Another reason to love ‘Wynonna Earp’
Pop culture references.
Especially that of queer media and art/entertainment. This is just one episode and we’ve had Buffy, Legends Of Tomorrow, Orphan Black and Xena references in it. In fact there was a Xena reference in the last episode too when Nedley called Wynonna ‘Warrior Princess’.
It appears there are more Xena references in this show than any other kind of references. Andras is a big fan.
It’s no wonder Xenites feel most at home here.
Same kind of quirky campy tone.
Badass female protagonists.
Excellent balance of drama and comedy.
A main WLW epic romance/love story.
(If interpreted that way)
And crazy chaotic fantasy shenanigans where the cast don’t take themselves too seriously and just have fun coming up with wacky, over-the-top improvisations.
Xena is THAT show. And so is ‘Wynonna Earp’.
The influence is very strong and very prominent.

Additional Wynonna Earp Vengeance thoughts
This is going to be all the spoilers. You have been warned.
First of all, things that brought me a lot of joy:
The first scene up until things went bad. Nedley. Mercedes. Being buddies. Everything Mercedes was wearing including her monogrammed fanny pack of fishing lures.
Mercedes being like “the face. Kill me if you must but do not harm the face.” And hey, props to Mina for listening?
Bunny Loblaw cameo. The woman just gets better every time.
Any and all Wayhaught physical activity.
The entire Wynonna and Doc intro in Tombstone. That was just pure 100% Wynonna perfection.
“No we will NOT be redoing those stairs. They are very important to me for reasons.” - Nicole Haught
Every comment from Wynonna about how drunken brawling is actually precisely what Mercedes would have wanted at her wake (although I think Mercedes would have wanted more male strippers tbh).
I am typing this as I walk my dogs and we just passed a gold penis-shaped piece of confetti on the sidewalk outside a bar. Mercedes Gardner: never truly gone.
There was some quality Earp sister time that I did enjoy although it was slightly off (see Waverly discussion).
I am very much not up on current music so I didn’t get 100% of the references but Doc talking to Waverly about Megan Thee Stallion is what I came for.
Wistful comment about friend from Arizona. Thank you, Doc. Sorry your new bf was a tool.
The conversation between Wynonna and Nedley at the cemetery was perfect and should have happened years ago.
The fact that no one for a moment doubted that the three people Wynonna loves most are Waverly, Alice… and Nicole. I will be a Wynnaught shipper till the day I die.
Wynonna going to hell was pretty badass.
Nedley hitting hellhounds with his truck.
No pyramid schemes!
Now for the complaints.
At no point did they convince me that Mina was actually worse than all the demons they’ve faced before. Really? Sure, she doesn’t follow Revenant rules, but they’ve dealt with Bulshar. She does not remotely compare.
I also didn’t really buy the backstory stuff: Wynonna trying to impress a bunch of mean girls by summoning a demon for them? Taking them to the homestead at all? None of that felt true to her. I also don’t know why the group home girls were just suddenly back in Purgatory. (Also Dawson’s Freaks is the STUPIDEST.)
I think maybe Mina would have worked with a full season of build-up, but this was just not enough time.
I’m really pissed off about Mercedes surviving everything just to be murdered as a plot device. I love her, ok? She deserves better.
I am less pissed about Doc because I think they handled it decently - one last epic shootout, burying him in the spot where he wanted to raise Alice, the symmetry with burying Dolls (on the same hill, I think?), letting him come to terms with aging and dying. But it was so unnecessary. And so rushed: we never got to see anyone’s reaction but Wynonna’s (and Jeremy’s wildly out of character non-reaction). He was such an important character and we never got to say goodbye properly.
Not enough Jeremy.
Nicole’s attitude towards Wynonna up until that big don’t tell Waverly moment just made me so sad. I love their dynamic. I don’t know what happened.
In general, it felt like Nicole majorly backslid.
Biggest problem, though: Waverly. And I’m going to be upfront here and say that I was never as enamored with Waverly as a lot of people are. But I did like her and this didn’t feel like Waverly.
I think it’s fantastic that Dom has come out and become more comfortable in their skin and that they didn’t force them back in the girly Waverly box for this.
