are forcing me to finally look at the interviews in MINERVA!

Officially, the note that the artist left when presenting the sketches said: “the circle of creation and the hope that follows”. It does illustrate living organisms because this circular artwork represents the ecosystem, with each sort of creature stabbing the other and absorbing its lifeflow, but being stabbed as well. This order is maintained and becomes harmonious overall. 

Interestingly, it was Toshiya who chanced upon the artist, Nishio Yasuyuki’s work in a book store when he was trying to kill time one day. He liked the style where the artistic pieces could seem ugly but also be beautiful. Toshiya, him and You Masuda discussed how children were actually almost always rejoiced at this work, whereas adults tried to hide it, put a lid on what’s uncomfortable. 

Nishio was made to listen to the song (and attend one of their live shows?) and it was shared to him that Dir en grey members had pulled up the keywords “zero” and “regression” when brainstorming about what the amini-album jacket could be. The actual artwork spans on 70cm in diametre, by the way. The wrapped, complex styling of the band name and album title was done on purpose, because they see “unraveling” as meaning analysing. They also indicated that Dir en grey was beyond a point where they needed their name to be recognised very clearly. Plus, just like Toshiya when he selects a book, it may be the cover page that is meant to grasp his attention and make an impression. 

They did liken the whole thing to an “extraterrestrial creature”, but also essentially a self-sufficient micro-society. It represents humanity, in a way, because life is all about living while hurting others and being hurt. It’s beautiful, but there are damages that affect a whole generation.

Doraemon Art Exhibition Heads to Osaka in July of 2019

  From July 12 - September 23, 2019, the Osaka Culturarium at Tempozan venue in Kaigandori, Minato Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan will host an art exhibition featuring works by 28 Japanese artists inspired by Fujiko F. Fujio's classic manga and TV anime about a time-traveling robot cat.

Yasuyuki Nishio "EXOTICISM" After three years, Japan has encountered an unprecedented earthquake catastrophe. Not only the threats of the massive earthquake and following tsunami but this event also left people with the continuing threat of radiation resulted from the collapsed nuclear power generators of the affected region. In the forceful reminder of fateful crisis of the nation, Nishio contemplated his origin and himself as a Japanese. In the latest works in the exhibition, the artist reconsiders Western classical decoration of which nobody questioned the historical superiority, by reversing the concept of exoticism, a perspective of the West as a cultural center to the foreign. This exhibition will feature a sculpture of a tool as an extension of a body in a form of real-scale car in Victorian decoration, a statue of praying woman as a spaceship to seek salvation in space with the visual vocabulary of the time when space was yet to be discovered, and a relief with narrative elements in reference to “Shojo Manga (Girls’ Comic)”, which distortedly evolved from the mixture of Japanese and Western aesthetics, among others.
