--------------------------------------------------
“Tell me honestly, Draco. Is there someone else in here?”
All of them collectively held their breathes, barely making any sort of movement. They began exchanging nervous glances as they waited to hear what would happen next.
“Of course not,” Draco scoffed. Harry marveled at the fact that he still managed to sound so haughty despite the fact that he knew he was also nervous.
“Is that so?” Lucius drawled, doubt clear in his voice. “Because Mifty said that she saw someone in the drawing room just a few hours ago.”
There was a brief pause, and the tension in the air only thickened.
“Perhaps she was referring to when I called Blaise through the Floo,” Draco said eventually, somehow keeping his voice even. “She must have meant that she heard him through there.”
“Yes, except I actually clarified whether or not someone was physically here.” Harry supposed he should have been thankful that Lucius might not have thought to ask how many people Mifty saw, but he didn’t want to jinx himself.
“He came through for just a moment to return my notes to me.” Draco was starting to sound more and more confident with his story by the second, and Harry only felt his dread increase.
“What if he sweeps the area?” Harry panicked, dropping his head in his hands. “If he sounds too confident, then Lucius might actually check around and find us.”
“Stop overthinking,” Blaise sighed. “He’d probably be too lazy to check for himself.”
“Now, I know he said he had an unreasonably large bedroom, but it won’t actually take that long to find us if he tried,” Harry reasoned, his leg starting to bounce anxiously. “What if-“
“Shh!”
“Then you won’t mind if I have a look around, then?”
“This is it, we’re going to die,” Harry mumbled.
“Okay, I might actually agree with you on that,” Pansy sighed. “I can’t wait for mother to kill me.”
“Maybe it won’t be so bad if we manage to think of some kind of story?” Hermione offered. “C’mon, help me think of something to say for when he comes in.”
“We were planning on having an orgy,” Blaise said sarcastically, dropping his head back on the bathroom wall. “Face it, we’re doomed no matter what we say. If it’s not death by Lucius, imagine what our parents would say.”
“Fuck off,” Ron scoffed, wrinkling his nose. “I would rather he hex us than give that excuse.”
“What do you propose we say then, oh wise one?” Pansy said, raising an eyebrow at the redhead.
“I dunno,” he shrugged in response. “We have a major project over the Hols and since Draco couldn’t leave without contacting them, we decided it would be better to come here?”
There was a brief moment of silence, each of them trading glances before Hermione spoke.
“Actually, that just might work,” she commented, nodding her head.
“It might not stop him from killing us, but it might soften the blow,” Blaise agreed.
“That doesn’t change the fact that they’re going to hate us!” Harry wailed, restraining himself so that his voice doesn’t get too loud since the two Malfoys were still discussing outside.
“Okay, everyone excluding Potter will give this excuse then,” Pansy said, narrowing her eyes before pointing to Harry. “You, on the other hand, can tell them that you just arrived to sweep him off his feet and take him on a date.”
“What!” Harry yelped, very much alarmed. “No way! Why would I say that?”
“Because you know you want too,” Blaise said with a singsong voice. “C’mon, Potter, you can’t seriously think that you’re that subtle.”
He was just about to protest before Hermione cut him off. “They’re right, Harry,” she said while looking at him with a reluctant smile. “It’s not that hard to spot.”
“Oh my god,” Harry whined, dropping his head back in his hands so that it was out of sight for the rest of his friends. “Does that mean Draco noticed too?”
“Probably not,” Pansy snorted. “You may not be subtle, but Draco can be pretty dense when it comes to these things.”
Harry was just about to speak up and defend that in Draco’s defense, he was actually pretty smart so there was still a chance that he’d have noticed Harry’s feelings for him when they heard a door open.
“See, there’s nobody here,” Draco said nonchalantly. It was at that moment when Harry realized they had entered the bedroom and it wasn’t the bathroom door that they heard.
Everyone immediately stopped talking, and the tension in the air from earlier had returned. Somehow, it felt much more oppressive this time.
“Very well, then,” Lucius said. They only let go of their breaths once they heard two pairs of feet retreating towards the room exit. “Your mother wants you down for dinner in a few minutes.”
