boyfriend xiao cares a lot, despite his struggles to communicate, he really does care about you

likes to hold your hand because it keeps him grounded and acts as a reminder that you’re always there for him and he’s always there for you

if you’re someone xiao cares about, there is nothing that he wouldn’t do to keep you safe

after living with him for a little while you notice that he’s actually really peaceful and gentle,, this side of him doesn’t get shown much but he truly enjoys being around you a lot so he feels comfortable enough to express it

even though you two had been dating for a little while, xiao still unintentionally distances himself from you. he still believes that his karmic debt will hurt you and that he shouldn’t be this close to a human

he’s never felt so close to someone before. he usually doesn’t interact with anyone,, to most people, he’s super cold and doesn’t talk much. this is completely different from how he is around you

even during his self destructive moments, you’re somehow always there to help him through it. he couldn’t thank you enough, but he still has his worries about you

even when it comes to syx, xiao was really gentle and made sure that you were ok at every stage, he definitely didn’t know what to do the first time you guys had any sort of intimate moment

when walking around the house (or wherever you guys wanna live), he clings to your waist and tries to drag you back into the bedroom (although he doesn’t mind syx anywhere else, he would rather do it in a bed than on the kitchen floor)

Characters

Yue Qingyuan. I think it will come as no surprise to anyone given my blog title and header lol. Explaining why I love him so much would turn into a full character analysis, but he is just So soggy and bitable. He tries so hard but lives in a world where he's destined to fail, both because of his background and the narrative he's trapped in. He cares so much in a world that will never reward him for that. He repeats the same mistakes over and over because he can't see an alternative path. He is SO SAD AND SO DIVORCED and so traumatized but probably has a complete inability to recognize that fact and he loves and loves and loves but love is not enough to save anyone.

Shen Jiu. He's probably the reason I'm obsessed with SVSSS, instead of just having a passing interest. A week or two after I read the novel for the first time, I started thinking about him and just ended up full on weeping. I find his character incredibly compelling; I love absolute messes, and I really really love seeing a depiction of trauma where the character does not come out stronger or "beautifully broken". It's hard not to be compelled by a character who literally represents the cycle of abuse, who is allowed by the narrative to be both tragic victim and heinous abuser, who is allowed to show what abuse does to people. On a lighter note, I find his younger personality very funny, especially with his dynamic with Yue Qi. He's an absolute gremlin and he lends well to absurdity in lighter fics.

Luo Binghe. Who doesn't love the protagonist!! My reasons for loving Binghe overlap with my reasons for loving SJ— they're foils after all— but I think the core of it is that Binghe is just Deeply Human. He’s just a little guy who’s desperate to be loved. He’s a poorly trained puppy biting down to hold on to the only person who’s ever treated him properly. He’s never done anything wrong in his life.

Shen Qingqiu. His internal dialogue/ narration is why SVSSS is so fun to read! He’s the man shaping this tragedy into a comedy. He’s so insane and so unselfaware, I need to dissect him. Ultimately he’s just a really fun character! 10/10 would chuck him at a wall.

Liu Qingge. He has sword autism what more need I say. I don't talk about him as much on here because my interpretation of him tends to contradict fanon, but I love him so much and I shove him into so many OT3s. Bonus: Qi Qingqi and Mu Qingfang. They're the two background characters with minimal characterization I've latched on to and created massive sprawling headcanons for. This is mostly because I think they are both very sexy.

Moments So fun fact I have clinical memory issues and it’s been a little bit since I read all of SVSSS, so this is WAY harder for me, and I'll definitely miss something. But of what I can recall: 

Xiao Jiu threatening to bash another boy’s head in with a rock, and Yue Qi saying “he didn’t mean it”, even though SJ Definitely Meant It and YQ Definitely Knew That. I just find it cute when children are violent I guess 🤣 (Cheng Qian my beloved), and It kind of foreshadows their later dynamic where YQY covers for SQQ without question— YQY thinks he’s doing the same thing as when they were kids, and SQQ thinks YQY is trying to sweep a troublesome mess under the rug. In general, YQY puts a lot more value on their times as slaves than SQQ does/ is more nostalgic for it (probably because YQY’s Intensely traumatic moments were after he joined CQMS, whereas the worst parts of SQQ’s life were all before that point (until Bingge lol))

YQY paying for SQQ’s gambling at the the IAC. Canonized his findom kink.