But I think they changed too much. Physically, the hair, the nose ring, the tattoos, the wardrobe choices (the wifebeater? The bolo tie?). But there was also her behavior. Jumping into a bar fight aggressively after relatively minor provocation was a lot. There was nothing of the light, bubbly Waverly left aside from a craft room. It just felt like part of her died. Like something happened over those 5 years that traumatized her worse than the stuff we actually witnessed. And Nicole being so unconcerned about it.
Anyway, that’s most of it?

A Hodepodge of Older Shows to Watch During the Strike
We support the writer’s strike here, and in a Culture of New, TV execs are going to use the “impact” to currently running shows in order to try to shift your support to them. But here in Tumblr we have revived century-old novels and put them firmly in the mainstream by having a Tumblr-wide bookclub, so I think we can do the same to older shows--not only to keep ourselves entertained, but to remind us all why writers are so important to begin with. Now that AI is coming dangerously close to replacing writers’ work (and is indeed one of the issues the writers are striking over), I think it’s important to remember that our favorite lines (one of mine is “Everything is confetti” from Haunting of Hill House) couldn’t have happened without a writer creating and then fighting for it. Writers deserve healthy workplaces, fair compensation, and recognition for their talent.
Disclaimers: 1. As with all shows, but especially older ones, there will be problematic content. 2. I will try to avoid obvious recs that still have an active fanbase like Star Trek or Buffy, but I don’t have my finger on the pulse of pop culture so maybe I rec something that’s still pretty popular and I don’t realize it. I’m also not necessarily going for “obscure” or “you’ve never heard of this,” but just shows people might have overlooked. Yes, I’m from the US (sorry!) and yes, I would love to hear from non-US people about the best shows from your country that I’m missing out on! Please feel free to reblog and add your favorites to this! 3. Maybe my taste doesn’t align with yours and you disagree. Maybe I missed something because I didn’t want this to be 500 pages long. That’s fine! Again, reblog with your own recs. The more, the better! 4. Genres are weird. I tried. 5. I chose not to add where you could find these series because it can vary country to country, but if all else fails, check your local library’s media collection! (And if that fails, you might sail the seas...) 6. Please be cool... please.
Comedies
Better Off Ted (2009, 2 seasons) A workplace comedy in an evil corporation. Perfect for fans of The Office or Arrested Development. Happy Endings (2011, 3 seasons) It’s like if Friends was just every so slightly more diverse. Takes place in Chicago, which is cool.
M*A*S*H (1972, 11 seasons) You’ve probably heard of this comedy/drama that stars cultural icon Alan Alda as a cynical army medic just trying to survive the Korean War, but have you watched it yet? You should.
NewsRadio (1995, 5 seasons) A workplace comedy in a news radio station starring Phil Hartman. A less cringy Office and a less sophisticated Frasier. Vicar of Dibley (1994, 3 series + specials) Dawn French plays the first-ever female vicar in a small English village. Watch out for an utterly amazing Spice Girls reference and Richard Armitage. Keeping Up Appearances (1990, 5 series) A British woman from a lower class family attempts to social climb to predictably hilarious results. Was apparently one of the Queen Mother’s favorite shows though I can’t for the life of me figure out what she got from it.
You’re the Worst (2014, 5 seasons) Just two really toxic people in a relationship trying to make it work. Definitely has dramatic undertones in addition to being pretty funny.
Side note: If you like comedy, get a subscription to Dropout TV. I’m not a shill. Nobody’s paying me to say this. I just really love it and they’re a great company to support. Science Fiction/Supernatural
Babylon 5 (1994, 5 seasons) Was Deep Space Nine your favorite Star Trek series? Watch this. (Watch it even if it wasn’t.)
Sliders (1995, 5 seasons) An updated Quantum Leap. Jerry O’Connell and John Rhys-Davies star. A couple of scientists and their unfortunate friends are stuck sliding between alternate universes trying to find their way home.
Wynonna Earp (2016, 4 seasons) The great-great granddaughter of Wyatt Earp is tasked with sending reincarnated outlaws back to Hell. Often called the spiritual successor to Buffy, this is a real campy adventure in the Wild West and everything Supernatural wished it could be.
