i think i burned the cupcakes.

    the chef inspected the overly baked goods in question with     a slight cant of her head. there was no doubting it, the cupcakes     were indeed burnt — the two were simply too distracted     with their conversation that the cakes met their fiery doom     in the oven as they chatted away.

    this would be when you’d expect the unsalvageable cupcakes     to find a new home within the bin, something that always     happened in Hanako’s kitchen at Honnouji Academy whenever     one of her club members made a mistake with their cooking,     but no. 

    the girl lifted one of the cakes to her mouth and took a bite,     all with her infamous pokerface.

     She sighs our of relief--so he wasn’t mad or anything. Maka’s heart slowed down to a soft rhythm and she stood up straighter to greet him normally. They barely knew each other and it didn’t help that he looked imposing as hell; he could probably squash her head with his ring finger & thumb if he wanted to. “I was, but you’ve eased my worries. You’re one of Ryuuko’s fiends, right?”--she saw them talking, all friendly-like, a while ago. It didn’t seem like it was too big of a deal because the building didn’t get broken all that much. And the door remained intact too, so that’s a plus. Lord Death gave her a mouthful about the people Maka somehow got to know, though.

She did not even hesitate in shooting down Gamagoori’s point. To experience someone else’s pain? The idea was just too much to propose to someone who already knew pain and violence, it was difficult to imagine the possibility of feeling another person’s pain as anything more than that—pain. Ryuko knew what a bruise felt like and she knew how open cuts and scrapes would respond to air. You could label the pain in any sort of way, from irritating to piercing and excruciating, but in the end it is simply pain and once you have got used to having pain ( and dishing it out in kind ), it becomes simple. To feel someone else’s pain wouldn’t add anything more than another nuisance to be had, another brand of the same that everyone feels and becomes accustomed to.

To experience each other’s pain would be nothing more than that—a redundancy.

❛ That’d be stupid an’ pointless! What are ya’ supposed ta’  gain outta somethin’ like that? Feelings for one another?  Pain doesn’t build friendships and it sure as hell shouldn’t  define ‘em either! What’s next? You gonna say somethin’  ‘long th’ lines that “people wouldn’t fight if they knew each  other better”? Keep that idealistic crap where it belongs,  in th’ back of a fairy tale. ❜

Switching from foot first to head, the sight of those sharply lined stairs flashed across his sight before his body tapped into instinct.

Jutting a hand forward, the dusty expanse of the stair would bare the brunt of his weight as a landing was made. Shifting his weight by his terms compared to gravity’s, Sanageyama then sprung off the limb and resumed the descent with an agile flip in the air. The bit of air time gained would be used to position himself, nailing a safe landing upon his rear upon the metallic railing of the staircase instead. Riding the momentum as he slid down to the bottom level, a content cheer could be proudly heard on the way down.

He glances upward, stolen from thought-- the unusually large man has returned, with an offering, it seemed. He hasn't had much to eat today, accepting it half out of bafflement. A sense of good intent had made the gift easier to accept. He holds it for a moment, staring at it, before looking up at his newfound company.
