Summary:

Ah, anon, I'm so sorry but such a thing doesn't exist. Or at least one that I know of. Feitian was rather vague when it comes to heights, but in my head from the tallest/biggest to the smallest:

Li Jianhong / Chang Liujun (9 chi tall, though Chang Liujun might be a bit bulkier and a touch taller)

Li Yanqiu / Xie You / Lang Junxia / Wu Du (8 chi tall. Wu Du is bulkier of the two assassins)

Zheng Yan (the most "assassin" of the four, therefore the smallest)

Duan Ling (typical pocket shou)

Outside of concrete numbers, these are based on my feelings after reading this book 5 times

I don’t think I’ve felt like this in a long while after finishing a story. If ever? It’s quite novel to still feel devastated after a happy ending …

But overall I think I have to rank this pretty high not just on my list of favorite Feitian novels, but even in my top 10. Though that means I’ll have to bump something off the list then. But which one?

Story wise, I’m reminded a lot of Luan Shi Wei Wang because of the wars and imperial shenanigans. In terms of characters though, I think Joyful Reunion has an edge - LSWW has one of my most beloved MLs in Li Zhifeng, and I loved You Miao for his brilliance. But other than the leads, I didn’t get attached to any of the side characters. (In fact, I wasn’t a fan of Zhao Chao at all.) Now with JR … not just Duan Ling and Wu Du, but Li Jianghong, Li Yanqiu, Mu Qing, Chang Liujun, Batu, Zongzheng, Helian Bo, Xunchun, Ding Zhi, Master Fei, even Sun Ting and Shulu Rui … but most of all LANG JUNXIA. This may be the first time my favorite character from a story was not one of the leads. Without spoiling much, let’s just say that the angst I felt was because of Li Jianghong and Lang Junxia.

so, in this story, our heroes are traveling across the country while looking for tiny shards of an ancient jade-like jewel roughly the size of ping pong ball. The shards can increase the powers of the people holding it, but bring them closer to destruction in the long run.

the heroes form a team as follows:

the de-factor leader (and main love interest): has the most powerful supernatural abilities in the team, the strongest offensive fighter on the team but not very diplomatic

the "chosen one" (the protagonist): did not start with any skills or experiences with fighting, but can sense the jade shards and has a unique ability to work with it. This person also looks after the team, logistically and emotionally

the traditional one with a signature heirloom weapon (side couple member A): comes from a family of fighters and honors this heritage. Uses a traditional but very cool weapon; generally relies on normal physical weaponry in a world full of supernatural enemies

the magical one (side couple member B): has a special ability that almost feels like cheating, but personally sort of hates it. flirts a lot but doesn't really mean it, but eventually falls in love for real

the animal mascot (the cool pet): a very big cat that people can ride

the kid (a real child!): very limited fighting abilities due to their size and age, but has a few unique tricks that can help the team out in unexpected ways

... so, am I talking about talking about Inuyasha or Return of the Cambrian Age?

Okay, there are two "kids" on the team in Return of the Cambrian Age -- with Zhuang Yao being the physical child while teenager Deng Xiao acting more like one, but neither of them is a real "kid" like Shippo

Still, I just can't unsee similarities:

Cong Xia and Kagome are normal humans with a special link to the special artifact

Cheng Tianbi and Inuyasha are the strongest fighters on their team who are significantly more powerful than most in their universe

Tang Yanqiu has his super-heavy row and Sango has the giant boomerang. They have expensive training with fighting from their families, so skilled they can go against the supernatural despite being humans. (Tang Yanqiu is also a mutant, but 90% of his effectiveness in combat is due to his archery skills.)

Liu Feiyu and Miroku would be normal humans except for one special ability: corrosive acid attacks for Liu Feiyu and the Wind Tunnel for Miroku. And they both flirt so much!

Abu and Kirara, our special big-big cats! Abu is much bigger, but Kirara can actually fly. I would die for either one.

P.S. I just found out the Scared Jewel/Shikon Jewel/Jewel of Four Souls from Inuyasha is actually translated as "Jade of Four Souls". Jade! Ahhhh!

I'm on vol. 3 of Joyful reunion by Fei tian ye xiang and I'm so curious as to who's depicted on each volume cover art. After reading for a while I think I can safely guess who's who. Or maybe not haha. ( try looking up on the internet to no avail, i can't find any answers in english 😅) So here goes my take...

Book I: must be little Duan Ling and his dad Li Jianhong. 95% confidence. Please let it not be Lang Junxia lol.

Book II: I thought he was Wu Du at first but damn why did you have to put one who did that to him and still depict Duan Ling still leaning peacefully against his back 🥲. Of course I forgot the details of the tattoo location until it was reminded to me again near the end of book III that the one who had the tattoo on his upper arm is Lang Junxia.

Book III: Zheng Yan, I think, with the tattoo on the back of his hand. And 4th uncle Li Yanqiu (I guess ?!? He looks so much like Li Jianhong) wearing the half moon jade. (Please let me guess right i don't know what to think if this was really Cai Yan!?!)

Book IV: Chang Liujun for sure with the tattoo on his face. I'm not sure if the person he's carrying is Duan Ling? He looks too small for his age and the face ain't alike with vol. i and V. Mu Qing? Again he looks too small, this can't be but then who's this boy? 😅

Book V: Oh yes! this super shredded man must be Wu Du with the tattoo on his neck looking so very protective of Duan Ling in his princely robe! I'm 100% sure lol.

Edit: Oooh! The Carrd has all of the characters' names in Chinese and Pinyin. Also the original chinese cover with chinese description. I now know I guess right! I can now read on without these keep nagging at my thoughts lol.

audio fandom hours: The Return of the Cambrian Period/寒武再临 Trailer drop!

After a few very slow weeks on Mao'er FM, we get surprised with this star-studded production from Tencent and Voice Gem, with 马正阳/Ma Zhengyang and 郭浩然/Guo Haoran in the lead roles, and a absolute feast of side CPs:

Zhao Yi/赵毅 as Chen Shao + Dao Mei Si Le/倒霉死勒 as Wu You

The production value sounds fantastic in the trailer, though that doesn't always transfer into the drama proper. But we have high hopes because so far, this show looks like nothing if not expensive. It will air Fridays starting on Dec 22.

Fans have been getting antsy with Mao'er because it has not announced any new danmei dramas after a lot of shows finished airing in November. This trailer is a pleasant surprise and has racked up 40K+ views in just 12 hours. It certainly knows how to get people excited, bringing back familiar CPs and exciting new pairings.

I'll probably wait for audience reception to the AD to decide if I want to read the novel first, but it's something to look forward to in 2024!
