I haven't bumped into many headcanons for what Xie Lian's parents would say if they knew about Dianxia's husband but I like to believe that we'd all agree Xie Lian's mum would see how happy he is with Hua Cheng and she'd immediately think he's the best blessing his son was ever given, even above ascension. Scenario 1 is some kind of time travel au where Xie Lian sort of kidnaps Hong'er (who is absolutely on board with that obviously thank you very much) and he's like "yeah he's small for now but when he grows up and strong I'm gonna marry him in the meantime if anything happens to him I'm gonna kill everyone in Xianle and then myself" and when she finds out how he lives and how he's treated she'd mother him soooo hard. Scenario 2 is "meeting the parents as Ghost King" au. You think you saw full Hua Cheng charm with the Guoshi? He'd flatter her any chance he gets and listen to all the stories of Xie Lian she can tell and eat any food she makes and ask for seconds and suggest new recipes and compliment any name she chooses for them and she'd be just. Ecstatic. Starts wedding-planning months before either doofus even gathers the courage to propose.

✨️TGCF Head-Canon✨️
We both know Hua Cheng has the most absolute sorry excuse for chicken scratch hand writing that Xie Lian has ever laid eyes upon. Xie Lian would have known from book 1 the Hua Cheng was down bad if he was able to read the scribbles on that man's arm the firs time he saw the tattoo.
THAT BEING SAID, we also know Xie Lian is God awful cook. Let's not judge baby boy too hard, he got it from his mama, and I'm assuming cooking this way could be a means to keeping her close. Especially after his punk ass cousin desecrated her resting place.
What if these two wrongs made a right?
One day Xie Lian realizes he has been name dropping a lot of recipes lately and he wants to keep track of them. So he decides it's high time he start making a recipe card or books. And since he loves his husband so much and wants to ensure he keeps practicing his writing, he suggests Hua Cheng scribe for him.
Nervous about his atrocious writing, he hesitantly agrees and sits down with Xie Lian to write down ingredients and instructions.
Fast forward to a week later. Feng Xin and Mu Qing have arrived just in time for dinner. Much to their dismay Hua Cheng was the one who greeted them so they couldn't run away once he told them "Ah you two....actually perfect timing, Gege made extra."
The two generals looks as though they were being shipped off to war as they waiting for their bowls to be served. "Ah Mu Qing, Feng Xin! I wasn't expecting you two to stop by today! Good thing dinner was prepared. Its a recipe I'vebmade before so, its nothing new." Xie Lian said with a soft smile.
The two generals steeled themselves as they thought back to all the past 'receipes' they have been subjected to in the past.
"You think he heard about our fight yesterday?" Mu Qing whispered.
"He must have...he's punishing us, I know it..." Feng Xin whispered back.
Xie Lian approached the table with a hot pot and placed it in the center. "I apologize in advance, the flavor seems to be a little different." He said softly. He had actually struggled to read the recipe cards Hua Cheng had dutifully wrote out for him.
"Make sure to eat up well good generals." Hua Cheng quipped as he served Xie Lian, himself, and the other two.
Full of reluctance they begin to eat. They suddenly freeze. Xie takes their frozen expressions and worries, "Oh no! I'm sorry it's ba-" "DELICIOUS!" The generals announce in unison, as they down their bowls together.
"Your highness, we thank you for this meal!" Mu Qing speaks between slurps.
"I will find strength in your cooking Your highness!" Feng Xin says as he's helping himself to seconds.
Bonus: Xie Lian ended up making all the recipes the Hua Cheng made recipe cards for, and all of them were absolutely edible. Though he didn't know what he was doing differently, he decided to prepare buns, as a delicious offering to his mother and father then next time he went to visit.