Lost Girl (2010, 5 seasons) This show is about a bisexual succubus named Bo. I don’t know what else you need to watch this.
Drama
The Darling Buds of May (1991, 3 series) The British Little House on the Prairie if Pa were a con man you like to root for. An early Catherine Zeta-Jones stars as the oldest daughter who kidnaps and marries a tax inspector in order to avoid paying taxes. Incredible. Icon.
Midsomer Murders (1997, 24+ series) Technically, this one is still going (and I’m sure everyone’s heard of it), but there’s so many back episodes to get through, I still feel okay recommending it because it’s great for binge-watching when you’re sick. You’ll never run out of episodes. Cozy murder mysteries that take place in England’s most deadly village. Joyce deserves better.
In the Heat of the Night (1988, 7 seasons + films) A crime procedural in the Deep South in the US, a big city Black detective is hired as the head detective in a small town in rural Mississippi. Progressive (for its time), this show dealt with racial issues, police corruption, poverty, and more.
Six Feet Under (2001, 5 seasons) Two brothers work together to run the family business, a funeral home, in the wake of their father’s death. The show’s finale is considered one of the greatest of all time, so you can go in having confidence in a satisfying conclusion.
Historical Fiction/Fantasy
Rome (2005, 2 seasons) A collaboration between HBO and BBC, one of the most expensive series of its time. Has so many incredible character actors. You will constantly be on your phone asking where you recognize That Guy from. Polly Walker was instrumental in my discovering my sexuality.
Xena: Warrior Princess (1995, 6 seasons) Okay, I know this is another popular one, but it also feels like a show people have heard of and never watched, so this is your reminder to do so. Brideshead Revisited (1981, 1 series) British schoolboys doing what schoolboys do best (falling in love with each other). Adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s novel by the same name. Galavant (2015, 2 seasons) Hilarious musical comedy about a downtrodden knight trying to rescue his girlfriend from King Richard, even though she is actually pretty happy being Queen. Catchiest theme ever. SUPPORT WRITERS.

It's been a while since I've watched Wynonna Earp but I just remembered some details and it got me thinkin about the au:
Are we keepin with the show's canon and going with a "Tara's not even a Carpenter (or I guess Loomis in this au)/fully human" twist? If so, how would that go?
(Also do you got any thoughts about who the other characters would be? Like who would be the stand-in for Doc/Nicole/Xavier/etc. Omg wait you could combine this au with the other half-sister au and have a Willa stand-in as well)
SWAGGER. (that's just how i refer to you in my head. i know you have a name. sorry.) THANK YOU FOR ASKING.
So I have virtually no story actually planned out, but like everything else, it will lightly follow the plot and I'll pick and choose what is most fun. I have most of the character's roles planned out.
Tara not being a Loomis is 100% happening. She got that ~ angel ~ blood in her.
(I made Christina's maiden name Carpenter in this, along with several other AUs for simplicity. And like, technically we have nothing in canon that disapproves the idea that it is her surname and her husband took her name. Obviously, that isn't true, but it exists in the area of small things that are never mentioned because why would they.)
SO. Tara was always called Carpenter. Billy never let her take her name, he knew she wasn't his all along. Christina tells Sam it's just because Sam is the heir, not Tara, so only Sam can take the Loomis name. Sam changes her name to Carpenter too after her grandmother Nancy loses it shortly after Billy's death. She wants to distance them from all that.
I really thought hard about whether I wanted a Willa in this AU, and ultimately decided not to. I think Sam has oldest-sibling vibes and fits growing up under the weight of a legacy, and Tara is only going to have Sam on her side vs Waverly who was loved by her mother and Wynonna.
ANYWAY. Some other characters!
Kirby Reed (27), Deputy Marshal of the Black Badge Division, and her lab technician Mindy Meeks-Martin (21). They show up after Sam gets back into town and some bodies start happening. (The Dolls and Jeremy characters, except Mindy is there from day 1.)
Chad (21) is a Mercedes-type character. Just around to serve looks, be catty, and run the family property business after his sister decided to abscond to some secret government lab job.
