I HAVE FIGURED OUT WHO CROWLEY USED TO BE
well so I have a half baked theory at least…
so you know the scene in the book and tv show where Aziraphell is like why J? In regards to Crowleys full name change of Anthony J Crowley and Crowley goes it’s just a J really
Well what if that’s bc he put his angelic name as his earth middle name and didn’t want to tell anyone ??
So doing some research I found these to be the candidates of J names
Tumblr media
Not a lot to go one especially since I was looking for some sort of creation tie in BUT you know what Crowley is associated with in the show ??????? FIRE from creating the stars, loosing his car due to fire and even saving Aziraphell from hell fire
this caught my eye because that aligns with Jehoel who is a seraphim class angel (higher than an arch angle as we got hints from s2 that Crowley has to be a thrown dominion or higher) and Jehoel is associated with fire
the original Hebrew has Jehoel as yahoel
Tumblr media
I looked at the wiki page for this angel and didn’t find much else but it’s interesting to note that
One he’s a seraphim
Two that Jehoel is the angel over fire
Three he is thought to be the chief angel of the seraphim
Four his name appears in the Apocalypse of Abraham, which is a pseudepigraphical work
Five that Jehoel is one of the 70 names of metatron
I was curious to see if there’s any other correlations that I could make between them
Tumblr media
For the most part it doesn’t look like there’s a ton of similarities HOWEVER
Jehoel introduces himself as a being possessed of the power of the Ineffable name
Who has control over “the threats and attacks of reptiles”
These two things stood out to me the most because ineffable is not a word that is just thrown around or common in religious texts unless it’s super important and in our show that word is tied to Crowley and Aziraphell
The snake thing is interesting to me because one of Crowleys forms is a serpent (which are reptiles) it would make sense that’s a form that he got when he fell if he had control over the attacks of reptiles
I want to draw your attention to this tho
Joheol’s face is depicted like chrysolite
Chrysolite can also be called Peridot
Guess what color THAT IS !!!
Tumblr media
If you said Crowleys eyes your correct !!!
Overall I was very surprised by how much of Joheol’s story/what I could find checked a lot of the boxes for a believable angel Crowley!
Anyways that’s all the theories I have right now !! I’d love to here your thoughts on this

Hi! I had a question about angelology after reading your lovely post, and I thought maybe you would have an answer (or at the very least opinions), but also no pressure to answer :)
I always thought Gabriel was the highest ranking angel as an archangel, but according to the actual ranking of angels, archangels are pretty far down on the list! Also, Aziraphale was guardian of the Eastern Gate, but I know he’s a principality and not a cherubim. And then there’s Muriel being a 37th rank angel (or something along those lines) which I feel like adds a whole other ranking system? I admittedly know almost nothing about angelology outside your post, so I guess my question was what are your thoughts on the ranks of the other angels in the show that (at least to my knowledge, but I could be totally misinterpreting things) are contradictory to the three ranks??
I mostly find it interesting that the show mentions thrones and dominions being the higher-up angels but then Gabriel being an archangel really threw me off. Anyway, thanks for the post!
Hi! Thank you for your question! Highly appreciated.
First of all, I would like to clarify that the angelology I study is Christian Catholic Angelology, so I'm sorry in advance if someone's confused.
Gabriel and his ranking
With arcangels we might get a little bit confusing, because we have the arcangels and The Archangels.
The last one are the Messengers of God, They're the ones who receive the most important messages from God that need to be delivered to humans.
Ex. The Archangel Gabriel is the one who told Mary she'll be giving birth to Jesus (in the flashback of Job in ep 2 this hasn't happened yet so that why he doesn't say anything about it)
Tumblr media
Catholic church recognizes 3 of the 7 Archangels: Gabriel, Michael and Raphael.
• Michael - Recognized by The Bible, the one who fought against Lucifer, chief of "The Army of Yahweh"
• Gabriel - The Celestial Messenger
• Raphael - Recognized by The Book of Tobit, The Healer of God
Another possible interpretation we have of The 7 Archangels is that these are the seven spirits of God who are before the throne described in the Book of Enoch and in the Book of Revelation (Rev 1:4, 3:1, 4:5, 5:6).
