okay ffiv has obvious themes like brotherhood and forgiveness but so so so many separate parts of ffiv suddenly snap together beautifully if you take the theme of parents and in loco parentis: adoption, guardianship, teachers. people taking responsibility for those younger or weaker. not fully as parents necessarily but what they need in that moment. and how they and the protectee address it when they fail at that duty.

the king, cecil, and kain. cecil remembering the bodies of pacifist mysidians and realizing that's not why he became a dark knight. cid has his own daughter but finds time to check in on cecil, unmoored from his royal foster dad. kain wanting to feel closer to his birth father. rydia's existence. tellah and anna. cecil and rydia, who have lost everything they can protect except rosa, not knowing how to help edward make this realization in his own grief, only how to hurt or belittle him. rosa mentoring rydia to learn fire is honestly rosa's strongest characterization moment outside of kain and cecil drama hours. yang looking over the bodies of the junior monks he was teaching. yang jumping in after rydia without hesitating. leviathan we learn later taking in rydia. cecil returning to mysidia. cecil looking down at palom and porom saying i'm sorry you want literal children to climb the holycursed zombie mountain?

i kinda like to think that was the first test and cecil didn't even realize. if he hadn't spoken up about how weird it seems sending kids well maybe he's just faking being contrite and following his own moral compass now because if you don't know palom and porom can nuke half the mountain on their own that would be extremely weird. ah yes, the elder says, moving his hand under the desk from the 'eject' button. don't worry about these two they'll be fine. :) cecil quickly realizing the two brats are all but carrying him up the mountain he thought he needed to protect them from.

that is all just the first act

except for kain's whole thing boiling over under the "brotherhood/jealousy" theme, moments that fall outside "guardianship" are i think generally less memorable, or if not set up well feel forced to me, like plain readings of the love triangle, yang and cid's sacrifices (versus palom and porom's, ouch), cecil not explaining adequately why rosa and rydia need to stay behind aside from not wanting the girlies on his implied suicide run. i'm sure i'm also forcing this interpretation a bit

I recently had the pleasure to collaborate with @zottower to create this wonderful story. Please enjoy:

About mind control in ff4

I am currently hearing Bram Stocker's Dracula in audiobook form, and I am trying to draw some parallels with FF4. I think people already know that there are little touches of inspiration in the game, and there are quite some nods to gothic/horror movies like Frankenstein, zombie movies, Family Adams (with the thing, the living cut hand, like Golbez' glove who takes the dwarve's cristal), etc ... The parallel was drawn between Golbez and Darth Vador, so Zemus could be a reference to the Emperor. But he could also be a reference to Nosferatu, as he has similar powers, like the one to survive death, to control monsters, to hypnotize, to corrupt other people to turn them like himself ... And he's just as ugly as Murnau's vampire. I think I saw a fanfic with a vampire AU. I'm not ready to read it yet, but I see where it comes from now. But there's something : characters blame Kain and Yang to be weak to Golbez' influence because they are easy to corrupt. Actually, in Dracula story, the vampire's victims are not bad persons. There are two ways to manipulate people for a vampire : blood (for Zemus it's lunarian blood), and hallucinations. I wonder if the characters just misunderstand what happened to Kain and Yang. I see two common things about them : they don't use magic and they certainly were found in a very bad shape after natural disasters : a earthquake and a tempest which caused a shipwreck. So, as far as I'm concerned, I think it's really bad luck for Yang and Kain, but they were just easy preys for Golbez who needed to reach Cecil indirectly because he was unable to get rid of his brother by himslef, he just used his comrades.

Dimensions’ End: Transcendence Tier 7 Banner 1 Free First Multi-Draw Results

As part of DFFOO’s 4th Anniversary celebration, we get free pulls on both of the Dimensions’ End: Transcendence Tier 7 banners.

Banner 1′s free draw gave me a gold orb which turned into a dupe of Tifa’s Ex and a dupe of Faris’s Ex.

This banner’s free pull gave me dupes of Xande’s and Firion’s 15cps. Meh.

Thoughts about Locke Cole from Final Fantasy VI

Locke Cole from Final Fantasy VI (#ad) is a pretty good DPS with a bit of utility in his kit, including the ability to heal the party even if it isn’t by that much.

With his Burst weapon, he allows the party to be able to dish out attacks that ignore the defense stat of the enemies.

