What is one major difference between them?

First impressions:

Eli: that Gemma looked like she needed a friend. She was the type to sit alone at lunch and when he started school there, he went out of his way to approach her.

Gemma ( @bihanspookies ): that Eli looked like he had a lot of hurt in him, and that she wanted to make it go away.

What are their impressions now?

Eli: that Gemma is his best friend, and although he thinks she's a little too soft sometimes, he'd make anyone who bullies her eat their teeth. He thinks of her as a safe place and he knows that he can always stay with her if he needs to.

Gemma: that Eli is her platonic soulmate. Although he sometimes shows a nefarious streak and a certain disdain for humans, she knows she can be like a grounding wire, keeping him from giving in.

How do they communicate?

I would best describe their communication as open and honest. Eli relies on gentle, lighthearted bullying while Gemma wears her heart on her sleeve. They can often finish each other's sentences, and they have references only they get.

What is one major difference between the two of them?

Gemma is the type to forgive, probably to a fault. Eli holds a grudge and believes in an eye for an eye.

Their hands touched and it was like lighting. Cracking between them as their skin touched Peter felt it pulled from him exploding into her.

The force of it threw them both backward laying in the grassy lawn just blinking at each other.

“What just happened?” Gemma asked her eyes sparking with the energy that flicked around her before slowly dying like sapphire embers.

Peter shrugged getting up feeling his body quickly regenerating itself, “what can I say? I have an explosive personality” Gemma struggled trying to get up, her mind racing hands still warm from the surge of energy. In the blink of an eye Peter was in front of her holding out his hand “let’s try this again?”

She looked up before gently, very gently, taking it. “You’re a mutant like me.”

9 Under The Tuscan Sun (2003): 6.8

Written and directed by the late Audrey Wells, Under the Tuscan Sun is a delightfully uplifting rom-com about Frances (Diane Lane), a writer who ups and leaves her life in San Francisco to live in Tuscany after discovering her husband’s infidelity. Oh plays Patti, Frances’ best friend who encourages her to travel to Italy.

8 Double Happiness (1994): 7.0

The intensely personal semiautobiographical drama shows how divided Jade is between her traditional Chinese upbringing and her modern Canadian lifestyle.

7 Rabbit Hole (2010): 7.0

John Cameron Mitchell’s Rabbit Hole is a bruising account of a family dealing with the death of a young child at the hands of a teenage driver. Nicole Kidman gives a memorable and towering performance as Becca, a mournful mother who begins to find solace by interacting with Jason (Miles Teller), the driver who accidentally took her son’s life.

6 Meditation Park (2017): 7.1

Twenty-three years after working with Mina Shum for the first time, Oh reunited with the filmmaker for the sweet-natured drama Meditation Park in 2017. The story concerns Maria Wang (Pei-Pei Cheng), an aging woman in the throes of an existential crisis upon suspecting her husband’s infidelity. Oh plays Maria’s daughter Ava, a mother of two who encourages Maria to reconcile with her estranged brother ahead of his wedding and break free from her husband’s hold.

5 Hard Candy (2005): 7.1

David Slade’s Hard Candy is a deeply unnerving glimpse at a predatory pedophile (Patrick Wilson) getting his just deserts when a teenager (Elliot Page) tricks, traps, and tortures him in his apartment. Oh plays the man’s neighbor, Judy Tokuda, admitting she only took the role due to her working relationship with Page, a fellow Canadian she worked with on Wilby Wonderful the year prior.

With most of the action set inside the inescapable apartment, the visceral terror of the violence that Hayley (Page) exacts on Jeff (Wilson) is met by the suffocating sense of claustrophobia, making for a really upsetting experience. However, the hugely satisfying conclusion helps atone for the squeamish and uncomfortable moments of carnage.

4 Last Night (1998): 7.2

The most unheralded of Oh’s top films happens to be Last Night, a mordant pitch-black comedy about the impending apocalypse and the rag-tag band of Canadians with differing views on how to react. With the end of the world set to strike at midnight, Sandra (Oh) tries to make it out of her stranded position in Toronto and reunite with her husband, Duncan (David Cronenberg). One bad thing after another ensues.

Weird, wild, and ultimately winning, Last Night boasts writer/director Don McKellar’s signature brand of dark humor and anarchic energy. As such, the film has become an unforgettable cult classic among those who’ve seen it.

Makeup: eyeliner (likes to do fun colors such as blue, green, yellow), lipgloss, mascara.

Languages: English, Spanish and some French.