“My hand slipped 🙂” YQY’s sexist moment in the book imo. Makes me scream on reread. 

CQMS will always stand by you 🥹🥹🥹 (honestly any moment where LQG/YQY/the other PLs go to bat for SQQ)

I’m gonna list mainly Chinese media in this list, though, because that’s what I consume more. And ha! How brave, asking an ND person like me for recs. Prepare to be bombarded by my rambling!

Starting off with the media currently featured in my header (excluding Blue Lock coz most of my mutuals already know that)...

1. The Earth is Online (danmei* novel)

* Danmei - Chinese boys love stories

The plot basically: Everyone on Earth is pulled into a death game.

A good intro to the unlimited flow* genre. Each instance is thrilling and complex. The boys love aspect is not much, as it focuses on plot, but it’s definitely not subtle. The characters are also quite diverse. Most UF novels just focus on the Chinese characters and revolve around what happens in China, but this one actually features those from other countries. I also like how the protagonist isn’t treated as the entire world’s savior. Other people around the world are also doing their part.

Where to read: An official English release is coming out in 2024. Translations will be done by luckkoi, the fan translator. As such, they've taken down their translations online. There's an alternate translation by @leonsrightlations , but only a few chapters are out right now. There are several completed translations online, but they're all edited mtl (machine translation). If you don't mind that, you can go google it. I recommend the one by Rainbow Mushroom. Their translations require a password, though, and you can find that on their Discord server.

* unlimited flow - Chinese genre of web novels where the protagonist is pulled into different instances to complete challenges which, if failed, would result in punishment or even death. It’s basically the death game genre, but instead of just one game, there are multiple.

2. Legend of Hei movie + Legend of Luo Xiaohei series sequel (donghua*)

(I downloaded this video from YouTube years ago. I can no longer find it there, so I’m reuploading it here…)

* Donghua – Chinese anime

A story about the young cat demon Xiao Hei and his quest to find a new home after humans destroyed his old one. Cute cat + cool powers + awesome fighting scenes + clean and crisp animation.

You can watch this on Netflix, but it’s not available in all countries. There’s an English and Japanese dub available, but I strongly recommend watching it in the original Chinese. (I can send you the full movie with English subtitles if you want). The series, which takes place after the movie, can be watched on YouTube. S1 of the series is more slice of life, but s2 is action-packed.

3. Low Tide in Twilight (BL manhwa)

That BL trope where the bottom has a mountainload of debt, while the top gives him a way out… except, not really, coz the male lead Taeju is partly the creditor, and he’s forcing Euihyun into a relationship with him in exchange for money.

Typical BL story with an initially toxic couple, but better. Complex characters, and a manhwa that relies more on the art to tell the story instead of the words. Also, Taeju gives off that same annoying but hot vibe as Kaiser. What more do you want?

4. Link Click (donghua)

The title (时光代理人) would be literally translated as “Time Agents.” I have no idea why the official English title is Link Click.

The plot basically: Two guys with time-related powers run a photography shop, where they accept orders from clients to dive back in time through a photo.

Funimation did this donghua so dirty by not promoting it more back when it aired in 2021. The English subs were also terrible.

Did you know that it used to rank #20 in MAL, surpassing MP 100 S2, Jujutsu Kaisen, and many other mainstream anime? Now, it’s ranked #41 on MAL, lower than before, but still pretty high for a donghua on MAL. That’s just how good it is.

Here’s a link to the blu-ray version with fansubs. Just pick the normal English track option and not English (CR).

Edit: OKAAAY, it turns out that link has the episode order all mesed up. Just ask me if you need an HD copy with good fansubs.

5. White Cat Legend 2020 (donghua)

Title (大理寺日志) would be literally translated as The Journal of Dali Court.

Another cat boy donghua! Can you tell I just love cats?

The plot: Chen Shi travels from the countryside to the big city to search for his missing brother and inadvertently ends up working at Dali court under the cat guy Li Bing.

Slice of Life + Comedy + Drama + Supernatural + Mystery + Action

Baiting you with a hot guy gif~

It's a historical show btw, so expect some references to real-life events.

The animation is also really smooth in this one! You can watch it on YouTube. Here's a link to episode 1.

Season 2 is also out! I'm yet to watch it, though. I should really do some time...

