Interesting commentary about how most people will identify with victims/victimhood while feeling discomfort when others identify with perpetrators, especially given the fact we live in societies (at least the one I’m in and the one that book was written in) that habitually materially revile victims on every level while championing and supporting perpetrators of certain violence.

RE: the absolute fascination (and adoration) I have with the symbolism of Zhu Yan's and Li Lun's weapons, how it reveals their respective characterisations and the discussion of humanity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are so many aspects that I love about FoF but I still believe how the show represents LiYan's relationship + worldview through their weapons is one of the best uses of visual storytelling and literary/visual devices I have seen in recent years. (long text ahead!)
A Gift and A Curse
Where did their complications start? The exchange of gifts. Why do we gift another presents? For affection. It's so ironically simple, free of malice and at its basis so, so human. For a demon like Li Lun who claims to not understand humans, he reciprocates the moment of kindness Zhu Yan shows him - the rattle to make him happy, and him giving Zhu Yan the umbrella to shelter him from rain.
There is something so beautifully ironic about two great demons eventually using ordinary, human household objects as their weapons. And items given to each other at that. When they first receive them, both the umbrella and rattle are just simple objects with no meaning attached to it, except for the goodwill of friendship. There is no inherent ill-intention and it is pure. Yet.
Li Lun ultimately only understands reciprocation, and not truly the innate kindness and affection which Zhu Yan demonstrates. Zhu Yan gave Li Lun the rattle to have him understand why he finds humans wonderful: Can any of our demonic powers have the ability to make someone happy just like this rattle does for a child? Li Lun gives Zhu Yan the umbrella because Zhu Yan gave him the rattle and made him happy. Li Lun understands the action, and does not grapple with its underlying intentions. He consistently struggles with this throughout the story, especially when actions do not match up with the speaker's reasonings.
Dissonance in character is an extremely human trait, and the understanding of this is where Zhu Yan and Li Lun’s stories and similarities diverge. Zhu Yan on one hand, understands the complexity of humans and is at terms with it. Li Lun on the other hand, never understands the ability to be complex and paints humanity black. Their gifts are still turned into weapons that will eternally curse them of their once-there closeness, because of each other and their inability to reconcile their ideologies. How they use the umbrella and rattle from here on, represents their differences in their views of humanity.
Double Edged
When watching any fantasy/wuxia/xianxia cdrama, everyone who is written as a fighter usually has an offensive weapon used and made for injuring and killing. But not when it comes to Zhu Yan and Li Lun - they are two individuals who will certainly be masters in weaponry if they wielded a sword or blade. But they don’t.
In the Wilderness, from what we see, none of the demons use weapons. Even Cheng Huang uses an hourglass. Both Li Lun and Zhu Yan do not own any weapons before gifting each other the rattle and umbrella, and these aren’t even supposed to be used as weapons. There is such an underlying innocence to demons that instead of choosing a blade to take as a weapon, they choose these essentially harmless items instead. Though, this innocence ends here. The concept of weapons is a human creation. The concept of making an item specifically just to harm others is an especially human conception. By adopting the identity of weapons onto their gifts, the multifaceted nature of weaponry and thereby humanity seeps into their characters. Weaponry is both ironically and ironically human, and their weapons represent both sides of human nature that Zhu Yan and Li Lun believe in.
A weapon is only causes harm in one's hands if you make command it to. Do you protect or do you do harm with it? I find it so telling and intriguing that Zhu Yan and Li Lun run off in either directions with the purposes of a weapon. Zhuyan has always been fascinated by the human world versus Lilun having apathetic views of the human world, and they reflect this in how they use their weapons.
Zhu Yan uses his umbrella to always shield his team, protect and deflect harm, while the harm he inflicts on others comes from his innate spiritual energy (one word spells). He protects this simple umbrella and preserves its goodness, indirectly making sure to not sully the goodness of humanity. Instead, he chooses to use himself as the offensive weapon. On the other hand, Li Lun turns his rattle into an offensive weapon, changing its tip into a dagger. Before it is destroyed, all his attacks are summoned from strikes against the rattle. He doesn’t care, and humanity is trash, therefore he treats this object of innocence with irreverence and violence.
Though, there still is Li Lun’s favourite question: Is it better to be a demon or human? He chooses human. Which at the very least, is interesting.
Who You Wish To Be
The thematic concern of LiYan's relationship is very much defined by this question they often pose or have been asked by others: Is being a human or a demon better?
On an even deeper level, the juxtaposition between Li Lun's use of the rattle and what he says, being a human is better, is even more encompassing of his character — driven, conflicted obsession. The same way he keeps trying to break Zhuo Yichen and Zhuyan, but manages to maintain somehow civil and emotional conversations with them, his treatment of his rattle but the fact he thinks being human is better, and his one-time statement “maybe the human world is interesting after all” are contradictory. He is never at peace with himself and cannot accept things the way they are. He is very much a child, misguided and believing that things are one-dimensional (all humans are bad, Zhuyan how could you hurt me for them) while things in reality are complex. Even his best intentions, from his line “I, Li Lun, will never run away from things (…)” is innocently one dimensional. He will never be the human he wants to be until he comes to terms with this. And most importantly, it's not even about being human. It's never about titles or names, it's about who he wants to be. Li Lun once again is fixated on surface levels that he doesn't grasp the depth of reality.
"Whether one is a human or demon, it's only a matter of titles. Just be whoever you want to be." - Zhu Yan, Ep 26.
Zhu Yan is the stellar opposite of Li Lun. He doesn’t sully Li Lun’s gift to him and uses it the way Lilun initially gave it to him for: to protect. And his answer to the Demon or Human question as written above is telling of his character, compared to Li Lun's set-in-stone answer. But despite everything, what makes everything so tragic is what started it in the first place: affection. One keeps that affection as a weapon to spread the same to others, while the other keeps and weaponises that affection to regain it all back.
Just like how he uses his rattle to relentlessly pursue revenge, Li Lun is so insistent on what should have been, that he doesn't see what can be, and it curses him. Zhu Yan sees the possibilities of everything, wants to protect the good, and it curses him. Perhaps its this inevitability of their separation and also the sliver of hope that they can reconcile, trapped in their shared respective curses, that troubles them deep down.
-
Their weapons symbolise both their ideologies, and serve as physical reminders of their intertwined past. Regardless of how they use their weapons, they use a reminder of the other as defense and offense against the world. A diverged path still has met once before. The sharpest blade is still one crafted from the torment of memory.
On Visual Story-Telling
The use of these unusual objects in c-drama land as weapons is such a stroke of genius on the production team and writers' part. It gives so much more flavour and uniqueness to these characters instead of the usual sword or spear. Such small, precise, details with large implications on characterisation.

First time asking sorry, but what do you think about platonic yan redson with orphan reader?
Hi! Welcome to my blog ^^ I'll try my best to see what I can do for this idea... I hope it's okay. Sorry it took so long to make, I kept returning to it for months but kept running out of ideas since the request was vague :( Hope you like it even it it's short!
Yandere! Platonic! Red Son with Orphan! Darling
Pairing: Platonic
Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Obsession, Overprotective behavior, Manipulation, Coerced adoption (?), Isolation, Implied kidnapping, Implied forced companionship.
Tumblr media
I couldn't tell if you meant Red Son being aged up and caring for an orphan or not?
Either way, I can see Red Son being an overprotective sibling more than a parent.
Red Son would at first be unsure how to deal with you.
Even MK has a parental figure, so hearing you have no parents makes Red Son... unsure about you.
Although he's surprisingly sympathetic for a supposed villain.
Red Son probably didn't know you were an orphan until he got to know you better.
You often hang around MK's friend group so he originally never bothered to ask such a question.
It isn't until Red Son starts to get closer to you that you let it slip.
He was probably doing something like venting to you... talking about his parents and what they expect from him.
Only for you to say something that baffles him.
"At least you have parents... I'm sure they love you a lot if they ask for so much."
He pauses his sentence, staring at you in bewilderment.
You... huh???
This entire time he hasn't known you were an orphan!?
Granted, it's not like he was actively looking into it...
That and you never mentioned it.
He's stunned... but never says anything mean.
He's more just... surprised.
"You're telling me you have no parents...?"
Then you start explaining to Red Son that you see MK's friend group as your family.
He hadn't known they meant so much to you, either.
Red Son was quite oblivious to you until he actually got close.
Afterwards he feels oddly... sympathetic? Protective?
It's a strange feeling to him...
He doesn't know why he cares so much.
Nevertheless... He's still drawn to you.
Imagine over time Red Son actually tries to be your friend...
Although, friendship soon becomes something akin to an overprotective sibling.
Red Son has never had siblings.
But naturally he seems to stick around you like an older brother.
The others no doubt comment on it, MK and Mei especially.
He usually snaps at them, trying to deny that you're anything special to him.
It's all a lie of course... Part of Red Son actually likes the idea of being your older brother.
Red Son nearly dies inside when his parents catch wind of him being so close to you.
He tries desperately to explain himself, he isn't sure why.
Maybe part of him is scared they'll harm you if he doesn't defend you?
I can see his parents finding it... amusing that Red Son cares so much about you.
Human or demon he seems to defend you like you're actually related.
Red Son's parents no doubt want to meet you, which is unnerving for you.
When you meet DBK and Iron Fan, the two may even accept you into their family eventually.
Doesn't matter if you like it or not.
Red Son acts as your brother... and his parents act as your parents.
He takes the role VERY seriously, too.