They are said to be the guardian angels of nations and countries, concerned with the issues and events surrounding them, including politics, military affairs, and commerce.
Ex. Archangel Michael is known for being the protector if Israel.
Tumblr media
Examples of archangels are
• Raziel
• Camel
• Zadkiel
• Yahoel
• Cassiel
Aziraphale and his ranking
Neil just confirmed Aziraphale was a Cherub at the Garden of Eden. We can confirm this by the proximity to God and "upstairs" in ep 1.
Tumblr media
"You know, the current word from upstairs is that we'll be shutting this all down again in about 6,000 years"
- Aziraphale (S2E1 03:05)
"Now that's [Earth] where people that we're currently designing are going to be. I've seen the plans".
- Aziraphale (S2E1 03:47)
Fun fact: Uriel (Fire of God) was the one with the flamming sword to avoid humans access to The Tree of Life (mention in The Book of Adam and Eve) and the one of warned Noah about the flood. I found very interesting that they chose Aziraphale in those parts.
Tumblr media
In my previous post about Angelology, we see the ranks, a Cherub being in the 2nd chorus of the 1st rank and a Principality being in the 1st chorus of the 3rd rank.
So, in Christian Catholic Angelology, he got a demotion.
Muriel and their ranking
In season 2 we know that Muriel is 37th order scrivener.
Tumblr media
Scriveners are actually in the bible, but they're not angels; basically, they copy manuscripts and other texts as well as secretarial and administrative duties, also they're the one whose occupation is to draw contracts or prepare writings, that's why we see Muriel doing the authenticity verification of the permit Crowley had in ep 2.
Tumblr media
Ranking of angels
We have different ranking of angels depending on the religion, because each one might have the same name of the chorus (rank) but in different hierarchy (and also another type of ranks), it could be pretty confusing at some point. I personally follow the Christian Catholic Angelology.
I adore how they include Crowley and Aziraphale in biblical events, because based of their personalities it totally fit, which I think is pretty amazing.
Tumblr media
I hope my answer helped!

Hello, my name is Poet and I write stories and draw the characters in them
Recently my friend and I started writing something together and I started adoring the characters a lot so I drew them and now my brain is rotting
The whole story has a big CW for religious themes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are Khadash and Cécile, currently acquainted, but destined (determined by us) to become starstruck lovers
Khadash is a Nephilim, born to a human mother and the Seraphim Yahoel, the Seraphim of fire. To quote heaven, he is the praised one among men. Still, as a Nephilim he finds himself disliked by heaven and hell alike, only humankind loves him, perchance to the fact that they don’t know of his unfortunate heritage. He works hard to help people and make earth as full of support and love as he can, but at the end of the day, he too is only a person, weakened by the human blood and soul within him. One day, he hopes, they’ll accept him into heaven, but will that ever happen?
Cécile on the other hand has rather different circumstances. Born in the old times, he was a weak boy with a chronic illness none can remember nowadays. His desperation to stay alive, to live at all, attracted a foe much greater than he could expect. A demon lord found him, offering him a healed body, a better future, if only he did something for him. And that he did. The slashed off head of a Seraphim rolled past his feet, a beheaded body hitting the floor before him. “Drink it” the demon whispered in his ear. And so he did. Pain so bad he wished to die ran through his veins as the colour of his blood changed and wings sprouted from his back. No memories of his life remained. From now on he was Cécile, determined by the only ones that would take him in. Lords of hell, the fallen angels, looked upon him with both disgust and pity, the false Seraphim only a creature to them. Now he’d lived with humans for many many centuries, unsatisfied and bitter, until he crossed paths with someone that managed to warm his undying body.