Just recently Greened Machina Kunagiri’s (from Final Fantasy Type-0) Burst though so not inclined to do the same for Locke even if I do manage to get his BT.

That’s because the resources to BT+ 3/3 a char are just way too scarce right now. So really need to be selective in who to upgrade.

Dimensions’ End: Transcendence Tier 7 Banner 1 Tickets Pulls Results

However, although I have no plans of Greening Locke, I thought I’d try and see if I can get his LD via tickets. Currently have 572 tickets on hand.

Got the usual bronze and silver trash as well as a few gold dupes. Thankfully, Locke’s LD showed up eventually.

Super pleased to see this. Also glad that he didn’t take too many of my tickets.

Still have 542 tickets left when Locke’s LD came home. The 10-pull that gave me his LD even included a dupe of his 15cp.

Dimensions’ End: Transcendence Tier 7 Banner 2 Tickets Pulls Results

Since I was able to get Locke’s LD quickly enough and I still have 542 tickets on hand, I thought I’d try my luck on the Dimensions’ End: Transcendence Tier 7 banner 2.

Firion’s a decent enough DPS slash support. He has traps that can heal the party and deal damage to the enemies.

Also wouldn’t mind getting dupes of Yang’s Ex because it gives an A Sphere that increases the ATK and MAX BRV stats of its user by 10%.

Unfortunately, failed to get a single dupe of Yang’s Ex. Whenever I’d get an Ex, it was always either Firion’s and/or Xande’s.

Then the one time I got an LD, it turned out to be a dupe of Xande’s. Ugh. How utterly disappointing.

Also ended up with a couple of 10-pulls that didn’t give me even a single gold dupe.

Was beginning to lose hope of ever being able to get Firion’s LD. Honestly, should have just stopped pulling already since it wasn’t like I really needed Firion or anything.

Kept pulling but I’ve started to just quickly tap my phone to get to the draw results screen right away. Didn’t think I was gonna get anything good anyway so what was the point of watching as each item slowly revealed themselves one-by-one, right?

That was how I ended up missing the Congratulations screen for Firion’s LD.

Was pleasantly surprised when I got to the draw results screen and saw my first copy of Firion’s LD. Also got more dupes of Firion’s Ex and 35cp.

Was down to 402 tickets when this happened. Yeah, I did end up spending more than I wanted to but at least Firion’s LD came home in the end. Very pleased to see it.

Don’t have Firion’s BT yet but I’m done with this banner. Have no plans of Greening Firion anyway even if I luck into his Burst.

Opera Omnia Burst Themes 3/?

In the first two entries, I listed all the Burst Themes that had been released by the time the game's End of Service had been announced, and unfortunately that means that a good deal of characters will go on without ever having gotten a Burst Weapon.

So for this post, I will simply list down those characters and pick out the songs that I would personally have chosen for them.

Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia Characters Upgrades Part 18

After finding out that, sadly and unfortunately, the Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia (DFFOO) mobile game will discontinue or end its service on February 29, 2024, started spending my saved resources and upgrading the chars who I ended up skipping before.

The end of service announcement news came as a shock. I talk more about that in another post, but I really wish the news wasn’t true. Wish the game wasn’t ending at all.

But since the game is unfortunately ending soon, there’s no longer any reason to save resources.

Started working on maxing out chars who I may have skipped before or who aren’t fully built yet.

Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia Characters Notes

All the chars in DFFOO are currently at the max of Level 90 and Crystal Level 90. Too bad Level 100 and Crystal Level 100 never got unlocked for any char, not even in the Japanese version of the game.

Note about Spheres: some of my chars have real Spheres while some have RF Spheres while others have no Spheres at all.

Some chars have RF Spheres which I now replaced with real Spheres while some chars have no Spheres but I now gave them some.

Will talk more about Spheres in another post so won’t bother to mention them here.

Note about Artifacts: most, if not all, of my chars already have perfect Artifacts. So will only mention if a char doesn’t actually have perfect Artifacts.

Note about Bloom Stones: all my chars already have their Bloom Stone so won’t bother mentioning this anymore either.

Note about Summon Boards: most of my chars already have all of their Summon Boards completed.

But for a lot of chars, particularly the ones that I’m not currently using, haven’t bothered to unlock the tiles that would complete all of their Boards even though I already have all of the points needed to do so.

