“I went to a Yardbirds concert in Oxford, and they were all walking around in their penguin suits. [Singer] Keith Relf got really drunk and was saying ‘Fuck you’ right into the mic and falling into the drums. I thought it was a great anarchistic night.

I went back into the dressing room and said, ‘What a brilliant show!’ There was this great argument going on; [bassist] Paul Samwell-Smith saying, ‘Well, I'm leaving the group, and if I was you, Keith, I'd do the very same thing.’

So, he left the group, and Keith didn't. But they were stuck, you see, because they had commitments and dates, so I said, ‘I'll play the bass if you like.’ It worked out that we did the dual guitar thing as soon as Chris Dreja could get it together with the bass.”

Teen Set March 1967: Carol Gold Talks to the Yardbirds (part 1)

My favorite section being:

“Yardbirds are not noted for blending. In fact, they all stand out just about anywhere. But in a setting like this, craggy-faced, straggly-haired, tee-shirted Jeff Beck and sweet-faced, well-sideboarded, curly-haired, splendiferously frock-coated Jimmy Page stood out somewhat more than usual.”

Is Carol a bit biased?😂 The answer is most likely yes as in part 2 of the interview (to be posted soon) she spends a majority of the time talking to splendiferously frock-coated Jimmy.

“The Yardbirds were very professional looking, except Jimmy Page, who wore a Mexican vest which hung down to his knees (his guitar was slung almost mid-thigh). They ran through a similar set to the Anderson Theatre.

“Page looked like he was stoned. He was constantly staggering back and forth across the stage and I thought he might fall down but he didn't. His hair was almost completely covering his eyes, which appeared to be closed when I caught a glimpse. I eventually realized that this whole "hippie" routine was probably "an act" because his playing was flawless throughout.

“Let me put it this way, I didn't even mind Jeff Beck not being there. By the way, Beck happens to be my absolute favourite guitar player - ever.”
