Happy 19th Anniversary Pokémon XD, my favourite game ever!

To commemorate the occasion, I've spent the last week and a half hand painting the game's cover! It was a lot of work, but I'm really happy with how it turned out!

One-upping all of his subordinates, Greevil uses a team of six Shadow Pokémon, three of which being the Legendary Birds, Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres!

This battle is difficult, to put it mildly. I suspect it wouldn't be so bad if I weren't trying to snag his entire team, but we managed to pull through in the end, thanks in no small part to our newest ally, XD001, tanking all of those high-powered Shadow Moves.

I've long been inspired by @edgymilkshakeart's Shadow Lugia model repaint and today I finally made my own!

I got this Lugia kit for my birthday a couple months back and figured spray painting this might be easier and quicker than trying to repaint it (or my other Lugia figure) with acrylics. Couldn't really go outside to spray so outside in the apartment building hallway it was.

In the Lab lol ...unfortunately the grey paint was somehow a thicker and goopier consistency than the purple one? So I ended up with this lumpy, peeling tummy part . Ah well.

This is continuing from the idea of Wes being the main villain for XD instead of Greevil. It feels that it would be tons of fun!

Lacey got out of bed in the middle of the night. She's been having trouble keeping the body asleep ever since her conversation with Izanami. Why is it that she had creation powers separate from Heidi? What made her so special to even be considered adjacent to an Arceus? She's a shadow Pokémon, after all. Not only that, but she still continued to think about Izanami's thought about independence…. To consider that she could develop into something different…. How much would she develop if she were to become something that's not just Heidi's and her sisters' protectors? Would she become something closer to an Arceus than Heidi, or would she become something else?

Lacey walked out the door and walked downstairs. As she scaled down to the first floor, she started fixating on her hand. A shadowy aura started encircling it as she concentrated some of her power there. Then, a bit of light shined through the aura. It's then she had a thought: if the power to create was a power of her own, then how would it interact with her existing Shadowy abilities?

There was one way that she could find out….

Within XD001's chamber, the Shadow Lugia was sitting upright in the bed. She couldn't sleep – not like this. Despite her best attempts, she could feel a signature approaching, something that she was drawn to. Yet, this aura wasn't Melony. No, Melony would have simply appeared through the floor and hopped in the bed by now. Instead, it was something else that was gathering her attention. XD001 continued to sit on the bed and stare towards the reinforced door.

Then, the reinforced door started making sounds of unlocking before slowly opening, revealing the entity on the other side.

"XD001, the Gale of Darkness." Lacey let herself inside.

"…" XD001 looked up at her. She wanted to know what Lacey is planning.

"…" Lacey sat on the edge of the bed and lightly grabbed XD001's hands. "XD001. I thank you for being awake at such a time."

XD001 tilted her head. It wasn't like Lacey to thank her for something. Instead, she would normally just check in and give her a midnight snack before leaving to prevent a shadow overflow on either of their ends. Was something different this time?

Lacey looked down at their hands. XD001 hadn't moved them on her own, allowing the younger sister to be their guide. Looking at her own hands, the shadowy aura from before had dissipated, leaving just bare palms. She plans on bringing it back, but first…. "I… wish to attempt to extract your Shadow energy once again. I know that it is rather late for this attempt, but there is something new that I wish to try."

XD001 blinked. This must have been on Lacey's mind for some time to burst in here in the middle of the night to make this request. Still, to think that Lacey would want to try again at trying to purify her or extracting her Shadow Energy was surprising, considering that she overwhelmed herself last time. XD001 flared a little bit of her shadow energy.

Lacey shook her head. "I understand that the last time we attempted this, I fell to the ground and passed out in pain, but this time is different. I wish to combine two of my abilities to see how… differently this will play out."

XD001 raised a brow. Is Lacey planning on using Heidi's creation abilities for this? What would that even accomplish? Still, it's not like her to deny Lacey of her curiosities. Lacey was the only one to defeat her in combat so far. So, XD001 nodded.

"Thank you. I ensure to not risk fainting this time, but should I do, please let me rest on the floor here for Melony to pick me up."

XD001 nodded once more.

The Shadowy aura around Lacey's hands started to return again, followed by a light one. Lacey sighed, allowing the two energies to transfer to XD001. Lacey's back glowed, dispelling Shadow energy continuously and at an increasing rate. The ground lightly shook as the dispelling grew louder and more apparent, enveloping them both.

Was Lacey in over her head again?

I've always gotten the feeling that Greevil prefers Eldes over Ardos.

You see, one thing I find interesting is that, on Citadark Isle, you encounter Ardos way before you find Greevil - who appears to have chosen to keep Eldes (and only Eldes) by his side. Now, this could also be chalked up to Ardos' rashness, as seen in scene with Zook where he's the one taking initiative and talking about chasing him. However, if Greevil felt like he needed or wanted Ardos there anyway he would just order him to stay, so at the very least we can say that he's fine with not having his older son with him. You could also read the Zook incident as Ardos being eager to please his father, which would fit into the picture.

Additionally, the way Greevil says

"You managed to defeat Ardos. Of course, you have also beaten so many of my followers. Perhaps it's no surprise you won."

and shortly after also says that

"I do have an appreciation for the strong, you see."

makes me think there's an underlying pattern. If you look at Greevil's dialogue, you learn that he values strength and loyalty in his followers and one of his main "issues" with them - and what even appears to be one of the main reasons behind the creation of XD001 and other Shadow Pokémon - is that he deems them unreliable. He says that

"The others can't be counted on at all." (to Eldes)

and in regards to his plans explains to Michael that

"Next, I plan to create an army of Shadow Pokémon that work independently on my orders alone. When this second step is done, I will take over the world without having to rely on bothersome people."

So how does this play into Greevil's relationship with his sons? Both Ardos and Eldes are loyal to their father, with Ardos going as far as insisting on addressing him as Grand Master at all times and being straight up fanatical in his belief in Cipher's cause. However, looking at them as trainers, as well as how Greevil appears to judge their abilities, I think it's fairly clear that Eldes is (perceived as) stronger. Therefore he is, according to Greevil's values, the better subordinate and by extension the better son.

Lastly, I find it rather telling that Greevil chooses to listen to Eldes in the end when he's defeated. Yes, this is primarily supposed to be his humanity winning out, with Ardos and Eldes acting as shoulder devil and shoulder angel respectively to create a moral conflict that allows Greevil to choose good and thus go on a path of healing and redemption.

However, there's also the human level. In this scene, Greevil appears distressed and confused and displays a state of mental instability that we can all guess led him to where he is now. He briefly argues against Ardos' suggestion to flee and kill everyone, but folds quickly and easily; his authority and control over his sons is completely shattered. Then Eldes arrives and - finally - speaks up. Again, Greevil puts up little to no resistance and it's Ardos who argues with Eldes.

Greevil ultimately listens to Eldes. Being addressed as father by him gets through to him. When Greevil looks up again, he's looking at Eldes; and it's at this point that Ardos realizes he's lost and leaves without another word. Could a similar emotional appeal from Ardos have worked as well? Maybe, but there is no space for such a thing while arguing in favor of cruelty. I do think that there's an element of Greevil trusting Eldes' judgement that plays into his decision. Would Greevil have chosen the dark path if he favored Ardos over Eldes instead? It's impossible to say for sure, but I would love to hear your thoughts if you have any.

Tldr: I think there's a case to be made that Greevil prefers Eldes over Ardos and that this might have played a role in his decision at the end of XD. It's definitely not explicit and I don't want to state anything as fact, but Greevil's overall values and behavior may hint at such a dynamic; it would also explain some of Ardos' behavior.