Even when you don't want him to, Red Son is very protective and strict.
He considers you part of the Bull Family...
Which means you should act like it.
Red Son even drags you to learn tinkering and inventing with him.
He views it as bonding.
Pretty soon he even tries to isolate you from MK and the others.
His family is yours... It's the only family you need.
Actually, why stop there?
Why not just move you in?
You want a family, don't you?
You're lucky Red Son cares...
He can give you a family, a home, even brotherly love if you want! (Even if you don't....)
It's concerning how fast he becomes obsessed...
It's all a whirlwind before you're moved into his home and practically having a bunk bed with him.
By this point you're in too deep.
Red Son doesn't want you to feel alone.
He'll try out this brother thing for you.
No one's going to convince him otherwise.
Not unless they wish to be incinerated.
Long story short, Red Son becomes obsessed with being your big brother...
Which in the end makes you join his family... most likely against your will.

The bright glow of your computer screen filled your room as you tuned into livestream. He was a perfect personification of his name, bright, charismatic, charming, always seemed to know how to make you laugh, and without knowing made your gloomiest of days feel like the sun was shining on them. You’d been a dedicated fan of Helios since the start of his career, reveling in his entertaining antics and infectious personality. But tonight’s stream promised something different, something bound to excite YOU.
“Hey, everyone! Tonight, we’re doing something really special and something you've all been waiting for!” Helios announced, his voice full of excitement. The stream started with him not in his usual room with the bookcase full of random trinkets and a lamp shining an assortment of colors across the ceiling. The chat erupted with cheers and emojis. Little did you know, the surprise was far more personal than you could imagine.
You watched intently as Helios teased a new addition, a puppy cam. He had often talked about wanting to adopt a shy, skittish, chubby dog, he often saw when he ran in his local park,(the same park you would watch him and take pictures of him running around) and the cameras goal was to share it's cuteness with chat and captured its playful antics. As the chat overflowed with excitement to see the puppy, your heart raced not just for the new photos that will grace your album, but also for the man on the screen.
As the stream continued in this strange room like basement, something shifted. Helios's playful demeanor began to fade, replaced by an intensity that sent a familiar thrill through you. There was an edge to his voice that hinted at something darker and lustful lurking beneath the surface.
Suddenly, the screen of your monitor flickered and as you stood up slightly the plush of you stomach pushing onto the table to see the issue. You felt a sharp pain in your neck then arm wrapped around your waist and another under your knees.
When you woke up, you found yourself in a cozy, dimly lit room that mimicked your aesthetic of your room but with more, more colorful lights and the softest blankets, more plushies and knickknacks then you remember owning. The faint sounds of Helios’s voiced echoed through the walls. Confusion washed over you as you took in your surroundings.
Pictures of you taking photos of Helios, pictures of every meet and greet you've been to, snapshots of your online interactions with him, every depraved comment and the more romantic ones too, even photos of you watching his stream, you in your actual room looking at your monitor.
Before you could fully process what was happening, Helios entered the room, his expression a mixture of glee and nervousness. “You’re awake! I’m so glad you’re here!” His eyes sparkled with an intensity that made your heart begin an familiar race.“That nasty drug didn't do any harm your sweet body, right?.”
“What… what’s going on?” you asked, still trying to piece together the reality of your situation. The reality that he's in front of you and you don't have your camera to capture his prettiness.
He grinned, stepping closer. “I couldn’t let you go on just being a fan, my love. You deserve so much more! We’re going to have our own very special streams together, just you and me.”
A shiver ran down your spine, but instead of fear, a thrill pulsed through you. Deep down, you realized that your dreams were becoming true, he noticed you. Excitement plused through your veins, excitement to be with him, excitement to be more than just a viewer in his life.
“Don’t worry! I’ve already set up the puppy cam for you. The chat now can worship you like you deserve to be. They were really eager to see how cute you are and the sounds you make.” he said, beaming a seductive tone taking over in his voice. “I want everyone to see how much fun I'm going to have with you!”
You couldn’t help but smile at his enthusiasm and the slightly suggestive words leaving his mouth. The thought of being apart of his world, of being adored so completely by him, sent a rush of warmth through you. “I....I-uh wouldn't mind,” you admitted, surprising even yourself.
His eyes widened in delight. “Really? You mean it? This is going to be amazing!” He pulled you into a tight embrace squeezing your softness, and for a moment, you felt safe, cherished and wanted.
As the streams continued with the new addition of you being introduced, you soon embraced your new reality with open arms. The puppy cam captured everything your laughter, your playful banter, how Helios would fuck you till you broke, and the way he would treat you like you were the only person in the world after, carefully putting you back together.
Tumblr media
His obsession became a twisted but intoxicating fantasy. The chat continued to cheer for “the cutest couple on Divine,” completely aware to the true nature of your relationship. Happy to have you, see you, and here you, even in it's small percentage to how Helios does. You enjoyed the thrill of being his captive while relishing the affection that came with it.

Hey, I saw your Sentinel! Reader posts and I was curious to how you would incorporate them into the Hivemind and Amnesiac Wolverine AU story?
I imagine Sentinel Reader would have been on their own, not able to be converted in a simple manner and who's been wandering on their own, helping people and running from the scary individuals who keep chasing everyone...
Sentinel Reader stumbles upon confused, feral Logan, and is able to bundle him inside a little cabin, keep him warm in old blankets and furs, and acts as a nurse/caretaker until his mind starts to heal a bit...
When Logan comes to, his mind slowly winding down to a less aggressive, fearful pitch, he's shocked amd worries that what looks like a kid is taking care of him... But he also notices that they've given up any extra supplies so he could eat and be warm and clean, while they've had the smaller end of the stick. What does he do? Decides to adopt them and try to repay them.
When he finds out they're robotic, at first the feels uneasy... until they're crying because their hand hurts and it's not attached, and before he knows it he's over the initial fear, because that's his kid, d*mnit, and they're in pain and need him to make it better. He doesn't tolerate anything trying to hurt them, animal or human or mutant or infected. Reader may be different, but they're nicer than most people they've run into or remembered, so he's sticking with them, and bringing them with him wherever he goes.
When the two are found by the hivemind... well, the hivemind falters for a minute. This is a being who is not fully human, or even human at all... But, it's nice, and a few members start to recall it having helped them years ago... Huh... So, it was helping Logan? ... Well, that settles it. This is THEIR bby now too! It may take a bit of time to connect Reader to the hivemind, but rest assure, they'll accomplish it. They might need to smooth over a few fears and take extra precautions not to damage Reader's mind or overwhelm them, bit otherwise? It should work...
(They accept Reader for being such a good, helpful, nonmurderous bean, who only wants friends and family and to be loved. Logan sees them as his kid, the platonic yans see them as a friend or sibling or child depending on which platonic yan it is, and overall no one wishes Reader harm...)

Can I request platonic yan fused Zamasu with some random human mortal he decided to adopt one day? Like- he wants to kill literally every other mortal in existence and just make it so him and “his” child can enjoy a mortal-free world together
(if you feel more comfortable writing platonic yan Zamasu and Goku Black working together then that’s fine too- I just don’t want you to feel uncomfortable with my request and I’m sorry if it does)
This sounds good, I like it.
Looking ahead to a book I'm rewriting, something similar will happen.
Some info: gn reader, Fused Zamasu but Zamasu for short, Yandere behavior ofc.
Tumblr media
Zamasu, a being of divine ambition and righteous fury, wages war against all mortals in the aftermath of countless battles. His goal: is to purge the universe of imperfection, creating a world free from the corruption of humanity. Yet, amidst the chaos, he encounters a young human named Y/N in a ruined city. Despite his deep-seated loathing for mortals, something about Y/N captivates him—a unique spirit, untainted by the malice he despises.
Intrigued by their calm and resilient nature, Zamasu decides to spare Y/N, deeming them worthy of his divine protection. He envisions a perfect utopia where only he and Y/N exist, unbothered by the flaws of others. This newfound purpose begins to overshadow his previous motivations, transforming his mission of destruction into a quest for companionship.
As they travel together, Zamasu shares his grand vision of justice with Y/N.
"The mortals are beyond redemption," he declares, his voice filled with conviction. "Their very existence taints the universe."
Y/N listens, intrigued yet wary. "And what about me?" they ask, challenging him. "Am I not mortal too?"
"You are different," Zamasu responds, his gaze intense. "You possess a purity that sets you apart. Together, we will create a paradise."
Time passes, and Zamasu's obsession with Y/N deepens. He meticulously controls their environment, ensuring that no harm comes their way. Y/N, initially fascinated by Zamasu's charismatic presence and seemingly noble cause, gradually becomes aware of the darkness lurking beneath his serene facade. They begin to see glimpses of the destruction he leaves in his wake, the worlds razed in the name of his twisted sense of justice.
Conflicted, Y/N questions Zamasu's methods, probing into the morality of his actions.
"Is this really justice?" Y/N asks one day, their voice filled with doubt. "You're destroying entire civilizations."
Zamasu dismisses their concerns with a wave of his hand. "These mortals are irredeemable. Their end is necessary for our perfect world."
Y/N frowns, their conscience battling against Zamasu’s ideology. "But is a world built on so much death truly perfect?"
Tension mounts as Y/N grapples with their growing awareness of Zamasu’s madness. Despite his insistence that his actions are justified, they cannot ignore the suffering caused by his relentless pursuit of perfection. Their once-unquestioning admiration for Zamasu turns into a moral struggle, torn between the allure of his grand vision and the reality of his tyrannical nature.