Stu 'Doc' Macher. Sidekick to the Ghost of the West, and recently, Billy. Billy finds him in the well shortly after Sam is born, and keeps him around to help take down the revenants. Billy throws him back down the well shortly after his wife leaves, blaming him. He'd caught them speaking together in hushed tones shortly before, and acting suspiciously. He even accuses him of being Tara's father. He acted as a bit of an absent uncle to the girls.
There's not really a Nicole figure. What there is is Judy Hicks, fresh into town because Sheriff Dewey Riley needs a deputy. She brings with her her son, Wes (19). Wes works at the station doing grunt work, and when he's not working, he's being sweet on Tara. Judy is ignorant of the supernatural, and even after things start to happen, she remains in denial.

@beyondthescully: ❛ just once i want you to say it. that you care about me. ❜ — WYNONNA EARP STARTERS
' i care! '
it snaps out like an insult, but he's staring at her with utter confusion, brow furrowed like the answer should be obvious. it's easy to say. it's simple. ( it's bare fucking minimum. )
he gets why she's doing this, a little: pulling bricks out of the walls they've built around themselves, shaking the foundations. like pressing on a bruise to be sure it's real, not a smudge of something but a genuine ache. it's been a bad bloody day. they'd been snapping at each other since before their coffees went cold, wrangling a failure that led to a loss that isn't theirs, but that looks just like it, is shaped like it, hurts like it.
so maybe she needs something to hurt differently. or maybe she's looking to hurt him, reeling him in just to cut the line. because they don't do this, this open feelings shite: they buy each other coffee, and she references shakespeare to cheer him up, and he gives her his coat when it's freezing in the basement office, and they hold hands, sometimes. rarely. less rarely, lately.
so there has to be a reason. a single, sensible reason. why now?
' 'course i care. ' his voice lowers to something a lot more reasonable, but the side effect of reasonable is uncertain, veering towards jittery. his hands are stiff and still at his sides, perfectly flat and open, prevented from reaching out. always, always holding back. ' look, you are . . . important, to me, alright? just 'cos we don't know what we're doing doesn't mean — i wouldn't lie about that. i'm not lying about that. '
#beyondthescully#( V. ) THE RISING DARKNESS. ( ii. )#constantine: habitually snappy. wearing six different faces at all times. pretends to be aloof so people run away to a safe distance quicke#constantine being asked to prove he cares: wh. what do you mean?? i've been caring this whole time???? how did you not know that??????#yeah he's soooo good at this he's SO good at this#( answered. ) THIS IS JOHN CONSTANTINE. I’m really confused about Waverly’s canon sexuality in ‘Wynonna Earp’. She identifies herself as bisexual, but other characters, including Wynonna, refer to her as lesbian or gay. Normally, I go with what the character themselves declare themselves to be but the amount of times other characters have called her a lesbian or gay and she didn’t correct them or even make a comment at all makes me think that they originally had wanted to her to be a lesbian or gay but then switched to bisexual in the last season which is the only season where Waverly declares herself bisexual. I mean if there was no self declaration, I would assume that she is bisexual because of her relationship with Champ and all the ‘roster of boyfriends’ she dated in high school that Robin tells us about in Season 3. But of course that’s not always the case because you can believe that you are straight but you turn out to be not straight even if you’ve dated the opposite sex before and that could mean a full switch over once you’ve had romantic/sexual experience with the same-sex.
So yeah, I think that might be what’s happened here.
They thought that that meant Waverly identified as a lesbian but then changed that to bisexual in Season 4.
Does anyone actually know for sure what the story is?
#wynonna earp#waverly earp#dom pc#waverly’s sexuality#she’s sometimes referred to as a lesbian#she’s sometimes referred to as bisexual#she declares herself as bisexual in the last season#last episode#is it dom’s preference?#did dom request to change this?

Vivian + clothing choices
It's my hc that SHIELD agents aren't supposed to let people know they work for SHIELD (Vivian's cover story is a separate hc). But at the same time, as Clint said in Avengers, "SHIELD has many enemies" and at least some of those enemies have the ability to know who SHIELD's agents are. Therefore, it’s reasonable for SHIELD agents to be cautious.
