Today, Romano found some of his clothing from the risorgimento era, also known as the Unification of Italy. It's been long enough that there's no bad blood, right?

Fucking cruella. You're going to cite fucking Cruella as an example of bad costuming?!? Because why? it's not sparkly enough for you????
You're out here saying Jenny Beavan, three time oscar winner 10 times oscar nominee (one of those wins was for cruela and it was fucking deserved) is bad at her job now?!
Not only is the specific dress you cite from Cruella far more structurally complex than the 2000 one, it's also specifically a dress intended to look like it was made quickly from scrap fabric for plot reasons, and it's on screen for all of 5 minutes because it's one of 54 individual costumes just for that one character. That doesn't include any of the villains costumes, any side characters, or any of the costumes which only appear on mannequins because this is a film about the fashion industry and almost every shot is filled with incredible clothing including as part of the set dressing. Most of which, including that dress you're shitting on, are handmade from scratch.
you are seriously trying to claim THIS

(every single aspect of this costume is handmade including the leather jacket because jenny beavan couldn't find one the exact perfect shape for her vision. the petals on the skirt are hand sewn. there are more than 5,000 of them. the epaulettes alone are minature works of art. it's on screen for a couple of minutes as part of a montage that just consists of cruella showing off amazing outfits she's designed and every one of them is a work of art)
is an example of bad lazy costuming?
the costumes on display at the national costume institute?
the other examples in the post are also bad (ever after and cinderella are not in any way comparable, that's like saying pride and prejudice has more historically accurate costumes than bridget jones, just because they have the same vague source material does not mean the settings aesthetic or style are even vaguely connected. the costumes in cinderella aren't amazing, but they're not bad because they don't look like what people wore in 14th century florence!) (and even a TV show with the budget of rings of power is never going to have anything close to the time and budget of a major studio blockbuster, it's simply not a fair comparison. also there has literally never been a film like the LOTR trillogy and there probably never will be again, it's not an example of how hollywood used to be it's an example of how one time, by some miracle, every single aspect of production came together perfectly for that one shoot).
also maybe you did mean the single scene in avengers endgame, but I keep seeing people claiming black panther II shouldn't even have been nominated for best costumes, let alone won (a win Ruth Carter fully deserved) because 'all of marvel's costumes are cgi', so this is the obligatory reminder that no, they're not, they were cg for one scene of one movie, and it was really stupid, but it is not a recurring aspect of hollywood or the mcu, it was the result of the specifically rushed filming timeline of that one movie.
lack of pre-production is a problem across the industry, especially in major hollywood studios, and costume design is one of the parts getting hit by that. lack of unions are a feature but not in the way op is insinuating or the way most people reblogging this probably think.
None of these costumes are the result of costume design being outsourced to the lowest bidder, or replaced with cgi, or any of that nonsense.
It's a result of shortening filming schedules meaning the preproduction time used for stuff like costume manufacture and sourcing is getting reduced and reduced. While a design union might help because they could try and push for mandatory minimum prep time, this crunch is affecting every part of film making, including a bunch of jobs which are unionised, so it definitely wouldn't be the magic pill y'all seem to think.
and, and i cannot stress this enough, cruella is literally one of the best costumed movies of all time.
the decrease in costuming quality over the last 20 years has been soooo precipitous & nauseating. i’m not even talking abt marvel’s cg supersuits or anything this time, look at the fabric quality, structure, layering, character, and craftsmanship of older costumes in 102 dalmations (2000) vs cruella (2021)

ever after (1998) vs cinderella (2021)

lord of the rings (2001-2003) vs the rings of power (2022)

this trend should upset you not just because it looks cheap, but because it suggests a strong anti-art and anti-labor movement in film and tv making. don’t forget costumers are unionized
#cruella#hollywood#tumblr doesn't have the worst film 'criticism' on the internet#but only because twitter exists#anyway if this sounds salty#it's because the first time this post went around online i restrained myself from responding#because i hoped it would quietly die#finding out it's still being shared over a year later just activated a primal rage#the last decade has seen some of the greatest costuming in film history#emma#mad max#black panther#and obviously cruella#there's huge problems in hollywood#and a few of them are even new problems#(although way less than the internet would like you to think)#but none of them are that costume designers are worse at their jobs