In a pivotal moment, Y/N confronts Zamasu, challenging his warped ideals.
"You can’t just wipe out everyone who disagrees with you!" Y/N exclaims, their voice tinged with frustration. "That’s not justice, that’s tyranny!"
Zamasu’s expression hardens, but there’s a flicker of pain in his eyes. "You don’t understand, Y/N. I do this for us. For our paradise."
"Paradise at what cost?" Y/N counters, their resolve unwavering. "You’re becoming the very thing you claim to despise."
Caught between his divine mission and his bond with Y/N, Zamasu becomes increasingly possessive.
"You belong with me," he insists, a dangerous edge to his voice. "Together, we will rule this perfect world."
"But I can't support this," Y/N argues, backing away. "I can't be part of a life built on destruction."
Zamasu’s gaze turns cold, his grip tightening. "You will see things my way. There is no escape, Y/N. You are mine."
Realizing the futility of resistance, Y/N feels a chill run down their spine. Trapped by Zamasu’s overwhelming power and obsession, they understand that their freedom is lost. The once-idealistic vision of paradise has become a gilded cage, leaving them to wonder if Zamasu's love is truly divine or a curse in disguise.
Ultimately, Zamasu's obsessive love binds Y/N to him, forcing them into a dark companionship. As they stand together in the desolate world, Y/N understands that their choices have been stripped away, and escape from Zamasu's grasp is impossible.
"Even gods can be wrong," Y/N whispers, looking out at the ruined landscape.
Zamasu’s response is firm. "You will learn to accept this world, Y/N. Together, we will find our peace."
But as Y/N gazes at the destruction, they know peace will always remain out of reach.

Hi~ I've been lurking in your blog for quite sometime ^^
It's your fault you got me hooked on Yulian so now you have to bear the consequences :)
How would Yulian react if like...their darling's children die be it from illness or whatever, but darling just loved them so much, and due to the loss they basically became a vegetable, like not reacting to anything, always blank, never answering, always dazed. And one day they want to take their life due to grief?
That's all see you later ^^
(also, your the first blog I've come across that the Yan hates or doesn't want kids. I remember reading it for the first time and just being like "wait—wait what? That's not....that's not how it works?????")
I love how you know it's darling's and not their children (adopted works too) to care for 🤣🤣
Since this scenario will never happen in Utopia, I'll do this for Dystopia~~ (ps: this has happened once in the story so I know what will happen out of instinct)
That will only fuel his dislike toward children. I mean, no hate here because he only loves you but these children are starting to get on his nerves. Man already dislikes having another living thing butting into his life (yes that's how it works for him lmaoo). You don't see a Yan! Husband does not want children that often right partner?
ꕤ — warnings — Graphic Thoughts! Self harm, attempted suicide
"Dear, at least eat something, even just a bit."
You sat there motionless like a doll. He hated it. He hated seeing you like a blank torn canvas, a walking dead– a corpse. Yulian brought the spoon into your lip and nudged your lip open, trying to force its way into your mouth. That was one thing, the second would be making you eat it.
You were practically asking to be sent to the hospital again, met with syringes that you feared so much. Why? Over those brats? He knew they were nothing but trouble but he just couldn't upset you even for one bit, that was the only reason why agreed to it.
And these brats ruined it all by dying before he ended them himself.
He should have just slammed their heads down into the table before they were buried, just like the good old times when kicked them down into oblivion, trapping their souls in the Graveyard.
But they sure were fortunate you were there to see their bodies one last time else they might be gone, ground into a lump of meat.
Yulian sighed as he took the bottle of pills into hand, hitting the end of the bottle for the pills to roll out into his palm.
"Here, take these supplements dear."
Yulian pinched your cheek with his thumb and index finger, urging you to open your mouth and swallow the pills. Except that, it's not supplements but drugs to seal your conscious mind.
This way, it'll be easier for him to listen to him.
This way, it'll be easier for him to pull you away from all the harm you've been inflicting on yourself. No more throwing yourself down the stairs, no more overdosing on pills, no more pricking your skin with needles and pens, and no more disobeying his words.
"Come dear, let's eat."
"Nnh."
(Uh I stopped mid-way... can't think of what to write next)
But yes, he will have to increase the drug's dose usage to control you overall.

I’ve always been curious on what type of parents the Yan!Rise gang would be🤔
And this may be a bit too dark but would any of the guys have kids as a way to control their so?👀
(Love your work so much dude😭💛)
Tumblr media
Oh honey.... These kinds of dark questions always manage to get me hyped and I feel so embarrassed about it LMAO-
Personally, I kind of see Raph to be the yandere that would end up having a kid to ensure his darling is locked in with him forever. (this hc might be self-indulgent, so please take it with a pinch of salt :)) In his mind, if he had to take care of his brothers as kids, what harm could a few more turtles running around possibly do? He always did like being the leader after all, so maybe he'll just do it in a different way. Whether his darling is ready for what that entails, is a whole other question. 🤗
The others? I personally can't see Mikey as the type to try and baby-trap his darling, since I see him as the clingy youngest-sibling type. However, he might end up doing it if pushed too far, you can never be too careful with the Delusional-type yanderes after all. The moment he starts thinking that having a family will help live out his delusions, his darling is royally fucked.
Donnie however... He already has Shelldon, so he understands some of the responsibilities of raising a child/robot. He might hesitate for a while before actively considering baby trapping his darling. Whether or not he actually goes through with it, solely depends on how mature and ready he is to go through raising a teenager again. (The chances are low, but never zero)
Leo? We all know how he readily accepted Casey into the family once he proved his status in the movie, so he'd probably end up adopting kids when he's older and more invested in expanding the family. Imagine he brings some random baby home and begging his darling to raise it together 💀💀 (although I can see him going with the traditional baby-trapping route, iykwim, I feel he'd resort to adopting more compared to actually having a child)
(I haven't really thought all that much about how they'd be as parents, so I'm really sorry for not answering the question all together! I just don't have too much experience with... Parents or family in general, so I'm not really sure on what they act or feel like! Maybe I'll try in the future, but for now I am kind of clueless about it, sorry about that, and thank you for requesting!)

JS108 translation: Murong Hui
Murong Hui
Murong Hui, courtesy name Yiluogui, was a Xianbei from Jicheng in Changli. His ancestors were descendants of the Youxiong clan, who had long dwelt among the northern barbarians, settling in the plains of Zimeng, known as the Eastern Hu. Later, they rose to power alongside the Xiongnu, commanding over 200,000 archers, with customs and official titles similar to the Xiongnu. During the Qin and Han dynasties, they were defeated by the Xiongnu and sought refuge in the Xianbei Mountains, from which they took their name. His great-grandfather Mohuba, at the beginning of Wei, led various tribes to settle in Liaoxi. For his meritorious service in following Emperor Xuan's campaign against the Gongsun clan, he was appointed as the King of Shuaiyi and established his state north of Jicheng. At that time, many in Yan and Dai wore the buyao crown. Mohuba saw and admired it, so he gathered his hair and adopted the crown. The tribes thus called him Buyao, which later became corrupted in pronunciation to Murong. Another account says the name Murong came from "admiring the virtue of heaven and earth" and "succeeding the appearance of the three lights." His grandfather Muyan was the Left Wise Prince. His father Shegui was promoted to Xianbei Chanyu for his achievement in preserving Liucheng, and moved his settlement to northern Liaodong, whereupon they gradually adopted the customs of the Central Plains.
Hui was tall and imposing from a young age, with a handsome appearance, standing eight chi tall, and possessed heroic qualities and great magnanimity. Zhang Hua, the General Who Pacifies the North, was known for his ability to judge character. When Hui, still wearing a youth's cap, went to pay his respects, Zhang was greatly impressed and said to him: "When you come of age, you will surely become an extraordinary vessel of your time, one who will rectify difficulties and save the age." He then gave Hui his own cap and hairpin, and they parted with deep mutual regard. After Shegui's death, his younger brother Nai usurped the position and plotted to kill Hui. Hui fled in secret to escape harm. Later, the people of the state killed Nai and welcomed Hui back to establish him as their leader.
Initially, as Shegui had harbored resentment against the Yuwen Xianbei, Hui sought to settle his predecessor's grievance and petitioned to attack them. Emperor Wu refused permission. Enraged, Hui invaded Liaoxi, killing and plundering many. The Emperor dispatched Youzhou forces to suppress Hui, and they fought at Feiru, where Hui's forces suffered a major defeat. Thereafter, he continued to raid Changli annually without cease. He also led forces east to attack Fuyu, where King Yilü committed suicide. Hui razed their state city and took over ten thousand people captive. The Eastern Barbarian Colonel He Kan sent Supervisor Jia Shen to escort and establish Yilü's son as king. Hui dispatched his general Sun Ding with cavalry to intercept them. Shen fought fiercely and beheaded Ding, thus restoring the state of Fuyu.
Hui then consulted with his people, saying: "Since my ancestors' time, we have served the Middle Kingdom. Moreover, Chinese and barbarians follow different principles, and there is a natural distinction between the strong and weak. How can we compete with Jin? Why not seek peace instead of harming our people?" He then sent envoys to submit. The Emperor commended this and appointed him Commander of the Xianbei. Hui paid respects to the Eastern Barbarian Prefecture, wearing Chinese attire and observing the etiquette of scholars. He Kan received him with troops in formation, whereupon Hui changed into barbarian clothing before entering. When asked why, Hui replied: "If the host does not observe proper etiquette, why should the guest?" Upon hearing this, He Kan felt ashamed and treated him with increased respect and caution. At this time, the Eastern Hu Yuwen Xianbei and Duan clan, fearing Hui's growing power and influence, frequently conducted raids. Hui responded with humble words and generous gifts to pacify them.