PSYCHE NOTES:

xiao - 2nd year. came from an ancestral family that made people think he was an omen growing up, they were rich though so he came to not care. Resident campus emo guy. got forced into venti’s band by proxy for being his roommate. Studies in business econ and looks to take over his predecessor’s line of work.

aether - 1st year. supposedly the nicest of the group, shares an apartment with heizou and another and is one of the closer ones to y/n. met xiao at cram school and venti through a music program (that he failed). Now takes liberal arts and minors in music theory.

venti - 3rd year. jokes about alcoholism maybe a bit too much, professors either love or hate him. has wanted to be in a band with others since high school but people always ended up ditching on him. he gets serious and profound sporadically and it’ll nerve anyone around him that wasn’t expecting or used to it. Music and literature major.

heizou - 2nd year. number 1 in the group for ‘things that would get them in trouble’. aether’s roommate, was the reason they even got the apartment. also number 1 info source for practically anything relevant on campus! in criminology and history.

fun facts:

heizou and y/n first met in middle school! making them the longest friends overall

the science branch of students has asked venti for his blood qualities many times for their thesis over the years (some has started doing theories on why he’s also been around long enough for this many reports that feature him)

aether and lumine had very different imageries when they both thought of ‘water fountain’ for a header

xiao was aware of aethers twin sister and her friend in highschool but no other knowledge other than that

Also some people seem to not know what this fic is titled? If you can’t read the header image, it’s always written in the tags too. The title is, “It Started With a Kiss” and yes I got made fun of for that title name 

After an anxiety-rising week, Saturday finally came, and Y/n prepared themself to meet up with Scaramouche. They had no idea what he could have been planning. But he was their best friend, he had been for years, so they told themself that there was no reason to worry nor fear. If they had known just how much this one night would change between themself and Scaramouche, would they have actually gone? 

Around 4pm, Y/n walked out of their room and waited in the livingroom, where Xiao was already sitting with a book. But they paid him no mind, Scaramouche would be there any moment. After a minute or two, Venti walked out of his own room, presumably heading for the kitchen, but he paused once he saw Y/n. “What are you dressed for? It’s a Saturday afternoon,” he inquired. “I’m going out with Kuni,” Y/n answered. Venti tilted his head curiously, “Eh, Kuni? Is he the guy you ended up with after Hu Tao’s party or…?” 

Y/n’s face flushed, “N..No! He’s--” A groan of annoyance came from Xiao, “‘Kuni’ is Y/n’s best friend, Venti.” “Ohhhh, that emo with the pretty eyes and bowl haircut?” “...Yes.” Venti shrugged, seemingly disinterested before disappearing into the kitchen. But his voice was still heard, “So, you going on a date with him or…?” “No! Well- He called it a date but… I’m not sure.” Y/n answered. “Oooo, sounds like someone has a crush on you, Y/n.” Venti whistled. 

Y/n scoffed, “He was probably just teasing me. I-” A knock at the door interrupted them. A sigh of relief escaped Y/n, “Well, that’s my cue to go! See ya, don’t wait up.” They called as they walked towards the door. As they opened it, they were greeted by Scaramouche, “Hey Y/n, ready to head out?” “Yes! Let’s go.” “Make sure to use protection~” Venti teased as he walked into the livingroom and sat next to Xiao, only to get slapped by the man in question. Y/n blushed and slammed the door shut. 

“..What was that about?” Scaramouche questioned. “Just Venti being annoying again. Don’t mind him please.” With no further words exchanged, the two walked to Scaramouche’s car and drove to a cafe in town. They got their order to go and drove down to the park for a walk. “...You know, this is really nice, Scara. I never expected you to be the type to take me to a cafe and on a walk. Feels a bit too romantic, don’t you think?” “What do you mean? I said this was a date, didn’t I?” 

Y/n froze, “You were serious?” Scaramouche chuckled, “Friends can take each other on dates, can’t they? Does it have to mean anything?” Y/n blushed and turned away, “I suppose it doesn’t.” A comfortable silence fell between them as they sat down on a nearby bench, the sun beginning to settle over the horizon. Y/n stared out at it, admiring the beauty of the sky. Yet Scaramouche’s gaze seemed to be occupied by them rather than the view before them. 

Y/n turned to look at him, “Scara? Is something the matter?” He shook his head in response, “Nothing just…” Scaramouche brought a hand up to rest against the side of Y/n’s face as he shuffled slightly closer, “Y/n…” he breathed, looking into their eyes. 

“Can I kiss you?”