As a result of this, Vivian won't set foot outside her apartment unless she's able to handle herself in a fight. Just in case.
A large part of Vivian's fashion style is dependent on "can I fight in this?" So skirts have to give her freedom of movement. Tops can't restrict arm movement. She'll wear stiletto or platform high heels at home or in a club, but she won't wear anything out on the street that she can't run in or balance on one foot in. She avoids earrings and good necklaces, only wearing necklaces that will break easily so it can't be used to hurt her. Vivian prefers cuff bracelets and therefore avoids wearing bracelets at all. Modesty is not a concern; she really doesn’t care who gets a glimpse of tit or ass so long as she’s capable of punching them in the face.
Her hair is almost always tied up because she hates it in her face, but outside of her apartment it's usually french braided so that if someone grabs a hold of the pressure will be spread out across her scalp (I totally stole that from Tamora Pierce and Vivian absolutely got the idea from reading the Beka Cooper books). Often she goes a step further and pins up the braid so there’s less to grab (I will find a picture of Nicole Haught from Wynonna Earp for a perfect reference).

The quickest of verse references -
default verse - fucked off - verse tag tbd. a few thousand years ago, one of the first demons took a page out of Lucifer's book and started making deals. she established the system of crossroads demons and sat at the top of that hierarchy for quite some time...until she decided she was Over It™ and fucked off to do her own thing. She still makes the occasional deal, but answers to no one.
Secondary verse - boss bitch - verse tag tbd. someve a verse for anything that takes place in an era where she's still in charge of the crossroads demons of hell, and oversees incoming souls and contracts.
au verse - fallen angel - verse tag tbd. rather than Lucifer's pet project, she's an angel that joined him in his rebellion, and as such was cast out of the heavenly host.
Wynonna Earp verse - Revenant - verse tag ᴍᴀᴋᴇ ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴘᴇᴀᴄᴇ . Exactly what it says on the tin -- one of the 77 Revenants tied to the Earp curse and Bound to the Ghost River Triangle.
unspecified/misc - catchall verse/tag - ᴅᴇᴠɪʟ ᴏɴ ʏᴏᴜʀ sʜᴏᴜʟᴅᴇʀ - anything taking place outside of her main verses/aus, or things without a specified verse. she may or may not have her memories here -- it's a category for "idk where to put this."
A note: in any verse where she's a crossroads demon, unless otherwise plotted she does not work for or report to anyone. she uses a fragment of the power of the soul itself to fuel the magic behind her deals. the souls she buys end up in Hell, but she reserves the right to personally claim them once they're there. think of her as an independent contractor to hell, rather than a direct employee.
#( lore drop! )#( verses. )#// I'll go into more detail in the future on various things#// but here are her bare bones basics for now#( тнє ∂ιѕσвє∂ιєη¢є тнαт нσℓ∂ѕ υѕ тσgєтнєя || lore )

Emotional intimacy and chemistry and connection.
It really does trump the physical every damn time.
I should probably check out this show at some point. Just a bit wary because I’m really not a DC fan. If anything I’m more of a Marvel fan but still not huge on the whole comics adaptation to the screen thing.
Saying that… ‘Wynonna Earp’ was originally a comic and I really enjoyed watching that show and there was a Sara Lance reference. I’ll give it go. See what’s what.
Hopefully I can find it somewhere without streaming it on the major network streaming services. I want to avoid doing that as much as possible. But I also want to avoid illegal/pirating ways of watching it as well.
I do make things much harder for myself, don’t I? 🤣
But I’ve talked myself into it now so I’m doing it. 👍
They certainly look like a significant WLW ship if there’s a lot of emotional intimacy between them and since I’m doing a meta series about physical and emotional intimacy and how real chemistry is required to be able to make it look as convincing as possible…
Yeah, this looks like a venture to go down for study.
random avalance gifs [17|∞]
You know, I-I never saw my parents kiss or laugh or, you know, fight even. I never had a mom to like hug me after a heartbreak or just a dad to tell me that he was proud of me, and I just never had a family… to love me. And I really don't know that I'm gonna know how to love ours. That's all.