In the tenth year of Taikang (289), Hui relocated again to Mount Qing by the Tu River. As Dajicheng was the ancient site of Emperor Zhuanxu, he moved to settle there in the fourth year of Yuankang (294). He taught his people agriculture and sericulture, and established laws and institutions similar to those of the Upper Kingdom. During the Yongning period, when Yan experienced severe flooding, Hui opened his granaries to provide relief, saving the people of the Youzhou region. When the Son of Heaven heard of this, he commended him and bestowed ceremonial robes.
In early Tai'an, Yuwen Mogui sent his brother Quyun to raid the border cities, while his separate commander Da Suyan attacked and plundered various tribes. Hui personally attacked and defeated them. Enraged, Suyan led 100,000 troops to besiege Jicheng. The people were terrified and lost their will to resist. Hui said: "Though Suyan has gathered troops like dogs, sheep, and ants, his army lacks discipline and order. He is already within my calculations. My lords, you need only fight with all your might and have no cause for worry." He then personally donned armor, rode out to attack them, and greatly defeated Suyan, pursuing them for a hundred li and capturing or beheading over ten thousand men.
At the beginning of Yongjia, Hui proclaimed himself Great Chanyu of the Xianbei. In Liaodong, Governor Pang Ben killed Eastern Barbarian Colonel Li Zhen due to personal grudges. The frontier Xianbei leaders Su Lian and Mu Jin, using vengeance for Zhen as a pretext but actually intending to cause chaos, attacked and captured various counties, killing and plundering officials and commoners. Governor Yuan Qian suffered repeated defeats, and Colonel Feng Shi fearfully sued for peace. The raids continued for years, causing people to lose their livelihoods, with refugees continuously seeking refuge with Hui.
Hui's son Han said to him: "Among ways to seek hegemony, none surpasses aiding the king. Throughout history, all successful rulers have relied on this principle. Now Lian and Jin are running rampant, the royal army has been defeated, and the common people are being slaughtered - what could be worse? These petty men use Pang Ben as an excuse while actually taking advantage to become bandits. Lord Feng seeks peace by offering to punish Ben, yet the harm only grows deeper. Liaodong has been falling for almost two years, the central plains are in chaos, and the provincial armies repeatedly suffer defeat. Now is the time to aid the king. The Chanyu should display the might of the Nine Campaigns, save those in dire straits, enumerate the crimes of Lian and Jin, and gather righteous forces to punish them. Above, we can restore Liaodong; below, we can absorb these two tribes. This will demonstrate loyalty to the dynasty while bringing benefit to our state. This is the beginning of our grand plan, and will ultimately lead to success among the princes."
Hui followed this advice. That day, he led cavalry to attack Lian and Jin, greatly defeating and beheading them. The two tribes all surrendered. He relocated them to Jicheng, established Liaodong Commandery, and returned.
When Emperor Huai was in distress at Pingyang, Wang Jun, acting on imperial authority, appointed Hui as Cavalier Attendant-in-Ordinary, Champion General, Grand Commander of the Vanguard, and Great Chanyu, but Hui declined. During the Jianxing period, Emperor Min sent envoys to appoint Hui as General Who Guards the Army and Duke of both Changli and Liaodong. At the beginning of Jianwu, Emperor Yuan, acting on imperial authority, appointed Hui as Bearer of the Insignia, Cavalier Attendant-in-Ordinary, Commander of Military Affairs for the Various Barbarians and Refugees of Liaozuo, General of Dragon Flight, Great Chanyu, and Duke of Changli, but Hui declined these honors.
General Who Conquers the Barbarians Lu Chang advised Hui: "Now that both capitals have fallen and the Emperor is in distress, Langye's authority in Jiangdong is truly what people's lives depend on. Your Excellency commands the northern regions beyond the sea and controls this entire area, yet various tribes still rely on their numbers to take up arms and have not submitted to civilization, perhaps because your office lacks imperial mandate and they consider themselves strong. Now you should send envoys to Langye, encourage support for the great succession, and then spread imperial orders to attack the guilty. Who would dare not follow!"
Hui approved of this advice and sent his Chief Clerk Wang Ji across the sea to encourage support. When the Emperor [Yuan] ascended to the throne, he sent Ceremonial Officer Tao Liao to reaffirm the previous appointments, conferring upon Hui the titles of General and Chanyu, though Hui firmly declined the ducal enfeoffment.
At this time, with both capitals having fallen and Youzhou and Jizhou having been overrun, Hui maintained clear laws and governance, and humbly welcomed refugees. Many displaced officials and commoners came to him with their families. Hui established commanderies to govern these refugees: people from Jizhou were organized into Jiyang Commandery, those from Yuzhou into Chengzhou Commandery, those from Qingzhou into Yingqiu Commandery, and those from Bingzhou into Tangguo Commandery.
He then selected talented individuals and entrusted them with administrative duties:
- Pei Yi of Hedong, Lu Chang of Dai Commandery, and Yang Dan of Beiping served as chief strategists
- Feng Xian of Beihai, You Sui of Guangping, Xifang Qian of Beiping, Feng Chou of Bohai, Song Shi of Xihe, and Pei Kai of Hedong served as his chief ministers
- Feng Yi of Bohai, Song Gai of Pingyuan, Huangfu Ji of Anding, and Miao Kai of Lanling were appointed to key positions for their literary talents
- Zhu Zuoche of Kuaiji, Humu Yi of Taishan, and Kong Zuan of Lu State were treated as honored guests for their traditional virtues
- Liu Zan of Pingyuan, being well-versed in Confucian studies, was appointed as Director of the Eastern School, where the heir apparent Huang led noble youths in studying under him
During breaks from governing, Hui personally attended these lectures. As a result, people sang praises on the roads, and courtesy and deference flourished.
At this time, Cui Bi, the Inspector of Pingzhou and Colonel of Eastern Barbarians, considered himself a prominent southern official and hoped to gather followers, but no refugees came to him. Suspecting Hui of detaining them, he secretly allied with Goguryeo and the Yuwen and Duan states, plotting to destroy Hui and divide his territory.
In early Taixing, the three states attacked Hui. Hui said: "They believe Cui Bi's empty words, seeking temporary gain, and come as a loose alliance. Without unified leadership or mutual submission, I will surely defeat them. However, their initial assault will be fierce, and they hope us to fight quickly. If we counter-attack directly, we'll fall into their trap. If we remain calm and wait, they'll grow suspicious of each other. First, they'll suspect I'm conspiring with Bi to destroy them; second, they'll suspect one among their three states has a Han-Wei style plot with me. Once their morale is confused, victory will be certain."
When the three states attacked Jicheng, Hui closed the gates and didn't fight. He sent wine and cattle to entertain the Yuwen forces, loudly announcing: "Cui Bi's envoy arrived yesterday." As expected, the other two states suspected Yuwen of collaborating with Hui and withdrew. Yuwen Xiduguan said: "Though the two states have left, I alone will take their territories - what need have I of others?" He surrounded the city with camps stretching thirty li.
Hui assigned elite troops to Huang to lead the vanguard; Han led elite cavalry as the surprise force to strike from the side directly into their camps; Hui advanced with the main formation. Xiduguan , overconfident in his numbers, failed to take precautions. When Hui's army arrived, he had just begun to organize resistance. As the vanguards engaged, Han had already entered their camps and set them ablaze. Their troops panicked and were thoroughly defeated. Xiduguan barely escaped, and all his troops were captured.
A camp guard then found the Emperor's jade seal with three knobs, which Hui sent to Jianye with Chief Clerk Pei Yi. Fearing Hui's revenge, Cui Bi sent his nephew Tao to falsely congratulate Hui. When envoys from the three states also arrived requesting peace, saying "This wasn't our intention; Inspector Cui instructed us," Hui showed Tao the siege locations and threatened him with troops, saying: "Your uncle instructed the three states to destroy me - why do you come with false congratulations?" Tao, frightened, confessed everything.
Hui then sent Tao back to persuade Bi, saying: "Surrender is the best strategy; fleeing is the worst." He followed with his army. Bi, along with several dozen horsemen, abandoned his family and fled to Goguryeo. Hui accepted the surrender of all Bi's followers, relocated Tao and Gao Zhan and others to Jicheng, and treated them with the courtesy due to guests. The following year, when Goguryeo raided Liaodong, Hui sent troops to attack and defeat them.
When Pei Yi returned from Jianye, the Emperor sent envoys to appoint Hui as Commander of Military Affairs in Pingzhou, General Who Pacifies the North, and Inspector of Pingzhou, increasing his fief by 2,000 households. Soon after, he was further appointed as Envoy of the Imperial Insignia, Commander of Military Affairs for Eastern Barbarians in Youzhou, General of Chariots and Cavalry, and Shepherd of Pingzhou. He was promoted to Duke of Liaodong Commandery with a fief of 10,000 households, while retaining his positions as Attendant-in-Ordinary and Chanyu. He received an iron certificate with vermillion writing, was granted authority over the eastern coastal regions, and was ordered to establish official positions and appoint administrators for Pingzhou.
When Duan Mobo first took control of his state, he failed to maintain proper defenses. Hui sent Huang to launch a surprise attack, entering Lingzhi, where they captured fine horses and valuable treasures before returning.
