The city of love! How am I not supposed to kiss my best friend while our boyfriends are out?"

I just got super excited at the prospect of seeing an episode of The Young and the Restless from 1985 for Christmas.

All shows should preempt their holiday shows with a throwback.

I think growing up on soap operas inoculated me from dumb discourse about liking "immoral" characters and ships. Because like I have been watching soaps with my mom since I was 10 and the storylines would make the Steven Universe discourse site's brain explode.

Literally every main character in a soap that you're meant to like has committed a felony. Every ship is toxic. The Young and the Restless' fluffy lesbian wives? Yeah before they got married one of them scammed the other's family like 5 times and plagiarized her journal for song lyrics, while the other was introduced onto the show 15ish years ago gaslighting a woman by pretending to be the ghost of her dead daughter. The show's supercouple that's broken up and gotten back together 10 times? The guy once kept his ex's new bf in a basement for weeks. The fan favorite playful hacker character? Kidnapper. The age gaps between couples? Dear fucking God.

Every episode is cheating, felonies, cute antics between that storyline's token cute couple, and terrible people yelling at each other. I am dead serious I think watching soaps has made me immune to caring what fictional characters people like. I like Victor Newman, so I can't judge anyone.

I'm glad Tessa and Mariah came back but also I kind of don't mind them not being on the show. I miss them, I miss their storyline but the writers obviously don't care about them.

They've been together seven years. I know they've technically broken up twice but they were back together by the end of the next episode, they don't count. I lost count of how many marriages and divorces have happened since they got together. Kyle's on the brink of his third divorce.

If them never being on screen means they inadvertently become one of the longest running steady relationships in soap opera history, I'm taking it.