“Yes, father,” Draco responded dutifully before they finally heard Lucius leave the room.
“You better praise whatever gods are up there that are looking out for your sorry arses,” Draco ranted, barging into his bathroom and finding them just a few seconds later. He threw the shower door open and gestured for them to get up.
“I’m just surprised he didn’t bother checking the bathroom,” Blaise said, stepping out of the bathroom before flopping himself down on the bed.
“We need to find a way for all of you to get out now,” Draco said, any sense of calmness he portrayed for his father just moments ago disappearing. “Because they’re going to get suspicious if I don’t come down for dinner, and one of the elves might spot you in here when I do.”
“If they’re going to be in the dinning room, won’t it be safe for us to leave through the front?” Pansy asked. Harry didn’t really remember the interiors of the house when they came in, but he supposed it made sense since they were best friends.
“Yes, except to get to the main door, you have to pass by the dining room entrance,” Draco said, a pointed eyebrow raised.
“Okay, I know you said a disillusion charm wouldn’t work, but I think it just might in this situation,” Hermione offered, making everyone in the room turn to face her.
“How so?” Draco asked.
“Well, if they’re both in the dining room, they’d hardly notice if a few vague figures passed by the door. Especially if we lay low and do it quickly.”
“Hmm, that just might work, actually,” Draco said, perking up almost instantly. “You just have to be very quiet in that area, but I think I can distract them long enough for you to walk past the door.”
They began casting the disillusionment spells on each other – or rather, Hermione and Draco were since they did them best – and in a few minutes, they were ready to make their escape.
“Wait for me to go in and greet them before you begin walking past,” Draco reminded for what was probably the 6th time in the past 3 minutes. “I’ll keep talking to distract them so you have to-“
“Yes, we know,” Ron sighed, interrupting him. “Leave quickly in the short window that you’re distracting them.”
“Good,” Draco nodded before taking a deep breath. “Okay, let’s go.”
Quietly, the 6 of them began making their way through the complicated hallways of the Manor, trailing a few meters behind Draco as they did so. It was only when he held his hand up did they stop, just before the final turn they would need to take before reaching the main entrance.
“Father,” Draco greeted, Harry felt a small shove on his back and glared blindly at the vague silhouettes of his friends, unsure of who actually pushed him.
“Fuck you,” he hissed softly, not even sure of who he was addressing at that point.
“Move!” one of them whispered. Sighing to himself, he began making his way towards the exit, following what he was pretty sure was Ron’s figure in front of him.
“Draco, you came down earlier than we were expecting,” Lucius commented. Their voices gradually got louder as they neared the dining room entrance. “Your mother is still settling some of her things down.”
“…Oh?” The brief pause was enough to make Harry break out in cold sweat. In a few steps, he was standing just outside of the room entrance with enough space to peek his head through.
He saw Draco make his way over to one of the seats, pulling out his chair before settling down. Lucius was seated at the head of the table, and the final seat that had been set up remained empty.
“Yes, but she should be joining us in a few minutes,” Harry heard Lucius respond. Harry found himself staring through the door, even as he was walking by. “She just-“
It was at that moment when Harry bumped into something that he finally refocused his attention to where he was walking, belatedly realizing that the thing he had bumped into was actually the Malfoy matriarch.
“Now who might this be?” Narcissa asked, looking in the general area of Harry’s eyes. She immediately pulled out her wand, making Harry flinch for a second, before realizing that she was simply cancelling the disillusionment charm.
“Mr. Potter?” If she was surprised, her tone didn’t give anything away.
“Mrs. Malfoy,” Harry forced a smile, unsure of what else to say in that very moment. He heard the conversation that was happening in the dining room suddenly die down before they were joined by both Lucius and Draco.
“Mr. Potter,” Lucius said evenly.
When Harry made eye contact with Draco, he silently hoped that he would have a solution to get them out of that mess.
“Harry,” Draco said, his tone giving away that there was nothing else that could be done in that situation. He watched as Narcissa glanced from him to Draco, before looking back at him. When she opened her mouth, he was half expecting her to scold them.
“Mr. Potter,” she repeated. “Would you care to join us?”-————————————————-