When Shi Le sent envoys to establish peaceful relations, Hui rejected them and sent their envoys to Jianye. Enraged, Shi Le sent Yuwen Qidegui to attack Hui, but Hui dispatched Huang to resist. He appointed Pei Yi as Commander of the Right Division, with Suo Tou leading the right wing, and ordered his younger son Ren to advance from Pingguo to Bolin as the left wing to attack Qidegui. They defeated him and captured all his troops. Taking advantage of their victory, they captured the state's capital, seizing resources worth hundreds of millions and relocating tens of thousands of households back to their territory.
When Emperor Cheng ascended to the throne, Hui was additionally appointed as Palace Attendant and promoted to the rank of Special Advanced. In the fifth year of Xianhe (330), he was further appointed as Commander of the Palace Forces with Equal Authority as the Three Excellencies, but he firmly declined to accept this position.
Hui once remarked casually: "The law courts hold people's lives in the balance, so we must handle them with utmost care. Worthy and virtuous people are the foundation of the state, so we must treat them with respect. Agriculture is the basis of the nation, so we must give it urgent attention. Wine, sensual pleasures, and flattery are extremely destructive to virtue, so we must guard against them." He then wrote "Family Instructions" containing several thousand words to elaborate on these principles.
He sent an envoy with a letter to Grand Commander Tao Kan, which said:
"To Your Excellency:
You uphold virtue and display authority, pacifying and stabilizing the realm. You devote yourself to both civil and military affairs, keeping soldiers and horses in good condition. I deeply admire and look up to you, and my respect grows ever stronger. The royal road is long and treacherous, and we are separated by vast distances. Whenever I gaze at the river's edge, I crane my neck looking into the distance.
Heaven has sent down hardships, and disasters have come one after another. The old capital could not be defended and became the court of barbarians, forcing the imperial carriage to relocate and seek refuge in Wu and Chu. The Great Jin dynasty, which was established to last for countless generations, has not lost Heaven's mandate, as shown clearly in celestial signs. Thus, righteous and valiant men harbor deep indignation. Despite my meager achievements, I have received special favor from the state. Yet I have failed both to sweep away the Jie barbarians above and to personally face the nation's crisis below. Moreover, treacherous ministers were allowed to repeatedly threaten the imperial capital. Wang Dun initiated calamity first, and Su Jun spread his poison afterward. Their brutality exceeded that of Dong Zhuo, and their wickedness surpassed that of Li Jue and Guo Si. Throughout the realm, who does not share in this anger! I am deeply puzzled that our civil and military officials, who enjoy such imperial honors, have been unable to eliminate the bandits of the Central Plains and wash away the shame of our nation.
You, my lord, have established your base in Jiangyang and shown your brilliance in Jing and Heng. You wield authority like Duke Ye and possess the determination of Bao Xu, yet you have allowed criminals like Bai Gong and Wu Yuan to reach the extremes of their violence - this would make even Qiuming ashamed. Even the likes of Zizhong of the small state of Chu were ashamed when their ruler was weak and the ministers could not match their predecessors. They disciplined themselves and warned others to subdue Chen and Zheng. Even Wen Zhong and Fan Li were able to assist Goujian and achieve victory at Huangchi. How much more so now, when Wu's territory is full of talented people standing shoulder to shoulder - yet they do not support the sage ruler and advance north across the Yangtze.
With righteous proclamations, we should attack the rebellious Jie barbarians, issue commands to rally the warriors of the old states, and recruit those who wish to preserve our foundations. Would this not be as easy as leaves falling with the wind or wheels rolling downhill? Moreover, when the Sun family first rose, they used the forces from Changsha to defeat Dong Zhuo, aiming to support the Han court. Although they encountered setbacks and their noble aspirations were not fulfilled, their original intentions were sincere, even to the point of disregarding their own lives.
When Sun Quan held Yangzhou and Yuezhou, he relied externally on Zhou Yu and Zhang Zhao, internally on Gu Yong and Lu Xun, resisted Wei successfully, and captured Xiangyang. Since then, successive rulers have all been able to pressure Xuzhou and Yuzhou, causing the Wei court to eat their meals late with worry. I don't know if today's talented people in the Jiangnan region are hiding their wisdom and concealing their strategic abilities? Or have the great examples of Lü Meng and Ling Tong been lost to time?
Moreover, now that the violent Jie barbarians are brutal, the people of the Central Plains are under urgent pressure, their situation as precarious as stacked eggs. The enemy's false authority is something the people's hearts have already abandoned - they show weakness that can easily be shaken. Although Wang Lang and Yuan Shu were deceptive, their foundations were shallow and weak, and disaster came swiftly - these are all events that you, my lord, have witnessed.
Minister Wang is pure and has few desires, skilled at self-preservation - in the past, Cao Can also followed this path and was known for his principle of 'maintaining uniformity.' Lord Yu holds the honored position of the emperor's uncle and bears the responsibility like Shen Bo, transcending worldly matters with clear wisdom and discretion. During these times of invasion and trouble, I have received generations of favor from the Great Jin, yet I regret being in a remote region, unable to aid the sacred court, only able to set my heart toward the distant capital and feel indignation when facing the wind.
Today, among all those looked up to within the empire, only you, my lord, have sufficient influence to tip the balance like in the times of Chu and Han. If you would exert all your effort and deploy the forces of the five provinces, occupy the outskirts of Yanzhou and Yuzhou, and cause those inclined toward righteousness to turn their weapons around and lay down their arms, then the Jie bandits would surely be destroyed and our national shame eliminated. In my region, I dare not spare any effort in service. However, advancing alone with a small force is insufficient to make the enemy fear both front and rear attacks, and those loyal subjects who wish to respond from within have no way to act. Therefore, I present these thoughts from afar, though words cannot fully express everything."
Murong Hui's envoy encountered storms and was lost at sea. Afterward, Hui rewrote his previous letter and sent it along with memorials from over thirty officials, including Feng Chou, the Colonel of Eastern Barbarians, and Han Jiao, the Acting Minister of Liaodong, to Tao Kan's office, saying:
"Throughout history, few nations and families have not experienced decline after reaching their peak. Since the Great Jin dynasty's rise to power, it conquered Mount Hun and Hui, with military prowess surpassing historical records. However, at the end of Emperor Hui's reign, court factions created difficulties, disaster struck the capital region, and rifts formed within the imperial clan. This allowed the Jie bandits to exploit the weakness, overthrowing the Central Plains. The old capital fell into ruin, imperial tombs were desecrated, causing both humans and spirits to grieve and both the living and deceased to feel outrage. In the past, even when the Xianyun were strong and the Xiongnu were at their peak, none were as brutal as today's Jie bandits, who trample across Chinese territory and falsely claim imperial titles.
Heaven has blessed the Jin dynasty and bestowed it with outstanding talents. The General of Cavalry and Chariots, Murong Hui, has governed his state since his youth, remaining loyal to the royal house. He is wise, trustworthy, respectful, and solemn, with aspirations to establish merit. When the empire fragmented and the imperial court relocated, Emperor Yuan initiated the restoration and Emperor Su continued the lineage, pacifying the regions beyond the Yangtze. Although Hui is separated by mountains and seas, and cut off by the Jie bandits, he constantly looks toward the capital with his heart set on it, losing sleep with concerns for the state rather than himself. Tributes have been sent continuously, with ships filling the routes, and military campaigns have never ceased, always serving righteous causes.
Now the Jie bandits' evil reaches to the heavens, relying on their barbaric kind, establishing bases in Zhao and Wei, and extending their control over Yan and Qi. Although Hui leads righteous forces to punish these great rebels, even when Guan Zhong served Qi, he said that his honors were insufficient to command his subordinates. How much more so for Hui, who supports the royal house and has achievements worthy of a hegemon, yet holds a low position and light rank, not yet receiving the Nine Honors? This is not the way to show special favor to frontier nobles and encourage extraordinary merit.
Currently, imperial edicts are cut off and the royal road is dangerous and distant, with tribute missions taking years to complete their journeys. Now the old territory of Yan - bounded by the desert in the north, reaching Lelang in the east, extending to Mount Dai in the west, and stretching to Ji region in the south - has all fallen under barbarian control and is no longer part of the imperial domain. The officials and commanders believe we should follow the precedent of the Zhou Dynasty and the early Han period by promoting Hui to King of Yan and appointing him as Grand General. This would allow him to command all divisions from above and reduce enemy territory from below, causing the people of Jizhou to submit upon hearing of it. If Hui could receive such imperial orders, he could lead various states, oppose the barbarians, and achieve accomplishments like those of Duke Huan of Qi and Duke Wen of Jin. If it benefits the state, this authority can be granted exclusively.
However, Hui has remained firmly modest and maintained his integrity at an even higher level. Whenever honors were bestowed by imperial edict, he would decline them for years, and we officials cannot force him to accept. What we present here is not merely to seek elevation of status; rather, our sincere thoughts are truly for the nation's strategy."
Tao Kan replied to Feng Chou and others, saying in essence: "The General of Cavalry and Chariots has put the state before himself, sending continuous tributes. When the Jie bandits sought peace, he detained and sent their envoys. He campaigned westward against the Duan state, northward beyond the frontier, pacified the distant Suotou, and presented tributes from remote regions. Only the northern regions remain unsubmitted, against which he has repeatedly sent campaigns. I also understand that regarding official titles in the east, ranks are equal at all levels, with neither authority to command others when advancing nor proper hierarchical distinctions when retreating. The proposal to promote the General to King of Yan has been fully explained. Advancing rank based on merit is an ancient system. Although the General has not yet been able to enforce official authority, his loyalty and righteousness are complete. Now that this memorial has been submitted for imperial consideration, whether fast or slow, it should await heaven's decision."