Metatron angel
The discussion in the previous sections has made clear that the traditions about Metatron offer a plethora of titles for this exalted angel. The titles seem to derive from many sources: the early legends about Adam, Enoch, Yahoel, Michael, and Melchisedek, as well as the later rabbinic and Hekhalot angelic lore. In respect to these conceptual developments, Sefer Hekhalot can be seen as a compendium or an encyclopedia of Metatron’s titles; as such it offers a great variety of early and late designations, including such well-known titles as the Prince of the World, the Youth, and the lesser YHWH. Yet, if attention is drawn to the frequency of the occurrence of these titles in 3 Enoch, one of them stands out through repeated use in the text. This title is connected with the unique place that Metatron occupies in relation to the divine Face; he is considered a special servant of the divine Presence,. Scholars have previously observed that in 3 Enoch, Metatron becomes “the angel who has access to the divine Presence, the ‘Face’ of the Godhead….”Synopse §11 stresses that Metatron’s duties in this office include the service connected with the Throne of Glory.
It is noteworthy that the appellation “Prince of the Divine Presence” repeatedly follows the name Metatron in 3 Enoch. For example, with this title he is introduced in chapter one of Sefer Hekhalot; in this chapter his duty is to invite the visionary, Rabbi Ishmael, into the divine Presence and to protect him against the hostility of the angels:
At once the Holy One, blessed be he, summoned to my aid his servant, the angel Metatron, Prince of the Divine Presence. He flew out to meet me with great alacrity, to save me from their power. He grasped me with his hand before their eyes and said to me, “Come in peace into the presence of the high and exalted King to behold the likeness of the chariot.”[5]
A few verses later, in 3 Enoch 1:9 (Synopse §2), Metatron is mentioned as the one giving R. Ishmael the strength to sing a song of praise to God. Here again the angel is introduced as the Prince of the Divine Presence. The recurring designations of Metatron as the Prince of the Divine Presence are puzzling since this title does not belong exclusively to this angel. The Merkabah tradition follows here the pseudepigrapha which attest to a whole class of the highest angels/princes (Mynph yr#) allowed to see the divine Face.[6]
It is significant that, although the designation is not restricted to Metatron, in 3 Enoch it becomes an essential part of the common introductory formula, “The angel Metatron, Prince of the Divine Presence,” through which R. Ishmael relates the various revelations received from his exalted angelus interpres. It also becomes a dividing grid of the microforms that partitions the narrative of Sefer Hekhalot. Sometimes this text seeks to enhance the repetitive formula by adding to it the additional definition, “the glory of the highest heaven.” The combination of the expressions, the “Prince of the Divine Presence” and “the glory of the heaven,” does not appear to be coincidental since the divine Presence/Face is the divine Glory which leads to the transformation of any servant of the Face into a glorious angelic being resembling the luminosity of the divine Face. This paradoxical transformation is described in detail in Synopse §19, where Metatron conveys to R. Ishmael his dramatic transition to the role of the servant of the divine Face:
R. Ishmael said: The angel Metatron, Prince of the Divine Presence, the glory of highest heaven, said to me: When the Holy One, blessed be he, took me to serve the throne of glory, the wheels of the chariot and all the needs of the Shekinah, at once my flesh turned to flame, my sinews to blazing fire, my bones to juniper coals, my eyelashes to lightning flashes, my eyeballs to fiery torches, the hairs of my head to hot flames, all my limbs to wings of burning fire, and the substance of my body (ytmwq Pwgw) to blazing fire.[7]
It was already observed that the idea of the Prince of the Presence is both mediatorial and liturgical, and therefore is closely linked with the motif of the celestial curtain, Pargod (dwgrp),[8]the entity which separates the divine Presence from the rest of the heavenly world.[9] The function of this Curtain which can be viewed as a celestial counterpart of the veil found in the earthly sanctuary is twofold. First, it protects the angelic hosts from the harmful luminosity of the divine Face. At the same time it shields the Deity by concealing the ultimate mysteries of the Godhead now accessible solely to the prince(s) of the divine Presence whose duty is to serve the Deity behind[10] the Curtain.[11] Several passages found in the Hekhalot literature depict Metatron and other princes of the Face as attendants who serve the divine Presence in the closest proximity to the Throne, and have the right to enter the immediate presence of the Lord.