This is in order to avoid collecting the gems and tickets that come with completing these Boards so I can use said resources for future banners.

IIRC, only chars that have just recently been added to the game and who I ended up skipping don’t have any points needed to complete all of their Summon Boards.

Will only mention it if a char doesn’t have all of their Summon Boards completed.

Note about Character Enhancement Boards: if I decide to fully build a char (as in maxing out all of their weapons and such), then I make sure to also complete all of their Character Enhancement Boards.

If a screenshot of a char says they have 0 Char Boards completed, this doesn’t necessarily mean they really have 0 Boards completed. Usually, I unlock parts of a char’s LD Board, particularly the tiles that would give me their LD Call and/or LD extension passive.

If it’s available, I would sometimes also unlock parts of their Force Board, particularly the tiles that would give me their Force Echo and/or Force extension passive.

Will only mention it if a char only has a few or some of their Boards completed.

Cait Sith from Final Fantasy VII

Currently, my Cait Sith from Final Fantasy VII (#ad) has his 15cp, 35cp, Ex, and LD fully MLB.

Bought his High Armor then spent the Book and 3 Ingots needed to upgrade it to Blue.

Then I completed the rest of Cait Sith's Character Enhancement Boards and got him to Force Enhancements Level 50.

The only things he’s missing now are the following: his Force or FR weapon, his Burst or BT weapon, and the Force Board and Force Echoes feature but sadly, none of these are available in the Global or English version of DFFOO.

Sabin Rene Figaro from Final Fantasy VI

Currently, my Sabin Rene Figaro from Final Fantasy VI has his 15cp, 35cp, and Ex fully MLB. 7 of his Summon Boards have been completed.

Bought Sabin's High Armor then spent the Book and 3 Ingots needed to upgrade it to Blue.

Ugh. Ended up accidentally tapping the screen so wasn't able to take a screenshot of Sabin's Blued High Armor. Still really annoyed about that. Sigh. Ah, well.

Anyway, have a copy of Sabin's LD that has been limit broken once.

Now, I spent the rest of the Power Stones needed to fully MLB said weapon.

Don't have a copy of Sabin's Force weapon so after getting 10 FR Power Tokens, went to the shop to exchange for my 1st copy of said weapon.

Spent the High Power Stones needed to fully MLB Sabin's FR.

Completed the rest of his Summon Boards and Character Enhancement Boards and got him to Force Enhancements Level 50.

The only things he’s missing now are the following: his Burst weapon and the Force Board and Force Echoes feature but sadly, none of these are available in the Global or English version of DFFOO.

Sice from Final Fantasy Type-0

Currently, my Sice from Final Fantasy Type-0 has her 15cp, 35cp, Ex, LD, and FR fully MLB. Her High Armor has been Realized to 0/3.

Her Force Enhancements have been leveled up to 15. All of her Summon Boards and one of her Character Enhancement Boards has been completed. IIRC, this is her LD Board.

Spent the 3 Ingots needed to upgrade Sice's High Armor to Blue.

Completed the rest of Sice's Char Boards and got her to Force Enhancements Level 50.

The only things she’s missing now are the following: her Burst weapon and the Force Board and Force Echoes feature but sadly, none of these are available in the Global or English version of DFFOO.

Iroha from Final Fantasy XI

Currently, my Iroha from Final Fantasy XI has her 15cp, 35cp, Ex, LD, and FR fully MLB. Her High Armor has been Realized to 0/3.

Spent the 3 Ingots needed to upgrade Iroha's High Armor to Blue.

Don’t have a copy of Iroha’s Burst or BT weapon so after getting 50 Burst Power Tokens, went to the shop to exchange for my 1st copy of said weapon.

Spent the Book and 3 Ingots needed to upgrade it to BT+ 3/3 or Green.

Completed the rest of Iroha's Char Boards and got her to Force Enhancements Level 50.

Sadly, Iroha doesn’t have access to the Force Board and Force Echoes feature so she’s forever stuck at 4 Char Boards completed instead of all 5 or M.

Yang Fang Leiden from Final Fantasy IV

Currently, my Yang Fang Leiden from Final Fantasy IV has his 15cp, 35cp, Ex, and LD fully MLB.

Bought Yang's High Armor then spent the Book and 3 Ingots needed to upgrade it to Blue.

Completed the rest of his Char Boards and got him to Force Enhancements Level 50.