The court discussions were not concluded. In the eighth year (333), Hui passed away, and the matter was dropped. He was sixty-five years old and had ruled for forty-nine years. The Emperor sent envoys to posthumously bestow upon him the titles of Grand General and Palace Attendant with Equal Authority of the Three Excellencies, with the posthumous title of Xiang. When Jun later usurped the throne, he falsely bestowed the posthumous title of Emperor Wuxuan.
Biography of Pei Yi
Pei Yi, courtesy name Wenji, was from Wenxi in Hedong. His father Chang served as the Colonel Director of Retainers. Yi was upright and capable, and was progressively promoted to Gentleman of the Imperial Secretariat, then to Gentleman Attendant at the Yellow Gates, and Governor of Xingyang.
When chaos engulfed the realm, Yi's elder brother Wu was serving as Governor of Xuantu. Yi then requested to become the Governor of Changli. After serving in the commandery for some time, Wu died, and Yi was summoned back. He then accompanied Wu's son Kai to escort the funeral procession south. When they reached Liaoxi, they found the roads blocked, so they sought refuge with Murong Hui.
At that time, many displaced scholars who saw Murong Hui's emerging power were uncertain whether to stay or leave. Yi was the first to establish proper relations with Hui, setting an example for other scholars to follow. Hui was very pleased and appointed Yi as Chief Clerk, entrusting him with military and state affairs.
When Xiduguan's bandits approached and besieged the city, causing unrest both inside and outside, Hui sought counsel from Yi. Yi said: "Although Xiduguan commands a large force, his army lacks discipline and his troops have no formation. If we select elite soldiers and strike while they are unprepared, we can capture them easily." Hui followed this advice and successfully raided the enemy camp. This greatly enhanced Hui's prestige and authority. When he wanted to send envoys to Jianye to report this victory, he carefully selected his messenger and ordered Yi to carry out this diplomatic mission.
Initially, the court regarded Hui as merely a frontier chieftain due to his remote location. When Yi arrived as envoy, he eloquently described Hui's military prowess and noted how talented individuals from across the realm were serving under him. This changed the court's entire perspective.
When Yi was about to return, the Emperor tried to retain him to test his loyalty. Yi declined, saying: "I and my family have long enjoyed imperial favor and served in the central government. Due to circumstances, I found myself in distant lands. Now that I have the fortune to see the court and receive gracious orders to stay in the capital, this would indeed be a great personal honor. However, considering that the imperial residence has been displaced and the imperial tombs dishonored, General Murong Hui, though far away, remains devoted to the royal house with a sincerity that moves heaven and earth. He is preparing to pacify the central plains and welcome back the imperial carriage, which is why he sent an envoy thousands of miles to demonstrate his loyalty. If you retain me now, he might think the court looks down upon him in his remote location and doubts his sincere heart, causing his righteous spirit to waver. Therefore, I, your humble servant, forget myself for the state's sake and wish to return to deliver my report."
The Emperor said, "Your words are right," and sent Yi back.
Later, Hui told his officials, "Chief Clerk Pei's reputation carries weight in the central court, yet he humbled himself to serve here - isn't this heaven's gift to me?" Yi was later appointed Minister of Liaodong and then Governor of Lelang.
Biography of Gao Zhan
Gao Zhan, courtesy name Ziqian, was from Tiao in Bohai. From a young age, he showed exceptional talent and intelligence, and grew to be eight chi and two cun tall. During the Guangxi period, he was appointed as Gentleman of the Imperial Secretariat. When the Yongjia chaos broke out, he returned to his hometown and discussed with the elders, saying: "Now that imperial authority is weak and warfare spreads everywhere, this commandery with its fertile land and natural defenses of rivers and seas will surely become a target for bandits during times of war and famine. This is not a place to seek safety. Wang Pengzu is already established in You and Ji, controlling the resources of Yan and Dai, with strong military and rich state - we can rely on him. What do you all think of this?" Everyone agreed with his proposal.
He then led several thousand households to migrate north to Youzhou with his uncle Yin. Later, finding Wang Jun's governance inconsistent, he sought refuge with Cui Bi and followed him to Liaodong.
When Cui Bi plotted with the three states to attack Murong Hui, Zhan strongly advised against it, but Bi did not listen. After Bi's defeat, Zhan surrendered to Hui along with others. Hui appointed him as a general, but Zhan claimed illness and declined to serve.
Hui, respecting Zhan's character and bearing, visited him frequently to comfort him, saying: "Your illness lies here [in your heart], not elsewhere. Now that the Son of Heaven has been displaced, the Four Seas are falling apart, and the common people are in chaos, not knowing where to turn. I wish to work with you gentlemen to restore the imperial house, eliminate the oppressors from the two capitals, escort the Emperor back from Wu and Hui, pacify all directions, and achieve merits comparable to the ancient heroes. This is my heart's desire and my wish. You are from a great clan of the Central Plains and of noble status - you should be deeply concerned and sleep on your weapon waiting for the dawn. Why do you harbor reservations about the distinction between Chinese and barbarians? Besides, the Great Yu came from the Western Qiang, and King Wen was born among the Eastern Yi. One should only consider a person's ambition and strategy - how can different customs be a reason to withhold one's loyalty?"
Zhan continued to claim serious illness, which greatly displeased Hui. Moreover, Zhan had a conflict with Song Gai, who secretly urged Hui to eliminate him. When Zhan heard of this, he became increasingly uneasy and eventually died of anxiety.

He does not do anything halfway—when he loves, he loves like it’s his entire existence, like you are the air in his lungs and the blood in his veins. Obsession isn’t just a side effect of this yanderes love; it’s the foundation. He craves complete enmeshment, a connection so deep that it blurs the line between where he ends and you begins.
Control is essential—not necessarily in a domineering way (unless he wants it to be), but in the sense that he needs to feel secure in your devotion. He doesn't share. The idea of you having many friends, especially those who could threaten his position, makes him deeply uncomfortable. Love, to him, isn’t just affection; it’s a religion, a force that dictates every action, every thought, every moment.
This yandere is not afraid of extremes. If you ask him to move mountains, he will. If you threaten to leave, He would go to the ends of the earth to keep you. His love is suffocating in the way that a warm embrace can be—comforting, intoxicating, but inescapable. It’s both worship and ownership. You are his, and he is yours, and any deviation from that truth is unacceptable.
At the same time, he demands the same level of devotion in return. Anything less than full, undivided attention feels like a betrayal. If he's not your priority, he doesn't consider you to be worthy of being his. His standards are impossibly high, not just because he expects a lot, but because he gives just as much—if not more. If you manage to truly earn this yanderes love, you have something rare, something powerful, but it comes with a price: total submission to the intensity that is his. Or the ability to control it in the way you want
Tumblr media
When not in a relationship, this yandere is known to be calculating, self-assured, and entirely self-sufficient. He doesn't rely on others for validation because he knows exactly who he is, and he refuses to be anything less than the version of himself that he has deemed superior. He doesn't seek approval, nor does he beg for attention—he commands it, and if it isn’t given willingly, then it isn’t worth my time.
He is detached, but not in the way that suggests apathy—no, he chooses what he invests in, who he allows into his space, and where he directs his energy. Most people bore him, either too predictable or too shallow to be worth entertaining. He can play along, sure, but it’s a game, and he always knows when to fold before it wastes more of his time.
This yandere is sharp, both in intellect and in tongue. He can see through people easily, and has no patience for mediocrity, false confidence, or performative arrogance. If someone wants to match wits with this yandere, they better bring something substantial, because he will pick them apart with a smirk and a handful of well-placed words.
Control is important—this yandere doesn't like situations where he doesn't have the upper hand, and he makes sure that, more often than not, he does. This yandere doesn't show his vulnerabilities easily, and he certainly doesn’t hand over power without good reason. If someone thinks they know him, they’re probably wrong. He lets people see what he wants them to see, nothing more, nothing less.
That said, this yandere is not entirely emotionless—he just doesn’t waste feelings on the undeserving. He values loyalty, but does not give it freely. If someone proves themselves, this yandere will go to hell and back for them, but they better be worth it. He exists on my own terms, and he will never be anything less than exactly what he chooses to be.
Tumblr media
When adopting this yandere, avoid Mediocrity wrapped in arrogance. People who think they’re something special when they’re barely a footnote in the grand scheme of things. There’s nothing more insufferable than someone who overestimates their worth, demands attention they haven’t earned, or parades around with a confidence built on nothing but delusion.
I can’t stand those who lack self-awareness—people who are oblivious to their own flaws yet quick to point out others’. The ones who think being loud makes them interesting, who mistake stubbornness for strength, who crave validation but pretend they don’t. If you’re going to be unbearable, at least own it.
Also, weakness disguised as righteousness—people who preach about morals, fairness, or “being the better person,” but it’s just a mask for their cowardice. If you can’t fight for yourself, if you let others walk all over you and call it kindness, don’t expect me to respect you.
And worst of all? Those who try to manipulate but lack the intelligence to do it well. If you’re going to play games, at least be competent. Watching someone think they’re being subtle when they’re embarrassingly transparent? That’s just pathetic.
