This is my first time writing a letter, so I hope it's alright. Anyways, I would like to say thank you for being one of my very first vessels. I would like to clear up some confusion on how I may have treated you as a vessel. From my understanding, people think of the creator as only one person. However that's not the case, i'm merely one of two gods. Me and my brother are supposed to act as one god, but he has no interest in your world so it's just me for now. I would like to apologize for my brother's behavior towards you and the other vessels, he was reckless and almost got you killed multiple times. I know it can't erase the memories of almost dying, but I would like to give you a fluffy cat plushie and a friendship bracelet since I consider you more of a friend than a vessel or anything similar to that. xingqiu walked towards liyue harbor, one hand on chongyun’s back and the other propping open a book. another exorcism had gone… less than ideally, he’ll say, since the spirit was repelled by chongyun’s yang energy and not his thaumaturgy. the spirit was gone nonetheless, but it always got him down in the dumps.

slipping a bookmark in his novel, xingqiu shut it with a snap. ”alright, let’s hurry up and get back to the harbor, okay? how about i… treat you to wanmin restaurant, hm?”

chongyun’s hands paused in the air, his blue eyes narrowing. “you can’t order me jueyun chili chicken again, xingqiu.”

“now who said i’d do that?”

“you always ask xiangling for spice on the side! and after today, my yang energy is especially volatile, so i can’t be exposed to-“

“fine, whatever,” he huffed, but a smile was on his face. he kicked a stray rock off the path, eyeing the distance between them and the harbor. the sun had set already, and the city did look quite beautiful. “black-back perch stew, then?”

“you know that- xingqiu!”

before he could react, chongyun had pulled him away from whatever was behind him, his claymore pulled from nowhere.

“get back. it could be an evil spirit.”

xingqiu leaned over his friend’s shoulder, trying to see what had set off his alarms. he’s not surprised that chongyun sensed something before he did, but he is surprised at what had set him off.

hovering at the point of chongyun’s blade was a spiked ball, floating in place. it bumped into the sharp point, and though gold dust fell, it didn’t seem to be affected.

“…it looks like a lantern.”

“you never know what it could be. liyue is a dangerous place outside of the harbor, filled with-“

“wouldn’t spirits be repelled by your yang energy?”

“…”

xingqiu glanced at his book, deemed it replaceable, then reached over chongyun’s shoulder.

“xingqiu-“

“it’s fine, it’s not like it’ll explode.” he tapped the ball with the edge of his book. “see? harmless.”

hesitantly, chongyun’s claymore disappeared back into his inventory. “that was incredibly risky of you.”

“mhm.” he stepped around him, seeing the ball for himself. it gave off a faint warmth, and was remarkably bright.

“i’m serious. even if it’s not haunted by an evil spirit-“

“we decided it wasn’t.”

“-it could still be dangerous. what about if it was a trap sent by the fatui?”

“the fatui aren’t nearly smart enough.” before he could be stopped, xingqiu reached and picked up the ball, turning it over in his hand. to his surprise, the shell quickly began to crumble, and he rushed to catch the items that fell from it.

despite the ball having been in his palm, he was only able to fumble for the envelope, his hand blocked by the remains of the shell. thankfully, chongyun caught both the plush and bracelet.

xinqiu put his book in his inventory and straightened, pulling out the invisible creases in his clothes. “what, checking them for curses?”

“no, this toy is too unstable to harbor any harmful energy, the bracelet doesn’t have any charms. woven string on its own is not nearly enough to hold curses or jinxes.”

xingqiu ripped open the envelope, pulling out the sheet of paper inside it. “then why did you take them?”

“there was no way you could have held them on your own. you weren’t quick enough to catch them.”

ah.

“what does the letter say? is it signed?”

xingqiu recovered quickly, reading your letter aloud. he paused for a moment on your last line, but kept his voice level over it. it was interesting to think that there were two gods presiding over teyvat, and he’s certain he should bring his letter to somebody higher up to help spread the knowledge… but that was for later.

chongyun was silent through most of it, fiddling with the bracelet and plush in his hands. then, finally, “how could you be their favorite?”

“what? h-hey!”

inspired by an established zhongven idea i had with my friend where venti writes romantic stories about the two of them together and it gets really popular in liyue to the point of there being an actual book club and hu tao and childe and enjou and xingqiu are all super into it and zhongli doesn’t actually know that venti’s behind all this

i never did write the part 2 to that immortal post. maybe that will be next. also don’t think too hard about the privacy laws or anything just accept that it could be possible lmao

you needed a bit of extra cash. drawing on the brothers’ unique knowledge of things (satan’s romance books, mammon and valuing things, etc.), you publish very popular stories about dating them. you think you might expand to diavolo next.

the brothers are snickering away, but you look on with interest.

he hits the middle and after that, it’s all over. you immediately become the protagonist, and he devours the pages faster than satan could ever hope to

reads it again. and again. and again; finding little details that he missed before, mammon accidentally got dirt on the cover while he was sneaking around lucifer’s room, and lucifer tossed him out a window

“glad to see you’re enjoying the book,” you say to him at some point, winking at him. “you know, a little birdie tells me there’s a sequel coming out soon.”

doesn’t quite catch on that you’re the author, but you can be damn sure he bought that second book too

MAMMON

“what if people think you’re a loser for buying your own romance book” he visibly wilts

you scowl at the speaker, and then say “mammon i think you’re so cool and brave for buying the book! i’m out of money but i was looking at buying it too!!”

silence. the jealousy is thick in the air. why did you want to read a romance book about falling in love with MAMMON, MC?

anyway, mammon stutters over his usual “well yeah why wouldn’t you”, then settles into his room to read it and escape his brothers’ piercing stares.

he is astonished by how the story portrays him. is the author a greed demon? no, not even the lower demons of his sin know about this.

