I’m not far into Disco Elysium but I think it is telling that I keep finding myself having to take little breaks, or replay the most mundane scenes, because so many moments have made my heart just… swell.

It’s so melancholic, yet so absurd and so funny, so unfiltered. Its rambling conversations, its violently endearing depictions of unruly kids. The music and ambiance and setting and art, the frank discussions of class and race within its lore. Harry and Kim? I’m entranced by their dynamic so far. They chime so well off of one another, the way I’m playing first time around.

What’s gotten me most is it’s gut-wrenchingly raw interpretation of psychosis symptoms and dissociation being so competently written, and so realistic/relatable, but with this cushion of sincerity and artistry to hold your hand throughout. It simulates a mental collapse — its ugliness & chaos & inevitable self-destruction, but also the poetry & the strange allure someone might feel to remain in that headspace, in perpetual psychedelic escapism — without throwing you headfirst to drown in that simulation, which is especially important for people who have gone through that trauma before.

In fact, Kim feels like a wonderful metaphor for being the foot in reality that keeps Harry grounded as he struggles not to float into oblivion. Two sides of the same coin of survival in a cruel, amazing world.

It’s… beautiful? It’s just beautiful… it’s so beautifully tender. So philosophical.

Just bursting at the seams with humanity.

This game is a massive tangle of contradictions. Just like people can be.

I honestly don’t know how they did it. I know I’m singing high praise here for someone whose been playing it for only 3 days.

But I’m moved. I feel seen and understood with this game.

It’s kind of breathtaking.

Honestly, I love it when characters relapse. When someone who’s gotten over their anger issues falls into a situation so out of their depth they fall back on their old habits. When someone who’s learned to open up becomes a recluse again in order to cope with something outside their control.

There’s just something so horrible, so toxic, about watching a character grow and then slip back into their old selves in order to cope, bc you know they still care, that they’re the same inside, but watching them hurt so hard they don’t know what else to do brings a sense of catharsis.

smth smth builder’s signature styles whatever - I love how instantly recognisable it is to be in a Bdubs build whilst not be jarring. This shot of both sides of the river is a wonderful example

The custom trees. Are so freaking tall in compare to the default, yet their presence doesn’t feel obstructive. You don’t feel ‘blocked out’ from the environment as the deliberate thinness of the trunks, what height the leaves on the pine start at give just enough breathe room to: look through, catch glimpses of the other side, and be invited to Go Through It.

He says it in his commentary, a lot of what he builds is heavily grounded in realism. This area is not meant to be the centre of attention, the purpose of these trees is to Immerse and act as transition as one leaves the rest of the minecraft world and into Bdubs’ ‘more natural’ one — where the trees are grey, and the water is clear.

I’m so fucking serious this random cut of the river is my favourite part in the entirety of this forest, I like how still it looks, I like how clear it is yet how dark it is not only to imply depth but that illusion that the river is reflecting its surroundings how you can even say the river is a dark green! Being able to come to these interpretations for something so simple to me perfectly captures what he wants in builds like these.

And it STILL doesnt feel out of place because he does something like THIS. The way the stream gets progressively more and more opaque until it meets the actual main river is genius work. It gives the impression the water in Bdubs’ place is fresh in compare to the saltier, deeper water of the larger river it transitions.

😭And a final thing, I know the white glass he used was done to suggest rushing water but I swearrr he has like a sixth sense in how to place them perfectly. (Forgive my shitty camera) From this distance if you squint you can see these dark and lighter shadows made by the trees, and by putting where the white spots are placed now highlights these small rays of sunshine poking through the leaves and shining on the river and I think that’s unintentionally the coolest thing.

Okay now a post that is actually about the show itself. Spoilers ahoy! You’ve been warned.

When people kept talking about how TIT kind of is a hard launch, but in a “if you know, you know” sort of way, I was skeptical.

I am no longer skeptical. It genuinely feels like the show was crafted to broach what they are to each other, but also to acknowledge that like — half the fucking fun is in analyzing their relationship. The mystery and the conspiracies and the zoomed in screenshots and all that shit is part of it. They’ve come to terms with it. They can poke fun at it now because they have the ability and willingness to draw clear boundaries with us.

The whole show is them going “sure we could tell you! But is that really what you want?” They know that to some extent we are a dog chasing a car. Yeah, we’re having a grand old time sprinting down the road barking our brains out — but what are we gonna do if we ACTUALLY catch up? What on earth would we, a dog, do with a car?!?

TIT is so smart. It takes parasocial connection and deconstructs it, criticizes it, and eventually celebrates it — all while actively engaging in it. It’s such a well written show.

It’s also silly and stupid and gay and fun. And I love that for us.