Tumblr media
If you're looking to adopt this yandere, please know they are drawn to genuine, undeniable presence. Someone who doesn’t just exist in a space but owns it without trying. To him, it’s not about arrogance—it’s about certainty. A person who knows who they are, who doesn’t need to prove themselves to anyone because their existence alone commands attention.
This yandere admires intelligence, but not the kind that’s flaunted—true intelligence, the type that seeps into every word, every action, effortlessly. Wit that cuts sharp, curiosity that never dulls, a mind that refuses to stagnate. Someone who can challenge him, make him think, make him feel without even trying.
Control—over themselves, over situations, over him if they’re good enough. Restraint is far more impressive than recklessness. Power is nothing without precision.
And, above all, intensity. A person who feels deeply, who doesn’t do anything halfway. Obsession, devotion, the inability to love in moderation—that’s the kind of person this yandere can respect, the kind of person who’s worth his attention.
This yandere was brought back to the adoption center about a year ago.
This Yanderes fun facts!
Big spoon or little spoon
This yandere is both a little spoon and a big spoon.
Introverted or extroverted
This yandere is introverted.
Can't cook or makes dinner
This yandere would make dinner.
Charismatic or terrible at flirting
This yandere would be extremely charismatic and extremely flirty.
Tumblr media
This yandere can't stand Mediocrity. People who are content with being average—who don’t strive for anything beyond what’s handed to them, who lack passion, ambition, or depth. They find nothing more unbearable than a person who has no intensity, no fire, no presence.
Second to that? This yandere can't stand empty words. People who speak just to fill silence, who say things they don’t mean, who promise without intent, who use grand declarations as if they hold weight when they don’t. They believe words should have purpose. If you don’t mean it, don’t say it.
If this yandere had a superpower, they would have the ability to command elements, fire, water, air, and earth—not just in the way most people think. He wouldn’t be some show-off throwing flames for attention or making waves for the hell of it. No. He would make those elements work for him, bend them to his will when he needed them, as an extension of his own power. This yandere would burn bridges that aren’t worth crossing, drown anything standing in his way, create storms to shake things up when they get too predictable, and reshape the world around him as he sees fit. To be the chaos, to command nature itself as though it’s his servant.

War Cry
Commissioned by the lovely Veritaventis Yan! Kaeya Alberich x OC
“Khaenri'ah, huh? You sure know a lot! The legacy of Khaenri'ah is long gone. The sinners are all that's left, and they're not worth mentioning.”
Tumblr media
i. “Sacrifices must be made.”
Briony would like to say she’s lived to see many things.
Her life has long made its way through the wheel of fortune; and with each high and low she has always endured. Unfortunate deaths, nasty slander, betrayals from those she thought she could trust. What’s a little apocalypse on top of it all?
Where is her wheel pointing now?
She’s studied Khaenri’ah. Built by humans, for humans–she thought reading through all the old texts and inscriptions would have prepared her for–for something. A sign. A prophecy of some sorts. Anything that could have prepared her for fire, screaming, and terrible monsters heard only in stories. What good does being the leading expert on the topic do if it doesn’t help you?
It was like the gates to hell had opened: hilichurls, abyss mages, heralds, dark shadow knights, and all manners of monsters flooded the stone streets. The skies turned dark, ominous purple clouds shutting out the sun. The ground trembled as they marched amidst the screams of frightened citizens. They did not falter or stop, even as people ran this way and that.
She’s one of the luckier ones, she knows. At least she had a Vision. The abyss forces did not hold back their intimidation, whether that meant setting fire to innocent families’ houses or cutting down those who happened to be in their path. It was all she could do to pull people out of the way of monsters.
Last she was able to remember during the chaos, Razor and Fischl were trying to hold back abyss mages from the elder Adventure Guild members while Bennett was doing his best to evacuate them to safety. That was all she was able to catch before she was lifted away screaming and pounding on Kaeya’s back. That bastard. She thought nothing could phase her anymore after her adopted brother attempted to sabotage her career in the name of family. Evidently, she was proven wrong.
She sucks in a deep breath, knuckles taut around the kitchen counter. Focus. The ingredients sit in front of her tauntingly. Apples, beef, carrots…she’s made this stew too many times to count. At this point, she’s sure she could make the dish blind.
First, the vegetables and beef. The knife in her hands feels heavy as she chops the carrots and dice the apples. Did the soldiers who came through the gates feel the same with their blades? Even as people cried out, they did not blink as they slashed through flesh as they marched on. Those abyss heralds–how could they have been humans if they could so easily cut down their own?
Focus! She shakes her head violently. The meat and vegetables are done, so now it’s time to start caramelizing them along with the aromatics. The hiss of the butter and garlic clears her mind if only for a moment. Her hands drop in the carrots and onions automatically, moving the spoon to evenly distribute them across the bottom.
Bennet, Fischl, and Razor, were they okay? They were still so young–even if they were seasoned adventurers and fighters, they cannot take on a full legion of hilichurls and abyss mages by themselves. Archons, what if they–no, they wouldn’t do that. They wouldn’t sink so low to harm mere children…would they?
Venti, where was he in the chaos? The steak sizzles as the air is filled with a hearty aroma as she makes sure to sear each side. The apples and potatoes follow after. Briony knows that Venti is more than the weak bard he presents himself as, but she worries nonetheless. Poetic ballads do not halt the hearts of tyrants and monsters.
Almost done. She pours in water, adding seasoning and herbs, before putting on the lid. Jean. Was she okay? She once again finds herself clutching the counter, staring off into nothing. If the mere townspeople were nothing more than cannon fodder to the troops that stormed through, then she can only imagine what has happened to the Knights of Favonius order, the protectors of Mondstadt.
“Smells good~” Warm air puffs into her ear and her world screeches to a stop.
The knife in her hands finds its way upon a defined jugular.
If there’s anything she knows, it’s that Kaeya loves his games. She swears it’s some way to stimulate the constantly active brain that he has. (If she had to make it into a thesis report, she bet she could write it in a day) So she knows that she shouldn’t give him the reactions he wants. But somehow, he just always knows how to get under her skin. Is it his inherent ability to be annoying? Or an acquired talent? Either way, it’s infuriating.
Kaeya grins, despite the blade pin pricking his skin and letting out beads of ruby red blood.
“Whoa there, honey. This is quite a greeting for you.”
“Maybe you shouldn’t be sneaking up on people in the first place.” She bites back.
“What can I say? You just make the cutest faces when you’re surprised.”
She scrunches her face in disgust, and he laughs heartily, as if he weren’t close to having his throat slit.
“What’s for dinner?” Kaeya tilts his head as she continues to glare. He opts to lean around to check the pot, and turns to her with a cat-like grin on his face.
“Let me guess. Northern Apple stew?”
She wants to smack that smug look off his face. As if he had any right to talk about how she turned to her comfort food to destress. She could write essays upon essays on Kaeya’s inordinate love of wine and all things alcoholic and how cause and effect from personality and trauma played into it.
“If you keep acting like that, I’m not letting you have any.” She brusquely replies, removing the pot from the stove and putting out the fire. Kaeya follows her to the quaint dining table as she sets down the pot.
He hums. “Why, you break my heart. You know I love your cooking more than anything.”
Not enough to keep your loyalty to Mondstadt, but she keeps her mouth shut. She’s so drained, she’s not sure she can play tonight’s round of psychological warfare. Instead, she watches as Kaeya sets out the cutlery and plates, waving at her to sit down.
Dinner is strangely quiet, however. She expects some kind of stupid quip as they cut into the beef and spear a fork through the potatoes. Or an exaggerated re-telling of his day of work; maybe even just a fantastical story of pirates and mermaids. But there’s none, and she finds the dead silence more unsettling than Kaeya’s smooth timber.
“You must hate me, huh?”
She pauses, fork halfway to her mouth. Putting it down, she ruminates on what she should say.
Yes, is the first thing that comes to her mind. No, is what follows after–because even after everything he’s done, he’s one of the few to see her for her without any rose filters or expectations. She can breathe around him, talk to him without fearing the weight of her words. After spending years in stifling academic seminars and upright noble balls, Kaeya was a person she could trust to be impartial and free.
“It’d be hard for me to say that I don’t hate you right now.” She manages evenly.
Kaeya observes her face then closes his eyes, no doubt thinking about her statement.
“I won’t ask you to forgive me,” he begins, “Just know that I had my own reasons. And this is the best outcome.”
Something in her snaps. From nerves, from anxiety, or just from being tired of having to deal with Kaeya for so long, she’s not sure.
“The best outcome is Mondstadt being burned down?” She slams her hands on the table, standing up. “Innocent people have been assaulted, ‘all for the best outcome’? Are you hearing yourself right now?”
Kaeya’s starry eye reflects her visage angry and out of breath, sending shudders down her spine.
“The townspeople have been mostly unharmed.” Her eyes widened at the casual statement. Then, the kids, they were okay? And even the Adventure Guild elders? Oh, thank the Seven–
“And the Knights have peacefully surrendered to cooperate with Khareni’ah.” Her heart drops to her stomach. Did Jean realize the price she had to pay when those monsters stormed in? Or was her hand forced against her will?
“Peacefully, huh?” She envisions the beef she’s stabbing is Kaeya’s flesh; if only for a bitter, violent moment.
“Would you rather have them forced into submission?”
Her blood runs cold at the empty expression Kaeya’s face adorns. There’s a glint in his eyes that she’s never seen before, not even when she saw him facing enemies. Her eyes narrow into dagger points.