DEVOURS the book. as soon as he realises the MC is lovely and kind, he immediately sticks you in the main spot. he’s the fastest to do this out of all the brothers

he rereads it the most, too. again and again and again, and then he remembers you said you were interested in it, so…

awkwardly hands you this dog-eared copy of a mammon love story, you smile so brightly up at him that he thinks he might collapse

you read his well-read book and can tell all the parts where he got emotional, from the tear stains to the crinkles in the page. this book is the one you were most gentle with, since he’s your first and all…

knowing he enjoyed it this much gives you a high that lasts for weeks, and the idea for a sequel!

he buys it and then promptly forgets about it until a month later when he sees it on a high shelf in the kitchen (he got distracted)

dusts off the cover and reads it while he waits for one of his brothers to cook dinner. has a side snack anyway though, and gets crumbs all over the pages. you smile fondly when you see this

beel is mesmerised by this book. it takes him a little while to get into it, but he keeps reading because there’s not really anything else he could fit in. BOY is his patience rewarded!

between kissing this main character and them gently reassuring him and treating him exactly as- hey, wait a second.

anyway, he totally loves it. reads it all the way through dinner, but nobody tells him to put the book down, even though satan gets told off for it all the time

after dinner he says he’ll do cleanup and then immediately wants to talk to you during it. you kind of have an idea what it’s about

why lyney x aether just makes sense

no traveller ship has ever rlly worked to me (other than ayaka bc it was very heavily hinted in canon) UNTIL TODAY. HERE IS MY FORMAL DISSERTATION ON WHY LYNETHER WORKS

neither of them have pairs - genshin purposefully does this thing where they pair up characters (eg: chongyun & xingqiu, jean & lisa) which is why there are so many popular ships in the fandom. i think lyney's effective pair is meant to be lynette & aether doesnt have one bc hes meant to be a player-insert but that leaves SO MUCH ROOM bc when you think about it the closest thing lyney has to a love interest IS AETHER

siblings - both of them are elder brothers and both are TWINS . they also both have a youngest sibling figure (freminet and paimon; dont tell me paimon isnt a younger sister figure bc if u open a modern au ALMOST ALWAYS she is presented as "aether and lumines younger sister") their backstories are similar (losing their other half) so they canonically understand each other (There's nothing in the world I treasure more than my family, so I know what it must be like for you -Lyney, Friendship LV4) THIS LEADS INTO MY OTHER POINT

the "i see past your mask" trope - this is a very popular trope (and one that ngl kills me everytime i read it bc it preys on the human desire to be fully understood) BUT it was made for lyney . if youve watched ouran highschool host club HIKARU AND KAORUS "we are the only two who understand each other... until haruhi arrived" IS NOT DISSIMILAR TO WHAT COULD HAPPEN WITH LYNEY, LYNETTE AND AETHER . and lyney was BORN to fit this trope bc he already has the whole fake, charming, extrovert persona he puts on. ("Actually, the real me is nowhere near as outgoing or chatty as I appear. (...) I think people would feel sorry for the real me." -Lyney, friendship LV6)

narrative - a big thing about ships is they need to have a faucet for tension . like xingyun is extremely hinted in canon but its nowhere near as popular as kavetham and zhongchi. why? because theyre just childhood best friends. nothing interesting about it. zhongchi especially is hugely popular bc of the potential for reconciliation after the osial arc (zhongli's "im sorry for manipulating you. it wasnt all fake i swear" sorta thing) AND YK WHAT ELSE HAS THAT??? FURINA REVEALING LYNEY AS FATUI IN THE TRIAL "im sorry for lying about my identity. it wasnt all fake" the core that makes ships like satosugu and zhongchi tragic is the betrayal of trust, and, well... ("Nothing could make me happier than having your trust." -Lyney, Ascension 4)

binary opposition - why is satosugu so popular? probably because its the whole 'cruel murderer villain' vs 'strongest hero' trope and audienced like sun vs moon . okay . AETHER IS LITERALLY THE HONORARY KNIGHT OF MONDSTADT, HERO OF LIYUE, ENEMY OF ETERNITY, FIRST SAGE OF BUER and lyney is THE FUTURE SUCCESSOR TO THE HOUSE OF HEARTH . the villain of genshin impact (currently) is the fatui so you cant get better than this.

canon hints - even if ships would theoretically work well and have potential for tension, they need to be grounded in the source material. so does lynether have that?