The passage found in Hekhalot Zutarti says that “when the youth enters below the throne of glory, God embraces him with a shining face….” This description conveys the fact that the deadly effect of the vision of the luminous Face, which terrifies the angelic hosts, cannot harm the Youth who executes here the office of the sar happanim. This tradition stresses the difference between the princes of the divine Presence and the rest of the angels, who must shield their own faces because they cannot endure the direct sight of the Deity. Another significant feature of the passage from Hekhalot Zutarti is that the Youth’s entrance into God’s presence is understood here liturgically, i.e., as the entrance into the heavenly tabernacle which, according to other traditions, is located beneath the Throne of Glory.
Another text preserved in the Cairo Genizah also depicts the Youth as emerging from his sacerdotal place in the immediate Presence of the Deity:

The Sarim
@aprincess-and-herknight
@waywardlightbearer
@nptperfect-indadseyes
@sam-winchester-hunting-log
@angelic-rebels
@hellsmother
@respect-the-king
@wcrthlxss
I have decided to use this name, the other Sarim (the first angels born) will change. They will be called the Seraphim, the council named after them.
Also Zagzagel wasn't being used much before so I decided to repurpose him.
The Sarim were His latest project, He had been sketching designs for them since He left Heaven so long ago. He wanted them to be different, still beautiful but different.
Their wings have no uniform color, different colors to reflect the different factions that have sprung from Heaven - yes, even the Aoi Si (He allowed that one to happen, Danu was harmless and they were safer far away from Heaven).
He wishes them to be champions of the voiceless, free the iele, make peace with the demons and other supernatural races that exist.
He wants them to better than all his other angels. He hopes he did a good job.
They are strong, like any typical archangel, however this time they can talk to him. He thinks at least, the best he can do if he wants things to change is to get involved.
So yes, Grace will raise them, show them the beauty and resilience of Earth and its Humans, but he will help. He will take an active role this time no matter how much his siblings don't believe him.
He cannot allow His story to continue to derail. He will not allow it to happen again.
Akathriel Yah Yehod Sebaoth (Achtariel, Aktriel, Ketheriel, Yehadriel) - a supreme Prince Regent of the Seventh Heaven, superior to the other angels, and often paired with the Angel of the Lord and God himself. Elisha ben Abuya, one of four sages who visited Heaven while still alive, said: "When I ascended into Paradise, I beheld Akatriel YHVH, Lord of Hosts, at the entrance, and 120 myriads of ministering angels surrounded him." In the Cabala he is the name of the godhead that appears on the God's Throne of Glory. Occasionally. according to an eighth century apocalyptic text, Metatron appears in Akatriel's place.
Galgaliel a.k.a. Galgliel - a regent of the sunshine, along with Raphael. As one of the chief angels of the sun, he also rules the sun's wheel. He is also said to be chief of the order of galgallim
Jehoel (a.k.a. Jehuel, Jaoel, Yahoel, Shemuel, Metatron and Kemuel) - a regent of elemental Fire and, along with Seraphiel, a chief angel of the Seraphim who, according to the Gnostics, reigns over seven angels. He is also said to be the keeper of the unspeakable name of god and a price of the divine presence. According to Jewish legend he is the angel who has control over the demon Leviathan. In The Apocalypse of Abraham he is said to be the heavenly choirmaster who is the "singer of the eternal" and "heavenly son of man" who went along with Abraham on his visit to Paradise and, once there, showed him the path of human history.
Rikbiel YHVH - a great angel and protector of the Merkabah. A prince of the Divine Council who has more power than Metatron. He is also one of the seven chiefs of the galgallim.
Shemael a.k.a. Kemuel, Camael and Shemuiel ("name of God") - this angel inspires feelings of gratitude and thankfulness in the human heart and, in doing so, helps us grow closer to all angels, to the Creator and to our highest Self. His duty is to stand at the windows of Heaven and listen for the Jewish songs of praise to ascend from their synagogues and houses of study (his name comes from the first word of the Hebrew song of praise). According to Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism, he is the archon of Sholem.
Tsadkiel a.k.a. Tzadkiel, Kaddisha ("the holy one") and Azza - an angel of justice who ranks fourth among the ten Archangels of the Briatic world. The Ozar Midrahim II he is called Tzadkiel, or Kaddisha and lists him among the many angels who guard the gates of the East Wind. Cabalistically he is the intelligence of the Jupiter and Joseph's guardian angel.