Is this his true face?
ii. “Now cut me loose: I’ll show you the meaning of sacrifice.”
Kaeya knew the consequences of taking Khaenri’ah's hand.
"This is your chance. You are our last hope."
He could’ve forgotten his father’s words when his hands clasped around his shoulders that fateful night. Turned over a new leaf when Crepus found him soaked to the bone near the vineyard, hurrying him inside before he could die of hypothermia. When Varka knighted him, he could’ve moved on from the past and broken free from his father’s heavy expectations upon him.
And yet, even after Crepus died, he could not stop but think about how even the mighty fell.
So he resolves turning his back on Diluc's betrayed face, not just once, but twice. He puts aside what Jean had taught him in protecting Mondstadt, if only to crush the guilt that came with facing her as she is surrounded by abyss heralds. He knows Lisa would’ve wiped him off the map if they tried to do anything to Jean. And Amber, the young clever outrider who has always pointed at him anytime something suspicious happened. Now, she will no longer be wrong.
But he could not turn back now.
Khaenri’ah was his home. They were humans, just like the other nations. Even if the Heavenly Principles gave judgment upon his country, they are, and still, people at their core. And when his countrymen fell, what did the other Archons do?
They turned away and closed their eyes.
Still, even if Briony had tried, he knew she could not do the same. Not when she was forced to face him and his eyes. That is the one thing he always found endearing about her. It was hard to find someone like her who is able to care, and so fiercely and genuinely at that. Even as rumors swirled around him, she still smiled and invited him in for tea on a sunny afternoon.
“The best outcome is Mondstadt being burned down?” She slams her hands on the table, standing up. “Innocent people have been assaulted, ‘all for the best outcome’? Are you hearing yourself right now?”
But if he had to be honest, maybe what he enjoyed most, is when she gets mad.
The fire in her eyes burns brighter than even Diluc’s flames that scorched his right eye that fateful rainy night. Like the explosive burn of Death After Noon, Briony’s sharp rebuttals leave no one standing. Her words are no longer shrouded and censored by an internal review, but instead carry the blunt force of the knowledge she carries. He’s beginning to realize he’s developed quite the titillating taste for the finer things in life.
He waits for her heavy breaths to slow and regulate.
“The townspeople have been mostly unharmed.” He watches as Briony perks up at his sentence. He knows that her pride won’t allow her to ask him directly about the people she cares about. “And the Knights have peacefully surrendered to cooperate with Khaenri’ah.”
A flurry of emotions flit by on her face. Relief for a couple moments, then worry, and finally, anger, once again.
“Peacefully, huh?” She scoffs as she forcefully spears a fork into a piece of beef.
“Would you rather have them forced into submission?”
“Don’t be morbid.”
“I’m just saying,” he hums, amused at her pointed glare, “it could’ve turned out a lot worse than what the current situation is.”
Her knife makes a ugly screech as she pointedly drags it across the ceramic while cutting into the beef. “And there are situations where it shouldn’t be happening at all.”
He twirls the knife in his hands as he meets her eyes. “Riddle me this, O’ leading expert on Khaenri’ah. What do you think these forces are hoping to achieve from all this?”
It’s clear that she’s taken aback at his sudden question. Her face flickers between confusion and distrust, unsure of his intentions behind the words. There’s something captivating in the way her dark eyebrows and viridian eyes scrunch in deep thought, clever mind already turning wheels upon his question.
“The forces have been ruthless, but if you are to be trusted on your word, and if the townspeople and the Knights have been spared…” Ah, there it is. That lovely expression of realization dawning upon her mien. “Don’t tell me…”
He smiles and leans forward in a conspiratory manner. “Khaenri’ah is a country for the people, by the people. My countrymen may resent the people who love the Seven, but we know better to misdirect our anger.”
She’s left frozen, staring down at her plate in muted horror.
“We’re only asking for the Archons to help clean up the mess that they stood by on the sidelines for.” He leans back and shrugs. “Again, I’m not asking for your forgiveness. But I don’t want you to get hurt trying to do something foolish out there.”
That seems to melt her frozen stature. “Do something foolish? Like trying to make sure no one gets hurt?”
“There have been no casualties, despite the mayhem that happened.” He stands, picking up his cleared plate. “That, I will not lie to you about.”
She’s silent as he also takes her plate. As he turns around to head to the kitchen sink, a broken sigh has him stopping in place.
“Was everything we went through a lie?” Briony hunches over with a wobbly whisper. “Was it amusing, leading me around like some kind of ignorant dog?”
Diluc said something similar that cold rainy night. Just like Briony had her trembling hands clasped together, his adopted brother had to take his claymore with both hands instead of his usual one hand technique, due to them shaking so much. With anger or sorrow, he doesn’t know.
He’s silent for a moment. It would be all too easy to lie and smile it off, but he knows that would silently close another door that could never be opened again. And he could not have her cut him off, not when he has fallen in love so deeply and ardently. He doesn’t want to be left alone on that cold, dirt road anymore.
“If I said yes, would that make you feel better?” He places the dishes into the sink, the hollow clinks filling the void.
He only gets silence in response, and when he looks over, he flinches. Briony’s tears flow down her cheeks and drip onto the pine wood table. He purses his lips in hesitation before he kneels down to eye level with her.
Lifting her head gently, he stares into her glistening eyes as he wipes away the tears oh so gently with his thumbs. Foreheads pressed together, they both stare into each other's eyes.
“I love you.” The bold declaration opens his heart for only a moment. Glacial ice thawing under her pleading gaze. “And nothing will change that, sweetheart.”
If he could drink up all the despair and sorrow reflecting in those deep forest hues, he would be a staggering drunk outside Cat’s Tail. Is it cruel of him to think that Briony looks her most beautiful now? Broken down and hanging off his every word, she looks like a painting; gleaming tears like shining pearls upon her tawny complexion, dark mossy hair like swirling tree branches framing her face, all for his viewing.
“But I don’t love you.” His heart freezes over at the genuine response.
He smirks.
“It’s a good thing, then, that you don’t have a choice in that matter.” His voice carries no hostility as he abruptly removes his hands from her face, causing her to almost fall forward into air.  She splutters as she looks up in dazed confusion.
“Prisoners of war don’t usually get to have a say in how their jail cell or warden is.” He cheekily adds, shrugging on his fur cloak. As he approaches the door, he takes a final look back at Briony sprawled haphazardly while gazing at him with an expression that he prays to be desperation. He closes his eyes and turns away. He’s losing his touch. Not many could get under his skin or the careful facade he wrapped around himself. And yet, she manages to do so without even batting an eye.
“And as your prison warden, you won’t be going anywhere.” He swings open the door with grim determination. Remember why you’re doing this. He had long steeled himself for this when he decided to knock upon Diluc’s door and confess his dark secrets of a mission that could not be heard by unknowing ears.
His Vision sends frigid air frothing around his shoulder and for a moment, he lets the cold envelope him once more.
The click of the door closing behind him syncs with the gongs of the bells in the Favonius Cathedral. How ironic, that the chimes that once brought hope into the hearts of others, Kaeya thinks, now strike fear of those in line for execution.

Darkiplier Headcanons --------------------------
Pretends that he doesn't care much about the other egos but oh boy do they
If anything bad happened to any of them
They would LOSE IT
Still hates Actor with a burning passion. If they're in the same room for too long in the manor it'll be a mess by the end of their inevitable fight
I know this is kind of a popular headcanon, but he and Wilford basically adopted Yan
Goes with he/they pronouns, although he says "I have much more important matters to deal with than to care about what pronouns you call me. I do not care."
So everyone resorted to he/they
He allows the egos of other creators to stay at their residence
Actually doesn't hate Anti as much as most think, although he doesn't particularly like him either (Dark mostly tolerates him)
One of the most powerful egos at the Ego Manor
He tries to reduce the ringing so it doesn't harm the others
Dark is actually a good singer
Probably got it from Mark (not Actor, like content creator Mark)
Also probably listens to Mother Mother (Body of Years or Hayloft are their favorites)
On rare occasions, you could probably hear him singing, but he prefers that nobody hears him
He has the DA's mirror in his office, and they talk to them through it frequently
He has nearly total control of the Void, a pocket dimension/realm which they gained access to after forming
Likes birds, their favorites are probably either ravens or black falcons

So like, everyone loves Nemo, but is their anyone he hates?
Asking the hard questions, I see. This is what my degree is for (it’s actually for media production and cinema and screen studies but-) I’ll answer based upon if he was with my builder, Scout.
Scout and Nemo are meant to be, your honor.
Yan. 100000%. He does not like him at all. He becomes subject to harsh pushing to the side when Nemo accidentally wanders into his path. He’s been pushed off the edge of the stairs to the commerce porch when he was sleeping. Yan wouldn’t let him into the building during a sandstorm when everyone thought someone else had taken him in. But he could bear it. It was fine.
Until Scout adopts him.
While she protects him and he realizes he’ll never know harm and neglect again- he’s been witness to times where Yan has caused her emotional stress. He senses the frustration and her hitting her breaking point despite keeping her features blank as best as she can. And Nemo hates it. He can’t fix it. And he knows that Yan is the cause.
He’ll hold it against him- associate that negativity his owner feels with all the things he knows make this man up. He hates him and begins to growl at him on sight when he’s in Scout’s hold and Yan begins to come closer to her space.
If Scout isn’t there? Nemo avoids him at all costs.
He has though chewed on his hat before and pissed in his shoes.