Personality: Artsy kid, reserved, keeps to herself, quiet. Feels most comfortable when doing art, with other art kids or with Eli (@chadillacboseman).

History: Born as a premature twin to Adam (a human) and Jolie (a mutant), the new parents joyous time was cut short when a few hours after their babies were born, a nurse came to tragically inform them that Gemma’s sibling had died. Confused, they asked how that could possibly happen, that they were fine earlier in the day. They explained to them that it looked as if their baby had been layered with crystal, the material unfortunately covering the nose and mouth and crushing several bones. It was then that Gemma’s parents realized that she had inherited the x-gene from her mother, something that prior to her, had been dormant for nearly 3 generations.

Since the incident, Gemma is given a shot everyday to suppress her powers until her parents deemed her old enough (10) to start learning how to properly maintain them.

In elementary school she meets Elijah ‘Eli’ Hardin, another mutant with the power of technopathy and who would end up becoming the best friend she always needed. They stuck by each other through thick and thin; Eli being her protector and hero and Gemma being his rock, keeping him grounded.

Throughout high school, Gemma would notice that Eli was starting to become distant with her, hanging around other mutants and beginning to spend less and less time with her. In junior year he disappears completely, causing Gemma to go to his house only to be met with his alcoholic foster parent. He tells her that he doesn’t know his whereabouts and after following a list of dead end clues, she concluded that he was gone.

Now alone once again, Gemma was desperate for a friend which unfortunately landed her in the middle of a prank orchestrated by a group of popular kids. Knowing that Eli wasn’t by her side anymore, they took full advantage of it, humiliating Gemma in front of a crowd as a petty revenge for the times Eli defended her. The prank backfired however, causing Gemma to panic and lose control of her powers. She accidentally set off an attack of crystal and sent them flying into the crowd, severely injuring those around her.

It’s later when Charles Xavier approached Gemma and her family, promising a safe haven for her and a way to properly get a hold of herself at the School For Gifted Youngsters and where she remains currently.

Fun Facts

— She’s a vegetarian!

— She likes to practice her clown painting on Eli, along with other types of makeup and also paints his nails.

— While she’s grateful for being in Xavier’s school, she fears for the time she has to put her powers to use because she doesn’t like having the responsibility of other people’s lives in her hands.

— Her favorite painting is a watercolor by Winslow Homer, “Two Boys Watching Schooners” because it reminds her of her and Eli. Some other favorites include “Flower Garden and Bungalow, Bermuda” (Winslow Homer), “Picking Wildflowers” (Rhonda Holmes Nicholls), and “Red Canna” (Georgia O’Keeffe).

— Her cat is named after Stitches from Animal Crossing.

— For one Halloween she dressed as Jamie Lloyd’s clown from Halloween 4.

— Her style is almost reminiscent of the 80’s and Beverly Marsh (young) from IT (2019).

Remember when we talked about Gemma buying him a System of a Down vinyl? 🥺 That'd be something he'd be proud of. Other than that, he doesn't have a whole lot of 'his' stuff.

No, but he claims that it's only because he doesn't want to be, and that if he actually tried, he'd be an expert. (He wouldn't)

9. What is a topic your character would be excited to talk about?

Technology! He'd love to talk about the 'music' he hears every day from the machines around him. How they work, how they 'talk', how they have personalities.

He also loves to talk about music. Even if it's Gemma rattling off some K-Pop lyrics, he still finds interest in it.

Gemma’s Powers

Gemma’s has the power of Crystallokinesis; able to create, disassemble, shape, and manipulate crystals and crystalline materials.

The crystals come directly from her body and as long as she’s touching them in some way, she can control and manipulate them.

Later on after attending Xavier’s school for some time, she learns that she can crystallize liquids (water, blood, etc) however she must be touching what she is going to turn.

Some of her abilities include—

Crystal Form:

Gemma is able turn her entire body into crystal, making her almost invincible to certain attacks. Similar to Diamondhead (Ben 10) and Kole (DC), the only difference in appearance is that the crystals that cover her body are jagged and uneven, making it difficult to land a physical attack on her. She can also control where on her body the crystals form, so she doesn’t necessarily always have to shroud her entire self.

Projectiles:

Gemma can send out rapid attacks from her hands and even have them travel across surfaces.

Crystal Prison:

Gemma is able to encase people or objects, except they will take the shape of whatever it is rather than like the picture below.

Manipulate:

Gemma can disassemble, rebuild, and shape any crystals from her body.

Crystalline Materials:

— She can break down and put them together.

— Able to absorb the material into her body.

— Reshape