Zagzagel, Zagzagael, Zagnzagiel and Zamzagiel ("God's righteousness" and "divine splendor") - an angel of wisdom and instructor of young angels who speaks seventy languages. He is also a prince of the Divine Presence, of the Torah, and a prince regent of the Fourth Heaven who resides in the Seventh Heaven. He is credited with having taught Moses the Ineffable Name and, according toThe Legends of the Jews he is the "angel with the horns of glory."

Everything I’ve got so far about the Heavenly Host
Same ‘verse as all my other angel stuff.  Cut to spare your dashes because it’s 3 pages on google docs.
Angels of the Presence: Powerful and inscrutable beings with responsibilities of cosmic scope, who take orders directly from God.  They can, theoretically, take any shapes they choose, but usually favor their default “eldritch light elemental” forms, although the more considerate ones tone down the glare a bit around mortals and lesser angels.  Fun fact: Seraphim and Ophanim in their true forms are mildly radioactive!
Seraphim: Look like miniature suns (with or without wings and faces), or phoenixes made of solar plasma.  They look after stars, the cycle of souls, and the energy balance of Creation.
Kerubim: always resemble hybrid beings of various sorts, involving a mix of terrestrial, flying, and astronomical/celestial elements.  Guardians of interdimensional gates and other borders of metaphysical significance.  Look after time, space, and the superstructure of the multiverse.
Ophanim: Look like miniature spiral galaxies (for a value of “miniature” that ranges from the size of a small bungalow to the size of a small moon, depending on how much they “scrunch up”) with too damn many eyes.  When they manifest on Earth (which is very rare), take the form of vehicles rather than birds or people.  Look after the laws of motion and gravity and the larger physical structure of the universe.
The Archangels: A job, not a choir.  The Council of Angels that run things in Heaven when God does not feel the need to intervene directly, and the bosses of most of the non-Presence Heavenly Host.  (Angels of the Presence generally follow the Archangels’ directions unless they have a very good reason not to, as a gesture of respect, but they report to God directly and the Council has no actual authority over them.)  Archangels can come from any choir, but upon ascension often adopt a customized physical form that reflects their themes and specific area of authority.  They can take any shape they choose, but generally, unless they’re in disguise, follow the lesser angels’ pattern of the five usual angelic manifestations.  Most pick their winged-humanoid form or their Fear Not form as their default, but there are exceptions.  Melek Taus and Sophia prefer their bird forms, Metatron and Sandalphon prefer to look like the humans they once were, and Yaldabaoth looks kind of like a Chinese dragon.
The Archangels include:
Michael, Heaven’s General (secretarybird)
Gabriel, the Angel of Revelation (trumpeter swan)
Raphael, Angel of Healing (lark)
Uriel, Angel of the Sun (western tanager)
Haniel, the Angel of Joy (chickadee)
Melek Taus, the Peacock Angel (peacock)
Raziel, Angel of Secrets (Eurasian eagle-owl)
Sealtiel, Angel of Prayer (messenger pigeon)
Azrael, the Angel of Death (monk vulture)
Israfil, the Angel of Music (lyrebird)
Iophiel, Angel of Art and Beauty (bowerbird)
Sahaquiel, the Angel of the Sky (swift)
Anahita, the Angel of the Waters (loon)
Yahoel, the Angel of Fire (cardinal)
Armaiti, the Angel of the Earth (lovebird)
Metatron, Heaven’s Scribe (sacred ibis)
Sandalphon, The Angel Formerly Known As The Prophet Elijah (raven)
Jegudiel, Angel of Rulership (gyrfalcon)
Barachiel, Angel of Blessings (bluebird)
Sophia, Angel of Wisdom (dove)
Zadkiel, Angel of Freedom and Mercy (resplendent quetzal)
Samael, Angel of Divine Wrath (shrike)
Yaldabaoth, Angel of Material Creation (n/a - Yaldabaoth’s default form is a feathered giant snake with a face like a Chinese guardian lion, and when he does take other forms, they’re serpentine, not avian.  This is because he was originally a Celestial Dragon.)