Headcanon #13:
This one is likely canon. Xie Lian was a decent and capable cook before his parents died, but after he asked for the cursed shackle and had his luck dispersed to others, his cooking started to taste awful due to bad luck. His tendency to experiment with ingredients and create new dishes each time was a way to remember his mother and her simple excitement at making food for her son and his friends. I think he really regretted snapping at her and not appreciating her efforts until it was too late. His attempts to recreate her cooking experiments were in honor of her memory.
Later, after his shackles are shattered, Xie Lian's cooking begins to improve. At first, just by a smidgen, but over time, he gets better and better until people actually start coming to his temple just to eat his meals. He still constantly experiments with new dishes, and Hua Cheng always insists on having the first bite so he can share his thoughts on the latest creation with his gege.
Spoiler alert: It’s always perfect in Hua Cheng’s eye. After all, anything Xie Lian makes is the most delicious thing in all the Three Realms to him.

Post canon Xie Lian's Mom comes back idea:
Due to very rare, and super tragic circumstances involving similar manners of death, the woman that Xie Lian's mother reincarnated into at the time reverted to Xie Lian's mom. She's very scared, and confused, but the only thing she can really think about is finding her son. Seeing she's not in her own body she thinks she's possessed some poor unknown woman which answers some questions, but makes everything worse.
It does not help at all that it's been over 1000 years since her actual death at this point, and things have changed enough she has trouble communicating with people and just keeps getting more confused. Eventually some kind people take her to a nearby temple which just happens to be one dedicated to her son and his husband! (Personal Note: I have always headcanoned that Hua Cheng makes all the statues, and paintings for their temples himself so everything is not only super accurate but outstandingly beautiful.) That night when almost everyone else is asleep Xie Lian's mom repeats what she had seen other worshipers doing and prays to hualian for help. She doesn't even get half way through before Xie Lian, and Hua Cheng show up. Cue tearful reunion, because even if she's in a different body Xie Lian knows that she is absolutely his mom. They wait till the morning, and hualian in different forms tell the people who had been helping her that she's a relative they have been looking for, thank them, and take his mom to straight to paradise manor, skipping the city they don't want to risk traumatizing her further. They take some time to explain what's happened, and help her settle in. Hua Cheng who already suspects what has actually happened does some research, while getting to know his mother-in-law. It does not take her long to come to adore to her son-in-law. He's charming, intelligent, likes her cooking, and most importantly it's obvious just how happy he's made her Lianlian!
After a while Hua Cheng confirms this is (what I have decided to call) incarnation resurgence. Speaking to Xie Lian and Yin Yu he honestly thinks whatever happened to current incarnation it's most likely impossible to bring her back, and attempting to do so would only pull up another previous incarnation, and possibly damage her soul. But he admits he's 1: only seen this once before as it's so rare, and 2: Incredibly biased toward keeping Xie Lian's mom around, and letting her live out the rest her life in this mortal body. So he grits his teeth, and suggest just to be certain Xie Lian's mom can stay with no negative consequences that they get Mei Nianqing who may have more experience with this.
Also at some point Feng Xin, and Mu Qing found out, and had to smile, and nod while dying inside as the former queen of Xian Le sang the praises of their friend's husband. (There is also an extra bit of horror when they find out how Xie Lian's parents died, because Xie Lian never told them, and Xie Lian's mom didn't know that.) Anyway Mei Nianqing eventually arrives, and after doing his own spiritual examination of Xie Lian's mom agrees with Hua Cheng that the best thing is to let her stay. And so Xie Lian, and his mom make a big dinner for everyone together, and Xie Lian just gives everyone apologetic looks while Hua Cheng thoroughly enjoys the meal(and everyone else's suffering.) while giving Xie Lian's mom compliments, and offers a few pointers about it.

He sees Feng Xin right outside and he's unable to look away from the red in his eyes, nose and cheeks. The sight tugs at his heart and he almost breaks down himself before he reaches out with a gentle hand to cup his cheek.
He caresses the skin with his thumb and whispers "Feng Xin..! No…"
---
He stares ahead, letting his eyes rest as he appreciates how pretty his Highness is even when his eyebrows are knit in worry. His eyes are so round and warm, the slope of his nose so gentle, his hair frames his face so nicely. Its agonizing. It only makes the pain in his chest worse.
"How did this happen.. What did I do wrong.."

Tonight's crying topic: the tiny ghost fire that tried to protect Xie Lian from White No-Face. It got between them knowing it's too small to shield him from the monster. Knowing it's not powerful enough to make a difference. But it tried. And it mattered.

When I first watched the tgcf anime(i watched it before reading the books) the only thing I could think of was how beautiful Xie Lian is. When I first read the comic, I could only think about how beautiful Xie Lian is. When I read the books(finally) I could only think of how beautiful Xie Lian is....

pre-marriage hualian walk into a store with all kinds of merchandise and Hua Cheng is following Xie Lian around with his trigger finger ready on his gold plated debit card, as he’s wont to do. He sees an iconic live laugh love sign and he thinks to himself “corny ass Facebook sign” as an offhand thought but doesn’t dwell on it. Seconds afterwards he hears a small gasp from Xie Lian below him followed by “San lang, look! ‘Live laugh love’. Isn’t that so sweet?” He loves it. He wants to make one himself and hang it in the house. Just so you know, the next thought going on in Hua Cheng’s head right about now is “I would die for him"

New TGCF au (book 4 arc)
Xie Lian actually fucking dies in the 100 sword scene and BWX is like wtf.
He returns home after a while. He doesn't feel anything anymore, but doesn't know if it's just the trauma. It isn't until Feng Xin notices he's literally not breathing that he learns he's dead.
And when he asks what's wrong, Xie Lian can't do anything but scream. His mother comforts him, and in her arms, he turns into a small kid again.
He wants to be with his parents, where he feels safe. Sleeps with them that night.
The next morning he's missing.
He went to visit the battlefield, apologizing for losing. And Wu Ming finds him.
Then they visit the palace of XianLe, because Xie Lian wants to pretend that he can keep going with his old routine.
At the end of the day, Xie Lian asks Wu Ming to help him push the swing.
They do that for a while, until (a very alarmed) Feng Xin finds them. He's overprotective of Xie Lian, but the prince insists on bringing Wu Ming home.
At some point, they manage to live all together with Wu Ming (who also does some jobs here and there to get food and money) and for the first time ever, he feels like he has a home.
I'm not sure if Ruoye will ever be born. Since Xie Lian actually died here, probably since the altar scene it's there, but... Probably... Probably his original birth will also happen.

My Qi Rong headcannon of the day (incorporating my design for him) is that like Hua Cheng, he can change his appearance so that even after he loses his mask in the second book/season, people can’t exactly say he looks like Xie Lian. My design for him really turns him into a goblin so if we pretend he looks like that then he’s intentionally becoming something as far from Xie Lian as he can, but his true form would be much more beautiful and their similarity much more prominent. But in canon he doesn’t actually have enough power to do that I don’t think? Hua Cheng is powerful enough to have multiple forms so maybe Qi Rong can get by with having only one.
And ignoring my design for him, I think this is also why he wears a mask. Pretty boy don’t like being reminded he’s related to Xie Lian.
I also have a headcannon that he was executed by decapitation with the royal xianle family so in the afterlife he has a huge scar around his neck. He’d get pissed off to find it mirrors Xie Lian’s cursed shackle.
In other words he’s trying to be something as far from Xie Lian as possible, even if he has to make himself as ugly as he can to do so.

This isn't exactly a plotbunny, but I keep imagining the absolute hilarity of a modern AU where a combination of Qi Rong, and her son's friends, and boyfriend constantly being at each other's throats has kinda conditioned Xie Lian's mom to think their behavior is completely normal, while every time she has friends visit, they end up seriously wondering if they need to call the police.

OMG XIE LIAN
OMG THEY KEPT THIS
Oh my GOD
THE CONCERN IN HIS VOICE AND ON HIS FACE
HUA CHENG LOOKS LITERALLY TERRIFYING IN HIS RAGE
I appreciate that the animators didn’t draw him “pretty” in this shot
They drew him HATEFUL
Angular, with heavy shadows
Which can almost be called ugly
In a sense that that’s how you draw characters wheh you want to emphasise that they are evil
And this is PERCECT DECISION
Because THIS IS WHAT HUA CHENG IS THINKING ABOUT HIMSELF
He thinks that this side of him IS MONSTROUS AND MUST BE UGLY TO XIE LIAN
YET LOOK AT THE WAY XIE LIAN LOOKS AT HIM-