Mithra, Angel of Light, Truth, and Covenant (golden eagle)
Raguel, Angel of Justice (peregrine falcon)
Camael, Angel of Courage (hummingbird)
Elohim: Abstract Angels.  While they can be roughly divided into “choirs,” and they don’t have the power or authority of archangels, individual Elohim are metaphysically significant beings in their own right, somewhere between tutelary deities and anthropomorphic personifications.  No two Elohim have exactly the same responsibilities, even if sometimes the distinctions of their duties can seem unnecessarily punctilious to mortals.
Angels of Logos: Personifications and guardians of ideas and non-material phenomena (moral, spiritual, social, philosophical, etc.).  Manifest as balls of light surrounded by floating scrolls, or humanoids with parchment wings.
Aeons: Angels of spiritual principles
Virtues: Angels of moral and ethical principles
Principalities: Angels of ideas, nations, and organizations.  (Some of these get pretty obscure.)
Angels of Nature: Guardians of living creatures, natural phenomena, and physical features of the material world.  Report to Yaldabaoth, the Archangel of Material Creation.  May cooperate with demigod nature spirits on issues of mutual interest, but very seldom deal directly with humanity.
Hashmallim: Angels of energy.  Manifest as bird-shaped beings made of fire, lightning, solar plasma, etc., or humanoids with glowing wings apparently made of the same substance.
Chayot: Angels of living creatures.  Manifest as thematically appropriate animals, plant people akin to Pathfinder-style leshys (for plant and fungus chayot), or humanoids with thematically appropriate wings (bee wings for the angel of bees, wings made of kelp fronds for the angel of seaweed, etc.)
Archons: Angels of the planets.  Manifest as tiny floating replicas of their world, bird-shaped beings whose color and pattern resemble their world seen from space, or humanoids with wings of the same design.
Devas: Angels of natural processes.  Manifest as bird-shaped beings made of an appropriate natural material or humanoids with wings of same.
Bene Elohim: Regular working stiff angels.  Your more “relatable” angels, although most of them are still not very human, and the only angels mortals who aren’t major prophets are likely to encounter.  (The Malakhim, Iyrin, and Hafatha are considered the closest to humanity.)  Their powers, talents, and some aspects of their personalities are still closely tied up with their duties, although not to the extent of being personifications of their jobs like some Elohim.  They also tend to acquire some of the quirks of their bird aspects.  All of the Bene Elohim choirs can choose to manifest in any of five forms: a ball of light, a specific bird (for instance, the Watcher Gadreel’s bird form is always a male green jay), a specific human form (they have some control over physical details, but it’s always a variation on the same person), the classic “shiny humanoid with wings and a halo” angel form, and their “Fear Not” form, a sort of luminous/avian/humanoid/eldritch Hard Light being.
Malakhim: Messengers.  Bird form: Columbids
Iyrin: Watchers.  Bird form: Corvids
Hafatha: Guardians.  Bird form: Geese
Erelim: Warriors (more defensive).  Bird form: Swans
Chayalim: Warriors (more offensive).  Bird form: Raptors
Hazzanim: Choristers.  Bird form: Songbirds
Soferim: Recording Angels.  Bird form: Ibises and owls
Nashitat: Angels of Death.  Bird form: Vultures and other carrion birds
Darda’il: Journeyers.  Bird form: Albatrosses and petrels
Other blesséd spirits:
The Celestial Dragons: Agents of Heaven, but not part of the angelic hierarchy (except for Yaldabaoth), and their metaphysical biology is closer to the eastern dragons of the material plane than it is to that of angels.
Muses and Gandharvas: Heavenly performers (who make music for the sheer joy of it, unlike Chorister angels whose Celestial Harmonies have specific metaphysical functions) and spirits of artistic inspiration.
Dakinis:  “Spiritual Muses,” inspirational spirits of enlightenment and esoteric wisdom
Heavenly Guardian Beasts: Benevolent zoomorphic spirit-creatures of various sorts - lamassus, buraqs, foo lions, simurghs, etc.  Can be considered the good counterparts to Hellhounds, although more intelligent.
Motes: Similar to lantern archons.  “Unassigned” proto-souls manifesting as sapient balls of light.
